「Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred within him when he saw the city wholly given to idols.」
38:2
「Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the devout persons, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there.」
38:3
Observe how he meets with greater trials among the Jews than among the Greeks.
38:4
因為在雅典他並沒有遭受這樣的苦,事情不過發展到被人譏笑而已,儘管他確實說服了一些人;
For at Athens he suffered nothing of that sort, but the whole affair went no further than laughter—and yet he did persuade some;
38:5
但在猶太人中間卻有許多可怕的事;
but among the Jews there were many dreadful things;
38:6
so much more had they been made warlike against him.
38:7
「Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was stirred within him when he saw the city wholly given to idols.」
38:8
For nowhere else was it possible to see so many idols.
38:9
「Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the devout persons, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there.」
38:10
Observe: again he reasons with the Jews, stopping the mouths on every side of those who alleged that he had abandoned them because he had turned to the Gentiles.
38:11
It is marvelous how the philosophers did not at once mock him with insults when he spoke thus, nor spring away from the preaching, saying:
38:12
and this for another reason too—because they did not understand nor comprehend anything of what was said.
38:13
For how could they—seeing some of them called God a body, and others said that blessedness was pleasure? 「Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans and of the Stoics encountered him; and some said, 'What would this babbler say?' Others said,」
38:14
「'He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign deities'」—
38:15
because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.
38:16
For indeed they supposed the Resurrection (Anastasis) to be some goddess, being accustomed also to worship female deities.
38:17
「And they took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying:」
38:18
「'May we know what this new doctrine is which is spoken by you? For you bring certain strange things to our ears;」
38:19
「therefore we wish to know what these things may mean.'」
38:20
They led him to the Areopagus, not that they might learn, but that they might punish him—the place where
38:21
Observe, then, how both in hope of learning and at every turn they bring against him the charge of innovation.
38:22
That city of theirs was a city of talkers.
38:23
「For all the Athenians and the foreigners sojourning there had leisure for nothing else than to tell or to hear some newer thing.」
38:24
「Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said:」
38:25
「'Men of Athens, in all things I perceive that you are very religious.」
38:26
「For as I passed by and beheld the objects of your worship, I found also an altar on which was inscribed:」
38:27
「'Whom therefore you worship in ignorance, Him I proclaim to you.'」
38:28
As if commending them, he seems to say nothing burdensome.
38:29
「I perceive that you are very religious,」 he says;
38:30
這是甚麼意思呢?雅典人歷代以來,甚至從境外接受了眾神——如雅典娜的廟、潘神,以及從別處來的別的神——他們惟恐還有另一位神是他們尚未認識、卻在別處受敬拜的,為求更加穩妥起見,便也為這位神立了一座壇;
What does this mean? The Athenians, since over long periods they had received gods even from beyond their borders—as the temple of Athena, Pan, and others from elsewhere—being afraid lest there should be yet another god not yet known to them but worshiped elsewhere, for the sake of greater security, as it were, set up an altar to this one also;
38:31
and since this God was not manifest, there was inscribed:
38:32
This One, then, Paul says is Christ Jesus, or rather, the God of all.
38:33
「Whom therefore you worship in ignorance,」 he says, 「Him I proclaim to you.」
38:34
Observe how he shows that they had already anticipated Him.
38:35
「I bring in nothing strange,」 he says, 「nothing new.」
38:36
This is what those men were saying up and down:
38:37
「What is this new doctrine spoken by you? For you bring certain strange things to our ears.」
38:38
At once, then, he overturns their supposition, and says:
38:39
「God who made the world and all things in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth,」
38:40
Then, lest they should suppose Him to be one of the many, he next corrects this by adding:
38:41
「He does not dwell in temples made with hands, nor is He served by human hands, as though He needed anything.」
38:42
Do you see how little by little he introduces the true philosophy? How he derides the Greek error? 「Since He gives life and breath and all things;」
38:43
「and He made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth.」
38:44
See, then, whether these things cannot also be spoken concerning the Son.
38:45
「Being Lord,」 he says, 「of heaven and earth,」—the very things which they supposed to be gods.
38:46
And he made plain both the creation and mankind.
