For surely it is not of angels that He takes hold, but He takes hold of the seed of Abraham.
5:2
Wherefore He was bound to be made like His brethren in all things.
5:3
Paul, wishing to show forth the great lovingkindness of God, and the love which He had toward the human race, after saying this—
5:4
Since then the children have shared in blood and flesh, He also in like manner partook of the same things; he dwells upon this passage and says:
5:5
祂原不是救拔天使;
For surely it is not of angels that He takes hold;
5:6
你不要草率地看待這話,也不要以為這是件微小的事,就是祂取了從我們而出的肉體;
For do not attend to what is said merely in passing, nor suppose this to be some slight matter—that He took upon Himself flesh from us;
5:7
因為祂並沒有將這恩賜給天使;
for He did not bestow this grace upon angels;
5:8
For surely it is not of angels that He takes hold, but of the seed of Abraham.
5:9
What is it that he says? He did not take upon Himself the nature of an angel, but of a man.
5:10
And what does 'He takes hold of' mean? He did not lay hold, he says, of that nature of the angels, but of ours.
5:11
But why did he not say 'He took up,'
5:12
but used this expression, 'He takes hold of'? It is drawn from the metaphor of those who pursue people fleeing from them and do everything to overtake the fugitives and lay hold of those darting away.
5:13
For human nature was fleeing from Him, and fleeing far off (for we were, he says, alienated far from God, and were without God in the world); yet He, pursuing after it, overtook it.
5:14
From this it is shown that lovingkindness alone, and love, and tender care wrought this.
5:15
所以,正如他說:「天使豈不都是服役的靈,奉差遣為那將要承受救恩的人效力麼?」他藉此顯明人的性情在神眼中何等寶貴,並且神何等看重它;
Just as, then, when he says, Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for the sake of those who shall inherit salvation?—he shows how greatly prized human nature is by Him, and that God has much regard for it;
5:16
so also here he sets down a far greater thing, speaking by way of comparison:
5:17
For it is not of angels that He takes hold.
5:18
For indeed it is a great and wondrous thing, full of astonishment, that flesh taken from us should be seated on high and be worshiped by angels and archangels and the Seraphim and the Cherubim.
5:19
我每逢把這事放在心上思想,就不勝驚訝,並且對人類懷有崇高的想像;
Often, when I take this into my mind, I am beside myself and imagine great things concerning the human race;
5:20
for I behold great and glorious beginnings, and much earnest care on God's part for our nature.
5:21
It is not simply of men that He takes hold, but wishing to raise them up and to show their race to be great and honorable, he says:
5:22
But of the seed of Abraham He takes hold.
5:23
Wherefore He was bound to be made like His brethren in all things.
5:24
「凡事」是甚麼意思呢?他說,祂降生了、被養育了、漸漸長大了、受盡了一切所該受的,最後死了;
What is 'in all things'? He was born, he says, was nourished, grew up, suffered all that was necessary, and finally died;
5:25
this is what 'to be made like His brethren in all things' means.
5:26
因為他既已詳論了祂的尊大和祂在高天的榮耀,如今便開始論到那救贖經綸的話;
For since he had discoursed at length concerning His majesty and His glory on high, he now sets in motion the discourse concerning the dispensation;
5:27
你且看他以何等的智慧和能力,顯明祂懷著極大的殷勤,為要與我們相同;
and behold with how much understanding and power he shows Him bestowing great earnestness that He might be made like to us;
5:28
which was a mark of great tender care.
5:29
For having said above, 'Since then the children have shared in blood and flesh, He also in like manner partook of the same,' here too he says:
5:30
祂凡事該與祂的弟兄相同;
That in all things He should be made like unto His brethren;
5:31
as though he were saying: He who is so great, who is the brightness of the glory, who is the express image of the substance, who made the ages, who sits at the right hand of the Father—this One willed and was eager to become in all things our brother, and for this cause He left the angels and the powers above, and came down to us, and laid hold of us.
