If then perfection were through the Levitical priesthood (for under it the people had received the law), what further need was there that another priest should rise up after the order of Melchizedek, and not be reckoned after the order of Aaron? For the priesthood being changed, of necessity there comes about a change of law also.
13:2
For He of whom these things are said belonged to another tribe, from which no one has ever attended at the altar.
13:3
For it is evident that our Lord has sprung out of Judah, concerning which tribe Moses spoke nothing about priesthood.
13:4
'If then perfection were through the Levitical priesthood,' he says.
13:5
Having spoken concerning Melchizedek, and shown how much greater he was than Abraham, and declared the great difference, from here he then begins to demonstrate the disparity of the covenant itself, and how the one is imperfect, but the other perfect.
13:6
And he does not yet enter upon the matters themselves, but for the present contends from the priesthood and the covenant.
13:7
For these things were more credible to the unbelievers, when the proof was drawn from things already assumed beforehand and already believed.
13:8
He showed that Melchizedek was far better than both Levi and Abraham, having stood in the rank of priest over them.
13:9
And again he takes up the argument from another point.
13:10
From what point? From the present priesthood, and the Jewish one.
13:11
And behold for me the surpassing wisdom!
13:12
For from that very point from which it was likely that one would cast Him out of the priesthood — since He was not after the order of Aaron — from this very point he establishes Him, but casts out those others.
13:13
And he does this by bringing himself in as if raising a difficulty about something — why ever He is called not after the order of Aaron — and thus resolving the perplexity.
13:14
'And I too,' he says, 'am perplexed about this very thing, for what reason He came not after the order of Aaron.'
13:15
For he shows this by saying, 'If then perfection were through the Levitical priesthood.'
13:16
And the phrase 'What further need,' carries much emphasis.
13:17
If then Christ, according to the flesh, had first been after the order of Melchizedek, and afterward the law had come to be, together with the things pertaining to Aaron,
13:18
那麼人或可合理地說,這些較為完全的,既是後來加入的,就廢去了那些先前的;
one might reasonably say that these, being more perfect, do away with those, inasmuch as they came in afterward;
13:19
but if Christ came later, and takes another pattern of priesthood, it is clear that it is because those others were more imperfect.
13:20
他說,讓我們姑且在論說中假定,一切都已成全了,祭司職任中並無任何不完全之處;
For let us suppose, he says, for the sake of argument, that all had been fulfilled, and that there was nothing imperfect in the priesthood;
13:21
why then was it necessary to be called 'after the order of Melchizedek,' and not 'after the order of Aaron'? For what reason, setting Aaron aside, did He bring in another priesthood, that of Melchizedek? 'If then perfection were through the Levitical priesthood,' he says.
13:22
That is, if the perfection of things, of doctrines, of life, had been through the Levitical priesthood.
13:23
And see how he advances by an orderly way.
13:24
他說了「照著麥基洗德的等次」,藉此指明照著麥基洗德等次的祭司職任是更美的;
He said 'after the order of Melchizedek,' showing that the priesthood after the order of Melchizedek is better;
13:25
and then he shows this also from the time, that it was after Aaron, evidently as being better.
13:26
And what does what follows mean: 'For the people,' he says, 'had received the law upon it'? What is the force of 'upon it'? It marches in step with it, he means; through it the people carries out all things.
13:27
It cannot be said that the law was given to any others.
13:28
'The people had received the law upon it,'
13:29
that is, they employ it and have employed it.
13:30
It cannot be said that it was indeed perfect, yet did not preside over the people.
13:31
What need, then, was there of another priesthood, if it possessed perfection? 'For the priesthood being changed, of necessity a change of the law also takes place.'
13:32
But if there must be another priest, or rather another priesthood, of necessity there must be another law as well.
13:33
This is directed against those who say:
13:34
What need was there of a new covenant? For he could indeed have adduced a testimony from prophecy as well:
13:35
「這是我與你們列祖所立的約」;
'This is the covenant which I made with your fathers;'
13:36
but for the present he contends from the priesthood.
13:37
And observe how he travailed to speak these things from the very outset.
13:38
'After the order of Melchizedek.'
