Now the first covenant also had ordinances of divine service, and its earthly sanctuary.
15:2
For a tabernacle was prepared, the first, in which were the lampstand and the table and the setting forth of the loaves, which is called the Holy Place.
15:3
在第二層幔子後面,還有一層帳幕,稱為至聖所,有金香壇,和四面包金的約櫃;
And after the second veil was the tabernacle which is called the Holy of Holies, having a golden altar of incense, and the ark of the covenant overlaid on every side with gold;
15:4
櫃裏有盛嗎哪的金罐,和亞倫發過芽的杖,並兩塊約版;
in which was a golden jar holding the manna, and Aaron's rod that budded, and the tablets of the covenant;
15:5
櫃上面有那榮耀的基路伯,遮掩著施恩座;
and above it the cherubim of glory, overshadowing the mercy seat;
15:6
concerning which things it is not now possible to speak in detail.
15:7
他已經從祭司、從祭司的職任、從那約,指明那前約是要終結的;
He has shown, from the priest, from the priesthood, from the covenant, that that former order was to have an end;
15:8
he now shows it also from the very fashion of the tabernacle.
15:9
How? By calling one the Holy Place, and the other the Holy of Holies.
15:10
那聖所乃是前一時代的表號;
Now the Holy Place is the symbol of the former age;
15:11
因為在那裏,凡事都是藉著祭牲成就的;
for there everything is done by means of sacrifices;
15:12
至於至聖所,乃是這現今時代的表號;
but the Holy of Holies is the symbol of this present time;
15:13
and he calls the Holy of Holies heaven, and the veil of heaven likewise, and the flesh entering within the veil—that is, through the veil of His flesh.
15:14
But it is well to take up this passage from the beginning and to speak of it.
15:15
What then does he say? 'Now the first covenant also had...'
15:16
「條例」是甚麼意思呢?就是表號,或律例;
What is 'ordinances'? Symbols, or statutes;
15:17
彷彿他說:那時它有這些,如今卻沒有了;
as if he were saying, Then it had them, now it has them not;
15:18
by this he shows that it has already given way.
15:19
So that now, even if it stands, it does not exist.
15:20
He calls it 'earthly,' since it was permitted to all to enter, and the place was open to view in the same house, where the priests stood, where the Jews, the proselytes, the Greeks, the Nazoraeans stood.
15:21
既然連希臘人都能進入,他便稱它為屬世界的;
Since then it was accessible even to Greeks, he calls it earthly;
15:22
for surely the Jews were not the world.
15:23
他說:「那預備好的第一層帳幕,稱為聖所;
'For a tabernacle,' he says, 'was prepared, the first, which is called the Holy Place;
15:24
in which were the lampstand and the table and the setting forth of the loaves.'
15:25
'And after the second veil.'
15:26
So then there was not one veil only, but there was also an outer veil.
15:27
'A tabernacle, which is called the Holy of Holies.'
15:28
See how everywhere he calls it a tabernacle, from the dwelling there.
15:29
'Having,' he says, 'a golden altar of incense, and the ark of the covenant overlaid on every side with gold.'
15:30
in which was a golden jar holding the manna, and the rod of Aaron that budded, and the tablets of the covenant.
15:31
All these things were solemn and splendid memorials of Jewish ingratitude.
15:32
And the tablets of the covenant.
15:33
And for this reason, in order to transmit the remembrance to their descendants, He commanded that it be laid up in the golden jar.
15:34
And the rod of Aaron that budded.
15:35
Since, then, the Jews were also ungrateful, and though continually benefited kept forgetting, for this reason, by the command of the lawgiver, they laid these things up in the golden jar, and thus transmitted the remembrance to their descendants.
15:36
And above it the cherubim of glory overshadowing the mercy-seat.
15:37
What is 'the cherubim of glory'? Either the glorious ones, he means, or those that are beneath God.
15:38
And he rightly extols these things in his discourse, that he may show that the things which came after them are greater.
15:39
Concerning which, he says, it is not now possible to speak in detail.
15:40
Here he hinted that these were not merely the things seen, but were certain enigmas.
15:41
他說,關於這些事,如今無法逐一細說;
Concerning which, he says, it is not now possible to speak in detail;
15:42
perhaps as requiring a lengthy discourse.