5:32
And consider also how many good things He wrought:
5:33
祂廢除了死亡,把我們從魔鬼的暴虐權勢下救拔出來,使我們脫離奴役,並藉著成為我們的弟兄而尊榮了我們;
He abolished death, He cast us out from the tyranny of the devil, He freed us from bondage, He honored us by becoming our brother;
5:34
and He honored us not with the brotherhood alone, but also with ten thousand other things:
5:35
for He willed also to become our High Priest before the Father:
5:36
That He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God.
5:37
For this reason, he says, He took upon Him our flesh—out of love for mankind alone—that He might have mercy on us.
5:38
For there is no other cause of the dispensation than this alone:
5:39
for He saw us cast down upon the ground, perishing, tyrannized by death, and He had mercy.
5:40
'To make propitiation,' he says, 'for the sins of the people, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest.'
5:41
What does 'faithful' mean? True, able.
5:42
For the Son alone is a faithful High Priest, able to deliver from their sins those of whom He is High Priest.
5:43
Therefore, that He might offer a sacrifice able to cleanse us, for this cause He became man.
5:44
That is, in the things pertaining to God.
5:45
他說,我們本是與神為敵的,是被定罪的、被羞辱的;
We had been made enemies to God, he says, condemned, dishonored;
5:46
沒有一個人能為我們獻上祭物;
there was no one to offer a sacrifice on our behalf;
5:47
He saw us in this state and had mercy, not appointing a high priest for us, but Himself becoming a faithful High Priest.
5:48
Then, showing in what way He is faithful, he added, 'To make propitiation for the sins of the people.'
5:49
For in that He Himself hath suffered, he says, being tempted, He is able to succor them that are tempted.
5:50
This is very lowly and mean and unworthy of God.
5:51
For in that He Himself hath suffered, he says.
5:52
Here he speaks concerning Him who was made flesh; and perhaps it was said also for the full assurance of the hearers, and because of their weakness.
5:53
祂正是藉著親身經歷我們所受的苦難而來的;
Through the very experience of the things we suffered He came;
5:54
如今祂並非不知道我們的苦難;
now He is not ignorant of our sufferings;
5:55
因為祂不僅以神的身分知道,也以人的身分,藉著祂所受試探的經歷而認識了這些苦難;
for He knows them not as God only, but also as man He came to know them through the experience by which He was tempted;
5:56
He suffered many things; He knows how to suffer along with us.
5:57
然而神原是不受苦、不能受害的;
And yet God is impassible;
5:58
但他在這裏所敘述的乃是道成肉身的事;
but here he is recounting the things of the Incarnation;
5:59
and the very flesh of Christ suffered many dreadful things.
5:60
祂知道甚麼是患難,知道甚麼是試探,其體會絕不亞於我們這些受過苦的人;
He knows what affliction is, He knows what temptation is, and no less than we who have suffered;
5:61
What then is the meaning of, 'He is able to succor them that are tempted'? As one might say:
5:62
With great readiness He will stretch out His hand, He will be full of compassion.
5:63
For since they wished to have something great and more than those from the Gentiles, he shows them having more precisely in this, wherein it did no harm at all to those from the Gentiles.
5:64
In what respect is this? That from them is salvation, that He laid hold of them first, that from them He took flesh.
5:65
For, he says, He does not lay hold of angels, but He lays hold of the seed of Abraham.
5:66
By this he also honors the patriarch, and shows too what 'the seed of Abraham' means.
5:67
For he reminds them of the promise made to him, which says:
5:68
'To thee and to thy seed will I give this land,' by the smallest thing showing the nearness—that all are of one.
5:69
But since that nearness was not very great, he comes back again to this one, and thereafter dwells upon the dispensation according to the flesh, and says:
5:70
'To make propitiation for the sins of the people.'
5:71
因為單單那願意成為人的意念,本身就是極大關懷與慈愛的表記;
For the very willing to become man was itself a mark of great care and love;
5:72
but now it is not this alone, but also the immortal good things which through Him have been bestowed on us:
5:73
'For to make propitiation,' he says, 'for the sins of the people.'
