The former treatise I composed, O Theophilus, concerning all things which Jesus began both to do and to teach, until the day when, having given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen, He was taken up.
1:2
To many this book is not even so much as known to exist—neither the book itself, nor the one who wrote and composed it.
1:3
For this very reason I have especially judged it right to devote myself to this labour, so as both to instruct those who are ignorant, and not to allow so great a treasure to remain thus hidden and concealed.
1:4
因為這卷書使我們得的益處,並不亞於福音書本身;
For it will be able to profit us no less than the Gospels themselves;
1:5
so filled is it with all wisdom and soundness of doctrine, and with the display of miracles, and especially of those wrought by the Spirit.
1:6
Let us not then hereafter pass it by, but let us examine it with all exactness.
1:7
For the predictions which Christ utters beforehand in the Gospels—here one may see them coming forth into deed, and the truth shining out from the very facts themselves, and the great change of the disciples for the better which the Spirit wrought within them.
1:8
For the things which they heard Christ saying—namely, that 'Everyone who believes in Me, the signs which I do, he also shall do, and greater than these shall he do'—
1:9
and His foretelling to the disciples that they would be brought before governors and kings, and that in their synagogues they would scourge them, and that they would suffer things unbearable, and that they would prevail over all, and that the Gospel would be preached in all the world—all these things, fulfilled with all exactness, one may see in this book, and many others besides which He told them while He was with them.
1:10
Here too you will see the apostles themselves, like winged creatures, coursing over land and sea; and those timid and unintelligent men suddenly become other than they were, despisers of riches and of glory, and of anger and of desire, in a word raised above all things, holding much concord, and nowhere any envy as before, nor the lust for pre-eminence, but every virtue perfected in them, and love shining beyond measure; concerning which He also gave them much charge, saying, 'By this shall all know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.'
1:11
在這裡也可以找到一些教義,若不是有這卷書,就沒有人能如此清楚地認識它們;
There are also doctrines to be found here which, had it not been for this book, would not have become so clearly known to anyone;
1:12
rather, the very sum of our salvation was hidden and obscure, both as regards manner of life and as regards doctrine.
1:13
The greater part of what is contained here consists of the acts of Paul, who laboured more abundantly than all.
1:14
原因就在於:編著這卷書的,是他的門徒,那有福的路加;
And the reason is that the one who composed this book, the blessed Luke, was his disciple;
1:15
whose virtue one may see from many other quarters, but especially from his cleaving inseparably to his Teacher, and following him continually.
1:16
At all events, when Demas and Hermogenes had forsaken him—the one departing to Galatia, the other to Dalmatia—hear what he says concerning this man:
1:17
'Only Luke is with me.'
1:18
And writing to the Corinthians he says concerning him:
1:19
'Whose praise is in the Gospel throughout all the Churches.'
1:20
And when he says, 'He was seen of Cephas, then of the twelve,'
1:21
又說「照著你們所領受的福音」時,他所指的正是這人的福音;
and, 'According to the Gospel which you received,' it is this man's Gospel he means;
1:22
so that one would not err in ascribing this work to him.
1:23
But whenever I say 'to this one,' I mean Christ.
1:24
那麼他為何沒有把一切都記下來,儘管他直到末了都與他同在呢?對此我們要回答:即使這些事對於願意留心的人也已足夠;他們總是專注於當務之急;他們的熱心並不在於撰寫記事;
And why, then, did he not record everything, seeing that he was with him even to the end? To this we would reply, that even these things were sufficient for those willing to give heed; and that they were always intent upon what was pressing; and that their zeal did not lie in writing narratives;
1:25
for they delivered many things also by unwritten tradition.
1:26
Now all the things laid down in this book are worthy of wonder, but especially the condescension of the apostles, which the Spirit also prompted in them, disposing them to dwell upon the discourse of the divine economy.
1:27
For this very reason, though they discoursed so much concerning Christ, they said but little about His divinity, but discoursed more about His humanity, and His passion, and His resurrection, and His ascension.
1:28
For what was being sought for the time being was this: that it should be believed that He rose again and ascended into the heavens.
1:29
As therefore Christ Himself was above all things earnest to show that He came from the Father,
1:30
so also this man was earnest to show that He rose again and was taken up, and departed to Him, and had come from Him.
1:31
For if this had not first been believed, much more, when the addition was made concerning the resurrection and the ascension, would the whole doctrine have seemed incredible to the Jews.
1:32
Wherefore quietly and by little and little he leads them up to higher things.
1:33
And at Athens Paul calls Him simply a man, saying nothing more:
1:34
for if, when Christ Himself discoursed concerning His equality with the Father, they often attempted to stone Him, and on this account called Him a blasphemer, scarcely would they have received this doctrine from the fishermen—and that too when the cross had gone before.
1:35
And why speak of the Jews, when even the disciples themselves at that time, hearing the loftier doctrines, were often troubled and made to stumble? For this reason He also said:
1:36
'I have many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.'
