86:1
Christus in corpore nostro manens, quod omnes non suscitavitmortuos,omnesnon sanavit ægrotos, credamus hoc non potestati defuisse, sed tempori. Tunc orbem totum toto virtutis suae fulgore radiasset, et sustulisset tempus tidei,etnihil secundiadventus sui reservasset ad gloriam. Nec vero sic virtutum suarum tempera vit insignia, ut et divinitatis suæ manifestaret indicium, etcredendi documentum plenissimum largiretur, et excusetionem callidæ infidelitatis auferret, sicut hodie centurio cujus evangelista Lucas meminit,fide sua providentiaque monstravit Centurionis, ait, cujusdam servus male habens moriebatur, qui illi pretiosus erat. Centurio hicRomanus erat;
基督在我們的身體內存留期間,並未使一切死人復活,也未醫治一切病人,我們當相信這並非出於能力的缺乏,而是出於時機。因為那時祂本可以用祂德能全部的光輝照亮整個世界,並取消信德的時期,且不為祂第二次來臨的榮耀留下任何餘地。祂之所以如此節制祂德能的標記,實是為了既顯明祂天主性的憑據,又賜予最完備的信仰證據,並除去狡猾不信的藉口——正如今日福音史家路加所提到的那位百夫長,以其信德與遠見所顯示的。他說:「有一位百夫長的僕人患病垂危,這僕人是他所器重的。」這百夫長是羅馬人;
That Christ, while remaining in our body, did not raise all the dead, did not heal all the sick, let us believe was owing not to a lack of power, but to the time. For then he would have irradiated the whole world with the whole splendour of his power, and would have taken away the time of faith, and would have reserved nothing to the glory of his second coming. Nor indeed did he so temper the marks of his powers, that he might both manifest a token of his divinity, and bestow a most complete proof for believing, and take away the excuse of crafty unbelief — as today the centurion of whom the evangelist Luke makes mention showed by his faith and foresight. 'A certain centurion's servant,' he says, 'being sick, was ready to die, who was dear to him.' This centurion was a Roman;
86:2
sed plus erat hic ipse fructu e centesimo Chritianus. Et Deo magis militabat iste quam saeculo; et in humano bello fortis, fortior in divino, pacis custodia permanebat. Cujus servus male habens moriebatur, qui illi pretiosus erat. f Servus erat,qui pretio taxabatur. Quaeramus ergo quis est iste servus qui illi erat g pretiosus.Si dominatur anima, corpus servit; et homini nil corpore pretiosius. Hic servus centurionis istius pretiosus infirmatur ad mortem; ergo centurio rogabat ut Christus solus mortali corpori largiendo vitam perpetem subveniret.Cum audisset, inquit, de Jesu, misit ad eum h seniores Judæorum. Gentilis Judaeosad Christum mittit;
但他自己以百倍的果實而更是一個基督徒。這人事奉天主勝過事奉世界;他在人間的爭戰中剛強,在神聖的爭戰中更剛強,持守於和平的守護中。他的僕人患病垂危,這僕人是他所器重的。這僕人是以價值來衡量的。所以讓我們探究,這位他所器重的僕人是誰。若靈魂作主,身體便服事;而對人來說,沒有什麼比身體更寶貴。那百夫長這位寶貴的僕人病至垂死;因此百夫長懇求唯獨基督藉賜予永久的生命來救助這必死的身體。他說:「他聽說了耶穌,就打發猶太人的長老到祂那裡去。」一個外邦人差遣猶太人去見基督;
but he himself was more a Christian, by a hundredfold fruit. And this man served God more than the world; and strong in human warfare, stronger in the divine, he remained in the guardianship of peace. Whose servant, being sick, was ready to die, who was dear to him. He was a servant who was valued at a price. Let us therefore inquire who is this servant that was dear to him. If the soul rules, the body serves; and to a man nothing is more precious than the body. This servant of that centurion, a precious one, sickens unto death; therefore the centurion begged that Christ alone might succour the mortal body by granting it perpetual life. 'When he had heard,' he says, 'of Jesus, he sent to him the elders of the Jews.' A Gentile sends the Jews to Christ;
86:3
