他在上文說:「祭物和禮物、燔祭和贖罪祭,是你不願意的,也不喜歡的」,就是那些按律法所獻上的;
Having said above that 'sacrifice and offering and whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin Thou didst not desire, neither hadst pleasure therein,' which are offered according to the Law;
18:2
'Lo, I come to do Thy will, O God.'
18:3
He taketh away the first, that He may establish the second.
18:4
By which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
18:5
'And every priest indeed standeth day by day ministering, and offering oftentimes the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins;'
18:6
'but this Man, having offered one sacrifice for sins, for ever sat down on the right hand of God, henceforth waiting till His enemies be made the footstool of His feet.'
18:7
In what preceded, he showed that the sacrifices were unprofitable for perfect purification, that they were a type, and that they fell far short.
18:8
既然有人以此反駁他說:倘若它們是預表,那麼真理既已來到,它們為何沒有止息、也沒有退去,反倒仍舊在施行呢?他在此處正是要處理這一點,指明它們已不再被施行了;
Since then this objection was raised against him—if they are types, how is it that, when the truth had come, they did not cease nor give way, but are still being performed?—he works out precisely this very point here, showing that they are no longer being performed;
18:9
nor even as a type; for God does not accept them.
18:10
And this he shows once more, not from the New Testament, but from the prophets, bringing forward from of old the strongest testimony, that they come to an end and cease, and that men do all this to no purpose, ever resisting the Holy Spirit.
18:11
他更充分地指明,它們止息不僅是在如今,甚至是在基督降臨之時──更確切地說,甚至在祂降臨之前──並且基督並非最後才廢除它們,乃是它們先被廢除,然後祂才來到;
And he shows abundantly that they had ceased not merely now, but even at the very coming of Christ—or rather, even before His coming—and how Christ did not abolish them last of all, but they were abolished first, and then He came;
18:12
they were first brought to an end, and then He Himself came.
18:13
For lest they should say, 'Even apart from this sacrifice we were able to please God,' He waited for these to be convicted through those very things, and then He Himself came.
18:14
'For sacrifice and offering,' he says, 'You did not desire.'
18:15
And having spoken generally, he speaks also particularly:
18:16
'In whole burnt offerings and offerings for sin You took no pleasure.'
18:17
Now the 'offering' was everything apart from the sacrifice.
18:18
Concerning whom was this said? Concerning none other than Christ.
18:19
在此他並不責備那些獻祭的人,這表明神不悅納它們,並不是因著他們的惡行──正如他在別處所說的那樣;
Here he brings no charge against those who offered, showing that it is not on account of their wickedness that He does not accept them, as he says elsewhere;
18:20
but because the matter had at length been proven and made manifest to have no strength, nor any fitting occasion.
18:21
What then has this to do with the sacrifices being offered repeatedly? 'It is not from their being offered repeatedly alone,' he says, 'that it is plain they are weak and accomplished nothing, but also from the fact that God does not accept them, as being useless and unprofitable.'
18:22
Showing this very thing, he says also in another place, 'If You had desired sacrifice, I would have given it.'
18:23
So then, by this also he makes plain that He does not desire it.
18:24
So then, the sacrifices are not the will of
18:25
神的旨意乃是廢除祭物;
God, but rather the doing away with the sacrifices.
18:26
Therefore they sacrifice contrary to His will.
18:27
What is the meaning of 'To do Your will'? 'To give Myself up,' he says.
18:28
'By which will we have been sanctified.'
18:29
Further, by this he shows also in another way that it is not the sacrifices that cleanse men, but the will of God.
18:30
So then, to sacrifice is not the will of God.
18:31
如果連起初也不是神的旨意,你何必希奇如今它不是神的旨意呢?他說:「誰向你們要這些呢?」那麼祂自己為何又吩咐了呢?乃是俯就人的緣故;
And why do you marvel if now it is not the will of God, when even from the beginning it was not His will? 'For who has required these things at your hands?' he says. How then did He Himself command it? By way of condescension;
18:32
just as Paul too is seen to say:
18:33
'I wish that all men were even as I myself in self-control;'
18:34
and again, exhorting in another place, he says:
18:35
'I desire that the younger women marry, bear children.'
18:36
他提出兩種意願,但這兩種並非都是他自己的,儘管他都吩咐了;
He sets down two wills, but the two are not both his own, even though he enjoins them;
18:37
其中一種確是他自己的,因此他毫不附帶理由地提出;
rather, the one is his own, wherefore he sets it down without a reason;
18:38
but the other is not his own, even though he wishes it, wherefore it is added along with a reason.