1:37
But if those men could not—men who had been with Him so long a time, and had shared in so many secret things, and had beheld so many miracles—how were men drawn but then for the first time from altars and idols and sacrifices, and cats and crocodiles (for such were the objects of the Greeks' worship), and from all their other evils, suddenly to receive the lofty words of the doctrines? And how could the Jews also, who day by day were taught and had it sounded in their ears by the Law:
1:38
'Hear, O Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is one, and besides Him there is no other'—
1:39
他們既看見祂被釘在十字架的木頭上;
having seen Him nailed upon the wood of the cross;
1:40
不但如此,還親自把祂釘了十字架、埋葬了祂,甚至未曾看見祂復活;
nay rather, having both crucified and buried Him, and not even having beheld Him risen;
1:41
hearing that this very One is God, and equal to the Father—would they not most of all have leapt away and broken off? For this very reason, quietly and by little and little they bring them forward, and make much use of the economy of condescension, but enjoy a more abundant grace of the Spirit, and work greater things than He Himself had done in His name, in order that from both sides they might raise up those who lay prostrate on the ground, and give assurance of the doctrine concerning the resurrection.
1:42
For this indeed is what this book most especially is: a demonstration of the resurrection.
1:43
And this being believed, the rest also went forward on its way.
1:44
The subject then, and the whole aim of the book, as one might say in summing it up roughly, is chiefly this.
1:45
But let us now hear the prologue itself.
1:46
'The former treatise I composed, O Theophilus, concerning all things which Jesus began both to do and to teach.'
1:47
For what reason does he remind him of the Gospel? In order to show his own exactness.
1:48
For in beginning that former work he says:
1:49
'It seemed good to me also, having followed all things accurately from the first, to write to you in order.'
1:50
And he is not content with his own testimony only, but refers the whole matter up to the apostles, saying:
1:51
'Even as they delivered them to us, who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word.'
1:52
Wherefore, having there made his account worthy of belief, he needs no other confirmation here, since he has once been believed, and through that former work has instructed him in the exactness of the truth.
1:53
For he who was accounted worthy of belief to write what he had heard, and
1:54
who was believed, much more would he who composed these things—which he had not received from others, but which he himself had seen and heard—be justly worthy of belief.
1:55
For if you received the things of Christ, he says, much more the things of the apostles.
1:56
What then? Is the matter mere history, and is the account devoid of the Spirit? By no means.
1:57
How so? Because the things which those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word delivered to him were of the Spirit.
1:58
他為何不說「正如那些蒙聖靈看為配得的人所交付我們的」,卻說「那些從起初親眼看見的人」呢?因為這對信心而言最為可信——就是從親眼見證的人那裡學來的;
And why did he not say, 'Even as they delivered to us who were counted worthy of the Holy Spirit,' but, 'Those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses'? Because this is most of all worthy of credit for faith—to have learned from eyewitnesses;
1:59
whereas the other would have seemed to the foolish to be arrogance and pride.
1:60
Wherefore John also spoke thus:
1:61
'I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.'
1:62
And Christ too discourses thus to Nicodemus, who was of a somewhat gross understanding:
1:63
'What we know we speak, and what we have seen we bear witness, and no one receives our witness.'
1:64
And again, showing that it is possible to bear witness of many things also from sight, He said to the disciples:
1:65
'And you also bear witness of Me, because you have been with Me from the beginning.'
1:66
And the apostles themselves in many places speak thus:
1:67
'We are witnesses, and the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.'
1:68
And after these things, giving assurance of the resurrection, Peter said:
1:69
'We who ate and drank with Him.'
1:70
For they more readily received the testimony of the men who had been with Him, because as yet they fell far short of the conception concerning the Spirit.
1:71
為此,約翰在撰寫他的福音書時,也說他親眼看見了,當他論到血與水時,把他親眼所見擺在他們面前,作為最大的見證;
For this reason John too, in the composition of his Gospel, said that he himself saw, when he was discoursing about the blood and the water, setting down his own eyesight for them in place of the greatest testimony;
1:72
and yet the things that come from the Spirit are more exact than eyesight — but not among the unbelieving.
1:73
Now that this man partook of the Spirit is clear from many quarters: from the signs that are now wrought, from the fact that even ordinary people at that time received a share of the Spirit, from the testimony of Paul (for 'whose praise,' he says, 'is in the Gospel'), and from the vote cast at his ordination.
1:74
But he was also ordained by the Churches as our fellow-traveller in this grace which is ministered by us.
1:75
因為他並不說:「我所傳的頭一個福音」;
For he does not say, 'The first Gospel which I preached';
1:76
but, 'I made the first treatise,' reckoning the appellation of Gospel to be too great for himself.
1:77
And yet the Apostle adorns him from this very point, saying:
1:78
'Whose praise is in the Gospel.'
1:79
But he himself speaks modestly and says:
1:80
「提阿非羅啊,我已經作了前一部書,論到耶穌開頭所行所教訓的一切事」;
'I made the first treatise concerning all things, O Theophilus, which Jesus began both to do and to teach';
1:81
not simply 'concerning all things,' but from the beginning to the end.
1:82
'For until the day,' he says, 'in which He was taken up.'
1:83
And indeed John shows that it was not possible to write everything.
1:84
For wishing to declare this, after saying, 'Which if they were written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain,' he adds, 'the books that should be written.'
1:85
那麼,有人問,這人怎能說「論到一切事」呢?其實他並未說「一切事」,而是說「論到一切事」;
How then, one says, does this man speak 'concerning all things'? But he did not say 'all things,' but 'concerning all things';
1:86
正如人所說的,是概略而籠統地說;
as one might say, in a large and summary way;
1:87
or he speaks 'concerning all things,' meaning those that are essential and pressing.
