'Through faith we understand that the ages were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.'
22:2
「亞伯因著信,獻祭與神,比該隱所獻的更美,因此便得了稱義的見證,就是神指著他禮物所作的見證;
'By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God bearing witness of his gifts;
22:3
and by it, being dead, he yet speaks.'
22:4
The matter of faith requires a noble and vigorous soul, one that surpasses all the things of sense, and passes beyond the weakness of human reasonings.
22:5
For it is not otherwise possible to become a believer, unless a man lift himself above the common habit of mind.
22:6
Since therefore the souls of the Hebrews had been enfeebled, and though they had begun from faith, yet by reason of their circumstances—I mean their sufferings and afflictions—they were now growing faint-hearted and small-souled and were being shaken, first of all he exhorted them from their own experience, saying: 'Call to mind the former days.'
22:7
從那說「義人必因信得生」的經文;
from the Scripture which says, 'But the just shall live by faith';
22:8
then from reasonings, having said, 'Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.'
22:9
But now again from the forefathers, those great men, those admirable ones, all but saying:
22:10
If, where good things were close at hand, all were saved by faith, much more shall we be.
22:11
For when the soul finds a partner in the same things, it is at rest and takes breath.
22:12
This too may be seen coming to pass in the matter of faith, and this too in affliction.
22:13
'That I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith which is in one another.'
22:14
因為人類極其多疑,連對自己也不能有把握,對於自己所決斷的事也常懷懼怕;
For the human race is exceedingly distrustful, and cannot have confidence in itself, and is fearful concerning the things it decides upon;
22:15
since it has, and has much, anxiety for the opinion of the many.
22:16
What then does Paul do? He exhorts them from what went before, and, before these things, from the common notion.
22:17
For since faith was at that time slandered as being a thing incapable of proof, and rather a matter of deception, on this account he shows
22:18
that the greatest things are accomplished through faith, and not through reasonings.
22:19
And how does he show this, tell me? By saying, 'Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.'
22:20
It is plain, he says, that God made the things that are out of things that are not, the things that appear out of things that appear not, the things that subsist out of things that had no subsistence.
22:21
But whence is it plain that He also made this by a word? For reasoning suggests nothing of the kind, but rather the contrary: that the things not seen come from the things which appear.
22:22
正因如此,那些哲學家才說沒有什麼是從無有而生的,因為他們是屬魂的人(屬血氣的人),絲毫不肯讓步於信心;
For this reason especially the philosophers say that nothing comes out of things that are not, being men of the soul (natural men), and yielding nothing to faith;
22:23
然而每當他們說出什麼偉大而高尚的話時,他們自己也照樣被抓住了破綻,因為他們也是把那話交託於信心;
yet they too are caught nevertheless, whenever they say anything great and noble, for they entrust it to faith;
22:24
譬如他們說,神是無始的,也是非受生的;
as, for instance, they say that God is without beginning and unbegotten;
22:25
for reasoning does not suggest this, but the contrary.
22:26
But observe for me also their great folly.
22:27
他們說神是無始的;
They say that God is without beginning;
22:28
which is far more wonderful than the making of things out of what is not.
22:29
For to say that God is without beginning, that He is unbegotten, neither begotten by Himself nor by another, is more perplexing than to say that God made the things that are out of things that are not.
22:30
因為在造物這事上,有許多可信的地方;
For here there are many things that are credible;
22:31
譬如:祂造了某物,這受造之物有一個開端,並且它確實是被造出來的;
as, for instance, that He made something, that the thing made had a beginning, that it was made at all;
22:32
but there, the being self-existent, unbegotten, having neither beginning nor time—do not these things need faith, tell me? Yet he did not set down this, which was far greater, but the lesser, saying:
22:33
'Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God.'
22:34
Whence then, sayest thou, is it plain that God made all things by a word? For reasoning does not suggest this, nor was anyone present when these things came to be.
22:35
For the perception of it is a work of faith.
22:36
Wherefore also he thus said, 'Through faith we understand.'
22:37
請問,我們因著信領悟什麼呢?就是那所看見的,並不是從顯然之物造出來的;
What do we understand by faith, say? That the things which are seen were not made of things which appear;
22:38
Having spoken of what is common, he next exercises the point in the case of particular persons.
22:39
For indeed a glorious man is worth as much as the whole world.
22:40
This at least he also hinted at afterwards.
22:41
For since he had set it in the case of persons, a hundred or two hundred, then saw the number to be small in quantity, he next says:
22:42
'By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain.'
22:43
Observe whom he places first: the one who suffered grievously, and that too from a brother whom he had in no way wronged, but was envied on God's account.
