神既在古時藉著眾先知,多次多方地曉諭列祖,就在這末後的日子,藉著他的兒子曉諭我們;
God, having spoken of old in many portions and in many ways to the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by a Son;
1:2
whom he appointed heir of all things, through whom also he made the ages.
1:3
Truly, where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.
1:4
所以蒙福的保羅在寫信給希伯來人時,也在這開篇之處暗示了這一點;
This, then, the blessed Paul here also intimates in the preamble, when he writes unto the Hebrews;
1:5
for as for them — worn out and wasted by their evils, and judging their affairs by these, and so reckoning themselves less than all others — he shows that by this very fact they had rather enjoyed a greater and far surpassing grace, rousing the hearer from the very onset of his discourse.
1:6
'God, having spoken of old in many portions and in many ways to the fathers by the prophets, hath in these last days spoken unto us by a Son.'
1:7
Why did he not set himself over against the prophets? And yet he was far greater than they, inasmuch as he had been entrusted with greater things.
1:8
But he does not do this. Wherefore, then?
1:9
其一,是因他不肯誇說關乎自己的大事;
First, because he declined to speak great things concerning himself;
1:10
其二,是因那些聽者尚未成熟完全;
secondly, because the hearers were not yet perfect;
1:11
and thirdly, because he wished rather to exalt them, and to show how great was the superiority.
1:12
What great thing is it that he sent prophets unto our fathers? For unto us he sent his very Son, the only-begotten.
1:13
And well did he begin, thus saying:
1:14
'In many portions and in many ways;'
1:15
因為他藉此指明,連眾先知自己也未曾見過神;
for he shows that not even the prophets themselves saw God;
1:16
for the phrase 'in many portions and in many ways' means: in diverse manners.
1:17
'For I,' he saith, 'multiplied visions, and by the hands of the prophets was I made like unto men.'
1:18
So that the superiority lies not in this alone, that to them prophets were sent, but to us the Son, but also in this, that none of them saw God, whereas the only-begotten Son saw him.
1:19
And he does not lay this down at once, but establishes it by what follows, when he speaks concerning the manhood, saying:
1:20
'For unto which of the angels said he at any time,
1:21
Thou art my Son, and, Sit thou at my right hand'? And mark his great sagacity:
1:22
他先從眾先知顯明這超越;
first, from the prophets he shows the superiority;
1:23
then, having established that as a matter agreed upon, he thereupon declares that to them he spoke through the prophets, but to us through the Only-begotten.
1:24
But if to them he spoke also through angels — for indeed angels too conversed with the Jews —
1:25
But even in this we have the greater portion, and by so much the more, as He is a Master to us, while to them He is Lord over servants.
1:26
For both angels and prophets are our fellow-servants.
1:27
For this too rouses them up, and comforts them when they are already worn out.
1:28
正如他在別處所說:「主已臨近了,你們一無掛慮」;
For just as elsewhere he says, 'The Lord is at hand, be anxious for nothing';
1:29
μεν·
又說:「因為我們得救,現今比初信的時候更近了」;
and again, 'For now is our salvation nearer than when we believed';
1:30
What then is it that he says? That everyone who has been spent in the contest, when he hears that the contest is at its end, breathes a little, knowing that it is the end of his toils and the beginning of his rest.
1:31
In these last days He has spoken to us in a Son.
1:32
Behold again the phrase 'in a Son'—that is, 'through the Son,' he says—directed against those who claim that this applies to the Spirit.
1:33
Do you see that the word 'in' also means 'through'? And the words 'of old' and 'in these last days' again hint at something further.
1:34
What then is this? That when much time had passed in the interval, when we were about to be chastised, when the spiritual gifts had failed, when there was no expectation of salvation, when from every side we expected to be worse off—then it was that we obtained the greater portion.
1:35
And observe how discreetly he has said it.
1:36
因為他並沒有說「基督說了話」,儘管說話的正是祂;
For he did not say, 'Christ spoke,' although it was indeed He who spoke;
1:37
but since their souls were weak, and they were not yet able to hear the things concerning Christ, he says, 'He spoke to us in a Son.'
