「凡管教的事,當時不覺得快樂,反覺得愁苦;
'Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous;
30:2
nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.'
30:3
「所以你們要把下垂的手和發酸的腿挺直起來;
'Therefore lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees;
30:4
and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned aside, but rather be healed.'
30:5
Those who drink bitter medicines first endure a certain unpleasantness, and only then do they perceive the benefit.
30:6
因為美德是這樣,惡行也是這樣;
For such is virtue, such is vice;
30:7
在惡行中,享樂在先,隨後便是沮喪;
there pleasure comes first, then dejection;
30:8
here dejection comes first, and then pleasure.
30:9
For it is not the same thing to be grieved first and rejoice afterward, as to rejoice first and be grieved afterward.
30:10
怎麼說呢?在此,對將來沮喪的預期,使當下的快樂減少;
How so? For here the expectation of the dejection to come makes the present pleasure less;
30:11
但在彼,對將來喜樂的預期,卻削減了當下愁苦的劇烈;
but there the expectation of the pleasure to come cuts short the intensity of the present dejection;
30:12
so that it comes about that there one never truly rejoices, but here one is never truly grieved.
30:13
And the difference lies not only in this, but in another respect as well.
30:14
How so? Because even the times are not equal, but the one is much greater and more abundant.
30:15
And here there is even something more in spiritual matters.
30:16
From this, then, Paul undertakes to introduce his consolation, and again he takes up the common judgment, which no one is able to withstand, nor to contend against by a universal verdict.
30:17
For when someone states what is agreed by all, all give their assent, and no one resists.
30:18
For such is chastening, it has such a beginning as this.
30:19
'Now no chastening for the present seems to be joyous, but grievous.'
30:20
因為管教並非真的愁苦,只是看似如此;
For chastening is not really grievous, but only seems so;
30:21
也並非這一種是、那一種不是,而是所有的管教都是如此;
nor is one kind so and another not, but all of it;
30:22
他說:「凡管教的事,當時不覺得快樂,反覺得愁苦」;
'For all chastening,' he says, 'seems to be not joyous, but grievous';
30:23
that is, both the human and the spiritual.
30:24
你看他如何從眾人共有的觀念來立論嗎?他說:「當時看似愁苦」;
Do you see how he contends from the common notions? 'It seems,' he says, 'to be grievous';
30:25
因為有哪一種愁苦能生出喜樂呢?沒有;
for what grief is there that gives birth to joy? None;
30:26
just as, then, there is no pleasure that gives birth to dejection.
30:27
'But afterward it yields the peaceable fruits of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.'
30:28
He said not 'fruit' but 'fruits,' indicating the great abundance.
30:29
'To those,' he says, 'who have been trained by it.'
30:30
What does 'to those who have been trained by it' mean? To those who have borne up for a long time and have endured.
30:31
Do you see how he has used even an auspicious name? So then, chastening is a training, making the athlete strong, and unconquerable in the contests, and invincible in the wars.
30:32
If then all chastening is such, this one too will be such.
30:33
So that one ought to expect good things, and an end that is sweet and peaceable.
30:34
你也不要希奇,管教雖然嚴厲,卻結出甘甜的果實;
And do not marvel if, being harsh, it has sweet fruits;
30:35
since in trees too the bark is well-nigh tasteless and rough, but the fruits are sweet.
30:36
But he took this from the common notion.
30:37
既然人當期待這樣的事,你們為何憂傷呢?為何忍受了那些痛苦的事,卻在美好的事上灰心呢?那些你們必須忍受的難受之事,你們既已忍受;
If then one ought to expect such things, why do you grieve? Why, having endured the painful things, do you grow faint concerning the good? The unpleasant things which you had to endure, you have endured;
30:38
do not then grow faint concerning the recompense.
30:39
'Therefore lift up the hands that hang down and the feeble knees, and make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned aside, but rather be healed.'
30:40
He speaks as to runners and boxers and warriors.
30:41
Do you see how he arms them, how he rouses them? Here he says this concerning their reasonings.
30:42
That is to say, not doubting.
