Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself made purification of our sins.
2:2
在凡事上都需要一顆敬虔的心,但尤其是當我們論到神、或聽到關於神的事的時候;
Everywhere a reverent mind is needful, but most of all when we say or hear anything concerning God;
2:3
因為舌頭說不出,耳朵也聽不見任何配得上神的話;
for neither can the tongue speak, nor the ear hear, anything worthy of God;
2:4
And why do I speak of tongue and ear? For not even the mind, which far surpasses these, will be able to grasp anything with exactness, whenever we desire to utter anything concerning God.
2:5
因為神所賜的平安既超越人一切的悟性,那為愛祂之人所預備的,也是人心未曾想到的;
For if the peace of God surpasses all understanding, and the things prepared for those who love Him have not entered into the heart of man;
2:6
how much more does the God of peace Himself, the Creator of all things, transcend our reasoning by a great measure.
2:7
所以我們應當以信心與敬虔領受一切;
We ought therefore to receive all things with faith and reverence;
2:8
當言語軟弱無力、不能確切表明所要說的事時,那時就更要榮耀神,因為我們有這樣的一位神,是超越我們的心思與言語的;
and when speech grows weak, and cannot set forth the things spoken with exactness, then most of all to glorify God, that we have such a God, who transcends both our understanding and our speech;
2:9
因為我們所思想到關於神的許多事,是我們無法用言語表達的;
for many of the things we conceive concerning God we are unable to express;
2:10
or, many things indeed we express, but we have not strength to conceive.
2:11
As, for example, I mean this: that God is everywhere we know, but how, this we no longer conceive.
2:12
That there is a certain incorporeal power, the cause of all good things, we know; but how it is, we know not.
2:13
Behold, we express it, and we do not conceive it.
2:14
我說祂無所不在,我卻不明白這事;
I said that He is everywhere, but I do not comprehend it;
2:15
我說祂是無始的,我卻不明白這事;
I said that He is without beginning, but I do not comprehend it;
2:16
I said that He begat out of Himself, and again I know not how I am to conceive it.
2:17
所以,確有一些事,是連說也說不出來的;
There are, then, certain things which it is not even possible to express;
2:18
as, for example, I mean this: the understanding conceives it, but cannot utter it.
2:19
And that you may know that even Paul is weak, and does not set forth his examples with exactness, and that you may shudder and seek nothing further, listen:
2:20
for having said 'Son,' and having set Him forth as Creator, what does he add? 'Who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person.'
2:21
But this we must take with reverence, and cut away whatever is unfitting.
2:22
'The brightness of His glory,' he says.
2:23
But observe with what intent he takes it up, and so do you also receive it:
2:24
就是說:祂是出於祂的,是無受損害地出於祂的,是祂並未因此減少或虧損地出於祂的;
namely, that it is from Him, that it is without any suffering, that it is without His being diminished or lessened;
2:25
since there are some who take up certain unfitting notions from the illustration.
2:26
For the radiance, they say, has no substance of its own, but has its being in another.
2:27
Do not, then, take it thus, O man, nor fall sick with the sickness of Marcellus and Photinus.
2:28
因為他就近醫治你,免得你陷入那種觀念,也不容你被拖入那毀滅性的病症裡;
For close at hand he heals you, so that you may not fall into that notion, nor does he permit you to be carried down into that ruinous disease;
2:29
for what does he say? 'And the express image of His person.'
2:30
showing by this addition that, just as the Father subsists as a distinct person and needs nothing else for His subsistence,
2:31
For here, showing the unvarying likeness, he says this, both referring you to the peculiar impress of the prototype, and teaching that He subsists in His own person, in Himself.
2:32
And having said above that God made all things through Him, here he ascribes to Him the sovereign authority.
2:33
For what does he add? 'And upholding all things by the word of His power;'
2:34
so that from this we may apprehend not only the express image of His person, but also His governing all things with sovereign authority.
2:35
See, then, how that which is proper to the Father, this he attaches to the Son.
2:36
For on this account he did not say simply,
2:37
'upholding all things,' nor did he say,
2:38
'by His power,' but, 'by the word of His power.'