38:47
「Having determined the times appointed beforehand and the boundaries of their dwelling, that they should seek God, if perhaps they might grope after Him and find Him, though indeed He is not far from each one of us.」
38:48
「For in Him we live and move and have our being, as also certain of your own poets have said:」
38:49
This the poet Aratus said.
38:50
Observe how he furnishes his proofs both from the things done by them and from the things that have been said.
38:51
「Being then the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine is like gold or silver or stone, an image graven by the art and imagination of man.」
38:52
And indeed for this very reason, he says, we ought (to think rightly).
38:53
for surely we ourselves are not like (these images), nor are our souls.
38:54
Why in the world did he not at once take his stand upon philosophy and say:
38:55
God is by nature incorporeal, invisible, and without form? Because for the time being it seemed superfluous to say these things to men who had not yet learned that there is one only God.
38:56
For this reason, leaving those things unsaid, he takes his stand upon the matter in question, and says:
38:57
「These times of ignorance, therefore, God overlooked; but now He commands all men everywhere to repent, because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness, by a man whom He has ordained, having given assurance to all by raising Him from the dead.」
38:58
Observe: having shaken their mind by saying, 「He has appointed a day,」 and having struck them with fear, then opportunely he adds this: 「having raised Him from the dead.」
38:59
But let us look at the words said, taking them from the beginning.
38:60
「Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit,」 it says, 「was stirred within him.」
38:61
The being 「stirred」 (paroxysmos) here signifies neither anger nor indignation, but a rousing up and zeal, just as also elsewhere:
38:62
「There arose,」 it says, 「a sharp contention (paroxysmos) between them.」
38:63
But observe how it is providentially arranged that even against his will he should remain there, waiting for those men.
38:64
那麼「他被激動」是甚麼意思呢?就是「他被激發、奮起」;
What then is 「He was stirred」? It stands for 「He was roused up」;
38:65
the gift of grace is far removed from indignation.
38:66
「Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews,」 it says, 「and with the devout persons.」
38:67
Observe again how he reasons with the Jews.
38:68
By 「the devout」 he means the proselytes.
38:69
For the Jews were scattered everywhere from the time of Christ's coming—partly because that law was being dissolved, and partly as they taught men true religion.
38:70
But those men gained nothing thereby, save only that they became witnesses to their own calamities.
38:71
「And certain of the Epicurean and Stoic philosophers,」 it says, 「encountered him.」
38:72
The Athenians no longer governed themselves by their own laws, since they had by then fallen under the Romans.
38:73
And whence did these men wish to dispute with him? Because they saw others also conversing with him, and that the man was held in repute.
38:74
And observe, at once they speak insolently:
38:75
「For the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit.」
38:76
「He seemeth,」 they say, 「to be a proclaimer of strange demons」;
38:77
因為他們把自己的眾神稱作「鬼神」;
for they called their gods 「demons」;
38:78
for the cities were full of idols.
38:79
「And they took hold of him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying...」
38:80
Why did they drag him to the Areopagus? To strike terror into him, in the place where they tried cases of murder.
38:81
「May we know what this new teaching is which is spoken by thee? For thou bringest certain strange things to our ears.」
38:82
「Now all the Athenians and the strangers sojourning there had leisure for nothing else but to tell or to hear some newer thing.」
38:83
Here this is signified: that although they were forever busied in this—in speaking and hearing—yet they reckoned those things to be strange which they had never heard before.
38:84
「And Paul, standing in the midst of the Areopagus, said...」
38:85
「Ye men of Athens, in all things I perceive that ye are somewhat too religious (superstitious).」
38:86
「For as I passed through and beheld the objects of your worship...」
38:87
He did not say 「the demons」 outright, but he prepares the way for his discourse.
38:88
「I perceive that ye are too religious」—on account of the altar.
38:89
「The God,」 he says, 「that made the world and all things therein...」
38:90
He uttered a single utterance, by which he overthrew all the doctrines of the philosophers.
38:91
因為以彼古羅派說萬物都是自然而生,是由原子構成的;
For the Epicureans say that all things are self-originating and are composed of atoms;
38:92
斯多亞派則說萬物皆是物質,並終將被烈火焚化;
and the Stoics say that all is body and consumed by fire (conflagration);
38:93
but he calls the world, and all things therein, the work of God.