and to those placed under the law, he who was without the law points out the author of the law. Let no one therefore wonder if a Gentile — that is, a Christian — either calls, or leads, or brings others to Christ. 'He sent to him the elders of the Jews, beseeching him that he would come and save his servant.' And when they had come to Jesus, they besought him earnestly, saying: 'He is worthy that thou shouldst do this for him, for he loveth our nation, and he himself hath built us a synagogue.' The Jews beg for a Gentile, who do not beg for themselves; and they do enough for the salvation of another's servant, who do nothing for the salvation of their own sons. They say: 'He is worthy that thou shouldst do this for him.' If he is worthy who hears, believes, sends to Christ:
86:4
ad Christum qui venit, videt, et non credit, quam probatur indignus ? Diligit enim gentem nostram. Ille diligit gentem vestram,quam sic Christo supplicem facit; sed vos odistis eam, quam sic Christo redditiscontumacem.Autquomodo Christianus non diligit gentem vestram, quidum Christum fatetur ex geate vestra, quidquid gentis vestræ est cœlestem tollit et extollit ad gloriam ? Diligit enim gentem nostram et b synagogam ipse ædificavit nobis. Audistis quia semper diruta est synagoga, etjacet jugiter in cæmentis, nec cœlestem surgit in fabricam, nisi eam in Ecclesiæ culmen Christianus fabricator instruxerit. Jesus, inquit, ibat cumillis. Sed illi nonibant cum Jesu,cum quo mente non ibant;
至於那來到基督面前、看見了卻仍不信的人,怎能不被證為不配呢?「因為他愛我們的民族。」那使我們的民族如此在基督前懇求的人,才是愛你們民族的;而你們卻恨惡它,使它如此頑抗基督。不然,基督徒怎會不愛你們的民族呢?他既承認基督出自你們的民族,便將凡屬你們民族的一切都提起、高舉至榮耀。「因為他愛我們的民族,且親自為我們建了一座會堂。」你們曾聽見:會堂總是被拆毀,長久躺臥在瓦礫之中,永不能起而成為屬天的建築,除非有基督徒的建造者將它扶起,登上教會的巔峰。經上說:「耶穌與他們同行。」但他們並未與耶穌同行,因為他們的心思並未與他同往;
As for the one who comes to Christ, sees, and yet does not believe—how is he not proved unworthy? 'For he loves our nation.' He loves your nation who thus makes it a suppliant before Christ; but you hate it, whom you thus render defiant against Christ. Or how does a Christian not love your nation, when in acknowledging Christ from your nation he takes up whatever belongs to your nation and exalts it to glory? 'For he loves our nation, and he himself has built us a synagogue.' You have heard that the synagogue is always cast down and lies forever in its rubble, and never rises into a heavenly edifice, unless a Christian builder has raised it up into the summit of the Church. 'Jesus,' it says, 'was going with them.' But they were not going with Jesus, since in mind they were not going with him;
86:5
neccum illo erant, qui sejuncti corda. corpore videbantur adjuncti. Et cum jam non longe esset. A quo ? A gentiii. Quantam Judæi se sejungebant aChristo,Christus tamen gentibusj ungebatur.
nor were they with him, for those who were severed in heart only seemed joined to him in body. 'And when he was now not far off.' From whom? From the Gentiles. As greatly as the Jews were severing themselves from Christ, so Christ was being joined to the Gentiles. 'And when he was now not far off, the centurion sent friends to him.' He who before had sent Jews now sends friends, so that by so speaking he marks the Jews as enemies—as the Apostle confirms when he says, 'Enemies for your sake' (Rom. 11). While the Jews begrudge that the Gentiles have believed, they have lost whatever there was both of the Law and of grace. 'He sent friends to him.' Hear the Lord saying to the apostles: 'I will no longer call you servants, but friends' (John 15).
