By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac; and he that had received the promises offered up his only-begotten son—he to whom it was said, 'In Isaac shall thy seed be called.'
25:2
他算定神甚至能叫人從死裡復活;
For he reasoned that God was able to raise him up even from the dead;
25:3
whence also he received him back in a figure.
25:4
Truly great was the faith of Abraham.
25:5
因為在亞伯、挪亞和以諾的事上,不過是與理性思慮的爭戰而已,只需勝過人的推理;
For in the case of Abel and Noah and Enoch there was a battle of reasonings only, and it was necessary to overcome merely human calculations;
25:6
但在這裡,不僅要勝過人的推理,還要顯出更大的事來;
but here it was necessary not only to overcome human reasonings, but also to display something yet greater.
25:7
For the things of God seemed to fight against the things of God, and faith battled against faith, and command against promise.
25:8
「你要離開你的本地和你的親族,我要把這地賜給你」;
'Get thee out of thy land, and from thy kindred, and I will give thee this land';
25:9
and He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a foot of ground.
25:10
Do you see how the things that came to pass fought against the promise? Again He says:
25:11
「從以撒生的,才要稱為你的後裔」,他就信了;
'In Isaac shall thy seed be called,' and he believed;
25:12
'Sacrifice unto Me this one'—him who was to fill the whole world from his seed.
25:13
Do you see the battle of commands and promise? He commanded things contrary to the promises, and not even so was the righteous man dizzy with confusion, nor did he say that he had been deceived.
25:14
他說,因為你們絕不能這樣說,說神應許安逸,卻給了患難;
For you indeed, he says, cannot say this—that He promised ease and gave affliction;
25:15
for here the very things which He promised, these also He performs.
25:16
How so? 'In the world,' He says, 'ye shall have tribulation.'
25:17
'He that taketh not his cross and followeth Me is not worthy of Me.'
25:18
'He that hateth not his own life shall not find it;'
25:19
'Whosoever,' He says, 'renounceth not all that he hath, and followeth after Me, is not worthy of Me;'
25:20
'Before governors and kings.'
25:21
'A man's foes shall be they of his own household.'
25:22
And so much concerning affliction.
25:23
But in the case of Abraham it was the opposite:
25:24
他所受的吩咐,與那些應許相反,他卻仍不驚慌,不昏亂,也不以為自己受了欺哄;
he was commanded to do things contrary to the promises, and not even so was he troubled, nor dizzy, nor did he think that he had been deceived;
25:25
but you endure nothing beyond the promise, and yet you are troubled.
25:26
他從那位發出那些應許的同一位那裡,聽見與所應許相反的話,卻不驚慌,反倒像它們彼此相合般地去行;
He heard things contrary to what had been promised, from the very One who had made those promises, and yet he was not troubled, but acted as though they were in harmony;
25:27
因為它們實在是相合的——雖與人的推理相反,卻因著信而彼此相合;
for indeed they were in harmony—contrary to human reasonings, yet in harmony by reason of faith;
25:28
and how, the Apostle himself taught us, saying:
25:29
'Reasoning that God was able to raise up even from the dead.'
25:30
From the same faith, he says—the faith by which he believed that God would grant him a son who did not yet exist—from that same faith he was persuaded that God would raise up even the dead, and would raise up the one who had been slain.
25:31
因為這兩件事同樣是不可能的——我是指按人的推理說——就是從一個已死、已衰老、對生育已然無用的胎中賜下嬰孩,以及叫那被殺獻祭的復活;
For it was equally impossible—I mean by human reasoning—both to give a child from a dead and aged womb that had already become useless for childbearing, and to raise up one that had been slain;
25:32
for the faith that had gone before paved the way for what was to come.
25:33
Moreover, he saw the good things first, and the difficult things later, in his old age.
25:34
But you, on the contrary, he says, have the sorrowful things first, and the good things last.
25:35
This is against those who dare to say, 'He promised us the good things after death; perhaps He has deceived us.'
25:36
他指明神甚至能叫人從死裡復活;
He shows that God is able to raise up even from the dead;
25:37
and if God is able to raise up even from the dead, then assuredly He will render all things.
