因為基督並不是進了人手所造的聖所(那不過是真聖所的表樣),乃是進了天堂本身,如今為我們顯在神的面前;
For Christ has not entered into holy places made with hands, which are figures of the true, but into heaven itself, now to appear before the face of God on our behalf;
17:2
也不是要多次將自己獻上,像那大祭司每年帶著別的血進入至聖所一樣;
nor yet that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters into the Holy of Holies every year with the blood of another;
17:3
若是這樣,祂從創世以來就必須多次受苦了;
for then must He often have suffered since the foundation of the world;
17:4
but now once, at the consummation of the ages, He has been manifested for the putting away of sin by the sacrifice of Himself.
17:5
The Jews greatly prided themselves upon the temple and the tabernacle.
17:6
For nowhere else on earth was such a temple built, neither for costliness, nor for beauty, nor for anything else whatever.
17:7
For God who ordained it commanded that it should be made with much magnificence, since those men also were drawn and attracted rather by things bodily.
17:8
因為它的牆上鑲有金磚;
For it had golden bricks in its walls;
17:9
and whoever wishes may learn this in the Second Book of Kingdoms and in Ezekiel, and how many talents of gold were then expended.
17:10
And the second building became more splendid, both for beauty and for all the rest.
17:11
它之所以尊貴,不僅在於此,也在於它是獨一的,並且在於它以其華美吸引萬人;
And it was venerable not for this alone, but also because it was one, and because it drew all men by its beauty;
17:12
for from the ends of the earth they came thither, whether from Babylon or from Ethiopia.
17:13
And declaring this, Luke said in the Acts:
17:14
And there were dwelling there Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, both Judaea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene.
17:15
Those then who were in every part of the world came together thither, and great was the fame of the temple.
17:16
那麼保羅怎樣行呢?正如他論到那些祭物一樣,在這裡他也照樣行;
What then does Paul do? As in the case of the sacrifices, so also here he acts;
17:17
for as there he set the death of Christ against them, so also here he sets the whole heaven against the temple.
17:18
他顯明其中的分別,不僅藉此一端,也藉著加上說:這位祭司乃是更親近神的;
And he showed the difference not by this alone, but also by adding that the Priest was become nearer to God;
17:19
for 'to appear,' he says, 'before the face of God.'
17:20
So that not by heaven alone, but also by the entrance, he made the matter venerable.
17:21
For not simply, as here, through symbols, but there He sees God Himself.
17:22
Do you see that everywhere the lowly things are spoken because of His condescension? Why then do you further wonder if He intercedes, seeing that He sets Him forth as a high priest? 'Nor yet that He should offer Himself often,' he says, 'as the high priest enters into the holy places every year with' [the blood of another].
17:23
'For Christ,' he says, 'is not entered into holy places made with hands, which are figures of the true.'
17:24
可見那些才是真的,而這些不過是預表;
Therefore those are the true things, but these are types;
17:25
for indeed the temple was so constructed, like the heaven of heaven.
17:26
What do you say? If He enter not into heaven, does He who is everywhere present, and fills all things, not appear? Do you see that all these things pertain to the flesh? 'And to appear,' he says, 'before the face of God for us.'
17:27
What is 'for us'? He ascended, he says, with a sacrifice which had power to propitiate the Father.
17:28
請告訴我,這是為甚麼呢?難道祂曾是那仇敵嗎?眾天使曾是仇敵,祂卻不是仇敵;
Wherefore, tell me? Was He then the enemy? The angels were enemies, He was not an enemy;
17:29
for that the angels were enemies, hear what he says.
17:30
「祂使地上的和天上的都和好了」;
'He made peace as to the things on earth, and the things in the heavens';
17:31
so that he well said that He also 'entered into heaven, now to appear before the face of God for us.'
17:32
Now He appears, but on our behalf.
17:33
'Nor yet that He should offer Himself often, as the high priest enters into the Holy of Holies every year with the blood of another.'
17:34
Do you see how many are the differences? For the 'often,' the 'once'; for the 'with the blood of another,' the 'with His own.'