1:38
What are you saying? God spoke through the Son? Yes.
1:39
Where then is the superiority? For here you have shown that both the New and the Old belong to one and the same God, but this is no great superiority.
1:40
For this reason, then, he proceeds further with this argument, saying:
1:41
See how Paul makes it common, and puts himself on an equal footing with the disciples, saying:
1:42
And yet He did not speak to him, but to the apostles, and through them to the many.
1:43
But he exalts them, and shows that He spoke to them also, while at the same time he in a manner rebukes the Jews.
1:44
For nearly all those to whom the prophets spoke were wicked and defiled men.
1:45
And he does not yet make his discourse concerning these things, but for the present concerning the gifts bestowed by God.
1:46
'Whom He appointed heir of all things.'
1:47
As David also says in the second Psalm:
1:48
'The nations for thine inheritance.'
1:49
For no longer is Jacob the Lord's portion, nor Israel His lot, but all men.
1:50
What is the meaning of 'Whom He appointed heir'? That is: He made Him Lord of all.
1:51
Which Peter also said in the Acts:
1:52
'God has made Him both Lord and Christ.'
1:53
And he uses the name of 'heir,' indicating two things: both the genuineness of the sonship and the inseparability of the lordship.
1:54
That is, of the whole world.
1:55
Then again he brings back his discourse to what preceded:
1:56
'Through whom also He made the ages.'
1:57
Where are those who say, 'There was a time when He was not'? Then, using steps of ascent, he afterward utters something far greater than these, saying:
1:58
'Who being the effulgence of His glory, and the express image of His substance, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself made purification of our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high;
1:59
having become so much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.'
1:60
Oh, the wisdom of the apostle!
1:61
or rather, it is not Paul's wisdom, but the grace of the Spirit that one must admire here.
1:62
因為他說出這些話,並非出於自己的思慮,也非憑己力發現這般智慧;
For he did not utter these things out of his own mind, nor did he discover such wisdom of himself;
1:63
for how could he? From the knife and the hides, or from the workshop? But it was of divine operation to speak thus.
1:64
因為這些思想並非由他的心思所生,那時他的心思是何等卑微鄙陋,並不比市井小民高明;
For his understanding did not give birth to these thoughts, being at that time so lowly and mean as to have nothing more than the common people;
1:65
for how could a mind consumed with contracts and hides do so? But it was the grace of the Spirit, which displays its power through whomever it will.
1:66
正如有人若想把一個幼童帶上某個高處,直達天頂之巔,他必溫和地、一點一點地行,藉著低處的階梯把他領上去;
For just as, if one wished to lead a little child up to some lofty place, reaching to the very summit of heaven, he does it gently and by little, bringing him up by the lower steps;
1:67
然後,當他把孩子立於高處,吩咐他往下看,見他頭暈目眩、驚慌不安、天旋地轉時,便扶住他,再把他帶回較低之處,讓他得以喘息;
then, when he has set him on high, and bidden him look down, and sees him growing dizzy and troubled and giddy, taking hold of him he brings him down again to a lower place, allowing him to breathe;
1:68
然後,當孩子恢復過來,他又把他領上去,又再把他帶下來;
then, when he has recovered him, he leads him up again, and again brings him down;
1:69
even so did the blessed Paul do, both in the case of the Hebrews and everywhere, having learned this from his Teacher.
1:70
For He too did thus, at one time leading His hearers up to a height, at another bringing them down, and not suffering them to linger long at the same point.
1:71
See him therefore even here—through how many steps he leads them up, and having set them at the very summit of piety, before they grow dizzy and are seized with giddiness, see how he brings them down again lower, and giving them room to breathe, he says:
1:72
and again, 'Whom He appointed heir of all things.'
1:73
For the name of 'Son' is for the present a common one.
1:74
因為凡是指真正的兒子而言的地方,祂便高於萬有;
For wherever the genuine Son is understood, He is above all things;
1:75
but for the present, however it may be, he goes on to establish and to show that He is from above.