13:39
這就廢去了亞倫的祭司職分;
This cast out the priesthood of Aaron;
13:40
Melchizedek, he said—as if to indicate that this priesthood was the better.
13:41
所以,若已引進另一種祭司職分,就必須有另一個約;
If, therefore, another priesthood has been introduced, there must be another covenant;
13:42
for neither can there be a priest apart from a covenant and laws and ordinances, nor, having received another priesthood, could he make use of the former one.
13:43
Then, that point which belonged to the objection—how one could be a priest without being a Levite—having laid it down beforehand in what precedes, he does not deign even to resolve it, but introduces it merely in passing.
13:44
他是說:我已講過,祭司的職任被更換了;
I have said, he means, that the priesthood was transferred;
13:45
而這更換,不僅在於方式,也不僅在於規條,更在於支派;
and it was transferred not in its manner only, nor in its ordinances, but also in its tribe;
13:46
How so? 'For the priesthood being changed,' he says.
13:47
That is, for this reason it was transferred from tribe to tribe, from the priestly to the royal, that the one and the same might be both royal and priestly.
13:48
起先是君王的,如今卻成了祭司的;
First it was royal, and now it has become priestly;
13:49
正如在基督的事上也是如此;
just as also in the case of Christ;
13:50
for he was ever a king, but became a priest when he took upon himself the flesh, when he offered the sacrifice.
13:51
你看見這轉變了嗎?而那些原屬反對者論點的事,他都彷彿是事理的順序所必需的一般引入;
Do you see the change? And the things that belonged to the objection, these he introduces as though the sequence of the matters themselves demanded them;
13:52
'For he of whom these things are spoken,' he says, 'belonged to another tribe, from which no one has given attendance at the altar.'
13:53
'For it is evident that our Lord has sprung out of Judah, concerning which tribe Moses spoke nothing about priesthood.'
13:54
And what he says is of this nature:
13:55
我也承認,並且知道,這支派毫無祭司的職分,也沒有一人從這支派中作過祭司;
I too affirm, and I know, that this tribe had nothing of the priesthood, nor did anyone from it exercise the priestly office;
13:56
因為「沒有一人事奉過祭壇」這話所指的正是這個意思;
for this is what is meant by 'No one has given attendance at the altar;'
13:57
but the whole is a transference.
13:58
Thus it was necessary that the law and the old covenant should be transferred, since the tribe itself had also been changed.
13:59
Do you see how he shows yet another difference, drawn from the change of the tribe? And not only from this is the greatness of the difference shown, but already also from the person, and from the covenant, and from the manner, and from the type itself.
13:60
'Who was made, not after the law of a fleshly commandment, but after the power of an indissoluble life.'
13:61
他說:祂成了祭司,卻不是照屬肉體之誡命的律法;
He has become a priest, he says, but not after the law of a fleshly commandment;
13:62
for that law was in most respects unlawful.
13:63
他稱它為屬肉體的誡命,實在恰當;
And he well called it a fleshly commandment;
13:64
for all its prescriptions were fleshly.
13:65
Τὸ γὰρ .
For to say, 'Circumcise the flesh, anoint the flesh, wash the flesh, cleanse the flesh, shave the flesh, bind up the flesh, nourish the flesh, let the flesh rest'—
13:66
these, tell me, are they not fleshly? And if you wish to learn also what were the good things it promised, listen:
13:67
Long life, he says, to the flesh; milk and honey to the flesh; peace to the flesh; luxury to the flesh.
13:68
亞倫正是從這律法領受祭司職分的;
It was from this law that Aaron received the priesthood;
13:69
Melchizedek, however, was not thus.
13:70
'And it is yet far more evident, if after the likeness of Melchizedek there arises another priest,'
13:71
What is evident? The distance between the two priesthoods, the difference—how much greater is he 'who was made, not after the law of a fleshly commandment.'
13:72
Who? This Melchizedek? No, but Christ.
13:73
'But after the power of an indissoluble life.'
13:74
For it is testified: 'You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek.'
13:75
That is, not temporary, nor having an end, but 'after the power of an indissoluble life.'
13:76
This he said in order to make clear that he became a priest through his own power and that of the Father, through a life without end.
