And it came to pass in the fourteenth year of Hezekiah's reign that Sennacherim king of the Assyrians came up against the fortified cities of Judea and took them.
And the king of the Assyrians sent Rapsakes from Lachis to Jerusalem to king Hezekiah with a great force; and he stood at the aqueduct of the upper pool, on the road of the fuller's field.
Behold, you are trusting in this crushed reed staff, in Egypt; whoever leans upon it, it will go into his hand. Such is Pharao king of Egypt, and all who trust in him.
And Eliakim and Somnas and Ioach said to him, "Speak to your servants in Syrian, for we understand it; and do not speak to us in Judean. And why do you speak in the ears of the men who are on the wall?"
And Rapsakes said to them, "Has my lord sent me to speak these words to your lord or to you? Was it not to the men sitting on the wall, that they may eat dung and drink urine together with you?"
Do not listen to Hezekiah. Thus says the king of the Assyrians: "If you wish to be blessed, come out to me, and each of you shall eat of his own vine and his fig trees, and you shall drink the water of your own cistern,
Do not let Hezekiah deceive you, saying, "Your God will deliver you." Have the gods of the nations each delivered his own country out of the hand of the king of the Assyrians?
And Eliakim the son of Chelkias the steward, and Somnas the scribe of the army, and Ioach the son of Asaph the recorder came in to Hezekiah with their tunics torn, and reported to him the words of Rapsakes.