17:35
He then is Himself both victim and priest.
17:36
'For then,' he says, 'must He often have suffered since the foundation of the world.'
17:37
Here he uncovers a certain doctrine, and says that if it were necessary to offer sacrifices often, it would have been necessary also to be crucified often.
17:38
'But now once, at the consummation of the ages.'
17:39
Why 'at the consummation of the ages'? After the many sins.
17:40
若這事發生在起初,而後來卻無人相信,那麼這救贖經綸的工作就毫無益處了;
If then it had happened at the beginning, and afterwards no one had believed, the work of the dispensation would have been unprofitable;
17:41
因為基督不該死第二次,好叫所切切追求的事得以如此成就;
for Christ ought not to die a second time, so that in this way also the thing which was earnestly sought might be accomplished;
17:42
but since afterwards the sins were many, He was with good reason then manifested.
17:43
'Where sin abounded, grace did much more abound.'
17:44
'But now,' he says, 'once, at the consummation of the ages, He has been manifested for the putting away of sin by the sacrifice of Himself.'
17:45
'And inasmuch as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment.'
17:46
他既已顯明祂不該多次死,如今又顯明祂為何只死一次;
Having shown that He ought not to die often, he now shows also why He died once;
17:47
because He became the ransom for one death.
17:48
'It was appointed,' he says, 'unto men once to die.'
17:49
This then, the 'He died once,' was on behalf of all men.
17:50
那又怎樣呢?我們豈不再死那死嗎?我們固然要死,卻不停留在其中;
What then? Do we no longer die that death? We die indeed, but we do not remain in it;
17:51
因為那才真是死的暴政、真是死,就是死了的人再不得回到生命裡;
for that is truly the tyranny of death and truly death, when it is no longer permitted to him that has died to return to life;
17:52
but when after dying one lives, and lives a better life, this is not death, but a falling asleep.
17:53
Since then death was about to hold all men fast, therefore He died, that He might deliver us.
17:54
'So Christ also, having been once offered.'
17:55
By whom offered? By Himself evidently.
17:56
Here he shows Him to be not only priest, but also offering and victim.
17:57
Then he adds the cause of the 'having been offered.'
17:58
'Having been once offered,' he says, 'to bear the sins of many.'
17:59
But why did he say 'of many,' and not 'of all'? Because not all believed.
17:60
因為就祂那一面而言,祂實在是為眾人死,好拯救眾人;
For He died indeed for all, so as to save all, so far as pertained to Him;
17:61
因為那一次的死足以抵償眾人的滅亡;
for that death was a counterweight to the perdition of all;
17:62
yet He did not bear the sins of all, because they themselves were not willing.
17:63
然而「擔當罪」是甚麼意思呢?正如在我們所獻的祭物中,我們也把罪呈上,說:「我們無論是有意還是無意所犯的罪,求祢赦免」;
But what is 'to bear sins'? Just as in the offering which we offer up, we bring forward also the sins, saying, 'Whether we have sinned willingly or unwillingly, forgive';
17:64
就是說,我們先題起這些罪,然後才求赦免;
that is, we first make mention of them, and then we ask for the forgiveness;
17:65
so indeed it came to pass here also.
17:66
Where did Christ do this? Hear Him saying:
17:67
'And for their sakes I sanctify Myself.'
17:68
看哪,祂擔當了眾罪;
Behold, He bore the sins;
17:69
He took them away from men, and bore them up to the Father, not that He might determine anything against them, but that He might forgive them.
17:70
'A second time, apart from sin, He shall appear,' he says, 'to them that wait for Him, unto salvation.'
17:71
What does 'without sin' mean? It means that He does not come to bear sin, nor will He come a second time on account of sin, so as to die again.
17:72
For neither did He who once died, die as one owing a debt of death.
17:73
How shall He appear? To punish, he says.
17:74
But he did not say this; rather, the joyful word: 'Without sin shall He appear to those who', he says.
17:75
who eagerly await Him unto salvation.
17:76
so that they no longer have any need of sacrifice in order to be saved, but accomplish this from works.
