For it was not to angels that He subjected the world to come, of which we speak.
4:2
But one somewhere testified, saying:
4:3
'What is man that You are mindful of him? Or the son of man that You visit him? You made him a little lower than the angels.'
4:4
我巴不得清楚知道,是否有人以相稱的殷勤聽所講的話,是否我們不是把種子撒在路旁;
I could wish to know clearly whether any listen to what is said with fitting diligence, whether we are not casting the seeds by the wayside;
4:5
for so I would carry on the teaching more eagerly.
4:6
For we will speak, even though no one listens, on account of the fear laid upon us by the Savior.
4:7
因為祂說:「你要向這百姓鄭重見證;
'For testify,' He says, 'to this people;
4:8
and though they do not hear, you shall be without blame.'
4:9
But if I were persuaded concerning your diligence, I should speak not on account of fear alone, but should do this also with pleasure.
4:10
For now, even though no one listens, even though the matter is without peril to me who fulfill my own part, yet nevertheless the labor is not accompanied with pleasure.
4:11
For what profit is there, when I am not called to account, but no one is benefited? But if some are going to give heed, we shall reap not so great a benefit from not being punished as from your progress.
4:12
How then shall I know this? By watching for some of you who do not much give heed, I shall question these when I meet them privately; and if I find any retaining what has been said—I do not say all,
4:13
因為那對你們並不十分容易;
for that is not very easy for you;
4:14
but if even a little out of much, it is plain that concerning the rest I no longer even doubt.
4:15
其實我們原該不先預告,就出其不意地臨到你們這些毫無防備的人身上;
And indeed we ought, without forewarning of this, to have fallen upon you unawares;
4:16
然而即或這樣我們能夠成功,也是值得歡喜的;
yet it is a thing to be welcomed, if even thus we should be able to succeed;
4:17
or rather, even thus I am able to fall upon you unawares.
4:18
因為我要查問你們,這我已經預先說了;
For that I will question you, I have foretold;
4:19
至於我幾時查問,我卻不使之明白;
but when I will question, I do not make clear;
4:20
for perhaps today, perhaps tomorrow, perhaps after twenty or even thirty days, perhaps after fewer, perhaps also after more.
4:21
神也照樣使我們死亡的日子成為隱而未顯的;
So too did God make the day of our death uncertain;
4:22
祂沒有叫我們清楚知道那日子是今日臨到、或明日、或滿一年之後、或多年之後,為要藉著這等候的不確定,使我們常常持守自己在美德之中;
and He has left it not clear to us whether it will come today, or tomorrow, or after a whole year, or after many years, in order that by the uncertainty of expectation we may continually hold ourselves in virtue;
4:23
and that we shall depart, He said; but when, He said no more.
4:24
So I too said that I will question, but I did not add when, wishing you to be in concern continually.
4:25
And let no one say, 'Four weeks ago and five and more I heard these things, and I cannot retain them;'
4:26
for I wish the hearer so to retain them as to have the memory unforgetting and not faded, and not to spit out the things spoken.
4:27
因為我願你們記住,不是為叫你們向我複述,乃是為叫你們自己得益處;
For I wish you to retain them, not that you may repeat them to me, but that you yourselves may gain;
4:28
and this is what I am earnest about.
4:29
But since all that had to be said for your security has been spoken by us, it is now necessary to begin the sequence of the text.
4:30
What then is it that lies before us to say today? 'For it was not to angels,' he says, 'that He subjected the world to come, of which we speak.'
4:31
Is he then speaking of some other world? It is not so, but of this very one.
4:32
For on this account he added, 'Of which we speak,' that he might not let the mind wander off and seek some other.
4:33
那麼他怎麼稱它為「將來的」呢?正如他在別處也說:「亞當乃是那將來之人的預像」,這是在羅馬書裡論到亞當與基督時說的,就著亞當的時代而言,稱那按肉體而生的基督為「將來的」(因為祂確是將要來的);
How then does he call it 'to come'? Just as elsewhere also he says, 'Who is a figure of Him that was to come,' speaking of Adam and Christ in the Epistle to the Romans, calling Christ according to the flesh 'to come' with respect to the times of Adam (for indeed He was to come);
4:34
so also now, since he had said, 'And when He brings the firstborn into the world,' lest you should suppose that he speaks of some other world, it is confirmed from many other places, and also from his very calling it 'to come.'
