For when God had made the promise to Abraham, since He could swear by no one greater, He swore by Himself, saying:
11:2
'Surely blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.'
11:3
And thus, having been long-suffering, he obtained the promise.
11:4
men swear by the greater, and the oath is for confirmation, an end of all their strife.
11:5
Having laid hold of the Hebrews nobly, and sufficiently frightened them, he first comforts them with commendations, and secondly—which is even more forcible—with the assurance that they will assuredly obtain the things hoped for.
11:6
他發出勸勉,不是從現今的事,而是再次從過去的事;
And he draws his exhortation not from things present, but again from things past;
11:7
which indeed the more persuaded them.
11:8
因為正如在懲罰的事上,他更藉著那些例子使他們生畏,照樣在賞賜的事上,他也藉著這些使他們得著鼓勵,顯明神的常例;
For just as in the matter of punishment he frightens them the more by those examples, so also in the matter of the rewards he encourages them by these, showing the custom of God;
11:9
and this is, not to bring in speedily the things promised, but after a long time.
11:10
And He does this, both bringing forth the greatest proof of His own power, and leading us on to faith, that those who live in affliction, and receive neither the promises nor the rewards, may not lose heart amid their toils.
11:11
And passing over all the rest, although he had many whom he might mention, he brought Abraham into the midst, both because of the dignity of the person, and because this had especially befallen him.
11:12
And yet at the end of the epistle he says that all these, having seen the promises afar off and greeted them, did not receive the promises, that they should not be made perfect without us.
11:13
For when God had made His promise to Abraham, he says, since He had no one greater by whom to swear, He swore by Himself, saying:
11:14
'Surely, blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply you.'
11:15
And thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
11:16
How then does he say at the end that 'They did not receive the promises'?
11:17
ἐν.
But here he says that 'Having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.' How did he not receive it? And how did he also obtain it? He is not speaking of the same things here and there, but he makes a twofold encouragement.
11:18
有些事祂在今世過了長久的時間才賜下,另有些事在那裡卻尚未賜下;
Some things He gave here after a long time, but the others yonder He has not yet given;
11:19
and thus, having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
11:20
Do you see that it was not the promise alone which accomplished the whole, but also his patient endurance? Here he strikes fear into them, showing that often a promise is thwarted through faintheartedness.
11:21
這一點他藉著那百姓顯明出來;
And this he showed by means of the people;
11:22
因為他們既然小信灰心,就因此絲毫沒有得著所應許的;
for since they were fainthearted, on this account they in no way obtained the promise;
11:23
but the opposite he shows by means of Abraham.
11:24
接著,臨到末了,他更進一步;
Then, toward the end, he does something even more;
11:25
for he shows that even those who patiently endured did not obtain, and yet even so they are not vexed.
11:26
因為人都是指著比自己大的起誓,這誓言對他們就成了了結一切爭辯、使人確信的憑據;
For men swear by one greater than themselves, and the oath is for them an end of all dispute for confirmation;
11:27
but God, since He had no one greater by whom to swear, swore by Himself.
11:28
Who then is He that swore to Abraham? Was it not the Son? 'No,' someone says.
11:29
你憑什麼這樣說呢?因為那實在正是祂自己;
Whence do you say this? For most surely it was He Himself;
11:30
When therefore He Himself swears the very same oath, 'Amen, amen, I say unto you,' is it not plain that it is because He has no one greater by whom to swear? For as the Father swore, so also the Son swears by Himself, saying, 'Amen, amen, I say unto you.'
11:31
Here he reminds them of those oaths of Christ, which He continually spoke: 'Amen, amen, I say unto you, he that believes in Me shall never die unto eternity.'
11:32
「這誓言就成了了結他們一切爭辯、使人確信的憑據」,這是什麼意思呢?就是說:藉著這誓,一切爭辯的疑難都得以化解;
What does this mean: 'And the oath is for them an end of all dispute for confirmation'? It means: by this every wrangling of dispute is dissolved;
11:33
not of this or that dispute, but of every one.
11:34
God ought indeed to have been believed even without an oath.
11:35
'Wherein God,' he says, 'willing more abundantly to show unto the heirs of the promise the immutability of His counsel, interposed with an oath.'
11:36
在此他也把信徒包括進來;
Here he includes the faithful also;
11:37
for this reason he also mentions this promise, which was made in common toward us.
11:38
Again here he says that the Son became a mediator between men and God.
11:39
'That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie.'
