你們要追念從前的日子,那時你們蒙了光照,便忍受了痛苦的大爭戰;
But call to remembrance the former days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings;
21:2
一面在毀謗和患難中被眾人觀看;
partly, being made a spectacle both by reproaches and afflictions;
21:3
and partly, becoming partakers with those who were so treated.
21:4
For you both had compassion on the prisoners, and accepted with joy the plundering of your possessions, knowing that you have for yourselves a better and an abiding substance in the heavens.
21:5
The best of physicians, whenever they make a deep incision and intensify the pain by the wound, comfort the suffering part, and soothe and restore the troubled soul; and they do not apply a second incision, but attend to the one already made with gentle medicines able to remove much of the anguish, thus giving comfort.
21:6
This also Paul did: having shaken their souls and pierced them with the remembrance of hell, and having assured them that he who has insulted the grace of God must surely perish—showing this also from the laws of Moses, that they shall both perish and be more severely punished, and sealing what he had said with other testimonies, saying, 'It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God';
21:7
為要免得他們的心靈因極大的懼怕而灰心喪膽,被憂愁所吞滅,他便藉著稱讚和勸勉來安慰他們;
so that, lest the soul, giving up under the great fear, be swallowed up by grief, he comforts them by means of encomiums and exhortation;
21:8
and he brings to bear upon them their own zeal drawn from themselves.
21:9
'For call to remembrance,' he says, 'the former days, in which, after you were enlightened, you endured a great conflict of sufferings.'
21:10
從行為而來的勉勵是何等大;
Great is the encouragement that comes from deeds;
21:11
for one who has begun a matter ought, as he goes forward, to make further progress.
21:12
When you were being led in, when you were in the rank of learners, you showed such eagerness, such nobility.
21:13
And he who exhorts, thus especially exhorts—from what is their own.
21:14
And observe, he did not say simply,
21:15
'You endured a conflict,' but with the addition of 'a great' one.
21:16
And he did not say 'temptations,' but 'a conflict,' which is a name of commendation and of the highest praise.
21:17
Then he also recounts them one by one, expanding his discourse and multiplying his praises.
21:18
How? 'Partly,' he says, 'being made a spectacle by reproaches and afflictions.'
21:19
因為毀謗深觸人心,是一件大事,足以扭曲心靈、蒙蔽理智;
For reproach is a great thing to reach the heart, and able to pervert the soul and to darken the reasoning;
21:20
for hear what the Prophet says:
21:21
'My tears have been my bread day and night, while it is said to me each day,
21:22
Where is your God?' And again:
21:23
'If an enemy had reproached me, I could have borne it.'
21:24
For since the human race is exceedingly vainglorious, therefore it is easily caught by this very thing.
21:25
And he did not say simply, 'By reproaches,' but this too with much emphasis: 'being made a spectacle,' he says.
21:26
For when one is reproached by himself, it is grievous; but far more so, when it is before all.
21:27
For consider with me how great an evil it was: that men who had departed from the lowliness of Judaism, and had passed over as to a better life, and had despised the customs of their fathers, should suffer ill at the hands of their own kinsmen, and that with no relief.
21:28
'I cannot say,' he means, 'that you suffered these things but grieved under them; rather, you even rejoiced exceedingly.'
21:29
And this he made clear by saying:
21:30
'And partly, becoming partakers with those who were so treated;'
21:31
'for you had compassion on the prisoners;'
21:32
and he brings the very apostles into the midst.
21:33
'Not only,' he says, 'were you not ashamed at your own sufferings, but you also shared with the others who suffered these things.'
21:34
This too is part of his exhorting them.
21:35
He did not say, 'Bear my afflictions, share with me,' but simply, 'You had compassion on the prisoners.'
21:36
你看見了嗎,他是指著自己和其他被捆綁的人說的?你們竟不把捆鎖當作捆鎖,反倒像高尚的鬥士一樣站立得穩;
Do you see that he speaks of himself and of the others who were bound? Thus you did not regard the bonds as bonds, but stood firm as noble athletes;
21:37
so that not only did you need no comfort in your own trials, but you even became comfort to the others.