38:94
Seest thou the conciseness, and in that conciseness the clarity? And consider what were the things that seemed strange to them:
38:95
that God made the world.
38:96
Things which even some ordinary people now know—these the Athenians knew not, no, not even the wise among the Athenians.
38:97
For if He made it, plainly He is also Lord of it.
38:98
且看他所說神性的標記是什麼——就是那創造之能;
Observe what he says is the mark of Godhead—the creative power;
38:99
因為眾先知也處處這樣說,創造乃是屬乎神的;
for the prophets everywhere say this too, that to create belongs to God;
38:100
not as those men supposed, who made the Maker to be one, yet not Lord, and posited unoriginate matter.
38:101
Here then he spoke enigmatically what was his own, and established it, and demolishes what was theirs.
38:102
「He dwelleth not,」 he says, 「in temples made with hands.」
38:103
For He does dwell in temples, yet not in such as these, but in the human soul.
38:104
Observe, he did away with the bodily worship.
38:105
What then? Did He not dwell in the temple at Jerusalem? Nay indeed, but He wrought therein.
38:106
How then was He served by the hands of men among the Jews? Not by hands, but by the understanding; since He did not seek those things as though standing in need of them.
38:107
祂說:「我豈吃公牛的肉,喝山羊的血嗎?」隨後又說:「祂也不受人手的事奉,好像缺少什麼似的」;
「For shall I eat the flesh of bulls,」 He says, 「or drink the blood of goats?」 Then, having said, 「Neither is He served by the hands of men, as though needing anything」;
38:108
因為單單這一點——就是他所宣告的一無所需——尚且不足;
since this alone would not have sufficed—the being in need of nothing, which he declared;
38:109
因為這一點固然也是屬神的,但還須有另一件相隨;
for this too indeed is divine, but there must also be present something further;
38:110
he adds this: 「He Himself giveth to all life and breath, and all things.」
38:111
He shows two proofs of Godhead: that He Himself needs nothing, and that He provides all things to all.
38:112
Set beside this all that Plato philosophized concerning God, all that Epicurus did—and all is trifling nonsense compared with these things.
38:113
「Giving,」 he says, 「life and breath.」
38:114
Behold, he makes Him the Creator of the soul also, not its begetter.
38:115
See again how he demolishes the doctrine concerning matter: 「And He made,」 he says, 「of one blood every nation of men to dwell upon all the face of the earth.」
38:116
These teachings are better than those, and are a refutation both of the atoms and of matter.
38:117
Here he shows that neither is the soul of man a partial thing (a portion of the divine).
38:118
But what those men assert—this is not to be a Creator.
38:119
In saying that God is served by the hands of men, he hints that He is served by the understanding and the mind.
38:120
「This One,」 he says, 「is Lord of heaven and earth.」
38:121
Therefore it is not the partial demons.
38:122
「The God that made the world and all things therein.」
38:123
Having first shown how heaven came to be, he then declared that He dwells not in things made with hands, as if he said:
38:124
祂若是神,顯然萬物都是祂造的;
If He is God, plainly He made all things;
38:125
but if He made them not, He is not God.
38:126
「The gods that have not made the heaven and the earth,」 it says, 「let them perish.」
38:127
他引進遠比他們更為重大的道理(然而他尚未說到那些至大的真理;
He introduces doctrines far greater than theirs (and yet he had not yet spoken the great things;
38:128
but he was discoursing to them as to children)—the creation, the lordship, the self-sufficiency (that God needs nothing).
38:129
And in saying that He made every nation of men of one blood, he made known the Author of all good things.
38:130
有什麼能與這崇高相比呢?從一本造出這許多人,固然已是奇妙的;
What is equal to this sublimity? For it is marvelous indeed even to make so many out of one;
38:131
but that He Himself should hold them all together is still far more marvelous.
