That Origen, whom he calls 'the Centaur,' said that the universe is coeternal with the only wise and self-sufficient God. For he asserted: 'Since there is no craftsman without things crafted, nor maker without things made, nor almighty without things ruled (for the craftsman must be so called on account of the things crafted, the maker on account of the things made, and the almighty on account of the things ruled), it is necessary that these have been brought into being by God from the beginning, and that there was no time when these did not exist. For if there was a time when the things made did not exist, then, since with the things made not existing there is no maker either, observe what an impious consequence follows.'
But it will also follow that the unturning and unchangeable God is altered and changes. For if He made the universe later, it is plain that He changed from not making to making. But this is absurd, along with the things said before. Therefore it is not possible to say that the universe is not without beginning and coeternal with God.