18:39
For having first accused them, that they had grown wanton against Christ, he then says:
18:40
'I desire that the younger women marry, bear children.'
18:41
同樣,在此處他也是以俯就的方式來安排;
So indeed here also he orders things by way of condescension;
18:42
it was not His will, as a primary purpose, that the sacrifices should take place.
18:43
So too when speaking concerning death:
18:44
'I do not desire the death of the sinner, but rather that he should turn and live.'
18:45
他在別處又說,神不僅願意,甚至切切渴慕這事;
And in another place he says that He not only willed, but even earnestly desired this;
18:46
然而這些話彼此似乎是相反的;
and yet these things seem contrary to one another;
18:47
for 'willing' is desire intensified.
18:48
How then, though not willing, do you elsewhere desire it—which is a sign of willing exceedingly? This same thing may be said here also.
18:49
'By which will we have been sanctified,' he says.
18:50
And in what way we are sanctified, he himself will explain, adding:
18:51
'Through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.'
18:52
'And every priest stands daily ministering, and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices.'
18:53
如此,站著乃是事奉的表記;
So then, to stand is a sign of ministering;
18:54
therefore to be seated is a sign of being ministered unto.
18:55
'But this One, having offered a single sacrifice for sins, sat down forever at the right hand of God, henceforth waiting until His enemies be made a footstool for His feet.'
18:56
'For by a single offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.'
18:57
'And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us.'
18:58
他說過那些祭物不再被獻上;
He said that those sacrifices are not offered;
18:59
他從成文的和不成文的兩方面加以推論;
he reasoned it out from the written and from the unwritten;
18:60
and besides, he set forth also an express prophetic saying, that 'Sacrifice and offering You did not desire.'
18:61
He said that He forgave the sins.
18:62
這一點他又再次用成文的見證來加以證實;
This too he again confirms from written testimony;
18:63
'For the Holy Spirit,' he says, 'bears witness to us.'
18:64
For after saying, 'This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: I will put My laws upon their hearts, and upon their minds I will inscribe them, and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.'
18:65
'Now where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.'
18:66
如此看來,神賜下這約的時候,就赦免了眾罪;
So then, He forgave the sins when He gave the covenant;
18:67
and the covenant He gave through the sacrifice.
18:68
If then He forgave the sins through the one sacrifice, there is no longer need of a second.
18:69
'He sat down at the right hand of God, henceforth waiting.'
18:70
And for what reason the delay? 'That His enemies be placed under His feet.'
18:71
'For by a single offering,' he says, 'He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.'
18:72
And for what reason did He not place them immediately? For the sake of the faithful who are yet to be brought forth and born.
18:73
Whence then is it plain that they will be placed there? From His saying that 'He sat down.'
18:74
He again called to mind that testimony which says:
18:75
'Until He make His enemies a footstool under His feet.'
18:76
And His enemies are the Jews.
18:77
Then, since he had said, 'Until his enemies be made his footstool,' and they were pressing on with great urgency,
18:78
for this reason he sets down after these words all that he discourses concerning faith.
18:79
But who are the enemies, if not all the unbelievers, and the demons? For surely it is not the Jews only. And hinting at the fullness of the subjection, he did not say, 'Let them be subjected,' but, 'Let them be made a footstool under his feet.'
18:80
所以,我們不要成為仇敵中的一員;
Let us not, then, become of the number of the enemies;
18:81
for those enemies are not only the unbelievers and the Jews, but also these who are full of an unclean life.
18:82
因為體貼肉體的心思,就是與神為仇;
For the mind of the flesh is enmity against God;
18:83
for it is not subject to the law of God.
18:84
那麼怎樣呢?有人說:這豈不是一項該受責的罪咎麼?的確,這正是極該受責的罪咎;
What then? one says: is this not a charge to be answered for? Indeed, it is very much a charge to be answered for;
18:85
因為惡人,只要他仍是惡人,就不能降服;
for the wicked man, so long as he remains wicked, cannot be subject;
18:86
yet he is able to change and to become good.
18:87
Let us therefore cast out the mindings of the flesh.
18:88
屬肉體的又是那些事呢?就是凡叫身體興旺、享受安逸,卻敗壞靈魂的事;
And what sort of things are those of the flesh? Whatever makes the body flourish and enjoy pleasure, but harms the soul;
18:89
財富、奢華、榮耀;
wealth, luxury, glory;
18:90
all these are of the flesh.