11:40
Of what and of what? Of both the speaking and the promising, and of adding an oath to the promise.
11:41
For since among men this matter of the oath seems to be more trustworthy, on this account He added it too.
11:42
Do you see that He does not regard His own dignity, but how He may persuade men, and He endures things unworthy of Himself to be said concerning Himself? That is, wishing to give full assurance.
11:43
在亞伯拉罕的事上,他指明這一切都是出於神,並非出於那人的恆久忍耐,因為神甚至甘願加上誓言;
And in the case of Abraham he shows that the whole was of God, not of that man's patient endurance, seeing that He even endured to add an oath;
11:44
if, that is, by that which men swear, God also swore by that same thing, that is, by Himself.
11:45
但人是指著比自己大的起誓,祂卻不是指著比自己大的起誓;
But they swear as by one greater, whereas He does not swear as by one greater;
11:46
因為人指著自己起誓,與神指著自己起誓,並不相同;
for it is not the same thing for a man to swear by himself and for God to do so;
11:47
for man has no authority over himself.
11:48
You see then that this was said not so much with reference to Abraham as with reference to us.
11:49
'We,' he says, 'who have fled for refuge have strong encouragement to lay hold of the hope set before us.'
11:50
And here again: having patiently endured, he obtained the promise.
11:51
And he did not say, 'Since He swore.'
11:52
But what kind of oath it was, he made clear by saying, 'to swear by one greater.'
11:53
But since the race of men is unbelieving, He condescends to the same level as ourselves.
11:54
所以,正如祂為我們的緣故起誓,儘管不被人相信對祂是不相稱的;
As therefore He swears for our sakes, although it is unworthy of Him not to be believed;
11:55
so also He said, 'He learned from the things which He suffered,' since men consider this to be more worthy of belief, namely, to come to knowledge through experience.
11:56
「那擺在我們前頭的盼望」是什麼意思呢?他說,我們是從這些事推想將來的事;
What does 'the hope set before us' mean? From these things, he says, we conjecture the things to come;
11:57
for if these came to pass after so long a time, certainly those also will.
11:58
So that the things which happened toward Abraham give us assurance also concerning the things to come.
11:59
'Which we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and entering into that within the veil;'
11:60
'where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become a high priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.'
11:61
他指明,他們雖然還在世上,尚未離開今生,卻已經置身於所應許的事物之中了;
While they are yet in the world and have not yet departed from this life, he shows that they are already among the things promised;
11:62
for through hope we are already in heaven.
11:63
Or rather, by hope you have already obtained it.
11:64
他並沒有說「我們在裡面」,乃說「它自己進入了裡面」;
And he did not say, 'We are within,' but 'It itself entered within;'
11:65
which was both truer and more persuasive.
11:66
因為正如錨繫在船上,就不容船被拋來拋去,縱有千萬狂風搖撼,那繫牢的錨仍使它穩固;
For just as the anchor, being fastened to the ship, does not allow it to be tossed about, even though countless winds beat upon it, but being made fast, renders it steadfast;
11:67
你且看他所找到的比喻是何等切合;
And see how exceedingly fitting an image he found;
11:68
for he did not say 'foundation,' which was unsuitable, but 'anchor.'
11:69
For that which is amid the surge, and does not seem to be very firmly settled, stands upon the water as upon land, and is tossed and yet not tossed.
11:70
For in the case of those who are exceedingly strong and given to wisdom, Christ fittingly set down that saying:
11:71
'Who built his house upon the rock;'
11:72
but in the case of those who are despairing and are bound to be borne up through hope, Paul appropriately set down this.
11:73
因為狂風與大浪搖撼那船隻;
For the tempest and the great storm shake the vessel;
11:74
but hope does not allow it to be tossed about, even though countless winds beat upon it.
11:75
So that if we had not this, we should long ago have been sunk beneath the waves.
11:76
不但在屬靈的事上,就是在今生的事務上,人也可尋見這盼望的大能;
And not only in spiritual matters, but also in the affairs of this life one may find the great strength of this;
11:77
例如在經商、在耕種、在從軍上;
as, for instance, in trade, in agriculture, in military service;
11:78
for unless a man sets this before him at the very outset, he would not so much as put his hand to the work.
11:79
他並沒有單單說「錨」,乃說「又穩妥又堅固」;
And he did not simply say 'anchor,' but 'sure and steadfast;'
11:80
in order to declare the unfailing certainty of those who rest upon it for salvation.
