So the soldiers, according to the order given them, took Paul and brought him by night to Antipatris.
51:2
第二天,他們讓馬兵護送他前行,自己就回營樓去了;
And on the next day they left the horsemen to go on with him, and returned to the barracks;
51:3
who, coming to Caesarea and delivering the letter to the governor, presented Paul also before him.
51:4
Just as bodyguards escort some king, they conducted him with so great a multitude and by night, fearing the wrath of the people's onset.
51:5
When, therefore, they had brought him out of the city, then they withdrew.
51:6
But the tribune would not have sent him off with so great security, had he not himself found nothing to condemn in him, and had he not known the murderous disposition of those men.
51:7
巡撫讀了那信,問他是哪一省的人,既曉得他是基利家人,就說:「等告你的人來了,我要細聽你的申訴」;
And having read the letter and asked from what province he was, and having learned that he was from Cilicia, he said, 'I will hear you fully when your accusers also arrive;'
51:8
and he commanded him to be kept under guard in Herod's praetorium.
51:9
呂西亞已經替他作了申辯;
Lysias had already made his defence on his behalf;
51:10
but nevertheless the Jews still set upon him, and forestall the hearer, and again he is cast into bonds—and hear how:
51:11
And after five days the high priest Ananias came down with the elders and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who laid information before the governor against Paul.
51:12
See how not even so did they desist, but they come, though hindered by countless obstacles—so that even there they were put to shame.
51:13
And when he had been called, Tertullus began to accuse him, saying:
51:14
'Seeing that through you we enjoy much peace, and that reforms are being brought about for this nation through your forethought, we accept it in every way and everywhere, most excellent Felix, with all thankfulness.'
51:15
'But, that I may not further detain you, I entreat you in your clemency to hear us briefly.'
51:16
然而正是你們自己作了這事;
And yet you yourselves have done this very thing;
51:17
what need, then, of an orator? See how this man too, straightway from his opening words, wishes to hand him over as a revolutionary and a stirrer of sedition, and by his flatteries forestalls the judge.
51:18
Then, as though he had much to say, he runs over it and says only this:
51:19
'But, that I may not further detain you—'
51:20
你看他怎樣挑起那審判官施行刑罰的慾望;
See how he casts the judge into a desire for punishment;
51:21
as if he were about to lay hold of one who was overturning the whole world, and as though they prided themselves on it as on some great achievement.
51:22
'For we have found this man a pestilent fellow, and one who stirs up seditions among all the Jews throughout the world, and a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes, who also attempted to profane the temple;'
51:23
'whom also we seized, and would have judged according to our own law.'
51:24
'But Lysias the tribune came upon us, and with great violence took him out of our hands, commanding his accusers to come before you;'
51:25
'from whom you yourself, by examining him, will be able to learn concerning all these things whereof we accuse him.'
51:26
'Stirring up seditions,' he says, 'among the Jews throughout the world.'
51:27
As a destroyer, then, and a common enemy of the nation they slander him, and as a ringleader of the sect of the Nazarenes.
51:28
「拿撒勒人」這稱呼在當時看為是一種羞辱;
This seemed to be a reproach—that of the Nazarenes;
51:29
所以他們把這也提出來,並且再從這一點來毀謗他;
wherefore they brought this forward too, and from this again slandered him;
51:30
See how maliciously they calumniate him as one who had escaped, and had scarcely been caught—and yet he had been seven days in the temple.
51:31
'Whom also we seized, and would have judged according to our own law;'
51:32
as if it were their law to smite, to kill, to lay ambushes.
51:33
Then follows also the accusation against Lysias: 'But Lysias the tribune came upon us, and with great violence took him out of our hands;'
51:34
'doing,' he says, 'a thing that did not befit him.'
51:35
'From whom you yourself, by examining, will be able to know concerning all these things whereof we accuse him.'
51:36
And the Jews also joined in the attack, affirming that these things were so.