5:74
Not 'of the world,' but 'of the people'? Yet in truth He bore the sins of us all.
5:75
這是因為他此刻的論述乃是關乎他們的緣故;
Because for the present his discourse was concerning them;
5:76
因為天使也曾對約瑟說:『你要給祂起名叫耶穌;
since the angel also said to Joseph, 'Thou shalt call His name Jesus;
5:77
for He shall save His people.'
5:78
For this had to happen first, and for this He came—that He might save these, and then through these save those—even though the contrary came to pass.
5:79
This too the apostles said from the beginning: 'Unto you first God, having raised up His Servant, sent Him to bless you;'
5:80
and again, 'To you was the word of this salvation sent.'
5:81
Here he shows the Jewish nobility, saying:
5:82
'To make propitiation for the sins of the people.'
5:83
For that it is He who forgives the sins of all, He showed also in the case of the paralytic, when He said:
5:84
'Thy sins are forgiven thee;'
5:85
for He says to the disciples:
5:86
'Go ye and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.'
5:87
But whenever Paul lays hold of the flesh, thereafter he utters all lowly things, fearing nothing:
5:88
'Partakers of a heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Jesus Christ, who was faithful to Him that made Him, as also Moses was in all His house.'
5:89
他既要藉著比較將基督置於摩西之上,便將論述引到大祭司職分的律法上;
Being about to set Him above Moses by way of comparison, he brought his discourse to the law of the high priesthood;
5:90
for they all held no small opinion concerning Moses.
5:91
And he already lays down beforehand the seeds of the superiority.
5:92
He begins therefore from the flesh, but ascends to the Godhead, where there was no longer any comparison to be made.
5:93
He began from the flesh, for the present placing them on an equal footing, and says:
5:94
'As also Moses was in all His house.'
5:95
他也不在一開頭就顯出那超越性,免得聽者退避跳開,立刻塞住耳朵;
And he does not show the superiority at the outset, lest the hearer leap away and immediately stop up his ears;
5:96
for even though they were believers, yet nevertheless they still had much conscience toward Moses.
5:97
'Being faithful,' he says, 'to Him that made Him.'
5:98
Made Him what? An Apostle and a High Priest.
5:99
Here he says nothing about essence, nor about the Godhead, but for the present speaks of human dignities.
5:100
正如摩西也在神的全家盡忠;
As also Moses was faithful in all his house;
5:101
that is, among the people, or in the temple.
5:102
但在此他說「在神的家中」這句話;
But here the expression, 'In his house,' he says;
5:103
For just as some steward and manager of a household, so was Moses among the people.
5:104
For that he here calls the people a house, he added, 'Whose house we are;'
5:105
For this one has been counted worthy of greater glory than Moses,
5:106
inasmuch as he who built the house has more honour than the house.
5:107
And he himself, he says, was of the household.
5:108
And he did not say, 'For the one is a servant, but the other a Master,' but he indicated this covertly.
5:109
既然那家就是百姓,而他自己也屬於百姓,那麼他自己也就屬於這家;
If then the house was the people, and he himself also belonged to the people, then he too belonged to the household;
5:110
for thus we too are accustomed to speak, saying that such a one belongs to the household of such a one.
5:111
但在此他所說的「家」並非指聖殿;
But here by 'house' he does not mean the temple;
5:112
for it was not God who built it, but men.
5:113
但那造他的乃是神;
But he who made him is God;
5:114
且看他如何隱約地顯明其優越;
And observe how he shows the superiority covertly;
5:115
'Faithful,' he says, 'in all his house,' he himself also being of the house, that is, of the people.
5:116
The craftsman has more honour than his works, but also he who built the house more than the house.
5:117
But he who built all things is God.
5:118
Do you see that he speaks not of the temple, but of the whole people? 'And Moses indeed was faithful in all his house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken.'
5:119
Behold yet another superiority, that drawn from the Son and the servants.
5:120
Do you see again that by the appellation of 'Son' he hints at genuine sonship? 'But Christ as a Son over his own house.'
