But when again He brings the Firstborn into the world, He says:
3:2
'And let all the angels of God worship Him.'
3:3
And to the angels He says:
3:4
'Who makes His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire.'
3:5
'Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever.'
3:6
Now our Lord Jesus Christ calls His coming in the flesh a 'going forth':
3:7
「撒種的出去撒種」;
'The sower went forth to sow';
3:8
又說:「我從我父出來,到了世上」;
and again, 'I came forth from My Father, and am come';
3:9
and one may see this in many places.
3:10
But Paul calls the very same thing an 'entering in,' saying:
3:11
「再者,神使長子到世上來的時候」;
'But when again He brings the Firstborn into the world';
3:12
calling by this 'introduction' the assumption of the flesh.
3:13
But why have they used different terms concerning Him, and on what account is it thus expressed? It is plain even from the very things signified.
3:14
因為基督恰當地稱祂自己的降臨為「出來」;
For Christ fittingly calls His own coming a 'going forth';
3:15
正如在王宮裡,囚犯和那些得罪了君王的人,都站在外面;
and just as in a royal palace, prisoners and those who have offended the king stand outside;
3:16
而那想要使他們與王和好的,並不領他們進到裡面,倒是自己出到外面與他們談論,直到使他們配得見王的面,才將他們領進去;
and he who wishes to reconcile them does not bring them inside, but himself going out speaks with them outside, until, having made them worthy of the sight of the king, he brings them in;
3:17
so also did Christ do.
3:18
For having come forth to us, that is, having taken on flesh and declared to us the things from the King, He thus brought us in, having cleansed us from our sins and reconciled us.
3:19
For this reason he calls it a going-out.
3:20
But Paul names it an entering-in, drawing the metaphor from those who receive an inheritance, and take possession, and acquire some property.
3:21
因為他說「再者,神使長子進入世界的時候」,這話乃是表明,就是當神將世界交託在祂手中的時候;
For to say, 'And when again He brings the Firstborn into the inhabited world,' this is to declare, when He entrusts to Him the inhabited world;
3:22
for then He acquired the whole of it, when He also became known.
3:23
然而他說這些話,並非論到神的道,乃是論到按肉體的基督;
But he says these things not concerning God the Word, but concerning Christ according to the flesh;
3:24
For if He was in the world, according to John, and the world was made through Him, how could He have been brought in otherwise than in the flesh? 'And let all the angels of God worship Him,' he says.
3:25
Whenever he is about to say something great and lofty, he prepares it beforehand and makes it easy to receive by having the Father be the one who brings in the Son.
3:26
他在前面說過,神不是藉著先知向我們說話,乃是藉著兒子;
He said above that He spoke to us not through the prophets, but through the Son;
3:27
he showed that the Son is greater than the angels, having established this both from the name, and from the Father's being the one who brings in the Son.
3:28
But here he goes on to establish it from yet another consideration as well.
3:29
那麼,是從哪一方面呢?是從敬拜這件事;
From what, then, is this? From the worship;
3:30
這也顯明祂是何等地更為超越;
and this also shows how much greater He is;
3:31
所以,正如有人領某人進入王宮,隨即吩咐宮中的管理者都向他下拜一樣;
Wherefore, just as if someone, having brought a man into the house of a king, straightway commands those who are in charge of it to worship him;
3:32
so he too does the same, speaking of the flesh's introduction into the world, and 'Let all the angels of God worship Him,' adding it for this reason.
3:33
Is it then only angels, and not also the other powers? Away with the thought!
3:34
And to His angels indeed He says, 'Who makes His angels spirits, and His ministers a flame of fire;'
3:35
but to the Son, 'Thy throne, O God, is unto the age of the age.'
3:36
For the former are created, but He is uncreated.
3:37
為什麼論到祂的使者,他說「以……為」呢;
And why does he say to His angels, 'Who makes';
3:38
而論到兒子,為什麼他不說「造」呢?其實本可以這樣述說二者的分別;
but concerning the Son, why did he not say, 'who makes'? And yet it was possible to state the difference in this way;
3:39
論到祂的使者,他固然說「神以風為使者」;
to His angels indeed he says, 'Who makes His angels spirits;'
3:40
而論到兒子,卻可說「主造了我」;
but to the Son, 'The Lord created me;'
3:41
and again, 'God has made Him both Lord and Christ.'
3:42
But neither is that said concerning Christ the Lord the Son, nor is this said concerning God the Word, but concerning Him according to the flesh.
3:43
For where he wished to declare the true difference, he no longer included the angels only, but also every ministering power on high.