86:6
Just as faith advances servants into friends, so treachery reduces sons into penal servitude. 'He sent friends to him, saying: Lord, do not trouble yourself.' Why? 'For I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof.' You see that Christ was rather leading the Jews than being led by the Jews, so that they might hear that in this centurion there was reverence for the Godhead, in this Gentile a cultivation of the Law, in this soldier the wages of grace, in this Roman the teaching of faith—in a pagan chill a Christian warmth, in an earthly breast a heavenly secret, and the whole knowledge of the supreme dominion amid the entire servitude of the world. 'Lord, do not trouble yourself.' This is to say: God, why do you trouble yourself in a human body? Why do you cast yourself into earthly toil? And why do you weary yourself with the length of the way?
86:7
Why do you journey from place to place, you who are wholly everywhere, and who hold and possess the whole creation within yourself? 'Lord, do not trouble yourself; I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof.' Brethren, what is the roof that makes a man either worthy or renders him unworthy, whereby he either invites or repels the divine approach? Brethren, this roof is the body which covers the soul, which conceals the perception of the spirit, which veils the dwelling-place of the heart, which shuts off the freedom of the mind from the heavenly vision. Under this roof, then, the centurion judges it unworthy for Christ to enter—that is, for the divine Majesty to descend into a human body.
86:8
'I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof.' But God, who—when he wills—makes what is human to be divine, and, when he deigns, transforms what belongs to our flesh into his own spirit, neither disdains to dwell in flesh nor to enter the roof of our body. 'Wherefore,' he says, 'I did not think myself worthy to come to you.' In both respects he is devout, since he both judges it unworthy for God to come to him, and knows that he himself is not worthy to draw near to him. Who enters before a judge unsummoned? Who goes in to a king unbidden? How much more does no one come to God unless he is called. 'Whom he called,' it says, 'those he also justified' (Rom. 8).
86:9
所以百夫長並不躲避主的來臨,也不拒絕基督的同在,只是行事使之成為謙讓者的恩德,而非冒昧者的莽撞。他藉人間的例子暗示並教導神所能行的,說:「因為我也是在權下的人,有兵在我以下;我對這個說,去,他就去;對那個說,來,他就來;對我的僕人說,做這事,他就去做。」這就是說:我這在權下的人,僅憑一言的命令便使屬下順從我;何況你這不受任何人管轄、萬有都在你權下的主,豈不能以你命令的話語醫治、賜下健康、頒佈大能嗎?你既能以言語造成,豈不能以言語驅除嗎?經上說:「他一發命,便都造成」;
The centurion, therefore, does not shun the Lord's coming, nor refuse Christ's presence, but he acts so that it may be the grace of one who leaves room, not the rashness of one who presumes. For he suggests and instructs by a human example what God is able to do, saying: 'For I too am a man set under authority, having soldiers under me; and I say to this one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it.' This is to say: if I, who am set under authority, by the sole command of my word make my subjects obey me, how can you, who are subject to none and to whose power all things are subject, not by your commanding word heal, send health, ordain mighty deeds? Or can you not cast off by a word what you made by a word? 'He spoke,' it says, 'and they were made;'
86:10
mundavit, et creata sunt (Psal.CXLVIII). Aut aliquid ex aliquo reparare non sufficis,cuncta ex nihilo qui parasti ? Dic ergo verbo, et sonabitur puer meus. Implevit illud quod propheta de Deo cecinit: Misit verbum suum,et sanavit eos; et eripuiteosdecorruptelaeorum (Psal.CIV). Fratres, centurio iste, dicendo: Non snm dignus ut intres sub tectum neum,Christiani populi gerit figuram, qui Christi præsentiam corporalem se j udicat non mereri, sed solo verbo, nuntio, auditu fidei tantum, totas Domini audit, credit, respicit in sua sanitate virtitutes. Nam quod dicit: Dtco huic, Vade,et vadit; et alii, Veni,et venit; et servo meo, E'ac hoc,et facit;