2:39
For just as a little while ago he was ascending and descending with us by little and little,
2:40
now, as if by certain steps, he ascends to a height, then again descends, and says:
2:41
'through whom also He made the ages.'
2:42
See how here also he cuts two ways.
2:43
For wishing to lead us away from the innovation of Sabellius and Arius—the one doing away with the distinctness of the person, the other cutting the one nature into inequality—he abundantly overthrows them both.
2:44
Πῶς .
How, then, does he do this? Up and down he turns the same things and utters them, so that He may not be thought without beginning, nor alien to God.
2:45
親愛的,你不要因這話而感到希奇;
And be not startled at the saying, beloved;
2:46
因為就是在如此有力的證明之後,仍有些人說祂是與神無關的,給祂另立一位父,並說祂與這一位相爭;
for if even after so great a demonstration there are some who have said that He is alien, and have given Him another father, and say that He wars against this one;
2:47
他若不說這些話,他們豈不要說出更多的話來麼?所以,當他被迫要施行醫治時,他也就被迫說出那些卑微的話來;
if he had not said these things, what would they not have uttered? When, therefore, he is compelled to heal, then he is also compelled to utter lowly things;
2:48
as, for instance, that 'He appointed Him,' he says, 'heir of all things,' and that 'through Him He made the ages.'
2:49
Then, that he may not do harm in another way, from the words of lowliness he leads Him back again to sovereign authority, and shows Him to be of equal honor with the Father, and so equal in honor that many have supposed that He Himself is the Father.
2:50
你且看他極大的明智;
And behold his great sagacity;
2:51
他先立定那一點,並確切無誤地把它穩固起來;
he first lays down that point, and secures it with exactness;
2:52
and when this has been shown—that He is Son of God, and that He is not alien to Him—then thenceforth with confidence he utters all the exalted things he wishes.
2:53
因為既然論到祂說些偉大的話,曾引許多人進入那種觀念,所以他先立定那些卑微的話,然後便穩妥地升到他所願的那麼高;
For since to say something great concerning Him led many to that notion, having first laid down the lowly things, then with security he ascends to as great a height as he wishes;
2:54
'whom He appointed heir of all things, and that through Him He made the ages,'—then he adds:
2:55
'and upholding all things by the word of His power.'
2:56
For He who governs all things by a word alone would need nothing in order to bring all things into being.
2:57
And that this is so, see how again, as he proceeds, he ascribes to Him the sovereign authority, taking away even the 'through whom.'
2:58
For since He wrought through Him what He willed, thereupon, standing apart from Him, what does he say? 'You, Lord, in the beginning laid the foundation of the earth, and the heavens are the works of Your hands.'
2:59
Nowhere the 'through whom,' nor that He made the ages through Him.
2:60
那麼怎麼樣呢?難道萬物不是藉著祂造的麼?是的;
What then? Were they not made by Him? Yes;
2:61
but not as you say, nor as you suppose, as through an instrument, nor as though He would not have made them unless the Father had reached out a hand to Him.
2:62
因為正如那一位不審判甚麼人,卻說是藉著子施行審判,因為祂生了子作審判者;
For just as He judges no one, and yet is said to judge through the Son, because He begat Him to be judge;
2:63
So too He creates through Him, because He begot Him as a Creator.
2:64
For if the Father is the cause of Him, much more is He the cause of the things that have come into being through Him.
2:65
所以,每當祂要表明子是出於自己時,就必然說出那些卑微的話語;
Whenever, therefore, He wishes to show that the Son is from Himself, He necessarily utters lowly things;
2:66
but whenever He wishes to speak lofty things, Marcellus and Sabellius seize hold of the occasion.
2:67
Yet the Church, fleeing the excess of both, has trodden the middle way.
2:68
因為她既不停留在卑微之中,免得撒摩撒他的保羅得著地步,也不永遠停留在高深之處;
For neither does she abide in lowliness, lest Paul of Samosata find room, nor does she remain forever among lofty things;
2:69
and again she shows His great nearness to the Father, lest Sabellius spring upon it.
2:70
He said 'Son,' and immediately Paul of Samosata stands forth, saying that He is a Son as are the many.