1:88
Then he shows also of what sort of 'all things' he means.
1:89
'Which Jesus began both to do and to teach,' hinting at the miracles and the teachings.
1:90
And not this only, but that even while doing He was teaching.
1:91
Behold too his benevolent and apostolic disposition, if even for the sake of one person he took such pains as to write a whole Gospel.
1:92
'That you might have,' he says, 'the certainty concerning the words in which you were instructed.'
1:93
For indeed he had heard Christ saying:
1:94
'It is not the will of My Father that one of these little ones should perish.'
1:95
他既是寫給提阿非羅一人,為何不作成一卷書,卻分成兩個主題呢?是為了清楚明白,也為了讓聽者得以喘息;
And why did he not make one book, writing to the one Theophilus, but divided it into two subjects? For the sake of clearness, and to give the hearer a breathing-space;
1:96
and moreover, the treatises are also distinct in their subject-matter.
1:97
Consider how Christ made His own words worthy of belief through His deeds.
1:98
He exhorted concerning gentleness, and said:
1:99
'Learn of Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart.'
1:100
He taught men to be without possessions, and this too was shown through His deeds:
1:101
'The Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head,' He says.
1:102
Again, He commanded men to love their enemies.
1:103
He taught this upon the cross, praying for those who were crucifying Him.
1:104
He said, 'To him who would go to law with you and take your tunic, leave him your cloak also.'
1:105
But He gave not His garments only, but even His blood.
1:106
Thus also He commanded His disciples to do.
1:107
For nothing is colder than a teacher who philosophizes only in words.
1:108
For this is the mark not of a teacher, but of a hypocrite.
1:109
為此,使徒們先以他們的生活教導人,然後才用言語;
For this reason the apostles first taught by their manner of life, and then by their words;
1:110
or rather, they had no need even of words, since their deeds cried aloud.
1:111
人若把祂的受難也稱為一種作為,也不算錯;
Nor would one err in calling even His Passion an action;
1:112
for in suffering He accomplished that great and marvellous work, abolishing death and effecting all the rest.
1:113
'Until the day on which, having given commandment through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom He had chosen, He was taken up.'
1:114
'Having given commandment through the Spirit,' that is, having spoken to them spiritual words, nothing human.
1:115
So then one may say either this, or that He gave them commandment through the Spirit.
1:116
Do you see how he still discourses humbly concerning Him, as He Himself also did concerning Himself, saying:
1:117
'But if I by the Spirit of God cast out demons'? For indeed the Holy Spirit also wrought in that temple.
1:118
And what did He command? 'Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.'
1:119
使徒們所受的稱讚何等之大,既有這樣的事託付給他們;
Great is the encomium of the apostles, when such things are entrusted to them;
1:120
我是指普世的救恩;
I mean the salvation of the whole world;
1:121
他們的話語滿有聖靈;
when their words are full of the Spirit;
1:122
這正是祂說「藉著聖靈」時所暗示的;
which indeed He hinted at when He said, 'through the Holy Spirit';
1:123
that is, 'And the words which I have spoken to you are Spirit.'
1:124
And he says this, thereby leading the hearer on to a desire to learn the commandments, and rendering the apostles worthy of belief, seeing that they were about to speak the things of the Spirit and the commandments of Christ.
1:125
'Having therefore given commandment,' he says, 'He was taken up.'
1:126
He did not say 'He ascended,' since he is still discoursing as concerning a man.
1:127
如此看來,甚至在復活之後,祂仍教訓門徒;
So then, even after the resurrection He taught the disciples;
1:128
but this period of time no one has related to us with full accuracy.
1:129
約翰確實比其他人更多提及此事,這位路加也是如此;
But John indeed dwells upon it more than the others, and this one too;
1:130
然而沒有人清楚報導了一切(因為他們正急於趨向另一件事);
yet no one has reported all things clearly (for they were hastening on to another matter);
1:131
我們卻是藉著使徒學到了這些事;
but we learned these things through the apostles;
1:132
'To whom also He presented Himself alive.'
1:133
Having spoken first about the ascension, he speaks also about the resurrection.
1:134
For since he had said that 'He was taken up,' lest you should suppose that He was taken up by others, he added:
1:135
'To whom also He presented Himself alive.'
1:136
For if in the greater matter He presented Himself, much more in the lesser.
1:137
Do you see how imperceptibly he scatters in these great doctrines? 'Being seen by them through forty days.'
1:138
For He was not with them continually then, as He was before the resurrection.
1:139
He did not say 'forty days,' but 'through forty days.'
1:140
For He would come and stand by them, and then fly away again.
1:141
Why so? Because He was lifting up their minds and no longer permitting them to be disposed toward Him in the same way as before.
1:142
And He did not do this without purpose, but was establishing both points with exactness: that the resurrection should be believed, and that henceforth He should be reckoned as greater than merely a man.
1:143
And yet these two things were opposed to one another.
1:144
因為要使人相信復活,就必須有許多屬人的表現發生;
For in order that the resurrection might be believed, many human things had to occur;
1:145
but for the other purpose, the very opposite.