21:38
'And you accepted with joy the plundering of your possessions.'
21:39
Wonderful! How great the full assurance of faith!
21:40
Then he also states the reason, exhorting them not only unto the conflicts themselves, but also that they be not shaken from the faith.
21:41
'Seeing your wealth being plundered,' he says, 'you bore it;'
21:42
'for already you were beholding the unseen as though it were seen;'
21:43
這正是純全信心的標記;
which was the mark of a sincere faith;
21:44
and by the very deeds you displayed it.
21:45
被搶奪這事,或許是出於搶奪者的暴力,無人能加以攔阻;
Now the being plundered was perhaps due to the violence of those who plundered, and no one could have prevented it;
21:46
so that it is not yet clear from this that you endured the plundering on account of the faith.
21:47
然而這一點也是明顯的;
And yet this too is clear;
21:48
因為你們若願意,本可以藉著不信而不被搶奪;
for it was possible, had you so wished, not to be plundered, by not believing;
21:49
但你們所行的,遠比這更大——就是甚至甘心歡喜地忍受這樣的事;
but you did what is far greater than this—namely, to bear such things even with joy;
21:50
which was wholly apostolic, and worthy of those noble souls who, when they were scourged, rejoiced.
21:51
'For they departed,' it says, 'from the presence of the council, rejoicing that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonour for His name.'
21:52
But he who bears it with joy shows that he has some reward, and that the matter is not a loss but a gain.
21:53
And the word 'accepted' indicates their voluntary endurance.
21:54
How, then, did you choose and welcome it? 'Knowing,' he says, 'that you have for yourselves a better and an abiding substance in the heavens.'
21:55
What is 'abiding'? Secure—not perishing as this one does.
21:56
Then, having praised them, he says:
21:57
'Do not, then, cast away your confidence, which has a great reward.'
21:58
你這話是什麼意思呢?他並不說:「你們已經丟棄了勇敢的心,如今要重新得回」,免得他們灰心喪志;
What do you mean? He did not say, 'You have cast away your confidence, so recover it,' lest they should give up in despair;
21:59
反倒是,既然你們已經擁有它,就不要把它丟棄;
But rather, since you have it, do not cast it away;
21:60
which the more encouraged them and made them grow strong.
21:61
For to recover again what has been cast away requires more labor, whereas not to lose what is being held fast is not so hard.
21:62
But to the Galatians he writes the opposite:
21:63
'My little children, of whom I travail in birth again until Christ be formed in you.'
21:64
因為那些人傾向於更為鬆懈,所以他們需要更為尖銳刺人的話語;
For those were disposed to greater laxity, wherefore they needed a more piercing word;
21:65
but these were more faint-hearted, wherefore they rather needed a more soothing treatment.
21:66
'Cast not away therefore,' he says, 'your confidence.'
21:67
So that they were in great boldness toward God.
21:68
'Which,' he says, 'has great recompense of reward.'
21:69
What is this? 'Then,' he says, 'shall we receive these things.'
21:70
Therefore, if it is laid up for the time to come, we must not seek it here.
21:71
Then, lest anyone should say, 'Behold, all that is ours has already been accomplished,' for this reason he anticipated them and their supposition, saying:
21:72
「你們若曉得自己在諸天之上有更美長存的家業,就不要在今世尋求甚麼;
'If you know that you have in the heavens a better and abiding substance, seek nothing here;'
21:73
for you have need of endurance, not of adding further struggle, that you may remain in the same state, that you may not fling away what has been entrusted to you.
21:74
You need nothing else, save only to stand as you have stood, that having come to the end, you may receive the promise.
21:75
'For you have need,' he says, 'of endurance, that having done the will of God, you may receive the promise.'
21:76
Therefore you need but one thing only, that you await the delay, not that you contend anew.
21:77
'You are at the very crown itself,' he says; 'you have borne all the contests, the bonds, the afflictions; your goods were plundered;'
21:78
那麼又如何呢?你們如今站立好了,只待受冠冕;
what then? You are now standing ready to be crowned;
21:79
this alone bear, the waiting for the crown.
