But when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard it, they tore their garments and sprang out into the crowd, crying out and saying: Men, why do you do these things? We also are men of like passions with you, bringing you good tidings, that you should turn from these vanities to the living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all things that are in them.
31:2
Observe how the apostles do everything with vehemence.
31:3
They tore their garments, they leaped, they cried out—all from a disposition of the soul, turning away in horror from what was happening, and making signs of mourning.
31:4
For it was mourning, truly inconsolable mourning, if indeed they were about to be reckoned as gods, and to introduce that idolatry which they had come to abolish.
31:5
And this too was a contrivance of the devil.
31:6
They do not keep quiet, but what do they say? We also, they say, are men of like passions with you.
31:7
Straightway, from the very outset, they overturned the evil.
31:8
They did not say simply, Men, but, Men like yourselves.
31:9
Then, lest they should seem to honor the gods, hear what they add:
31:10
Bringing you good tidings, that you should turn from these vanities to the living God, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all things that are in them.
31:11
Observe that nowhere do they mention the prophets, nor do they say why He who is the Maker of all things left the nations to govern themselves. 'Who in generations past suffered all the nations to walk in their own ways.'
31:12
That He suffered it, he says; but why He suffered it, he does not yet add.
31:13
For the present he keeps to what is pressing, nowhere setting forth the name of Christ.
31:14
And yet He did not leave Himself without witness, doing good from heaven, giving us rains and fruitful seasons, filling our hearts with food and gladness.
31:15
See how he does not wish to heighten the charge against them, but rather trains them to refer everything to God.
31:16
For they had learned that one ought not so much to be eager to say something worthy of God, as to say what is profitable for the hearers.
31:17
See how imperceptibly he brings in the accusation.
31:18
And indeed, if He did this, they ought to have been punished, seeing that they enjoyed so many good things and did not so much as recognize Him as their nourisher.
31:19
But he does not say it openly; rather he hints at it, saying, 'giving us rains from heaven.'
31:20
'From the fruit of their grain and wine and oil they were multiplied.'
31:21
And in many places, when discoursing on the creation, he sets these things forth in the midst.
31:22
And Jeremiah too speaks first of the creation, and then of the providence exercised through the rains.
31:23
So that it is from that source that he, being schooled, discourses.
31:24
'Filling us,' he says, 'with food and gladness.'
31:25
The nourishment is given with liberality, not merely for sufficiency, nor merely for need.
31:26
And even while saying these things, they scarcely restrained the crowds from sacrificing to them.
31:27
And for this above all they were admired.
31:28
Do you see that they stood their ground to this end, namely to overthrow that madness? 'But there came Jews from Antioch and Iconium, and having persuaded the crowds, and having stoned Paul, they dragged him outside the city, supposing him to be dead.'
31:29
Not only within their own cities, but even outside them they did these things, showing as much zeal to pull down the preaching as the apostles were pressing to establish it.
31:30
'And having persuaded the crowds,' he says, 'and having stoned Paul, they dragged him outside the city.'
31:31
Here is fulfilled the saying, 'My grace is sufficient for you.'
31:32
'For my power is made perfect in weakness.'
31:33
This is greater than raising up the lame man.
31:34
The heathen indeed accounted them as gods, but these men dragged him after persuading the crowds.
31:35
For it was not likely that all should admire them.
31:36
And observe: in the very city in which they were so admired, in that same city they suffer these dreadful things.
31:37
And this too profited those who beheld it.
31:38
And that it was also for this reason that he was permitted to suffer, hear him declaring this very thing and saying:
31:39
'Lest anyone should reckon of me above that which he sees me to be, or hears anything from me.'
31:40
'But when the disciples had gathered round about him, he rose up and entered into the city.'
31:41
Do you see his eagerness? Do you see his longing, seething and set aflame? Into the very city he entered again, so that it might be shown that if anywhere he even withdrew, it was because he desired to sow the word, and because there was no need to inflame their fury.
31:42
These things made them no less illustrious than the signs, and even more disposed them to rejoice.
31:43
Nowhere does he say that they returned rejoicing because they had wrought signs, but because they were counted worthy to be dishonored for His name.
31:44
For this too they had been taught by Christ, who said:
31:45
'Rejoice not that the demons are subject unto you.'
31:46
For this is the joy that is truly and unfeignedly such—to suffer something for Christ's sake.