1:146
Nevertheless both came to pass, each at its fitting season.
1:147
But why did He appear not to all, but only to the apostles? Because to the multitude He would have seemed to be a phantom, since they did not know the ineffable nature of the mystery.
1:148
For if even the disciples themselves at first disbelieved and were troubled, and needed to touch Him with the hand and to share a table, what was it likely the multitude would have felt? For this very reason He makes the proof of the resurrection indubitable by the signs, so that the resurrection might be made manifest not only to those then living, but also to all who came afterward.
1:149
For what came to those men from the sight of the signs, this same thing was destined to come afterward to all men from faith.
1:150
For this reason too we reason with the unbelievers on this very ground.
1:151
For if He did not rise, but remains dead, how did the apostles work signs in His name? But did they not work signs? How then was our nation formed? For surely they will not contend against this too, nor fight against what is plainly seen.
1:152
So that whenever they say no signs were done, they only shame themselves the more.
1:153
For this is the greatest sign of all: that the whole inhabited world ran to Him without signs, having been caught as in a net by twelve poor and unlettered men.
1:154
因為這些漁夫得勝並非靠著錢財的豐富,也非靠著言語的智慧,或任何這類的東西;
For it was not by wealth of money, nor by wisdom of words, nor by any other such thing that these fishermen prevailed;
1:155
so that even against their will they will confess that there was a divine power in them, for it is impossible that human strength could ever have accomplished so much.
1:156
For this reason too He Himself remained forty days after the resurrection, furnishing proof over the long span of time by the sight of His own person, that they might not suppose what they saw to be a phantom.
1:157
And not even with this was He content, but He added also the sharing of a table.
1:158
Which very thing He also says as He proceeds:
1:159
And this too the apostles themselves always made a proof of the resurrection, saying:
1:160
'We who ate and drank together with Him.'
1:161
And what He did while appearing, He shows by what He adds, saying:
1:162
'Being seen by them, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God.'
1:163
But since they had also grown weary and were troubled at what had already happened, and were about henceforth to go forth to great contests, He revived them with words about things to come: He commanded them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to await the promise of the Father.
1:164
First He led them out into Galilee, while they were still fearful and trembling, that they might hear what was said with a sense of security.
1:165
Then, after they had heard and had spent forty days together with Him, He charged them not to depart from Jerusalem.
1:166
為何如此呢?正如沒有人容許將要衝入敵陣的兵丁出去,直到他們全副武裝;
Why so? Just as no one allows soldiers who are about to plunge into a throng to go forth until they are armed;
1:167
也沒有人容許馬匹在得著駕車者之前就從起跑柵欄向前奔出;
nor allows horses to spring forward from the barrier until they have taken on their charioteer;
1:168
so also He did not permit them to appear in the battle-line before the descent of the Spirit, lest they should become easy to overcome and easy to capture by the multitude.
1:169
And not for this reason alone, but also because there were many who were about to believe there in that very place.
1:170
And besides this, again, that none might say that they had left those who knew them and had come to boast among strangers, for this reason they furnish the proofs of the resurrection among the very men who had killed Him, among the very men who had crucified Him and had buried Him, in the very city in which the lawless deed had been dared, so that all those outside as well might be silenced.
1:171
For when the very men who had crucified Him are seen also to have believed, it is quite plain that both the cross and the lawlessness of the deed were exposed, and that the proof of the resurrection was abundant.
1:172
Then, that they might not say, 'How then shall we be able to remain among defiled and murderous men, and among so great a multitude, being few and of low estate?'—see how He dissolves their anxiety, saying:
1:173
'But to await the promise of the Father, which you heard from Me.'
1:174
And when did they hear it, one may ask? When He said:
1:175
'It is expedient for you that I go away.'
1:176
'For if I do not go away, the Comforter will not come to you.'
1:177
And again, 'I will ask the Father, and He will send you another Comforter, that He may abide with you.'
1:178
And why did the Spirit come neither while He was present nor immediately after He had departed, but He Himself ascended on the fortieth day, while the Spirit came when the day of Pentecost was fully accomplished? And how, if He had not yet come, did He say, 'Receive the Holy Spirit'? It was in order that He might make them receptive and sufficient for the reception.
1:179
For if Daniel, when about to see an angel, was left utterly spent, how much more these men, when about to receive so great a grace.
1:180
Either, then, this is what one must say, or that He spoke of what was to be as though it had already happened, just as when He says, 'You shall tread upon serpents and scorpions, and upon all the power of the enemy.'
1:181
But why did the Spirit not come at once, right then? They had to come into a longing for the thing, and so receive the grace.
1:182
For this reason, when He Himself had flown away, then that other came.
1:183
For while He was present, they would not have been in so great an expectation.
1:184
For this reason the Spirit does not come immediately after His ascent, but after eight or nine days.
1:185
So we too are then most aroused toward God, when we are placed in need.
1:186
For this reason too John then most of all sends his disciples to Christ, when they were about to be in need of Jesus, while he himself was dwelling in the prison.
1:187
And otherwise too: it was necessary that our nature should first appear in heaven, and that the reconciliation should be brought to completion, and then that the Spirit should come, and that the joy should become pure.