38:132
「For giving,」 he says, 「to all breath and life.」
38:133
「祂定準了他們預定的時期和所住的疆界,要叫他們尋求神,或者可以揣摩而得」,這是什麼意思呢?他說,並沒有人是被迫四處奔走去尋求神的;
What is the meaning of, 「Having determined appointed seasons, and the bounds of their habitation, that they should seek God, if haply they might feel after Him and find Him」? That no one, he says, was compelled to go about and seek God;
38:134
or if not this, then that He ordained that men should seek God.
38:135
But He did not ordain this for all time, but for 「appointed seasons.」
38:136
And he says this to show that not even now, when they sought, did they find Him, although He was so manifest to be found, as if He were some object being felt for in the midst.
38:137
因為諸天並非在此處有,在別處便沒有;
For neither was heaven here, and elsewhere not;
38:138
nor was it in this time, and in another not.
38:139
So that both at every season, and within every bound of habitation, it is possible to find Him.
38:140
In this way He so ordered that He should be sought, that men might be hindered neither by place nor by time.
38:141
And this very thing above all worked to their advantage, if only they were willing: that heaven is everywhere, and stands present at every time.
38:142
And indeed He is not far from any one of us, but is near to all.
38:143
He gave not only life and breath and all things;
38:144
but also, the crown of all, He brought us to the knowledge of Himself, granting us those things by which we are able to find and to comprehend Him.
38:145
Yet we were not willing to seek Him, though He was right before our feet.
38:146
'He is not far,' he says, 'from every one of us.'
38:147
He says that He is near to all who dwell in every part of the inhabited world.
38:148
What is greater than this? See how he also does away with the notion of a local, partial god.
38:149
Why do I say 'far'? He is so near that apart from Him we cannot even live.
38:150
For in Him we live and move and have our being.
38:151
By way of a bodily illustration he says something of this kind:
38:152
正如人不可能不覺察那彌漫各處的空氣,它離我們每一個人不遠,甚至就在我們裡面;
Just as it is impossible to be ignorant of the air that is poured out everywhere, and is not far from any one of us, but rather is even within us;
38:153
even so also is the Maker of all things.
38:154
See how he says that all things are His:
38:155
His providence, he says, and His holding all things together, our being from Him, our acting, our not perishing.
38:156
And he did not say 'Through Him,' but that which was nearer, 'In Him.'
38:157
那位詩人說「我們也是祂所生的」,所說的絕不能與此相提並論;
That poet said nothing equal to this when he said, 'For we are also His offspring';
38:158
for that poet spoke concerning Zeus, but Paul takes it as applying to the Creator, not saying that God is the same as that Zeus—God forbid—but fitting to God the things which are properly said of Him.
38:159
Since indeed he said that the altar was His, not that Zeus's whom they worshipped.
38:160
For certain things are indeed said and done toward this God, but the Greeks do not know that they are toward Him, but have conceived them as being toward another.
38:161
For tell me, concerning whom would 'To an Unknown God' be properly said—concerning the Creator, or concerning the demon? Clearly concerning the Creator, even though the one they did not know, while the other they did know.
38:162
Likewise also, the statement that He made all things would be properly fitted to the true God, rather than to Zeus, some abominable, contemptible, and deceiving man.
38:163
所以保羅並非像那詩人一樣說話(斷乎不是),即使他也說了「我們也是祂所生的」這句;
Thus Paul did not speak in the same way as that poet—God forbid—even in saying, 'For we are also His offspring';
38:164
因為他說我們是神的族類、神所生的;
for he said that we are the offspring of God;
38:165
就是說,是屬祂的、與祂至為親近的;
that is, His own, His nearest kin;
38:166
or, as one might put it, His neighbors and those who dwell close by Him.
38:167
For lest they should again say, 'You bring strange things to our ears' (for nothing is so contrary to men as this), he brings the poet into their midst.
38:168
你們不當以為神像金或銀,你們這可憎又極其可憎的人哪;
You ought not to think that the Deity is like gold or silver, O abominable and utterly abominable men;
38:169
but rather something more lowly. This we ought not
38:170
如此想的,他說,倒要想那超乎這一切之上的。那超乎其上的是甚麼呢?就是神;
to think, he says, but rather something above this. And what is that which is above this? God;
38:171
yet not even this (for this is a name of activity), but for the present, this.