4:35
This world, then, which was to be, He subjected not to angels, but to Christ.
4:36
他說,這話是論到子而說的,這乃是顯而易見的;
And that it was spoken concerning the Son, he says, is plain;
4:37
for neither could anyone say that it was concerning angels.
4:38
Then he brings forward yet another testimony, and says:
4:39
'But one somewhere testified, saying:'
4:40
Why did he not name the prophet, but conceal his name? He does the same thing in other testimonies as well.
4:41
And again, when he brings the Firstborn into the world, he says:
4:42
And let all the angels of God worship him.
4:43
And again, 'I will be to him a Father.'
4:44
And of the angels indeed he says:
4:45
'Who makes his angels spirits.'
4:46
But to the Son he says, 'And you, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth.'
4:47
And someone somewhere solemnly testified, saying:
4:48
And this very thing, I suppose—the concealing and not stating who it was that spoke the testimony, but rather introducing it as something in common circulation and well known—is the mark of one who is showing that they were exceedingly versed in the Scriptures.
4:49
'What is man, that you are mindful of him? or the son of man, that you visit him? You made him a little lower than the angels;'
4:50
'you crowned him with glory and honour, and set him over the works of your hands;'
4:51
'you put all things in subjection under his feet.'
4:52
這些話縱然是指著普遍的人類說的,然而按著肉體說,卻更恰當地合乎基督;
Now even if these words were spoken concerning humanity in general, nevertheless they would more properly fit Christ according to the flesh;
4:53
for the phrase, 'You put all things in subjection under his feet,' belongs rather to him than to us.
4:54
For the Son of God visited us when we were nothing, and having taken up what was ours and united it to himself, he became higher than all.
4:55
'For in that he put all things in subjection under him,' he says, 'he left nothing that is not put under him.'
4:56
'But now we do not yet see all things put under him.'
4:57
And what he means is of this sort:
4:58
Since he had said, 'Till I make your enemies your footstool,' and it was likely that they were still distressed, then after inserting a few things in between, he added this testimony to confirm the former.
4:59
免得他們說:「我們既受了這許多的苦,他怎麼把仇敵放在他腳下了呢?」他在前面已經充分地暗示過這事了;
For lest they should say, 'How has he put the enemies under his feet, when we have suffered so many things?'—he had already sufficiently hinted at it in the former passage;
4:60
τὸ γὰρ , Ἕως , οὐ τὸ .
因為「等」這字,並不表明立時發生的事,乃是表明在時候要成的事;
for the word 'Till' did not indicate what happens immediately, but what takes place in time;
4:61
and here he pursues it further.
4:62
'For do not,' he says, 'because they are not yet made subject, suppose that they are not being made subject at all;'
4:63
因為他們必須被服,這是顯然的;
for that they must be made subject is clear;
4:64
並且這預言正是為此說的;
and indeed the prophecy was spoken for this very reason;
4:65
'For in that he put all things in subjection under him,' he says, 'he left nothing that is not put under him.'
4:66
How then are not all things put in subjection? Because they are about to be put in subjection.
4:67
If therefore all things ought to be made subject, but are not yet made subject, do not be distressed, nor be troubled.
4:68
因為倘若在末了臨到、萬有都已被服之時,你才受這些苦,你憂傷倒是合理的;
For if, when the end had come and all things had been made subject, you suffered these things, you would rightly grieve;
4:69
but as it is, we do not yet see all things put under him; the King has not yet fully prevailed.
4:70
Why then are you troubled, though you suffer ill? The proclamation has not yet reached all; it is not yet the time for the complete subjection.
4:71
Then again another consolation:
4:72
He who is destined to have all put in subjection to him himself died and suffered ten thousand things.
4:73
'But we see Jesus,' he says, 'who was made a little lower than the angels, because of the suffering of death.'
4:74
Then again the good things: 'crowned with glory and honour.'
4:75
你看他怎樣把一切都合在他身上?因為連「一點」這話也更合乎他,就是那只在陰間三日的,而不合乎我們這長久朽壞的人;
Do you see how he fitted everything to him? For even the phrase 'a little' would fit him rather, who was in Hades three days only, and not us who are corrupted for a long time;
4:76
likewise also the phrase 'with glory and honour' will fit him far more than us.
4:77
Again he reminds them of the cross, being eager to accomplish these two things: both to show his care for them, and to persuade them to bear all things nobly, looking to the Teacher.