30:43
For if the discipline proceeds from love, if it takes its beginning from tender care, if it ends in a good result—
30:44
for this He demonstrates by deeds, by words, and by all things—
30:45
why then are you fainthearted? For such are those who despair, who are not strengthened by the hope of things to come.
30:46
不是瘸腿殘廢,乃是要轉回到先前的光景;
not lameness, but that they should be turned back to their former state;
30:47
for he who runs while lame only aggravates the injury.
30:48
Do you see that it lies within us to be wholly healed? 'Pursue peace with all men, and holiness, without which no one shall see the Lord.'
30:49
The very thing he said above—'Not forsaking the assembling of yourselves together'—this too he here hints at.
30:50
For nothing so much renders men easy to overcome and easy to master in temptations as being torn asunder from one another.
30:51
Break up a phalanx in war, and the enemy will need no toil, but will take them captive already bound, finding them alone and thereby the weaker.
30:52
'Pursue peace with all men,' he says.
30:53
Therefore even with those who do evil.
30:54
'If it be possible, as much as lies in you, being at peace with all men.'
30:55
'For your part,' he says, 'be at peace, in no way injuring godliness; but in the wrongs you suffer, bear them nobly;'
30:56
for long-suffering is a great weapon in temptations.
30:57
Thus also did Christ make His disciples strong, saying:
30:58
'Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves;'
30:59
'be therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.'
30:60
What do you say? We are in the midst of wolves, and You bid us be as sheep and as doves? 'Yes,' He says;
30:61
for nothing so shames the one who does evil as your bearing nobly what is brought upon you, and requiting neither in word nor in deed.
30:62
This both makes us more given to true wisdom, and procures for us a greater reward, and benefits them as well.
30:63
But has such a one insulted you? Do you bless him.
30:64
See how much you gain from this:
30:65
you have quenched the evil, you have procured for yourself a reward, you have put him to shame, and you yourself have suffered nothing dreadful.
30:66
'Pursue peace with all men, and holiness.'
30:67
'Holiness'—what does he mean? Chastity, and the decency which is in marriage.
30:68
'Whether one is without marriage,' he says, 'let him remain pure; or let him marry;'
30:69
'or whether one is in marriage, let him not commit fornication, but let him use his own wife;'
30:70
for this also is holiness.
30:71
How? Marriage is not holiness, but marriage preserves the holiness that comes from faith, not permitting a man to give heed to a harlot.
30:72
因為婚姻是尊貴的,卻不是聖的;
For marriage is honorable, but not holy;
30:73
marriage is pure, yet it does not itself confer sanctity, except in that it hinders one from defiling the sanctity given by faith.
30:74
'Without which,' he says, 'no one shall see the Lord.'
30:75
Which is what he says also in the Epistle to the Corinthians:
30:76
neither fornicators, nor adulterers, nor idolaters, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, nor the covetous, nor thieves, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners shall inherit the kingdom of God.
30:77
For how shall he who has become the body of a harlot be able to be the body of Christ? 'Looking diligently lest anyone fall short of the grace of God;'
30:78
'lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;'
30:79
Do you see how everywhere he commits the common salvation into the hands of each? 'Exhorting one another,' he says, 'daily, while it is called Today.'
30:80
所以你們不要把一切都推卸在教師身上,也不要把一切都推卸在那些帶領的人身上;
Do not therefore cast everything upon the teachers, nor everything upon those who preside;
30:81
you too are able, he says, to edify one another.
30:82
Which also, writing to the Thessalonians, he said:
30:83
'Edify one another, even as also you do;'
30:84
and again, 'Comfort one another with these words.'
30:85
This same thing we too now exhort you to do.
30:86
因為你們若肯,就能在彼此之間成就比我們更多的事;
For you, if you are willing, will accomplish more than we toward one another;
30:87
因為你們彼此相處的時候更多,比我們更知道彼此的事,也不是不曉得彼此的缺點,並且你們彼此有更多的坦誠、愛心和親密的來往;
for you spend more time with one another, and you know one another's affairs better than we, and you are not ignorant of one another's failings, and you have more freedom of speech and love and familiarity;
30:88
這些對於教導並不是小事,乃是極大的門路和機會;
and these things are no small matters for teaching, but great openings and opportunities;
30:89
and you will be able to rebuke and to exhort more than we.