2:71
But He dealt him a mortal blow by saying 'Heir.'
2:72
然而他仍與亞流一同厚顏強辯;
Yet still he acts shamelessly along with Arius;
2:73
因為「祂立子為後嗣」這句話,兩人都據為己有;
for the phrase 'He appointed Him heir' both of them lay hold of;
2:74
the one saying that it is a mark of weakness, the other that it is a matter of assigning, undertaking also what follows.
2:75
And when Paul had said, 'Through whom also He made the ages,' he laid the shameless Samosatene flat on his back, while Arius still seems to be strong.
2:76
But behold how he casts down this one too, again saying:
2:77
'Who being the radiance of His glory,'
2:78
But lo, again Sabellius, and Marcellus, and Photinus spring upon it.
2:79
Yet to all these also he gives a single blow, saying:
2:80
'And the express image of His person, upholding all things by the word of His power.'
2:81
Here again he smites Marcion also—not, indeed, very forcefully, yet he smites him.
2:82
For throughout the whole Epistle he contends against them.
2:83
但正如我所說的,他稱子為「榮耀所發的光輝」;
But, as I said, he called the Son 'the radiance of the glory';
2:84
and that this was rightly said, hear Christ speaking concerning Himself: 'I am the light of the world.'
2:85
他親自說「光輝」,為要表明在那裡也是照樣說的;
He Himself said 'radiance,' that he might show that there too it is spoken thus;
2:86
and it is plain, as light of light.
2:87
And not this only is shown, but also that He has enlightened our souls.
2:88
And by 'radiance' he signified the equality of the essence, and His nearness to the Father.
2:89
你要思想所說之話的精微;
Consider the exactness of what is said;
2:90
他取用一個本質、一個位格,來呈明兩個位格的存在;
he took one essence and one hypostasis for the presentation of two hypostases;
2:91
which he does also in the matter of the knowledge of the Spirit.
2:92
因為正如他說,父的知識與聖靈的知識乃是一,是真正的一,絲毫不與自己分裂;
For just as he says that the knowledge of the Father and of the Spirit is one, as being truly one and in no way divided against itself,
2:93
so here too he laid hold of some single expression for the manifestation of the two hypostases.
2:94
Then he added, 'And the express image.'
2:95
因為真像乃是有別於原型的另一者;
For the express image is something other than the prototype;
2:96
然而並非全然相異,乃是僅就其在自己位格中存在而言;
yet not altogether other, but only in respect of subsisting in its own hypostasis;
2:97
since here too the express image denotes the unvarying likeness of that of which it is the image, being like in all respects.
2:98
When, therefore, He calls Him both 'form' and 'express image,' what will they say? 'But man too,' one says, 'is called the image of an image.'
2:99
What then? In the same way as the Son? 'No,' he says, 'but because "image" does not indicate the likeness.'
2:100
And yet, in the sense in which man is called an image, it does indicate the likeness, as in a man.
2:101
因為神在天上是怎樣,人在地上也是怎樣——我是就治理權而言的;
For what God is in heaven, that man is upon the earth—I speak with respect to dominion;
2:102
and just as man rules over all things upon earth, so also God rules over all things in heaven and upon the earth.
2:103
但從另一面說:人並不被稱為「真像」,不被稱為「光輝」,不被稱為「形像」;
But otherwise: man is not called 'express image,' is not called 'radiance,' is not called 'form';
2:104
each of which sets forth the essence, or a likeness according to essence.
2:105
As, therefore, the form of a servant sets forth nothing else than a man in all respects the same,
2:106
so also the form of God sets forth nothing else than God.
2:107
'Who being the radiance,' he says, 'of the glory.'
2:108
'Who being the radiance of His glory,' he added again:
2:109
「就坐在至大者的右邊」;
'He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty';
2:110
such are the names he employs, nowhere finding a name of the essence itself.
2:111
For neither 'Majesty' nor 'glory' presents the name he wishes to speak—rather, it has no name to be found.
2:112
這正是我從起初所說的:我們常常思想到某事物,卻無法用言語述說出來;
For this is what I was saying from the beginning, that often we conceive of something and cannot express it;
2:113
since not even 'God' is a name of the essence, nor is it at all possible to find a name of that essence.