22:44
For ye also, he says, have suffered the same things at the hands of your own countrymen.
22:45
At the same time he also shows that they too are grudged and envied.
22:46
那人尊崇了神,卻為著他所尊崇神的緣故而死,並且尚未得著復活;
That man honored God, and died for the very things wherein he honored Him, and had not yet obtained the resurrection;
22:47
but his eagerness was manifest, and the things on his part were done, while the things on God's part had not yet been brought to him.
22:48
And by 'a more excellent sacrifice' here he means the more honorable, the more splendid, the more necessary.
22:49
他說,我們也不能說這祭沒有蒙悅納;
And we cannot say, he says, that it was not accepted;
22:50
for He did accept it, and said to Cain:
22:51
'Hast thou not sinned, if thou hast rightly offered, but not rightly divided?'
22:52
Therefore Abel both rightly offered and rightly divided.
22:53
然而,為著這些事,他所得的報償是什麼呢?他被弟兄的手所殺;
But nevertheless, in return for these things, what recompense did he receive? He was slain by a brother's hand;
22:54
and the condemnation which the father underwent because of sin, this the son who had done rightly received first, and he suffered things so much the more grievous inasmuch as it was from a brother, and he was the first.
22:55
而且他成就這些事,並沒有仰望任何人為榜樣;
And these things he accomplished with his eye on no one;
22:56
for on whom did he look, and thus honor God? On his father and his mother? But they had insulted him in return for his benefits.
22:57
But on his brother? But this one too dishonored him.
22:58
So that from himself he found out the good.
22:59
And he who was worthy of such great honor, what then does he suffer? He is put to death.
22:60
Then he adds yet another commendation, saying:
22:61
'By which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts;'
22:62
'and by it, being dead, he yet speaketh.'
22:63
他又是怎樣被見證為義的呢?據說有火降下,將那些祭物收取了;
And how else was he witnessed to be righteous? It is said that fire came down and took up the sacrifices;
22:64
for instead of saying, 'The Lord looked upon Abel and upon his sacrifices,' it says, 'And He set them on fire.'
22:65
He, then, who had both by words and by deeds borne witness to the righteous man, and seeing him slain on His own account, did not avenge but permitted it.
22:66
但你們的情形卻不是這樣;
But your case is not such;
22:67
for how should it be, seeing that ye have both prophets and examples, and exhortations
22:68
beyond number, and signs and wonders that have taken place? So that that was truly faith.
22:69
For what wonders did that man see, that he should believe there would be some recompense of good things for him? Did he not choose virtue from faith alone? What is the meaning of, 'And by it, being dead, he yet speaketh'? That he might not cast them into great despair, he shows that Abel enjoyed a recompense in part.
22:70
怎麼說呢?他說,為他所施的眷顧是極大的;
How? The care taken on his behalf, he says, is great;
22:71
因為他說「他仍舊說話」,就是暗示這事;
for this he hinted at by saying, 'And he yet speaketh';
22:72
就是說,該隱雖殺了他,卻沒有把他的榮耀和尊榮也一同殺滅;
that is to say, He slew him, but did not slay together with him his glory and his honor;
22:73
therefore neither shall ye die.
22:74
For by how much the more grievous things one suffers, by so much the greater is the glory.
22:75
那麼他怎樣仍舊說話呢?這既是他活著的憑據,也是他被眾人歌頌、稱奇並稱為有福的憑據;
How then does he yet speak? This is a sign both of his living, and of his being sung, admired, and called blessed by all;
22:76
for he who exhorts others to be righteous, speaks.
22:77
For speech does not accomplish so much as does that man's suffering.
22:78
Just as the heaven speaks merely by being seen, so too does that man speak merely by being remembered.
22:79
Not even if he had proclaimed himself aloud, not even if he had possessed ten thousand tongues and were still alive, would he be so admired as he now is.
22:80
That is to say, these things do not come to pass without retribution, nor simply, nor do they pass away unheeded.
22:81
以諾因著信被接去,叫他不至於見死;
By faith Enoch was translated, that he should not see death;
22:82
人也找不著他,因為神已經把他接去了;
and he was not found, because God had translated him;
22:83
for before his translation he had this testimony, that he had pleased God.
22:84
人非有信,就不能得神的喜悅;
But without faith it is impossible to please Him;
22:85
for he who comes to God must first believe that He is, and that He becomes a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.
22:86
This man displayed a faith greater than Abel's.
22:87
How so? Because, although he came after him, yet the things that had befallen that man were sufficient to have turned him away.
22:88
怎麼說呢?神早已預知亞伯必要遭害;
How? God foreknew that he would perish;
22:89
he was honored by Him, yet He did not defend him.
