Οὐκ εἶπεν ἢ φόβος αὐτοῦ, ἀλλ ἢ φόβος παρ' αὐτοῦ. ὁ οὐν αὐτοῦ φόβος ἔργον ἡμέτερον ἐκ τοῦ ἐφ ἡμῖν ἐρχόμενος· ὁ δὲ παρ' αὐτοῦ χάρις καὶ δωρεά ἐστιν αὐτοῦ τὸ λεῖπον ἡμῖν ἀναπληροῦσα. ὁμοίως ἔχει καὶ τό Πρόσθες ἡμῖν πίστιν. λείπει γὰρ ἡμῖν φησίν, τὸ ἀπὸ τῆς σῆς δωρεᾶς, ἀλλ οὐ τὸ ἐφ ἡμῖν
他沒有說「或是對祂的敬畏」，乃是說「或是那從祂而來的敬畏」。那麼，對祂的敬畏乃是我們自己的工作，是從那在我們權能之內的而來；但那從祂而來的，乃是祂的恩典與恩賜，補足我們所缺乏的。照樣，那「求主加增我們的信心」一語也是如此。因為他說，我們所缺乏的，乃是那出於祢恩賜的，而不是那在我們權能之內的。
He did not say 'or the fear of Him,' but 'or the fear that is from Him.' The fear of Him, then, is our own work, coming from that which lies within our power; but that which is from Him is His grace and gift, supplying what is wanting to us. Likewise stands also the saying, 'Increase faith unto us.' For there is wanting to us, he says, that which is from Thy gift, but not that which lies within our power.