13:77
然而這一句與「祂成為祭司,並不是照屬肉體之誡命的律法」並不相承接;
And yet this is not the consequent of the phrase, 'Who was made, not after the law of a fleshly commandment;'
13:78
for the consequent would have been to say, 'But after a spiritual one.'
13:79
但他藉著「屬肉體」這詞,顯明了它的暫時性;
But by means of the word 'fleshly' he showed its temporary character;
13:80
正如他在別處所說:「那些屬肉體的規條,是直到振興的時候為止而設立的」——乃是「照那生命的大能」;
just as also elsewhere he says, 'The ordinances of the flesh imposed until a time of reformation'—'after the power of a life;'
13:81
that is, that he lives by his own power.
13:82
他既說律法有了更改,又說明是怎樣更改的;
He said that a change of the law takes place, and showed how;
13:83
which of all things most fully assures the souls of men—namely, to know the reason with certainty—and leads to greater faith.
13:84
For we then believe the more, when we have learned both the cause and the reason according to which a thing comes to pass.
13:85
'For there is a disannulling,' he says, 'of a foregoing commandment, because of its weakness and unprofitableness.'
13:86
Here the heretics fasten upon us, saying:
13:87
Behold, Paul too has called the commandment evil.
13:88
He did not say 'because it was evil,' nor 'because it was wicked,' but 'because of
13:89
its weakness and unprofitableness.'
13:90
他在別處也指出它的軟弱;
And elsewhere too he shows its weakness;
13:91
as when he says, 'In that it was weak through the flesh.'
13:92
So then it is not this that is weak, but we.
13:93
'For the law made nothing perfect.'
13:94
What is 'It made nothing perfect'? It made no one perfect, he says, when it was disobeyed.
13:95
And besides, not even if it had been obeyed would it have made a man perfect and virtuous.
13:96
For the present, however, this is not what the passage means here, but rather that it availed nothing.
13:97
'Do this, and do not do that'—
13:98
merely laying down commands, but not also implanting the power to fulfil them.
13:99
What is 'a setting aside'? A change, a casting out.
13:100
And to show of what he was speaking, he added, saying, 'of the foregoing commandment'; thus calling the law, because it has been cast out on account of its own weakness.
13:101
and 'foregoing' means that which has passed away and been made old because of its weakness.
13:102
So that the setting aside is a setting aside of things that were in force.
13:103
And from this it is henceforth plain that it did prevail, but was despised, since it accomplished nothing.
13:104
Did the law then profit nothing? It did profit, and profit greatly, but toward making men perfect it did not profit.
13:105
Accordingly, then, he says, 'For the law made nothing perfect,' inasmuch as all things were types, all were shadow—circumcision, sacrifice, the Sabbath—which had no power to pass into the soul.
13:106
For this reason it gives place and withdraws.
13:107
But there is a bringing in of a better hope, through which we draw near to God.
13:108
and inasmuch as it was not without an oath.
13:109
Do you see that the matter of the oath here has thus become necessary? So that on this account he discoursed at length above concerning how God swore, and swore for the sake of fuller assurance.
13:110
'But there is a bringing in of a better hope.'
13:111
What is this? The law too had a hope, he says, but not such as this.
13:112
For they hoped that, if they were well-pleasing, they would possess the land and suffer nothing dreadful.
13:113
But here we hope that, being well-pleasing, we shall possess not earth but heaven.
13:114
or rather, what is far better than this, we hope to stand near to God, to come to the very throne of the Father, and to minister to Him together with the angels.
13:115
And observe how he sets these things forth little by little.
13:116
'Entering into that which is within the veil.'
13:117
「而且這是不無起誓的」;
'and inasmuch as it was not without an oath';
13:118
what does 'and inasmuch as it was not without an oath' mean? That is, not without an oath.
13:119
And not even simply have these things been promised, he says.
13:120
因為那些人成為祭司是沒有起誓的;
For those were made priests without an oath;
13:121
但祂成為祭司卻是有起誓的,藉著那向祂說話者:「主起了誓,決不後悔,你是照著麥基洗德的等次永遠為祭司」;
but He was made priest with an oath, through Him who said to Him, 'The Lord has sworn and will not repent: You are a priest for ever after the order of Melchizedek';
13:122
by so much has Jesus become the surety of a better covenant.