22:90
然而就連這事也沒有叫以諾陷入怠惰;
And yet not even this cast Enoch into slackness;
22:91
he did not say to himself, 'What need is there of toils and dangers? Abel honored God, and He did not defend him.'
22:92
那已經去世的人,從他兄弟所受的刑罰得著甚麼益處呢?他又能從那裡得著甚麼好處呢?就算神施行嚴厲的懲罰罷;
For what profit came to the departed one from his brother's punishment? And what benefit could accrue to him from that quarter? Let us grant that God exacts a grievous penalty;
22:93
這對那被殺的人又有何益呢?以諾並沒有說這樣的話,也沒有起這樣的念頭,倒是越過這一切,深知既有神,祂必定也是報應的主;
what is that to the one who was slain? Enoch said no such thing, nor did he entertain such thoughts, but, passing over all this, he knew that if God exists, He is by all means also a rewarder;
22:94
and yet as yet they knew nothing about the resurrection.
22:95
But if those who as yet knew nothing about the resurrection, and moreover saw here the very opposite, nevertheless so pleased God,
22:96
how much more ought we? For those men neither knew anything about the resurrection, nor had any examples to look to.
22:97
This very thing, then, made him to please God—that he received nothing in return.
22:98
He knew that God is a rewarder.
22:99
Whence? For as yet He had not even repaid Abel.
22:100
So that reasoning suggested one thing, but faith the contrary of what was seen.
22:101
'Even you, then,' he says, 'if you see yourselves receiving nothing here, be not troubled.'
22:102
But how was Enoch translated by faith? Because the cause of his translation was his pleasing God, and the cause of his pleasing God was faith.
22:103
For if he had not known that he would receive recompense, how would he have pleased God? And without faith it is impossible to please Him.
22:104
How? For if one believes that God is, and that there is recompense, he will have the rewards.
22:105
From this, then, comes the pleasing of God.
22:106
For he who comes to God must believe that He is—not what He is.
22:107
But if the fact 'that He is' has need of faith, and not of reasonings,
22:108
is it possible to comprehend by reasoning 'what He is'? If the fact that He is a rewarder has need of faith, and not of reasonings,
22:109
how is it possible to embrace by reasoning the things pertaining to His essence? For what manner of reasoning will be able to attain unto these? For some assert that things that exist are borne along of their own accord.
22:110
Do you see that, unless we have faith concerning all things—not concerning the recompense alone, but also concerning the very being of God—everything is lost to us? And many inquire where Enoch was translated, and why he was translated, and why neither he nor Elijah died, and whether they are still alive, and how they live, and in what condition they are.
22:111
But it is altogether superfluous to inquire into these things.
22:112
因為聖經已經說明這人被接去,那人被提上升;
For that this man was translated, and that that man was taken up, the Scriptures have declared;
22:113
至於他們在哪裡,並怎樣存在,聖經卻沒有再加以說明;
but where they are, and how they are, they have not further added;
22:114
for they say nothing beyond what is necessary.
22:115
For this indeed came to pass—I mean the matter of the translation—straightway from the very beginning, so that human nature might receive hope of the
22:116
死亡被廢除、魔鬼的暴政被推翻的盼望,並且深知死亡終必被解除;
abolishing of death, and of the overthrow of the devil's tyranny, and that death should be undone;
22:117
for he was translated not as a dead man, but so that he should not see death.
22:118
For this reason he added, 'He was translated alive, because he had pleased God.'
22:119
因為正如一位向兒子發出恐嚇的父親,其實在恐嚇之後,立刻就想收回那恐嚇,卻仍然忍耐存留,為要暫時管教並勸戒他,任憑那恐嚇繼續有效;
For just as a father who has threatened his son wishes indeed at once to relax the threat when he has made it, yet forbears and endures, in order meanwhile to chasten and admonish him, letting the threat remain in force;
22:120
so also God—to speak, as it were, in human fashion—did not forbear, but straightway showed that death is undone.
22:121
And first He allows death to come upon the righteous man, wishing through the child to make the father afraid.
22:122
因為祂願意顯明這判決確實堅定,就沒有立刻使惡人受懲,倒是連那得祂喜悅的人也交付於刑罰之下——我是說那有福的亞伯;
For, wishing to show that the sentence is truly firm, He subjected to punishment not the wicked at once, but even the one who had pleased Him—I mean that blessed Abel;
22:123
and almost immediately after him He translated Enoch alive.
22:124
And He did not raise up that one, lest they should straightway take courage, but He translated this one alive—through Abel striking fear, and through this one giving zeal to please Him.