2:114
既然連天使的本質也尋不著一個能表明其本質的名,那麼在神的事上又何足為奇呢?或許連魂也是如此;
And what wonder is it in the case of God, when not even in the case of an angel could one find a name indicative of the essence? And perhaps not even in the case of the soul;
2:115
for this name does not seem to me to be indicative of the essence itself, but of its 'cooling.'
2:116
For one may see the same thing called 'soul,' and 'heart,' and 'mind.'
2:117
'Create in me a clean heart, O God,' it says.
2:118
And not only these, but in many places one may see it called 'spirit' as well.
2:119
'Upholding all things by the word of His power.'
2:120
How then, tell me, heretic, do you say—because it is said in the Scripture:
2:121
'God said, Let there be light,' that the Father commanded and the Son obeyed? But behold, here too He Himself makes by a word:
2:122
他說:「祂托住萬有」;
'For upholding,' he says, 'all things';
2:123
that is, governing, holding together the things that are falling apart.
2:124
For to hold the world together is no less than to have made it, but—if one may say something wonderful—it is even greater.
2:125
因為一件是從無有之中生出某物;
For the one is to bring something forth out of things that are not;
2:126
but the other—to hold together things that have come into being and are about to depart into non-being, and to bind together things that are at variance with one another—this is the great and wonderful thing, and the proof of much power.
2:127
Then, showing also the ease of it, he said:
2:128
'Governing,' by a metaphor drawn from those who move something simply with a finger and make it revolve.
2:129
Here he showed both that the mass of the creation is great, and that its greatness is as nothing to Him.
2:130
Then again he shows the effortlessness, saying:
2:131
「用祂大能的話語」;
'By the word of His power';
2:132
for since among us a word seems to be a bare thing, he shows that in the case of God it is not bare.
2:133
But that He upholds all things by His word he did say; yet how He upholds them by His word he did not further add.
2:134
Then he went on to speak concerning His majesty.
2:135
因為約翰也是這樣行的;
For John also did the very same;
2:136
for having said that He is God, he went on to speak of the fashioning of creation.
2:137
For what that one intimated when he said,
2:138
'In the beginning was the Word,' and, 'All things were made by Him,' this one too showed by 'the word' and
2:139
並藉著說「也曾藉著祂創造諸世界」,將這事顯明出來;
by saying, 'By whom also He made the worlds,' he made manifest;
2:140
for indeed he shows Him to be both Creator, and existing before all the ages.
2:141
What then, when the Prophet says concerning the Father, 'From everlasting to everlasting Thou art';
2:142
and concerning the Son, that He is before all the ages and the Creator of all things—what would they say? Rather, that which was said concerning the Father,
2:143
'He that existeth before the ages,' one may see this also said concerning the Son. And just as that one says,
2:144
「生命在祂裡頭」,藉此宣告那托持受造之物者,說祂自己就是萬有的生命;
'Life was in Him,' declaring what sustains creation, that He Himself is the life of all things;
2:145
「並用祂權能的命令托住萬有」;
'And upholding all things by the word of His power';
2:146
not as the Greeks do, who, so far as it lies in them, deprive Him even of the very work of creation and of His providence, shutting up His power as far as the moon.
2:147
'For by Himself,' he says, 'having made purification of our sins.'
2:148
Having spoken concerning those wonderful and great things, the highest of all, he now speaks also concerning His care for men.
2:149
誠然「並托住萬有」這句話也是極其普遍的;
For that too was in the highest degree universal, the saying, 'And upholding all things';
2:150
yet this is far greater.
2:151
因為就祂而言,祂拯救了眾人;
For His part indeed saved all men;
2:152
since John also, having said,
2:153
'Life was in Him,' and having declared His providence, again says that 'He is also Light,' showing this very same thing.
2:154
'By Himself,' he says, 'having made purification of our sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high.'
2:155
Here he sets down two very great proofs of His care:
2:156
both the purifying us from our sins, and the doing of this by Himself.