21:80
Thus he exhorts them, as one might say to an athlete who has thrown down all his opponents, and
21:81
他既已再無敵手,正將要受冠,卻忍受不了那段時間,就是那賽會主持人前來為他戴上冠冕的那段時候;
who has no adversary left, and is then about to be crowned, but cannot bear that interval during which the president of the games comes and sets the crown upon him;
21:82
but he, being unable to endure, would wish to go out and flee, as not bearing the thirst and the scorching heat.
21:83
This then he hints at; what does he say? 'Yet a little while, how little, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry.'
21:84
因為惟恐他們說:「祂到底幾時才來呢?」他便引用聖經來安慰他們;
For that they might not say, 'And when will He come?' he comforts them from the Scriptures;
21:85
for indeed the saying, 'Now is our salvation nearer,' when he says it elsewhere, consoles them, as though but little of the remaining time were left.
21:86
And this he says not of himself, but from the Scriptures.
21:87
But if from of old it was said, 'Yet a little while, how little, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry,'
21:88
it is clear that now He is nearer.
21:89
So that even the very waiting is a reward, and no small one.
21:90
他說:「但義人必因信得生;
'But the just,' he says, 'shall live by faith;'
21:91
'and if he draw back, my soul has no pleasure in him.'
21:92
Great is this consolation, when one shows men who have achieved the whole, yet are losing it through a little negligence.
21:93
'But we are not of them who draw back unto destruction, but of them that believe unto the saving of the soul.'
21:94
'Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.'
21:95
'For by it the elders obtained a good report.'
21:96
他說「未見之事的確據」,用的是何等的詞語;
What an expression he used in saying, 'The evidence of things not seen';
21:97
for 'evidence' (proof) is a word used of things exceedingly manifest.
21:98
Faith therefore is the seeing of things unseen, he says, and it brings the things not seen to the same full assurance as the things which are seen.
21:99
It is not possible, then, to disbelieve in the things that are seen; nor again, unless one has been assured concerning the things invisible more clearly than of the things visible, can there be faith.
21:100
因為既然那在盼望中之事似乎是沒有實質的,信就將實質賜給它們;
For since the things that are in hope seem to be without substance, faith bestows substance upon them;
21:101
or rather, it does not bestow it, but faith itself is their very being.
21:102
For instance, the resurrection has not come to pass, nor does it exist in substance, but hope gives it subsistence in our soul.
21:103
This is 'the substance of things hoped for.'
21:104
If then it is the evidence of things not seen, why do you wish to see them, so as to fall away from faith and from being righteous, if indeed the just shall live by faith? But if you wish to see them, you are no longer among the faithful.
21:105
'You have toiled,' he says, 'you have contended;'
21:106
do not seek the whole here.
21:107
These things were indeed spoken to the Hebrews, but the exhortation is common also to many of those here gathered together.
21:108
How, and in what manner? To the faint-hearted, to the small-souled.
21:109
因為當他們看見惡人亨通,自己卻遭遇困苦,就苦惱煩悶,就按捺不住;
For when they see wicked men prospering, and themselves in adversity, they are distressed, they are impatient;
21:110
when they long for those men's punishment and vengeance, or when they await the reward of their own labors.
21:111
'Yet a little while, how little, and He that shall come will come, and will not tarry,' said Paul then.
21:112
And we too, therefore, let us say these things to the slothful:
21:113
'There will assuredly be punishment; it will assuredly come; the things of the resurrection are now at the very doors.'
21:114
有人說:「這事從何得知呢?」我並不從眾先知來立論;
'Whence is this clear?' one says. I do not argue from the prophets;
21:115
因為我如今的話語不單是對基督徒說的,就是遇著一個希臘人(外邦人),我也滿有把握,並且提出證據,也要教導他;
for it is not to Christians only that my discourse is now addressed, but even if he be a Greek, I am wholly confident, and I furnish the proofs, and I will teach him;
21:116
「若那些預言未曾應驗,你就連這些也不必信;
'If those things did not come to pass, then do not believe these either;'
21:117
但既然一切都已應驗了,你為何還疑惑那尚未成就之事呢?固然,若甚麼都未曾應驗,卻要相信那些事,是極不可信的;
but if all came to pass, why do you doubt concerning the things that remain? And yet it would have been very unlikely, when nothing had come to pass, to believe concerning those things;
21:118
or, when all had come to pass, to disbelieve these.