22:125
So that those who say that all things are borne and carried along of their own accord, and who look for no recompense, do not please God—even as neither do the Greeks.
22:126
For to those who diligently seek Him by works and by knowledge He becomes a rewarder.
22:127
既然我們有一位賞賜的主,就當凡事而行,免得被奪去那隨著德行而來的賞賜;
Since, then, we have a rewarder, let us do all things, so as not to be deprived of the rewards that attend virtue;
22:128
for indeed it is worthy of many tears to overlook such a recompense, to despise such a requital.
22:129
For just as to those who diligently seek Him He becomes a rewarder, so to those who seek Him not He becomes the contrary;
22:130
'Seek,' He says, 'and you shall find.'
22:131
But how is it possible to find the Lord? Consider how gold is found—with much toil.
22:132
'With my hands,' he says, 'by night, before Him, and I was not deceived.'
22:133
That is to say, just as we seek that which is lost, so let us seek God.
22:134
我們豈不將心思集中在那事上麼?豈不逐一探問眾人麼?豈不遠行出外麼?豈不許人以錢財麼?譬如說,假若我們有一個兒子失落了;
Do we not fix our mind upon it? Do we not question everyone? Do we not undertake a journey abroad? Do we not promise money? For instance, suppose one of us has a son who is lost;
22:135
what do we not do? What land, what sea do we not traverse? Do we not reckon money and houses and all things as secondary to the finding of him? And if we find him, we hold him fast, we grip him tightly, we do not let him go.
22:136
並且當我們要尋找時,我們就使盡各樣的方法,為要尋見所尋找的;
And when we are about to seek, we set every means to work, so as to find the thing sought;
22:137
how much more, then, ought we to do this in the case of God, seeking Him as one of the necessary things? Nay rather, not thus, but far more.
22:138
But since we are weak, seek God at least as you seek your money, or your son.
22:139
Do you not journey abroad for this? Have you never gone abroad for money's sake? Do you not busy yourself about everything? Is it not when you have found it that you then take courage? 'Seek,' He says, 'and you shall find.'
22:140
因為凡所尋找的都需要許多的用心,在尋求神的事上尤其如此;
For the things sought have need of much care, and most of all in the case of God;
22:141
for many are the hindrances, many the things that cast a shadow, many the things that impede our perception.
22:142
因為正如太陽是顯而易見的,擺在眾人中間,人人都得見,我們無須去尋找它;
For just as the sun is manifest, and lies open in the midst for all, and we have no need to seek it;
22:143
然而我們若把自己埋藏起來,把一切都翻轉顛倒,我們就需要許多勞苦才能仰望太陽;
yet if we bury ourselves, and turn everything upside down, we have need of much toil in order to look upon the sun;
22:144
so indeed also here: if we bury ourselves in the depth of evil desires, in the darkness of the passions and of the affairs of this life, we scarcely see clearly, we scarcely lift up our heads.
22:145
He who is buried below, the more he looks upward, so much the more does he draw near to the sun.
22:146
所以我們當抖去塵土,撕開那籠罩在我們身上的雲霧;
Let us therefore shake off the dust, let us rend asunder the mist that lies upon us;
22:147
It is a certain dense and impenetrable cloud, and it does not allow us to look upward.
22:148
And how, one asks, is this cloud rent asunder? If we draw to ourselves the rays of the spiritual Sun, the Sun of righteousness; if we lift up our hands to heaven.
22:149
'The lifting up of my hands,' it says, 'is an evening sacrifice.'
22:150
if, together with our hands, we lift up our mind as well.
22:151
You who are initiated know what I mean.
22:152
and perhaps you also recognize what has been said, and perceive that at which I have hinted.
22:153
Let us lift up our understanding on high.
22:154
I myself know many men who all but hang suspended from the earth, stretching out their hands beyond measure, and grieving that it is not possible to be borne aloft, and in this way
22:155
praying with eagerness.
22:156
我願你們常常如此;
Thus I wish you to be always;
22:157
若不能常常,至少要屢次;
but if not always, yet at least frequently;
22:158
and if not frequently, yet at least sometimes, whether at the morning hours or at the evening hours.
22:159
請告訴我,你不能伸出雙手嗎?那就隨你所願地伸展你的心志罷;
For tell me, are you unable to stretch out your hands? Then stretch out your resolve as far as you will;
22:160
把這心志伸展直到諸天本身;
stretch this out even to heaven itself;
22:161
你若願意觸及那穹蒼的頂峰,或升得更高、在其中往來遊行,這都是你所能作的;
and if you wish to touch its very summit, or, ascending higher still, to walk about therein, it is permitted you;
22:162
for our mind is both lighter and loftier than any wing.
