民數記 第 11 章

And the people were murmuring evil things before the Lord; and the Lord heard, and he was angered in wrath, and a fire from the Lord was kindled among them, and it devoured a certain part of the camp.

And the people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to the Lord, and the fire abated.

And the name of that place was called Burning, because a fire from the Lord was kindled among them.

And the mixed multitude that was among them craved a craving; and sitting down, the sons of Israel also wept and said: Who will feed us meat?

We remember the fish which we used to eat in Egypt for nothing, and the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic.

But now our soul is utterly dried up; there is nothing at all, except that our eyes are upon the manna.

And the manna is like coriander seed, and its appearance is the appearance of crystal.

And the people would go about and gather it, and grind it in the mill, and pound it in the mortar, and boil it in the pot, and make it into cakes; and its delight was like the taste of a honey-cake made with oil.

And whenever the dew came down upon the camp by night, the manna would come down upon it.

And Moses heard them weeping by their families, each one at his own door; and the Lord was exceedingly angered in wrath, and before Moses it was an evil thing.

And Moses said to the Lord: Why have you afflicted your attendant? And why have I not found favour before you, that you should lay the onrush of this people upon me?

Did I conceive all this people in the womb? Or did I bear them, that you say to me: Take him into your bosom, as a nurse would carry the suckling child, into the land which you swore to their fathers?

Whence am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep upon me, saying: Give us meat that we may eat.

I shall not be able by myself alone to bear this people, for this matter is too heavy for me.

But if you do thus to me, kill me outright, if I have found mercy with you, that I may not see my own affliction.

And the Lord said to Moses: Gather me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom you yourself know to be elders of the people and their scribes; and you shall bring them to the tent of testimony, and they shall stand there with you.

And I will come down and speak there with you, and I will take of the spirit that is upon you and put it upon them, and they shall bear with you the onrush of the people, and you shall not bear them alone.

And to the people you shall say: Purify yourselves for tomorrow, and you shall eat meat; for you wept before the Lord, saying: Who will feed us meat? For it is well with us in Egypt. And the Lord will give you meat to eat, and you shall eat meat.

You shall eat not one day, nor two, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days,

but a month of days you shall eat, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes cholera to you; because you disobeyed the Lord who is among you, and wept before him, saying: Why was it for us to come out of Egypt?

And Moses said: Six hundred thousand footmen are the people among whom I am; and you have said: I will give them meat to eat, and they shall eat a month of days.

Shall sheep and oxen be slaughtered for them, and will it suffice them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered for them, and will it suffice them?

And the Lord said to Moses: Shall the hand of the Lord not be sufficient? Now you shall know whether my word shall overtake you or not.

And Moses went out and spoke to the people the words of the Lord, and he gathered seventy men from the elders of the people, and set them round about the tent.

And the Lord came down in a cloud and spoke to him, and took of the spirit that was upon him and put it upon the seventy men, the elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, and they did not continue any more.

But two men remained in the camp; the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the second Modad; and the spirit rested upon them. And these were among those enrolled, but they had not come to the tent, and they prophesied in the camp.

And a young man ran and reported to Moses, and said: Eldad and Modad are prophesying in the camp.

And Joshua son of Naue, who stood by Moses, the chosen one, answered and said: My lord Moses, stop them.

And Moses said to him: Are you jealous for my sake? And would that all the Lord's people were prophets, whenever the Lord gives his spirit upon them!

And Moses went away into the camp, he and the elders of Israel.

And a wind went out from the Lord, and it brought quails over from the sea, and cast them upon the camp, a day's journey on this side and a day's journey on that side, round about the camp, about two cubits from the ground.

And the people rose up all that day and all the night and all the next day, and they gathered the quails; he that gathered least gathered ten kors; and they spread them out to dry for themselves round about the camp.

The meat was still in their teeth, before it was consumed, and the Lord was angered at the people, and the Lord struck the people with an exceedingly great plague.

And the name of that place was called Graves of Craving, because there they buried the people that craved.

From the Graves of Craving the people set out for Haseroth, and the people were at Haseroth.