15:43
Now these things having been thus prepared, into the first tabernacle the priests enter continually, accomplishing the services.
15:44
這就是說,這些物件雖然存在,猶太人自己卻未曾享受其中的益處;
That is, these things existed, but the Jews themselves did not enjoy the benefit of them;
15:45
so that they belonged not so much to those men as to those for whom they were prefigured.
15:46
But into the second the high priest alone enters once a year, not without blood, which he offers for himself and for the errors of the people.
15:47
你如今看見這些預表早已預先設立了嗎?免得他們說:「怎能只有一次的祭?大祭司怎能只獻一次?」他便顯明,從起初原就是如此;
Do you see now that the types were laid down beforehand? For lest they should say, 'How is there one sacrifice, and how did the high priest offer once,' he shows that it was so from the beginning;
15:48
seeing that the more holy place was one, and...
15:49
for even then, he says, the high priest offered once.
15:50
他說得好:「並非不帶著血」;
And well did he say, 'Not without blood';
15:51
確非不帶著血,卻不是用這樣的血;
not indeed without blood, yet not with this blood;
15:52
for the transaction was not of such magnitude.
15:53
He shows that it shall be, not consumed by fire, but rather displayed through blood.
15:54
For since he called the cross a sacrifice—one having neither fire nor wood, nor offered many times, but offered once in blood—
15:55
he shows that the ancient sacrifice also was of this kind: it was offered once in blood.
15:56
'Which he offers,' he says, 'for himself and for the errors of the people.'
15:57
He did not say 'sins,' but 'errors,' that they might not be highminded.
15:58
For even if you did not sin willingly, he says,
15:59
yet you erred unwillingly, and of this no one is pure.
15:60
And everywhere he adds the phrase 'for himself,' showing that Christ is far greater than the high priest among the Jews.
15:61
For if He is separated from our sins, how did He offer for Himself? Why then, one asks, did you say these things? Because this belongs to One who is superior.
15:62
And thereupon he goes on to contemplate and says:
15:63
The Holy Spirit signifying this, that the way into the holy places was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was yet standing.
15:64
For this reason, he says, these things have been thus prepared, that we may learn that the Holy of Holies—that is, heaven—is as yet untrodden.
15:65
Let us not, then, because we do not set foot in it, suppose that it does not even exist, since neither did we set foot in the holy places.
15:66
Which is a parable, he says, for the time then present.
15:67
他所說的「現今的時候」是指哪個時候?就是基督降臨以前的時候;
What 'present time' does he mean? The time before the coming of Christ;
15:68
因為基督降臨以後,就不再是那現今的時候了;
for after the coming of Christ it is no longer a present time;
15:69
for how could it be, when that which came after it has reached its end? And, indicating something else besides, he says this:
15:70
這是個比喻,是指著現今的時候說的;
Which is a parable for the time then present;
15:71
that is, the type came into being.
15:72
According to which both gifts and sacrifices are offered, which cannot, as touching the conscience, make perfect the worshipper.
15:73
Do you see how clearly he has shown from this what is meant by 'The law made nothing perfect,' and by 'If that first had been faultless'? How so? As touching the conscience.
15:74
因為那些祭物並不能除去出於心靈的污穢,仍不過是關乎肉身的;
For the sacrifices did not put away the filth that is from the soul, but were still concerned with the body;
15:75
'For according to the law of a carnal commandment,' he says.
15:76
For indeed they could not put away adultery, nor murder, nor sacrilege.
15:77
Do you see—'Eat this, do not eat that'? Which are matters of indifference.
15:78
Only in meats and drinks and divers washings.
15:79
其實關於飲料並沒有甚麼吩咐;
And yet concerning drink nothing had been ordained;
15:80
but making light of these things, he spoke thus:
15:81
And divers washings, and ordinances of the flesh, imposed until a time of reformation.
15:82
For this is the righteousness of the flesh.
15:83
在此他推翻了那些祭物,顯明它們毫無效力,也顯明它們只存到那改正的時候;
Here he overthrows the sacrifices, showing that they had no power, and that they were until a time of reformation;
15:84
that is, they awaited the time that should set all things right.
15:85
But Christ having come, a high priest of the good things to come, through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands.
15:86
他說「更大」又說「更全備」,實在恰當,既然神的道並聖靈全部的運行都住在其中;
And well did he say both 'greater' and 'more perfect,' seeing that God the Word, and the whole operation of the Spirit, dwells in it;
15:87
for 'God gives not the Spirit by measure.'
