'And for this cause He is the Mediator of a new covenant, that, a death having taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first covenant, they that have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance.'
16:2
'For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be brought in the death of him that made it;'
16:3
'for a covenant is of force where there has been death, seeing it never has force while he that made it lives.'
16:4
'Whereupon neither has the first covenant been dedicated without blood.'
16:5
It was likely that many of those more feebly disposed, and especially from the fact that Christ had died,
16:6
would disbelieve His promises.
16:7
Paul therefore, overthrowing such a suspicion out of abundance, sets down this illustration, taking it from common usage.
16:8
What kind, then, is this? 'Nay, for this very reason you ought to be confident,' he says.
16:9
Why? Because it is not while those who make them live, but when they have died, that then covenants are of force and receive their validity.
16:10
Wherefore also he thus begins, saying, 'And for this cause,' he says,
16:11
'He is the Mediator of a new covenant.'
16:12
The covenant is made in view of the last day, the day of death.
16:13
And such is the nature of a covenant: it has some as heirs, and some as disinherited.
16:14
So also here, concerning the heirs Christ says:
16:15
'I will that where I am, these also may be.'
16:16
And again, concerning those disinherited, hear Him saying:
16:17
'I pray not for all, but for those who believe on Me through their word.'
16:18
遺命又有些是屬於立遺命者的,有些是屬於領受之人的;
Again, the covenant has some things belonging to him that makes it, and some belonging to those who receive it;
16:19
so that some things they are to receive, and some things they are to do.
16:20
For after promising countless things, He also requires the things that are on their part, saying:
16:21
'A new commandment I give unto you.'
16:22
遺命又必須有見證人;
Again, the covenant must have witnesses;
16:23
And hear Him again, saying:
16:24
I am the One who bears witness concerning Myself, and the Father who sent Me bears witness concerning Me.
16:25
祂要為我作見證——這是指著保惠師說的;
He will bear witness concerning Me — speaking of the Paraclete;
16:26
And He sent forth the twelve apostles, saying:
16:27
Testify solemnly before God.
16:28
And for this reason he says: He is the mediator of a new covenant.
16:29
What is a mediator? The mediator is no longer the master of the matter of which he is mediator; rather, the matter is one thing, and the mediator is another.
16:30
For instance, one becomes the mediator of a marriage — not the bridegroom, but the one who assists him who is about to be wed.
16:31
So indeed here too the Son became mediator between the Father and us.
16:32
The Father was unwilling to grant us this inheritance, but was angry with us and displeased, as toward those who had become estranged.
16:33
Therefore He became mediator between us and Himself, and persuaded Him.
16:34
And see how He became a mediator: He carried words to and fro, conveying to us the things from the Father, and adding thereto His own death.
16:35
We had given offence, we deserved to die; He died on our behalf, and made us worthy of the covenant.
16:36
For this very reason the covenant is also sure, since it was not thereafter made for the unworthy.
16:37
起初,祂是以父對待兒子的身分立了約;
For in the beginning, He made covenant as a Father with sons;
16:38
but since we had become unworthy, there was need no longer of a covenant, but of punishment.
16:39
他說,那麼你為甚麼還因律法而自高呢?因為律法將我們陷入這樣大的罪中,以致我們永不能得救;
Why then, he says, do you take great pride in the Law? For it brought us into such great sin that we could never have been saved,
16:40
unless our Master had died on our behalf, the Law would have availed nothing.
16:41
他不再單從一般的慣例來證實此事,也從舊約中所發生的事來證實;
And he confirms this no longer merely from common custom, but also from the things that came to pass in the Old Testament.
16:42
有人說,可是那裡並沒有一個死了的人;
But, someone says, there was no one there who had died;
16:43
how then was that covenant sure? By the same means, he says.
16:44
How? For there too was blood, just as here there is blood.
16:45
若那不是基督的血,你也不要希奇;
And if it was not the blood of Christ, do not marvel;
16:46
wherefore he also says: Whence not even the first was inaugurated apart from blood.
16:47
What does 'was inaugurated' mean? It became sure, it was ratified.
16:48
'Whence' — that is, for this reason, he says — there had to be a token both of the covenant and of death.