38:172
雖然如此,我們並不說神像這樣的東西;
Nevertheless, we do not say that the Deity is like this;
38:173
for who could say so? See how he introduced the incorporeal nature.
38:174
For the mind, whenever it suspects a body, also conjectures spatial extension.
38:175
'Being therefore the offspring of God,' he says, 'we ought not to think that the Deity is like gold or silver or stone, graven by art and man's device.'
38:176
那麼他為何說這些話呢?原來他的話是對著眾人說的;
Why then does he say these things? But his discourse was addressed to the multitude;
38:177
for if we ourselves are not like those images as regards the soul, much more is God unlike them.
38:178
For the present he leads them away from that false supposition.
38:179
神不但不像人手藝所雕刻的,也不受任何別的人意所臆測;
And not only is the Deity unlike anything graven by art, but neither is it subject to any other human notion;
38:180
for either art or thought devised it.
38:181
所以,凡人的手藝或心思所想出來的,這就成了他們的神,甚至把神的本質安放在石頭裡;
Whatever, then, human art or thought devised—this they made their god, and the very essence of God was in a stone;
38:182
how then, if in Him we live, do we not find Him? The charge is twofold: both that they did not find Him, and that they found such things as these.
38:183
Nowhere is the reasoning mind by itself worthy of trust.
38:184
But since he shook their soul by showing them to be without excuse, see what he adds:
38:185
'The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now He commands all men everywhere to repent.'
38:186
What then? Is none of these punished? None of those who are willing to repent.
38:187
He speaks concerning these, not concerning those who have departed, but concerning those to whom He gives the command.
38:188
'He does not demand an account from you,' he says.
38:189
他並沒有說「祂放任不理」;
He did not say, 'He passed it over';
38:190
that is, He does not exact punishment as though you were worthy of punishment.
38:191
And he does not say, 'You did evil willingly,' but he showed this by the words above, when he said, 'to repent everywhere.'
38:192
Here he hints at the whole inhabited world.
38:193
See how he leads them away from the partial gods.
38:194
'Because He has appointed a day,' he says, 'on which He is about to judge the inhabited world in righteousness.'
38:195
Again he said 'the inhabited world,' thus calling men.
38:196
'By the Man whom He has ordained, having raised Him from the dead.'
38:197
See how again he made known the Passion, in mentioning the Resurrection.
38:198
審判為真,這從復活可以顯明;
And that the judgment is true is evident from the Resurrection;
38:199
and that He spoke all things in truth is evident from the fact that He rose again.
38:200
And that He also furnished to all this ground of faith—His rising from the dead—this too is henceforth evident.
38:201
這些話固然是對雅典人說的;
These things were indeed spoken to the Athenians;
38:202
but they would have their fitting occasion to be spoken to us also, namely, that all men everywhere must repent, because He has appointed a day on which He is about to judge the inhabited world.
38:203
See how he introduces Him both as Judge, and as one who provides for the world, loving to man, ready to forgive, powerful and wise, and, in a word, having all the attributes of the Creator.
38:204
The things spoken gave a proof that He was raised from the dead.
38:205
若基督沒有復活,我們就不受審判;
If Christ has not risen, we are not judged;
38:206
but if He has risen, we are assuredly judged.
38:207
'For to this end He also died, that He might be Lord both of the dead and of the living,' he says;
38:208
'For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive according to what he has done.'
38:209
所以,不要以為這些不過是空話;
Do not, then, suppose that these are mere words;
38:210
Behold, he has also introduced the doctrine concerning the resurrection of all things; for the world is not judged in any other way.
38:211
For the world is not otherwise brought to judgment.
38:212
And the saying, 'Having raised Him from the dead,' is spoken concerning the body; for this it is that both dies and falls.
38:213
For this it is that both was dead, and this that also fell.
38:214
Among the Greeks, just as the doctrines concerning creation, so also those concerning the judgment are rejected.
38:215
But these are the inventions of children and of drunken men.
38:216
But let us, who know these things accurately, do something profitable, and be earnest to be made close to Christ.
38:217
How long shall we be at enmity with Him? How long shall we bear ill-will toward Him? 'God forbid,' one says.
38:218
Why do you say these things? I would not have said them, were you not doing these very things.