3:44
Do you see how he distinguishes, and with how much clarity, creatures and the Creator, ministers and the Master, both the heir and the genuine Son and servants? But to the Son he says:
3:45
Thy throne, O God, is unto the age of the age.
3:46
A rod of uprightness is the rod of Thy kingdom.
3:47
Behold again yet another symbol of kingship.
3:48
Then again to that which is according to the flesh:
3:49
祢喜愛公義,恨惡不法;
Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated lawlessness;
3:50
therefore God, Thy God, has anointed Thee.
3:51
What is 'Thy God'? Since he uttered something great, he again softens it.
3:52
Here he struck at once the Jews, and the followers of Paul of Samosata, and the Arians, and Marcellus and Sabellius, and Marcion.
3:53
怎樣擊打呢?擊打猶太人,是藉著顯明那同一位乃是兩者;
How? The Jews, by showing that the same One is two;
3:54
而擊打其餘的人,我是說撒摩撒他的保羅之徒,是藉著論到祂永恆的存在與非受造的本質;
and the others, I mean the followers of Paul of Samosata, by discoursing these things concerning the eternal existence and the uncreated substance;
3:55
for in contrast to the word 'He made,' he has set down, 'Thy throne, O God, is unto the age of the age.'
3:56
而擊打亞流派,也是這同一要點,並顯明祂不是僕役;
And against the Arians this very same point again, and that He is not a servant;
3:57
擊打馬吉羅和其餘的人,是顯明這是照本體區分的兩個位格;
and against Marcellus and the others, that these are two persons distinguished according to hypostasis;
3:58
and against the Marcionites, that it is not the Godhead that is anointed, but the humanity.
3:59
Then, 'Above Thy fellows,' he says.
3:60
And who are the fellows, but men? That is, Christ did not receive the Spirit by measure.
3:61
Do you see how he always joins the discourse concerning the dispensation to that concerning the uncreated nature? What is clearer than this? Did you see how it is not the same thing, a creature and an offspring? For otherwise he would not have made the distinction, and in contrast to the word 'He made,' added, 'But to the Son He said:'
3:62
神啊,祢的寶座是直到永永遠遠的;
Thy throne, O God, is unto the age of the age;
3:63
nor would he have called the name 'Son' a more distinctive name, if it were a token of the same thing.
3:64
For what would be the difference? For if the creature and the offspring are the same, and those were made, what would be the more distinctive thing? Behold again the word 'God' with the article.
3:65
In the beginning Thou, Lord, hast laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Thy hands.
3:66
天地都要滅沒,祢卻長存;
They shall perish, but Thou remainest;
3:67
它們都要像衣服漸漸舊了,祢要將它們像外袍捲起來,它們也要被更換;
and they all shall grow old as a garment, and as a mantle Thou shalt roll them up, and they shall be changed;
3:68
but Thou art the same, and Thy years shall not fail.
3:69
But when He brings the Firstborn into the inhabited world, lest you should suppose it to be a gift bestowed on Him later, this he both corrected beforehand above, and again corrects, saying:
3:70
Behold, again he strikes Paul of Samosata a mortal blow, and Arius too, by fitting to the Son those things which pertain to the Father.
3:71
與此同時,他還暗示了另一件附帶的事,且是比這更大的事;
And along with this he hinted at yet another thing besides, and one greater than this;
3:72
for he also indicated the transformation of the world, saying:
3:73
They shall grow old as a garment, and as a mantle Thou shalt roll them up, and they shall be changed.
3:74
Which he says also in the Epistle to the Romans, that He will transform the world.
3:75
And to declare the ease of it, he added:
3:76
For just as if someone should roll up a mantle, so He Himself will both roll up the world and change it.
3:77
但祂若如此輕易地成就那向著更美更善的變化與創造,難道在那較小的創造上,祂還需要另一位嗎?你們要羞愧到幾時呢?同時這也是極大的安慰,就是曉得萬事必不長此不變,乃是萬物都要經歷變遷,一切都要被更換,而祂自己卻永遠活著,並無窮無盡地活著;
But if He works the transformation and creation into something better and superior so easily, did He, in the lesser creation, have need of another? How long will you not be ashamed? And at the same time this too is a very great consolation, to know that things will not remain thus, but all things will undergo change, and all things will be altered, while He Himself abides ever living, and living without end;
3:78
And Thy years, he says, shall not fail.
3:79
But to which of the angels has He ever said:
3:80
Sit at My right hand, until I make Thine enemies a footstool for Thy feet? Behold again he encourages them, seeing that their enemies are destined to be conquered, and their enemies are the very same who are also Christ's.