21:119
But rather, I will make the matter plain by an example.
21:120
基督曾說耶路撒冷必被攻取,並且被攻取到一個從未有過的地步,且再也不得重建;
Christ said that Jerusalem should be taken, and taken with such a capture as never was before, and that it should no more rise again;
21:121
and the prediction came to pass in deed.
21:122
He said that there should be great tribulation, and it came to pass.
21:123
祂曾說,正如一粒芥菜種被撒下,福音的宣揚也必如此傳開;
He said that, even as a grain of mustard seed being sown, so should the preaching be spread abroad;
21:124
and this we see day by day overrunning the whole inhabited world.
21:125
祂曾說,凡撇下父親、母親、弟兄、姊妹的,必得著父親和母親;
He said that those who had forsaken father, or mother, or brothers, or sisters, should have both fathers and mothers;
21:126
and this too we see fulfilled through the deeds.
21:127
He said, 'In the world you shall have tribulation;'
21:128
「但你們可以放心,我已經勝了世界」——這就是說,沒有人能勝過你們;
'but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world' — that is, No one shall prevail over you;
21:129
And this too we see fulfilled through the events themselves.
21:130
He said that the gates of hades shall not prevail against the Church, and this while she is persecuted, and that no one shall quench her.
21:131
And to this prediction also the experience of events bears witness.
21:132
And yet, when He spoke these things at that time, He was exceedingly hard to believe.
21:133
Why so? Because all was but words, and as yet He furnished no proof of the things spoken.
21:134
So that now they have become far more worthy of belief.
21:135
He said that when the Gospel shall have been preached among all the nations, then shall the end come.
21:136
And behold, we have now well-nigh arrived at the end.
21:137
For the greater part of the inhabited world has heard the proclamation.
21:138
So then the end is at hand.
21:139
But tell me, why are you anxious about the consummation of the world? For that indeed is near at hand, but the life of each one of us, and its end, is much nearer still.
21:140
For 'the days of our years,' it says, 'in them are seventy years.'
21:141
'but if by reason of strength, they be eighty years.'
21:142
The day of judgment is near.
21:143
'A brother does not redeem; shall a man redeem?' Much shall we repent there.
21:144
'But in death no one shall make confession to Him.'
21:145
'Let us come before His face with confession'—
21:146
that is, before His coming.
21:147
For here indeed whatever we do has power to avail, but there no longer.
21:148
If someone, tell me, were to set us in a blazing furnace for a little while, should we not undergo all things to be delivered, even if we had to give up our money, even if we had to endure slavery? How many have fallen into grievous diseases, and would readily have chosen to give everything so as to be delivered, had the choice but been set before them? If then here a short-lived sickness so distresses us, what shall we do there, when repentance shall be of no avail? With how many evils are we now laden, and perceive it not? We bite one another, we devour one another, wronging, accusing, slandering, stung with envy at the reputations of our neighbors.
21:149
When someone wishes to undermine his neighbor's good name, he says:
21:150
'So-and-so said this about him; God pardon me, do not examine me too closely; I only owe an account of what I heard.'
21:151
Why then do you speak at all, if you do not believe it? Why do you speak? Why do you make it credible by the wide report? Why do you spread abroad a report that is not true? You disbelieve it, and yet you entreat God not to examine you? Speak not then, but hold your peace, and you are freed from all fear.
21:152
But I know not whence this disease has fallen upon men.
21:153
We have become babblers; nothing remains stored up within our soul.
21:154
Hear a certain wise man exhorting and saying: 'Have you heard a word? Let it die within you.'