17:77
'For the law,' he says, 'having a shadow of the good things to come, not the very image of the things.'
17:78
That is, not the very truth itself.
17:79
因為只要人像作畫一般描摹輪廓、勾勒顏色,那不過是一種影兒;
For so long as one traces the colours around, as in a drawing, it is but a shadow;
17:80
but when one lays on the bloom of colour and applies the hues, then it becomes an image.
17:81
Such a thing also was the law.
17:82
'For the law,' he says, 'having a shadow of the good things to come, not the very image of the things.'
17:83
That is, of the sacrifice, of the remission.
17:84
'With the same sacrifices which they offer continually can never make perfect those who draw near.'
17:85
'For then would they not have ceased to be offered, because the worshippers, once purified, would have had no more consciousness of sins;'
17:86
'but in those sacrifices there is a remembrance made of sins year by year.'
17:87
'For it is impossible that the blood of bulls and goats should take away sins.'
17:88
'Wherefore, when He comes into the world, He says:'
17:89
'Sacrifice and offering You did not desire, but a body You have prepared for Me;'
17:90
'in whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin You had no pleasure.'
17:91
'Behold, I have come (in the volume of the book it is written of Me) to do Your will, O God.'
17:92
Having said above that 'Sacrifice and offering and whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin You did not desire, nor take pleasure in'—which are offered according to the law—
17:93
then he said, 'Behold, I have come to do Your will, O God.'
17:94
He takes away the first, that He may establish the second.
17:95
你再一次看見那超越之處嗎?他說,這祭物只有一個,而那些卻是許多;
Do you see again the surpassing excellence? This sacrifice, he says, is one; but those were many;
17:96
for on this very account they were not strong—because they were many.
17:97
For what need was there of many, tell me, when the one sufficed? So that the many, and their being offered continually, prove that they never cleansed those men.
17:98
因為正如一種藥,若是有效、能使人得健康、又能除去一切疾病,一次敷用便成就全功;
For just as a medicine, when it is potent and health-giving and able to remove every disease, once applied does the whole work;
17:99
它若一次敷用就成就了全功,就以不再需要敷用顯明自己的能力,而這不再需要敷用正是它的功效;
and if, once applied, it accomplishes the whole, it shows its own strength by no longer being applied, and this is its very work—that it is no longer applied;
17:100
但它若不斷被敷用,就顯明這是它毫無功效的記號;
but if it is applied continually, it is plain that this is a sign of its having no strength;
17:101
因為藥的優點乃在於一次敷用,而非屢次;
for the excellence of a medicine is to be applied once, and not many times;
17:102
既是如此,他們為何總是用同樣的祭物受醫治呢?他們若真已脫離了一切的罪,這些祭物就不必天天獻上了;
for why then are they ever being treated with the same sacrifices? For if they had been delivered from all their sins, the sacrifices would not have been offered day by day;
17:103
for indeed they were appointed to be offered continually on behalf of the whole people, both in the evening and in the day.
17:104
如此,所行的事乃是對罪的控訴,而非對罪的解除;
So that what took place was an accusation of sins, and not a loosing of sins;
17:105
an accusation of weakness, not a display of strength.
17:106
因為既然頭一個毫無功效,第二個便獻上了;
For since the first availed nothing, the second was offered;
17:107
而既然這個也一無所成,便又獻上另一個;
and since this accomplished nothing, yet another again;
17:108
so that it was a reproof of sins.
17:109
所以,獻祭這事乃是對罪的責備;
The being offered, then, is a reproof of sins;
17:110
and the being offered continually, a reproof of weakness.
17:111
但在基督的事上,情形卻正相反;
But in the case of Christ it is the contrary;
17:112
He was offered once, and sufficed for ever.
17:113
他稱那些事物為「表樣」(對型),實在是恰當的;
And he well called those things 'figures' (antitypes);
17:114
因此它只有樣式,卻沒有那能力;
therefore it has only the figure, but not also the strength;
17:115
just as in the case of portraits, the image has the figure of the man, but not his strength.
17:116
如此,真體與樣式二者彼此有相通之處;
So that the truth and the figure share something in common with each other;
17:117
for the figure is the same, but the strength is no longer so.