18:91
所以,我們不要貪愛豐富,倒要常常追求貧窮;
Let us then not be enamoured of abundance, but let us ever pursue poverty;
18:92
'But,' one says, 'it makes a man lowly and of no account.'
18:93
for this contributes much to us.
18:94
'Poverty,' it says, 'humbles a man;'
18:95
'Blessed are the poor in spirit.'
18:96
Is it for this reason then that you grieve, because you have a road that leads you by the hand toward virtue? Do you not know that this gives us much boldness? 'But,' one says, 'the wisdom of the poor man is despised;'
18:97
and again another says:
18:98
'Give me neither riches nor poverty;'
18:99
'Deliver me from the furnace of poverty.'
18:100
But again, how is it, if riches and poverty are from the Lord, that poverty—or riches—should be an evil? For what reason then were these things said? These were spoken under the Old Covenant, where much was made of wealth, where there was great contempt for poverty, where the one was a curse and the other a blessing.
18:101
But do you wish to hear the praises of poverty? Christ himself embraced it, and says:
18:102
'But the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.'
18:103
And again he said to the disciples:
18:104
'Do not acquire gold, nor silver, nor two tunics.'
18:105
And Paul, writing, said:
18:106
'As having nothing, and yet possessing all things.'
18:107
And Peter said to the man lame from birth:
18:108
'Silver and gold I do not have.'
18:109
甚至在舊約本身,那看重財富的地方,請告訴我,那些受人敬佩的是誰呢?豈不是以利亞,那除了一件皮外衣以外一無所有的人麼?豈不是以利沙,豈不是約翰麼?所以,誰也不要因貧窮而灰心喪志;
And even in the Old Covenant itself, where wealth was admired, who, tell me, were the ones held in admiration? Was it not Elijah, who had nothing except his sheepskin mantle? Was it not Elisha, was it not John? Let no one, therefore, be cast down because of poverty;
18:110
it is not poverty that makes a man lowly, but wealth, which compels him to stand in need of many things, and forces him to be beholden with thanks to many.
18:111
For tell me, what was poorer than Jacob, who said:
18:112
'If the Lord will give me bread to eat, and a garment to put on'? Now, were those about Elijah and John devoid of boldness? Did not the one reprove Ahab, and the other Herod? The latter said:
18:113
'It is not lawful for you to have the wife of your brother Philip;'
18:114
and Elijah said to Ahab with boldness:
18:115
'It is not I who trouble Israel, but you and your father's house.'
18:116
你看見貧窮反倒生出這坦然無懼麼?因為富人是奴僕,容易受虧損,並且給每一個想加害他的人以下手的機會;
Do you see that poverty rather produces this boldness? For the rich man is a slave, being liable to loss, and affording to everyone who wishes it the means of doing him harm;
18:117
but he who has nothing fears neither confiscation nor condemnation.
18:118
If, then, poverty made men devoid of boldness, Christ would not have sent his disciples in poverty into a work that required much boldness.
18:119
For the poor man is exceedingly strong, and there is no place from which he may be wronged or suffer ill.
18:120
然而富人卻是四面八方都容易被制伏;
The rich man, however, is on every side easy to overpower;
18:121
and the same thing happens as when one might easily catch a man who is trailing many long ropes behind him, but could not readily seize hold of a man who is naked.
18:122
在富人的事上,這裏也是如此;
So it is here too in the case of the rich man;
18:123
slaves, gold, fields, ten thousand affairs, ten thousand cares, circumstances, necessities make him easy for all to overpower.
18:124
Let no one, then, any longer consider poverty to be a cause of dishonour.
18:125
For if virtue be present, all the wealth of the world is not even so much as mire, nor a straw, in comparison with it.
18:126
Let us, then, pursue this, if we would enter into the kingdom of heaven.
18:127
For 'sell,' he says, 'your possessions, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven;'
18:128
'It is hard for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of heaven.'
18:129
你看見貧窮即或不在,也當自己去把它引來麼?貧窮乃是何等大的福益;
Do you see that even when it is not present, poverty must be drawn to oneself? So great a good is poverty;
18:130
for it is a kind of guiding hand upon the road that leads to heaven, an athlete's anointing oil, a great and marvellous training, a calm and sheltered harbour.
18:131
'But I have need of many things,' one says, 'and I do not wish to receive a favour from anyone;'
18:132
but even in this the rich man is worse off than you.
18:133
while he shamelessly begs on behalf of ten thousand matters, on behalf of covetousness.
18:134
So that it is the rich who are the ones in need of many things.
18:135
我何必說需求許多東西呢?他們甚至常常需求那些配不上他們的人;
Why do I say of many things? And often of persons unworthy of themselves;
18:136
they often come to stand in need of the soldiers in the ranks and of slaves.