31:47
Then they went over all the cities in which they had been in danger.
31:48
'And on the next day he went forth with Barnabas to Derbe; and when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and Iconium and Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, exhorting them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter into the kingdom of God.'
31:49
'Strengthening,' he says, 'the souls of the disciples.'
31:50
They foretold it, then, that they might not be caused to stumble.
31:51
這同樣的事仿佛是特意發生的,不僅藉著使徒,也藉著門徒;
And as it were on purpose the same thing happens, not only through the apostles, but also through the disciples;
31:52
that they might learn from the very outset both the power of the preaching, and that they too must suffer such things, and that they might stand nobly, not gaping merely after signs, but far more toward the trials.
31:53
For this reason he too used to say:
31:54
'Having the same conflict which you saw in me and heard of.'
31:55
逼迫接連著逼迫;
Persecutions succeeded persecutions;
31:56
everywhere wars, fightings, stonings.
31:57
What sort of exhortation is this? How did they persuade them, speaking at the very outset of tribulations? Then there is also another consolation.
31:58
'And when they had ordained for them elders in every church, and had prayed with fastings, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they had believed.'
31:59
Did you see the fervor of Paul? 'Having prayed,' he says, 'with fastings, they commended them to the Lord.'
31:60
Observe: the ordinations are accompanied with fastings.
31:61
Again fasting, the purifier of our souls.
31:62
'And when they had passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia;'
31:63
'and when they had spoken the word in Perga, they went down to Attalia.'
31:64
For in order that the minds of the disciples might not fall, seeing that those reputed to be gods suffered such things, they went in to them and discoursed.
31:65
First he goes out to Derbe, giving them room to breathe from their fury, and then again to Lystra and Iconium and Antioch—yielding to them while they were enraged, but pressing upon them once they had ceased.
31:66
Do you see that they ordered all things not by grace alone, but also by their own diligence? 'And thence they sailed to Antioch, whence they had been committed to the grace of God for the work which they fulfilled.'
31:67
Why do they come again to Antioch? That they might report the things which had come to pass there.
31:68
此外,藉此機會也有一件大事得著神的安排;
And besides, a great matter is also providentially arranged from this occasion;
31:69
for it was now necessary to preach to the nations with boldness.
31:70
They come, therefore, reporting these things, that they might have full knowledge.
31:71
And it is providentially arranged that just then those who forbade converse with the nations should come down, so that henceforth, having obtained much liberty from Jerusalem, they might go their way with boldness.
31:72
Or in another way too, it shows that their character was not self-willed.
31:73
因為他們前來,一面顯出他們的放膽,就是即使沒有那些人,他們也向列邦宣講了;一面也顯出他們的順服,就是把這事回報給那些人;
For they come, on the one hand displaying their boldness, in that even apart from those men they had preached to the nations, and on the other their obedience, in that they refer the matter back to them;
31:74
for they were not puffed up as though they had accomplished such great things.
31:75
'Whence they had been committed,' he says, 'to the grace of God.'
31:76
然而他知道那屬於聖靈的,也是屬於子的;
But he knows that what belongs to the Spirit belongs also to the Son;
31:77
for there is one authority, even as the nature both of the Son and of the Spirit is one.
31:78
'And when they had arrived, and had gathered the church together, they reported all that God had done with them, and how He had opened to the nations a door of faith.'
31:79
'And they abode there a long time with the disciples.'
31:80
for being a great city, it had need of teachers.
31:81
Let us then look once more at what has been said above.
31:82
By the very sight they struck them with awe, tearing their garments.
31:83
This too Joshua the son of Nun did over the defeat of the people.
31:84
所以你不要以為這事有損他們的身分,或有損他們的堅定;
Therefore do not think this unworthy of them, or beneath their steadfastness;
31:85
for in no other way could they have checked so great an impulse, in no other way could they have quenched the flame.
31:86
Whenever, then, some needful thing must be done, let us not shrink back either.
31:87
If, then, even after this they scarcely persuaded them, had they not acted thus, what would not have come to pass? For if they had not done so, they would somehow have been thought to be high-minded, and rather to be craving the honour.
31:88
And observe the speech, measured in its rebuke, and at once full of wonder and of reproof.
31:89
This above all restrained them, their saying, 'We also are men of like passions with you, bringing you good tidings, that you should turn from these vain things to God.'
31:90
'We are indeed men,' he says, 'but greater than these.'
