For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God the Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth of everything—first being interpreted as king of righteousness, and then also king of Salem (which is king of peace), without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, remains a priest perpetually.
12:2
Paul, wishing to show the difference between the New and the Old, scatters this point in many places, and skirmishes, and rings it in the ears of his hearers, and exercises them beforehand.
12:3
因為他一開頭,甚至從序言起,就立下這意思,說神從前藉著眾先知向那些人說話,如今卻藉著兒子向我們說話;
For at once, even from the very preface, he laid down this point, saying that to those men He spoke through the prophets, but to us through the Son;
12:4
and to those men in many parts and in many ways, but to us through the Son.
12:5
Then, having discoursed concerning the Son—who He is and what He has wrought—and having exhorted them to obey Him, lest we suffer the same things as the Jews, and having said that He is a high priest after the order of Melchizedek, and having often wished to enter upon this distinction, and having made much preparation beforehand, and having rebuked them as weak, and again having healed and restored them so that they might take courage—
12:6
到那時他才引進那論分別的話,正當他們的聽覺最為敏銳之時;
then at last he introduces the discourse of the distinction, while their ears were at their keenest;
12:7
for one who has grown slack would not readily give heed.
12:8
And that you may learn this, listen to the Scripture, which says:
12:9
'And they did not hearken to Moses because of their faintheartedness.'
12:10
因此,他先用許多方法,或用可畏的話,或用較溫和的話,把他們的沮喪傾倒盡了,然後才進入那論分別的話;
For this reason, having first emptied out their despondency by many means—by things fearful and by things more comforting—then at last he lets himself down into the discourse of the distinction;
12:11
and what does he say? 'For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of God the Most High.'
12:12
And what is indeed marvellous, he shows in the type itself that the difference is great.
12:13
For as I said, from the type he always confirms the truth—the present things from the things that are past—on account of the weakness of his hearers.
12:14
'For this Melchizedek,' he says, 'king of Salem, priest of God the Most High, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him;'
12:15
'to whom also Abraham apportioned a tenth of everything.'
12:16
他既將整個記事簡略陳明,就以奧祕的眼光來察看它;
Having set forth the whole narrative in brief, he contemplated it mystically;
12:17
and first, from the name;
12:18
'First,' he says, 'being interpreted, king of righteousness.'
12:19
因為「洗德」的意思就是仁義;
For 'Sedek' means righteousness;
12:20
therefore Melchizedek is king of righteousness.
12:21
你看連在名字上都是何等的精確麼?誰是仁義王呢?豈不是我們的主耶穌基督麼?其次又是撒冷王,是從那城得名的;
Do you see the exactness even in the names? And who is king of righteousness, but our Lord Jesus Christ? Then also king of Salem, from the city;
12:22
就是說,平安王;
that is to say, king of peace;
12:23
for this is how 'Salem' is interpreted.
12:24
這又是屬於基督的;
Which again belongs to Christ;
12:25
for He it is who made us righteous, and made peace between the things in the heavens and the things upon the earth.
12:26
But what man is king of righteousness and of peace? No other, but our Lord Jesus Christ alone.
12:27
Then he adduces yet another difference, saying: 'Without father, without mother, without genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but made like the Son of God, he remains a priest perpetually.'
12:28
既是如此,那句話「你是照著麥基洗德的等次永遠為祭司」,似乎與此相牴觸,因為麥基洗德已經死了,並未成為永遠的祭司;
Since, then, there stood against him the saying, 'You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek,' whereas Melchizedek had died and did not become a priest for ever;
12:29
For lest anyone should object, saying, 'And who could say this of a man?'—he says, 'I do not speak according to the fact;'
12:30
that is to say, we do not at all know what father he had, or what mother, nor when he received his beginning, nor when he came to his end.
12:31
'And who is this?' he says. For because we do not know, did he therefore not come to an end, or not have parents? Well said—he did indeed come to an end, and did have parents.