1:188
因為若在祂還在的時候,一位離去而另一位留下,那安慰就不至於這樣大;
For if, while He was present, the one had departed and the other had remained, the consolation would not have been so great;
1:189
for indeed they clung to Him and could scarcely be torn away.
1:190
Wherefore also, consoling them, He said:
1:191
'It is expedient for you that I go away.'
1:192
For this reason too He waits out the intervening days, so that, having grieved a little and having been placed in need (as I said), they might reap the joy whole and pure.
1:193
But if the Spirit were something lesser, the consolation would not have been sufficient.
1:194
And how too did He say, 'It is expedient for you'? For this reason the greater parts of the teaching were reserved for the Spirit, that they might not reckon Him something lesser.
1:195
But consider how great a necessity He laid upon them to be in Jerusalem, by promising that the Spirit would be given there.
1:196
For in order that they might not flee again after His ascension, by this expectation He holds them all fast there, as by some bond.
1:197
And having said, 'To await the promise of the Father, which you heard from Me,' He added:
1:198
'For John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit not many days from now.'
1:199
He now shows the difference between Himself and John, no longer in a veiled manner as before this (for indeed He greatly veiled the saying when He said:
1:200
'But he that is least in the kingdom of the heavens is greater than he'), but now more openly.
1:201
'John,' He says, 'baptized with water, but you shall be baptized in the Holy Spirit.'
1:202
He no longer makes use of the testimony, but merely calls to remembrance the person, leading them to the memory of the things said by him, and shows that they had now become greater than John, seeing that they too were about to baptize in the Spirit.
1:203
And He did not say, 'But I baptize you in the Holy Spirit,' but, 'You shall be baptized,' teaching us to be humble-minded.
1:204
因為從約翰的見證看來,這事如今已是明顯的,就是那施浸者原是祂,因約翰曾說:「祂要在聖靈與火裡給你們施浸」;
For this was now plain from the testimony of John, that it was He who baptized, since John had said that 'He shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and with fire';
1:205
wherefore He made mention of him alone.
1:206
如此說來,福音書乃是記載基督所行所言之事的歷史;
The Gospels, then, are a history of the things which Christ did and said;
1:207
but the Acts are of the things which the other Comforter said and did.
1:208
誠然,那時祂自己也行了許多事,正如如今基督仍在運行,如同那時一樣;
And indeed at that time He Himself did many things, just as even now Christ works, as He did then also;
1:209
只是那時是藉著殿,如今是藉著使徒;
but then through the temple, and now through the apostles;
1:210
那時祂進入童貞女的腹中,塑成了一個殿,如今卻進入使徒的魂裡;
and then He came into a virgin's womb and fashioned a temple, but now into apostolic souls;
1:211
And then indeed in the likeness of a dove, but now in the likeness of fire.
1:212
Why so? There, to signify gentleness; here, to signify also the power to punish.
1:213
And He also opportunely calls to mind the judgment.
1:214
因為當需要赦免罪過的時候,就需要極大的溫柔;
For when sins had to be forgiven, there was need of much gentleness;
1:215
but since we have obtained the gift, it is thenceforth a time also for judgment and for scrutiny.
1:216
但祂怎麼說「你們要受洗」,樓房上明明沒有水呢?因為那更為主要的乃是聖靈,水也是藉著聖靈才發生功效的;
But how does He say, 'Ye shall be baptized,' when there was no water in the upper room? Because the more principal thing is the Spirit, through whom the water also works its effect;
1:217
正如祂自己也被說是受了膏,其實祂並沒有在任何地方用油膏抹,乃是領受了聖靈;
just as He Himself too is said to have been anointed, though He was nowhere anointed with oil, but received the Spirit;
1:218
and in another way too one may find that they were baptized with water as well, and at various times.
1:219
For in our case both take place at one and the same time, but then they took place separately.
1:220
因為起初他們是受了約翰的洗;
For at the beginning they were baptized by John;
1:221
for if harlots and publicans went to that baptism, much more those who were afterward to be baptized by the Spirit.
1:222
Then, lest they should say that the matter was forever in promises (for indeed much had already been discoursed concerning it), and lest they should suppose it to be some unsubstantial working, leading them away from such a suspicion, He says, 'Not after these many days.'
1:223
祂並沒有指明是甚麼時候,好叫他們常常儆醒;然而祂說那日子近了,免得他們鬆懈;
And He did not make plain when, so that they might always be watchful; but that it would be near, He said, that they might not grow slack;
1:224
yet when, He did not further add, that they might ever be sober.
1:225
He confirms it, I mean, by the nearness of the time, but also by saying, 'The promise which ye have heard of me.'
1:226
'Not now for the first time do I tell you,' He says, 'but I have already promised what I will most certainly do.'
1:227
Why then dost thou marvel if He does not tell the day of the consummation, when this day, so near at hand, He was unwilling to make manifest? And that with good reason, that they might always be watchful and in expectation and in earnest care.
1:228
For it is not possible, no, it is not possible, to enjoy grace while not being sober.
1:229
難道你沒有看見以利亞也對他的門徒說甚麼嗎?「你若看見我被接去,就必如此為你成就」;
Or dost thou not see what Elijah too says to his disciple? 'If thou see me taken up, it shall be so unto thee';
1:230
that is, 'This which thou askest shall come to pass for thee.'