4:78
For if he who is worshipped by angels, he says, endured to be a little lower than the angels for your sake,
4:79
how much more ought you, who are lower than the angels, to bear all things for his sake.
4:80
接著他表明,十字架乃是榮耀尊貴;
Then he shows that the cross is glory and honour;
4:81
just as he himself also calls it glory, saying:
4:82
'The hour has come, that the Son of man should be glorified.'
4:83
If then he calls the things suffered for the servants glory, how much more should you the things suffered for the Master.
4:84
你看見十字架的果子何等豐盛麼?不要懼怕這事;
Do you see how great is the fruit of the cross? Do not fear the matter;
4:85
for it seems gloomy to you, yet it brings forth ten thousand blessings.
4:86
From these things he shows the benefit of temptation.
4:87
'That by the grace of God he should taste death for every man.'
4:88
他實在是因著神向我們所施的恩,才受了這些苦;
And he indeed suffered these things because of the grace of God toward us;
4:89
'He that spared not his own Son,' he says, 'but delivered him up for us all.'
4:90
For what reason? He did not owe this to us, but did it out of grace.
4:91
And again in the Epistle to the Romans he says, 'Much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, has abounded unto the many.'
4:92
'That by the grace of God he should taste death for every man;'
4:93
不單為信的人,也為全世界;
not for the faithful only, but also for the whole world;
4:94
for he himself died for all.
4:95
But what if not all believed? He has fulfilled his own part.
4:96
'He should taste death for every man.'
4:97
For as one who truly tasted, having thus made a brief interval in it, he immediately rose again.
4:98
他用「受死的苦」這話,指出真實的死;
By 'the suffering of death' he signified the real death;
4:99
and by 'better than the angels' he made plain the resurrection.
4:100
正如醫生本不需要嘗那為病人所豫備的食物,卻因顧惜病人,就先自己嘗,好使病人壯膽,放心大膽地進食;
For just as a physician, though having no need to taste of the food prepared for the sick man, out of his care for him first tastes it himself, in order to persuade the sick man to take courage and boldly venture upon the food;
4:101
so also Christ, since all men dreaded death, in persuading them to make bold against death, himself also tasted of it, though having no need.
4:102
'For the prince of this world comes,' he says, 'and finds nothing in me.'
4:103
Thus both the phrase 'by grace' and the phrase 'that he should taste death for every man' establish this.
4:104
'For it became him, for whom are all things, and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.'
4:105
Here he is speaking about the Father.
4:106
Do you see how the phrase 'by whom' again fits him? He would not have used it, if indeed it belonged to inferiority and were proper to the Son alone.
4:107
And what he means is of this sort:
4:108
He has done things, he says, worthy of his love toward mankind, by showing the Firstborn more illustrious than all, and by setting him, like a noble athlete who surpasses the rest, as an example to the others.
4:109
'The author of their salvation.'
4:110
That is to say, the Author of salvation.
4:111
Do you see how great the interval is? He too is a Son, and we also are sons; but He saves, while we are saved.
4:112
But He is the one who saves, while we are those who are saved.
4:113
Do you see how he both draws us together and sets us apart? 'In bringing many sons,' he says, 'unto glory.'
4:114
'The Author of their salvation.'
4:115
Therefore the sufferings are a perfecting, and a cause of salvation.
4:116
Do you see that to suffer ill is not the mark of those who have been forsaken? And if God honored the Son with this above all—by leading Him through sufferings—
4:117
then in truth, compared with making the world and bringing it into being out of nothing, that He should take flesh and suffer the things He suffered is by far the greater.
4:118
And so this indeed belongs to His love toward mankind, but that other is much more so.
4:119
And showing this very thing himself also, he says:
4:120
'That in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His kindness, and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.'
4:121
'For it became Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons unto glory, to make the Author of their salvation perfect through sufferings.'
4:122
'For it became Him,' he says—Him who is the guardian and who brought all things into being—to give up the Son for the salvation of the rest, the one on behalf of the many.
4:123
But he did not put it so; rather, 'to make perfect through sufferings,' showing that he who suffers on another's behalf does not benefit that one alone, but himself also becomes more glorious and more perfect.
4:124
And this he says with a view to the faithful, encouraging them.
4:125
For Christ too was then glorified, when He suffered.