22:163
And when it receives also the grace from the Spirit, oh, how swift it is, how keen, how it ranges over all things, how it is neither borne down nor falls to the ground!
22:164
Let us fashion for ourselves these wings, for by them we shall be able to fly across the ocean of the tumult of this present life.
22:165
The swiftest of the birds fly unharmed over mountains and glens and seas and crags in a brief moment of time.
22:166
心思也正是如此;
Such also is the mind;
22:167
when it is winged, when it withdraws from the things of this life, nothing can lay hold of it; it is higher than all things, even than the fiery darts of the devil.
22:168
魔鬼並非那樣精準的射手,能射及那樣的高處;那麼他作甚麼呢?他固然射出他的箭;
The devil is not so good a marksman as to be able to reach that height, but what does he do? He does indeed let fly his darts;
22:169
卻射不中;那箭反倒空空地返回他自己身上,而且不僅是空的,更是落在他自己的頭上;
but he does not hit the mark; rather the dart returns to him empty, and not only empty, but even upon his own head.
22:170
for that which is sent forth by him must by all means strike something.
22:171
正如人所射出的箭,或擊中所瞄準的目標,或射中飛鳥、牆壁、衣裳、木頭,或劃破空氣本身;
Just as, then, that which is shot by men either strikes that at which it is aimed, or a bird, or a wall, or a garment, or a piece of wood, or cleaves through the very air;
22:172
so also the dart of the devil must by all means strike something; and if it does not strike him at whom it is aimed, it has assuredly struck the one who sent it.
22:173
And it is possible to learn this from many quarters, that whenever we are not struck, he himself is assuredly struck;
22:174
我所指的例如是這樣:他曾陰謀陷害約伯,卻未擊中他,反倒是他自己被擊中了;
for instance, what I mean is this: He plotted against Job, but did not strike him; rather he himself was struck;
22:175
he plotted against Paul, but did not strike him; rather he himself was struck.
22:176
And everywhere it is possible, if we are watchful, to see this happening.
22:177
因為每當他擊打人時,他自己就被擊打;
For whenever indeed he strikes, he is struck;
22:178
but much more so, when against him we have armed and fortified ourselves with swords and with the shield of faith, and keep ourselves in safety, so as to become impregnable.
22:179
Now the dart of the devil is evil desire.
22:180
它是火,是焰;它擄掠、它毀滅、它焚燒;
It is fire, it is flame; it snatches away, it destroys, it burns up;
22:181
but let us quench it by long-suffering, by forbearance.
22:182
正如燒紅的鐵,一浸入水中就失去了它的火;
For just as red-hot iron, when plunged into water, loses its fire;
22:183
so anger, falling upon the long-suffering man, does the long-suffering man no harm, but rather benefits him, and he himself is the more strengthened.
22:184
因為沒有甚麼能與恆忍相等;
For there is nothing equal to long-suffering;
22:185
這樣的人永不受辱;
such a man is never insulted;
22:186
正如金剛石的身軀不被擊傷,這樣的靈魂也是如此;
but just as bodies of adamant are not wounded, so neither are such souls;
22:187
for they are higher than the darts.
22:188
The long-suffering man is lofty, and so lofty that he receives no wound from the shot.
22:189
But laugh not openly, lest you provoke him; rather laugh in your soul, for his sake.
22:190
For indeed in the case of children, when they strike us in anger, as though defending themselves, we laugh.
22:191
所以你若發笑,你與他之間的差距,就如同孩童與成人之間那樣大;
If therefore you laugh, there will be as great a difference between you and him as between a child and a man;
22:192
但你若動了兇性,你就成了孩童;
but if you grow savage, you have become a child;
22:193
for those who are angry are more senseless than children.
22:194
請告訴我,若有人看見一個孩童大發脾氣,豈不嗤笑他嗎?在發怒之人身上,也可看見同樣的事發生;
For tell me, if one looks upon a child in a rage, does he not laugh at it? This same thing may be seen to happen also in the case of the angry;
22:195
這樣的人也是氣量狹小的,而既是氣量狹小,就也是愚昧的;
such men are also faint-hearted, and if faint-hearted, then also foolish;
22:196
for 'the faint-hearted,' it says, 'is exceedingly foolish.'
22:197
The foolish man, then, is a babe.
22:198
'And the long-suffering man,' it says, 'is great in understanding.'
22:199
所以,讓我們竭力追求這恆忍,那些在其中有長進的人,就必得著豐盛的智慧;
This long-suffering, therefore, let us pursue, whence much prudence accrues to those who succeed in it;
22:200
that we may attain the good things promised to us, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, and adoration, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