5:121
Do you see how he distinguishes the creature from the Creator, how the servant from the Son? And the one enters into his Father's possessions as a Master, but the other as a servant.
5:122
'Whose house we are, if we hold fast the boldness and the boasting of hope firm unto the end.'
5:123
Here again he exhorts them to stand nobly, and not to fall down.
5:124
'For we shall be,' he says, 'the house of God, as Moses was, if we hold fast the boldness and the boasting of hope firm unto the end;'
5:125
以致那在試煉中憂傷跌倒的,便無可誇的了;
so that he who grieves in temptations and falls down does not boast;
5:126
那羞愧的、那躲藏的,便沒有膽量了;
he who is ashamed, who hides himself, has no boldness;
5:127
Then he also commends them, saying:
5:128
'If indeed we hold fast the boldness and the boasting of hope firm unto the end;'
5:129
But there is need of the end also, and not merely to stand, but to hold the hope firm in full assurance of faith, not being shaken by temptations.
5:130
And do not be surprised if the phrase, 'He himself having been tempted,' is spoken in a more human way.
5:131
因為若聖經論到那未曾成肉身的父,說:「耶和華從天上垂看,觀看世上一切的人」,就是說,他確切地察知一切;
For if concerning the Father, who was not incarnate, the Scripture says, 'The Lord looked down from heaven and saw all the sons of men,' that is, he accurately learned all things;
5:132
and again, 'I will go down now and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it;'
5:133
and again, 'God cannot bear the wickednesses of men;'
5:134
聖經藉此顯明他忿怒的深重;
the divine Scripture thereby showing the greatness of his wrath;
5:135
much more may these human-like affections be said concerning Christ, who also suffered in the flesh.
5:136
For since many men consider experience to be more trustworthy than all things for knowledge, he wishes to show that he who has suffered knows what human nature suffers.
5:137
'Wherefore,' he says, 'holy brethren,'
5:138
The word 'Wherefore' stands for 'on this account,' he says. 'Partakers of a heavenly calling.'
5:139
所以你們既在那裡蒙召,就不要在此追求甚麼;
Therefore seek nothing here, if you have been called there;
5:140
for there is the reward, there is the recompense.
5:141
What then? 'Consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession, Jesus Christ, who was faithful to him that made him, as also was Moses in all his house.'
5:142
What is, 'Being faithful to him that made him'? That is, provident, presiding over his own, and not permitting them to be simply carried along.
5:143
'As also Moses in all his house.'
5:144
That is, 'Know who the High Priest is and of what kind, and you will not need other consolation nor exhortation.'
5:145
他稱他為「使者」,是因為他被差遣;
He calls him 'Apostle' because he was sent;
5:146
他又說「我們所承認的大祭司」,就是我們所信的;他說得好;
and he says 'High Priest of our confession,' that is, of our faith. He said it well;
5:147
for this one also has been entrusted with a people, just as that one with the charge of a people, though a greater one, and over greater things.
5:148
因為摩西是作家中的僕人,而基督是作兒子;
For Moses indeed as a household servant, but Christ as a Son;
5:149
and the one cares for what is another's, but this one for what is his own.
5:150
'For a testimony of those things which were to be spoken.'
5:151
What do you say? Does God accept the testimony of a man? Yes, indeed.
5:152
For if he calls heaven and earth and the hills to witness, saying through the prophet:
5:153
'Hear, O heaven, and give ear, O earth, for the Lord has spoken,' and:
5:154
'Hear, O ye ravines, ye foundations of the earth, for the Lord has a controversy with his people;'
5:155
What is, 'For a testimony'? 'That they may be,' he says, 'witnesses, when these men act shamelessly.'
5:156
For the one cares for what is another's, but this one for what is his own.
5:157
'And the boasting of hope.'
5:158
'Of hope,' since all the good things were in hope.
5:159
And one must so hold it fast as already to boast as over things that have come to pass.