31:91
Observe them not merely overturning error, but also teaching, and uttering nothing concerning things invisible.
31:92
'Who made,' he says, 'the heaven and the earth and the sea, and all things that are in them.'
31:93
He calls the years themselves as witnesses.
31:94
Oh, the madness of the Jews!
31:95
Against a populace that had so honoured the apostles, they dared
31:96
to come in and stone Paul.
31:97
And they dragged him outside the city, perhaps out of fear of that populace.
31:98
'And having prayed,' he says, 'with fastings, they commended them to the Lord.'
31:99
And they taught men to fast in temptations.
31:100
They did not tell all that they themselves had done, but all that God had done with them. It seems to me that they mean the temptations.
31:101
They did not come there merely, nor to take rest, but being led by the Spirit according to a divine ordering, so that the preaching to the Gentiles might be confirmed.
31:102
有人問:「他們為何不在居比路,也不在撒瑪利亞設立長老呢?」答曰:因為居比路臨近眾使徒,而此地臨近安提阿,那道在那裡已站穩了;
'And why,' someone asks, 'did they not appoint elders in Cyprus, nor in Samaria?' Because the former was near the apostles, while this was near Antioch, and the word prevailed there;
31:103
but here they needed much encouragement, and especially those from among the Gentiles, who had many things to be taught.
31:104
They came teaching that the elders had been rightly ordained by the Spirit.
31:105
他並不查問是否當向外邦人講道,乃是立刻就講;
He does not inquire whether one ought to speak to Gentiles, but straightway speaks;
31:106
'I conferred not with flesh and blood.'
31:107
Affliction is truly a great good, and belongs to a great soul, and is the achievement of a noble one.
31:108
在此之後有多少人信了主,卻無人發出如此的光輝?所以我們在凡事上都需要熱切、需要極大的火熱、需要一顆已擺列好面對死亡的靈魂;
How many believed after this, and yet none shone forth so brightly? Thus everywhere we need eagerness, much ardour, a soul arrayed for death;
31:109
for otherwise it is not possible to attain the kingdom, unless one be crucified.
31:110
For if in war it is not possible for one to be saved who lives in luxury and amasses wealth and trades and is slothful,
31:111
much more in this war.
31:112
Or do you not think there is now a war fiercer than all wars? 'For our wrestling is not,' he says, 'against blood and flesh.'
31:113
The enemy is present with us as we breakfast, and walk about, and bathe.
31:114
因為他不知有任何停戰的時候,惟有睡眠之時是例外;
For he knows no season of truce, save only that of sleep;
31:115
and often even then he wages war, both casting in unclean thoughts, and working things more licentious by means of dreams.
31:116
但我們卻好像他為之爭戰的乃是一件小事,既不儆醒,也不奮起,更不留意那與我們為敵之勢力的眾多;
But we, as though the matter for which he wages war were a small thing, are not vigilant, nor do we rouse ourselves, nor look to the multitude of the powers set against us;
31:117
我們不曾想到:這件事本身正是最大的災禍;
we do not consider that this very thing is the greatest misfortune;
31:118
but, encircled by so many wars, we live in luxury as though in peace.
31:119
Believe me, it is possible now to suffer things harder than what Paul suffered.
31:120
當日那些人用石頭打他;
Those men then pelted him with stones;
31:121
it is possible even now to be pelted with words harder than stones.
31:122
那麼我們當怎樣行呢?就當行他所行的;
What then must we do? The very thing that he did;
31:123
for he did not hate those who pelted him, but when they had dragged him he went again into the city, to do good to those who had so wronged him.
31:124
If you too endure the insolent, the harsh man, the one who has unjustly done these things to you, you also have been stoned.
31:125
For do not say, 'I have done no wrong.'
31:126
保羅究竟做錯了什麼,以致被石頭打呢?他傳揚神的國,領人脫離迷惑,帶人歸向神;
For what wrong had Paul done, that he should be stoned? He proclaimed the kingdom, he led men away from error, he brought them to God;
31:127
這些事本當得冠冕,本當受表揚頌讚,本當得千萬的福分,而不是石頭;
these things are worthy of crowns, these of public proclamation, these of a thousand blessings, not of stones;
31:128
yet nevertheless he suffered the contrary.
31:129
你也照樣常被人拖拉;
And you too they often drag;
31:130
but be not angry, rather proclaim the word through gentleness.
