31:1
Vigilia honestatis tabefaciet carnes, et cogitatus illius auferet somnum.
因財富而失眠使肉體消瘦,對它的憂慮使人睡意全消。
Wakefulness that comes of riches consumes the flesh, And the anxiety thereof puts away sleep.
31:2
Cogitatus præscientiæ avertit sensum, et infirmitas gravis sobriam facit animam.
焦慮的失眠攆走睡意,沉重的疾病使人睡不安穩。
Wakeful anxiety will crave slumber; And in a sore disease sleep will be broken.
31:3
Laboravit dives in congregatione substantiæ, et in requie sua replebitur bonis suis.
富人勞苦聚斂錢財,及至安歇便飽享自己的美物。
A rich man toileth in gathering money together; And when he rests, he is filled with his good things.
31:4
Laboravit pauper in diminutione victus, et in fine inops fit.
窮人勞苦於缺乏生計,及至安歇仍是窮乏。
A poor man toileth in lack of substance; And when he rests, he becomes needy.
31:5
Qui aurum diligit non justificabitur, et qui insequitur consumptionem replebitur ex ea.
愛金子的人必不得稱義,追逐財利的人必因此迷失。
He that loves gold shall not be justified; And he that follows destruction shall himself have his fill of it.
31:6
Multi dati sunt in auri casus, et facta est in specie ipsius perditio illorum.
許多人因金子的緣故陷於敗亡,他們的滅亡正當面臨到。
Many have been given over to ruin for the sake of gold; And their perdition meets them face to face.
31:7
Lignum offensionis est aurum sacrificantium : væ illis qui sectantur illud ! et omnis imprudens deperiet in illo.
金子對崇拜它的人是絆腳石,每個愚人都要被它纏住。
It is a stumbling block to those who sacrifice to it; And every fool shall be taken therewith.
31:8
Beatus dives qui inventus est sine macula, et qui post aurum non abiit, nec speravit in pecunia et thesauris.
富足而被尋見無瑕、又不追逐金子的人,是有福的。
Blessed is the rich that is found without blemish, And that goes not after gold.
31:9
Quis est hic ? et laudabimus eum : fecit enim mirabilia in vita sua.
這人是誰呢?我們要稱他為有福的;因為他在百姓中行了奇妙的事。
Who is he? and we will call him blessed: For wonderful things has he done among his people.
31:10
Qui probatus est in illo, et perfectus est, erit illi gloria æterna : qui potuit transgredi, et non est transgressus ; facere mala, et non fecit.
誰受此試驗而被尋為完全?這就成為他的誇耀。誰有能力越軌卻不越軌?有機會行惡卻不行惡?
Who has been tried thereby, and found perfect? Then let him glory. Who has had the power to transgress, and has not transgressed? And to do evil, and has not done it?
31:11
Ideo stabilita sunt bona illius in Domino, et eleemosynas illius enarrabit omnis ecclesia sanctorum.
他的家業必得堅立,會眾必傳述他的施捨。
His goods shall be made sure, And the congregation shall declare his alms.
31:12
Supra mensam magnam sedisti ? non aperias super illam faucem tuam prior.
你若坐在盛大的筵席前,不要在席上張口貪食,也不要說:『席上的東西真多啊。』
Sittest you at a great table? be not greedy upon it, And say not, Many are the things upon it.
31:13
Non dicas sic : Multa sunt, quæ super illam sunt.
要記得貪婪的惡眼是邪惡的,還有什麼比眼睛所造的更惡呢?因此它必為各樣事流淚。
Remember that an evil eye is a wicked thing: What has been created more evil than an eye? Therefore it sheds tears from every face.
31:14
Memento quoniam malus est oculus nequam.
它所注視之處,不要伸手去取,也不要與人爭著伸進同一盤中。
Stretch not your hand wherever it looks, And thrust not yourself with it into the dish.
31:15
Nequius oculo quid creatum est ? ideo ab omni facie sua lacrimabitur, cum viderit.
要以己心推度鄰舍的心,凡事都要思量。
Consider your neighbor’s liking by your own; And be discreet in every point.
31:16
Ne extendas manum tuam prior, et invidia contaminatus erubescas.
要像有教養的人一樣,喫擺在你面前的食物,不要狼吞虎嚥,免得被人厭惡。
Eat, as becomes a man, those things which are set before you; And eat not greedily, lest you be hated.
