By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
27:2
他們因著信,過紅海如行乾地;
By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land;
27:3
which the Egyptians attempting to do were swallowed up.
27:4
By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encircled for seven days.
27:5
By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish together with those who were disobedient, when she had received the spies with peace.
27:6
Paul is wont to introduce many things by the way, and he is dense in his thoughts.
27:7
For such is the grace of the Spirit:
27:8
it does not comprise few thoughts in a multitude of words, but implants a great and abundant meaning in the brevity of its utterances.
27:9
Observe, then, how, discoursing concerning faith by way of exhortation, he reminds them of what a type and mystery it is, the truth of which we possess.
27:10
By faith, he says, he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of the blood, lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them.
27:11
But what is the sprinkling of the blood? A lamb was sacrificed in each house, and its blood was smeared upon the doorposts, and this was a barrier against the Egyptian destruction.
27:12
If then the blood of a lamb, in the midst of the Egyptians and amid so great a destruction, preserved the Jews unharmed,
27:13
何況基督的血豈不更要拯救我們,這血不是塗在門框上,乃是塗在我們的魂上;
much more shall the blood of Christ save us, smeared not upon the doorposts, but upon our souls;
27:14
for even now the destroyer goes about in this deep night.
27:15
But let us arm ourselves with that sacrifice.
27:16
他把塗抹稱為灑;
He calls the smearing a sprinkling;
27:17
for out of Egypt God led us, out of the darkness, out of idolatry.
27:18
然而所作的事本是微不足道的,所成就的卻是偉大的;
And yet the thing that was done was nothing, but that which was accomplished was great;
27:19
for that which was done was blood, but that which was accomplished was salvation and a barricade and a hindrance to destruction.
27:20
那使者懼怕那血;
The angel feared the blood;
27:21
他戰慄了,因想到主的死;
he shuddered, considering the death of the Master;
27:22
for this reason he did not touch the doorposts.
27:23
And they smeared it, and having smeared it they took courage.
27:24
But you who have the blood of the very Lamb Himself, do you not take courage? By faith they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land.
27:25
Again he sets a whole people beside a people, that they may not say, 'We cannot become like the saints.'
27:26
他說,他們因著信,過紅海如行乾地;
By faith, he says, they passed through the Red Sea as by dry land;
27:27
which the Egyptians attempting to do were swallowed up.
27:28
Here he also brings them to a remembrance of the sufferings in Egypt.
27:29
怎麼是因著信呢?因為他們指望能穿過那海,為此就禱告;
How by faith? Because they hoped to pass through the sea, and for this reason they prayed;
27:30
or rather, it was Moses who prayed.
27:31
Do you see that everywhere faith transcends human reasonings and weakness and lowliness? Do you see that at the same time they both believed, and yet dreaded the punishment, both in the blood
27:32
of the doors, and in the Red Sea? And this made it manifest that it was water, through those who fell in and were drowned, and that it was no illusion but reality.
27:33
正如在獅子的事上,那些被吞吃的人顯明了事情的真實,在火爐的事上,那些被燒的人也是如此;
And just as in the case of the lions those who were consumed showed the reality of the events, and in the case of the furnace those who were burned;
27:34
so also now you see the very same events working for some unto salvation and glory, but for others unto destruction.
27:35
信就是這樣大的美善;
So great a good is faith;
27:36
for even when we fall into helplessness, then we are delivered, even should we come to death itself, even should our case be despaired of.
27:37
For what else was left? The Egyptians and the sea encircled them unarmed, and either they must be drowned as they fled, or fall into the hands of the Egyptians.
27:38
然而神卻從那絕無可能之處拯救了他們;
But nevertheless from that which was impossible He saved them;
27:39
同樣的水,對這一群鋪展在腳下如同乾地,對那一群卻淹沒他們如同大海;
the same water was spread out beneath the one like earth, but drowned the other like sea;
27:40
there it forgot its nature, but here it even armed itself against them. By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they had been encircled for seven days.