51:37
那麼保羅怎麼樣呢?面對這些控告,他默不作聲嗎?絕非如此;
What, then, does Paul do? Does he keep silence at these charges? By no means;
51:38
他反倒再次坦然無懼地開口回答;
but again he speaks with boldness and makes answer;
51:39
而且這也是因為巡撫願意如此;
and this too because the governor willed it;
51:40
And Paul answered, when the governor had beckoned to him to speak:
51:41
'Knowing that for many years you have been a just judge to this nation, I the more cheerfully make my defence concerning myself, since you are able to learn that it is not more than twelve days since I went up to worship in Jerusalem.'
51:42
'And neither in the temple did they find me disputing with anyone or stirring up a crowd, nor in the synagogues, nor throughout the city;'
51:43
'nor can they now prove to you the things whereof they now accuse me.'
51:44
見證一位審判官的公義,這並不是諂媚的話;
These are not words of flattery—to bear witness to a judge's righteousness;
51:45
but rather those other words were flattery, namely to say:
51:46
'Seeing that through you we enjoy much peace.'
51:47
Why, then, do you unjustly stir up sedition? But consider:
51:48
那些人是慫恿人行不義,這人卻是尋求公義;
those men were urging on toward injustice, but this man sought what was just;
51:49
'I the more cheerfully make my defence concerning myself;'
51:50
then he also grounds his argument on the time:
51:51
'For knowing,' he says, 'that for many years you have been a judge.'
51:52
這對於他的證明有何幫助呢?大有幫助;
And what did this contribute to his proof? Much;
51:53
for he shows that the judge himself knows that he has done none of the things whereof he is accused.
51:54
For had he ever stirred up a tumult, the judge, being such, would have known it, and such a thing would not have escaped him.
51:55
Then, since the accuser had nothing to point to in Jerusalem, see what he says:
51:56
'Among all the Jews throughout the world'—piling falsehood upon falsehood.
51:57
For this reason Paul, drawing him away from this point, says: 'I went up to worship;'
51:58
all but making his defence by this, that 'so far am I from stirring up seditions;'
51:59
and he dwells upon this plea of justice, which was strong:
51:60
'And neither in the temple, nor in the city, nor in the synagogue did they find me disputing with anyone.'
51:61
那人固然說「頭目」,彷彿是指一場爭戰、一次集結兵力;
And that man indeed says 'ringleader,' as of a battle and a mustering of forces;
51:62
but this man—see how mildly he answers:
51:63
'But this I confess to you, that according to the Way, which they call a sect, so do I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are according to the law and which are written in the prophets, having hope toward God, which these men themselves also accept, that there shall be a resurrection both of the just and of the unjust.'
51:64
This man brings the law in on his own side, and, by the very words of his defence, claims kinship with the law.
51:65
And confirming what he had said, he again adds:
51:66
And in this I too discipline myself, keeping a conscience void of offense toward God and toward men continually.
51:67
Now after many years I came to bring alms to my nation and offerings, in the course of which they found me purified in the temple, not with a crowd, nor with any tumult.
51:68
Why then did you go up? Why did you come? To worship? To do alms, he says.
51:69
So that this was not the act of a seditious man.
51:70
Then he also casts out their charge to their face, saying without qualification:
51:71
'In the course of which certain Jews from Asia found me;'
51:72
'who ought to have been present before you, and to bring an accusation, if they had anything against me;'
51:73
'or else let these men themselves say what wrong they found in me, when I stood before the council;'
51:74
'except it be for this one voice, that I cried standing among them, that concerning the resurrection of the dead I am this day being judged by you.'
51:75
This is the abundance of a good cause: not to flee one's accusers, but to be ready to give an answer to all.
51:76
'Concerning the resurrection of the dead,' he says, 'I am this day being judged.'
51:77
And he said nothing of what he might reasonably have said—that they plotted against him, that they seized him, that they laid an ambush (for these things are said to have been done by them;
51:78
至於他自己,雖然身處危險之中,卻絕無此類的言行);
but from him, even when danger was present, nothing of the sort);
51:79
but he keeps silence, and only makes his defense, though he had countless things to say.