4:126
然而我說祂「得了榮耀」時,你不要以為有甚麼榮耀加添給祂;
But when I say that He 'was glorified,' do not suppose that any addition of glory came to Him;
4:127
for that glory which belongs to His nature He had always, having received no addition.
4:128
'For both He that sanctifies,' he says, 'and they who are sanctified, are all of one.'
4:129
'For which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren.'
4:130
Behold again how he draws them together, honoring them and consoling them and making them brethren of Christ, in this respect.
4:131
Then again, guarding his statement, and showing that he speaks of what is according to the flesh, he added: 'He that sanctifies, and they who are sanctified.'
4:132
Do you see how great the interval is? For He sanctifies, but we are sanctified.
4:133
And above he had said, 'the Author of their salvation.'
4:134
For there is one God, of whom are all things.
4:135
'For which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren.'
4:136
Do you see how again he shows the superiority? For by saying:
4:137
Οὐκ .
'He is not ashamed,' he shows that it is not from the nature of the thing, but from the tender affection of Him who—being all—is not ashamed, and from His great humility.
4:138
For though we are of one, yet He sanctifies, while we are sanctified.
4:139
並且祂是出於父,作為真正的兒子,就是出於祂的本質;
And He is of the Father, as a genuine Son, that is, of His very substance;
4:140
but we are as a creature, that is, out of things that were not.
4:141
'He is not ashamed to call them brethren,' saying:
4:142
'I will declare Thy name unto my brethren.'
4:143
For having put on the flesh, He put on also the brotherhood, and together with the flesh the brotherhood entered in as well.
4:144
這一句他固然引得合宜;
But this indeed he brings forward fittingly;
4:145
but the words, 'I will put my trust in Him,' what do they mean? And what follows also is fittingly spoken:
4:146
'Behold, I and the children whom God hath given me.'
4:147
For just as here He shows Himself to be a father, so there a brother:
4:148
'I will declare,' he says, 'Thy name unto my brethren.'
4:149
And again he shows the superiority, and the great interval, by what follows:
4:150
'Forasmuch then as the children,' he says, 'are partakers of blood and flesh.'
4:151
'Do you see wherein lies the likeness?' he says—according to the flesh.
4:152
'He also Himself likewise partook of the same.'
4:153
Let all the heretics be ashamed, let them hide their faces—those who say that He came in appearance and not in truth.
4:154
因為他並非僅僅說「祂有分於這些」,就此緘默;
For he did not say merely that 'He partook of these,' and then keep silent;
4:155
其實即便他這樣說,也已足夠了;
and yet even if he had spoken so, it would have been sufficient;
4:156
but he indicated something else, something greater, by adding, 'likewise.'
4:157
'Not in fantasy nor in a mere image,' he says, 'but in truth;'
4:158
since otherwise the word 'likewise' is not preserved.
4:159
Then, having shown the brotherhood, he sets down also the cause of the dispensation:
4:160
'That through death,' he says, 'He might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.'
4:161
他在此顯明那奇妙之事:魔鬼藉以得勝的,正是藉著這同一件事被擊敗;那對他而言曾是對抗普世的強大武器——就是死——基督卻用這武器擊打了他;
Here he shows the marvelous thing: that by that whereby the devil had prevailed, by this same he was overthrown; and the very weapon which was mighty for him against the world—death—with this Christ smote him;
4:162
and he sets forth the greatness of the power of Him who conquered.
4:163
Do you see how great a good death has wrought? 'And deliver them,' he says, 'who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.'
4:164
'Why do you shudder?' he says. 'Why do you dread him who has been brought to nothing? He is no longer terrible, but has been trampled underfoot, despised; he is worthless and of no account.'
4:165
「那些一生因怕死而為奴僕的人」是甚麼意思呢?他說:「這是甚麼意思呢?」意思是:凡懼怕死的,就是奴僕,為著免於一死,甚麼都肯順服;
And what does 'who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage' mean? 'What is this?' he says. It is that he who fears death is a slave, and submits to everything for the sake of not dying;
4:166
或是指這意思:他說,眾人都作了死的奴僕,並因死尚未被解除而受其挾制;
or this, that all were slaves of death, he says, and were held fast by the fact that it had not yet been loosed;
4:167
or, [if not this,] that men lived their whole life in perpetual fear.