27:41
For surely the sound of trumpets is not able to throw down stones, even if one should trumpet for ten thousand years, but faith can do all things.
27:42
Do you see that everywhere it is changed, not by sequence nor by the law of nature, but that all things come to pass contrary to expectation? So here too all things come to pass contrary to expectation.
27:43
For since again and again he was saying that we must believe in the hopes that are to come, with good reason he set all this discourse in motion, showing that not now only, but from the beginning all the wonders have been achieved and accomplished through this faith.
27:44
By faith Rahab the harlot did not perish together with those who were disobedient, when she had received the spies with peace.
27:45
所以,你們若顯得比一個妓女更沒有信心,那就是可恥的了;
It would therefore be shameful if you should appear even more faithless than a harlot;
27:46
and yet she heard the men when they made their report, and straightway she believed.
27:47
因此,結局也隨之而來;
Consequently the end also followed;
27:48
for when all had perished, she alone was saved.
27:49
She did not say to herself, 'I shall be with many of my own;'
27:50
she did not say, 'Can I be wiser than so many prudent men, who disbelieve—and shall I believe?' Nothing of the sort, which it was likely another would both say and suffer; but she believed the words that were spoken.
27:51
And why do I still speak? For the time would fail me in the recounting.
27:52
他不再一一列出名字,乃是以那妓女作結,並藉著這人物的身分使他們知恥,就不再鋪陳這些史事,免得顯得長篇累牘;
He no longer sets down the names, but having ended with the harlot, and having put them to shame by the quality of the person, he no longer expands the histories, lest he should seem to speak at length;
27:53
然而他也不撇下這些事,乃是極其明智地略略帶過,兼顧兩面—既避免叫人生厭,又不損及那緊密;
yet he does not let them go, but runs over them very prudently, guarding both things—both avoiding satiety, and not marring the density;
27:54
he neither kept altogether silent, nor by speaking wearied them, but does both.
27:55
因為當一個人激烈地爭辯時,他若一味堅持爭辯下去,就會使聽者疲乏,攪擾那已經被說服的人,並落得好虛榮之名;
For when one contends vigorously, if he persists in contending, he wears out the hearer, troubling him who is already persuaded, and gaining a reputation for vainglory;
27:56
for one must adapt oneself to what is profitable.
27:57
And why do I still speak, he says? For the time would fail me in the recounting concerning Gideon, and Barak, and Samson, and Jephthah, and David also, and Samuel, and the prophets.
27:58
Some find fault with Paul because he places Barak and Samson and Jephthah in these ranks.
27:59
What do you say? He who placed the harlot, will he not place these? Do not tell me of the rest of their life, but only whether they did not believe and shine in faith.
27:60
And of the prophets, he says, who through faith subdued kingdoms.
27:61
你看見沒有,他在這裡並不是為他們作一種光輝生活的見證;
Do you see that here he does not bear witness to a splendid life on their part;
27:62
因為這並不是首先所尋求的事;
for this was not the thing chiefly sought;
27:63
but for the present it was an examination of faith.
27:64
For tell me, did they not accomplish everything by faith? How? Through faith, he says, they subdued kingdoms—those with Gideon.
27:65
That is, he here called God's love for mankind 'righteousness.'
27:66
I think he is saying this concerning David.
27:67
And what promises did he obtain? Those of which it was said, that his seed should sit upon his throne.
27:68
They stopped the mouths of lions, they quenched the power of fire, they escaped the edge of the sword.
27:69
See how they were in the very midst of death: Daniel encircled by the lions, the three children abiding in the furnace, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob amid divers trials—and not even so did they despair.
27:70
when it turns out contrary, then we must believe that nothing contrary has happened, but that all things follow in due order.
27:71
Again I think he is speaking concerning the three children.
27:72
Out of weakness they were made strong, they became mighty in war, they turned to flight the armies of aliens.
27:73
Here he hints at the events surrounding the return from Babylon.
27:74
that is, from captivity.