1:76
And see how he first sets Him on the lower step, saying:
1:77
「祂立祂為承受萬有的」;
'Whom He appointed heir of all things';
1:78
因為「祂立祂為承受者」這語是卑微的;
for the phrase 'He appointed heir' is lowly;
1:79
then to the higher, adding:
1:80
「祂也藉著祂造了諸世界」;
'Through whom also He made the ages';
1:81
then to the highest, and that after which there is no other:
1:82
'Who being the effulgence of His glory, and the express image of His substance.'
1:83
Truly he has led them into unapproachable light, into the very effulgence itself.
1:84
And before they are darkened, see how he again gently brings them down, saying:
1:85
'And upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself made purification of our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty.'
1:86
He sat down—but rather, 'After the purification He sat down.'
1:87
因為祂執取了成肉身之事;
For He took hold of the incarnation;
1:88
and again he utters lowly things.
1:89
Then again, having uttered something lofty—'For at the right hand,' he says, 'of the Majesty on high'—he again utters the lowly through the addition, 'having become so much better than the angels, as He has inherited a more excellent name than they.'
1:90
因為他在此也論及那按著肉身的救贖安排;
For here he is also discoursing concerning the dispensation according to the flesh;
1:91
因為「祂成了更美的」這語,並非指那與父同等的本質而言;
for the phrase 'having become better' is not indicative of the substance which is according to the Father;
1:92
因為那本質並非受造成的,乃是受生的;
for that did not come to be, but was begotten;
1:93
然而他此刻所論的並非關乎祂本質的存有;
but the discourse is not now concerning His essential being;
1:94
'He that comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me'—this is what it means, that He is more honourable and more illustrious.
1:95
So too here Paul, when he had said:
1:96
Having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they — he thereby declared Him to be superior and more highly approved, in proportion as He has inherited a name more distinguished than theirs.
1:97
Do you see that the discourse was concerning Him according to the flesh? For this name — God the Word — He always possessed; He did not inherit it later, nor did He then become better than the angels when He had made purification for our sins; but He was always better, and better beyond all comparison.
1:98
But it is with reference to Him according to the flesh that this was said.
1:99
Indeed it is our custom likewise, when we discourse concerning man, to utter both lofty things and lowly ones.
1:100
因為當我們說「人算不得甚麼,人是塵土,人是灰燼」時,我們是從較卑下的一面來稱呼那整體;
For when we say, 'Man is nothing, man is dust, man is ashes,' we name the whole from the worse part;
1:101
but when we say, 'Man is an immortal living being,' and 'Man is rational,' and that he is akin to the things above, we again name the whole from the better part.
1:102
So too concerning Christ, Paul discourses sometimes from the lesser, sometimes from the greater, both wishing to establish the economy of the Incarnation, and to teach concerning the undefiled nature.
1:103
Since therefore He made purification of our sins, let us remain pure, and let us receive no stain; but let us so strive to preserve undefiled and clean the beauty which He has placed in us, and its comeliness, that we may have no spot or wrinkle or any such thing.
1:104
因為連那些微小的過犯也是斑點與皺紋;
For even the small sins are a spot and a wrinkle;
1:105
我所指的如:辱罵、侮慢、謊言;
such as I mean: reviling, insult, lying;
1:106
or rather, these are not even small, but exceedingly great, and so great that they even deprive one of the kingdom of heaven.
1:107
How, and in what manner? 'Whosoever calls his brother a fool,' He says, 'shall be liable to the gehenna of fire.'
1:108
But if he who calls another a fool — which seems the lightest of all offences, and a matter of children's talk —
1:109
then he who calls another malicious and a scoundrel and envious, and pelts him with countless other reproaches, what penalty of punishment will he not incur? What is more dreadful than this? But bear with the word, I entreat you.
1:110
For if he who does it to one of the least does it to Him, and he who does it not to one of the least does it not to Him,
1:111
那麼在稱讚與責難的事上,豈不也是一樣嗎?因為那侮辱弟兄的,就是侮辱了神;
how is it not the same also in the matter of praise and of accusation? For he who insults his brother has insulted God;
1:112
and he who honours his brother honours God.