30:90
And not only this, but that I am one, while you are many, and all of you, however many you are, can be teachers.
30:91
所以我懇求你們,不要輕忽這恩賜;
Therefore, I beseech you, do not neglect this gift;
30:92
你們各人有妻子,有朋友,有僕人,有鄰舍;
each of you has a wife, has a friend, has a servant, has a neighbor;
30:93
let him rebuke this one, let him exhort that one.
30:94
For how is it not absurd, that for the sake of food you form common meals and banquets, and have an appointed day so as to gather one another together, and that what each lacks when he is by himself is supplied through fellowship—as, for instance, whether one must go out to a funeral, or to
30:95
赴宴,或是在某事上幫助鄰舍;
banquets, or to lend a hand to one's neighbor in some matter;
30:96
然而為著德行的教導,你們卻不這樣行麼?是的,我懇求你們,不可有一人疏忽;
but for the teaching of virtue you do not do this? Yes, I beseech you, let no one be neglectful;
30:97
for he receives a great reward from God.
30:98
為要叫你們明白:那領受五千銀子的,就是教師;
And that you may learn it: he who was entrusted with the five talents is the teacher;
30:99
但那作門徒的若說:「我不過是門徒,我沒有危險」,就把他從神所領受的話——那平常而簡單的話——埋藏起來,並且不勸勉、不放膽直言、不責備、不警戒(縱然他能),反倒把它埋在地裡;
But if the disciple should say, 'I am a disciple, I incur no danger,' and should bury that word which he received from God—that common and simple word—and should not exhort, nor speak boldly, nor reprove, nor admonish though he is able, but should bury it in the earth;
30:100
因為那把神的恩賜埋藏起來的心,實在就是塵土和灰燼;
for the heart that buries the gift of God is in truth earth and ashes;
30:101
if then he should bury it, whether from sloth or from wickedness, it will not avail him to say, 'I had but one talent.'
30:102
你至少該把那一千拿來,使那銀子加倍;
You ought at least to have brought the one and doubled the talent;
30:103
if you had brought one, you would not have been accused.
30:104
For neither did He say to him who brought the two, 'Why did you not bring five?' but He counted him worthy of the same things as him who brought the five.
30:105
為甚麼呢?因為他盡他所有的作工了;
Why so? Because he worked as much as he had;
30:106
and it was not because he received less than the one who was entrusted with the five that on this account he grew slothful, nor did he make his smaller portion an excuse for idleness.
30:107
你也不該只看那有兩千的;
Nor ought you to look to him who had the two;
30:108
rather you ought to have looked to him, and as he imitated the one who had five, though he himself had but two, so you too ought to have emulated him who had the two.
30:109
因為那有錢財而不分給人的,尚且有刑罰為他存留;
For if punishment is laid up for the one who has money and does not share it;
30:110
那能以任何方法勸勉人卻不去行的,怎能沒有極大的刑罰呢?那裡是餵養身體,這裡卻是餵養靈魂;
how shall there not be the greatest punishment for the one who is able to exhort in any way whatever, and does not do it? There the body is nourished, here the soul;
30:111
there you hinder temporal death, here eternal death.
30:112
But I have no gift of speech, one says.
30:113
Yet there is no need of eloquence, nor of fine speaking.
30:114
If you see your friend committing fornication, say to him:
30:115
'This is a wicked thing that you are engaged in; are you not ashamed, do you not blush?'
30:116
For does he himself not know that it is an evil? one asks. Yes, he knows it, but he is dragged along by his lust.
30:117
連患病的人也知道喝冷水有害,但他們仍然需要有人加以攔阻;
Even the sick know that drinking cold water is harmful, yet nonetheless they have need of those who will restrain them;
30:118
for one who is in the grip of his malady cannot easily suffice for himself in his sickness.
30:119
所以你這健康的人,是他得醫治所需要的;
You therefore, who are in health, are needed for his healing;
30:120
and even if he is not persuaded by your word, watch him as he goes off and hold him back—perhaps he will be shamed into repentance.