27:75
When the affairs of the Jews had already been given up for lost, when they differed in nothing from the bones of the dead, then their return came to pass.
27:76
For who would have hoped that they should come back from Babylon—and not only come back, but also become strong and turn to flight the armies of aliens? But nothing of the kind, he says, has befallen us.
27:77
But these things are types of things to come.
27:78
Women received their dead by resurrection.
27:79
他在此說的是有關眾申言者的事,就是以利沙和以利亞;
Here he speaks of the events concerning the prophets, Elisha and Elijah;
27:80
for these raised the dead.
27:81
And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
27:82
But we did not obtain resurrection.
27:83
But I am able, he says, to point also to those who were cut off and did not accept deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
27:84
For tell me, why, when it was possible to live, were they unwilling? Was it not because they were looking for a better life? And those who had raised others chose themselves to die, that they might obtain a better resurrection—not such a one as that of the women's children.
27:85
在這裏我覺得他也是暗指約翰和雅各;
Here it seems to me that he is also hinting at John and at James;
27:86
for beheading is called being 'cudgelled to death.'
27:87
It was in their power to behold the sun, it was in their power not to rebuke, and yet they chose to die; and those who had raised others chose themselves to die, that they might obtain a better resurrection.
27:88
And others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment; they were stoned, they were sawn asunder, they were tempted.
27:89
He ends with these, with those most closely akin to their case.
27:90
因為當憂傷是出於同一情境時,這些事最能帶來安慰;
For these things especially bring consolation, when the grief springs from the same circumstance;
27:91
since, even if you speak more vehemently, yet if it is not born of the same circumstance, you have accomplished nothing.
27:92
為此他把講論歸結到這一點上,題到捆鎖、監禁、鞭打、石頭打死,暗指有關司提反和撒迦利亞的事;
For this reason he brought his discourse to a close upon this point, speaking of bonds, imprisonments, scourgings, stonings, hinting at the things concerning Stephen and concerning Zacharias;
27:93
wherefore he added, 'They died by the slaying of the sword.'
27:94
你說甚麼呢?有人脫離刀劍的鋒刃,有人卻被刀殺死?這是甚麼意思?你稱讚哪一樣,你希奇哪一樣——是這樣,還是那樣?他說,是的,這樣、那樣都稱讚;
What do you say? Some escaped the edge of the sword, while others died by the slaying of the sword? What is this? Which do you praise, which do you admire—this, or that? Yea, he says, both this and that;
27:95
this, because it is proper to your own case, and that, because faith prevailed even unto death itself, and is a type of things to come.
27:96
For there are two marvels of faith: that it both accomplishes great things and suffers great things, and that it counts its sufferings as nothing.
27:97
他說,你也不能說他們是些無用、無足輕重的人;
And you cannot say, he says, that they were some worthless creatures and of no account;
27:98
for even if you set the whole world against them, I find them weighing down the scale, and being more precious.
27:99
Therefore also he spoke thus: 'Of whom the world was not worthy.'
27:100
What then were they to receive here below, of whom nothing in the world was worthy? Here he lifts up their mind, teaching them not to be nailed to things present, but to think themselves greater than all things in this present life, if indeed the whole world is not worthy of them.
27:101
What then do you wish to receive here? For it is an insult, if you receive your reward here.
27:102
所以我們不要存屬世的心思,也不要在此世尋求報答,也不要如此靈裏貧窮;
Let us not therefore be worldly-minded, nor seek our recompense here, nor be so poor of soul;
27:103
因為若全世界都不配有他們,你為何還去尋求那一部分呢?這也是合理的;
for if the whole world is not worthy of them, why do you seek after the part? And with good reason;
27:104
他在此所說的「世界」,或是指眾人,或是指受造之物本身;
By 'world' here he means either the multitude, or the creation itself;
27:105
for Scripture is wont to use the word in both senses.