17:118
在天和帳幕的事上也是這樣;
So too in the case of heaven and of the tabernacle;
17:119
因為樣式是一樣的,因它們都是聖物;
for the figure was the same, for they were holy things;
17:120
but the power and the rest were not the same.
17:121
這話是什麼意思:「祂藉著獻自己為祭,把罪除掉了,就顯明出來」?「除掉」是什麼意思呢?就是輕視;
What does this mean: 'For the putting away of sin He has been manifested through His sacrifice'? What is 'putting away'? That is, contempt;
17:122
因為罪不再有膽量了;
for sin no longer has boldness;
17:123
怎麼說呢?罪本該受刑罰,卻沒有受著;
How so? Though it ought to have received punishment, yet it did not receive it;
17:124
when it expected to destroy all, then was it itself destroyed.
17:125
他說:「祂藉著獻自己為祭而顯明出來」;
'Through His sacrifice,' he says, 'He has been manifested';
17:126
that is, He was made manifest to God and drew near.
17:127
所以,不要因為祭司一年多次行這事,就以為這是隨隨便便行的,而非因著軟弱才行的;
Therefore, because the priest did this many times in the year, do not suppose that it was done simply, and not on account of weakness;
17:128
for if it were not on account of weakness, why then was it done at all? For where there are no wounds, there is no further need of medicines for him who attends to them.
17:129
For this reason, he says, He commanded that offering be made continually, on account of weakness, and so that a remembrance of sins might take place.
17:130
What then? Do not we offer day by day? We do indeed offer, but making a remembrance
17:131
記念祂的死;
of His death;
17:132
and this is one, and not many.
17:133
How one, and not many? Because it was offered once, like that offering into the Holy of Holies.
17:134
這是那的樣式,那也是這的樣式;
This is a figure of that, and this of that;
17:135
因為我們所獻的總是同一位,不是今日獻一隻羊、明日獻另一隻,乃是總獻同一位;
for we ever offer the same One, not now one sheep and tomorrow another, but ever the same;
17:136
Otherwise, by this reasoning, since He is offered in many places, are there also many Christs? By no means; but Christ is one everywhere, being complete here and complete there, one body.
17:137
As therefore, though offered in many places, He is one body and not many bodies, so also is there one sacrifice.
17:138
That One is our High Priest, who offered the sacrifice that cleanses us.
17:139
That very one we offer even now—the one then offered, which is inexhaustible.
17:140
這是為著記念那時所成就的事而行的;
This is done in remembrance of what was then accomplished;
17:141
'For this do ye,' He says, 'in remembrance of Me.'
17:142
我們並不像從前的大祭司那樣獻上另一種祭物,而是常常獻上同一個祭;
We do not offer another sacrifice, as the high priest did of old, but ever the same one;
17:143
or rather, we accomplish a remembrance of the sacrifice.
17:144
但既然我提到了這祭,我願向你們這些已受過奧祕之教的人說幾句話——分量雖少,卻有極大的力量與益處;
But since I have made mention of this sacrifice, I wish to say a few words to you who have been initiated—few in measure, yet possessing great force and profit;
17:145
for the things spoken are not ours, but those of the divine Spirit.
17:146
What then is it? Many partake of this sacrifice once in the whole year, others twice, and others many times.
17:147
所以我們的講論是對眾人說的,不只是對在此的人,也是對那些住在曠野裡的人;
Our discourse therefore is to all, not only to those here present, but also to those who sit in the desert;
17:148
for they partake once in the year, and often even once in two years.
17:149
What then? Whom shall we approve? Those who do it once? Those who do it often? Those who do it seldom? Neither those who do it once, nor those who do it often, nor those who do it seldom, but those who come with a pure conscience, with a pure heart, with a blameless life.
17:150
願這樣的人常常前來;
Let such as these ever draw near;
17:151
but those who are not such, not even once.
17:152
Why so? Because they receive to themselves judgment, and condemnation, and chastisement, and punishment.