1:231
And Christ too everywhere said to those who came to Him:
1:232
'Dost thou believe?' For unless we are made intimate with what is given, we do not even perceive the benefit very keenly.
1:233
Grace did not come immediately, but three days intervened, during which he was blind, being scoured by fear and prepared beforehand.
1:234
因為正如染紫紅色的人,先用某些別的東西把那要受染的物件預先處理,好叫那顏色不致褪去;
For just as those who dye purple first prepare with certain other things that which is to receive the dye, so that the color may not fade;
1:235
even so here too God first makes ready the soul that has been thus prepared with care, and then pours out the grace.
1:236
For this reason too He did not send the Spirit immediately, but at Pentecost.
1:237
但若有人問說:「我們為甚麼不在這時節施洗呢?」我們就要這樣說:那恩典無論在那時或如今都是一樣的;
But if anyone should say, 'For what reason do we too not baptize at this season?' we would say this: that the grace is the same both then and now;
1:238
but the mind is made loftier now, being prepared beforehand by fasting.
1:239
And the season of Pentecost too has a certain reason not unfitting.
1:240
What manner of reason is this? The Fathers deemed baptism to be a sufficient bridle for evil desire and a great instruction, so as to be temperate even in a season of luxury.
1:241
Even as, therefore, gathering together with Christ Himself and sharing His table, let us do nothing carelessly, but pass our days in fastings and prayers and much temperance.
1:242
因為若一個將要就任世俗職位的人,終其一生為自己預備,並且為要得著某種尊位,既花費錢財,又耗費光陰,並忍受千萬的勞苦;
For if one who is about to enter upon a worldly office prepares for himself all his life long, and, in order to obtain some rank, both spends money and consumes time and endures ten thousand toils;
1:243
of what should we be worthy, who approach the kingdom of heaven with so great slothfulness, and are neither earnest before receiving nor careful after receiving? For it is because of this that we are slothful after receiving, because before receiving we were not watchful.
1:244
For this reason many, immediately after receiving, returned to their former vomit, and became worse, and drew upon themselves a more grievous punishment; being freed indeed from their former sins, but by this the more greatly provoking the Judge, in that, having been freed from so great a sickness, not even so were they brought to sobriety, but suffered that very thing which Christ threatened to the paralytic, saying:
1:245
「不要再犯罪,免得你遭遇更重的事」;
'Sin no more, lest a worse thing befall thee';
1:246
and that which He foretold concerning the Jews, showing that they would suffer things irremediable through their thanklessness:
1:247
'If I had not come and spoken to them,' He says, 'they had not had sin.'
1:248
So that the sins committed afterward become double and fourfold.
1:249
How so? Because after the honor we become thankless and wicked.
1:250
And for this reason the laver henceforth helps us not at all toward obtaining a milder punishment.
1:251
Did anyone have grievous sins, either having murdered, or committed adultery, or wrought some other more grievous thing? These were remitted through the laver.
1:252
因為沒有,實在沒有任何一樣罪,或任何一樣不敬虔的事,是不向這恩賜屈服讓步的;
For there is not, there is not any sin, nor any impiety, which does not yield and give place to the gift;
1:253
再者,有人犯了姦淫又殺了人;
Again someone committed adultery and murder;
1:254
先前的姦淫已經被解除,那殺人的罪也已蒙赦免,並不追討回來(因為神的恩賜和選召是沒有後悔的);
the former adultery has been loosed, and that murder has been forgiven, and is not recalled (for the gifts and the calling of God are without repentance);
1:255
but for the things done after baptism we pay so great a penalty as though even those former things had been recalled, and things far worse.
1:256
For the sin is no longer single, but double and threefold.
1:257
Ὅτι δὲ μεί.
And that the penalty for these sins is greater, hear what Paul says:
1:258
「人干犯摩西的律法,憑兩三個見證人,尚且不得憐恤而死;
'He that despised Moses' law dies without mercy under two or three witnesses;
1:259
of how much worse punishment, think ye, shall he be deemed worthy, who has trodden under foot the Son of God, and the blood of the Covenant
1:260
counted a common thing, and has done despite unto the Spirit of grace?' Perhaps we have now turned many away from receiving baptism.
1:261
But it is not for this reason that we have said these things, but that, having received it, they may abide in temperance and in much forbearance.
1:262
'If thou hadst feared, thou wouldst have received it and kept it.'
1:263
'But for this very reason I do not receive it,' he says, 'because I am afraid.'
1:264
'And to depart thus—art thou not afraid? God is loving to man,' he says.
1:265
'For He is loving to man and helps us.'
1:266
但你,在你當殷勤的地方,卻不搬出這慈愛來;
But thou, where thou oughtest to be diligent, thou dost not put forward this loving-kindness;
1:267
反倒在你想要拖延的地方,那時你才記起它來;
yet where thou wouldst delay, then thou dost remember it;
1:268
and yet this loving-kindness would have its proper occasion, and we shall the more surely obtain it, when we too have contributed the things that come from ourselves.
1:269
因為那把一切都投靠神的人,就算在洗禮之後犯了身為人所難免的那類罪,只要悔改,就必得著慈愛;
For he who has cast the whole upon God, and, sinning after baptism such things as are likely for one who is a man, repenting shall obtain loving-kindness;
1:270
but he who, as it were playing the sophist with God's loving-kindness, departs without a share in the grace, shall have punishment past all entreaty.