51:80
This is what also made him illustrious at Caesarea, that he came with so great an array against him.
51:81
'In the course of which,' he says, 'they found me purified.'
51:82
How then did he profane it? For it did not belong to the same man both to purify himself and to worship, and for that very purpose to come and to profane.
51:83
This too carries an appearance of justifying his cause: not to allow the discourse to run to great length, and he shows deference to the judge.
51:84
But to me it seems that on the judge's account also he cut short his defense.
51:85
But let us look at what has been said from the beginning.
51:86
Since before this Tertullus had made a long harangue, showing that he was being cut short, he did not say, 'Hear the matter;'
51:87
but, 'That I be not further tedious to you, I entreat you of your clemency to hear us.'
51:88
或許他是以奉承的手法來鋪陳他的言辭;
Perhaps he thus contrives his speech by way of flattery;
51:89
or else this is truly a token of clemency, if, when one might say much, in order not to give trouble one should say little.
51:90
'For we have found this man a pestilent fellow;'
51:91
'who,' he says, 'also attempted to profane the temple.'
51:92
那麼,倘若他是在別處做這事又如何呢?斷乎不是;
What then, if he had done this elsewhere? By no means;
51:93
but now he says 'attempted' indeed, yet how, he does not add.
51:94
他就這樣把對保羅的控告誇大了;
And the charges against Paul he thus exaggerated;
51:95
but see how he minimizes their own doings.
51:96
'Whom also we took,' he says, 'and would have judged according to our law.'
51:97
'But the chief captain Lysias came upon us, and with great violence took him away out of our hands.'
51:98
在此他表明,他們自己也因來到外邦的公堂受審而蒙冤;若非那人強逼,他們原不會攪擾保羅;並且那人是越權奪走了這人;
Here he shows that they too are wronged in coming to a foreign tribunal, and that they would not have troubled him had that man not compelled them, and how he, without warrant, snatched away the man;
51:99
for the wrongs were against us, and the tribunal ought to have been held among us.
51:100
至於這確是如此,且看下文;
For that this is so, see what follows;
51:101
for he was a forbearing man.
51:102
Then again, lest he should seem to lie, he sets Paul himself as accuser of himself.
51:103
'From whom,' he says, 'you may, by examining him, take knowledge of all these things.'
51:104
接著又有所說之事的見證人;
Then also there are witnesses of what has been said;
51:105
'And the Jews also joined in the charge, affirming that these things were so.'
51:106
The accusers, they themselves are both witnesses and accusers.
51:107
But Paul answers, 'Knowing that you have been for many years a judge of this nation, I do the more cheerfully make my defense.'
51:108
So then he is no stranger, nor an alien, nor an innovator, if indeed for many years he has known the judge.
51:109
And well did he add the word 'righteous,' that he might not look to the high priest, nor to the people, nor to the accuser.
51:110
你看他怎樣沒有被激動至於出言不遜;
See how he was not led into insolence;
51:111
and this, even though there was necessity.
51:112
'Believing,' he says, 'all things which are according to the law.'
51:113
This he said, showing that a man who believes there will be a resurrection would never do such things—a resurrection which these very men also expect.
51:114
他沒有說這些人相信眾先知書上所記的(因為他們其實並不相信);
He did not say of these men that they believe the things written in the prophets (for indeed they did not believe);
51:115
乃是他自己相信一切,並非他們;
but he himself believed all things, not they;
51:116
and how, it would take a long discourse to tell just now.
51:117
He said so much, and nowhere makes mention of Christ.
51:118
But here, having said 'believing,' he introduced also the things concerning Christ; yet for the present he dwells on the doctrine of the resurrection, which was a tenet common to them, and did away with every suspicion of sedition.
51:119
Then also the cause of his going up.
51:120
'To do alms,' he says, 'and offerings to my nation, I came, and this after many years.'
51:121
How then could he have stirred up those to whom he came, having travelled so long a road in order to do so great an alms? 'Not with a crowd,' he says, 'nor with tumult.'
