Having therefore, brethren, confidence to enter into the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way which He has consecrated for us through the veil, that is to say, His flesh, and having a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our body washed with pure water; let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering.
19:2
Having shown how great is the difference of the high priest, and of the sacrifices, and of the tabernacle, and of the covenant, and of the promise — and how great the distance between them, since the one set of things is temporary, the other eternal; the one near to vanishing away, the other abiding; the one paltry, the other perfect; the one types, the other the truth —
19:3
'For not according to a law of a carnal commandment,' he says, 'but according to the power of an indestructible life;'
19:4
「你是永遠為祭司的」(看哪,這祭司的永存不絕);
'You are a priest for ever' (behold the perpetuity of the priest);
19:5
'For that which is becoming old and aging is near to vanishing away;'
19:6
但這約是新的,並且有罪的赦免;
but this covenant is new, and has remission of sins;
19:7
'For the law,' he says, 'made nothing perfect;'
19:8
'Sacrifice and offering you did not desire;'
19:9
那一個帳幕是人手所造的,這一個卻不是人手所造的;
and the one tabernacle was made with hands, but this one not made with hands;
19:10
那一個是用山羊的血,這一個卻是用主的血;
and the one had the blood of goats, but this one the blood of the Master;
19:11
那一個是祭司站著,這一個卻是坐著;
and the one had the priest standing, but this one seated;
19:12
since then all those things were inferior, and these greater, therefore he says,
19:13
'Having therefore, brethren, confidence.'
19:14
Confidence from whence? From the remission.
19:15
因為正如罪過生出羞愧,照樣,這一切都得赦免,就為我們生出坦然無懼的心;
For just as sins, he says, produce shame, so the being forgiven all these produces confidence for us;
19:16
and not only this, but also our becoming fellow-heirs, and enjoying so great a love.
19:17
'For the entrance into the holy places.'
19:18
What does he here call the entrance? Heaven, and the approach unto the things that are spiritual.
19:19
就是說,那條祂所預備、又親自起首的路;
That is, the way which He prepared, and of which He made a beginning;
19:20
因為所謂開創,此後就是指開始使用而言;
for consecration (dedication) means, henceforth, the beginning of its use;
19:21
the way, he says, which He prepared, and through which He Himself walked.
19:22
Here he sets forth the full assurance of hope.
19:23
He strives to show that they have obtained all the greater things, seeing that now the gates of heaven have been opened, which did not happen even in Abraham's case.
19:24
And well does he say, 'A new and living way;'
19:25
for the first way was one of death, leading to Hades, but this one leads to life.
19:26
And he did not say, 'Of life,' but he called it 'living,' thus showing that it abides.
19:27
'Through the veil,' he says, 'that is, His flesh.'
19:28
這肉體首先為祂開通了那條路,就是祂所說祂所開創的,因為祂自己俯就藉著這肉體行過;
This flesh first cut open for Him that way which He also says He consecrated, in that He Himself deigned to walk through it;
19:29
他稱這肉體為幔子,也是理所當然的;
and with good reason did he call the flesh a veil;
19:30
for when it was taken up on high, then the things in the heavens were made manifest.
19:31
'Let us draw near,' he says, 'with a true heart.' Who are we to draw near? Whoever is holy in faith, in spiritual worship.
19:32
'With a true heart, in full assurance of faith;'
19:33
that is, since nothing is visible — neither the priest, nor the sacrifice, nor the altar is seen.
19:34
And yet even that priest was not visible, but he himself stood within, while all those others, the whole people, were outside.
19:35
但他在此所顯明的,不僅是這一點,就是祭司已經進入聖所;
But here he shows not only this, that the priest has entered into the holy places;
19:36
for this he declares by saying,
19:37
'And a great priest over the house of God;'
19:38
but also that we ourselves enter in.
19:39
For this reason he says, 'In full assurance of faith.'
19:40
For it is possible even to believe while doubting.
19:41
For instance, there are many even now who say that for some there is a resurrection, but for others there is not.
19:42
But this is not the full assurance of faith.
19:43
For we ought so to believe as concerning things that are seen.
19:44
For here indeed it is possible to be deceived in the things that are seen, but there it is not.
19:45
And here we entrust ourselves to sense-perception, but there to the Spirit.
19:46
'Having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience.'
19:47
Here he shows that not faith alone, but also a virtuous life is required, and that we should be conscious of nothing evil within ourselves.
19:48
For the holy things do not receive those who are not thus disposed with full assurance.
19:49
For they are holy, even the Holy of Holies.