31:131
Has one insulted you? Be silent, and bless if you can, and thus you too have proclaimed the word, you have taught gentleness, you have taught meekness.
31:132
我認識許多人,他們不那麼因傷口而痛苦,反倒因言語所加的打擊而更覺痛苦;
I know many who are pained not so much by wounds, as by a blow inflicted through words;
31:133
for the one wound the body receives, but the other the soul.
31:134
But let us not be pained; or rather, being pained, let us endure.
31:135
Do you not see the boxers, who with heads gashed open and teeth clenched, bear their pains so calmly? But here there is no need to gnash the teeth, no need to bite.
31:136
你只要記念你的主,就立時把良藥敷在這記念之上了;
Call to mind your Master, and straightway you have laid the remedy upon the memory;
31:137
consider that you, the one struck, have conquered, while he, the one who struck, is defeated, and you have healed the whole matter by this.
31:138
這只在轉眼之間:你不被激動席捲,就立刻把一切都做得妥當了;
It is a matter of a moment: be not swept away, and straightway you have set all right;
31:139
be not moved, and you have quenched the whole.
31:140
為基督的緣故受些苦楚,乃是極大的安慰;
It is a great consolation to suffer something for Christ's sake;
31:141
you do not proclaim the word of faith only, but you proclaim the word of true wisdom.
31:142
'But the more he sees the gentleness,' one says, 'the more does he press his attack.'
31:143
Do you then grieve for this, that he rather increases your rewards for you? 'But he becomes good for nothing,' he says.
31:144
In another way he becomes good for nothing, if you take vengeance.
31:145
神若曉得人因不報復,那些不義之人就會變得無可救藥,祂就必不吩咐這樣的事,倒會說:「你要為自己伸冤」;
If God had known that through not avenging oneself the unjust would become good for nothing, He would not have enjoined this, but would have said, 'Avenge yourself';
31:146
but He knows that thus one is rather benefited.
31:147
You are not better than He who made us.
31:148
'I return the insult, that he may not become good for nothing.'
31:149
Do you then care for him more than He does? These are the words of passion and harshness and arrogance, and of setting up a counter-law against God.
31:150
For even if he were harmed, ought you not to obey? When God commands anything, let us not set up a counter-law of our own.
31:151
'A soft answer,' he says, 'turns away wrath.'
31:152
So then, it does this by yielding, not by opposing.
31:153
若這於你有益,也必於他有益;
If it profits you, it also profits him;
31:154
and if it harms you—you who are to set him right—then far more does it harm him.
31:155
'Physician, heal thyself.'
31:156
他惡言相向嗎?你倒要稱讚他;
Has he spoken evil? Do you praise;
31:157
他設謀害你嗎?你倒要施惠與他;
has he plotted against you? Do him good;
31:158
requite him with the opposite, if indeed you have any regard at all for his salvation, and do not wish to avenge your own passion.
31:159
'And yet,' one says, 'many a time, having enjoyed forbearance, a man has become worse.'
31:160
That is not owing to you, but to him.
31:161
Do you wish to learn what things God suffered? They razed His altars, they slew the prophets, and He bore it all.
31:162
他豈不能從高天降下雷霆嗎?然而,當他差遣了眾先知、他們卻將先知殺害之時,他就差遣了他的兒子;
Could He not have brought down a thunderbolt from on high? Nay, but when He had sent the prophets and they slew them, then He sent the Son;
31:163
當他們犯了更大的不敬時,他就施了更大的恩惠。你也是如此,若見一人變得更兇暴,你就更當退讓;
when they had committed the greater impiety, then He bestowed the greater benefit. And you also, if you see a man growing harsh, then yield the more;
31:164
for this madness needs the greater consolation.
31:165
他辱罵得越厲害,就越需要溫柔相待;
The more grievously he insults, the more gentleness he requires;
31:166
正如熱病發作猛烈之時,最需要順其勢而緩解之物;
just as a fever, when it blows fiercely, then most of all needs what yields to it;
31:167
又如野獸在最兇猛之時,我們眾人都躲避牠;
the wild beast, when it is most savage, then we all flee from it;
31:168
你不要以為這是一種尊敬;
do not think this to be a mark of honour;
31:169
難道我們躲避野獸就是尊敬牠嗎?我們閃避瘋狂之人,難道就是尊敬他們嗎?絕非如此;
since we honour the wild beast too—do we then honour madmen when we turn aside from them? By no means;
31:170
這乃是羞辱與凌辱;
this is dishonour and outrage;
31:171
or rather, not dishonour and outrage, but mercy and loving-kindness.