51:122
Everywhere he does away with the notion of sedition.
51:123
And well does he summon the accusers from Asia, saying:
51:124
'Who ought to accuse before you, if they had anything against me.'
51:125
So confident was he of being clean with respect to the things whereof he was accused, that he even summons them.
51:126
他不但沒有把那從亞細亞來的,連那從耶路撒冷來的控告者也沒有排斥;
And not only those from Asia, but also those from Jerusalem does he not cast out as accusers;
51:127
but these also he again summons, adding:
51:128
For it was on this very account that from the beginning they were sorely vexed, because he preached the resurrection.
51:129
for this being shown, the things concerning Christ were easily brought in as well, namely that He rose again.
51:130
他說:「當我站在公會前的時候,他們查出我有甚麼不義的事?」他說「在公會裡」;
'What wrong did they find in me,' he says, 'when I stood before the council?' He said 'in the council;'
51:131
showing that they found nothing, the examination having taken place not in private, but in the presence of the multitude, and with strict inquiry.
51:132
And that I speak the truth in this, they who accuse me concerning this bear witness.
51:133
'And in this I too discipline myself, void of offense.'
51:134
'Having a conscience toward both God and men.'
51:135
For this is the perfect virtue, when we neither give men any handle against us, and are earnest to be void of offense before God.
51:136
'Because of which I cried out,' he says, 'in the council.'
51:137
And he shows their violence by saying, 'I cried out,' as though he were saying:
51:138
他們無法說:「你是藉著施捨的名義行這些事」;
They cannot say, 'You did these things under the pretext of almsgiving';
51:139
因為我並非在群眾之中,也不是在喧嚷之下行這事;
for I did not do this in the midst of a crowd nor with any uproar;
51:140
and besides, when an inquiry was made concerning this matter, nothing further was found.
51:141
Do you see his forbearance, even in the midst of dangers? Do you see his gracious tongue, and how he seeks only one thing—to clear himself of his own charges—not to entangle those men in accusations, except where he might be compelled to do so in making his defense? Even as Christ also said:
51:142
'I have no demon, but I honor my Father.'
51:143
Let us too imitate this man, since he himself was an imitator of Christ.
51:144
If against those who had gone so far as murder and slaughter that man said nothing bitter, what pardon should we deserve, who rage like wild beasts amid reviling and insults, calling our enemies foul and utterly abominable? And what defense shall we have for having enemies at all? Do you not hear that he who honors, honors himself? But we insult ourselves.
51:145
那麼你為何自陷於這控告之中?你為何使自己捲入這打擊?要保持不受傷害,保持毫髮無損;
Why then do you fall into the very charge? Why do you involve yourself in the blow? Remain unharmed, remain unwounded;
51:146
do not, in wishing to strike another, entangle yourself in the evil.
51:147
For is not one tumult of the soul enough for us—that which is stirred though nothing stirs it?
51:148
諸如那些荒謬的慾望、憂愁、灰心喪志,以及一切這類的事;
such as absurd desires, griefs, despondencies, and all things of this kind;
51:149
yet we heap up others besides.
51:150
'And how is it possible,' one asks, 'to bear being insulted?' And how is it not possible, tell me? Is a wound produced in us by words? Are there bruises upon our bodies? What harm, then, comes to us? So that, if we are willing, we are able to bear it.
51:151
讓我們給自己立一條律:不要傷痛,我們就能忍受;
Let us set ourselves a law not to grieve, and we shall bear it;
51:152
let us say to ourselves:
51:153
這不是出於仇恨,乃是出於軟弱;
It is not from enmity, it is from weakness;
51:154
因為這實在確是出於軟弱;
for indeed it truly is from weakness;
51:155
for that it is not from enmity nor from malice—that man too wished to restrain himself, though he had been wronged ten thousand times.
51:156
If we consider only this—that it is from weakness—we shall bear it, and we shall pardon that man, and we ourselves shall try not to fall into the same fault.