15:88
Or he calls it 'more perfect' inasmuch as it is also incomprehensible, and accomplishes greater things.
15:89
That is, not of this creation.
15:90
For it would not have been of the Spirit if a man had prepared it.
15:91
他說:「不屬乎這受造之物」;這就是說,不屬乎這些受造之物,乃是屬乎那屬靈的;
'Not of this creation,' he says; that is, not of these created things, but of a spiritual one;
15:92
for it was prepared of the Holy Spirit.
15:93
你看見他怎樣把身體既稱為帳幕,又稱為幔子,也稱為天嗎?他說:「經過那更大更全備的帳幕」;
Do you see how he calls the body both a tabernacle and a veil and heaven? 'Through the greater and more perfect tabernacle,' he says;
15:94
接著又說:「經過那幔子」,就是祂的肉體;
then, 'Through the veil,' that is, of His flesh;
15:95
又說:「進到幔內」;
and again, 'Into that within the veil';
15:96
Entering into the Holy of Holies, to appear before the face of God.
15:97
For what reason, then, does he do this? Because he wishes to teach us that, under one signification after another, it is the same Word.
15:98
我的意思是這樣:那幔子就是天;
What I mean is this: the veil is heaven;
15:99
因為正如幔子把聖所隔開,肉體也照樣遮掩了那神性;
for just as the veil walls off the holy places, so also the flesh conceals the Godhead;
15:100
照樣,那有神性居於其中的肉體也是一個帳幕;
And in like manner the flesh is a tabernacle, having the Godhead within it;
15:101
再者,天也是一個帳幕;
and again, heaven too is a tabernacle;
15:102
for there within is the Priest.
15:103
'But Christ,' he says, 'being come a High Priest.'
15:104
他沒有說「成為」,而是說「來到」,就是說,祂正是為著這個目的而來,並非接續別人的職任;
He did not say 'having become,' but 'being come'—that is, having come for this very purpose, not having succeeded another in office;
15:105
He did not first come and then become, but at the same moment He came.
15:106
他也沒有說「作了那些被獻之物的大祭司」,而是說「作了那將來美事的大祭司」;
And he did not say, 'Being come a High Priest of things that are sacrificed,' but 'of the good things to come;'
15:107
as though language were not strong enough to set forth the whole.
15:108
'Nor yet by the blood,' he says, 'of goats and calves.'
15:109
All things are changed: 'but by His own blood,' he says, 'He entered in once for all into the holy places.'
15:110
Behold, it is heaven that he here called this.
15:111
'Once for all,' he says, 'He entered into the holy places, having obtained eternal redemption.'
15:112
And the word 'having obtained' belongs very much to things beyond hope and beyond expectation—how by a single entrance He obtained eternal redemption.
15:113
'For if the blood of bulls and of goats, and the ashes of a heifer sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies unto the cleanness of the flesh,'
15:114
'how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without blemish unto God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?' For if, he says, the blood of bulls can cleanse the flesh, much more shall the blood of Christ wipe away the defilement of the soul.
15:115
免得你聽見「叫人成聖」,就以為那是何等大的事,所以他特意指明,顯出兩種潔淨之間的分別,並顯明這一種是崇高的,那一種是卑下的;
For lest, hearing 'sanctifies,' you should think it something great, he points it out and shows the difference between the two purifications, and how the one is lofty, the other lowly;
15:116
and he says that this is with good reason, seeing that the one was the blood of bulls, but the other the blood of Christ.
15:117
他不以名稱為滿足,還進一步說明那獻上的方式;
And he was not content with the name, but sets forth also the manner of the offering;
15:118
'Who through the eternal Spirit,' he says, 'offered Himself without blemish unto God;'
15:119
that is, the victim was without blemish, pure from sins.
15:120
And the phrase 'through the eternal Spirit' shows that He was offered not through fire, nor through any other such means.
15:121
'He shall cleanse your conscience,' he says, 'from dead works.'
15:122
他說「除去死行」,說得真好;
And well did he say, 'from dead works;'
15:123
因為在那些日子,若有人摸了死屍,就沾了污穢;
for if anyone in those days touched a dead body, he was defiled;
15:124
and here too, if anyone touch a dead work, he is defiled through his conscience.