38:219
But as it is, what profit is there in silence of words, when the deeds themselves cry out so loudly with all plainness? How then shall we love Him? I have said it ten thousand times ten thousand, and I will say it now also.
38:220
I think I have found one way, exceedingly great and marvelous.
38:221
That, together with reckoning up the things done in common by God, which are so many that no one can even number them,
38:222
and, giving Him thanks for all these things, let us all also call to mind the things that have been done for each one of us, and let us reckon them up day by day.
38:223
Since therefore these things have great power, let each one of us reckon with himself, and with all accuracy search out whether he ever fell into dangers and escaped the hands of his adversaries, and let him have the benefits of God recorded as in a book.
38:224
例如,倘若他曾在不合時的時辰出門上路,卻逃過了危險;
For instance, if he ever went out on a journey at an unseasonable hour, and escaped a danger;
38:225
倘若他曾遇見惡人,卻勝過了他們;
if he ever, falling in with wicked men, got the better of them;
38:226
倘若他曾患病,在眾人都絕望之時卻痊癒過來;
if he ever, having fallen into sickness, recovered when all had despaired;
38:227
for this has great power to make us close to God.
38:228
因為若是那末底改,當他所行的善事被王記念時,尚且藉此得著保護,以致重新得回那樣的尊榮;
For if that Mordecai, when the good deeds done by him came to the king's remembrance, thus had them for his protection, so as to come again to that splendor;
38:229
much more shall we, if we call these things to mind, and make an accurate examination of these two matters—what we have sinned against God, and what good He Himself has wrought toward us;
38:230
so shall we both be thankful, and shall give up all things freely.
38:231
但沒有一個人記念這些事中的任何一件;
But no one makes remembrance of any of these things;
38:232
but just as concerning sins we say that we are sinners, without examining them according to their kind, so also concerning the benefits of God—when we say, 'God has done us good,' we do not examine them according to their kind, we do not say where, and how many, and at what season.
38:233
But from this time forth let us practice much accuracy.
38:234
For if anyone is able to take up even the things of long ago, let him reckon them all up accurately, as one who shall find a great treasure.
38:235
This is useful to us also for the purpose of not despairing.
38:236
因為當我們看見祂曾多次保護我們,就不至絕望,也不至以為自己已被丟棄;
For when we see that He has often protected us, we shall not despair, nor deem ourselves to have been cast away;
38:237
but we shall receive of Him a great pledge of His care for us, whenever we consider that, though we have sinned, we are not punished, but even enjoy His protection.
38:238
Let me too tell something which I have heard from a certain person.
38:239
There was somewhere a boy, and it once happened that he was in the countryside with his mother, being not yet fifteen years old.
38:240
那時忽然遇著一陣惡劣的天氣,熱病就臨到他們二人身上;
Then, a harsh spell of weather having come on, a fever fell upon them both;
38:241
於是母親先趕著進了城;
then the mother made haste to go into the city first;
38:242
but the boy, though the physicians there bade him remain, and though the fever was burning him, began to gargle, forsooth playing the philosopher, thinking rather to quench the fire if he should take nothing at all.
38:243
Being then but a boy, out of untimely contentiousness he took nothing.
38:244
但當他進城之後,他舌頭的功能就癱瘓了,長時間不能言語,發不出清楚的音來;
But when he came into the city, the powers of his tongue were paralyzed, and he was speechless for a long time, uttering nothing articulate;
38:245
yet he could read, and went to teachers for a long time, but only in a simple and unintelligible manner.
38:246
於是他一切的指望都斷絕了,他的母親也滿懷憂傷;
All his hopes therefore were cut off, and his mother was full of grief;
38:247
and physicians devised many things, and many others many other remedies, but none availed, until the God who loves mankind healed the fetter of his tongue, and then he recovered, and He brought him back to his former eloquence and clearness of speech.
38:248
他的母親還講述說:當他還是極小的孩子時,鼻子上生了一種病,就是他們所稱的鼻息肉;
And his mother related of him also that, when he was a very little child, he had a disease about the nose, which they call a polypus;
38:249
and again the physicians had despaired, and the mother prayed that he might die, and the father cursed him (for he was still alive at that time), and again all was in perplexity.