2:157
你在許多地方都看見他以此為榮,不僅以與神和好為榮,也以這事乃是藉著子成就的為榮;
And in many places you see him glorying in this, not only in the reconciliation to God, but also in that this was accomplished through the Son;
2:158
for thus the great gift became yet greater, in that it was through the Son.
2:159
'He sat down at the right hand,' and, 'Having by Himself made purification of our sins,' and having reminded us of the cross, he quickly introduced the discourse concerning the resurrection and the ascension.
2:160
你且看他那難以言喻的智慧;
And behold his unspeakable wisdom;
2:161
then again, lest you should think that He is standing, he adds,
2:162
'For to which of the angels said He at any time, Sit thou on My right hand?' 'He sat down,' he says, 'at the right hand of the Majesty on high.'
2:163
What is the meaning of 'on high'? Does he shut up God within a place? Away with the thought!
2:164
他這樣說,並不是要我們作這樣的臆想;
It is not that we should suspect this, that he has spoken thus;
2:165
「在右邊」——他並不是藉此給祂加上某種形態姿勢,乃是顯明祂與父同等的尊榮;
'At the right hand'—he did not thereby assign Him a bodily posture, but showed His equality of honour with the Father;
2:166
「在高天」——他並不是把祂封鎖在那裡,乃是顯明祂已超越了萬有;
'on high'—he did not shut Him up there, but showed that He has transcended all things;
2:167
as though he said, He has attained to the very throne of the Father.
2:168
所以父怎樣「在高天」,祂也照樣如此;
As therefore the Father is 'on high,' so also is He;
2:169
for the sitting together shows nothing else than equality of honour.
2:170
But if they say that He said—
2:171
What then? Did He say it to one standing? Nay, they could not show it.
2:172
再者,他並沒有說神吩咐或命令,乃是說神「說:你坐」;
And besides, he did not say that He commanded or gave order, but that He 'said, Sit thou';
2:173
and this for no other reason, but that you should not think Him without beginning and without cause.
2:174
他為此緣故如此說,這由那坐的位置就顯明了;
For that He has spoken thus for this reason is plain from the place of the sitting;
2:175
for if He had wished to declare inferiority, He would not have said,
2:176
'On the right hand,' but, 'On the left.'
2:177
'Being made,' he says, 'so much better than the angels, as He hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.'
2:178
The word 'Being made' is here used instead of 'having been declared,' as one might say.
2:179
Do you see that he knows the name 'Son' to declare genuineness of nature? And indeed, if it were not genuine, he would not have said this.
2:180
How so? Because for no other reason is He genuine, but that He is from Him.
2:181
From this, then, he draws his argument.
2:182
但祂若是靠恩典作子,那祂就不但不更尊貴,反倒比天使低微了;
But if He is a Son by grace, He is not only not more excellent, but is even inferior to the angels;
2:183
how so? Because righteous men also were called sons, and the name 'son,' unless it be genuine, avails not to show the difference.
2:184
And to make plain that there is a certain difference between creatures and the Creator, hear what he says:
2:185
「所有的天使,神從來對哪一個說過『你是我的兒子,我今日生你』?又說『我要作祂的父,祂要作我的子』呢?」這些話也是就著肉身說的;
'For to which of the angels said He at any time, Thou art My Son, this day have I begotten Thee? And again, I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son?' These things were said also with reference to the flesh;
2:186
for the saying, 'I will be to Him a Father, and He shall be to Me a Son,' belongs to the incarnation.
2:187
But the saying, 'Thou art My Son,' declares nothing else than that He is from Him.
2:188
And as 'He that is' is spoken from the present time,
2:189
for this most of all befits Him,
2:190
so also the word 'This day' seems to me here to be spoken with reference to the flesh.
2:191
For when He has taken hold of it, thenceforth He utters all things without fear.
2:192
For indeed the flesh partakes of the exalted things, just as the Godhead also partakes of the lowly.
2:193
For God, who did not disdain to become man, and did not decline the deed, how would He have declined the words? [4]
2:194
Knowing these things, therefore, let us be ashamed of nothing, nor be high-minded.
2:195
For if He Himself, being God and Master and Son of God, did not decline to take the form of a servant,
2:196
much more ought we to do all things, even if they be lowly.