5:160
and he adds, 'Let us hold it firm unto the end;'
5:161
If then we were saved by hope, and through patience we wait for it, let us not then be vexed at present things, nor seek already the things promised for hereafter.
5:162
'For hope,' he says, 'that is seen is not hope.'
5:163
For since the good things are great, he says, we cannot receive them here in this perishable life.
5:164
For what reason then did he foretell these things to us, when he was not going to give them here? That he might revive our souls by the promise, that he might strengthen our eagerness by the pledge, that he might anoint and rouse our understanding.
5:165
For this very reason all these things have come to pass.
5:166
Let us therefore not be troubled; let no one who sees the wicked prospering be troubled.
5:167
報應不在此處,無論是惡行的還是美德的;
The recompense is not here, neither of wickedness nor of virtue;
5:168
but if anywhere there comes some recompense of both wickedness and virtue, yet it is not according to desert, but simply, as it were a foretaste of the judgment, that those who disbelieve the resurrection may at least by these things be brought to soberness here.
5:169
所以,當我們看見惡人發財致富時,不要灰心喪志;
Therefore, when we see a wicked man growing rich, let us not be cast down;
5:170
當我們看見善人遭受苦難時,也不要驚慌不安;
and when we see a good man suffering ill, let us not be troubled;
5:171
for it is there that the crowns are, and there also the punishments.
5:172
再者,惡人也不可能完全是惡的,他身上也可能有某些善的成分;
And besides, it is not possible either that the wicked man should be wholly wicked, but he too may possess certain good qualities;
5:173
nor that the good man should be wholly good, but he too may have certain faults.
5:174
所以,當惡人亨通順利時,你要知道這是要害他自己的頭;
When, therefore, the wicked man prospers, know that it is to the hurt of his own head;
5:175
for in order that, having received here the recompense for those few good deeds, he may thereafter be wholly punished yonder, for this reason he receives his reward here.
5:176
And most blessed of all is he who is punished here, that having laid aside all his sins, he may depart approved and pure and free from blame.
5:177
And Paul, teaching us this very thing, says:
5:178
'For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.'
5:179
And again, 'Deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit may be saved in that day.'
5:180
And the prophet says that 'She hath received of the Lord's hand double for her sins.'
5:181
And again David: 'Consider mine enemies, for they are multiplied above the hairs of my head, and they have hated me with an unjust hatred; and forgive all my sins.'
5:182
And again another says: 'O Lord our God, give us peace.'
5:183
然而這些經文所顯明的,是善人在此世領受了他們為罪所受的刑罰;
But these passages show the good receiving here the penalties for their sins;
5:184
do the wicked, receiving good things here, suffer complete punishment yonder? Hear Abraham saying to the rich man:
5:185
'Thou didst receive thy good things in thy lifetime, and Lazarus likewise the evil things.'
5:186
﹝甚麼好處呢?﹞因為主在這裡說「你領回了」,而不說「你領受了」,藉此顯明兩人都是按著各自所當得的而受,一個處在亨通中,另一個處在困苦中;
[What good things?] For here by saying 'Thou didst receive back,' and not 'Thou didst receive,' He shows that each suffered according to what was due, the one being in prosperity, the other in adversity;
5:187
並且說,正因如此「這人如今在這裡得安慰」;
and He says, for this reason 'This man is now comforted here';
5:188
for you see him pure of sins.
5:189
因此,當我們看見罪人在此世享福時,不要苦惱;反倒當我們自己受苦時,要歡喜;
Let us not, then, be distressed when we see sinners faring well here, but when we ourselves suffer ill, let us rejoice;
5:190
for the matter is a paying-off of sins.
5:191
因為基督曾向祂自己的門徒應許患難;
For Christ promised tribulation to His own disciples;
5:192
'All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall be persecuted.'
5:193
沒有一個高貴的鬥士在競技場上尋求沐浴,也不尋求擺滿肉食與美酒的筵席;
No noble athlete looks for baths in the arena, nor for a table heaped with meats and wine;
5:194
這不是鬥士所為,乃是懶漢所為;
this belongs not to an athlete, but to a sluggard;
5:195
for the athlete contends amid dust, oil, the heat of the sun's rays, much sweat, distress, and the straitness of the contest.