17:153
因為食物本性雖能滋養,但若進入一個敗壞不能消化的腸胃,就會敗壞、毀掉一切,反成為疾病的緣由;
For just as food, though by nature nourishing, if it fall into a stomach that is out of order, ruins and corrupts everything, and becomes an occasion of disease;
17:154
so it is also with these awful mysteries.
17:155
Thou enjoyest a spiritual table, a royal table, and again dost thou defile thy mouth with mire? Thou art anointed with fragrant ointment, and again dost thou fill thyself with foul stench? Tell me, I pray thee, when after a year thou partakest of the Communion, dost thou think the forty days sufficient for thee to cleanse away the sins of the whole time? And then, when a week has passed, dost thou give thyself back to thy former ways? Tell me now, if after being restored to health for forty days from a long sickness, thou wert again to give thyself to those foods that breed disease, hast thou not lost thy former labour also? It is quite plain that thou hast.
17:156
For if things natural undergo change, much more do things of the will.
17:157
我們按本性能看見,也按本性有健康的眼睛;
By nature we see, and we have healthy eyes according to nature;
17:158
but oftentimes our power of sight is injured by an ill habit of body.
17:159
If then things that come from nature undergo change, shall not those that come from the will do so much more? Thou assignest forty days to the health of thy soul—perhaps not even forty—and dost thou expect to propitiate God? Thou art trifling, O man.
17:160
These things I say, not to hinder you from the one yearly approach, but rather desiring that you should continually draw near to the holy things.
17:161
For this reason the priest at that time cries aloud, calling upon the holy, and by this cry, as it were scrutinizing all for blemish, so that no one may approach unprepared.
17:162
因為正如在一群羊中,許多羊是健康的,許多卻長滿了疥癬,必須把這些與健康的隔開;
For just as in a flock, where many sheep are sound but many are full of scab, it is needful for these to be separated from the sound ones;
17:163
so also in the Church, since some are healthy sheep and others diseased, by this cry the priest separates the one from the other, going everywhere by this most awful cry, calling and drawing the holy.
17:164
因為一個人既是人,就不可能知道鄰舍內心的事;
For since it is not possible, being a man, to know the things of one's neighbour;
17:165
'For what man knoweth the things of a man,' he says, 'save the spirit of the man which is in him?' He utters this cry after the whole sacrifice has been completed, so that no one may come to the spiritual fountain simply and at random.
17:166
Of a flock (for nothing hinders using the same illustration again) we shut up the diseased within, and keep them in darkness, and give them other food, allowing them to partake neither of pure air, nor of clean grass, nor of the fountain outside.
17:167
Here too then this cry is instead of a kind of bond.
17:168
Thou canst not say, 'I knew not, I was ignorant that danger follows upon the matter;'
17:169
for indeed Paul above all bore witness to this.
17:170
但你會說:「我沒有讀過。」這不是辯解,反倒是控告;
But thou wilt say, 'I did not read it.' This is no defence, but rather an accusation;
17:171
every day thou enterest into the church, and dost thou still know not this? (5)
17:172
Yet, that thou mayest not have even this to allege as a pretext, for this reason with a loud voice, with an awful cry, like a herald lifting his hand on high, standing aloft, made conspicuous to all, and crying out mightily amid that awful stillness, the priest calls some and repels others—doing this not with the hand, but with the tongue, more plainly than with the hand.
17:173
For that voice, falling upon our hearing, like a hand thrusts some forth and casts them out, but brings others in and presents them.
17:174
Tell me now, I pray thee, in the Olympic games does not the herald stand crying with a loud and lofty voice, 'If any one accuses this man, saying, is he not a slave? is he not a thief? is he not of wicked ways?' And yet those contests are neither of the soul nor of good character, but of strength and body.
17:175
既然在鍛鍊身體之處尚且有這樣對意志的察驗,何況在此,靈魂全然競賽之處呢?所以就是如今,我們的傳令者也照樣站著,並非各自抓住每人的頭牽引出去,而是一同抓住那內在的頭;
If then, where there is exercise of bodies, there is so much scrutiny of the will, how much more here, where the whole soul contends? So then even now our herald stands, not holding each one by the head and leading him aside, but holding all together by the head that is within;
17:176
他並不派別人來作他們的控告者,乃是叫他們自己控告自己;
he sets no others over them as accusers, but themselves against themselves;
17:177
for he says not, 'Does any one accuse this man?' but what? 'If any one accuses himself.'