11:81
'Entering into that within the veil.'
11:82
What does this mean? It means, penetrating into heaven.
11:83
Then he added faith as well, that there might not be hope only, but a hope exceedingly true.
11:84
For after the oath he sets down yet another thing, the demonstration that comes from the facts themselves, namely that 'Jesus has entered in as a forerunner on our behalf.'
11:85
Now a forerunner is the forerunner of certain persons, just as John was the forerunner of Christ.
11:86
And he did not say simply, 'He entered in,' but, 'Where a forerunner has entered in on our behalf,' as though we too were bound to attain to it.
11:87
因為先鋒與跟隨者之間的距離,本不當太大;
For the distance between the forerunner and those who follow ought not to be great;
11:88
since otherwise he would not even be a forerunner.
11:89
因為先鋒與跟隨者必須走在同一條路上;
For the forerunner and those who follow must be on the same road;
11:90
and the one goes ahead, while the others come up close behind.
11:91
'According to the order,' he says, 'of Melchizedek, having become high priest forever.'
11:92
Behold yet another consolation, seeing that our high priest is on high, and far better than those among the Jews, not only in manner, but also in place, in tabernacle, in covenant, and in person.
11:93
And this too was said with reference to that which is according to the flesh.
11:94
如此,凡他作祭司所服事的人,也理當要遠遠更為美好;
Those, then, of whom he is priest, ought also to be exceedingly better;
11:95
and as great as is the distance between Aaron and Christ, so great
11:96
is the distance between us and the Jews.
11:97
For see: on high we have the victim, on high the priest, on high the sacrifice.
11:98
所以,讓我們獻上那能在那祭壇上被獻的祭物;
Let us therefore offer up such sacrifices as can be presented upon that altar;
11:99
不再是綿羊與牛,不再是血與焚脂的香氣;
no longer sheep and oxen, no longer blood and the savor of burnt fat;
11:100
all these have been done away, and in their stead has been introduced the reasonable worship.
11:101
那屬靈理性的敬拜是甚麼呢?就是藉著魂、藉著靈所行的事。(他說:「神是靈;
And what is the reasonable worship? The things done through the soul, the things done through the spirit. ('God is spirit,' he says,
11:102
'and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and in truth');
11:103
就是那些不需要身體、不需要器具、不需要處所的事;
such things as need no body, no instruments, no places;
11:104
and these are, for instance, gentleness, self-control, almsgiving, forbearance of evil, long-suffering, humility of mind.
11:105
These sacrifices one may see prefigured from of old even in the Old Testament.
11:106
因為大衛說:「當獻上公義的祭給神」;
For 'Offer,' says David, 'to God a sacrifice of righteousness';
11:107
「我要向你獻上讚美的祭」;
'I will sacrifice to you a sacrifice of praise';
11:108
「凡以讚美獻祭的,便是榮耀我」;
'A sacrifice of praise shall glorify me';
11:109
「神所要的祭,就是憂傷痛悔的靈」;
'A sacrifice to God is a broken spirit';
11:110
'What does the Lord seek from you, but to hearken to Him? Whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin you did not delight in.'
11:111
「神啊,看哪,我來了為要遵行你的旨意」;
'Behold, I have come to do your will, O God';
11:112
'To what purpose do you bring me frankincense from Sheba?' And another says:
11:113
「使你歌唱的聲音遠離我,你彈琴的音樂我也不聽」;
'Take away from me the sound of your songs, and I will not listen to the melody of your instruments';
11:114
but instead of these, 'I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.'
11:115
Do you see with what sacrifices God is well pleased? Do you see how already from of old some had departed, and others had come in to take their place? These, then, let us bring near.
11:116
因為那些祭是屬乎財富、屬乎有錢之人的,這些卻是屬乎德行的;
For those belong to wealth and to those who possess it, but these to virtue;
11:117
那些是從外面來的,這些卻是從裡面來的;
those are from without, these from within;
11:118
those even any ordinary person could perform, but these only few.
11:119
人比羊貴重多少,這祭就比那祭貴重多少;
And by as much as a man is better than a sheep, by so much is this sacrifice better than that;
11:120
for here you offer up your own soul as the victim.
11:121
還有別的祭牲,就是那真正的全牲燔祭,即眾聖徒殉道者的身體;
There are also other victims, the true whole burnt offerings, the bodies of the holy martyrs;
11:122
在那裡,魂與身體都是聖潔的;
there both soul and body are holy;
11:123
those give off a great fragrance of sweet savor.