31:172
Do you not see the sailors, when the wind blows fiercely, lowering the sails, that the vessel may not sink? and the riders, when the horses carry off their rider, giving way with them and not pulling back, lest of itself the strength be spent? IV
31:173
忿怒乃是火,是需要柴薪的猛烈火焰;
Anger is a fire, it is a sharp flame that craves fuel;
31:174
do not supply nourishment to the fire, and you have quickly quenched the evil.
31:175
Anger has no strength in itself, unless there be another to feed it.
31:176
You have no excuse.
31:177
那人被狂亂所轄制,不知道自己在做甚麼;
That man is held fast by madness, and knows not what he does;
31:178
但你目睹了他,卻仍陷入同樣的過失,甚至沒有因他的鑑戒而清醒過來,這樣還有甚麼可寬恕的呢?若有人赴宴,在門廊看見某人酒醉、行為不堪,之後自己也照樣陷入同樣的醜態,這人在那人之後仍舊酒醉,豈不是更加不可饒恕嗎?此處也是如此;
but you, beholding him, when you fall into the same faults and are not even brought to your senses by his example, what pardon can there be? If a man at a banquet were to see someone in the porch drunk and behaving disgracefully, and then himself fell into the like, would he not, drunk after that man, be far more unpardonable? So too here;
31:179
我們不要以為說「不是我先動手」就算是推託之詞;
let us not think it an excuse to say, 'It was not I who began.'
31:180
這反倒定我們的罪,因為我們連看見了他也不曾清醒過來;
this tells against us, that we were not even brought to our senses by seeing him;
31:181
just as if one should say, 'It was not I who murdered first.'
31:182
For on this very account are you deserving of punishment, that not even upon seeing the example did you restrain yourself.
31:183
你若看見酒醉之人嘔吐、身子抽搐、幾乎脹裂、雙目突出、把桌子弄得污穢不堪、眾人都躲避他,之後你自己也陷入同樣的光景,豈不是更加可憎嗎?發怒的人也正是如此;
If you saw the drunkard vomiting, torn apart, bursting, his eyes strained, filling the table with filth, all men shunning him, and then you fell into the same, would you not be even more hateful? Such is the angry man too;
31:184
他比嘔吐者更甚:他脹起血管,燒紅雙目,撕裂五臟,吐出遠比那食物更污穢的言語,凡所說的全未經咀嚼、全未消化(因為怒氣不容如此);
more than the vomiter he distends his veins, inflames his eyes, tears apart his inward parts, and vomits forth words far filthier than that food, uttering everything unchewed, nothing digested (for wrath allows it not);
31:185
然而正如在那情形中,體液過多攪擾了胃腹,便將一切都傾吐出來;
but just as there an excess of humours, having troubled the stomach, casts everything out;
31:186
so also here an excess of heat, having troubled the soul, does not suffer it to keep back what it were good to keep silent, but utters things speakable and unspeakable, shaming not the hearers but himself.
31:187
As therefore we flee from those who vomit, so also from those who are angry.
31:188
Doing what? Let us cast dust upon their
31:189
vomit, keeping silent let us call the dogs, that they may devour the very things vomited up.
31:190
我知道你們聽了這話會覺得噁心;
I know that you feel nausea in hearing this;
31:191
but when you see these things happening, I want you to feel this very thing, and not to take pleasure in the matter.
31:192
The reviler is more unclean than the dog that returns to its own vomit.
31:193
因為他若吐了一次便止住,就不至於像那狗;
For if, having once vomited, he ceased, he would not be like that dog;
31:194
but if he vomits the same things again, it is plain that he has eaten the same things.
31:195
還有甚麼比這樣的人更可憎的呢?還有甚麼比那咀嚼此等食物的口更污穢的呢?況且那嘔吐乃是本性所為,這辱罵卻不然;
What then is more abominable than such a man? and what more unclean than that mouth which chews such food? And yet this is nature's work, but that is not;
31:196
or rather, both this and that are contrary to nature.
31:197
怎麼說呢?因為無故辱罵並非合乎本性,乃是違反本性的;
How so? For to revile without cause is not according to nature, but contrary to nature;
31:198
at any rate, he utters nothing as a man does, but some things as a wild beast, some as a madman.