31:17
Ne comprimaris in convivio.
為著禮儀的緣故,你要先停手,不要貪得無厭,免得你冒犯人。
Be first to leave off for manners’ sake; And be not insatiable, lest you offend.
31:18
Intellige quæ sunt proximi tui ex teipso.
你若與眾人同坐,不要比他們先伸手取食。
And if you sit among many, Reach not out your hand before them.
31:19
Utere quasi homo frugi his quæ tibi apponuntur : ne, cum manducas multum, odio habearis.
對有教養的人,少許就足夠了,他躺臥牀上也不致喘息難安。
How sufficient to a well-mannered man is a very little, And he does not breathe hard upon his bed.
31:20
Cessa prior causa disciplinæ : et noli nimius esse, ne forte offendas.
飲食有節必得安眠,清早起來精神爽利;貪食無度的人卻有失眠之苦、腹痛與絞痛。
Healthy sleep comes of moderate eating; He rises early, and his wits are with him: The pain of wakefulness, and colic, And griping, are with an insatiable man.
31:21
Et si in medio multorum sedisti, prior illis ne extendas manum tuam, nec prior poscas bibere.
你若被迫多喫了,就起身去吐出,便可得安舒。
And if you have been forced to eat, Rise up in the midst thereof, and you shall have rest.
31:22
Quam sufficiens est homini erudito vinum exiguum ! et in dormiendo non laborabis ab illo, et non senties dolorem.
孩子啊,要聽我,不要藐視我,到末了你必明白我的話是真的:凡你所做的,都要敏捷俐落,疾病就不會臨到你。
Hear me, my son, and despise me not, And at the last you shall find my words true: In all your works be quick, And no disease shall come to you.
31:23
Vigilia, cholera et tortura viro infrunito,
待人慷慨、樂於分享食物的人,眾人必稱讚他;他美好的見證,人都信實接受。
Him that is liberal of his meat the lips shall bless; And the testimony of his excellence shall be believed.
31:24
somnus sanitatis in homine parco : dormiet usque mane, et anima illius cum ipso delectabitur.
對食物吝嗇的人,全城必發怨言議論他;他吝嗇的見證,確鑿無疑。
Him that is a niggard of his meat the city shall murmur at; And the testimony of his niggardness shall be sure.
31:25
Et si coactus fueris in edendo multum, surge e medio, evome, et refrigerabit te, et non adduces corpori tuo infirmitatem.
不要在酒上逞強好勝,因為酒已使許多人滅亡。
Show not yourself valiant in wine; For wine has destroyed many.
31:26
Audi me, fili, et ne spernas me, et in novissimo invenies verba mea.
熔爐藉淬煉試驗鋼的韌性;照樣,酒在驕傲人的爭吵中試驗人心。
The furnace proves the temper of steel by dipping; So does wine prove hearts in the quarreling of the proud.
31:27
In omnibus operibus tuis esto velox, et omnis infirmitas non occurret tibi.
對人而言,酒若按量飲用,便如生命一般美好。缺了酒的人生算甚麼?酒原是為使人歡樂而造的。
Wine is as good as life to men, If you drink it in its measure: What life is there to a man that is without wine? And it has been created to make men glad.
31:28
Splendidum in panibus benedicent labia multorum, et testimonium veritatis illius fidele.
在適當的時候、適量地飲酒,乃是心中的喜樂、靈魂的歡暢。
Wine drunk in season and to satisfy Is joy of heart, and gladness of soul:
31:29
Nequissimo in pane murmurabit civitas, et testimonium nequitiæ illius verum est.
飲酒過量,卻成了靈魂的苦楚,帶來爭執與衝突。
Wine drunk largely is bitterness of soul, With provocation and conflict.
31:30
Diligentes in vino noli provocare : multos enim exterminavit vinum.
醉酒使愚昧人怒氣高漲,自取其害;它削弱力氣,又添加傷痕。
Drunkenness increases the rage of a fool to his hurt; It diminishes strength, and adds wounds.
31:31
Ignis probat ferrum durum : sic vinum corda superborum arguet in ebrietate potatum.
在酒宴中不要責備鄰舍,也不要在他歡樂時藐視他;不要對他說羞辱的話,也不要藉討債逼迫他。
Rebuke not your neighbor at a banquet of wine, Neither set him at nothing in his mirth: Speak not to him a word of reproach, And press not upon him by asking back a debt.