11:124
You too can, if you will, offer up such a sacrifice.
11:125
你縱然沒有用火焚燒身體,又有何妨?你能用另一種火;
For what if you do not burn your body with fire? You can do so with another fire;
11:126
such as the fire of voluntary poverty, the fire of affliction.
11:127
For when it is possible to live amid luxury and lavishness, yet to take up instead a toilsome and bitter life, and to mortify the body—is this not a whole burnt offering? Mortify your body and crucify it, and you too shall receive the crown of this martyrdom.
11:128
For what the sword accomplishes there, let willing zeal accomplish here.
11:129
Let not the love of money kindle nor hold you fast, but let this unseemly desire be burned up and quenched by the fire of the Spirit, and be cut in pieces by the sword of the Spirit.
11:130
這是美好的祭,不需要祭司,只需要那獻祭之人自己;
This is a good sacrifice, needing no priest, but only him who offers it;
11:131
a good sacrifice, wrought below indeed, but straightway taken up on high.
11:132
我們豈不希奇,古時降下的火焚燒了一切嗎?如今甚至有一種遠比那更為奇妙的火能夠降下,燒盡一切擺在面前的;
Do we not marvel that of old the fire descending consumed everything? It is possible even now for a fire to descend far more wonderful than that, and to consume all that is set before it;
11:133
更確切地說,不是燒盡它,乃是把它帶上諸天;
or rather, not to consume it, but to carry it up into heaven;
11:134
for it does not turn them to ashes, but presents them as gifts to God.
11:135
哥尼流的供物正是這樣的;
Such were the offerings of Cornelius;
11:136
for 'your prayers,' he says, 'and your alms have gone up for a memorial before God.'
11:137
Do you see a most excellent pairing? Then are we heard, when we ourselves also hearken to the poor who come to us.
11:138
'Whoever stops his ears,' it says, 'so as not to hear the poor, his own supplication God will not hear.'
11:139
「眷顧貧窮困苦人的,有福了;
'Blessed is he who considers the poor and needy;
11:140
in an evil day the Lord shall deliver him.'
11:141
And this is no other than that day, which becomes an evil one for sinners.
11:142
「眷顧的人」是甚麼意思呢?就是那明白窮人是何等光景、詳細察知他患難的人;
What is meant by 'he who considers'? He who understands what a poor man is, who learns thoroughly his affliction;
11:143
for he who has learned his affliction will surely and straightway have compassion on him.
11:144
你看見窮人時,不要從他旁邊走過,倒要立即想想:你若是他,你會是何等光景;
When you see a poor man, do not pass him by, but straightway consider what you would be, if you were he;
11:145
what would you not have wished all men to do? 'He who considers,' it says.
11:146
你要想想,他和你一樣是自由的,與你同有一樣的高貴出身,凡事都與你共有;
Consider that he is free like you, and shares the same nobility with you, and possesses all things in common with you;
11:147
yet this man, who has nothing less than you, you often do not even treat as equal to your dogs.
11:148
因為那些狗尚且得飽足了餅食,這人卻屢次餓著肚子睡去;
For they are filled with bread, but he has often gone to sleep hungry;
11:149
and the free man has become less honored than your slaves.
11:150
'But these render us a service,' you say.
11:151
What sort of service, pray, tell me? That they serve you well? If then I show that this man too renders you a service far greater than theirs, what will you say? For he will stand by you in the day of judgment, and will deliver you from the fire.
11:152
What such thing do all your slaves do? When Tabitha died, who raised her up? Was it slaves who stood around her, or the poor? Yet you are not willing even to treat the free man as equal to your slaves.
11:153
Bitter is the frost, and the poor man lies cast upon the ground, clad in rags, half-dead with cold, his teeth chattering; and by his very look and posture he is enough to move you to pity.
11:154
But you, warmed and flushed with drink, pass him by.
11:155
And how do you expect God to deliver you when you are in calamity? Often, too, you say this:
11:156
"If it were I, and I had someone who had sinned greatly against me in my power, I would forgive him; and shall not God forgive?" Do not say this. For you too overlook the man who has in no way wronged you, whom you are able to relieve, and yet you neglect him.