5:196
如今正是拳擊搏鬥的時候;
This is also the season for boxing;
5:197
therefore also for receiving wounds, and being bloodied, and feeling pain.
5:198
Hear what the blessed Paul says:
5:199
'So fight I, as not beating the air.'
5:200
讓我們把整個人生看作一場搏鬥,永不尋求安逸,也永不因受苦而覺得希奇;
Let us consider the whole of life to be a contest, and let us never seek rest, nor ever, when afflicted, feel it strange;
5:201
since neither does the boxer, when he is in the contest, feel it strange.
5:202
另有一個歇息的時候;
There is another season for relaxation;
5:203
through tribulation we must be made perfect.
5:204
縱然沒有逼迫,也沒有患難,卻仍有別樣的患難,就是我們每日所遭遇的;
Even if there is no persecution nor tribulation, yet there are other tribulations, those which befall us every single day;
5:205
and if we do not bear these, hardly could we bear those greater ones.
5:206
'There hath no temptation taken you,' he says, 'but such as is common to man.'
5:207
因此,讓我們求神使我們不陷入試探;
Let us therefore pray to God not to enter into temptation;
5:208
but having entered, let us bear it nobly.
5:209
因為不把自己投入危險,乃是智慧之人的表記;
For that is the mark of prudent men, not to cast themselves into dangers;
5:210
but this is the mark of the noble and philosophic, to stand firm when they have fallen into them.
5:211
所以,我們既不要輕率地把自己投入其中;
Let us therefore neither cast ourselves in rashly;
5:212
當我們被帶領、情勢呼召時,也不要退縮讓步;
nor, when we are led on and circumstances call, let us give way;
5:213
然而,若是福音的傳揚呼召我們,我們就不要推辭;
but if the preaching of the Gospel call, let us not decline it;
5:214
但若沒有緣故,沒有理由、需要,也沒有敬虔上的必要來呼召我們,我們就不要冒然衝上前去;
yet without cause, when there is no reason, no need, no necessity that calls in the service of godliness, let us not rush in;
5:215
for the thing is display, and superfluous ambition.
5:216
But if anything come to pass that harms godliness, then, even if we must undergo ten thousand deaths, let us decline nothing.
5:217
當敬虔的事都照你所願的順利進展時,不要去招惹試探;
Do not summon temptations, when the concerns of godliness proceed for you as you desire;
5:218
why draw upon yourself superfluous dangers that bring no gain? 5.
5:219
I say these things because I wish you to keep the laws of Christ, who commands us to pray not to enter into temptation, and who again commands us to take up the cross and follow Him.
5:220
For these things are not contrary to one another, but are exceedingly in harmony.
5:221
所以你當這樣預備自己,如同一個高貴的兵士:時常披戴軍裝,謹守、儆醒,常常防備仇敵;
Do you then so prepare yourself as a noble soldier: be continually in your armor, sober, watchful, ever expecting the enemy;
5:222
然而不要挑起爭戰;
yet do not breed wars;
5:223
for this belongs not to a soldier, but to a rebel.
5:224
但若敬虔的號角吹響呼召,就要立刻挺身出戰,輕看自己的性命,滿懷熱忱地投入爭戰,衝破仇敵的陣營,斬倒魔鬼的面前,豎立起得勝的紀念碑;
But if the trumpet of godliness call, straightway go forth, and despise your life, and enter with much eagerness into the contests, break the phalanx of the adversaries, cut down the face of the devil, set up the trophy;
5:225
but if godliness is in no way harmed, nor is any of our doctrines, I mean those concerning the soul, laid waste, nor are you compelled to do anything that does not please God, be not superfluous.
5:226
The Christian's life must be full of blood—of blood, not in shedding the blood of others, but in being ready to shed one's own.