2:197
For whence, tell me, O man, art thou high-minded? From the things of this life? But these run past before they appear.
2:198
But from spiritual things? Nay, this very thing is a spiritual achievement—not to be high-minded.
2:199
Why then art thou high-minded? Because thou doest well?
2:200
Hear Christ saying:
2:201
「你們做完了一切所吩咐的,只當說:我們是無用的僕人;
'When ye shall have done all things, say that We are unprofitable servants;
2:202
for what we were bound to do, we have done.'
2:203
But are you proud because of your wealth? Why, tell me? Have you not heard that naked we entered into life, and naked shall we depart? Or rather, do you not see those who went before you departing desolate and naked? Who, that possesses what belongs to another, is proud of it? For those who wish to use these things merely for their own enjoyment are stripped of them even against their will—often before death, and at death most certainly of all.
2:204
'But,' he says, 'we, while we live, use them as we wish.'
2:205
In the first place, one would scarcely see anyone readily using his possessions as he wishes.
2:206
縱使有人真能照自己所願來使用它們,這也算不得什麼大事;
And if someone does use them as he wishes, not even this is any great thing;
2:207
for the present season is brief in comparison with the ages that have no end.
2:208
You are proud, O man, because you are rich? On what ground? For this belongs also to robbers and thieves and murderers and the effeminate and fornicators and to all the wicked.
2:209
那麼你為何自高呢?因為若你已照當有的方式使用了它,你就沒有理由自高,免得你破壞了那誡命;
Why, then, are you proud? For if you have used it as you ought, you have no reason to be proud, lest you spoil the commandment;
2:210
but if you have not used it as you ought, then most of all you should be humbled, because you have become a slave of your riches and possessions, and are ruled by them.
2:211
For tell me, if a man in a fever should drink much water, which for a little while quenches his thirst but afterward kindles the flame the more, ought he to be proud? And what if a man busies himself needlessly about more things—should he on that account be proud? Why, tell me? Because you have many masters? Because you have countless anxieties? Because many flatter you? But this is to be a slave.
2:212
And that you may learn that you are their slave, listen plainly:
2:213
我們裡面其餘的情慾,有時候是有用的,例如怒氣在許多場合是有用的;
the other passions within us are in some cases useful—for instance, anger is in many cases useful;
2:214
for it is said, 'Unjust wrath shall not be held guiltless';
2:215
so that it is possible even to be angry justly.
2:216
And again, 'He who is angry with his brother without cause shall be liable to hell-fire.'
2:217
Again, zeal is good, and desire also—desire, when it is directed toward the begetting of children; and zeal, when it has imitation of what is good.
2:218
在美善之事上時常被人效法羨慕,乃是好的;
And it is good to be an object of emulation in what is good, always;
2:219
and again, 'Earnestly desire the better gifts.'
2:220
Pride, however, is nowhere good, but everywhere useless and harmful.
2:221
Yet if one must be proud, one ought to be proud over poverty, not over wealth.
2:222
Why? Because the man who can live on little is far greater and better than the one who cannot.
2:223
告訴我,若有些人被召到王城去,其中有些人既不需要牲口,也不需要僕人、遮陽的傘、住宿的地方、鞋子或行李,只要有餅、能從泉源取水就夠了;
For tell me, if certain men were summoned to a royal city, and some of them needed neither beasts of burden, nor servants, nor parasols, nor lodgings, nor sandals, nor baggage, but it sufficed them merely to have bread and to take water from the springs;
2:224
而另有些人卻說:「除非你們給我們車輛和柔軟的床鋪,我們不能前去;除非我們有許多隨從;除非我們能不斷歇息,我們不能;除非我們騎乘牲口,一天只走一小段路程;
while others should say, 'Unless you give us carriages and a soft bed, we cannot come; unless we have many attendants; unless we can constantly rest, we cannot; unless we use beasts of burden, and travel only a small part of the day;
2:225
此外我們還需要許多別的東西」;
and we have need of many other things besides';
2:226
which should we admire—those, or these? Clearly these, who need nothing.
2:227
So too here: some, for the journey of this life, have need of many things, while others have need of none.
2:228
So that those in poverty rather ought to be proud.