12:32
How then is he 'without father, without mother'? How is he one 'having neither beginning of days nor end of life'? How? By his not being recorded in the Scripture.
12:33
And what of this? That, just as this man is 'without father' by reason of not being genealogized, so Christ is so by the very nature of the thing.
12:34
Behold the beginninglessness; behold the endlessness.
12:35
正如論到這人,因為經上沒有寫,我們就既不知道他的生之始,也不知道他命之終;
Just as of this man we know neither beginning of days nor end of life, because of its not being written;
12:36
so also of Jesus we know it not—not because it is not written, but because it does not exist.
12:37
一個是預表,所以是出於「沒有寫」;
The one is a type, and therefore it comes from its not being written;
12:38
but the other is truth, and therefore it comes from its not existing.
12:39
For just as with the names (for here they were merely titles—'king of righteousness' and 'of peace'—but there it was the truth of the realities), so also here they are titles, whereas there it is the truth of the realities.
12:40
那麼祂怎能有起頭呢?你看那兒子是無始的——並不是照著祂沒有本源這意思說;
How then does He have a beginning? You see the Son to be without beginning—not in the sense of having no cause;
12:41
for else, how would He be Son? But rather in the sense of having neither beginning of life nor end.
12:42
Ἀφ .
'And made like,' he says, 'unto the Son of God.'
12:43
And where is the likeness? In that of both this man and that One we are ignorant of the end.
12:44
But of this man it is because it is not written, while of that One it is because it does not exist.
12:45
But if the likeness were to be complete in every respect, there would no longer be type and truth, but both would be type.
12:46
在那些先用線條勾勒的圖畫上,也可看見同樣的情形;
One may see this same thing happening also in painted images sketched in outline;
12:47
因為在那些圖畫裡,有相似之處,也有不相似之處;
for in these there is something like, and also something unlike;
12:48
藉著單純的勾線,形貌上便有某種相似;
for through the mere drawing there is a certain likeness of the form;
12:49
but when the colours are laid on, then the difference is plainly shown—both the like and the unlike.
12:50
'Consider,' he says, 'how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth out of the choicest spoils.'
12:51
Taking courage now, he shows him to be more illustrious than the true realities among the Jews.
12:52
But if he who bore so great a type of Christ was better—not merely than the priests, but even than the very forefather of the priests—
12:53
what might one say concerning the truth itself? You see out of how great an abundance he demonstrates the superiority.
12:54
'Consider,' he says, 'how great this man was, to whom even the patriarch Abraham gave a tenth out of the choicest spoils.'
12:55
The 'choicest spoils' (akrothinia) means the plunder.
12:56
並且不能說亞伯拉罕是把它給了他這位曾一同參戰的人;
And one cannot say that he gave it to him as to one who had shared in the war;
12:57
for on this account he said, 'He met him returning from the slaughter of the kings;'
12:58
showing that he sat at home, and that Abraham gave the firstfruits of the labours accomplished by himself.
12:59
And those of the sons of Levi who receive the priesthood have a commandment to take tithes from the people according to the law—that is, from their own brethren—although these had come forth from the loins of Abraham.
12:60
'So great,' he says, 'is the surpassing dignity of the priesthood, that those who are of equal honour by descent and have the same forefather are far better than the rest.'
12:61
At any rate, they receive tithes from those men.
12:62
When, therefore, someone is found receiving tithes even from these very men, are not these in the rank of laymen, and that one among the priests? And not this only, but he was not even of equal honour with them, but of another race.
12:63
So that Abraham would not have given tithes to one of another tribe, unless the honour had been great.
12:64
What did he accomplish? He made this clearer than the things concerning faith which he handled in the Epistle to the Romans.
12:65
因為在那裡他說,亞伯拉罕既是我們這政體的先祖,也是猶太政體的先祖;
For there he says that Abraham is the forefather both of our own polity and of the Jewish;
12:66
but here he is very bold concerning him, and shows the uncircumcised man to be much better.
12:67
How then did he show it? That Levi gave tithes? 'Abraham,' he says, 'gave them.'