4:168
因為他們常常盼望著要死、又懼怕死,這懼怕既總與他們同在,他們就不能領略任何快樂的感受;
For always expecting to die, and dreading death, they were unable to take the perception of any pleasure, this fear being ever present with them;
4:169
他在此顯明:那些受患難、被驅逐、遭逼迫、被剝奪家鄉、產業和其餘一切的人,反倒比從前那些生活奢華、未曾遭遇這等事、豐足興旺的人,過得更為喜樂、更為自由;
He shows here that those who are afflicted, driven out, persecuted, deprived of country and property and all the rest, pass their days more pleasantly and more freely than those of old who lived in luxury, who suffered no such thing, who abounded in prosperity;
4:170
seeing that the latter were, all their lifetime, under this fear and were slaves, while the former are set free from it, and laugh at that very thing at which the others shuddered.
4:171
因為這正如:若有人用許多奢侈的享受去豢養一個將被拉去處死、且時刻等候此事的囚犯;
For just as if one were to fatten with much luxury a prisoner about to be led away to death and ever expecting this;
4:172
such a thing was death in the old time.
4:173
But now the same thing has come to pass as if one, having cast out that fear, should exhort him to contend along with the enjoyment, and, setting before him the contest, should promise to lead him no longer to death, but to a kingdom.
4:174
Of which sort, then, would you have chosen to be—of those fattened in the prison while daily awaiting the sentence, or of those
4:175
多多角力、甘心勞苦,好戴上那國度冠冕的人呢?你看見他如何提升了他們的心靈、使他們高飛嗎?他不但顯明死已被止息,更顯明藉此那另一位——就是那常向我們發動不肯罷休之戰、並將此顯露出來的——我是說魔鬼,也已被廢除;
who contend much and toil willingly, so as to bind on the diadem of the kingdom? Do you see how he lifted up their soul and made them soar aloft? And he shows not only that death has been stopped, but that through this that other one too—who is ever waging implacable war against us and displaying it, I mean the devil—has been brought to nothing;
4:176
for he who does not fear death is outside the tyranny of the devil.
4:177
'For skin for skin, yea, all that a man hath will he give for his life;'
4:178
when a man judges that he should despise even this, whose slave will he be thereafter? He dreads no one, he fears no one, he is above all, and freer than all.
4:179
For he who despises his own life, much more does he despise other things.
4:180
But when the devil finds a soul of this kind, he will be able to work in it none of the things that are his own.
4:181
For tell me, what will he threaten? Loss of money, and dishonour, and banishment from one's country? But these are small things to him who counts not even his own soul precious, according to the blessed Paul.
4:182
你看見嗎?祂在除滅死亡的暴政的同時,也一併瓦解了魔鬼的權勢。因為那已曉得就復活之事千般思辯的人,怎會懼怕死亡呢?此後又怎會戰兢呢?所以你們不要煩惱,說:「我們為何遭受這樣那樣的苦?」因為勝利正是這樣才顯得更加輝煌;
Do you see that in casting out the tyranny of death, He at the same time also destroyed the strength of the devil? For how should he who has learned to reason ten thousand things concerning the resurrection fear death? How then should he any longer tremble? Do not therefore be vexed, saying, 「Why have we suffered this and that?」 For thus the victory becomes the more glorious;
4:183
and it would not have been glorious, unless He had destroyed death by death.
4:184
But this is the wonder, that He overcame him by the very things through which he had prevailed, showing that His resourcefulness and skill are everywhere manifest.
4:185
Let us not, then, betray the gift that has been given to us.
4:186
「For we have not received,」 he says, 「a spirit of cowardice, but a spirit of power and of love and of self-control.」
4:187
Let us therefore stand nobly, laughing death to scorn.
4:188
But indeed there came upon me an occasion to groan bitterly, at the thought of whither Christ has raised us up, but whither we have brought ourselves down.
4:189
因為當我看見市場上的捶胸慟哭、他們為離世的人所發的哀號、那些號啕、以及其他種種不成體統的舉止,請相信我,我在旁觀的希臘人、猶太人、異端者面前感到羞愧,簡直是在一切因此嗤笑我們的人面前感到羞愧;
For when I see the wailings in the marketplace, the lamentations which they make over those departing this life, the shrieks, and the other unseemly behaviour—believe me, I am ashamed before the Greeks and the Jews and the heretics who look on, and before all, in short, who on this account laugh us to scorn;
4:190
for whatever else I may say hereafter, I shall be speaking to no purpose when I discourse on the resurrection.