13:123
那些人成為祭司的原有許多位,是因為他們被死所阻,不能長久留任;
And those indeed have been made priests in great numbers, because they were prevented by death from continuing;
13:124
but He, because He abides for ever, has an unchangeable priesthood.
13:125
他陳明兩點差異:其一,它沒有終結,不像律法的祭司職分;其二,它是有起誓的;
He sets forth two differences: that it has no end, as the legal one had, and that it is with an oath;
13:126
他從承接這職分的基督說明這一點;
and this he does from Christ, who succeeds to it;
13:127
他說:「乃是照著那不能毀壞之生命的大能」;
'For after the power,' he says, 'of an indissoluble life';
13:128
他也從那起誓一事說明這點,即神起了誓;
and he does this also from the oath, that He swore;
13:129
他說:因為那前一個既是軟弱的,就被逐出了;
For if, because it was weak, he says, that one was cast out;
13:130
this one, because it is powerful, stands fast.
13:131
And he does this also from the priest.
13:132
怎樣說明呢?藉著顯明祂是獨一的;
How? By showing that He is one;
13:133
and He would not be one, unless He were immortal.
13:134
正如祭司之所以有許多位,是因為他們是必死的;
For just as there were many priests, because they were mortal;
13:135
so the One is one, because He is immortal.
13:136
他說:「耶穌就照這樣的程度,成了更美之約的中保」,因為神向祂起誓,說祂要永遠為祭司;
'By so much has Jesus become the surety of a better covenant,' inasmuch as He swore to Him that He should be a priest for ever, he says;
13:137
which He would not have done, unless He were living.
13:138
Whence also He is able to save to the uttermost those who through Him draw near to God, since He ever lives to make intercession for them.
13:139
Do you see that he says this in respect of that which is according to the flesh? When he had shown Him to be a priest, then, opportunely, he speaks of the interceding.
13:140
So that even when Paul says, 'Who also makes intercession for us,' he hints at the same thing—that being High Priest He makes intercession.
13:141
For He who raises the dead as He wills, and gives life even as the Father does, how, where there is need to save, does He intercede? He who has all judgment, how does He intercede? He who sends forth the angels, so as to cast some into the furnace and to save others, how does He intercede? 'Whence,' he says, 'He is also able to save.'
13:142
For this reason, then, He saves, because He does not die.
13:143
and if He has no successor, He is also able to preside over all.
13:144
因為在此世,大祭司縱然可欽佩,也只到他在世之時為止——例如撒母耳,以及所有像他這樣的人;
For here the high priest, even if he was admirable, was so only up to that time in which he lived—such as Samuel, and all who were like him;
13:145
but here it is not so, rather He saves to the uttermost.
13:146
What is 'to the uttermost'? He hints at some great mystery.
13:147
Not here only, he says, but also there He saves those who through Him draw near to God.
13:148
How does He save? By ever living to make intercession for them, he says.
13:149
你看見他因著人性而說了何等卑微的話嗎?因為他並不是說祂代求一次就得著了這事,乃是常常代求,並在任何需要為他們代求的時候都如此;
Do you see how lowly a thing he said, on account of the humanity? For he does not say that having once interceded He obtained this, but always, and whenever there is need to make intercession for them;
13:150
for this is what 'to the uttermost' signifies.
13:151
What is 'to the uttermost'? Not for the present only, he says, but also there in the life to come.
13:152
Does He then always need to pray? And how could that be reasonable? Even men who are righteous have often accomplished everything by a single petition, yet does He always need to? For what purpose, then, does He sit together with the Father? Do you see that speaking lowly things is a condescension? But what he means is this:
13:153
你們不要懼怕,也不要說:「祂固然愛我們,且對父有坦然無懼的信心,但祂不能永遠活著」;
Fear nothing, and do not say, 'Yes, He indeed loves us and has confidence toward the Father, but He cannot always live';
13:154
For such a High Priest was fitting for us: holy, guileless, undefiled, separated from sinners.