1:271
Why dost thou put forward such things against thine own salvation? For it is impossible, impossible, as I for my part think, that one who puts things off with such hopes should accomplish anything noble and good.
1:272
但你,為著甚麼緣故要擔起這樣大的懼怕,並搬出將來之事的不確定呢?你何不把這懼怕轉為勞苦與殷勤,好叫你成為偉大又可欽佩的人呢?哪一樣更好,是懼怕,還是勞作呢?假如有人叫你閒著坐在一間破舊的房子裡,對你說:「你當防備那已朽壞的屋頂會落在你頭上」(因為它或許會落下,或許不會落下);
But thou, on what account dost thou take up so great a fear, and put forward the uncertainty of the future? Why dost thou not change this fear into toil and diligence, that thou mayest become great and admirable? Which is better, to fear, or to labor? If someone seated thee, idle, in a dilapidated house, saying, 'Expect that the roof, being rotten, will fall upon thy head' (for perhaps it will fall, and perhaps it will not fall);
1:273
「但你若不願這樣,就當作工,並住在那更為穩妥的內室裡」;
'but if thou dost not wish this, work, and dwell in the safer chamber';
1:274
which wouldst thou rather have chosen, that idleness with the fear, or this labor with the confidence? Therefore do thou also now do the same.
1:275
因為將來之事的不確定,正像一間破舊的房子,時常威脅著要倒塌;
For the uncertainty of the future is like a certain dilapidated house, ever threatening collapse;
1:276
but this labor, which has toil in it, guarantees safety.
1:277
但願我們絕不至落到這樣大的地步,以致在洗滌之後犯罪;
May it never be, then, that we fall into so great a necessity as to sin after the laver;
1:278
yet even if some such thing should happen, let us not even so despair.
1:279
God is loving to man, and has given us many ways of remission even after these things.
1:280
Only, just as those who sin after the laver are on this account punished more than the catechumens, so those who know that there are remedies of repentance, and yet are unwilling to use them, shall undergo more grievous things.
1:281
For the more the loving-kindness of God is enlarged, so much the more is the punishment increased also, if we do not use that loving-kindness as we ought.
1:282
What are you saying, O man? You who were full of so many evils and given up as hopeless, were suddenly made a friend and raised to the highest honour—not by your own labours, but by the free gift of God—and then you returned again to your former disgrace; and though you deserved to be grievously punished, He did not even so turn away from you, but gave you countless occasions of salvation, through which you might become His friend.
1:283
And while God does all this, you are not willing even so to labour.
1:284
此後你還配得什麼樣的赦免呢?希臘人豈不理當譏笑你,把你當作徒然虛度、毫無用處、白白偷生的蜂子嗎?他們說:「你們的哲理若真有能力,就顯出來吧:這一大群未受洗禮的人算是什麼意思呢?」奧祕本是美好、令人切慕的;
And of what pardon will you henceforth be worthy? And how will the Greeks not justly laugh you to scorn, as a mere drone living idly and to no purpose? For 'If your philosophy is a thing of power,' they say, 'show it: what is the meaning of this multitude of the uninitiated?' Beautiful are the mysteries and to be longed for;
1:285
but let no one receive the laver while at the last gasp.
1:286
因為那時不是領受奧祕的時候,乃是立遺囑的時候;
For that is not the season for the mysteries, but for making one's testament;
1:287
the season for the mysteries is soundness of mind and sobriety of soul.
1:288
For tell me: would anyone in such a condition even choose to draw up a will?
1:289
And even if he should write one, he gives to those who come after a handle for dispute (for this is the very reason they preface these words, saying: 'Being alive, and in my right mind, and in health, I give charge concerning my own affairs').
1:290
How could one who is out of his senses be initiated with any exactness? For if the laws of the outside world would not permit a man who is not thoroughly in health to make dispositions even when deliberating about the affairs of this life, and when he is about to legislate concerning what is his own—
1:291
how, while learning about the kingdom of heaven and those unspeakable good things, will you be able to grasp all clearly, when often you have even been driven distracted by your sickness? And when will you speak
1:292
those words to Christ, being buried together with Him, when you are about to leap away? For indeed one must show one's good will both by works and by words.
1:293
你所行的,正像有人在戰事將要結束時,才想要報名當兵;
But you do the same as if someone should wish to enlist as a soldier when the war is about to be dissolved,
1:294
or as an athlete to strip for the contest after the theatre has already broken up.
1:295
For indeed you receive arms for this purpose, not that you may straightway leap away, but that having taken them you may set up a trophy against the adversary.
1:296
Let no one think the discourse about these matters untimely, because it is not now Lent.
1:297
For it is on this very account that I am pained, that you watch for a season in such matters.
1:298
然而那太監,雖是外邦人,又在旅途之中,行走在大路當中,卻沒有等候時候;
And yet that eunuch, though a barbarian and on a journey, and in the midst of the highway, did not seek for a season;
1:299
nor did the jailer, and that too when he was among prisoners, and saw his teacher scourged and bound, and was for the time about to keep him within.
1:300
But here, though dwelling in no prison nor being on the roads, many put it off, and that when they are at their last breath.