3:81
這又是國度的標記,是同等尊榮的標記,是尊貴而非軟弱的標記,就是父為那些干犯兒子的事而發怒;
This again is a mark of kingship, this of equal honour, this of honour, not of weakness, that the Father is angry on behalf of the things done against the Son;
3:82
this is a proof of great love and of genuineness, such as that from a father toward a son.
3:83
For he who is angry on His behalf, how is he a stranger to Him? Until I make Thine enemies.
3:84
Which also in the second Psalm he says:
3:85
He that dwells in the heavens shall laugh them to scorn, and the Lord shall mock them.
3:86
Then shall He speak to them in His wrath, and in His fury shall He trouble them.
3:87
Those who did not wish me to reign over them, bring here before me, and slay them.
3:88
For that these words are His own, hear what He says also in another place:
3:89
'How often would I have gathered thy children together, and ye would not? Behold, your house is left unto you desolate.'
3:90
And again: 'The kingdom shall be taken from you, and shall be given to a nation bringing forth the fruits thereof.'
3:91
又說:「凡跌在這石頭上的,必要跌碎;
And again: 'Whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken;'
3:92
'but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.'
3:93
And in another sense too: He who is to judge them there has all the more here exacted from them the penalty for their insolence against Himself.
3:94
So that it belongs solely to the honour paid to the Son, this word: 'Till I
3:95
make thine enemies thy footstool.'
3:96
'Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?' What wonder is it, he says, if they minister to the Son, when they minister even unto our salvation? See how he exalts their minds, and shows the great honour of God toward us, seeing that He has appointed the angels—who are above us—to hold this ministry, the ministry on our behalf.
3:97
As one might say: For this end He uses them, he says; this is the ministry of angels, to serve God for our salvation.
3:98
所以這乃是天使的工作,就是行一切事,為叫弟兄們得救;
So that this is an angelic work: to do all things for the salvation of the brethren;
3:99
更確切地說,這乃是基督自己的工作;
or rather, it is the work of Christ Himself;
3:100
for He indeed saves as Master, but these as servants.
3:101
And we too, though we are servants, are yet fellow-servants of the angels.
3:102
他說,你們為何對天使張口驚奇呢?他們是神兒子的僕人,並且多次為我們的緣故被差遣,為我們的救恩效力;
Why do you gape in wonder at the angels? he says. They are servants of the Son of God, and in many places are sent for our sakes, and minister unto our salvation;
3:103
so that they are our fellow-servants.
3:104
你想想,他怎樣不在受造之物之間分別出甚大的差異;
Consider how he assigns no great difference to the created beings;
3:105
然而天使與人之間的距離原是甚遠的;
and yet the distance between angels and men is great;
3:106
but nevertheless he brings them down close to us, all but saying:
3:107
They toil for us, they run about for our sakes, they serve us—as one might say—as attendants.
3:108
This is their ministry: to be sent everywhere for our sakes.
3:109
And of such examples the Old Testament is full, and full also is the New.
3:110
For when angels bring good tidings to shepherds, when they come to Mary, when to Joseph, when they sit upon the tomb, when they are sent to tell the disciples:
3:111
'Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye gazing up into heaven?'—when they release Peter from the prison, when they converse with Philip—how do they not minister unto us? Consider then the honour, how great it is, when God sends the angels as attendants to men as unto friends, when an angel appears to Cornelius, when an angel brings all the apostles out of the prison and says:
3:112
'Go, stand and speak in the temple to the people all the words of this life.'
3:113
Why do I mention the rest? To Paul himself also an angel appears.
3:114
Do you see them ministering unto us for God's sake, and ministering in the greatest matters? Therefore Paul says:
3:115
'All things are yours, whether life or death, whether the world, whether things present, whether things to come.'
3:116
子固然也曾被差遣,但不是作僕人,也不是作服役者,乃是作子,作獨生子,與父的旨意相同;
The Son too, indeed, was sent, but not as a servant, nor as a minister, but as a Son and Only-begotten, willing the same things as the Father;
3:117
因為祂並非從一處遷移到另一處,乃是取了肉身;
for He did not pass from place to place, but took upon Himself flesh;
3:118
but these change their places, and leaving the former places in which they are, thus come to others in which they were not.
3:119
And this again, encouraging them, he says:
3:120
Why are you afraid? Angels minister unto us.
3:121
And having spoken concerning the Son—both the things pertaining to the dispensation, and those pertaining to the creation, and those pertaining to the kingdom—and having shown His equality of honour, and that He rules as Master, not over men only, but also over the powers above, thereafter he exhorts them, having so framed his argument that we should give heed to what has been heard; and he says:
3:122
'Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard.'