13:155
Do you see that the whole is spoken concerning the humanity? But when I say humanity, I mean one that possesses divinity, not dividing them, but leaving you to surmise what is fitting.
13:156
Do you see the difference of the High Priest? He recapitulated the things said above, when he said:
13:157
「乃是在凡事上照我們的樣式受過試探,只是沒有罪」;
'But one who has been tempted in all things according to our likeness, apart from sin';
13:158
for such a High Priest, he says, was fitting for us: holy, guileless.
13:159
「無邪惡」是什麼意思?就是脫離惡毒、毫無詭詐;
What is 'guileless'? Free from wickedness, not deceitful;
13:160
and that He is such, hear the prophet saying:
13:161
'Neither was guile found in His mouth.'
13:162
這話,人或許可以用來論到神;
This, then, one might say concerning God;
13:163
但誰會不以說「神不是詭詐的、不是狡猾的」為羞恥呢?至於那按肉體而言的方面,人倒有理由說「聖潔、無玷污」;
but who would not be ashamed to say that God is not deceitful nor guileful? Now concerning that which is according to the flesh one might have reason to say, 'Holy, undefiled';
13:164
這話也是人不能用來論到神的;
and this too one could not say concerning God;
13:165
for He has a nature that cannot be defiled.
13:166
Separated from sinners.
13:167
Does this, then, show only the difference, or is the sacrifice itself also different? The sacrifice too.
13:168
怎麼說呢?經上說,祂不像那些大祭司,需要天天先為自己的罪、後為百姓的罪獻上祭物;
How so? He has no need, it says, to offer up sacrifices daily, as the high priests do, first for their own sins and then for the sins of the people;
13:169
for this He did once for all, when He offered up Himself.
13:170
This—of what kind? Here, then, he sounds beforehand the surpassing excellence of the spiritual sacrifice.
13:171
他也論到其間之事——就是祭司之事;他論到那約之事,雖未全然論盡,卻仍論及了;
And he spoke of what lies between—that of the priest; he spoke of that of the covenant, not the whole of it indeed, yet he spoke of it nonetheless;
13:172
here, then, he sounds beforehand the sacrifice itself as well.
13:173
所以,你聽見祂被稱為祭司時,不要以為祂常常在盡祭司的職分;
Do not, therefore, when you hear Him called a priest, suppose that He is always exercising the priesthood;
13:174
for He exercised the priesthood once, and thereafter sat down.
13:175
For lest you should suppose that He stands above and is a minister, he shows that the matter belongs to the dispensation.
13:176
因為正如祂成了僕人,照樣也成了祭司與供職者;
For just as He became a servant, so also He became a priest and a minister;
13:177
but as, having become a servant, He did not remain a servant,
13:178
照樣,祂雖成了供職者,卻未一直作供職者;
so also, having become a minister, He did not remain a minister;
13:179
for it belongs not to a minister to sit, but to stand.
13:180
This, then, is what he here hints at—the greatness of the sacrifice, which, being but one and offered once for all, availed as much as all the others together could not.
13:181
For this He did once for all.
13:182
「這」——是甚麼樣的事?他說,這一位也必須有所獻上之物;
This—of what kind? For it is necessary, he says, that this one too should have something which He may offer;
13:183
for how could He offer for Himself, being without sin? Rather, He offered for the people.
13:184
What do you say? Does He have no need to offer for Himself, yet avails so much? Yes, he says.
13:185
For lest you should suppose that the phrase 'He did it once for all' was spoken concerning Him also, hear what he adds:
13:186
For the law appoints as high priests men who have weakness.
13:187
因這緣故,他們也常常為自己獻上;
For this reason too they always offer for themselves;
13:188
but the One who is mighty, who has no sin—for what reason should He offer for Himself? Assuredly not for Himself, but for the people He offered.
13:189
But the word of the oath, which came after the law, appoints a Son perfected forever.
13:190
What does 'perfected' mean? Consider.
13:191
保羅所擺出的對比並非嚴格相稱的;
Paul does not set the antitheses as exact counterparts;
13:192
for having said 'having weakness,' he did not say 'a mighty Son,' but 'perfected,' that is,
13:193
mighty, as one might put it.