12:68
這與我們有何相干呢?其實正是與你們大有相干;
And what has this to do with us? Nay rather, it has very much to do with you;
12:69
for surely you will not contend that the Levites are greater than Abraham.
12:70
But he who is not reckoned in their genealogy took tithes of Abraham.
12:71
Then too he did not pass it over simply, but added: And he blessed him that had the promises.
12:72
Since this was, up and down, the ground of the Jews' pride, he shows that the one was more honourable than the other, and that from the common judgement of all.
12:73
And beyond all contradiction, he says, the less is blessed of the better.
12:74
That is, it is the judgement of all that the less is blessed by the greater.
12:75
Therefore the type of Christ is greater even than him that had the promises.
12:76
在這裏收取十分之一的,乃是必死的人;
And here indeed dying men receive tithes;
12:77
but there one of whom it is witnessed that he lives.
12:78
但恐怕他們要說那些話——你為何追溯到那麼久遠?亞伯拉罕納了十分之一,與我們的祭司有何相干?講與我們有關的事罷;
But lest they should say those things—Why do you go so far back? What is it to our priests, if Abraham gave tithes? Tell us of the things that concern us;
12:79
and well did he chasten this point, not saying it openly, that he might not wound them.
12:80
Through Abraham, Levi also, who receives tithes, has been tithed.
12:81
How so? For he was yet in the loins of his father when Melchizedek met him.
12:82
That is, Levi was in him, and though not yet born, through him he paid the tithe.
12:83
the greater point, as he wished, gathering from thence also unto a hyperbole.
12:84
Did you see how great is the interval between Abraham and Melchizedek, who bears the type of our High Priest? And he shows that the pre-eminence came about by authority, not by necessity.
12:85
因為那一位獻上十分之一,這是屬乎祭司的;
For the one gave the tithe, which is the part of a priest;
12:86
the other blessed, which is the part of a superior.
12:87
This pre-eminence passes over also to his descendants.
12:88
Wonderfully and superabundantly did he cast out the Jewish things.
12:89
For this reason then he said, You have become dull, since he wished to lay down these things, so that they might not start away.
12:90
因為保羅的智慧正是如此;
For such is the wisdom of Paul;
12:91
preparing the ground first, he thus casts them into the things which he desires.
12:92
For the human race is hard to persuade, and needs much care, and more than plants.
12:93
在那裏乃是身體與泥土的性質,順服在農夫的手下;
For there indeed there is a nature of bodies and of earth, yielding to the hands of the husbandmen;
12:94
在這裏卻是意志,容受許多的變遷,時而揀選這個,時而揀選那個;
but here there is a will, which admits of many changes, and now chooses this, now that;
12:95
for it is prone to slip swiftly toward evil.
12:96
Wherefore we must always guard ourselves, lest we should ever fall asleep.
12:97
因為他說,看哪,保護以色列的,也不打盹,也不睡覺;
For behold, he says, He that keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep;
12:98
Suffer not your foot to be moved.
12:99
He did not say, Be not moved, but, Suffer it not.
12:100
Therefore to give way rests with us, and not with any other.
12:101
因為我們若願意站立得穩,堅定不移,就必不被搖動;
For if we are willing to stand firm and immovable, we shall not be shaken;
12:102
for by speaking thus, he hinted this.
12:103
那麼怎樣呢?難道沒有一件事在乎神麼?誠然萬事都在乎神;
What then? Does nothing rest with God? All things indeed rest with God;
12:104
but not in such a way that our free will should be harmed.
12:105
If then it rests with God, he says, why does He blame us? For this reason I said, Not in such a way that our free will should be harmed.
12:106
所以這既在乎我們,也在乎祂;
It rests then both with us and with Him;
12:107
for we must first choose the good things, and when we have chosen, then He also brings in what is from Himself.
12:108
祂不搶在我們的意願之先,免得損毀我們的自主之權;
He does not anticipate our wills, lest He should destroy our free will;
12:109
but when we have chosen, then He brings in much help to us.
