95:1
Beatus Apostolus quando nota interrogat,quando manifesta perquirit, eos videlicet objurgat et increpat qui eloquia divina sua interpretatione corrumpunt: et inde concipiunt suffragia criminum, unde assumere debuerant documentavirtutum. Sic enim hodie coepit: Quid ergo dicemus? Permanebimus in peccato, at gratia abundet (Rom. vi) ?
The blessed Apostle, when he asks about things known, when he inquires into things manifest, plainly rebukes and chides those who corrupt the divine words by their own interpretation, and thence conceive supports for crimes from that whence they ought to have drawn lessons of virtues. For thus he began today: 'What then shall we say? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound?' (Rom. 6). Above he had said, brethren: 'Where sin abounded, grace did more abound'; and therefore he began thus, and, in place of that divine and singular teaching authority, he shares himself with the unlearned as though by way of question, so that he may answer with full erudition the things that belong to heavenly prudence. For if, where sin abounded, grace did more abound — what then shall we say?
95:2
Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? If mercy is inclined toward the offenders, if grace is plentiful for sinners, if divine bounty is a friend to the unjust, surely if future goods are acquired by present evils, why for us the arduous path of virtues, why the hard labour of obtaining justice, why the ceaseless torment of preserving innocence among the wicked? Let human crimes be increased, that the heavenly goodness may overflow; let us do evil, as he said, that good may come (Rom. 3); let us continue in sin, that grace may abound. To these things, brethren, the same Apostle who asks himself answers: 'God forbid. For we that are dead to sin, how shall we still live therein?' When he says 'God forbid,' he has thus execrated the understanding and the sense of the unwise:
95:3
since the physician profits not the wound but the cure and health; he takes joy not in the rottenness, nor in the diseases, but in health alone. So too God, who according to the greatness of the wound applied the greatness and vigour of the medicine, bestowed grace not upon sin but upon man; He poured out the shower of His mercy not to multiply but to blot out offences. Let no one, no one, so congratulate himself on his disease that he should wish to remain in the wound. He is ungrateful to the physician, an enemy to the cure, who ever burns to be treated and never desires here to be healed; and thus wishes God's grace to overflow through his sins, so that he desires his sins to be heaped up for himself. Wretched is he who by such a will strives to be guilty through pardon.
95:4
This madness, brethren, is to be fled, to be fled, which even after the cure is held captive by love of diseases; for relapsing sickness is more often lethal. But as to what he said, 'For we that are dead to sin,' he here speaks a figure of the present time; for he said that we are dead to sin, he did not say that sin is now wholly dead to us; because although sin itself, as to the act of the deed, is dead in the saints and faithful, yet it lives, and still rages unto our death. But then sin itself shall die in us, when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, and the word shall have been fulfilled which is written: 'O death, where is thy sting? O hell, where is thy victory?'
95:5
Aculeus autem mortis peccatum est (I Cor. xv).Vivitautem peccato, qui ejus, sicutin consequentibus dicit, b concupiscentjis famulatur; et stimulis miserandus inservit, qui obsecundat vitiis, qui criminibus infelici et continua captivitate succumbit,qui quod delicti est esse autumat hoc naturae, et morbo qui est accidens utitur velut opere etbeneficio Conditoris. Etideo ad arguendum taliumignorantiamaddiditdicens: An nescitis quia quicumque in Christo Jesu baptizali sumus, in morte ipsius baptizati sumus ? Consepulli enim sumus illi per baptismum in mortem. Audiautiideles,etintelligant: quemadmodum triduanaDomini sepultura trina demersione figuratur in baptismo;
「死的毒鉤就是罪」(林前十五)。可是那向罪活著的人,正如他在下文所說,乃是服事罪之私慾的人;那可憐人被罪的毒刺所奴役,就是那向罪惡屈服、在不幸而持續的擄掠中向罪行敗降的人,他把屬於罪的當作屬於本性的,並把那本是偶性的疾病當作創造者的作為與恩惠來使用。所以,為要責備這等人的無知,他加上說:「豈不知我們這受洗歸入基督耶穌的人,是受洗歸入他的死嗎?所以我們藉著洗禮歸入死,和他一同埋葬。」讓信者聽而明白:正如主三日的埋葬,藉洗禮中三次的浸入而得表明;
'Now the sting of death is sin' (1 Cor. 15). But he lives to sin who, as he says in what follows, serves its concupiscences; and the wretched man is enslaved to its stings, who yields to vices, who succumbs to crimes in unhappy and continual captivity, who reckons that which is of sin to be of nature, and uses the disease which is an accident as though it were the work and benefit of the Creator. And therefore, to convict the ignorance of such, he added, saying: 'Or know you not, that all we who are baptized in Christ Jesus, are baptized in his death? For we are buried together with him by baptism into death.' Let the faithful hear, and understand: just as the three-day burial of the Lord is figured by the threefold immersion in baptism;
95:6