16:49
For to what end, tell me, was the book of the covenant sprinkled? For, he says, when every commandment had been spoken by Moses to all the people according to the Law, taking the blood of the calves with water and scarlet wool and hyssop, he sprinkled both the book itself and all the people, saying:
16:50
This is the blood of the covenant which God has enjoined upon you.
16:51
For what reason then, tell me, is the book of the covenant sprinkled, and the people also? Surely because that blood and the other things were a certain type of the precious blood being prefigured from above.
16:52
And why, moreover, with hyssop? Because, being dense and soft, it was retentive of the blood.
16:53
And what of the water? This too as characterizing the cleansing through water.
16:54
And the wool? This too was employed, so that the blood might be held fast.
16:55
他在此指明血與水乃是同一件事;
Here he shows that it is one and the same, both blood and water;
16:56
for His baptism is a symbol of His very Passion.
16:57
And the tabernacle likewise, and all the vessels of the ministry, he sprinkled with the blood.
16:58
All things are cleansed according to the Law, and apart from the shedding of blood there is no remission.
16:59
他為甚麼說「差不多」呢?他為甚麼加以限制呢?因為那些事並不是完全的潔淨,也不是完全的赦免,乃是半途而廢的,只是極小的一部分;
Why did he say 'almost'? Why did he restrict it? Because those things were not a perfect cleansing, nor a perfect remission, but half-complete and in a very small measure;
16:60
This, he says, is the blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you unto the remission of sins.
16:61
Where then did the book cleanse their minds? They themselves therefore were the books of the new covenant.
16:62
And where are the vessels of the ministry? They themselves are these.
16:63
那帳幕又在何處呢?他們自己再一次就是;
And where is the tabernacle? Again, they themselves are it;
16:64
For I will dwell in them, and walk about among them, He says.
16:65
但在這裡祂並沒有用朱紅色絨或牛膝草來灑;
But here He did not sprinkle with scarlet wool or with hyssop;
16:66
why so? Because the cleansing was not bodily, but spiritual, and the blood was spiritual.
16:67
How so? For it flowed not from the body of irrational beasts, but from a body fashioned by the Spirit.
16:68
With this blood not Moses, but Christ has sprinkled us, through the word that was spoken: This is the blood of the new covenant unto the remission of sins.
16:69
This word, dipped in the blood in place of hyssop, sprinkles all around upon all.
16:70
在那裡,身體是從外面被潔淨的;
And there indeed the body was cleansed outwardly;
16:71
因為那潔淨是屬身體的;
for the cleansing was bodily;
16:72
but here, since the cleansing is spiritual, it enters into the soul, and cleanses it, not being merely sprinkled around, but welling up as a fountain within our souls.
16:73
Those who have been initiated understand the things spoken.
16:74
在古人的事上,祂是灑那外表,那受灑的人隨後又把它洗去;
And in the case of those of old, He sprinkled the very surface, and again the one who was sprinkled washed it off;
16:75
因為他斷不是永遠帶著血跡到處走動;
for surely he did not go about forever stained with blood;
16:76
but in the case of the soul it is not so; rather, the blood is mingled with the very substance itself, making it strong and pure, and leading it to that unspeakable beauty itself.
16:77
He shows now, moreover, that death is the cause not only of confirmation, but also of cleansing.
16:78
因為死既顯為一件污穢的事,尤其是十字架的死,他就說死潔淨了人,並且是寶貴的潔淨,且是為著更大的事;
For since death seemed to be a defiling thing, and especially death by the cross, he says that it cleansed — and cleansed a precious cleansing, and unto greater things;
16:79
為這緣故,那些祭物先有了,都是為著這血;
for this reason the sacrifices came beforehand, on account of this blood;
16:80
for this reason there were lambs, for this reason all things came to be.
16:81
所以那天上之物的樣式,必須用這些來潔淨;
It was necessary therefore that the copies of the things in the heavens should be cleansed with these,
16:82
but the heavenly things themselves with better sacrifices than these.
16:83
And how are they copies of the things in the heavens? And what does he now call the things in the heavens? Is it heaven? Or the angels? None of these, but our own things.
16:84
So then our own things are in the heavens and are heavenly, even though they are performed on earth.
16:85
既然那些天使也在地上,卻仍被稱為屬天的;
Since the angels too are on earth, yet are called heavenly;
16:86
and the Cherubim appeared upon the earth, yet are heavenly.
16:87
And why do I say 'appeared'? Nay rather, they abide upon the earth, as indeed in Paradise.