11:157
你既如此虧待這樣的一個人,神又怎會饒恕得罪祂的你呢?這些事豈不都是該下地獄的嗎?這有甚麼希奇的呢?一具屍體,往往已經死了、毫無知覺,再也感受不到那份尊榮,你卻用無數色彩繽紛、織金鑲銀的衣裳把它裹起來;
But if you deal thus deceitfully with such a one, how shall God forgive you who sin against Him? Are not these things deserving of hell? And what wonder is it? A body, often dead and senseless, no longer able to perceive the honour, you wrap about with countless garments, of varied hues and interwoven with gold;
11:158
but the living man, who suffers pain, who is cut to the heart, who is tortured, who is racked by hunger and cold, you overlook; and you gratify vainglory more than the fear of God.
11:159
But at once there come accusations against the one who approaches you:
11:160
"Why does he not work?" one says. "And why is he fed while remaining idle?" Tell me: do you yourself have what you have because you worked, and not rather because you received a paternal inheritance? And even if you do work, is that a reason to reproach another? Do you not hear Paul saying, "But you, in doing good, do not grow weary"? For after saying, "He who will not work, let him not eat," he added this.
11:161
"But he is an impostor," one says.
11:162
What are you saying, O man? For the sake of a single loaf and a garment do you call him an impostor? "But he sells it at once," one says.
11:163
And do you administer all your own affairs well? What then? Do all become poor from idleness? None from shipwrecks? None from lawsuits? None from theft? None from perils? None from sicknesses? None from some other misfortune? But if we hear someone lamenting such things and crying aloud, gazing up naked to heaven, with unkempt hair and clothed in rags, at once we call him the impostor, the cheat, the dissembler.
11:164
Are you not ashamed? Whom do you call an impostor? Give nothing, but do not accuse the man.
11:165
"But he has something," one says, "and he is only putting on an act."
11:166
This is an accusation against you, not against him.
11:167
他知道自己面對的是狠心的人,是野獸過於是人,也知道即使他說出一句可憐的話,也吸引不了任何人;
He knows that he is dealing with cruel men, with beasts rather than with human beings, and that even if he utters a piteous word, he draws no one to himself;
11:168
and for this reason he is compelled to put on a more pitiable appearance for himself, that he may break your soul with compassion.
11:169
If we see someone approaching in respectable attire, "This man is an impostor," one says, "and he approaches thus in order to seem to be of noble birth";
11:170
and if we see him in the opposite attire, this one too we revile.
11:171
What then are they to do? O the cruelty!
11:172
有人說:「他們為甚麼要露出殘缺的肢體呢?」乃是為了你的緣故;
"And for what reason," one says, "do they bare their mutilated limbs?" For your sake;
11:173
我們若有憐憫之心,他們就無需用這些伎倆了;
if we were merciful, they would have no need of these devices;
11:174
if they could persuade us at the first appeal, they would not have contrived so many things.
11:175
Who is so wretched as to be willing to cry out so much, to be willing to disgrace himself, to be willing to lament publicly together with his wife stripped bare, to strew ashes upon himself together with his children? How much worse are these things than poverty itself! Yet for these things they are not only not pitied, but even accused by us.
11:176
Shall we then still be indignant that, when we beseech God, we are not heard? Shall we then still be vexed that we do not prevail when we pray? Do we not shudder, beloved? "But I have often given," one says.
11:177
But do you yourself not eat continually? And do you drive away your children when they often ask of you? O the shamelessness!
11:178
你竟稱一個窮人為無恥嗎?你自己搶奪掠取倒不算無恥;
Do you call a poor man shameless? And you, who plunder, are not shameless;
11:179
but he, who begs for bread, is shameless? Do you not consider how great is the necessity of the belly? Do you not do all things for its sake? Do you not for its sake neglect spiritual things? Are there not set before us heaven and
11:180
the kingdom of heaven? Yet you, in dread of the belly's tyranny, endure all things, and you do not despise it. This is shamelessness.
11:181
Do you not see old men who are maimed? But O the folly!
11:182
"So-and-so," one says, "lends out so many gold pieces;
11:183
and so-and-so lends out so much, yet he begs."
11:184
你所講的乃是些哄小孩子的故事和無稽之談;
You are telling tales and nonsense fit for little children;
11:185
for those little ones are always hearing such tales from their nurse.
11:186
I am not persuaded, I do not believe it, God forbid.
11:187
Does a man lend out at interest and yet, being in abundance, go begging? For what reason, tell me? And what is more disgraceful than begging? It is better to die than to beg.
11:188
How long shall we be so harsh? What then? Do all lend out at interest? Are all impostors? Is no one truly poor? "Yes," one says, "and there are many."