13:194
Do you see that the name 'Son' is spoken in antithesis to that of servant? And by 'weakness' he means either sin or death.
13:195
What is 'forever'? Not now only, he says, is He without sin, but always.
13:196
If, then, He is perfect, if He never sins, if He lives forever, for what reason would He often offer sacrifices for us? But for the present he does not insist on this point, but on the point that He does not offer for Himself—this he insists on.
13:197
Since, then, we have such a High Priest, let us imitate Him, and let us walk in His footsteps.
13:198
and after this, fire and hell.
13:199
For it is on account of this that he turns the matter up and down, saying 'one priest, one sacrifice,' lest anyone, supposing them to be many, should sin without fear.
13:200
所以,我們凡蒙恩得算配受那印記的,凡享受了那祭物的,凡有分於那不死之筵席的,就當持守,謹守這尊貴與榮耀;
As many of us, therefore, as have been counted worthy of the seal, as many as have enjoyed the sacrifice, as many as have partaken of the immortal table, let us remain guarding our nobility and honor;
13:201
for the falling away is not without danger.
13:202
但那尚未蒙恩得算配受這些的人,也不可因此就放膽;
But as many as have not yet been counted worthy of these things, let not these on that account be over-confident;
13:203
for when one sins for this very purpose—that he may receive holy baptism at his last breath—he will often not attain it.
13:204
並且,你們要信我,我所要說的話,並非為要嚇唬你們;
And, believe me, it is not to frighten you that I say what I am about to say;
13:205
I know many who suffered this, who in the expectation of enlightenment sinned much, but on the day of their death departed empty.
13:206
因為神賜下洗禮的緣故,乃是要赦免罪,不是要增添罪;
For God gave baptism for this purpose—that He might loose sins, not that He might increase sins;
13:207
but if anyone should use it as a license for sinning the more, this becomes henceforth a cause of slothfulness.
13:208
For if there were no laver, men would live more securely, as not having remission.
13:209
你看見「我們可以作惡以成善」這話,是因我們這樣行的人才招來的嗎?所以我勸你們,連你們尚未領受奧祕(受洗)的人,也當謹守清醒;
Do you see that the saying 'Let us do evil that good may come' is made to be spoken by us who do these things? Therefore, I entreat you, you also who are uninitiated, be sober;
13:210
let no one pursue virtue as a hireling, no one as an ingrate, no one as though it were a heavy and burdensome thing.
13:211
Let us therefore pursue it with eagerness and with joy.
13:212
For if no reward were laid up, ought virtue not still to be a good? Yet nevertheless, even if it be with a reward, let us become good.
13:213
For how is this not a shame and a very great condemnation? 'Unless you give me a reward,' one says, 'I do not become self-controlled.'
13:214
那麼,我敢說一句話麼?你必永不是自守的,甚至當你自守的時候也不是,倘若你是為著賞賜才如此行;
Then may I be so bold as to say something? You will never be self-controlled, not even when you exercise self-control, if indeed you do it for a reward;
13:215
for you reckon virtue as nothing, if indeed you do not love it.
13:216
但神因我們極大的軟弱,暫且甘願讓美德即便是為著賞賜也得以成就;
But God, on account of our great weakness, was willing for the time being that it should come to pass even for a reward;
13:217
yet we do not pursue it even so.
13:218
But let us suppose, if you please, that a certain man who has wrought countless evils departs this life, and having been counted worthy of baptism (which I do not think readily happens), how will he depart to that world yonder, tell me? Though not called to account for the things he has done, yet being without boldness, and reasonably so.