3:123
他在此原想說,我們應當比對律法更加留意;他卻默然不明說,然而他仍在論證的鋪陳中把這意思顯明了出來,並非藉著勸告,也非藉著勸勉;
Here, wishing to say that we ought to give more heed than to the law, he passed it over in silence; yet nevertheless he makes this clear in the framing of his argument, not in counsel nor in exhortation;
3:124
他說:「那藉著天使所傳的話,既是確定的,凡干犯悖逆的,都受了該受的報應;
'For if the word spoken by angels,' he says, 'was steadfast, and every transgression and disobedience received a just recompense of reward;'
3:125
'how shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation? which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard Him.'
3:126
我們為甚麼應當越發留意所聽見的呢?難道那些不是出於神,這些也不是麼?因此他若不是指「比律法更甚」,就是指「甚大地留意」;
Why ought we to give the more heed to the things which we have heard? Are not both those things of God, and these? Either then he means 'more than the law,' or that 'greatly';
3:127
not by way of comparison—God forbid.
3:128
For since, by reason of the long lapse of time, they held a high opinion of the Old Testament, while these things, being still new, were despised, he shows abundantly that we ought rather to give heed to these.
3:129
How? All but saying that both these and those are of God, but not in like manner.
3:130
這一點他在後面向我們顯明;
And this he shows us afterwards;
3:131
for the present he does so more superficially,
3:132
framing it, but afterwards more plainly, saying:
3:133
「那前約若沒有瑕疵;
'For if that first covenant had been faultless;'
3:134
and again, 'For that which decayeth and waxeth old is nigh unto vanishing away.'
3:135
But he does not yet dare to say any such thing in the opening portions, until he has first laid hold of and secured the hearer by his many preliminary preparations.
3:136
Why then ought we to give the more heed? Tell me. 'Lest at any time,' he says, 'we should let them slip.'
3:137
That is, lest we perish, lest we fall away.
3:138
And here he shows the grievousness of the falling away, that it is hard for what has slipped away to return again, inasmuch as this came to pass through slothfulness.
3:139
他這用詞是取自箴言的;
And he took the expression from the Proverbs;
3:140
'For, my son,' it says, 'do not let them slip;'
3:141
藉此既顯明滑跌之易,又顯明滅亡之可怕;
thereby showing both the easiness of the slip, and the grievousness of the destruction;
3:142
that is, disobedience is not without peril to us.
3:143
And by the things with which he frames his argument he shows that the punishment is greater.
3:144
But he again leaves it in the form of a question, and not in a conclusion.
3:145
因為這也是使言論不致觸怒人的一法:不是處處由自己作出判斷、下定論斷,乃是讓聽者作主,使他自己去下那判決;
For this too is a way of making one's discourse inoffensive: not everywhere pronouncing the judgement of oneself as a decree, but leaving the hearer to be master, that he himself may bring in the verdict;
3:146
which also made them become more candid.
3:147
This the prophet Nathan does in the Old Testament, and in Matthew Christ does it, saying:
3:148
「園主要怎樣處治那些園戶呢?」──也強使他們自己作出那判決;
'What will he do unto the husbandmen of that vineyard?'—compelling them too to bring forth the verdict;
3:149
for this is the greatest victory.
3:150
For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast, he did not add, 'much more that which was spoken by Christ;'
3:151
but this indeed he left aside, and stated the lesser point, 'How shall we escape, if we neglect so great a salvation?' And see how he makes the comparison.
3:152
'For if the word spoken by angels,' he says.
3:153
在那裡是「藉著天使」,在這裡卻是「藉著主」;
There, 'by angels,' but here, 'by the Lord;'
3:154
and there indeed a 'word,' but here 'salvation.'
3:155
Then, lest anyone should say, 'What of it? These things which thou sayest, O Paul, are they Christ's?'—he anticipates it, and demonstrates that they carry trustworthiness.
3:156
For by his having heard them from Him he shows their trustworthiness, and by their being now spoken by God—not simply by a voice being borne along, as in the case of Moses, but by signs coming to pass and deeds bearing witness.
3:157
But what is the meaning of, 'For if the word spoken by angels was steadfast'? And in the Epistle to the Galatians he speaks somewhat in this manner:
3:158
「藉著天使,經中保之手所設立的」;
'Ordained through angels by the hand of a mediator';
3:159
又說:「你們既受了天使所傳佈的律法,竟不遵守」;
and again, 'You received the law by the ordinance of angels, and did not keep it';
3:160
and everywhere he declares that it was given through angels.