25:38
But if Abraham believed, so many years before, that God was able to raise up from the dead, much more ought we to believe.
25:39
Do you see that, as I said before, death had not yet entered, and yet at once He drew them to the hope of the resurrection, and led them to such full assurance, that even when commanded to slay their own sons, and to bring forward for sacrifice those from whom they expected to fill the whole world, they were ready to offer them? And here he shows another thing also, by saying, 'God tempted Abraham.'
25:40
What then? Did not God know that the man was noble and approved? Assuredly He did.
25:41
Why then did He try him, if He knew? Not that He Himself might learn, but that He might show it to others, and make his manliness manifest to all.
25:42
And here he shows also the cause of temptations, lest men should think that they suffer these things as being forsaken.
25:43
因為在這裡,受試探甚至是必然的事,原因是有許多逼迫我們、算計我們的人;
For here it is even a matter of necessity to be tempted, because there are many that drive us on and that plot against us;
25:44
but there, what necessity was there to devise temptations for him that had none? This temptation, then, was clearly one that came about by His command.
25:45
The other trials came to pass by His permission, but this one by His actual command.
25:46
神既藉著試探的種種遭遇造就出這樣經得起考驗的人,甚至在沒有緣故的時候,也操練祂自己的鬥士;
If then He makes the events of temptations produce men so approved, that even when there is no cause God exercises His own athletes;
25:47
much more ought we to bear all things nobly.
25:48
他在這裡著重地說:「他被試驗的時候,因著信把以撒獻上」;
And emphatically he said here that 'By faith he offered up Isaac, when he was tried';
25:49
for there was no other cause of the offering but this.
25:50
Then he goes on to develop the thought.
25:51
He cannot say, he means, that Abraham had another son also, and expected the promise to be fulfilled through that one, and therefore, being confident, offered this one.
25:52
'And he that had received the promises,' he says, 'offered up his only-begotten son.'
25:53
你說「獨生子」是甚麼意思?那麼以實瑪利呢?他是從哪裡來的?他的意思是,我所說的「獨生子」,是就應許的話而言的;
What do you mean, 'only-begotten'? What then of Ishmael? Whence was he? I say 'only-begotten,' he means, as far as the word of the promise is concerned;
25:54
正因如此他才加上「獨生子」這話,指明他是為著這一位才這樣說的;
for it was on this account that he added, saying 'only-begotten,' showing that it is on account of this one that he so speaks;
25:55
'to whom it was said, In Isaac shall thy seed be called'—that is, from him.
25:56
Do you see how he marvels at what was done by the patriarch? 'In Isaac,' he heard, 'shall thy seed be called,' and yet he was offering his son as a victim.
25:57
然後,免得有人以為他是出於絕望才這樣行,並以為他藉這吩咐把從前的信丟棄了,反倒要人明白這也實在是出於信,他就說,亞伯拉罕連那從前的信也仍持守著,雖然那信似乎與此相爭;
Then, lest anyone should think that he did this in despair, and that by this command he cast out that former faith, but that one might learn that this also was truly of faith, he says that he held that faith as well, even though it seemed to conflict with this;
25:58
for he did not measure the power of God by human reasonings, but committed all things to faith.
25:59
Wherefore he did not even fear to say that
25:60
Καὶ ἐκ νε.
'God is able to raise up even from the dead.'
25:61
'Whence also he received him back in a figure'—that is, in a type, in the ram, he says.
25:62
怎麼說呢?因為那公羊被殺獻祭,這位以撒就得救了;
How so? For when the ram was slain, this one was saved;
25:63
so that he received him back by means of the ram, having slain that one in his stead.
25:64
Now these things were certain types.
25:65
For here it is the Son of God who is offered up in sacrifice.
25:66
And consider with me His loving-kindness, how great it was.
25:67
For since a great grace was about to be given to men, and He willed not to bestow it as a mere favour but as though He were a debtor, He first prepared a man to give up his own son on behalf of God's command, so that He might not seem to be doing anything great in giving up His own Son, seeing that a man had done this very thing before Him; that so it might be reckoned that He did this not out of grace only, but even as of a debt.
