40:1

Occupatio magna creata est omnibus hominibus, et jugum grave super filios Adam, a die exitus de ventre matris eorum usque in diem sepulturæ in matrem omnium.

沉重的勞苦是為每個人而設的，重軛壓在亞當的子孫身上，從他們出母腹的那日起，直到歸入萬物之母的那日。

Great travail is created for every man, And a heavy yoke is upon the sons of Adam, From the day of their coming forth from their mother’s womb, Until the day for their burial in the mother of all things.

40:2

Cogitationes eorum, et timores cordis, adinventio exspectationis, et dies finitionis,

他們的思慮、心中的懼怕、對未來的揣想、死亡的日子，

The expectation of things to come, and the day of death, Trouble their thoughts, and cause fear of heart;

40:3

a residente super sedem gloriosam, usque ad humiliatum in terra et cinere :

從坐在榮耀寶座上的，直到塵土爐灰中卑微的人，

From him that sits on a throne of glory, Even to him that is humbled in earth and ashes;

40:4

ab eo qui utitur hyacintho et portat coronam, usque ad eum qui operitur lino crudo : furor, zelus, tumultus, fluctuatio, et timor mortis, iracundia perseverans, et contentio :

從穿紫袍戴冠冕的，直到披著粗麻布的，這一切都使他們不得安寧。

From him that wears purple and a crown, Even to him that is clothed with a hempen frock.

40:5

et in tempore refectionis in cubili, somnus noctis immutat scientiam ejus.

忿怒、嫉妒、煩亂、不安和死亡的懼怕、惱恨與爭競，都臨到他們；就是在牀上安歇的時候，夜間的睡眠也攪亂他的心思。

There is wrath, and jealousy, and trouble, and disquiet, And fear of death, and anger, and strife; And in the time of rest upon his bed His night sleep does change his knowledge.

40:6

Modicum tamquam nihil in requie, et ab eo in somnis, quasi in die respectus.

他得安息片刻，幾乎等於無有；隨後在睡夢中，如同在守望之日，他心中的異象使他驚惶，像是從戰陣前逃脫出來的人；

A little or nothing is his resting, And afterward in his sleep, as in a day of keeping watch, He is troubled in the vision of his heart, As one that has escaped from the front of battle.

40:7

Conturbatus est in visu cordis sui, tamquam qui evaserit in die belli : in tempore salutis suæ exsurrexit, et admirans ad nullum timorem :

正當他得脫險境之時驚醒過來，詫異所懼怕的原來不算甚麼。

In the very time of his deliverance he awakens, And marvels that the fear is nothing.

40:8

cum omni carne, ab homine usque ad pecus, et super peccatores septuplum.

凡有血氣的，從人到牲畜，都是如此；至於罪人，所受的更要加增七倍。

It is thus with all flesh, from man to beast, And upon sinners sevenfold more.

40:9

Ad hæc mors, sanguis, contentio, et rhomphæa, oppressiones, fames, et contritio, et flagella :

死亡、流血、爭鬥、刀劍、災禍、饑荒、毀滅與鞭打，

Death, and bloodshed, and strife, and sword, Calamities, famine, tribulation, and the scourge;