27:106
他說,即使一切受造之物連同眾人都起來,為著自己的分站住,仍不能顯為配得上這些人;
If all creation together with men, he says, should stand for what is its own, it would not yet appear a worthy match for these;
27:107
正如無數重量的糠秕與乾草,也抵不上十顆珍珠的價值;
for just as countless weights of chaff and grass could not be a worthy match for ten pearls;
27:108
因為一個遵行主旨意的人,勝過無數的違法之人;
for better is one man doing the will of the Lord than countless transgressors;
27:109
by 'countless' he does not mean merely the many, but the boundless multitude.
27:110
Consider how great a thing the righteous man is.
27:111
'Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon'—and it came to pass.
27:112
Let then the whole inhabited earth come—nay rather
27:113
讓兩個、三個、四個、十個、二十個世界都來,任憑他們說這話、行這事;
let two, and three, and four, and ten, and twenty inhabited worlds come, and let them speak and do this;
27:114
but the friend of God gave commands to the creatures of the Friend—nay rather, he besought the Friend, and the servants yielded, and he that was below gave orders to the things above.
27:115
You see that these things came to pass for service, fulfilling the appointed course? This is greater than the deeds of Moses.
27:116
何以如此呢?因為向海發命令,與向天上之物發命令,並不相同;
How so? For it is not the same thing to give commands to the sea and to the things in heaven;
27:117
for that too was great, exceedingly great, only it was not equal.
27:118
Hear also whence he became such a man.
27:119
How so? The name of Joshua was a type of Christ.
27:120
For this reason, therefore, since he bore in type such a calling as that of Jesus, the creation reverenced that very appellation.
27:121
那麼怎樣呢?難道再無別人被稱為約書亞麼?然而這人是為此緣故、在預表上如此被稱呼的;
What then? Was no other called Joshua? But this man was so called upon this account, in type;
27:122
因為他原也被稱為何西阿;
for indeed he was also called Hoshea;
27:123
為此他的名字被更改了;
for this reason the name was changed;
27:124
for it was a foretelling and a prophecy.
27:125
這人領百姓進入應許之地,正如耶穌領我們進入諸天;並非律法,正如摩西也未曾領入,反倒留在外面;
This man brought the people into the promise, just as Jesus brought us into heaven; not the law, just as neither did Moses, but he remained outside;
27:126
the law has not power to bring in, but grace has.
27:127
你看這些預表是從古時就預先描繪出來的麼?他向受造之物發命令——不,倒不如說,向那受造之物中為主的部分、向那頭本身發命令,而他自己卻站在下面;
You see the types sketched out beforehand from of old? He gave commands to the creation—nay rather, to the part that is lord of the creation, to the very head, while he himself stood below;
27:128
that, when you see Jesus in the form of a man saying the same things, you may not be troubled nor astonished.
27:129
他自己甚至在摩西還活著的時候,就使仇敵敗逃;
He himself, even while Moses yet lived, put the enemies to flight;
27:130
this man, even while the law yet lived, ordered all things, but not openly.
27:131
But let us see how great is the virtue of the saints.
27:132
If here they work such things, if here they do such things as the angels, what then are they there? How great is the splendour they possess? Perhaps each one of you would have wished to be such a man, as to be able to give orders to the sun and the moon.
27:133
Here what could those say who declare that heaven is a sphere? For why did he not say, 'Let the sun stand still,' but added, 'Let the sun stand still over Gibeon, and the moon over the valley of Aijalon'? That is, 'Let it make the day longer.'
27:134
這事在希西家的日子也曾發生;
This also came to pass in the days of Hezekiah;
27:135
But this was more wonderful than that, namely, that the sun should travel back again by the contrary road, before it had yet completed its course.
27:136
Yet we shall obtain things greater than these, if we are but willing.
27:137
For what did Christ promise us? Not to make the sun stand still, nor the moon, nor to make the sun go backward; but what? 「I and the Father,」 He says, 「will come to him, and make Our abode with him.」
27:138
What need have I of sun and moon and these wonders, when the very Master of all things comes down to dwell and is established within me?
27:139
For what need have I of any of these things? He Himself shall be to me for sun and moon and for light.