30:121
有人問:這有什麼益處呢?他這樣做既是為了我的緣故,又是因被我攔住?不要如此吹毛求疵;
And what is the use, one asks, when he does this for my sake, and because he has been restrained by me? Do not be so exacting;
30:122
眼下無論用什麼方法,先把他從這邪惡的行為中拉開;
for the time being, by whatever means, draw him away from the wicked deed;
30:123
讓他習慣不再走進那個深坑;
let him become accustomed not to go off into that pit;
30:124
whether it be for your sake, or by whatever means he is hindered, there will be gain from it.
30:125
For when you have accustomed him not to go off, then, taking him after he has drawn a little breath, you will be able to teach him that this must be avoided for God's sake, and not for a man's.
30:126
Do not wish to set everything right at a single stroke, since you will not be able to, but gently and little by little.
30:127
If you see him going off to drinking bouts and to banquets filled with drunkenness, there too do the same, and again exhort him, that if he notices any fault in you, he should help and correct it.
30:128
For in this way he will more readily bear the reproof concerning himself, when he sees that you too stand in need of reproofs, and that you come not as one who has set everything right, nor as a teacher, but as a friend and brother lending aid.
30:129
對他說:「我提醒你那有益的事,就是使你得了益處;
Say to him: 'I have benefited you by reminding you of what is profitable;
30:130
你也一樣,凡你察覺我有什麼缺點,就攔住我、糾正我;
and you too, whatever fault you notice in me, hold me back, correct me;
30:131
if you see me irascible, if greedy, restrain me, bind me with your admonition.'
30:132
這樣,弟兄得著弟兄的幫助,就如同一座堅固的城;
In this way a brother aided by a brother becomes like a fortified city;
30:133
因為建立友誼的並不是吃喝;
for it is not eating and drinking that makes friendship;
30:134
因為這樣的友誼連強盜和兇手也有;
for such friendship even robbers and murderers have;
30:135
但我們若是朋友,若真正彼此關懷,就當在這些事上彼此扶持;
but if we are friends, if we truly care for one another, let us assist one another in these things;
30:136
these things lead us to a profitable friendship, these things hinder us from departing into hell.
30:137
所以,受責備的人不可惱怒;
Therefore let neither the one who is reproved be indignant;
30:138
因為我們都是人,都有缺點;
for we are human beings, and we have faults;
30:139
而責備人的,也不可像譏笑、踐踏對方那樣去做,更不可張揚出去,乃要私下、以溫柔行之;
nor let the one who reproves do this as though mocking or trampling upon him, and making a public spectacle of it, but privately, with gentleness;
30:140
for the one who reproves has need of greater gentleness, that thus he may persuade the other to endure the incision.
30:141
你們豈沒有看見醫生嗎?當他們燒灼、當他們動刀時,是以何等的溫柔施行治療?責備人的更當如此行;
Do you not see the physicians, when they cauterize, when they cut, with how much gentleness they apply the treatment? Much more must those who reprove do this;
30:142
因為責備比火與鐵更為劇烈,能叫人跳起來;
for reproof is sharper than fire and iron, and makes one leap up;
30:143
for this reason the physicians too devise many things, so as to make the incision bearable, and apply it as gently as possible, yielding a little, and then giving the patient leave to breathe.
30:144
So too must we administer reproofs, that those who are reproved may not recoil.
30:145
Therefore even if we must be insulted, even if we must be struck, let us not decline it.
30:146
因為那些被動刀的人,也向動刀的人發出無數的怨聲;
For those too who are being cut cry out a thousand things against those who cut them;
30:147
yet those physicians look to none of these things, but only to the health of the sufferers.
30:148
So indeed here too we must do all things to the end that the reproof may prove useful, bearing all things while looking to the reward that is laid up.
30:149
'Bear one another's burdens,' he says, 'and so fulfil the law of Christ.'
30:150
所以我們這樣既彼此責備、又彼此擔待,就能夠成全基督的建造;
Thus therefore, both reproving and bearing with one another, we shall be able to complete the edifice of Christ;
30:151
and thus you will make our labor light, taking part with us in all things, and stretching out a hand, and becoming sharers and partakers both of one another's salvation and each of his own.
30:152
Let us therefore endure, both bearing one another's burdens and reproving one another, that we may attain the good things promised to us, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