12:110
How then, if it also rests with us, does Paul say:
12:111
It is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy? First, he did not bring it in as his own opinion, but gathered it from what lay before him, and from what had been set forth.
12:112
我要憐憫誰,就憐憫誰;要恩待誰,就恩待誰,他接著說;
I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion, he added;
12:113
So then it is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy.
12:114
Why does He yet find fault? And secondly, one may say this, that to whom the greater part belongs, of him he says that the whole belongs.
12:115
For ours is the choosing and the willing, but God's is the accomplishing and the bringing to an end.
12:116
Since then the greater part is His, he says that the whole is His, speaking this according to human custom.
12:117
因為我們也是這樣行的;
For so also we do;
12:118
We see a house well built, and we say:
12:119
這全是那匠人的功勞;
The whole is the craftsman's;
12:120
其實這並非全是他的,也有工人的,並有那供給材料之主人的,還有許多別人的;
and yet the whole is not his, but also the workmen's, and the master's who furnished the material, and many others';
12:121
but nevertheless, since he contributed the greater part, we say the whole is his.
12:122
又如論到群眾,那裏若有多數的人,我們就說是眾人;
And again, in the case of a multitude, where the many are, we say that all are;
12:123
So also Paul here says, Not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows mercy.
12:124
他這樣說,便成就了兩件極大的事;
And in saying this, he achieves two very great things;
12:125
其一,是叫我們不因所行的善事而高抬自己;
one, that we should not be lifted up over the good deeds we do;
12:126
and secondly, that when we do well, we should ascribe to God the cause of the good things done.
12:127
所以他說,你縱然奔跑,縱然殷勤,也不要以為那善行是你自己的;
Though therefore you run, though you be zealous, he says, do not think the good deed to be your own;
12:128
for unless you obtain the impulse from above, all is in vain.
12:129
只是你必藉著那從上頭來的援助,得著你所竭力追求的,這是極其明顯的;
Except that you will attain what you strive for with the help from thence, is very plain;
12:130
but only if you also run, if you also will.
12:131
He did not therefore say this, that we run in vain, but that we run in vain if we think the whole to be ours, if we do not assign the greater part to God.
12:132
因為神既不願全體都歸乎祂,免得顯出祂是徒然賜冠冕給我們;
For neither did God will the whole to be His, lest He should seem to crown us in vain;
12:133
nor again ours, lest we should fall into arrogance.
12:134
For if, having the lesser part, we are high-minded, what would we be if we were lords of the whole? For God did many things in order to cut off our boastfulness.
12:135
And still His hand is high, he says.
12:136
Πόσοις ἡμᾶς πάθεσι περιέβαλεν , ὥστε ἐκκόψαι ἡμῶν τὸ φρόνημα; πόσοις ἐκύκλωσε θηρίοις;
With how many sufferings did He surround us, so as to cut off our high-mindedness? With how many wild beasts did He encircle us?
12:137
For indeed when some say, What is this? To what end is this? they say these things contrary to what seems good to God.
12:138
He set you in so great a fear, and not even so are you humble-minded; but if ever you should lay hold of a little prosperity, you reach heaven itself in your pride.
12:139
For this reason come the swiftest changes and reversals; and not even so are we chastened.
12:140
For this reason there are continual and untimely deaths, yet we think as though immortal, as though we shall never die.
12:141
So we plunder, so we grasp for more, as though we shall never render an account.
12:142
So we build, as though we should abide here forever; and neither the word of God, sounding in our ears each day, nor the very events themselves, instruct us.
12:143
沒有一日、沒有一時可以說得出,在其中看不見接連不斷的出殯;
There is no day, no hour to be named, in which one may not see continual funerals;
12:144
yet all is in vain, and nothing reaches through to our hardness.
12:145
Not even in the misfortunes of others are we able to become better; or rather, we do not even wish to.