3:161
如今有些人說,他在此暗指摩西;
Now some say that he is hinting at Moses;
3:162
for here, they claim, he speaks of many angels.
3:163
And he says that these angels here are those in heaven.
3:164
那麼我們該怎麼說呢?他所指的,或是單指十誡;
What then are we to say? Either he means the Decalogue alone;
3:165
for there Moses spoke, and God answered.
3:166
或是說,當神頒佈命令時,有天使在場;
Or he means that angels were present while God gave His ordinances;
3:167
or that, concerning all the things spoken and done in the Old Testament, he says these things as though angels had a share in them.
3:168
But how does he say elsewhere that 'the law was given through Moses,' while here he says it was given through angels? For he says, 'And God came down in thick darkness.'
3:169
'For if the word spoken through angels became steadfast'—
3:170
「確定的」是什麼意思?可以說,就是真實而可信的;
What is 'steadfast'? True, as one might say, and trustworthy;
3:171
because at the fitting time all that was foretold came to pass.
3:172
所以他所指的,或是這個意思,或是說它得勝了,那些警戒都成就了;
So either he means this, or that it prevailed, and the threats came into effect;
3:173
or by 'word' he means the commandments.
3:174
因為從神差來的天使,曾在律法之外傳下許多命令;
For angels sent from God gave many commands apart from the law;
3:175
as at Bochim, in the time of the Judges, in the case of Samson.
3:176
And it seems to me that he perhaps says this, indicating rather by it the things administered through the angels.
3:177
What then shall we say? That the angels who were entrusted with the nation were present then, and they themselves made the trumpets, and the rest—the fire, the thick darkness.
3:178
'And every transgression and disobedience,' he says, 'received a just recompense of reward.'
3:179
Not this one and not that one, but every one.
3:180
'Nothing,' he says, 'remained unpunished, but it received a just recompense of reward.'
3:181
他到底為什麼這樣說呢?這是保羅的習慣,就是不甚拘泥於用詞,反而不加分別地把甚至聽來不雅的字眼用在美好的事物上;
And why ever did he speak thus? It is Paul's custom not to make much account of the words, but indifferently to apply even ill-sounding terms to good things;
3:182
'Bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.'
3:183
Elsewhere he has put 'recompense' in place of 'punishment,' and here he calls punishment a 'reward.'
3:184
'For it is a righteous thing with God,' he says, 'to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you, and to you who are troubled, rest.'
3:185
這就是說,公義並沒有被敗壞,反而神追討到底,把刑罰轉在那些犯罪的人身上;
That is to say, justice was not corrupted, but God pursued it, and turned the penalty upon those who had sinned;
3:186
and yet not all sins come to light, unless the ordinances be transgressed.
3:187
'How then shall we,' he says, 'escape, if we neglect so great a salvation?' By this he showed that that salvation was not any great thing.
3:188
And well did he add the phrase, 'so great.'
3:189
'For He will not now,' he says, 'save us from wars, nor bestow the land and the good things in the land, but there will be an abolishing of death, a destruction of the devil, a kingdom of the heavens, life eternal.'
3:190
For all these things he intimated concisely by saying, 'neglecting so great a salvation.'
3:191
接著他又加上這救恩的可信之處;
Then he adds also its trustworthiness;
3:192
「這救恩起先是主親自傳講的」;
'Which having at the first begun to be spoken through the Lord';
3:193
這就是說,它是從源頭本身得著開端的;
that is, it had its beginning from the very fountain;
3:194
no man conveyed it across to the earth, no created power, but the Only-begotten Himself.
3:195
'It was confirmed to us by those who heard.'
3:196
「證實了」是什麼意思?就是被人相信了,或是應驗了;
What is 'was confirmed'? It was believed, or it came to pass;
3:197
因為他說,我們有那憑質;
for we have, he says, the pledge;
3:198
that is, it was not extinguished, it did not cease, but it holds sway and prevails.
3:199
And the cause of this is that the divine power is at work.
3:200
What is 'by those who heard'? That is, those who heard from the Lord themselves confirmed it to us.
3:201
This is a great thing and worthy of trust.
3:202
路加在他福音書的開頭也這樣說;
Which Luke also says at the beginning of his Gospel;
3:203
'Even as they delivered them unto us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word.'
3:204
How then was it confirmed? What then, he says, if those who heard invented it? So then, to do away with this, and to show that the grace is not of man, he added, 'God also bearing them witness.'
3:205
For God would not have borne witness to them, had they invented it.
3:206
They indeed bear witness, but God also bears witness.