18:137
但窮人連皇帝本身都不需求,即或有所需求,他也因甘願落到這地步而受人敬佩,因為他本可以富足;
But the poor man has need not even of the emperor himself, and if he should have need, he is admired for having brought himself to this, when it was in his power to be rich;
18:138
let no one, then, blame poverty as being the cause of ten thousand evils, nor speak against Christ, who declared this to be the perfection of virtue, saying:
18:139
Εἰ θέ.
'If you would be perfect;'
18:140
for this he himself both said by his words, and showed by his deeds, and taught through his disciples.
18:141
for this is a very great good to those who are watchful.
18:142
Perhaps some of the hearers even take it as an ill omen.
18:143
This disease is widespread among the greater part of mankind, and so great is the tyranny of riches, that they cannot endure even to the point of words to decline it, but even regard this as an ill omen.
18:144
願這些事遠離基督徒的魂;
Far be these things from the soul of the Christian;
18:145
for nothing is richer than the man who chooses poverty willingly and with eagerness.
18:146
and, if you please, I declare the man who willingly chooses poverty to be richer even than the emperor himself.
18:147
因為那人需用甚多,滿懷憂慮,惟恐軍中糧餉短缺;
For that man stands in need of many things, and is full of anxiety, and dreads lest his supply of soldier's rations should fail him;
18:148
but this other man has all things in abundance, and dreads nothing; and if he does dread, it is not for such great matters.
18:149
Who then, tell me, is the rich man — he who day by day is exacting payment, and is eager to gather much, and dreads lest at some time his store should fail;
18:150
還是那一無所積、卻大有豐足、一無所缺的人呢?因為賜下坦然無懼之心的,乃是德行與敬畏神,並非錢財;
or he who gathers nothing, yet is in great abundance and needs nothing? For it is virtue and the fear of God that give confidence, not riches;
18:151
for these rather bring men into bondage.
18:152
For, it says, 'Bribes and gifts blind the eyes of the wise, and like a muzzle in the mouth they turn aside reproofs.'
18:153
Consider how that poor man Peter chastised Ananias the rich.
18:154
Was not the one rich and the other poor? Yet behold, this one speaking with authority and saying, 'Tell me, did you sell the land for so much?' while the other answered with hesitation, 'Yes, for so much.'
18:155
有人說:誰能叫我像彼得一樣呢?只要你肯拋棄你所有的,你就能像彼得一樣;
And who will grant me, one says, to be like Peter? It is possible for you to be like Peter, if you are willing to cast away what you have;
18:156
scatter abroad, give to the poor, follow Christ, and you shall be such a one.
18:157
How so? one says: he wrought signs.
18:158
Was this then, tell me, what made Peter admirable, or the confidence that came from his manner of life? Do you not hear Christ saying,
18:159
'Do not rejoice that the demons are subject to you'?
18:160
'If you would be perfect, sell what you possess, and give to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven.'
18:161
Hear too what Peter says:
18:162
'Silver and gold have I none;'
18:163
'but what I have, that I give you.'
18:164
If anyone has silver and gold, he does not have those other things.
18:165
有人說:那麼為何許多人既沒有那些、也沒有這些呢?因為他們並非甘心情願地貧窮;
Why then, one says, do many have neither those things nor these? Because they are not poor of their own will;
18:166
since those who are poor by their own choice possess all good things.
18:167
因為他們縱然不能叫死人復活,也不能叫瘸子行走,但那勝過這一切的,就是他們在神面前有坦然無懼的心;
For even if they do not raise the dead nor make the lame to walk, yet — what is greater than all — they have confidence toward God;
18:168
in that day they shall hear that blessed voice which says,
18:169
'Come, you blessed of my Father.'
18:170
What is better than this? 'Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.'
18:171
「因為我餓了,你們給我喫;
'For I was hungry, and you gave me to eat;'
18:172
我渴了,你們給我喝;
'I was thirsty, and you gave me to drink;'
18:173
我作客旅,你們留我住;
'I was a stranger, and you took me in;'
18:174
我赤身露體,你們給我穿;
'I was naked, and you clothed me;'
18:175
'I was sick, and in prison, and you visited me.'
18:176
'Inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.'
18:177
所以我們要逃避貪婪,好使我們得著諸天的國;
Let us therefore flee covetousness, that we may attain the kingdom of heaven;
18:178
let us feed the poor, that we may feed Christ, that we may become fellow-heirs with Him, in Christ Jesus our Lord, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