13:219
因為一個人若活了一百歲,卻拿不出甚麼善行,惟有這一件——就是他沒有犯罪,或者連這也沒有,不過是單靠恩典得救而已——當他看見別人得了冠冕,光彩榮耀、備受讚許;
For when a man, having lived a hundred years, has displayed no good work, but only this—that he did not sin, or rather not even this, but that he was saved by grace alone—and sees others crowned, resplendent and highly esteemed;
13:220
即使他不至墮入地獄,請告訴我,他能忍受那憂悶麼?為使這事藉著一個例子更加明白,且說有兩個兵丁,其中一個偷竊、行不義、貪得無饜;
even if he does not fall into hell, will he bear the despondency, tell me? And that I may make the matter plainer by an example: let there be two soldiers, and let the one steal, do wrong, and be grasping;
13:221
另一個卻一樣也不作,反倒英勇作戰、成就大功、在戰場上樹立凱旋的記號、以血染紅自己的右手;
but let the other do none of these things, but play the man, achieve great deeds, set up trophies in wars, and redden his right hand with blood;
13:222
隨後,到了適當的時候,讓那一個從那與竊賊同列的地位,忽然被擢升上王位、披上紫袍;
then, when the fitting time comes, let the one be led up all at once from that same rank in which the thief also stood, to the royal throne and the purple robe;
13:223
而讓那竊賊仍留在原處,單憑君王的仁慈得免刑罰,卻居於最卑下之地,屈居於王的統轄之下;
but let that thief remain there where he was, and only through the royal clemency let him not pay the penalty for what he did, yet let him be in the lowest place, and be ranked under the king;
13:224
請告訴我,他能忍受那憂悶麼?當他看見那與他同伍的人竟升到諸尊位的頂峰、變得如此光耀、統管普天下,而自己仍留在下面,連那免於刑罰的事也不得帶著尊榮,反倒是全靠君王的恩典與仁慈?因為君王縱然赦免他、免去他的罪責,他仍必羞愧地度日;
will he bear the despondency, tell me, when he sees the one who was with him ascended, surely, to the very summit of the dignities, and become so resplendent, and ruling the whole world, while he himself still remains below, and does not even possess with honor his very exemption from punishment, but owes it to the grace and clemency of the king? For even though the king pardon him and free him from the charges, yet nevertheless he will live in shame;
13:225
for others surely will not admire him.
13:226
For in such pardons we admire not those
13:227
領受恩賞的人,乃是那些施予的人;
who receive the gifts, but those who give them;
13:228
and the greater the gifts they give, the more are the receivers put to shame, when their offenses are great.
13:229
那麼,這樣的人將用甚麼樣的眼目回望那些在宮中的人呢?當他們展示自己無數的汗水與傷痕,他自己卻無可展示,連自己得救也全歸於神的仁慈?因為這正如有人為一個將被拉去處決的兇手、竊賊、姦夫求情,吩咐讓他留在宮門的廊下,那人此後便無法正視任何人,縱然他已得免刑罰;
With what eyes, then, will such a one be able to look in return upon those who are in the palace, when they display their countless sweats and wounds, while he himself has nothing to display, but owes his very salvation to God's clemency alone? For just as if one should beg off a murderer, a thief, an adulterer who was about to be led away to execution, and should command him to be by the vestibule of the palace, that man will thereafter be able to look no one in the face, even though he has been freed from the punishment;
13:230
For do not suppose, because it is called a palace, that all attain to the same things.
13:231
For if even here both the prefect, and all who are about the king, and those who are far inferior and hold the place of what are called the decani, are in the palace—and that though there is so great a distance between the prefect and the decanus—
13:232
much more will this be the case in the palace above.
13:233
這話我並不是憑自己說的;
And this I do not say of myself;
13:234
for Paul too sets down a distinction greater than these.
13:235
For as great, he says, as are the differences from the sun to the moon, and to the stars, and to the least of the stars, so great also are the differences of those in the kingdom.
13:236
And that the difference between the sun and the least of the stars is far greater than that between the one called a 'decurion' and a prefect is plain to all.
13:237
因為太陽一同照亮全地,使之明亮,並將月亮和眾星都遮蔽起來;
For the sun at once illumines the whole inhabited world and makes it bright, hiding both the moon and the stars from view;
13:238
但星辰卻常常連顯現都不顯現,甚至在黑暗中也是如此;
but the star often does not so much as appear, and that even in the darkness;
13:239
for there are many of the stars which we do not see.
13:240
When, therefore, we see others becoming suns, while we hold the rank of the least stars, those that do not even appear, what consolation shall there be for us? Let us not, I beseech you, let us not be so sluggish, so idle; let us not turn the salvation that comes from God into an occasion for indolence, but let us trade with it and multiply it.