3:207
祂是怎樣作見證的呢?不是用言語,也不是用聲音;
How does He bear witness? Not by word, nor by voice;
3:208
因為即或這樣,也是可信的;
for this too would have been worthy of belief;
3:209
but how? By signs and wonders and manifold powers.
3:210
他用「各樣的異能」這話實在是好,表明了恩賜的豐盛;
Well did he put 'manifold powers,' indicating the abundance of the gifts;
3:211
which did not happen in the case of former times, neither so many signs, nor so diverse.
3:212
That is, we did not simply believe those men, but through signs and wonders.
3:213
So that it is not those men whom we believe, but God Himself.
3:214
'And by distributions of the Holy Spirit, according to His own will.'
3:215
那麼術士也行神蹟,猶太人又說祂是靠著別西卜趕鬼,這又當如何呢?然而他們所行的神蹟並非這樣的;
What then of the fact that sorcerers also work signs, and that the Jews said He cast out the demons by Beelzebul? But they do not work such signs as these;
3:216
for this reason he said, 'manifold powers.'
3:217
For those are not power, but weakness and illusion and empty things.
3:218
For this reason he said, 'by distributions of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.'
3:219
在此,他在我看來還暗指著另一件事;
Here he seems to me to be hinting at something else also;
3:220
for it is likely that there were not many there possessing gifts, and that these had failed, since the people had become more sluggish.
3:221
所以為要在這事上也安慰他們,不至叫他們跌倒,他就把這一切都歸於神的旨意;
In order therefore that he might comfort them in this also, and not let them fall, he referred the whole matter to the counsel of God;
3:222
他說,祂自己知道什麼對誰有益,就這樣分派恩典;
He Himself knows, he says, to whom what is profitable, and thus He apportions the grace;
3:223
which he does also in the Epistle to the Corinthians, saying,
3:224
「神隨自己的意思,把我們各人安置了」;
'God has set each one of us, even as He willed';
3:225
and again, 'But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for profit, according to His own will.'
3:226
He shows that the gift is according to the will of the Father.
3:227
並且許多人,往往因著生活不潔、怠惰,就沒有領受恩賜;
And often, because of an unclean and sluggish life, many did not receive a gift;
3:228
然而有時候,有些人雖然過著美好而純潔的生活,卻沒有領受恩賜;
Yet sometimes men who led a good and pure life did not receive it;
3:229
and why so? That they might not be thrown headlong, that they might not be puffed up, that they might not become more slothful, that they might not be the more lifted up.
3:230
For if even apart from any spiritual gift the mere consciousness of a pure life is enough to lift a man up, how much more so when grace is present besides.
3:231
所以恩賜寧可賜給那謙卑的、樸實無偽的人;
And so it was rather to the humble and the guileless that it was given;
3:232
尤其是賜給那樸實無偽的人;
and most of all to the guileless;
3:233
for 'in singleness,' it says, 'and in gladness of heart.'
3:234
因為神也藉此更加激勵他們;
For by this too He rather spurred them on;
3:235
and if they were somewhat slothful, He pricked them to compunction.
3:236
For the humble man, who does not imagine great things of himself, becomes more earnest when he receives a gift, seeing that he has received it beyond his desert and not as one deserving.
3:237
But he who thinks he has accomplished something, regarding the matter as a debt owed to him, is also puffed up.
3:238
So then God dispenses this matter in a way that is profitable.
3:239
有人也能在教會中看見同樣的事發生;
And one may see this same thing happening in the Church too;
3:240
for one man has the gift of teaching speech, while another cannot so much as open his mouth.
3:241
所以沒有人該為這事憂愁;
Let no one, then, be grieved on this account;
3:242
for 'to each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for what is profitable.'
3:243
For if a man who is master of a household knows to whom he will entrust what, how much more does God, who understands the mind of men, who knows all things before they come to be.
3:244
There is one thing only worthy of grief—to sin—and nothing else.
3:245
Do not say, 'Why have I no money?' or, 'Had I any, I would have given to the poor.'
3:246
你並不知道,你若真有了錢財,是否反倒會變得更加貪婪;
You do not know whether, had you had it, you might not rather have become the more grasping;
3:247
for now you say these things, but once put to the test you would be another man.
3:248
因為我們飽足的時候,總以為自己能夠禁食;
For even when we are full, we think that we are able to fast;
3:249
but when we have gone a little while without food, another reasoning comes over us.
3:250
同樣,當我們沒有醉酒的時候,總以為自己能勝過這情慾;
Again, when we are free from drunkenness, we think we can master the passion;
3:251
but when we have been caught by it, we no longer can.
3:252
Do not say, 'Why have I not received the gift of teaching?' or, 'Had I it, I would have edified thousands.'