15:125
'To serve the living God,' he says, 'and true.'
15:126
Here he intimates that it is not possible for one who has dead works to serve the living God.
15:127
And he said 'true and living God' with good reason, showing thereby that the things offered to Him are also of this kind.
15:128
因此,我們這裡的這些事物,都是又活又真的;
So that these things which are with us are both living and true;
15:129
but those among the Jews are both dead and false.
15:130
Let no one therefore who has dead works enter in here.
15:131
因為那摸了死屍的人尚且不可進入,何況那有死行的人;
For if he that touched a dead body might not enter in, much more he that has dead works;
15:132
for it is a most grievous defilement.
15:133
And dead works are all those that have no life in them, that breathe out a foul stench.
15:134
正如死屍對任何感官都沒有用處,反倒叫親近它的人厭惡;
For just as a dead body is useful for no purpose of sense, but even grieves those who come near it;
15:135
so also sin straightway smites the reasoning faculty, and does not suffer even the mind itself to be at rest, but troubles and confounds it.
15:136
And it is said that a plague, when it is engendered, destroys bodies.
15:137
罪也是這樣;
Such also is sin;
15:138
it differs in nothing from a plague—not first corrupting the air and then the bodies, but leaping straightway into the soul.
15:139
Do you not see how the plague-stricken are inflamed, how they writhe about, how they are filled with foul stench, how loathsome are their countenances, how wholly unclean they are? Such also are those who sin, even though they do not see it.
15:140
你且告訴我,那被貪愛錢財或貪愛肉體之慾所擄的人,豈不比任何發燒的人更壞麼?他豈不比這一切人更污穢,既作又受一切無恥的事麼?還有甚麼比貪戀錢財的人更可恥的呢?凡娼妓所行的、凡戲臺上的婦人所不推辭去作的,這人連那些都不推辭;
For tell me, is not the man who is taken captive by the lust of money, or of bodies, worse than any who is in a fever? Is he not more unclean than all these, both doing and suffering all shameless things? For what is more shameful than a man who is in love with money? All that harlot women, all that women on the stage do not refuse to do, not even so much does this man refuse;
15:141
nay rather, it is likely that those women would sooner refuse than he.
15:142
我何必說他不推辭呢?他甚至甘心作奴僕般卑賤的事,向不當諂媚的人諂媚,又在不當放肆的地方放肆,處處反覆無常;
Why do I say he does not refuse? He even submits to slavish deeds, flattering those whom he ought not, and again waxing bold where he ought not, everywhere inconsistent;
15:143
he sits fawning upon wicked men and impostors, often utterly corrupt, far poorer and meaner than himself, while he insults and behaves insolently toward others who are good and in every way virtuous.
15:144
Do you see on both sides the unseemliness, the shamelessness? He is both lowly beyond measure, and a boaster.
15:145
But the harlots stand upon a stall, and this is their reproach,
15:146
就是她們為著錢財出賣身體;
that they sell the body for money's sake;
15:147
然而她們還有些可辯之處,就是她們的貧窮和逼迫她們的饑餓;
yet they have some defense, their poverty and the hunger that constrains them;
15:148
縱然如此,這也絕不足以成為充分的辯解;
although at the utmost not even this is a sufficient defense;
15:149
for it was in their power to support themselves by working.
15:150
但那貪婪的人卻站在這裡,不是站在娼寮裡,乃是站在全城的中央,把他所出賣的不是身體,而是魂交給魔鬼,以致他與魔鬼結合,真如同進到娼妓那裡一般,滿足了自己一切的私慾才出來;
But here stands the covetous man, not upon a stall, but in the very midst of the city, betraying to the devil not his body but his soul, so that he consorts with him and goes in to him as verily to a harlot, and comes forth having fulfilled all his lust;
15:151
and the whole city sees, not two men and three.
15:152
這也是娼妓所特有的,就是誰給金子,她們就屬於誰;
And this too is peculiar to harlots, that they belong to him who gives the gold;
15:153
無論那人是奴僕、是自由的、是鬥士、或是任何人,只要他拿出工價,她們就接納他;
for whether he be a slave, or free, or a gladiator, or whosoever he may be, if only he offers the wage, they accept him;
15:154
but those who offer nothing, even though they be nobler than all, without the silver they do not admit.