11:189
Why then do you not help those, since you are so exact a scrutinizer of their lives? These are pretexts and excuses.
11:190
"Give to everyone who asks of you, and from him who wishes to borrow from you do not turn away";
11:191
stretch out your hand; let it not be drawn back.
11:192
We were not appointed as scrutinizers of men's lives, since otherwise we should pity no one.
11:193
Why, when you entreat God, do you say:
11:194
"Do not remember my sins"? So then, even if that man is exceedingly sinful, reckon this also in his case, and do not remember his sins.
11:195
如今是施慈愛的時候,不是嚴加查究的時候;
It is a time for loving-kindness, not for exact scrutiny;
11:196
and if you are not willing, send him away, but do not raise doubts and difficulties.
11:197
Why are you wretched and miserable? Why do you neither pity him yourself, nor allow those who are willing to give? For when someone hears from you that this man is a cheat, that that one is a hypocrite, that another lends out at interest,
11:198
他就對這些人也不施捨,對那些人也不施捨;
he gives neither to these nor to those;
11:199
for he suspects all to be of this sort.
11:200
For you know that we readily suspect evil things, but good things we no longer do.
11:201
我們要成為有憐憫的人,不是隨意的憐憫,乃要像我們在天上的父那樣;
Let us become merciful, not simply so, but as our Father who is in heaven;
11:202
祂連姦夫、淫亂的人、行邪術的人也養活;
He feeds even adulterers, and fornicators, and sorcerers;
11:203
and why do I say this? even those who have every kind of wickedness.
11:204
因為在這麼大的世界裏,勢必有許多這樣的人;
For in so great a world there must needs be many such;
11:205
然而祂仍然給他們眾人穿衣;
yet nevertheless He clothes them all;
11:206
no one ever perished of hunger, except one who did so willingly.
11:207
所以我們也要成為滿有憐憫的人;
So let us become compassionate;
11:208
if a man is in need and in distress, help him.
11:209
But now we have come to such a pitch of unreasonableness that we do this not only in the case of the poor who walk through the narrow lanes, but even in the case of men who lead the monastic life.
11:210
"So-and-so is an impostor," one says.
11:211
我方才豈不是說過,我們若不加分別地施捨給眾人,就必常常施行憐憫;
Was I not saying just now that if we give to all indiscriminately, we shall always be showing mercy;
11:212
我們若開始刨根究底、盤查不休,就永遠不會施行憐憫嗎?你在說甚麼呢?就因為他討一個餅,他就是騙子嗎?他若是討要成他連得的金銀,或華貴的衣裳,或奴僕,或別的甚麼,人稱他為詐欺者倒還合情合理;
but if we begin to pry and investigate, we shall never show mercy? What are you saying? Because he asks for a loaf of bread, is he an impostor? If indeed he were asking for talents of gold and silver, or costly garments, or slaves, or anything else of the kind, one might reasonably call him a cheat;
11:213
but if it is none of these, but food and covering, which belong to the philosophic life, is this the mark of a cheat, tell me? Let us cease from this ill-timed meddlesomeness, this satanic, this ruinous curiosity.
11:214
因為他若說自己是列在聖職人員之中,或自稱是祭司,那你就儘管刨根究底、細加盤查;
For if he says that he is enrolled among the clergy, or names himself a priest, then pry and investigate closely;
11:215
因為在那件事上,未經查驗就與他相交是有危險的;
for there the unexamined communion is not without danger;
11:216
因為所關乎的乃是重大的事;
for the peril concerns great matters;
11:217
但他若只是討要糊口的食物,你就甚麼都不必查究;
but if he asks for sustenance, examine nothing;
11:218
for you are not giving, but receiving.
11:219
Consider, if you will, how Abraham displayed his hospitality toward all who came to him.
11:220
他若對那些投奔他的人過分盤查,就不會款待天使了;
If he had been over-curious about those who took refuge with him, he would not have entertained angels;
11:221
因為他若不以為他們是天使,或許就連他們也與別人一同趕走了;
for perhaps, not thinking them to be angels, he would have thrust these away along with the others;
11:222
but since he received all, he received angels as well.
11:223
For does God give you the reward from the very lives of those who receive it? No, it is from your own free choice, from your own generosity, from your great love of humankind, from your goodness.
11:224
願這樣的心存在你裡面,你便必得著一切美善之物;
Let this be present in you, and you shall attain all good things;
11:225
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and always, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