51:157
For I ask all who are present:
51:158
Can you, if you are willing, so practice this wisdom as to bear those who insult you? For my part, I think you can.
51:159
So then he insulted you unwillingly and against his will, but under compulsion of his passion.
51:160
Do you not see those who are possessed by demons? Just as such a one endures this not so much from enmity as from weakness,
51:161
照樣,我們被激動,與其說是因著凌辱的本質,不如說是出於我們自己;
so we too are moved not so much by the nature of the insults as by our own selves;
51:162
不然,為何當瘋子加以同樣的凌辱時,我們卻能忍受?再者,若凌辱我們的是朋友,甚至是比我們更尊貴的人,在那種情形下我們也能忍受;
since how is it that we bear the same insults when madmen offer them? Again, if those who insult us are friends, or even greater than we, in that case too we bear it;
51:163
how then is it not absurd that, while there are these three—friends, madmen, and those greater than we—we bear it, but from equals or even inferiors we do not bear it? Many times I have said:
51:164
這事不過是一時的衝動與突然的挾持;
The thing is a mere impulse and a sudden seizure;
51:165
let us endure a little, and we have accomplished the whole.
51:166
The greater the insult he offers, the weaker he is.
51:167
你知道甚麼時候才該傷痛嗎?就是當我們凌辱了那人,而他卻默然不語的時候;
Do you know when you ought to grieve? When, after we have insulted him, that man keeps silent;
51:168
因為那時他是剛強的,我們卻是軟弱的;
for then he is strong, but we are weak;
51:169
但若相反的事發生,我們甚至該當歡喜;
but if the contrary happens, we ought even to rejoice;
51:170
你已被加冠,已被宣告為勝利者;
you have been crowned, you have been proclaimed victor;
51:171
你未曾被拖入競技場,也未曾忍受烈日、日光和塵土的煎熬,也未曾扭打、與人交手,只不過是憑著意願,坐著或站著,就領受了那大冠冕;
not having been dragged down into a contest, nor having endured the oppression of the sun and its rays and the dust, nor having grappled and given holds, but merely by willing it, and while sitting or standing still, you have received the great crown;
51:172
而且不僅僅是大冠冕,乃是遠比他們的更大的冠冕;
and not simply a great one, but one far greater than theirs;
51:173
for it is not the same thing to throw an adversary in a contest and to prevail over the darts of anger.
51:174
你未曾與人交手就已得勝,你已擊倒了你裡面的情慾,你已宰殺了那被激動的野獸,你已如同一位極善的牧人,勒住了那狂暴的怒火;
You have conquered without even giving a hold, you have cast down the passion within you, you have slain the beast when it was aroused, and you have bridled the raging fury, like some excellent herdsman;
51:175
the battle was to have been a civil one, the war a war among one's own.
51:176
因為正如那些安營在城牆前、從外面圍攻的人,使城內的人陷入內戰,然後才得以取勝;
For just as those who sit down before a wall and besiege it from without entangle the defenders in civil wars, and then prevail;
51:177
照樣,那凌辱人的,除非激起我們裡面的情慾,就不能得勝;
so also he who insults, unless he rouses the passion within us, will not be able to prevail;
51:178
unless we ourselves set ourselves on fire, that man has no strength at all.
51:179
The spark of anger is in us that it may be kindled at the fitting moment—not against ourselves, nor that it may entangle us in ten thousand evils.
51:180
Do you not see how fire in houses is kept apart, and not scattered everywhere—neither in the hay, nor among the garments, nor anywhere carelessly—so that it may not blaze up when the wind blows?