27:140
For tell me: if, on entering a king's palace, you had the choice, would you rather be able to rearrange some of the fixtures there, or to win the king's friendship so completely as to persuade him to come down to you? Is not the latter far greater than the former? And what of it? Is it not a marvel if a man commands the very things that Christ also commands? But Christ, one says, has no need of the Father, but acts with His own authority.
27:141
那麼,你先承認並說:祂不需要父,乃是憑自己的權柄行事;
Then first confess and say that He needs not the Father, but acts with His own authority;
27:142
and then I will ask you again, or rather I will teach you concerning the prayer which He offered, that it was a matter of condescension and dispensation (for surely Christ was not inferior to Joshua the son of Nun), and that He could teach us even without prayer.
27:143
因為正如你聽見一位教師結結巴巴地拼讀字母時,你並不說他無知;當他問「某某字母在哪裏」時,你知道他發問並非因為無知,乃是要引導那受教的學生;
For just as, when you hear a teacher stammering and spelling out the letters, you do not say that he is ignorant; and when he asks, 「Where is such-and-such a letter?」 you know that he asks not out of ignorance, but because he wishes to lead on the learner;
27:144
so also Christ, though needing not prayer, offered prayer, wishing to lead you on, that you might continually give heed to prayer, that you might do it without ceasing, soberly, and with much watchfulness.
27:145
我所說的儆醒,不單指夜間起來,也指白晝在禱告中保持清醒;
By watching I do not mean only rising by night, but also being sober by day in one's prayers;
27:146
for such a one is truly called wakeful.
27:147
Since it is possible even while praying by night to be asleep, and while not praying by day to be watchful, whenever the soul is stretched out toward God, whenever it considers with whom it converses, to whom its word is directed, whenever it takes to heart that angels stand by with
27:148
trembling and fear, while he himself approaches yawning and scratching himself.
27:149
Prayer is a great weapon, if it be made with a fitting mind.
27:150
And that you may learn its strength, consider it from this:
27:151
Persistent supplication prevailed over shamelessness and injustice and cruelty and recklessness.
27:152
「Hear,」 He says, 「what the unjust judge saith.」
27:153
它又勝過了怠惰;
And again it prevailed over sloth;
27:154
友情所未能成就的,恆切的懇求卻成就了;
and what friendship did not accomplish, this persistent supplication accomplished.
27:155
「And though he will not give to him because he is his friend,」 He says, 「yet because of his importunity he will rise and give him as much as he needeth.」
27:156
And persistent perseverance made her who was unworthy to be worthy.
27:157
「It is not meet,」 He says, 「to take the children's bread, and to cast it to the little dogs.」
27:158
「For even the little dogs eat of the crumbs from their masters' table.」
27:159
所以,我們要留意禱告;
Let us then give heed to prayer;
27:160
it is a great weapon, if it be made with earnestness, if without vainglory, if with a sincere soul.
27:161
This routed enemies, this benefited a whole nation that was unworthy.
27:162
「I have heard,」 He says, 「their groaning, and am come down to deliver them.」
27:163
這禱告是救人的良藥,是攔阻罪的,是治療過犯的醫院;
This is a saving medicine, and a restrainer of sins, and a healing-place for transgressions;
27:164
in this the widow who was left alone also persevered.
27:165
If then we pray with humility, smiting our breast like the publican, if we utter the very words which he uttered, if we say, 「God be merciful to me a sinner,」 we shall obtain all things.
27:166
For even if we are not publicans, yet we have other sins not less than his.
27:167
你不要對我說,你只是在某件小事上有了過失;
For do not tell me that you have failed in some small matter;
27:168
for the thing has the same nature.
27:169
For just as he is alike called a murderer who has slain a child and he who has slain a man,
27:170
so also is he a covetous man, both he who is covetous in great things and he who is covetous in small.
27:171
懷怨記恨也不是小罪,乃是大罪;
And the bearing of grudges too is no small, but even a great sin;
27:172
for 「the ways of those who bear grudges lead unto death,」 He says.
