Sane quoniam moris erat in Aegypto, ut mensura ascendentis Nili fluminis ad templum Serapis deferretur, velut ad incrementi aquarum et inundationis auctorem, subverso ejus simulachro, ignique consumto, omnes simul negabant, Serapin injuriae memorem, aquas ultra ac affluentia solita largiturum. Sed ut ostenderet Deus non Serapin, qui multo erat Nilo posterior, sed se esse, qui aquas fluminis temporibus suis juberet excrescere, tanta ex eo et deinceps fuit inundatio, quantam fuisse prius aetas nulla meminerat. Et ideo ulna ipsa, id est, aquae mensura, quam πήχυν vocant, ad aquarum Dominum in Ecclesiam coepta deferri.
誠然，因在埃及向有習俗，要把尼羅河上漲的水位量度送到塞拉皮斯的廟，當作獻給那「水量增長與氾濫之主」的；及至他的像被推倒、被火燒盡，眾人都一致斷言，塞拉皮斯必記恨這侮辱，不再賜下河水與素常的豐盈。但神為要顯明那叫河水按時節漲溢的，並非塞拉皮斯（他遠晚於尼羅河），乃是祂自己，便從那時起降下了空前的大水，是任何世代都不記得從前有過的。因此那「肘量」——即他們稱為「πήχυς」的水量量度——便開始送到水的主那裡，送進教會。
Indeed, since it was the custom in Egypt that the measure of the rising of the river Nile should be carried to the temple of Serapis, as to the author of the increase of the waters and of the inundation, when his image had been overthrown and consumed by fire, all alike denied that Serapis, mindful of the injury, would any longer grant the waters and the customary abundance. But that God might show that it was not Serapis—who was much later than the Nile—but Himself who bade the waters of the river increase in their seasons, from that time onward there was so great an inundation as no age remembered to have been before. And therefore the very cubit-measure, that is, the measure of the water which they call πήχυς, began to be carried to the Lord of the waters, into the Church.
70:2
Sed ubi haec gesta religioso Principi nuntiata sunt, extentis ad caelum palmis, cum ingenti fertur exultatione dixisse: Gratias tibi, Christe, quod absque urbis illius magnae pernicie tam vetustus error extinctus est.
及至這些事被報告給那虔誠的皇帝時，據說他向天舉手，懷著極大的歡躍說：「基督啊，感謝禰，因為這麼古老的謬誤竟得撲滅，而那大城卻未遭毀滅。」
But when these things were announced to the religious emperor, with hands stretched out to heaven he is reported to have said with great exultation: 'Thanks be to thee, O Christ, that without the destruction of that great city so ancient an error has been extinguished.'