17:178
For when he says, 'Holy things for the holy,' this is what he means:
17:179
'If any one is not holy, let him not approach.'
17:180
他並非單單說「脫離了罪的」,而是說「聖潔的」;
He says not simply, 'pure from sins,' but, 'holy;'
17:181
for it is not the mere putting away of sins that makes one holy, but also the presence of the Spirit, and the wealth of good works.
17:182
'I would not,' he says, 'that ye should merely be freed from the mire, but that ye should also be white and comely.'
17:183
因為連巴比倫王,從被擄的人中挑選少年時,尚且揀選那些身形俊美、容貌姣好的;
For if the king of Babylon, choosing out from among the captives the young men, selected those fair in form and comely in appearance;
17:184
much more must we, who stand at the royal table, be fair in the form of the soul, having the golden ornament, the clean robe, the royal sandals, the face of the soul beautiful, the golden adornment set about it, the girdle of truth.
17:185
Let such a one approach, and touch the royal cups.
17:186
But if any one, clothed in rags, filthy and squalid, should wish to come in to the royal table, see how much he shall suffer, since the forty days do not suffice to wash away the transgressions committed in all the time.
17:187
For if hell is not enough—and yet it is eternal (for on this account it is even eternal)—much more this short time.
17:188
For we have shown no strong repentance, but a weak one.
17:189
太監尤其當侍立在君王身旁;
The eunuchs above all must stand beside the king;
17:190
I mean the eunuchs, those who are white in mind, having no stain nor spot, lofty in mind, having the eye of the soul gentle and keen-sighted, quick to turn and vigorous, but neither drowsy nor supine, full of much freedom, far indeed from shamelessness and effrontery, wakeful, sound, neither too gloomy and downcast, nor dissolute and languid.
17:191
This eye we have power to fashion, and to make keen-sighted and beautiful.
17:192
For when we lead it not toward the smoke, nor toward the dust (for all human affairs are such), but toward the fine breeze, toward the light air, toward the things on high and lofty, full of much stillness and purity and much delight, we shall quickly restore it, and strengthen it as it revels in such a sight.
17:193
你看見了貪婪,看見有人擁有許多財富嗎?不要把你的眼睛引到那裡去;
Hast thou seen covetousness, and one possessing much wealth? Lead not thither thine eye;
17:194
那事乃是污泥、是煙、是惡臭的蒸氣、是黑暗;
the thing is mire, it is smoke, an evil vapour, darkness;
17:195
and much straitness, and a choking of cares.
17:196
你看見有人操練公義、以自己所有的為足、享有極大安舒的空間、無所憂慮、對此世的事無所掛慮嗎?把他放在那裡,將他高高舉起;
Hast thou seen a man practising righteousness, content with his own, and having much spaciousness of ease, anxious for nothing, careful for nothing of the things here? Set him there, and lift him up on high;
17:197
and thou shalt make him far more beautiful and more radiant, feasting him not on the flowers of the earth, but on those of virtue—on self-control, on gentleness, and on all the rest.
17:198
因為沒有什麼比邪惡的良心更能攪擾眼睛的了;
For nothing so troubles the eye as an evil conscience;
17:199
'Mine eye,' he says, 'was troubled because of wrath;'
17:200
Rid it of this injury, and thou shalt make it bright and strong, ever nourished with good hopes.
17:201
願我們眾人都能使這一項以及靈魂其餘的一切機能,都成為基督所願要的樣式;
And may it be that all of us make both this and the other energies of the soul such as Christ wills;
17:202
that, having become worthy of the Head that is set over us, we may depart whither He wills.
17:203
'I will that where I am, they also may be with Me, that they may behold My glory;'
17:204
which may it be that all of us enjoy, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father and the Holy Spirit be glory, might, honour, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