ut resurrexisse cum Christo, et si necdum corpore, vitae jam novitate congaudeant; sitque totushomovirtutum domicilium,qui receptaculum fuerat ante vitiorum. Ut, sicut dixit, quomodo Christus surrexit a mOI'tuis pergloriam Patris, ita et nos in novitate vitæ ambulemus. Cbristus quidquid suarum virtutum est, refert ad gloriam Patris; et homo, cujus suum nihil est, sibi vindicare quod per Christum resurrexit ela borat. Quod autem dixit: In novitate vit æ ambulemus, quæ superius diximus, illa confirmat, ut si necdumhoc corpore, vita tamen jam totus immutatus incedat; intelligat se, et dominetur elementis, qui elementis hactenus per ignorantiam serviebat;
好叫他們歡喜自己已與基督一同復活,雖然身體尚未如此,卻已在生命的新樣中;並叫那從前作眾惡容器的整個人,成為眾德的居所。正如他所說:「原是叫我們一舉一動有新生的樣式,像基督藉著父的榮耀從死裡復活一樣。」基督把祂自己一切的德行都歸給父的榮耀;而人本無一物屬己,卻竭力要把自己藉基督而復活歸功於自己。至於他所說「叫我們有新生的樣式」,這印證了我們上面所說:人雖尚未在這身體裡,卻已在生命上全然改變而行事;好叫那從前因無知而服事萬物元素的人,如今認識自己,並轄制那些元素;
so that they may rejoice to have risen with Christ, and, though not yet in body, yet already in newness of life; and that the whole man may be the dwelling-place of virtues, who before had been the receptacle of vices. That, as he said, 'like as Christ rose from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we also may walk in newness of life.' Christ refers whatever is of His own virtues to the glory of the Father; and man, whose nothing is his own, labours to claim for himself that he rose through Christ. But as to what he said, 'Let us walk in newness of life,' it confirms what we said above, that though not yet in this body, yet already wholly changed in life he may walk; that he may understand himself, and may have dominion over the elements, who until now through ignorance was serving the elements;
95:7
largiatur sua per gloriam,qui prius turpiterfurabatur aliena; et qui carnis exercebat illicita, contemnat etiam licentias corporales; et qui innocentiam hactenus impie moliebatur exstinguere, pro innocentia gloriosius ipse moriatur. Et quid plura ? Si ex vetere homine jam novus effectus est, vitiorum gurgitemin fontem commutet ipse virtutum. Usque ad finem autem lectionis hoc ingerit beatus Apostolus, hoc demonstrat, illum posse cum Cbristo vivere, illumregnare cum Christo,quiresurgentis Christi innocentiam sequitur, imitatur vitam, implere nititur sanctitatem. Quod dicit: Ut destruatur corpus peccati; destruatur, fratres,actu, non substantia;
願那從前卑鄙地偷竊別人之物的人,如今藉榮耀慷慨施與己物;願那從前行肉體不法之事的人,連身體上合法的放縱也加以輕看;願那從前不虔地竭力要消滅無辜的人,如今為無辜之故更榮耀地捨己而死。還要多說甚麼呢?他若已從舊人變作新人,就當把眾惡的漩渦變為眾德的泉源。這位有福的使徒直講到經文的末了,都在切切強調並顯明這事:那跟隨復活基督之無辜、效法祂的生命、竭力成全祂之聖潔的人,才能與基督同活,才能與基督同作王。至於他所說「使罪身滅絕」——弟兄們,願這滅絕是在行為上,而非在實體上;
let him bestow his own through glory, who before basely stole what was another's; and let him who practised the unlawful things of the flesh despise even bodily liberties; and let him who until now was impiously striving to extinguish innocence, more gloriously die himself for the sake of innocence. And what more? If from the old man he has now been made new, let him change the whirlpool of vices into the fountain of virtues. And unto the end of the reading the blessed Apostle presses this home, this he demonstrates: that he can live with Christ, he can reign with Christ, who follows the innocence of the risen Christ, imitates His life, and strives to fulfil His holiness. As to what he says: 'That the body of sin may be destroyed' — let it be destroyed, brethren, in act, not in substance;
95:8
opere,non figura,quia peccato,non Deo vult hominem perire, qui ait: Existimate vos mortuos esse peccato, vivere autem Deo. Etsupernae libertati, fratres, restituere hominem tota pietate contendit, qui dicit. Non regnet peccatum in vestro mortali corpore. Et iterum: Peccatum vobis non dominetur. Non dixit, Non veniat ad vos; non dixit, Non provocet, non titillet; sed, Non regnet, non dominetur, confligat ad vincentis gloriam, dimicet et decidat ad triumphum vicloris; et tandem sedoleat impia peccatidominatio a servis quondam suis tota securitate calcari: et crudelis tyrannus in gemiscat subjectum se suorum pedibus captivorum;
是在所行之事上,而非在表號上;因為祂願人向罪死,不向神死,正如祂所說:「這樣,你們向罪也當看自己是死的;向神卻當看自己是活的。」弟兄們,祂以全然的憐憫竭力要使人恢復屬天的自由,正如祂所說:「不要容罪在你們必死的身上作王。」又說:「罪必不能作你們的主。」他沒有說:不要讓罪臨到你們;沒有說:不要讓它挑動、撩撥你們;乃是說:不要讓它作王,不要讓它作主。讓它爭戰,好成就得勝者的榮耀;讓它交鋒而敗落,好成就勝利者的凱旋;並讓罪那不虔的轄制終於哀傷,因它被從前的奴僕安然踐踏;讓那殘忍的暴君呻吟,因它被壓在自己俘虜的腳下;
in deed, not in figure; because he wishes man to perish to sin, not to God, who says: 'Reckon yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God.' And he strives with all mercy, brethren, to restore man to heavenly liberty, who says: 'Let not sin reign in your mortal body.' And again: 'Let not sin have dominion over you.' He did not say, Let it not come to you; he did not say, Let it not provoke, let it not titillate; but, Let it not reign, let it not have dominion. Let it contend unto the glory of the conqueror, let it fight and fall unto the triumph of the victor; and let the impious dominion of sin at last grieve to be trodden down in all security by those who once were its slaves; and let the cruel tyrant groan to be subjected beneath the feet of his own captives;
95:9
and let the veteran enemy bewail that he has come to the triumph of those over whom he had long triumphed.