25:68
For those whom we love, this too we wish to grant them: that we should seem to have first received some small thing from them, and so to give them everything.
25:69
And we boast rather in the receiving than in the giving, and we do not say, 'This we gave to him,' but 'This we received from him.'
25:70
Wherefore, he says, He received him also in a parable—that is, as in a riddle.
25:71
正如以撒的那隻公羊乃是一個比喻;
For just as the ram of Isaac was a parable;
25:72
since the sacrifice had been completed and Isaac had been slain in intention, therefore He grants him back to the patriarch.
25:73
Do you see that what I am always saying is shown even now? For whenever we present our mind as perfected, and show that we despise earthly things, then He grants us the earthly things also; but not before, lest by the receiving He should bind us the more, who are still attached to them.
25:74
祂說:「你要先解脫自己脫離奴役,然後才領受,使你不再像奴僕那樣領受,倒像主人那樣領受;
'Loose yourself first,' He says, 'from slavery, and then receive, that you may no longer receive as a slave, but as a master;
25:75
輕看財富,你就必富足;
despise riches, and you shall be rich;
25:76
輕看榮耀,你就必得榮耀;
despise glory, and you shall be glorious;
25:77
輕看向仇敵報復,那時你就必得著它;
despise vengeance upon your enemies, and then you shall attain it;
25:78
輕看安逸,那時你就必得著它;
despise ease, and then you shall receive it;
25:79
that when you receive, you may not receive as a captive, nor as a slave, but as one who is free.'
25:80
正如在小孩子的事上,每逢孩子貪愛孩童的玩物,我們就殷勤地把那些東西藏起來,如球和諸如此類的玩具,免得他在必需的事上受了攔阻;
For just as in the case of little children, whenever the child desires childish toys, we hide those things with much diligence—such as a ball and all such playthings—that it may not be hindered from the things that are necessary;
25:81
但每逢他輕看了這些,不再貪愛的時候,我們就毫無顧忌地把它們給他,知道從此對他再無甚麼損害,因為那貪慾已不再有力量把他從必需的事上引開;
but whenever he despises them and no longer desires them, we give them to him without fear, knowing that no harm henceforth comes to him from this, since that desire has no longer any power to draw him away from the things that are necessary;
25:82
神也是如此,每逢祂看見我們不再貪愛此處的事物,就此後准許我們享用它們;
so also God, whenever He sees us no longer desiring the things here below, thereafter permits us to use them;
25:83
for we possess them as free men and grown men, not as children.
25:84
For that if you despise vengeance upon your enemies, then you shall attain it, hear what He says:
25:85
「你的仇敵若餓了,就給他吃;
'If your enemy hunger, feed him;
25:86
for in doing this, you shall heap coals of fire upon his head.'
25:87
And again, that if you despise wealth, then you shall attain it, hear Christ saying:
25:88
'There is no one who has left father, or mother, or house, or brethren, who shall not receive a hundredfold, and shall inherit eternal life.'
25:89
And that if you despise glory, then you shall attain it, hear Christ again saying:
25:90
「你們中間誰願為首,就必作你們的僕役;
'Whoever wishes to be first among you, let him be your servant;
25:91
and again, 'For whoever humbles himself, this one shall be exalted.'
25:92
你說甚麼?我若給仇敵喝,那時就是刑罰他麼?我若撇下所有的產業,那時就是擁有它們麼?我若謙卑自己,那時就要升為高麼?祂說:是的;
What do you say? If I give my enemy to drink, then do I punish him? If I let go my possessions, then do I have them? If I humble myself, then shall I be exalted? Yes, He says;
25:93
因為我的能力正是如此,藉著相反的事物成就相反的結果。我富有資源,滿有巧計,你不要懼怕;
for such is My power: through opposites it furnishes opposites. I am resourceful and full of contrivance; do not be afraid;
25:94
萬事萬物的性質乃是隨從我的旨意,我卻不隨從其性質;
the nature of things follows My will; I do not follow nature;
25:95
我運行萬事,不是我被它們牽引;
I work all things; I am not led by them;
25:96
wherefore I am able also to remould them and to refashion them.