1:113
所以我們當操練我們的舌頭,使它滿了嘉美的言語;
Let us therefore train our tongue to be full of good words;
1:114
For 'Keep your tongue from evil,' He says.
1:115
因為神賜下舌頭給我們,並不是為要叫我們彼此控告、彼此侮辱、彼此毀謗;
For God did not give it to us for this purpose, that we should accuse, that we should insult, that we should slander one another;
1:116
but that we should hymn God, that we should speak those things which impart grace to the hearers — the things that make for edification, the things that make for benefit.
1:117
Have you spoken ill of a certain man? What do you gain, when you involve yourself along with him in harm? For you have gotten the reputation of a slanderer.
1:118
因為沒有——實在沒有——任何惡是止於受害者的,乃是連同那作惡者也一並包羅在內;
For there is not—there is not—any evil that stops at the one who suffers it, but it also embraces the one who does it;
1:119
for instance, the envious man seems indeed to plot against another, but he himself first reaps the fruit of the injustice, being wasted and consumed, and hated by all.
1:120
那貪婪的人奪去別人的錢財,卻也奪去自己被人愛的分;
The covetous man robs another of money, but also robs himself of being loved;
1:121
rather, he brings it about that he is spoken ill of by all.
1:122
然而美好的名聲遠勝過錢財;
But a good reputation is far better than riches;
1:123
因為那名聲不容易洗刷,而那錢財卻容易得著;
for the one is not easy to wash away, while the other is easy to acquire;
1:124
更確切地說,那錢財若不在,絲毫無損於那沒有它的人;
or rather, the latter, when not present, in no way harms him who has it not;
1:125
but the former, when not present, makes a man reproached and ridiculous, and hateful and hostile to all.
1:126
The wrathful man again first punishes himself by tearing himself asunder, and then the one against whom he is angry.
1:127
照樣,那毀謗人的先羞辱自己,然後才羞辱那被毀謗的人;
So the slanderer first shames himself, and then the one slandered;
1:128
or perhaps he has not even been able to do this, but has gone off, having himself gotten the reputation of something foul and abominable, while rather causing the other to be more beloved.
1:129
For when a man, being ill spoken of, does not requite him with the same, but praises and admires him,
1:130
he will not be praising that other, but himself.
1:131
因為正如我先前所說,向鄰舍所發的毀謗,首先纏住那些謀作此事的人;
For just as, as I said before, revilings against one's neighbours first fasten upon those who plot them;
1:132
so also the good deeds done to one's neighbours first gladden those who work them.
1:133
而那惡,也是理所當然地,先由他自己嘗到;
And the evil, too, quite reasonably he himself first reaps;
1:134
又如泉水,無論是鹹的還是可飲的,既充滿那來汲取之人的器皿,也不減少那湧出它的泉源;
and just as spring water, whether brackish or sweet to drink, both fills the vessels of those who draw it and does not diminish the fountain that pours it forth;
1:135
so indeed also both vice and virtue, from whatever source they issue, both gladden and destroy that very one.
1:136
But the things yonder—what discourse shall recount them, whether the good things or the evil? There is none.
1:137
因為那美善的事超越一切心思,不僅僅是超越言語;
For the good things surpass every mind, not reason only;
1:138
而那相反的事,雖然是用我們所熟悉的名稱來說的;
while the contrary things are indeed expressed by the names familiar to us;
1:139
因為祂說,那裡有火、有黑暗、有捆鎖,並有不死的蟲;
for there, He says, is fire and darkness and bonds and the worm that never ends;
1:140
yet He sets before us not only these things which have been named, but others still more grievous.
1:141
And that you may learn this, consider straightway first this point.
1:142
For tell me, if it is fire, how is it also darkness? Do you see that that fire is more grievous than this of ours? For it has no light.
1:143
若那是火,怎能永遠焚燒呢?你看見它顯為比我們這火更慘烈麼?因為它不被撲滅;
If it is fire, how does it burn forever? Do you see that it turns out to be more grievous than this of ours? For it is not quenched;
1:144
for on this account it is called unquenchable.