'he commanded, and they were created' (Ps. 148). Or are you not able to restore something out of something, you who framed all things out of nothing? 'Say, then, the word, and my boy shall be healed.' He fulfilled what the prophet sang of God: 'He sent his word, and healed them; and he rescued them from their corruption' (Ps. 106). Brethren, this centurion, in saying, 'I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof,' bears the figure of the Christian people, who judge themselves not to merit Christ's bodily presence, but by the word alone, by the message, by the mere hearing of faith, hear, believe, and behold all the Lord's mighty works in their own healing. For when he says, 'I say to this one, Go, and he goes; and to another, Come, and he comes; and to my servant, Do this, and he does it,'
86:11
Judæorum repulsam, vocationem gentium, a Christiani populi obedientiam sic demonstrat.Dico huic, hoc est, Judæo, qui non credidit, Vade, et vadit; et alii, hoc est, Gentili, quia credidit, Venit et venit; et servo meo, hoc est, Christiano, Fac hoc,et facit. Oremus, fratres, ut mereamur Christiani non nomine tantum esse, sed fide; et ut quæ jubentur, non audiamus tantum,sed faciamus audita.Quia sicut devoti servi est fecisse jussa, ista jussa contumacis est non fecisse. Die ego verbo,et sanabitur puer meus. Quo audito, inquit, Jesus miratus est. Creator mirabilium b miratur; aurium conditor, quasi qui non audita nesciat, sic stupet audita;
他這樣顯明了猶太人被棄絕、外邦人蒙召、以及基督徒百姓的順從。「我對這個說」——就是對那不信的猶太人——「去,他就去」;「對那個」——就是對那已經相信的外邦人——「來,他就來」;「對我的僕人」——就是對基督徒——「做這事,他就去做」。弟兄們,讓我們祈求,願我們配得不僅在名義上、更在信德上作基督徒;並願我們對所吩咐的,不僅是聽見,更要在聽見之後去行。因為正如虔敬的僕人是把所吩咐的行了,頑抗的人卻是把這些命令置之不行。「你只要說一句話,我的僮僕就必痊癒。」經上說:耶穌聽見這話,就希奇。奇事的創造主竟希奇;造耳朵的主,彷彿不知自己未曾聽過的事,竟如同對所聽見的感到驚訝;
he thus demonstrates the rejection of the Jews, the calling of the Gentiles, and the obedience of the Christian people. 'I say to this one'—that is, to the Jew who did not believe—'Go, and he goes'; 'and to another'—that is, to the Gentile, because he believed—'Come, and he comes'; 'and to my servant'—that is, to the Christian—'Do this, and he does it.' Let us pray, brethren, that we may deserve to be Christians not in name only, but in faith; and that what is commanded we may not merely hear, but do once heard. For as it belongs to a devout servant to have done what is bidden, so it belongs to the defiant not to have done these commands. 'Say the word, and my boy shall be healed.' When he heard this, it says, Jesus marveled. The Creator of marvels marvels; the Maker of ears, as though he knew not what he had not heard, is astonished as at something heard;
86:12
seddum gentilem sic credidisse miratur, incredulitatem corripit Judæorum. Denique, Sequentibus se turbis dicit, in morte manentes arguens sicJudeeos: Amen dico vobis, nec in Israel tantam fidem inveni. Verum est. fratres: fides sola vivit, el vivet in gentibus; signa et virtutes lassant, et nihil proiiciunt in Judæis.
but while he marvels that a Gentile has thus believed, he reproves the unbelief of the Jews. Finally, to the crowds following him he says, rebuking the Jews who remain in death: 'Amen, I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such faith.' It is true, brethren: faith alone lives, and shall live among the Gentiles; signs and mighty works grow weary and profit nothing among the Jews.