51:181
而且即使一個婢女拿著油燈,即使廚子生火,也有許多的叮囑:不要在風口這樣做,不要靠近木板,也不要在夜間如此行;
But even if a maidservant carries a lamp, even if the cook lights a fire, there is much caution: not to do this near the wind, nor close to a plank, nor at night;
51:182
反倒當夜幕降臨,我們就把它熄滅安歇,惟恐某時我們正睡著、又無人守護,它會燃起來,把我們眾人都燒盡。這事在怒氣上也當如此行;
but when night overtakes us, we have put it to rest, fearing lest at some time, while we are sleeping and no one is there to help, it might be kindled and set fire to us all. Let this be done also with regard to wrath;
51:183
let it not be scattered everywhere among our thoughts, but kept in some depth of the mind, so that the wind that comes from the words of the adversary may not easily reach it, but that it may receive the wind from us, who know how to stir it in due measure and safely.
51:184
它若從外面領受那風,就不曉得分寸,反倒要把一切都燒著;
If it receives the wind from without, it knows no measure, but will set everything ablaze;
51:185
often, even while we sleep, this wind will fall upon it and burn everything down.
51:186
所以,讓它對我們而言只是用來點燃亮光;
Let it therefore be for us only to kindle a light;
51:187
因為怒氣若合宜地興起,便點燃亮光;
for wrath kindles a light when it arises fittingly;
51:188
and let us have torches against those who wrong others, against the devil.
51:189
不要讓那火花到處擺放,也不要讓它四散拋擲,乃要把它保存在灰燼之中;
Let the spark not lie everywhere, nor be flung about, but let us keep it in ashes;
51:190
let us lull it to rest among humble thoughts.
51:191
我們並非時常需要它,惟有當某事必須加工、使之柔軟的時候才需要;
We do not always need it, but only when something must be worked and made pliable;
51:192
when a hardness must be softened, when the soul must be brought to self-condemnation.
51:193
How many dreadful things have fits of wrath and anger wrought!
51:194
而可悲的是這事:當我們爭鬧起來,就不再是自己作主重歸和好,反倒要等候別人;
And what is grievous is this: when we have risen up in strife, we are no longer masters of coming together again, but we wait for others;
51:195
each is ashamed and blushes to go back and reconcile the other.
51:196
看哪,一個人不以決裂、分裂為恥,反倒作了這惡的始作俑者;
See, one is not ashamed to fall out and be torn apart, but becomes the author of the evil;
51:197
然而他卻以前去縫合那撕裂之處為恥;
yet he is ashamed to approach and to sew up what has been torn;
51:198
and the same thing happens as if someone did not hesitate to cut off a limb, but were ashamed to join it together again.
51:199
What do you say, O man? You have done great wrong, and you yourself became the cause of the fight? Then it would be right for you to be the first to go and be reconciled, seeing that you yourself supplied the cause.
51:200
「但是他們冤枉了我,那人才是罪魁。」那麼,正因這緣故——好使他們更加欽佩你,好使你在第一件事之外,在第二件事上也居首位——正如你不是這仇恨興起的緣由,照樣也不要作這仇恨進一步延長的緣由;
'But they wronged me, and that man is the cause.' Then for this very reason too—that they may admire you all the more, that in addition to the first you may hold the first place also in the second—as you were not the cause of the enmity's arising, so neither be the cause of the enmity's being stretched out further;
51:201
perhaps that man too, being conscious of ten thousand faults in himself, is ashamed and blushes.
51:202
「但是他已陷於絕望、失了理智?」那麼,你就更當毫不遲疑地奔向他;
'But he has become desperate?' In that case most of all do not hesitate to run to him;
51:203
for the passion in him is twofold, both desperation and anger.
51:204
你已道出了你該先去和好的正當理由——你這健全的人,這能夠看見的人;
You have stated the very reason why you ought to be the first to go—you, the one who is in health, the one who is able to see;
51:205
for that man is in darkness.
51:206
For such is the nature of wrath and arrogance.
51:207
But you, who are free from these and are in health, draw near, as the physician to the one who is sick.
51:208
Does any physician say, 'Because he is ill I will not go to him'? Nay, rather for this very reason they go all the more, whenever they see that the man was unable to come.
51:209
For those who are able to come they even care less about, as not being gravely ill; but for those who are bedridden, no longer so.
51:210
Or does it not seem to you that madness and rage are worse than sickness? Is not the one like a violent fever, and the other like a body inflamed and swollen? Consider how great a thing it is to have both fever and swelling.