19:50
Therefore here no human being is present.
19:51
They sprinkled the body, but we the conscience.
19:52
So that it is possible even now to be sprinkled all around, but by virtue itself.
19:53
'And having our body washed with pure water.'
19:54
By the washing here he means that which is not a cleansing of bodies, but of the soul.
19:55
'For he who promised is faithful.'
19:56
And in what respect is he who promised faithful? In that we must depart thither and enter into the kingdom.
19:57
Do not therefore be over-curious, nor demand reasonings.
19:58
Our affairs require faith.
19:59
'And let us consider one another,' he says, 'to provoke unto love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is, but exhorting one another.'
19:60
'And so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.'
19:61
'The Lord is at hand; be careful for nothing.'
19:62
For now our salvation is nearer.
19:63
'The time henceforth is short.'
19:64
What is meant by 'Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together'? He knows that from being together and from assembling there is great strength.
19:65
'For where two or three,' he says, 'are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them.'
19:66
'That they may be one, even as we also are one.'
19:67
'The heart and soul of them all was one.'
19:68
And not for this reason only, but because the things of love also are increased through the assembling together.
19:69
And when love increases, of necessity the things of God also follow.
19:70
'And prayer,' he says, 'was made without ceasing by the people.'
19:71
Here he did not only exhort, but also rebuked.
19:72
'And let us consider one another,' he says, 'to provoke unto love and good works.'
19:73
He knows that this too comes about from their assembling together.
19:74
For just as iron sharpens iron, so also being together increases love.
19:75
For if a stone rubbed against a stone gives off fire, how much more soul mingled with soul? Consider:
19:76
he did not say 'unto envy,' but 'unto the provoking of love.'
19:77
What is meant by 'unto the provoking of love'? Unto loving and being loved the more.
19:78
And he adds, 'and of good works,' so as to receive zeal.
19:79
For if doing, he says, has greater force than speaking for the purpose of teaching,
19:80
you too have many teachers among the multitude who do this by their works.
19:81
What is meant by 'Let us draw near with a true heart'? That is, without hypocrisy.
19:82
'For woe to a fearful heart, and to slack hands.'
19:83
Let there be, he says, no falsehood in you.
19:84
Let us not say one thing and think another.
19:85
For this is not the mark of a true heart.
19:86
For faint-heartedness comes from not believing.
19:87
But how shall this come to be? If we bring ourselves to full assurance through faith.
19:88
'Having our hearts sprinkled.'
19:89
Why did he not say 'Having been cleansed,' but 'Having been sprinkled'? Because he wishes to show the difference of the sprinklings, and that the one is God's work, but the other ours.
19:90
For the washing and sprinkling of the conscience is God's work,
19:91
but to draw near with truth and in full assurance of faith is ours.
19:92
Then he also gives strength to faith from the truthfulness of him who promised.
19:93
What is meant by 'And having our body washed with pure water'? He speaks either of that which makes clean, or of that which has no blood.
19:94
Then he adds the perfect thing, love.
19:95
他說:「不可停止聚會」;
'Not forsaking,' he says, 'the assembling of ourselves together';
19:96
which some, he says, do, and cut apart the gatherings; this he forbids them.
19:97
'For a brother helped by a brother is like a strong city.'
19:98
'But let us consider one another to provoke unto love.'
19:99
「讓我們彼此相顧」是甚麼意思呢?例如,若有人是有德行的,我們就效法他,注目於他,好去愛並被愛;
What is meant by 'Let us consider one another'? For instance, if anyone is virtuous, let us imitate him, let us look to him, so as to love and to be loved;
19:100
for from love the good works come.
19:101
因為愛使自己更加火熱,一切美善也都從愛而生;
For love makes itself warmer, and from it are born all good things;
19:102
for there is no good thing which does not come through love.
19:103
所以讓我們彼此堅立這愛;
Let us therefore confirm this toward one another;
19:104
'For love is the fulfilling of the law.'
19:105
我們若彼此相愛,就不需要勞苦,也不需要流汗;
We have no need of labors, nor of sweat, if we love one another;
19:106
it is a kind of self-moving road that leads to virtue.
19:107
因為正如在大道上,人若找著了起頭,就被它引導,不需要有人牽著他的手;
For just as on the highway, if one finds the beginning, he is guided by it and needs no one to lead him by the hand;
19:108
so also in the case of love: only lay hold of the beginning, and straightway you are led by the hand by it and are set straight.
19:109
It is kind, it does not reckon the evil.
19:110
If a man considers his own self, how he is disposed toward himself, let him be so disposed toward his neighbor also.