25:97
And why do you marvel if such a thing happens in these matters? For you shall find the same in all other things as well.
25:98
因為你若行了不義,你就是被虧負了;
For if you do wrong, you have been wronged;
25:99
你若被虧負,那時你倒沒有被虧負;
if you are wronged, then you have not been wronged;
25:100
if you take revenge, then you have not avenged yourself, but have wronged yourself.
25:101
For 'he who loves unrighteousness,' it says, 'hates his own soul.'
25:102
Do you see that you do not wrong others, but have been wronged? For this reason Paul also says:
25:103
'Why do you not rather suffer wrong?' You saw that this is not
25:104
to be wronged? Whenever you insult another, then you have been insulted.
25:105
這事眾人也略略知道;
And this the many know in part;
25:106
as when they say to one another, 'Let us go away from here, do not insult yourself.'
25:107
為甚麼?因為你和他之間的差距甚遠;
Why? Because great is the distance between you and him;
25:108
for however much you insult him, that one counts it as glory.
25:109
願我們在凡事上都思想這道理,就必超越一切的侮辱;
Let us consider this in all cases, and we become higher than insults;
25:110
我們若與那身穿紫袍的人爭鬥,我們侮辱他,就以為是侮辱了自己;
if we have a quarrel with the very man who wears the purple, in insulting him we consider that we insult ourselves;
25:111
for in befouling him, we too become worthy of being befouled.
25:112
What do you say, tell me? Being a citizen of the heavens, and possessing the philosophy above, do you befoul yourself along with him who minds earthly things? For though he possess ten thousand riches, though he be in power, he does not yet know your beauty.
25:113
不要因侮辱他而侮辱了自己;
Do not insult yourself in insulting him;
25:114
要顧惜自己,不是顧惜他;
spare yourself, not him;
25:115
honour yourself, not him.
25:116
豈不是有這樣一句諺語:「尊重人的,就是尊重自己」麼?這是有道理的;
Is there not such a proverb, 'He who honours, honours himself'? And rightly so;
25:117
for he honours not that one, but himself.
25:118
Hear a certain wise man saying:
25:119
'Give honour to your soul according to its worth.'
25:120
「按其價值」是甚麼意思?他說,別人若佔了你的便宜,你不可回頭去佔便宜;
What is 'according to its worth'? If another has taken advantage of you, he says, do not you take advantage in return;
25:121
Tell me, I beg you, if some poor man took mud thrown out from your courtyard, would you set up a court of law against him for this? By no means.
25:122
Why? That you may not insult yourself, that all may not condemn you.
25:123
For the rich man is poor, and the more he is rich, the more he becomes poor with true poverty.
25:124
金子不過是爛泥,拋在院子裡,並不是安放在你家中;
Mud is gold, thrown out in a courtyard, not lying in your house;
25:125
for your house is heaven.
25:126
Will you then set up a court of law over this, and will not the citizens above condemn you? Will they not cast you out of their own fatherland—you who are so lowly, so worthless, as to choose to fight over a little mud? For if the world were yours, and then someone took it, you ought to turn away from it.
25:127
你豈不知道,縱使你把全地擺上十倍、百倍、萬倍,再加倍那麼多,也還不及諸天上美善之物的極小一分麼?所以那羨慕此處事物的人,乃是侮辱了那上面的事物,既然他把這些遠遠不及那些的事物,看為值得熱心追求的;
Do you not know that even if you set the whole inhabited world ten times over, and a hundred times, and ten thousand times, and twice as much again, it is not equal even to the smallest part of the good things in the heavens? He therefore who admires the things here, has insulted those things above, seeing that he counts these worthy of zeal, which fall so far short of those;
25:128
不如說,他甚至不能羨慕那些事物;
or rather, he will not even be able to admire those things;
25:129
他既被這些事物所迷住,又怎能羨慕那些呢?所以我懇求你們,我們總要遲遲地將這些繩索與纏繞的鏈子斬斷;
for how can he, being enthralled to these? Let us then at length, I beseech you, cut through the ropes and the entangling cords;
25:130
for such are earthly matters.