3:253
You do not know whether, had you had it, it might not have turned to your condemnation, whether envy or sloth might not have made you hide the talent.
3:254
既是如此,你就從這一切事上得了釋放,即使你不按時分糧給人,也不會被追究;
As it is, then, you are freed from all these things, and if you do not distribute the measure of grain, you are not called to account;
3:255
but then you would have been liable to ten thousand charges.
3:256
And besides, not even now are you without a gift.
3:257
你要在小事上顯明,你若有了那更大的恩賜,會是怎樣的人;
Show in the little what sort of man you would have been, had you had that greater gift;
3:258
因為經上說:「你們在最小的事上若不忠信,誰還把那大的交託你們呢?」你要顯得像那寡婦一樣;
'for if you are not faithful in the little,' it says, 'who will give you the great?' Show yourself like the widow;
3:259
for she had two mites, and put in all that she possessed.
3:260
你尋求錢財麼?先要顯明你輕看那少的,好叫我在多的事上也能信託你;
Do you seek money? Show that you despise the little, that I may trust you concerning the much as well;
3:261
but if you do not even despise these small things, much less would you despise those great ones.
3:262
Again, in the matter of speech, show that you have made fitting use of exhortation and counsel.
3:263
You have no outward eloquence? You have no abundance of ideas? Yet nevertheless you know these common things.
3:264
你有兒女,你有鄰舍,你有朋友,你有弟兄,你有親屬;
You have a child, you have a neighbor, you have a friend, you have a brother, you have kinsfolk;
3:265
縱然你不能在教會中公開發表長篇的講論,你卻能在私下勸勉這些人;
and though in public in the church you cannot deliver a long discourse, you can exhort these in private;
3:266
在這裡並不需要口才修辭,也不需要冗長的長篇大論;
here there is no need of rhetoric, nor of a long, drawn-out address;
3:267
show in these cases that, even had you had the gift of speech, you would not have been negligent.
3:268
但你若在小事上不殷勤,我怎能在大事上信託你呢?至於各人都能行這事,你且聽保羅怎樣把這事也託付給平信徒;
But if you are not diligent in the little, how shall I trust you concerning the great? That each one is able to do this, hear how Paul entrusted this even to laymen;
3:269
'Each of you,' he says, 'build up one another, even as also you do;'
3:270
and, 'Comfort one another with these words.'
3:271
God knows how to distribute to each.
3:272
Are you better than Moses? Hear how he cries out in his distress.
3:273
'Am I able,' he says, 'to bear them, that You have said to me, Carry them, as a nurse carries the suckling child?' What then did God do? He took of Moses' spirit and gave it to the others, showing that not even when he was bearing them was this gift his own, but the Spirit's.
3:274
你若有了那恩賜,就必屢次自高,屢次偏離;
If you had the gift, often would you have been lifted up, often would you have been turned aside;
3:275
you do not know yourself as God knows you.
3:276
「這是為著甚麼,又是因著甚麼呢?」當神安排萬事的時候,我們不可向祂索取交代;
'To what end this, and why this?'—when God orders things, let us not demand an accounting of Him;
3:277
for this belongs to the utmost impiety and madness.
3:278
We are servants, and servants far removed from the Master, who do not understand so much as the things at our very feet.
3:279
所以我們不可好奇窺探神的旨意,只要持守祂所賜的,無論是小的,是至微的,我們就必蒙祂稱許;
Let us not, then, curiously scrutinize the counsel of God, but let us keep what He has given—though it be small, though it be least—and we shall by all means be approved;
3:280
or rather, none of God's gifts is small.
3:281
Do you grieve that you have not the gift of teaching? Tell me now, which seems to you the greater—the gift of teaching, or the gift of healings? Assuredly the latter.
3:282
And what? Does not the giving of sight to the blind seem to you greater than the driving away of diseases? Does not the raising of the dead seem to you greater? And what, tell me? Does not the doing of this by word seem to you less than doing it by shadows and handkerchiefs? Which then, tell me, would you choose—to raise the dead by shadows and handkerchiefs, or to have the gift of teaching? Assuredly the former, you will say—to raise the dead by shadows and handkerchiefs.
3:283
If then I show you that there is another gift far greater than this,
3:284
and it is in your power to receive it, yet you do not receive it, so that you are justly deprived of these too—what will you say? Yet this gift it is possible not for one, nor for a second only, but for all to have.