1:301
你若仍舊懷疑基督是神,就當站在外面,連神聖的話語都不要聽,也不要把自己算在慕道者之列;
If, then, you still doubt that Christ is God, stand outside, and do not so much as listen to the divine words, nor number yourself even among the catechumens;
1:302
but if you are confident, and know this clearly, why do you delay? Why do you shrink back and hesitate? 'I am afraid,' you say, 'lest I should sin.'
1:303
But do you not fear the more grievous thing, lest you depart thither laden with so many burdens? For it is not the same thing to fail of grace when it is set before you, and to fail while endeavouring to succeed.
1:304
Tell me now—for suppose He should call you to account—'Why did you not come forward?'
1:305
「你為何沒有成就呢?」——你要怎樣回答?在那件事上,你或者還能推說誡命和德行的沉重難擔;
'Why did you not succeed?'—what will you say? For there, perhaps, you have the burdensomeness of the commandments and of virtue to plead;
1:306
but here there is nothing of the sort.
1:307
For grace it is that freely bestows freedom.
1:308
But you are afraid lest you should sin? Say these things after your baptism.
1:309
Then have the fear, so as to guard the boldness which you have received, not so as to keep from receiving such a gift.
1:310
But as it is, before baptism you are cautious, and after baptism you are careless.
1:311
你要等候四旬齋期嗎?為什麼緣故呢?難道那個時候有什麼特別之處嗎?至少使徒們並不是在逾越節得著恩典,乃是在另一個時候;
But you wait for the season of Lent? For what reason? Has that season anything more in it? At least the apostles were not counted worthy of the grace at the Passover, but at another season;
1:312
那三千人和五千人受洗的時候,也不是逾越節;
and the three thousand and the five thousand, when they were baptized, it was not the season of the Passover;
1:313
and Cornelius, and the eunuch, and many others besides.
1:314
Let us not, therefore, wait for a season, lest by delaying and putting it off we depart empty and destitute of so many good things.
1:315
How much, do you think, I am pained when I hear that someone has been carried off hence uninitiated, when I consider those intolerable punishments, that inexorable retribution? How again am I stung, when I see others come to their last breath and not even thereby brought to their senses? For this reason many things unworthy of this gift take place.
1:316
For whereas one ought to be glad, and to dance for joy, and to rejoice, and to be crowned, when another is being initiated, the wife of the sick man, when she hears that the physician has ordered this, is cut to the heart and wails as if over some calamity, and there are shrieks and lamentations everywhere throughout the house, as though over condemned men led away on their last journey.
1:317
And he too, on the other hand, is then the more pained; and even if he should recover from his sickness, he grieves the more bitterly, as though he had been wronged.
1:318
For since he had not prepared himself for virtue, he thereafter shrinks back and draws away from the conflicts that follow.
1:319
你看見魔鬼設下何等的詭計、招來何等的羞恥、何等的譏笑嗎?所以我們要擺脫這譏笑;
Do you see what devices the devil contrives, how great the shame, how great the ridicule? Let us therefore rid ourselves of this ridicule;
1:320
let us live as Christ commanded.
1:321
For this reason He gave baptism: not that we should receive it and then depart, but that, living on, we should show forth fruits.
1:322
你怎能對一個正要離世、正被砍下的人說「要結果子」呢?你豈沒有聽見「聖靈所結的果子,就是仁愛、喜樂、和平」嗎?那麼,為何反倒有相反的事發生呢?妻子本當歡喜,卻站在旁邊哀哭;
How will you say 'Bear fruit' to one who is departing, who is cut off? Have you not heard that 'The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace'? How then do the contrary things come to pass? For indeed the wife stands by mourning, when she ought to rejoice;
1:323
兒女本當一同歡樂,卻在旁悲泣;
the children lamenting, when they ought to rejoice together;
1:324
那病人自己躺在那裡,神智昏暗,滿是紛擾慌亂,本當是歡慶的時候;
the man himself lying there darkened, full of tumult and confusion, when there ought to be festal celebration;
1:325
filled with great despondency, because of the orphanhood of his children, because of the widowhood of his wife, because of the desolation of his house.
1:326
Is it thus that one comes forward to the mysteries? Tell me:
1:327
這是能忍受的嗎?若君王頒下詔書,釋放獄中的囚犯,人就歡欣快樂;
is it endurable? If a king sends letters, releasing those in prison, there is gladness and joy;
1:328
but when God sends down the Spirit from heaven, remitting not deficiencies of money, but whole sins entire—
1:329
你們卻都哀哭悲嘆嗎?這是何等的反常呢?我還未提到那洗禮的水甚至澆在死人身上,聖物被丟棄在地上;
and you all mourn and lament? What is this inconsistency? I do not yet mention that water has been poured even upon the dead, and the holy things cast upon the ground;
1:330
but we are not the cause of these things, but the thankless and senseless.
1:331
因此我勸你們,放下這一切,收斂自己,滿懷熱切地前來受洗,好叫我們在今生既顯出極大的殷勤,就得著將來的坦然無懼;
Wherefore I exhort you to lay aside all these things, to collect yourselves, and to come forward to baptism with all eagerness, so that, having shown great earnestness even in the present life, we may obtain the boldness that is to come;
1:332
which may it be granted us all to attain, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom be glory and dominion unto the ages of ages. Amen.
