Interea cum ad bellum Sarmaticum Valentinianus de Galliae partibus venisset Illyricum, ibi vixdum coepto bello, aegritudine subita oppressus diem obiit, relictis haeredibus in Imperio filiis, Gratiano Augusto, Valentinianoque admodum parvulo, et nondum regiis insignibus initiato.