5:227
所以,當這事是為基督的緣故時,讓我們甘心傾流自己的血,其熱忱如同人傾倒清水一般(因為那流遍全身的血其實也是水);
With such eagerness, then, let us shed our own blood, when it is for Christ's sake, as one would shed water (for indeed the blood that flows about the body is water);
5:228
and let us put off the flesh with as much readiness as one would put off a garment.
5:229
And this shall come to pass, if we be not bound fast to riches, nor to houses, nor be held in thrall by attachment to the things present.
5:230
For if those who live this soldier's life renounce all things, and wherever the war may call, thither they come and journey,
5:231
並且滿懷熱忱地忍受一切;
and endure all things with eagerness;
5:232
much more ought we, the soldiers of Christ, so to prepare ourselves, and to set ourselves in array against the war of the passions.
5:233
如今並沒有逼迫——但願也永不臨到;
There is no persecution now—nor may it ever come to pass;
5:234
but there is another war, that of the desire for riches, that of envy, that of the other passions.
5:235
Describing this war, Paul says:
5:236
'For we wrestle not against blood and flesh.'
5:237
This war is ever at hand.
5:238
For this reason He wishes us to stand ever armed.
5:239
'Stand therefore,' he says, 'having girded yourselves.'
5:240
這件事本身也是屬於現今的時刻;
This very thing also belongs to the present time;
5:241
and he made plain that we must always be armed.
5:242
For great is the war waged through the tongue, and great too the war through the eyes.
5:243
For this reason he begins from there to arm the soldier of Christ.
5:244
'For stand,' he says, 'having girded your loins.'
5:245
Διὰ.
Why 'with truth'? Because desire is a mockery and a lie, as David too somewhere said:
5:246
'My loins are filled with mockeries.'
5:247
The thing is no pleasure, but a shadow of pleasure.
5:248
所以他說:「用真理束上你們的腰」;
Therefore, 'Having girded,' he says, 'your loins with truth';
5:249
that is, with true pleasure, with temperance, with orderliness.
5:250
And he exhorts them to these things, knowing the absurdity of sin, and wishing that all our members be fortified all around.
5:251
'For unrighteous wrath,' he says, 'shall not be held guiltless.'
5:252
And he wishes us to be encompassed with a breastplate and a shield.
5:253
For wrath is a beast that easily springs upon us, and we need countless enclosures and partitions in order to prevail over it and hold it fast.
5:254
And for this reason especially God built up this part for us out of the bones, as it were out of certain stones, setting these round it as a support, so that it might never, by bursting or easily cleaving through, do harm to the whole living creature.
5:255
'For it is fire,' he says, 'and a great tempest, and no other member could endure this violence.'
5:256
And the sons of physicians say that for this reason the lung is spread out beneath the heart, so that the heart, being soft, might as it were leap into a kind of sponge and find rest, and not, by leaping against the resistant and hard breastbone, be injured by the frequency of its throbbings.
5:257
所以我們需要一副堅固的護心鏡,好使這野獸常保安靜;
We therefore need a strong breastplate, so as to keep this beast in continual quiet;
5:258
and we need also a helmet.
5:259
因為理性既在那裡,我們就可能由此得救——若所當行的得以成就;或滅亡——若行了所不當行的;
For since the reasoning faculty resides there, and from it we can either be saved, if what is needful takes place, or perish, if what is not needful;
5:260
'And the helmet of salvation.'
5:261
因為腦子的本性是柔軟的;
For the brain is by nature soft;
5:262
therefore it too is covered above, as with a kind of shell, by the skull.
5:263
But it becomes for us the cause of all our good things and evil things, whether it has known what is needful, or what is not such.
5:264
我們的腳和手也需要兵器;
And the feet too and the hands need weapons for us;
5:265
並非這外面的手,也非這外面的腳,乃是魂裡面的手和腳;
not these hands nor these feet, but again those of the soul;
5:266
the hands, that they may practice what is needful; the feet, that they may go where it is fitting.
5:267
Let us therefore arm ourselves in this way, and we shall be able to prevail over our enemies, and to bind on the crown of victory, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of the ages.