4:191
為甚麼呢?因為希臘人所注意的,不是我所說的話,乃是你們所行的事;
Why so? Because the Greeks give heed not to the things said by me, but to the things done by you;
4:192
這樣的人,甚麼時候才能輕看死亡呢?他連看一眼別人的屍身也不能忍受。保羅所說的話是美好的,美好的,配得上諸天,也配得上神對人的慈愛;
When will any of these be able to despise death, seeing that he cannot even bear to look upon another who has died? Fair are the things spoken by Paul, fair, and worthy of the heavens, and of God's love for man;
4:193
for what does he say? 「And He shall deliver those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.」
4:194
但你們卻不容這些事被人相信,反倒藉著你們的行為與這些真理相爭;
But you do not allow these things to be believed, warring against them by your deeds;
4:195
although God has raised up many bulwarks toward this end, that He might do away with this evil custom.
4:196
因為請告訴我,那些明亮的火炬是為何意呢?我們不是像護送競賽的勇士一樣送他們出去嗎?那些詩歌又是為何呢?我們不是在榮耀神,感謝祂如今已為離世的人加了冠冕,已使他脫離勞苦,已除去恐懼將他存留在自己身邊嗎?詩歌不正是為此嗎?頌唱聖詩不正是為此嗎?這一切都是喜樂之人的表記;
For tell me, what mean the bright torches? Do we not escort them forth as champions? And what mean the hymns? Do we not glorify God, and give thanks that He has now crowned him who has departed, that He has freed him from his labours, that having cast out fear He keeps him with Himself? Is it not for this the hymns? Is it not for this the singing of psalms? All these are the marks of those who rejoice;
4:197
「For is any cheerful?」 he says, 「let him sing psalms.」
4:198
But the Greeks give no heed to these things.
4:199
「Do not,」 he says, 「point me to the man who plays the philosopher while outside the suffering; for that is nothing great nor wonderful; but show me the man who plays the philosopher in the very midst of the suffering, and then I will believe in the resurrection.」
4:200
至於那些沉溺於今世的婦人如此行,這並不足為奇;
And that women immersed in this life should do this is nothing to wonder at;
4:201
然而這也仍是可怕的;
and yet even that too is terrible;
4:202
因為連她們也被要求持守同樣的修為;
for even they are required to show the same self-discipline;
4:203
「But concerning those who are asleep I would not have you to be ignorant, that you sorrow not, even as the rest who have no hope.」
4:204
It was not to monks that he wrote these things, nor to perpetual virgins, but also to women of the world, who had entered into marriage, and to those engaged in worldly affairs.
4:205
雖然如此,這尚且不算太可怕;
Nevertheless, this is not so terrible;
4:206
but when someone, whether woman or man, who professes to have been crucified to the world—the man tearing out his hair, the woman wailing aloud—what is more unseemly than this? Believe me when I say it:
4:207
if things were done as they ought to be, such persons ought for a long time to be kept away from the thresholds of the church.
4:208
For those who are truly worthy of mourning are these: those who fear and shudder at death,
4:209
those who still fear and shudder, those who disbelieve the resurrection.
4:210
「But I do not disbelieve the resurrection,」 she says, 「rather I am seeking the accustomed presence.」
4:211
Why then, tell me, when he goes abroad, and on a long journey, do you not do the same? 「But I weep then too,」 she says, 「and I lament, longing for him.」
4:212
But that is indeed the mark of one who longs for the accustomed presence, whereas this is the mark of one who has despaired of his return.
4:213
你要思想在那時候你所唱誦的是甚麼;
Consider what you chant at that time;
4:214
「Return, O my soul, unto your rest, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you;」
4:215
and again, 「I will not fear evil, for You are with me;」
4:216
and again, 「You are my refuge from the affliction that encompasses me.」
4:217
Consider what these psalms mean.
4:218
But you do not give heed; rather you are as one drunk with grief.
4:219
Even at the funerals of others take careful note, so that you may have a remedy for your own.
4:220
「我的心哪,你要仍歸安息,因為耶和華用厚恩待你」——你口說這話,卻流淚嗎?這豈不是做戲嗎?這豈不是假冒為善嗎?因為你若真信你所說的話,你的哀哭便是多餘的;
「Return, O my soul, unto your rest, for the Lord has dealt bountifully with you」—do you say this, and shed tears? Is this not play-acting? Is this not hypocrisy? For if you truly believe the things you say, you mourn to no purpose;
4:221
but if you are jesting and playing the hypocrite and think these things to be but fables, why then do you chant at all? Why do you even tolerate those who are present? Why do you not drive away those who sing? 「But this,」 she says, 「is the act of madmen.」
4:222
但隨著時日推移,我要更嚴厲地處置這事;
But as time goes on, I shall deal with the matter more sternly;
4:223
for I greatly fear lest by this means some grievous disease should creep into the Church.