15:155
這些人在這裡也照樣行;
This same thing these men also do here;
15:156
那正直的思慮,既然沒有銀子,他們就掉頭不顧;
the upright reasonings, when these have no silver, they turn away from;
15:157
but with the vile and truly beast-fighting ones they consort for the gold's sake, and consort shamefully, and destroy the beauty of the soul.
15:158
正如那些婦人生來就相貌醜陋、黝黑、粗俗、臃腫、無形無狀、體態畸形、各方面都醜惡;
For just as those women are by nature ill-favored, and swarthy, and coarse, and gross, and shapeless, and misshapen, and in every way foul;
15:159
so also do the souls of these men become, unable even with outward paints to hide their deformity.
15:160
For when the ugliness is extreme, whatever devices they contrive, they cannot even feign a fair appearance.
15:161
That shamelessness makes harlots, hear the prophet saying:
15:162
'Thou wast shameless toward all; thou hadst a harlot's face.'
15:163
This too may be said to the covetous: thou wast shameless toward all—not toward these and those, but toward all.
15:164
How? Such a man reverences neither father, nor son, nor wife, nor friend, nor brother, nor benefactor, nor anyone at all.
15:165
And why do I speak of friend and brother and father? He reverences not God Himself, but everything seems to him a fable, and he laughs, drunken with his excessive lust, and does not receive even by hearing any of the things that might profit him.
15:166
But—O the absurdity!—what things they utter:
15:167
'Woe to thee, Mammon, and to him that has thee not!'
15:168
聽到這話,我就被怒氣如刀割裂;
At this I am cut asunder with indignation;
15:169
for woe to those who say such things, even if they say them in jest.
15:170
For tell me, did not God utter just such a threat when He said:
15:171
'You cannot serve two masters'? Yet you make light of the threat, daring to utter such things to your own hurt. Does not Paul call this very thing idolatry, and name the covetous man an idolater? Yet you stand there laughing after the manner of worldly women, playing the buffoon like those upon the stage? IV.
15:172
This has overturned everything; this has cast all down.
15:173
我們的事已淪為笑柄、交際的客套與俏皮話;
Our affairs have become a matter of jesting, of mere social politeness and wit;
15:174
there is nothing steadfast, nothing solid.
15:175
我說這些話不單是對屬世的人說的;我也知道我所暗指的是誰;
I do not say these things to worldly men only; but I know at whom I am hinting;
15:176
for the Church has become filled with laughter.
15:177
若有人說句俏皮話,坐著的人中間立刻就發笑;
If some one make a witty remark, immediately there is laughter among those who are seated;
15:178
and the marvel is that many do not cease from laughing even at the very time of prayer.
15:179
魔鬼到處領著舞蹈,牠已披戴在眾人身上,牠轄制眾人;
Everywhere the devil leads the dance; he has clothed himself upon all, he holds sway over all;
15:180
Christ is dishonored, thrust aside; the Church counts for nothing.
15:181
Do you not hear Paul saying:
15:182
「淫穢的話、愚妄的話、和戲笑的話,都要從你們中間除掉」麼﹖他把戲笑與淫穢並列;
'Let filthiness and foolish talking and jesting be put away from you'? Together with filthiness he sets down jesting;
15:183
yet you laugh? What is foolish talking? Things that have nothing useful about them.
15:184
And do you laugh at all, and relax your countenance, you who are a monk? you who are crucified, who mourn? do you laugh, tell me? Where did you hear that Christ did this? Nowhere; but rather often that He was of a downcast look.
15:185
For indeed when He beheld Jerusalem, He wept; and when He thought upon the traitor, He was troubled; and when He was about to raise Lazarus, He wept.
15:186
yet you laugh? If he who does not grieve over the sins of others is worthy of accusation;
15:187
那對自己的罪毫無知覺、反而發笑的人,還配得甚麼寬恕呢﹖如今這時候乃是哀慟與患難的時候,是攻克己身、叫身服我的時候,是爭戰與汗流的時候;
he who is unfeeling toward his own sins and laughs, of what pardon shall he be worthy? The present is a time of mourning and of affliction, of buffeting and of bringing into bondage, of struggles and of sweat;
15:188
yet you laugh? Do you not see how Sarah was rebuked? do you not hear Christ saying:
15:189
'Woe to you that laugh, for you shall weep'? These things you chant every day.