21:155
And again: 'A fool has heard a word, and travailed with it, as a woman in labor from the face of her infant.'
21:156
We are ready for accusations, prepared for condemnations.
21:157
And even if we had wrought no other evil, this alone were enough to destroy us and to lead us away to hell, this to involve us in ten thousand evils.
21:158
And that you may know it exactly, hear the Prophet saying: 'You sat and spoke against your brother.'
21:159
'But it was not I,' he says, 'but that other.'
21:160
For if you had not spoken, the other would not have heard.
21:161
But even if he was going to hear it in any case, still you were not the cause of the sin.
21:162
When you ought to be overshadowing and concealing the faults of your neighbors, do you instead parade them abroad under the pretext of a love of goodness? You are no accuser, but a babbler, a trifler, a fool.
21:163
You disgrace yourself along with him, and perceive it not. See how many evils arise from this.
21:164
You provoke God to anger, you grieve your neighbor, you make yourself liable to punishment.
21:165
Do you not hear Paul speaking concerning widows? 'And not only idle,' he says, 'but they learn also to be babblers and busybodies, going about from house to house, and speaking things which they ought not.' So that even when you believe the things spoken against your brother, not even so ought you to repeat them, much less when you disbelieve them.
21:166
But do you everywhere look to your own interest, fearing to be examined by God? Fear then, lest you also be examined for your idle talk.
21:167
因為在這事上你不能說:「願神不要為我的閒言查究我」;
For here you cannot say, 'Let not God examine me for my idle talk';
21:168
for the very thing is idle talk.
21:169
Why did you parade it abroad? Why did you magnify the evil? This has power to destroy us.
21:170
For this reason Christ said:
21:171
'Judge not, that you be not judged.'
21:172
But no account of this do we make, nor does the case of the Pharisee bring us to our senses.
21:173
He said a true thing, that 'I am not as this publican,' and
21:174
he said it with no one listening, and yet he was condemned.
21:175
If he who spoke the truth was condemned, and that when speaking with no one to hear him,
21:176
what dreadful thing shall they not suffer who spread everywhere things that are false, and of which they are not even persuaded, like babbling women? What shall they not endure? Let us then set a door and a bolt upon our mouth.
21:177
因為由閒言生出了無數的惡;
For countless evils have come from idle talk;
21:178
households have been overthrown, friendships torn asunder, and ten thousand other grievous things have come to pass.
21:179
Do not busy yourself, O man, with your neighbor's affairs.
21:180
But are you a talker, and have you this failing? Speak of your own concerns to God.
21:181
So it shall no longer be a failing, but an advantage.
21:182
Speak of your own concerns to your friends, those who are true friends and righteous, and in whom you have confidence, that they may pray on behalf of your sins.
21:183
你若說別人的事,你毫無所得,毫無所獲,反倒喪亡了;
If you speak of the affairs of others, you have profited nothing, you have gained nothing, but you have even perished;
21:184
if you confess your own to the Master, you have great reward.
21:185
'For I said,' it says, 'I will confess against myself my iniquity to the Lord, and You forgave the ungodliness of my heart.'
21:186
Do you wish to judge? Judge your own concerns.
21:187
你若定自己的罪,就沒有人控告你;
No one accuses you, if you condemn yourself;
21:188
你若不定自己的罪,反有控告你的;
but he does accuse you, if you do not condemn yourself;
21:189
he accuses you, if you do not reprove yourself.
21:190
Have you seen so-and-so wrathful, provoked, or doing some other unseemly thing? Straightway call to mind your own faults as well, and thus you will neither condemn him severely, and will free yourself from the burden of your own sins.
21:191
我們若這樣規範自己的生活,若這樣經營我們的一生,若定自己的罪,或許我們就不至於多犯罪,反倒行許多善事,成為溫良節制的人,並要享受一切應許給愛神之人的美善;
If we thus order our own life, if we thus manage our existence, if we condemn ourselves, perhaps we shall not sin in many things, but shall work many good works, being gentle and moderate, and shall enjoy all the good things that are promised to those who love God;
21:192
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