3:285
我知道你們必張口驚愕,感到詫異,因你們將要聽見,你們竟能有一樣恩賜,比叫死人復活、叫瞎眼看見更大,並能行使徒時代所行的那些事;
I know that you have gaped in wonder and are astonished, if indeed you are about to hear that it is possible for you to have a gift greater than raising the dead and giving sight to the blind, and doing those very things that were done in the days of the apostles;
3:286
and perhaps it even seems incredible to you.
3:287
What then is this gift? Love.
3:288
for this word is not mine, but Christ's, speaking through Paul.
3:289
For what does he say? 'Earnestly desire the greater gifts. And yet I show you a still more excellent way.'
3:290
What is 'a still more excellent way'? What he means is this:
3:291
the Corinthians at that time thought highly of themselves over their gifts, and those who had tongues—the least of gifts—were puffed up against the rest.
3:292
Do you desire gifts at all? I show you a way of gifts, not merely surpassing, but surpassing beyond measure.
3:293
Then he says, 'If I speak with the tongues of angels, but have not love, I am nothing;'
3:294
and, 'if I have faith, so as to remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.'
3:295
Do you see the gift? Then earnestly desire this gift.
3:296
這比叫死人復活更大;
This is greater than raising the dead;
3:297
this is far better than all the others.
3:298
And that this is indeed so, hear what Christ says when conversing with His disciples:
3:299
'By this shall all know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.'
3:300
Then, showing by what mark, He did not say 'the miracles,' but what? 'If you have love among one another.'
3:301
And again He says to the Father:
3:302
'By this shall they know that You sent Me, if they be one.'
3:303
And He Himself said to the disciples:
3:304
'A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another.'
3:305
因此,這樣的人比那些叫死人復活的更為可敬、更為光耀;
Such a man, therefore, is more venerable and more illustrious than those who raise the dead;
3:306
for the latter is wholly of God's grace, but this is also of your own diligence.
3:307
正是這相愛顯明一個人是基督的門徒,是與基督同釘十字架的,是與地上之物毫無相干的;
This it is that shows the disciple of Christ, the crucified one, the man who has nothing in common with the earth;
3:308
without this, not even martyrdom can profit anything.
3:309
And that you may learn this, behold it clearly:
3:310
有福的保羅提出了諸般美德的兩個高峰──其實是三個──就是在神蹟上的、在知識上的、在生活上的;
the blessed Paul took two summits of the virtues—rather, three—those in signs, those in knowledge, those in life;
3:311
and he declared that without this love these things are nothing.
3:312
But how these things are nothing, I will tell you:
3:313
'If I bestow all my goods to feed the poor,' he says, 'but have not love, I am nothing.'
3:314
For it is possible even for one who feeds the poor not to be loving, and for one who lavishes his money.
3:315
關於這些事,我們在論到愛的那一段裡已經講得足夠,我們就在那裡把讀者指引過去;
These things have been sufficiently spoken of by us in the passage concerning love, and thither we refer our readers;
3:316
meanwhile, as I said, let us be zealous for the gift, let us love one another, and we shall need nothing else for the perfecting of virtue, but all things shall be easy for us without toil, and we shall accomplish everything with great diligence.
3:317
然而有人說:「看哪,我們如今也彼此相愛啊;
'But behold,' one says, 'even now we do love one another;
3:318
for one man has two or three friends, and another has four.'
3:319
但這並不是為神的緣故而愛,乃是為要得人的愛;
But this is not to love for God's sake, but for the sake of being loved in return;
3:320
whereas to love for God's sake does not have this as the beginning of love, but such a man will be disposed toward all men as toward brethren—loving those of the same faith as genuine brethren, and pitying the heretics and Greeks and Jews as brethren indeed according to nature, but who happen to be depraved and worthless, and wasting away over them and weeping for them.
3:321
In this we shall be like God, if we love all men, even our enemies—not if we work signs.
3:322
Since indeed we marvel at God both when He works wonders, but much more when He acts with loving-kindness, when He is long-suffering.
3:323
If then even in God's case that is worthy of great wonder, much more in the case of men is it plain that this is what makes us admirable.
3:324
縱然我們連一場熱病也不能趕退,我們卻絲毫不遜於保羅、彼得,以及那些叫萬千死人復活的人;
And we shall have nothing less than Paul and Peter and those who raised ten thousand dead, even though we cannot drive away a fever;
3:325
but without that love, though we should work greater signs than the apostles themselves, though we should expose ourselves to ten thousand perils for the faith, it will be no advantage to us.
3:326
這些話並非我自己說的,乃是那被愛所養育的人親自深知的;
And these things I do not say of myself, but the very nursling of love knows them well;
3:327
我們必能得著那所應許的美善;
we shall be able to attain the good things that have been promised;
3:328
of which may it be granted that we all partake, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