25:131
我們要低頭俯視地面到幾時呢?我們要彼此謀害到幾時呢,如同野獸,如同魚類?不如說,野獸並不謀害同類,只謀害異類;
How long shall we bend downwards? How long shall we plot against one another, like the wild beasts, like the fishes? Or rather, the wild beasts do not plot against their own kind, but against those of another kind;
25:132
例如,熊不輕易殺熊,蛇也不殺蛇,因牠尊重同類;
for instance, a bear does not readily destroy a bear, nor does a serpent destroy a serpent, having reverence for its own kind;
25:133
but you, though sharing the same kind and possessing ten thousand claims of right—kinship, reason, the knowledge of God, the strength of nature, and ten thousand other things besides—you destroy your kinsman, who shares in the same nature, and encompass him with ten thousand evils.
25:134
For what does it matter that you do not thrust in the sword, nor plunge it into his right side? You do things more grievous than this, encompassing him with unending sorrows.
25:135
因為你若行了那事,倒是使他脫離了憂慮;
For had you done that deed, you would have released him from care;
25:136
but now you encompass him with famine and slavery, with fits of despair and many other sins.
25:137
These things I say, and in saying them I will not cease; not that I am preparing you to become murderers, nor exhorting you to come to this deed as though it were a lesser evil than that, but that you may not be over-confident, as if you were not going to render an account.
25:138
For he says, 'He who takes away his neighbour's livelihood and bread murders him.'
25:139
我懇求你們,讓我們終於約束自己的手罷,讓我們約束它們;
Let us at last restrain our hands within ourselves, I beseech you, let us restrain them;
25:140
或者說,我們不要約束它們,倒要正當地伸出它們來,不是為著貪婪,乃是為著施捨;
or rather, let us not restrain them, but stretch them out rightly, not toward greed, but toward almsgiving;
25:141
不要使我們的手不結果子,也不要枯乾;
let us not have the hand barren, nor withered;
25:142
因為不行施捨的手是枯乾的;
for the hand that does not do almsgiving is withered;
25:143
but the one that is also grasping is defiled and unclean.
25:144
不要有人用這樣的手吃飯;
Let no one eat with such hands;
25:145
for this is an insult to those who are invited.
25:146
For tell me: if someone, having laid us down upon carpets and a soft couch and gold-embroidered linens in a bright and spacious house, and having set beside us a great multitude of attendants, and then having prepared a platter of silver and gold, and having filled it with many viands
25:147
貴重而各樣的菜餚,強要我們吃;
costly and of every kind, and compelled us to eat;
25:148
if only we would endure him smearing his hands with filth, or even with human dung, and so reclining beside us — would anyone endure this punishment, and would he not rather reckon the thing an insult? For my part I think so, and would straightway spring away.
25:149
如今你所看見的,被真正污穢所充滿的,不僅是那手,連菜餚本身也是,你卻不跳開,不逃避,不責備;
But now you behold, filled with filth that is filth indeed, not only the hands, but the very dishes themselves, and you do not spring away, you do not flee, you do not rebuke;
25:150
but if the man be in power, you even count the thing a great matter, and you destroy your own soul by feeding on such food.
25:151
因為貪婪比任何污穢更壞;
For greed is worse than any filth;
25:152
for it defiles the soul, not the body, and makes it hard to wash clean.