15:190
For what do you say, tell me? that
15:191
but what? 'I am weary with my groaning.'
15:192
But perhaps there are some so dissolute and slack that they laugh even at this rebuke, because forsooth we are discoursing about laughter.
15:193
For such is their derangement, such their madness, that they do not even perceive the rebuke.
15:194
神的祭司站著獻上眾人的禱告;
The priest of God stands offering up the prayer of all;
15:195
yet you laugh, fearing nothing? And while he trembles as he offers up the prayers on your behalf, do you despise it? Do you not hear the Scripture saying:
15:196
「藐視的人有禍了」麼﹖你不戰慄麼﹖你不收斂自己麼﹖你進入王宮的時候,在儀容、眼神、步態並一切事上都端整自己;
'Woe to the despisers'? Do you not shudder? do you not compose yourself? And when you enter into palaces, you order yourself decorously in fashion, in look, in gait, and in all else;
15:197
在這裏,就是那真正的王宮,是像天上一樣的所在,你倒發笑麼﹖我固然知道你看不見;
but here, where are the true palaces, and things such as those of heaven, do you laugh? I know indeed that you do not see;
15:198
but hear that angels are present everywhere, and especially in the house of God they stand beside the King, and all is filled with those bodiless powers.
15:199
我這話也是對婦女說的,她們在丈夫面前實在不敢輕易如此行,就是行,也不是常常,乃是在鬆懈安逸的時候;
This word of mine is addressed also to the women, who indeed do not readily dare to do this in the presence of their husbands, and even if they do, not always, but only at a time of relaxation;
15:200
Do you cover your head, tell me, and yet laugh, O woman, sitting in church? You came in to confess your sins, to fall down before God, to entreat and supplicate for the offenses you have grievously committed, and do you do this with laughter? How then shall you be able to propitiate Him? 'And what harm is there in laughter?' one says. Laughter is not an evil, but the evil is what is beyond measure, what is out of season.
15:201
Laughter is implanted in us, that when we see friends after a long time, we may do this; that when we see some who are dismayed and fearful, we may relieve them by a smile; not that we should burst into loud laughter and be always laughing.
15:202
Laughter is implanted in our soul, that the soul may sometimes be relaxed, not that it may be dissolved.
15:203
既然情慾也安置在我們裏面,然而斷不是因為它被安置了,就必須運用它,或無節制地運用它;
Since there is implanted in us also a desire for bodies, and yet it is by no means necessary, because it is implanted, to make use of it, or to use it without measure;
15:204
but we even master it, and do not say, Since it is implanted, let us make use of it.
15:205
Serve God with tears, that you may be able to wash away your sins.
15:206
I know that many mock at us, saying, Tears at once!
15:207
我也知道那些說「讓我們喫喝罷」的人,把流淚看為不祥之兆;
I know too that they take it for an ill omen, those who say, Let us eat and drink;
15:208
但你當思想「虛空的虛空,凡事都是虛空」;
But consider that 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity';
15:209
說這話的不是我,乃是那親身經歷過萬事的人如此說;
it is not I who say it, but he who made trial of all things says this;
15:210
'I built me houses, I planted me vineyards, I made me pools of water, I got me cupbearers, both men and women;'
15:211
and what then does he say after all these things? 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity.'
15:212
所以親愛的,讓我們哀慟,讓我們哀慟,使我們能真正歡笑,使我們能在那純淨喜樂的時候真正歡欣;
Let us therefore mourn, beloved, let us mourn, that we may truly laugh, that we may truly rejoice in the time of pure joy;
15:213
因為這種喜樂全然攙雜著憂愁,永遠不能尋見它是純淨的;
for this joy is altogether mingled with sorrow, and it is never possible to find it pure;
15:214
惟那另一種喜樂是純淨無偽的,毫無虛假,也毫無攙雜;
but that other joy is pure and guileless, having nothing hollow nor anything mixed with it;
15:215
let us rejoice in that joy, let us pursue after that.
15:216
And it is not possible to attain it otherwise than by choosing here not the pleasant things but the profitable, and by being willingly a little afflicted, and by bearing all that befalls with thanksgiving.
15:217
For thus shall we be able also to attain the kingdom of heaven, by the grace and lovingkindness, and so forth.