1:145
Let us consider, then, how great an evil it is to be burning continually, and to be in darkness, and to utter countless wailings, and to gnash the teeth, and yet not even to be heard.
1:146
因為若有一個生長高貴的人在今世被下在監裡,單是那惡臭、那躺臥在黑暗中、那與兇手一同被囚,他就說這比任何死亡都更為難受;
For if one who has been cast into prison here—one of those nobly reared—says that the mere stench, and the lying in darkness, and being bound together with murderers, is more grievous than any death;
1:147
consider what it is when we are burned together with the murderers of the whole world, neither seeing nor being seen, but amid so great a multitude thinking ourselves to be alone.
1:148
因為那黑暗與無光,甚至不容我們辨認那些靠近我們的人;
For the darkness and the lack of light do not permit us to distinguish even those near us;
1:149
but each will be so disposed as though he alone suffered this.
1:150
但若黑暗本身尚且壓迫、擾亂我們的魂;
But if darkness in itself oppresses and troubles our souls;
1:151
what then will it be, when together with the darkness there are also so many pains and burnings? Wherefore I entreat you continually to revolve these things within yourselves, and to endure the grief that comes from the words, that we may not undergo the punishment that comes through the deeds.
1:152
For assuredly all these things shall be, and no one shall deliver from the punishments yonder those who have done things worthy of them—not father, not mother, not brother—even though he have much boldness, even though he be very powerful with God.
1:153
因為經上說:「弟兄斷不能贖回」;
'For a brother does not redeem,' it says;
1:154
'shall a man redeem?' For He Himself it is who renders to each according to his works, and from these it is possible both to be saved and to be punished.
1:155
'Make to yourselves friends out of the mammon of unrighteousness.'
1:156
所以我們當聽從,因為這是主人的命令,讓我們將財富中多餘的分散給那些窮乏的人;
Let us therefore hearken, for it is the Master's commandment, and let us scatter the superfluities of our wealth among the needy;
1:157
趁我們還作它主人的時候,讓我們施行賙濟;
let us work almsgiving, while we are still lords of it;
1:158
因為這正是「藉著錢財結交朋友」的意思;
for this is what it means, to make friends out of the mammon;
1:159
let us empty out our riches among the poor, that we may empty out that fire, that we may quench it, that we may have boldness there.
1:160
For yonder it is not these who receive us, but our own work.
1:161
For that it is not simply the being friends with these that has power to save us, it is possible to learn from the addition.
1:162
For why did He not say, 'Make to yourselves friends, that they may receive you into their eternal tabernacles,' but added also the manner? For having said, 'Out of the mammon of unrighteousness,' He showed that it is from our possessions that we ought to make these our friends, making clear that friendship will not simply stand up for us, unless we have good works, unless we justly empty out the wealth unjustly gathered.
1:163
然而我們這論到賙濟的話,不僅適合富人,也適合窮人;
But this discourse of ours concerning almsgiving will suit not the rich only, but also the poor;
1:164
縱然有人是靠乞討度日的,這話也是向他說的;
even if a man be one who is fed by begging, this discourse is directed to him also;
1:165
For there is not, indeed there is not, anyone so poor, even if he be exceedingly poor, as to lack the means of giving two mites.
1:166
It is possible, therefore, even for one who gives little out of little, to surpass those who possess much and give more.
1:167
For the greatness of an act of mercy is judged not by the measure of what is given, but by the ability and the disposition of those who give.
1:168
So that everywhere we have need of a right disposition, everywhere of love toward God.
1:169
If we do all things with this, then even if, having little, we give little, God will not turn away His face, but will receive it as something great and marvelous.
1:170
For He gives heed to the disposition, not to the things given.
1:171
祂若見那心志是偉大的,就照著它投下祂的票數與裁決,並使這樣的人得以有分於那永遠的美善;
And if He sees that disposition to be great, upon it He casts His votes and judgments, and makes such persons partakers of the eternal good things;
1:172
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind.