25:153
所以你既看見那躺臥之人被這污穢所染,連他的手和臉都是,那屋子也充滿了它,那筵席也充滿了它(因為那些菜餚比糞穢,比任何更壞之物,更為不潔更為污穢),你卻自以為受了尊榮,好像將要奢華宴樂似的;你甚至不懼怕保羅,他若我們願意,就容我們毫無攔阻地赴外邦人的筵席,卻連我們願意,也不許我們赴貪婪之人的筵席麼?因為他說:「若有稱為弟兄的,是行淫的」;
You, therefore, seeing him who reclines dyed with this filth, both his hands and his face, and the house filled with it, and the table too filled with it (for those viands are more unclean and more defiled than dung, and than whatever is worse than that), yet you are disposed as though you had been honoured, and as though you were about to feast luxuriously; and you do not even fear Paul, who, if we should wish, permits us to go unhindered to the table of the Greeks, but does not allow us to go to the tables of the greedy even if we wish? 'For if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator,' he says;
25:154
here by 'brother' he means simply every believer, not the one who lives as a monk.
25:155
For what is it that makes the brotherhood? The washing of regeneration, the being able to call God Father.
25:156
所以那受洗前的慕道者,即使是修道人,也不是弟兄;
So that the catechumen, even if he be a monk, is not a brother;
25:157
but the believer, even if he be a man of the world, is a brother.
25:158
'If any one,' he says, 'that is called a brother.'
25:159
For at that time there was not even a trace of the monastic life, but this blessed man was addressing himself entirely to men of the world.
25:160
'If any one,' he says, 'that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or a drunkard, with such a one not even to eat.'
25:161
But concerning the Greeks it is not so, but what? 'If any of the unbelievers invite you' — meaning the Greeks — 'and you are disposed to go, eat whatever is set before you.'
25:162
'But if any one that is called a brother,' he says, 'be a drunkard' —
25:163
yet we not only do not flee the drunkards, but even go off to them, to partake of what is theirs.
25:164
For this reason all things have been turned upside down, all things have been confounded and overthrown and brought to ruin.
25:165
For tell me: if one of such men should invite you — you the poor man, reckoned of no account — to a prepared banquet, and then should hear from you that, since the things set before him come from greed, you will not consent to defile your own soul, would he not be ashamed? Would he not be abashed? Would he not be put to confusion? This alone would have been enough to set him right, and to make him count himself wretched over his wealth, but to marvel at you over your poverty, if indeed he saw himself despised by you with so great earnestness.
25:166
但我們不知怎的竟成了人的奴僕,儘管保羅反覆再三地大聲疾呼;
But we have become slaves of men, I know not how, though Paul cries out again and again, up and down;
25:167
'Do not become slaves of men.'
25:168
那麼我們是從何處成了人的奴僕呢?因為我們先前作了肚腹、錢財、虛榮並一切其他事物的奴僕;
Whence, then, have we become slaves of men? Because we first became slaves of the belly and of money and of glory and of all the rest;
25:169
we betrayed the freedom that Christ bestowed upon us.
25:170
那麼,請你告訴我,那成了奴僕之人,有甚麼在等著他呢?你且聽基督所說的;
What, then, awaits him who has become a slave, tell me? Hear Christ saying;
25:171
'The slave does not abide in the house for ever.'
25:172
你有了一個確定無疑的判決,就是他永不得進入國度;
You have an absolute sentence, that he never enters into the kingdom;
25:173
'For in the house of my Father,' he says, 'are many mansions.'
25:174
所以那奴僕不能永遠住在家裡;
The slave, then, does not abide in the house for ever;
25:175
祂所說的「奴僕」,乃是指那罪的奴僕;
by 'slave' he means that slave, the slave of sin;
25:176
and he who does not abide in the house for ever, abides in Gehenna for ever, having comfort from no quarter.
25:177
But indeed matters have come to such a pitch of wickedness, that men even do alms out of these gains, and receive many.
25:178
For this reason our boldness of speech has been cut off, and we cannot even rebuke anyone.
25:179
然而,至少讓我們從今以後逃避那由此而來的損害;
But nevertheless, let us at least from now on flee the harm that comes from this;
25:180
你們這些翻攪這污穢的人哪,要停止這樣的敗壞,並抑制你們赴這類筵席的衝動,或者甚至如今我們還能得以使神息怒,並得著所應許的美善之物;
and you who unroll this filth, cease from such defilement, and check your eagerness at such banquets, if somehow even now we may be able to appease God, and to attain the good things that have been promised;
25:181
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and
25:182
loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour to the Father, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