38:250
But he, coughing straightway, by a sneeze thrust out that creature from his nostrils by the rush of his breath, and all the terrors were undone.
38:251
But when this had been quenched, a rheum, sharp and clammy, ever flowing down over his eyes, made his eye-discharges so copious and so thick as to become as a partition-wall before the pupil; and, dreadful to say, it threatened blindness, and all said that this would come to pass.
38:252
But from this too, by the grace of God, he was speedily delivered from the malady.
38:253
這些事乃是我所聽來的;
And these things indeed are what I heard;
38:254
but the things which I myself know, I will tell to you.
38:255
從前在我們城裡曾興起一場關於篡位者的疑懼(那時我還是個少年);
There was once stirred up a suspicion of usurpers in our city (and at that time I was still a lad);
38:256
and while the soldiers were encamped all around outside the city, perhaps in a guileless way they were searching for books of sorcery and magic.
38:257
And the man who had written the book, having flung it unfinished into a river, was caught, and being required to produce it, could not give it, but was led about the city.
38:258
But when, as the proofs pressed hard, he had paid the penalty, then I, wishing to go off to the place of witness, was coming back through the gardens along the river with a certain other person as well.
38:259
And that other, seeing the book floating on the surface, at first supposed it to be a piece of linen; but coming near, he perceived that it was a book, and going down, he took it up.
38:260
But I contended that the find should be held in common, and I laughed.
38:261
'But let us see,' says he, 'what in the world it also is.'
38:262
He unfolds part of the page, and finds magical characters written therein.
38:263
And it happened that at the same moment a soldier was passing by.
38:264
Then, taking it within his garment, he went off, and was fixed fast with fear.
38:265
For who indeed would have believed that we had taken and picked it up from the river, when at that time even those who were above suspicion were being seized? And we did not dare to throw it away, lest we should be seen, and to divide it up again was a like fear.
38:266
God, at all events, granted it, and we cast it away, and were at last delivered then from the dangers.
38:267
And I could tell ten thousand things, if I were minded to recount them all.
38:268
我說這些事乃是為你們的緣故,使凡有這類經歷的人——縱然不是這樣的事,卻有別樣的事——都能常常記念;
And these things I have spoken for your sakes, that if anyone have, though not such things, yet some others, he may remember them continually;
38:269
例如,倘若曾有一塊石頭飛來,眼看要落在你身上,卻沒有落在你身上,就當把這事永遠記念;
for instance, if a stone was ever hurled, about to come upon you, and yet came not upon you, keep this in everlasting remembrance;
38:270
these things work in us a great friendship toward God.
38:271
因為若是當我們記念那些救過我們的人,卻無力報答他們時,我們尚且極其扎心;
For if, when we call to mind the men who have saved us, we are exceedingly stung whenever we are not able to requite them;
38:272
this is useful in another matter also.
38:273
Whenever therefore we wish not to be distressed, let us say:
38:274
'If we have received good things at the hand of the Lord, shall we not endure the evil things?' And Paul for this reason told from what he had been delivered, that he might put them also in remembrance.
38:275
See how Jacob also had all these things in mind:
38:276
'The angel who delivers me from my youth.'
38:277
And let us consider not only that He delivered us, but also how, and in what circumstance.
38:278
See therefore how he too remembered the benefits in particular.
38:279
'With my staff,' he says, 'I passed over this Jordan.'
38:280
But the Jews are ever mindful even of the deeds done in their forefathers' days, forever recalling the things that befell them in Egypt.
38:281
那麼我們豈不更當記念自己的事,以及臨到我們身上的種種遭遇,就是我們多少次陷入欺凌與災禍之中;
Ought we not, then, far more to remember our own affairs and the things that have happened to us — how often we have fallen into insults and misfortunes;
38:282
and had not God stretched forth His hand over us, long ago we should have perished.
38:283
Considering all these things, and recounting them day by day, let us give perpetual thanks to God, and all together with one accord send up glory to Him, and let us not cease to glorify Him, that for our thankfulness we may receive an abundant recompense — by the grace and compassions of His only-begotten Son, with whom, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
