55:1
At Valentinianus in Italia degens, fratris nece, atque hostis metu perterritus, simulatione oblatam pacem a Maximo, simulans ipse quoque libenter amplectitur. Cum interim Justina mater ejusdem, Arianae haereseos alumna, impietatis suae venena, quae, vivente viro, suppresserat, filio facile decepto fidenter aperuit. Igitur apud Mediolanum posita, conturbare Ecclesiarum statum, comminari sacerdotibus depulsiones, exilia, nisi Ariminensis concilii decreta, quibus fides patrum temerata fuerat, revocarent. Quo bello Ecclesiae murum et turrim validissimam pulsabat Ambrosium. Eumque minis, terroribus , atque omni oppugnationis genere fatigans, primum sibi aditum debellandae rimabatur Ecclesiae.
But Valentinian, dwelling in Italy, terrified by his brother's death and by fear of the enemy, himself also gladly embraced the peace offered—in pretense—by Maximus, pretending likewise. Meanwhile Justina, his mother, a nursling of the Arian heresy, confidently disclosed to her easily deceived son the poisons of her impiety, which she had suppressed while her husband lived. Therefore, established at Milan, she set about to disturb the state of the Churches and to threaten the priests with expulsions and exiles, unless they should restore the decrees of the Council of Rimini, by which the faith of the fathers had been violated. In this war she battered Ambrose, the wall and strongest tower of the Church; and wearying him with threats, terrors, and every kind of assault, she sought to probe a first approach for storming the Church.
55:2
But although that Jezebel fought armed with her spirit, Ambrose nevertheless resisted, filled with the virtue and grace of Elijah. She herself, however, would prattle, clamor, incite, and inflame the peoples to discord in the churches; but because the matter turned out less according to her wish, she counted it an injury, and over this complained to her son. Hence the young man, kindled over the slight of an insult which his mother had falsely fabricated, sent a band of armed men to the Church: he ordered at once that the doors be broken open, the holy things assaulted, the Bishop dragged out and driven into exile. But so great was the perseverance of the faithful peoples, that they would rather lose their lives than their Bishop.