4:224
那麼,這種捶胸慟哭,我們以後再來糾正;
This wailing, then, let us set right hereafter;
4:225
but for the present I charge and solemnly testify both to rich and poor, both to women and to men.
4:226
May it indeed be granted that you all depart this life without mourning, and that, according to the fitting law of nature, fathers grown old be escorted forth by their sons, and mothers by their daughters and grandchildren and great-grandchildren, in a ripe old age, and that nowhere may there be an untimely death.
4:227
但願這事果真成就,這也是我所祈求的;我也勸勉各位主領的長老和你們眾人,要彼此代求神,並將這作為共同的祈願;
May this indeed come to pass, and this I pray for; and I exhort both the presiding elders and all of you to beseech God on one another's behalf, and to make this a common prayer;
4:228
但倘若——但願不至於此,也願永不臨到——有某種苦澀的死亡發生(我稱它為苦澀,並不是就其本性而言;
but if—which God forbid, and may it never befall—some bitter death should occur (and I call it bitter, not in its own nature;
4:229
因為死亡如今已不再是苦澀的了;
for death is no longer bitter;
4:230
因為它與睡眠並無分別;
for it differs in nothing from sleep;
4:231
but I call it bitter with respect to our own disposition)—
4:232
if then this should happen, and some should hire these wailing women, believe me when I say it—for I will not speak otherwise, but as I truly feel—
4:233
I will keep that person a long time away from the church, as an idolater.
4:234
For if Paul calls the covetous man an idolater, much more the one who brings in the practices of idolaters over a believer.
4:235
因為請告訴我,你召請長老和唱詩的人是為甚麼呢?豈不是為要安慰、為要尊榮那離世的人嗎?那你為何又羞辱他呢?你為何把他當作眾人觀看的把戲呢?你為何戲耍,好像在戲台上一樣呢?我們前來論述復活之事,藉著對那離世之人所表的尊榮,教導眾人,就是連那些尚未受打擊的人,也要在這樣的事若臨到時英勇地承擔;
For to what end, tell me, do you summon the elders and those who sing? Is it not to console, is it not to honour the departed? Why then do you outrage him? Why do you hold him up as a spectacle? Why do you play, as though on a stage? We come discoursing on the resurrection, instructing all, even those not yet stricken, through the honour shown to that one, to bear it nobly, should any such thing ever befall;
4:236
but you bring in, for your own part, those who tear down what is ours?
4:237
還有甚麼比這樣的譏笑和嘲弄更壞呢?還有甚麼比這樣的自相矛盾更沉重呢?你們當羞愧,當愧疚;
What is worse than this laughter and this mockery? What is more grievous than this inconsistency? Be ashamed and abashed;
4:238
但你們若不肯,我們在我們這一方面,斷不容忍把這樣對教會有害的惡俗引進來;
but if you will not, we for our part will not endure to bring in such customs, so ruinous to the church;
4:239
「For them that sin,」 he says, 「rebuke before all.」
4:240
並且藉著你們,我們也禁止那些可憐困苦的婦人,永不許她們前來參加信徒的葬禮,免得我們真的迫使她們去哀哭自己的禍患,並教訓她們不要在別人的喪事上行這些事,倒要為自己的苦難哀傷;
And to those wretched and miserable women too we forbid, through you, ever to come to the funerals of the faithful, lest we truly compel them to bewail their own evils, and teach them to do these things not among strangers, but rather to lament their own calamities;
4:241
for even a loving father, when he has an unruly son, admonishes not only him not to associate with wicked companions, but also frightens those companions themselves.
4:242
Behold then, I admonish both you and, through you, those women too, that neither should you summon such women, nor should they come.
4:243
但願這話果真能成就更多的事,這警戒也能奏效;
And may the word indeed accomplish something further, and the threat prevail;
4:244
but if—which God forbid—we should be despised, we shall then be compelled to carry the threat into action, disciplining you by the laws of the church,
4:245
and those women as is fitting for them.
