民數記 第 13 章

And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

Send men for yourself, and let them spy out the land of the Chananites, which I am giving to the sons of Israel for a possession; one man for each tribe, according to the families of their fathers you shall send them, every one of them a leader.

And Moses sent them out from the wilderness of Pharan by the voice of the Lord; all these men were leaders of the sons of Israel.

And these are their names: of the tribe of Rouben, Salamiel son of Zakchour;

of the tribe of Symeon, Saphat son of Souri;

of the tribe of Iouda, Chaleb son of Iephonne;

of the tribe of Issachar, Igaal son of Ioseph;

of the tribe of Ephraim, Ause son of Naue;

of the tribe of Beniamin, Phalti son of Raphou;

of the tribe of Zaboulon, Goudiel son of Soudi;

of the tribe of Ioseph, of the sons of Manasse, Gaddi son of Sousi;

of the tribe of Dan, Amiel son of Gamali;

of the tribe of Aser, Sathour son of Michael;

of the tribe of Nephthali, Nabi son of Iabi;

of the tribe of Gad, Goudiel son of Makchi.

These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses named Ause son of Naue Joshua.

And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Chanaan, and said to them: Go up by this wilderness, and you shall go up to the mountain,

and you shall see the land, what it is, and the people dwelling upon it, whether it is strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

and what the land is into which they have settled, whether it is good or bad; and what the cities are in which they dwell, whether in walled ones or in unwalled ones;

and what the land is, whether rich or exhausted, whether there are trees in it or not. And persevering, you shall take of the fruits of the land. And the days were the days of spring, the forerunners of the grape.

And they went up and spied out the land from the wilderness of Sin as far as Rhaab, as one enters Ephaath.

And they went up by the wilderness and came as far as Chebron; and there were Achiman and Sessi and Thelamin, the generations of Enach. And Chebron was built seven years before Tanis of Egypt.

And they came as far as the Ravine of the Cluster, and they spied it out, and they cut down from there a branch with one cluster of grapes upon it, and they bore it on poles; also some of the pomegranates and of the figs.

That place they named Ravine of the Cluster, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down from there.

And they returned from there, having spied out the land, after forty days.

And going they came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel, into the wilderness of Pharan, Kades; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation, and they showed the fruit of the land.

And they recounted to him and said: We came into the land into which you sent us, a land flowing with milk and honey, and this is its fruit.

But the nation dwelling upon it is bold, and the cities are fortified, walled, and exceedingly great; and we saw the generation of Enach there.

And Amalek dwells in the land toward the south; and the Chettite and the Euite and the Iebousite and the Amorrite dwell in the hill country; and the Chananite dwells by the sea and by the river Jordan.

And Chaleb silenced the people before Moses, and said to him: Not so, but going up we will go up and take possession of it, for we shall surely be able to prevail against them.

But the men who had gone up with him said: We are not going up, for we shall not be able to go up against the nation, for it is much stronger than we.

And they brought forth to the sons of Israel a terrifying report of the land which they had spied out, saying: The land which we passed through to spy it out is a land that devours its inhabitants; and all the people whom we saw in it are men of exceeding height.

And there we saw the giants; and we were before them as locusts; yes, and so we were before them.
