Ἡμέτερον μὲν ὄντως ἐστὶ κακὸν ἡ πρὸς τὸν θεὸν ἀνομοιότης τε καὶ ἄγνοια· ἀγαθὸν δὲ ἔμπαλιν πηλίκον ἡ πρὸς αὐτὸν ἐξομοίωσις; φαίνεται γοῦν οἰκεῖον μὲν ἀληθῶς ἀγαθὸν ἡ περὶ τὸ ἄφθαρτόν τε καὶ θεῖον ἐπιστροφὴ καὶ πίστις, κακὸν δὲ ἡ περὶ αὐτὸ ἄγνοια καὶ ῥᾳθυμία, εἴ γε τὰ ἐν ἡμῖν καὶ ἐξ ἡμῶν φυόμενα, ταῦτα ἡμέτερα τυγχάνουσι, κακοποιητικὰ ὄντα πονηρίας
我們自己的惡，實在就是與神的不相似並對祂的無知；但反過來，那與祂相似的善，是何等之大呢！至少看來，我們自己真正的善，乃是歸向並信入那不朽壞、神聖的；而我們的惡，則是對祂的無知與懈怠——只要那些在我們裏面、又從我們而生的，這些確是我們自己的，能生出邪惡而導致為惡。
Truly our own evil is unlikeness to God and ignorance of Him; but how great, on the contrary, is the good which is likeness to Him! It appears, at any rate, that our own true good is the turning toward and faith in that which is incorruptible and divine, while our evil is ignorance and heedlessness concerning Him—if indeed the things in us and growing out of us, these turn out to be our own, being productive of wickedness for evil.