12:146
唯有當我們自己在哀慟中的時候,我們才收斂自持;
But only when we ourselves are in mourning, then are we humbled;
12:147
and if God relaxes His hand, again we lift up our hand against Him.
12:148
無人思念上面的事,無人輕看地上的事,無人仰望天上;
No one minds the things above, no one despises the things on earth, no one looks toward heaven;
12:149
but just as swine bend downward, stooping toward the belly and wallowing in the mire,
12:150
許多人也是如此,用那最污穢的泥漿玷污自己,卻毫不覺察;
so also the many among men, defiling themselves with the most grievous mire, do not perceive it;
12:151
for it is better to be defiled with unclean mud than with sins.
12:152
因為那被前者玷污的人,在短時間內就把它洗淨,變得如同起初從未跌入那泥沼的人一樣;
For he who is defiled by the former washes it off in a short time, and becomes like one who never fell into that slough at all in the first place;
12:153
but he who has fallen into the pit of sin has received a defilement that is not cleansed by water, but requires much time, and exact repentance, and tears, and beatings of the breast, and lamentation greater and more fervent than that which you display over those dearest to you.
12:154
因為這一種污穢是從外面臨到我們的;
For this filth comes upon us from without;
12:155
所以我們也很快把它除去;
wherefore we quickly put it off;
12:156
但那另一種卻是從裏面生出來的;
but that other is begotten from within;
12:157
wherefore only with difficulty do we wash it away and are cleansed.
12:158
For 'out of the heart,' He says, 'proceed evil thoughts, fornications, adulteries, thefts, false witnessings.'
12:159
Wherefore also the prophet said:
12:160
'Create in me a clean heart, O God;'
12:161
'Wash your heart from wickedness, O Jerusalem.'
12:162
Do you see that the right-doing is both ours and God's? And again, 'Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.'
12:163
因此,讓我們照著自己的能力成為清潔的;
Let us then become pure according to our power;
12:164
let us wipe away our sins.
12:165
And how is it possible to wipe them away? The prophet teaches, saying, 'Wash yourselves, become clean, remove your wickednesses from your souls before My eyes.'
12:166
「在我眼前」是甚麼意思呢?因為有些人看似無惡,卻只是在人面前如此,在神面前他們卻分明是粉飾的墳墓;
What is 'before My eyes'? Since some seem to be free from wickedness, but only to men, while to God they are plainly whitewashed tombs;
12:167
for this reason He says, 'Remove them in such a way as I see.'
12:168
'Learn to do good, seek judgment, do justice to the lowly and the poor;'
12:169
'and come, and let us reason together, says the Lord;'
12:170
'and though your sins be as scarlet, I will make them white as snow;'
12:171
'but though they be as crimson, I will make them white as wool.'
12:172
Do you see that we must first cleanse ourselves, and then God cleanses? For having first said, 'Wash yourselves, become clean,' then He added, 'I will make you white.'
12:173
因此,凡已陷入極惡的人,都不要對自己絕望;
Let no one, then, of those who have come to the utmost wickedness despair of himself;
12:174
for even if, He says, you have come into a fixed habit, and almost into the very nature of that wickedness, do not be afraid.
12:175
For this reason, taking colors that do not fade, but are almost made one in substance with the materials that receive them, He declared that they would come into the opposite condition.
12:176
For He did not say simply to wash, but to whiten as snow and as wool, that He might hold out to us good hopes.
12:177
Great, then, is the power of repentance, if indeed it works us white as snow, and whitens us as wool, even though sin had beforehand dyed our souls.
12:178
因此,讓我們殷勤竭力,成為清潔的;
Let us then be diligent to become clean;
12:179
'Judge for the orphan, and do justice to the widow,' He says.
12:180
Do you see everywhere how great with God is the theme of mercy, and of the defense of those who are wronged? Let us pursue these good deeds, and we shall be able, by the
12:181
神的恩典,也得著那將來的美物;
grace of God, to attain also to the good things to come;
12:182
of which may it be granted us all to be deemed worthy, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