2:229
'But the poor man is despicable,' he says.
2:230
Not he, but those who despise him.
2:231
因為我為何不藐視那些不曉得羨慕當羨慕之事的人呢?若有人是個畫家,他必譏笑一切嘲弄他的人,只要他們是無知的,他既不理會他們所說的,反倒以自己的見證為滿足;
For why should I not despise those who do not know how to admire the things they ought? Now if a man is a painter, he will laugh at all who mock him, so long as they are ignorant, and he pays no heed to what they say, but is content with the testimony of his own judgment;
2:232
yet shall we make ourselves dependent on the opinion of the many?
2:233
And how are these things worthy of any pardon? For this reason we are worthy to be despised—when we do not despise those who despise us on account of our poverty, nor count them wretched.
2:234
我且不提有多少罪是從財富而生的,又有多少美善之事是從貧窮而來的;
And I pass over how many sins are begotten of wealth, and how many good things come from poverty;
2:235
or rather, neither wealth nor poverty is good in itself, but each becomes so according to those who use it.
2:236
The Christian is shown to be approved rather in poverty than in wealth.
2:237
怎麼說呢?因為在貧窮中,他必較少驕矜,更加自守、更加莊重、更加溫良、更加明智;
How? For being in poverty he will be less puffed up, more temperate, more grave, more reasonable, more prudent;
2:238
but abiding in wealth, he has many hindrances to these things.
2:239
Let us then see what are the things the rich man does—or rather, he who uses his wealth badly.
2:240
That one plunders, is grasping, uses violence.
2:241
還有呢?你豈不發現那反常的情慾、非法的媾合、行邪術、下毒害命,並其他一切可怕的事,都是從財富而生的嗎?你看見了嗎,在貧窮中比在財富中追求德行更容易、更少勞苦嗎?你不要因富人在今生不受刑罰,就以為他們連罪也沒有犯;
And what more? Will you not find that unnatural lusts, unlawful unions, sorceries, poisonings, and all the other dreadful things are begotten of wealth? Do you see that it is easier to pursue virtue in poverty than in wealth, and with less toil? For do not, because the rich do not pay the penalty here, suppose that they do not even sin;
2:242
因為若叫富人受刑罰是容易的,你必發現監牢滿是他們這等人;
for if it were easy for the rich to pay the penalty, you would find the prisons filled from among them;
2:243
but along with its other evils, wealth has this too: that he who possesses it, offending in wickedness without punishment, will never cease from doing this, but will receive wounds without remedies, and no one will put a bridle upon him.
2:244
And if one wishes, he will find that poverty even affords us more occasions for pleasure.
2:245
How? Because it is freed from cares, from hatred, from strife, from contention, from rivalry, from ten thousand dreadful things.
2:246
所以我們不要追求財富,也不要總是羨慕那些擁有許多之人;
Let us therefore not pursue riches, nor forever envy those who have gained much;
2:247
但我們中間那有財富的人,倒要將財富用在當用之處;
but let those of us who have, use our wealth for what is needful;
2:248
and let those who have not, not be grieved on this account, but give thanks to God for all things, because with little toil He prepares for us, if we will, to receive the same reward as the rich—or even a greater—and out of little we shall gain much.
2:249
Since he too who brought the two talents was admired and honored equally with him who brought the five.
2:250
Why so? Because, although he was entrusted with two talents, yet he fulfilled all that was in his power, and brought in double what had been entrusted to him.
2:251
Why then do we hasten to be entrusted with much, when it is possible through little to reap the same fruit, or even more? When the toil is less, but the reward far greater? For a poor man will more easily part with what is his than a rich man who possesses much and great things.
2:252
Or do you not know that the more a man wraps himself in, the more he craves? That we may not suffer this, then, let us not seek wealth, nor be impatient toward poverty, nor hasten to be rich; but let even those of us who have use it in such a way as Paul commanded:
2:253
'Those who have,' he says, 'as though they had not, and those who use this world, as not using it to the full;'
2:254
好叫我們得著所應許的美善之事;
that we may attain the good things that have been promised;
2:255
which may it be granted to us all to attain, by the grace and lovingkindness [of our Lord Jesus Christ].