13:241
For even if one is but a catechumen, yet he knows Christ, yet he has come to know the faith, yet he gives ear to the divine words, yet he is not far from the divine knowledge, he knows the will of his Master.
13:242
Why then does he put it off? why does he delay and postpone? Nothing is better than a good life, both here and there, both for the baptized and for the catechumens.
13:243
For what burdensome thing, tell me, have we been commanded? 'Have a wife,' he says, 'and be temperate.'
13:244
Is this burdensome, tell me? And how can it be, when many are temperate even without a wife—not Christians only, but even pagans? That which the pagan surpasses out of vainglory, will you not observe even so much out of the fear of God? 'Give,' he says, 'to the poor out of what you have.'
13:245
Is this burdensome? Yet here too the pagans accuse us, for they have poured out whole fortunes for the sake of vainglory alone.
13:246
Is this difficult? For if it had not been commanded, ought we not to have done it aright, lest we should appear dishonorable? For that the opposite is difficult—I mean foul speech—is plain from this, that the soul is ashamed and blushes if it be led to say any such thing, and will not utter it, unless perhaps a man be drunk.
13:247
為甚麼你坐在市場上時所做的,回到家中就不做了呢?豈不是因著在場的人嗎?為甚麼你在你妻子面前不肯輕易做同樣的事呢?豈不是免得羞辱了她嗎?既然為了不羞辱你的妻子,你就有所節制;
For why is it that, when sitting in the marketplace, you do not do at home what you do there? Is it not because of those who are present? Why do you not readily do the same thing in the presence of your wife? Is it not that you may not affront her? So then, that you may not affront your wife, you refrain;
13:248
yet when you affront God, do you not blush? For He is everywhere present, and hears all things.
13:249
難道這件事本身不就是一種刑罰嗎?祂並沒有說「要苦待身體」,卻說甚麼呢?「不要醉酒」;
For is not this very thing, of itself, a punishment? He did not say, 'Mortify the body,' but what? 'Do not be drunk';
13:250
that is, do not so overthrow it as to strip the soul of its rule.
13:251
那麼怎麼樣呢?我們豈不當顧念身體嗎?斷乎不是;
What then? Ought we not to take forethought for the body? God forbid;
13:252
我不是這個意思,乃是說不要為身體的私慾籌算;
I do not say this, but do not take forethought for it unto its lusts;
13:253
for so also Paul commanded, saying:
13:254
'And make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.'
13:255
'Do not seize,' he says, 'what is not yours; do not defraud; do not swear falsely.'
13:256
What kinds of toil do these things require? what sweats? 'Do not speak evil,' he says, 'nor bring false accusation.'
13:257
What toil has this? On the contrary, it is the toil.
13:258
For when you speak evil, you are at once in danger, in suspicion: 'Has the man of whom I spoke perhaps heard it?'—whether
13:259
他是大人物還是小人物;
he be great or small;
13:260
因為他若是大人物,你在事務上立刻就要陷入危險;
for if he be great, you will straightway be in peril as to your affairs;
13:261
他若是小人物,就要以同樣的話回敬你,甚至以更加惡毒的話回敬你;
and if he be small, he will requite you with the like, or rather with things far more grievous;
13:262
for he will speak evil of you the more.
13:263
我們所受的吩咐,若是我們願意,就沒有一件是困難的,沒有一件是難以承擔的;
Nothing difficult, nothing burdensome have we been commanded, if we are willing;
13:264
but if we are not willing, even the easiest things will appear burdensome to us.
13:265
有甚麼比吃飯更容易的呢?可是許多人因著極大的懶惰,連這事也覺得厭煩;
What is easier than eating? Yet out of great sluggishness many are vexed even at this;
13:266
and I hear many saying that even eating is a labor.
13:267
這些事若是你願意,沒有一件是苦差;
None of these things is a labor, if you are willing;
13:268
for in the willing everything lies, after the grace from above.
13:269
Let us therefore will the good things, that we may also attain the eternal good things, by the grace and lovingkindness [of our Lord Jesus Christ].