4:246
But if anyone, acting insolently, despises this, let him hear Christ saying even now:
4:247
「If your brother sin against you, go, rebuke him between you and him alone;」
4:248
「but if he will not be persuaded, take with you one or two;」
4:249
「and if even so he contradicts you, tell it to the Church.」
4:250
And if he refuses to hear even the Church, let him be to you as the heathen and the tax collector.
4:251
But if He commands that the one who sins against me, when he will not be persuaded, be so turned away,
4:252
namely, him who sins against himself,
4:253
then how ought I to stand toward God? You yourselves be the judges.
4:254
For you condemn us, seeing that we do not deal gently with you.
4:255
But if anyone despises the bonds that come from us, let Christ again instruct him, saying:
4:256
凡你們在地上所捆綁的,在天上也要捆綁;
Whatsoever you shall bind on earth shall be bound in heaven;
4:257
and whatsoever you shall loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.
4:258
For even though we are wretched and of no account and worthy to be despised—as indeed we are worthy—yet we do not avenge ourselves, nor requite anger, but rather take thought for your salvation.
4:259
Have reverence, I beseech you, and be ashamed.
4:260
For if a man endures a friend who bears down upon him more severely than is fitting, considering the friend's purpose, and that he does this out of goodwill and not from arrogance,
4:261
how much more should he endure a teacher when he rebukes—a teacher who does not even say these things on his own authority, nor as one in the rank of a ruler, but as one in the rank of a guardian.
4:262
For we do not say these things because we wish to display authority.
4:263
For how could we, who pray never even to come to the trial of them? Rather it is because we grieve and are torn with anguish for you.
4:264
Forgive us, then, and let no one despise the bonds of the Church.
4:265
For it is not a man who binds, but Christ, who has given us this authority and makes men lords of so great an honor.
4:266
至於我們,我們願意用這權柄來釋放;
For our part, we wish to use this authority for loosing;
4:267
or rather, we do not even wish to have need of that.
4:268
For we desire that no one be a prisoner in our charge.
4:269
We are not so miserable and wretched, even if we are indeed of very little account.
4:270
但我們若被迫如此行,還求你們寬恕;
But if we should be compelled, forgive us;
4:271
for it is not willingly nor of our own desire, but rather grieving over you who are bound, that we cast the bonds around you.
4:272
But if anyone should despise these things, the time of judgment will come, which will teach him.
4:273
The rest I do not wish to say, lest I wound your minds.
4:274
因為我們首先祈求,不至於到那不得已的地步;
For we, first of all, pray that it may not come to necessity;
4:275
but if we should come to it, we fulfill our own part—we cast the bonds around.
4:276
And if anyone should break these asunder, I have done my own part and am henceforth without blame; but your reckoning will be with Him who commanded me to bind.
4:277
For suppose, while the king sits enthroned, one of the bodyguards standing by is commanded to bind and cast bonds around one of those in the ranks, and that man not only thrusts him away but also shatters the bonds—it is not the bodyguard who has suffered the outrage, but much rather the king who gave the command.
4:278
For if He makes His own the things that are done to the faithful, then when you insult those appointed to teach, He will be affected much more as though He Himself were being insulted.
4:279
But God forbid that any of those in this church should come to the necessity of these bonds.
4:280
For just as it is a good thing not to sin,
4:281
so it is profitable to bear rebuke.
4:282
所以我們要忍受責備,並要竭力不去犯罪;
Let us therefore bear the rebuke, and let us be earnest not to sin;
4:283
and if we should sin, let us bear the reproof.
4:284
因為正如不受擊打是美好的,但這事若臨到了,把良藥敷在傷口上便是有益的;
For just as it is a good thing not to be struck, yet if this should happen, it is profitable that the remedy be applied to the wound;
4:285
yet God forbid that any should have need of such remedies.
4:286
But we are persuaded of better things concerning you, things that belong to salvation, even though we speak in this way.
4:287
We have spoken more severely for the sake of greater safety.
4:288
For it is better that I be suspected by you of being rash and harsh and self-willed, than that you should do the things that are not pleasing to God.
4:289
And we trust in God that this rebuke will not be without profit to you, but that you will be so changed that these words will be spent upon your praises and commendations.
4:290
And may it be granted you to live according to what is pleasing to God, that we all may be counted worthy to attain
4:291
to those good things which God has promised to those who love Him, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