51:211
For you are able, by the grace of God.
51:212
As with water, subdue the inflammation.
51:213
'What then,' he says, 'if he is puffed up all the more by this very thing?' That is nothing to do with you.
51:214
For you have done your own part; but let him reckon with himself.
51:215
Let not our conscience condemn us, as though this came to pass because we were lacking in any of the things we owed.
51:216
'Feed thine enemy,' he says.
51:217
'For in so doing thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head.'
51:218
And yet, even though this be so, He commands us to go and be reconciled and to do good, not that we may heap coals of fire, but that the other, knowing this, may be brought low, that he may tremble, that he may fear kindnesses more than the enmities of foes, and friendships more than plots against him.
51:219
For an enemy nursing his grudge does not so harm the one who hates him, as does the one who helps and does him good.
51:220
For by nursing his grudge, he harms both himself and the other.
51:221
But by doing good, he has heaped coals of fire upon his head.
51:222
'Ought we not then to do it,' he says, 'so that we may not heap up coals?' But do you wish in another way to heap coals upon your own head? For this too is what the nursing of a grudge does.
51:223
'But to extend it further?' By no means.
51:224
For it is not you who do this, but that other, the brutish one.
51:225
For if, while you do him good and honour him and are reconciled to him, he persists in keeping up his hatred, he has kindled the fire against himself; he himself has scorched his own head.
51:226
Do not become more loving to man than God is, lest you suffer countless dreadful things.
51:227
Or rather, not even if you wished could you do so, not even a little.
51:228
For how could you? 'As far as heaven is distant from the earth,' He says, 'so far are my counsels distant from your counsels.'
51:229
'If ye then,' He says, 'being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children, how much more shall your Father which is in heaven give unto you?' But these are mere excuses and pretexts.
51:230
Let us not then explain away the commandments of God with our clever reasonings.
51:231
'And how do we explain them away?' he says. He said:
51:232
'In doing this, thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head.'
51:233
'I fear my enemy, because he has greatly wronged me.'
51:234
Is that not what you say? But how did you come to have an enemy at all? You fear the one who wronged you, but you do not fear yourself? Would that you gave thought to yourself!
51:235
Or rather, even with such an aim, do it.
51:236
I do not say to you merely that you will heap coals of fire, but I say something yet greater still.
51:237
For all these things, says Paul, he speaks in order to call you forth, to dissolve the enmity by the hope of vengeance.
51:238
Since we are brutish, and would not otherwise endure to love our enemy unless we expected some vengeance, he gives us this morsel, as it were to a wild beast.
51:239
For to the apostles he does not say this, but what? 'That ye may become like unto your Father which is in heaven.'
51:240
And in any case it is impossible that one who does good and one who receives good should remain enemies.
51:241
你既在言語上談論高深的道理,為何在行為上連分寸也守不住呢?好罷——你不給他吃飯,唯恐把炭火堆在他頭上;
Why, philosophizing in words, do you not keep even measure in your deeds? Well and good—you do not feed him, lest you heap coals of fire upon him;
51:242
so then you are sparing him? so then you love him, and do it with such an aim? God knows whether you speak with such an aim.
51:243
And indeed, toward us you play the sophist and put forward your specious argument.
51:244
你為你的仇敵著想,唯恐他受懲罰嗎?那麼你已經澆熄了你的忿怒;
You take thought for your enemy and fear lest he be punished? Then you have quenched your anger;
51:245
for he who so loves as to overlook his own advantage for the sake of what benefits the other, has no enemy.
51:246
How long shall we trifle in matters that are no trifling matter, and admit of no excuse? Wherefore I exhort your Brotherhood, beloved of the Lord and God and our Saviour Jesus Christ, and I beg and beseech you, that cutting off these pretexts, we may not despise the laws of God, nor overlook His commandments, that we may be able to pass this present life in a manner well-pleasing to the Lord, and to obtain the good things that have been promised, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
