創世記 第 44 章

And Joseph commanded the one who was over his house, saying, Fill the men's bags with food, as much as they can carry, and put each man's silver at the mouth of his bag.

And put my silver cup into the bag of the youngest, along with the price of his grain. And it was done according to the word of Joseph, just as he had said.

The morning dawned, and the men were sent away, they and their donkeys.

And when they had gone out of the city and had not gone far, Joseph said to the one over his house, Rise up, pursue after the men, and you will overtake them, and you shall say to them, Why have you repaid evil for good?

Why did you steal my silver cup? Is this not the one from which my lord drinks? And he himself divines by divination with it. You have done an evil thing in what you have done.

And when he found them, he spoke to them according to these words.

And they said to him, Why does my lord speak such words as these? Far be it from your servants to do such a thing.

If the silver which we found in our bags we brought back to you from the land of Canaan, how then should we steal silver or gold from the house of your lord?

With whichever of your servants the cup is found, let him die; and we also will be slaves to our lord.

And he said, Now then, let it be as you say: the man with whom the cup is found shall be my slave, but you shall be clear.

And they hurried and each took down his bag to the ground, and each opened his bag.

And he searched, beginning from the eldest until he came to the youngest, and he found the cup in Benjamin's bag.

And they tore their garments, and each loaded his bag onto his donkey, and they returned to the city.

And Judas and his brothers came in to Joseph while he was still there, and they fell before him on the ground.

And Joseph said to them, What is this deed you have done? Do you not know that a man such as I surely divines by divination?

And Judas said, What shall we say in reply to my lord, or what shall we speak, or how shall we be justified? God has found out the injustice of your servants. Behold, we are household slaves to my lord, both we and he with whom the cup was found.

And Joseph said, Far be it from me to do this thing. The man with whom the cup was found shall be my slave; but as for you, go up in safety to your father.

And Judas came near to him and said, I beg you, lord, let your servant speak a word before you, and do not be angry with your servant, for you are next after Pharaoh.

My lord, you asked your servants, saying, Do you have a father or a brother?

And we said to my lord, We have an aged father, and a child of his old age, younger than he; and that child's brother is dead, and he alone was left to his mother, and the father loved him.

And you said to your servants, Bring him down to me, and I will take care of him.

And we said to my lord, The child will not be able to leave the father; and if he leaves the father, he will die.

But you said to your servants, Unless your youngest brother comes down with you, you shall not see my face again.

And it came to pass, when we went up to your servant, our father, that we reported to him the words of my lord.

And our father said to us, Go again, buy us a little food.

But we said, We cannot go down; but if our younger brother goes down with us, we will go down; for we cannot see the man's face unless our younger brother is with us.

And your servant, our father, said to us, You know that my wife bore me two sons.

And one went out from me, and you said that he had been devoured by wild beasts, and I have not seen him since, even until now.

If therefore you take this one also from my presence, and sickness befalls him on the way, then you will bring down my old age with sorrow to Hades.

Now therefore, if I go in to your servant, our father, and the boy is not with us, since his life hangs upon this boy's life,

it shall come to pass that when he sees the boy is not with us, he will die; and your servants will bring down the old age of your servant, our father, with pain to Hades.

For your servant took the child in charge from the father, saying, If I do not bring him to you and set him before you, I shall be guilty before my father all my days.

Now therefore I will remain with you as a servant in the child's place, a household slave of my lord; but let the child go up with his brothers.

For how shall I go up to the father if the child is not with us, lest I see the evils that will find my father?