19:111
No one envies himself; he wishes all good things for himself; he prefers himself to all; he desires to do everything for his own sake.
19:112
If, then, we were so disposed toward others as well, all dreadful things would be dissolved: there would be no enmities, there would be no covetousness.
19:113
For who would choose to overreach himself? No one.
19:114
But rather the very opposite.
19:115
Let us therefore hold all things in common, and let us not cease to gather ourselves together.
19:116
And if we do this, remembrance of wrongs would have no place.
19:117
For who would choose to bear a grudge against himself? Who would choose to be angry with himself? Do we not most of all pardon ourselves? If we are so disposed toward our neighbors also, there will never be any remembrance of wrongs.
19:118
And how is it possible, one says, so to love one's neighbor as one loves one's own self? If others had not done this, you would rightly think it impossible.
19:119
But since they did do it, it is plain that it fails to come about among us because of our own slothfulness.
19:120
Moreover, Christ enjoins nothing impossible, seeing that many have even surpassed His commands.
19:121
Who, then, did this? Paul, Peter, the whole choir of the saints.
19:122
But if I should say that they loved their neighbors, I shall say nothing great.
19:123
They loved their enemies as one could not love those of like mind with himself.
19:124
For who among us would choose, for the sake of those of like mind, to depart into hell when he is about to go into the kingdom? No one.
19:125
But Paul chose this for the sake of his enemies, of those who stoned him, of those who scourged him.
19:126
What pardon, then, shall we have, what excuse, if we do not show toward our friends even the smallest part of the love which Paul showed toward his enemies? And the blessed Moses too, before him, was willing for the sake of his enemies, of those who stoned him, to be blotted out of the book of God.
19:127
And David, seeing those who withstood him being slain, says:
19:128
I, the shepherd, have sinned; but these, what have they done? And having taken Saul into his hands, he was unwilling to slay him, but saved him alive, and that when he himself was about to be in peril.
19:129
但這些事若在舊約之下尚且行了,我們這些活在新約之下的人,若連他們的度量都達不到,還有甚麼可原諒的呢?因為我們的義若不勝於法利賽人和文士的義,就不能進天國;
But if these things were done under the Old Covenant, what pardon shall we have who live under the New, and yet do not even attain to the same measure as they? For if, unless our righteousness exceed that of the Pharisees and Scribes, we shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven,
19:130
then when we have even less than they, how shall we enter? Love, He says, your enemies, and you shall be like your Father who is in heaven.
19:131
For you do not benefit him, but yourself.
19:132
How? By doing this you become equal to God.
19:133
If he is loved by you, he has gained nothing great,
19:134
for he was loved by a fellow-servant.
19:135
但你若愛你同作僕人的,就得著了大益處;
But you, if you love your fellow-servant, have gained a great thing.
19:136
Do you see that you do not do a favor to him, but to yourself? For the prize is set not for him, but for you.
19:137
What then, one says, if he be wicked? So much the greater is the reward.
19:138
And you ought even to owe him thanks for his wickedness, though he remain evil while receiving countless benefits.
19:139
For if he were not exceedingly evil, your reward would not have been so exceedingly increased.
19:140
So that the very reason for not loving—the saying that he is wicked—this same is a reason for loving.
19:141
Take away the antagonist, and you take away the occasion for the crowns.
19:142
Do you not see the athletes, how they fill sacks with sand and so exercise themselves? But you have no need to contrive this.
19:143
Life is full of those who exercise you and make you strong.
19:144
Do you not see that the trees too, the more they are buffeted by the winds, so much the more do they become stronger and denser? We also, therefore, if we be long-suffering, shall also be strong.
19:145
因為經上說,恆久忍耐的人大有智慧;
For a man, it says, that is long-suffering is great in understanding;
19:146
but he that is faint-hearted is mightily foolish.
19:147
Do you see how great the praise of the one? Do you see how great the accusation of the other? Mightily foolish, that is, exceedingly.
19:148
Let us not, then, be faint-hearted toward one another.
19:149
因為這並非出於仇恨,乃是出於心胸窄小;
For this does not come from enmity, but from having a small soul;
19:150
因為魂若剛強,就必輕易承擔一切,沒有甚麼能將它淹沒,反倒要領它進入平靜的港灣;
for if the soul be strong, it will bear all things easily, and nothing will be able to sink it, but it will bring it into calm harbors.
19:151
Which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and love toward mankind of our Lord
19:152
Jesus Christ, with whom, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honor to the Father, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