16:88
但這絲毫沒有攔阻甚麼;
But nothing prevented this;
16:89
for even so it is heavenly.
16:90
And our commonwealth is in the heavens, even though we conduct our citizenship here.
16:91
That is, the philosophy that is among us, those who have been called yonder.
16:92
With better sacrifices than these.
16:93
那更美好的,乃是勝過某一美善之物;
That which is better is better than some good thing;
16:94
therefore the patterns also, the copies of the things in the heavens, have become good.
16:95
For neither would the copies be evil, since in that case those very things also, of which they are copies, would be evil.
16:96
那麼,我們若是屬天的,並且領受了這樣的本質,就讓我們戰兢敬畏罷;
If then we are heavenly, and have obtained such a nature as this, let us tremble with awe;
16:97
for it is possible, even now, for one who so wills not to be upon the earth.
16:98
For to be on the earth, or not to be, is a matter of manner and of deliberate choice.
16:99
神被稱為是在天上的;
God is said to be in heaven;
16:100
why so? Not as being confined by place—far be it!—nor as leaving the earth destitute of His presence, but by His relation and by His intimacy with the angels.
16:101
If then we too are near to God, we are in heaven.
16:102
For what care I for heaven, when I behold the Lord of heaven, when I myself become heaven? For 'We will come,' He says, 'I and My Father, and will make Our abode with him.'
16:103
Let us then make our soul a heaven.
16:104
天按其本性乃是明亮的;
The heaven is bright by its nature;
16:105
因為就是在冬天,它也不會變得幽暗;
for not even in winter does it become dark;
16:106
for it does not itself change its appearance, but the clouds running together cover it over.
16:107
We too have a Sun of righteousness.
16:108
我說過,人能夠變得如同天;
I said, It is possible to become like heaven;
16:109
and I see that it is possible even to become better than heaven.
16:110
How? When we have the Lord of the sun.
16:111
天在各方面都是純潔無瑕的;
The heaven is on every side pure and unstained;
16:112
無論是在冬天或在黑夜,它都不改變;
it is not altered either in winter or in night;
16:113
let us then not suffer this either, neither in tribulations nor in the wiles of the devil, but let us remain unstained and pure.
16:114
天是崇高的,離地甚遠;
The heaven is lofty, and far removed from the earth;
16:115
let us also do this: let us remove ourselves from the earth, and let us be lifted up to that height.
16:116
And whither shall we remove ourselves from the earth? When we set our imagination on the things of heaven.
16:117
天高過雨水和風暴,不被任何事物所侵襲;
The heaven is higher than both rains and storms, and is overtaken by nothing;
16:118
this too we shall be able to attain, if we are willing.
16:119
它看似遭受,其實卻並不遭受;
It seems to suffer, yet it does not in fact suffer;
16:120
let us then not suffer either, even though we seem to suffer.
16:121
因為正如在冬天,眾人不認識它的美麗,反倒以為它已改變了,惟有那些愛智慧的人卻曉得它毫無所損;
For just as in winter the many do not perceive its beauty, but suppose that it is changed, whereas those who love wisdom know that it has undergone no change;
16:122
照樣,論到我們在患難中,眾人也以為我們已隨之改變了,並且那患難已抓住了我們的心;
so too in the case of ourselves in tribulations, the many suppose that we have been transformed together with them, and that the affliction has laid hold even of our very heart;
16:123
but those who are wise know that it has not touched us.
16:124
所以讓我們成為天,上升到那高處,如此我們就要看見人與螞蟻毫無分別;
Let us then become heaven, let us ascend to that height, and so shall we see men differing in nothing from ants;
16:125
我不單是說貧窮人,也不單是說富足人,就是有人作元帥,有人作君王,我們在那裏也看不出誰是君王,誰是平民;
I do not speak of the poor only, nor of the rich, but even if one be a general, even if he be a king, we shall not there behold the king, nor the private man;
16:126
我們必不曉得甚麼是金,甚麼是銀,甚麼是絲綢的衣服,或是紫色的衣袍;
we shall not know what is gold, or what silver, or what a silken garment, or a purple one;
16:127
我們若坐在那高處,就要看萬物如同蒼蠅一般;
we shall see all things as flies, if we take our seat on that height;
16:128
there is no tumult there, no confusion, nor any clamour.