27:173
「Whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of hell-fire;」
27:174
and he who calls his brother a fool and senseless, and all such things.
27:175
我們又不配地領受那可畏的奧祕,並且嫉妒、辱罵;
And we partake of the awful Mysteries unworthily, and we envy and revile;
27:176
and some of us have often even been drunken.
27:177
這些事中的每一件,即便單獨一件,也足以把人趕出國度之外;
And each one of these things, even by itself alone, is enough to cast one out of the Kingdom;
27:178
but when they are all gathered together, what defense shall we have? We have need, beloved, of much repentance, of much prayer, of much endurance, of much perseverance, that we may be able to attain the good things which have been promised us.
27:179
「God be merciful to me a sinner;」
27:180
或者說,我們不但要口裏這樣說,心裏也要這樣想;
or rather let us not merely say it, but let us also be so minded;
27:181
and if any other accuse us, let us not be angry.
27:182
那稅吏聽見「我不像這個稅吏」這話,並沒有動怒,反倒扎了心;
That publican heard the words, 「I am not as this publican,」 and was not provoked, but was pricked to the heart;
27:183
he received the victory, and laid aside the reproach.
27:184
The one spoke of the wound, the other sought the medicine.
27:185
「God be merciful to me a sinner;」
27:186
moreover, even if another say it, let us not be indignant.
27:187
But if we ourselves say ten thousand evil things of ourselves, yet are vexed when we hear them from others, this is no longer humility nor confession, but display and vainglory.
27:188
有人說:「稱自己為罪人是炫耀嗎?」是的;
「Is it display,」 one says, 「to call oneself a sinner?」 Yes;
27:189
因為我們藉此博得謙卑的美名,受人稱讚、受人誇獎;
for we receive a reputation for humility, we are admired, we are praised;
27:190
but if we say the contrary of ourselves, we are despised.
27:191
So that this too we do for the sake of glory.
27:192
But what is humility? It is to bear it when another reproaches us, to acknowledge one's sin, to endure evil-speaking.
27:193
And yet not even this would be humility, but rather good sense.
27:194
但如今我們稱自己為罪人、不配的、有千萬樣的惡;
But now we call ourselves sinners, unworthy, ten thousand such things;
27:195
yet if any other bring against us but one of these, we are exasperated, we grow savage.
27:196
你看見這不是認罪,也不是通情達理麼?你自己說你是這樣的人;
Do you see that it is not confession, nor good sense? You said you were such a one;
27:197
那麼,當你從別人口中也聽見這話、並受責備時,就不要惱恨;
be not indignant then at hearing it from others also, and at being reproved;
27:198
當別人責備你時,你的罪就這樣得以減輕;
thus are your sins made lighter, when others reproach you;
27:199
for upon themselves they lay a burden, but you they lead on to true wisdom.
27:200
Hear what the blessed David says, when Shimei was cursing him:
27:201
「The Lord hath bidden him, that He may look upon my affliction;」
27:202
「and the Lord will requite me good
27:203
in return for his cursing on this day.」
27:204
But you, though you speak of yourself and of an excess of evils, if you do not hear from others the praises that belong to the great and righteous, grow savage.
27:205
Do you see that you are trifling in matters that admit of no trifling? For we even fend off praises out of a desire for further praise, that we may again obtain greater commendations, that we may be admired the more.
27:206
如此,我們不接受頌揚,其實正是為了要使那頌揚增多;
So that, in not accepting the praises, we do this in order that we may increase them;
27:207
and all things come to pass for our own glory, not for truth.
27:208
For this reason all things are empty, all things are perplexity.
27:209
所以我勸勉你們,至少從如今起,要遠離眾惡之母,就是虛榮,並要照著神所看為美善的而活;
Wherefore I exhort you, now at least to stand aloof from the mother of evils, from vainglory, and to live according to what seems good to God;
27:210
so that we may also attain unto the good things to come, in Christ Jesus our Lord.