16:129
有人說,人既在地上行走,怎能被高舉到那高處呢?我並不單憑言語空口這樣說;
And how is it possible, says one, to be raised to that height while walking upon the earth? In word indeed I do not say this simply;
16:130
but if you will, I will show you in deed those who have attained to that height.
16:131
Who then are these? I mean those about Paul, who, being on the earth, dwelt in heaven.
16:132
And why do I say in heaven? They were higher than heaven, and than the other heaven, and ascended up to God Himself.
16:133
For 'Who shall separate us,' he says, 'from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or famine, or persecution, or nakedness, or peril, or sword?' And again, 'While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.'
16:134
Do you see that he did not even see the things here below? And that I may show you that he was higher than the heavens, hear him saying:
16:135
'For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of Christ.'
16:136
Do you see how his reasoning, having passed by all things, made him higher, not only than this creation, nor than these heavens, but also than any others if such there were? Did you behold the loftiness of his mind? Did you behold what the tentmaker became when he willed it—he who spent his whole life in the marketplace? For there is no hindrance, none at all, to our surpassing all men, if only we be willing.
16:137
For if we thus succeed in crafts that surpass the many, much more shall we succeed in that which requires no such toil.
16:138
For what, tell me, is harder than to walk along a stretched rope, as if upon level ground, and to walk aloft, and to put on and take off one's clothes as though sitting upon a couch? Does not the thing seem to us so terrible that we are not even willing to look at it, but are afraid, and tremble, even at the very sight? And what, tell me, is harder than to take a pole upon one's face, then to set a child aloft upon it and perform countless feats, and delight the spectators? And what is harder than to juggle with swords? And what, tell me, is more grievous than to search out the depth of the sea? And one might name countless other crafts.
16:139
然而美德比這一切都更容易,只要我們願意,升到天上的事也是如此;
But easier than all these is virtue, if we are willing, and the ascent to heaven;
16:140
for here it is necessary only to will, and all follows.
16:141
因為人不可說:我不能;
For it is not possible to say, I cannot;
16:142
因為這樣說乃是控告那造物主;
for this is to accuse the Creator;
16:143
for if He made us incapable, and then lays His commands upon us, it is an accusation against Him.
16:144
How is it then, says one, that many cannot? Because they will not.
16:145
他們不願意又是從何而來的呢?是從懶惰而來;
And whence comes it that they will not? From sloth;
16:146
so that, if they be willing, they will assuredly be able.
16:147
On this account Paul also says:
16:148
『我願意眾人像我一樣』,因他知道眾人都能像他一樣;
'I would that all men were even as I myself,' since he knew that all were able to be even as he was;
16:149
for he would not have said this, had it been impossible.
16:150
Tell me now, in all crafts, when we wish to become skilled in them, are we content with willing, or do we also lay our hands to the work? What I mean is this:
16:151
有人想要作船長;
Someone wishes to become a pilot;
16:152
he does not say, I will, and rest content with that, but he also lays his hand to the work.
16:153
he does not say merely, I will, but he also lays his hand to the work.
16:154
Again, one wishes to go abroad, and he does not say, I will, but he also lays his hand to the work.
16:155
既然如此,在凡事上僅僅立志是不夠的,乃必須加上行動;
So then in all things it does not suffice merely to will, but it is necessary also to add the deed;
16:156
but when you wish to ascend to heaven, do you say merely, I will? How then, says one, did you say that to will suffices? To will, together with works—that which lays hold of the matter, that which toils.
16:157
因為我們有神與我們同工、與我們同做工;
For we have God working with us and cooperating with us;
16:158
let us only choose, let us only apply ourselves to the matter as to a work, let us only take thought, let us only cast it into our mind, and all follows.
16:159
But if we sleep, and snoring expect to enter into heaven, when shall we be able to lay hold of the inheritance of the heavens? Let us then be willing, I beseech you, let us be willing.
16:160
我們為何為著這今生的緣故經營萬事——這今生我們明日就要撇下呢?所以讓我們揀選那能夠使我們永遠受用的美德;
Why do we traffic in all things for the sake of the present life, which we shall leave behind tomorrow? Let us then choose the virtue which shall suffice us unto all eternity;
16:161
在其中我們要長存到永遠,並要享受那永遠的美物;
in which we shall continue for ever, and shall enjoy the eternal good things;
16:162