31:199
As therefore the disease of the body is contrary to nature, so also is this.
31:200
至於它是違反本性的這一點,可見於此:他若長久停留在其中,就要漸漸衰亡;
And that it is contrary to nature—if he continue in it, he will perish little by little;
31:201
but continuing in that which is according to nature, he will not perish.
31:202
I would rather share a table with a man who feeds on filth than with one who utters such things.
31:203
Do you not see the swine chewing dung? So too are these men.
31:204
還有甚麼比辱罵者所說的話更惡臭的呢?他們一味竭力不說一句健全的話、一句潔淨的話,凡是可恥的、凡是醜陋的,他們就去做、也去說出來;
For what is more foul-smelling than the words which revilers utter? Their whole endeavour is to say nothing sound, nothing pure, but whatever is shameful, whatever is unseemly—this both to do and to utter;
31:205
and what is still more grievous, that while shaming themselves the more, they think they are shaming others.
31:206
For that they shame themselves is plain from this.
31:207
你不要向我提那些說謊的人;且假設有一名聲狼藉的娼妓,或有另一個從戲臺出身的人,讓這樣的人與某人爭吵起來;
Do not speak to me of those who tell lies; but suppose there be some notorious harlot, or another from the stage, and let this one pick a quarrel with someone;
31:208
接著讓這一個向那人拋出這些辱罵,那一個也照樣回敬;
then let the one hurl these reproaches at him, and the other in turn do likewise;
31:209
這二人中,哪一個被這些話辱得更甚呢?因為前者聽見的是他實有之事,後者聽見的卻是他所無之事;
which of the two is the more insulted by the words? For the former heard the things which really belonged to him, but the latter, the things which did not belong to him;
31:210
so that to the former there accrued nothing further in the way of shame, but to the latter a great addition of disgrace.
31:211
但再假設確有某些事實際做過了,而惟有那辱罵者知道;
But suppose again there be certain deeds actually done, and the insulter alone knows of them;
31:212
他先前對此保持緘默,如今卻把這醜事張揚出去;
then, having kept silent about it before, let him parade the outrage abroad;
31:213
and thus this man is the more insulted.
31:214
怎麼說呢?因他成了惡事的傳報者,得了一個不可信、無良心的名聲;
How? Having become a herald of wickedness, having gained the reputation of a faithless, unscrupulous conscience;
31:215
你必看見眾人立時控告他,並且到處說這樣的話;
and you will see all men forthwith accusing him, and everywhere saying such things;
31:216
有人會說:他既知情一樁凶殺,就本該把一切都傾吐出來;
for if indeed he was privy to a murder, one says, he ought to have poured out everything;
31:217
他們厭棄那人,彷彿他連人都不是,恨惡他,說他是兇暴無情的野獸;
and the one they turn away from as though he were not even a man, they hate him, they say he is a beast, savage and merciless;
31:218
but with this one they sympathize rather than with that one.
31:219
For we do not so hate those who have wounds, as those who force themselves to uncover and display them.
31:220
這人也是如此,他所辱的不僅是那一個人,也連自己、聽的人,以及人類共有的本性一同辱了;
So too this man has insulted not that one alone, but also himself and the hearers and the common nature of mankind;
31:221
He has struck the hearer, yet he has accomplished nothing good.
31:222
For this reason Paul says:
31:223
'If any word be good for edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear.'
31:224
Let us acquire a tongue full of good report, that we may be longed for and beloved.
31:225
But indeed wickedness has advanced to such a pitch that many now glory in the very things over which they ought to hide their faces in shame.
31:226
For the sort of thing that most people threaten is this:
31:227
'My tongue cannot bear it,' he says.
31:228
These are the words of a woman, of a drunken old crone, of one who behaves indecently, of the sort who are dragged about in the marketplace, of a pander.
31:229
Nothing is more shameful than these words, nothing more unmanly, nothing more womanish—to have one's strength in the tongue, to pride oneself greatly on reviling, like those in the processions, like the mimes and the parasites and the flatterers.
31:230
Those who take pride in this are swine rather than men.
31:231
你倒該把自己埋起來;即使有別人為你作了這樣的見證,你也該逃避這見證,視之如仇敵、如不夠男子氣概之事;
You ought rather to bury yourself; you ought, even if someone else bore this witness of you, to flee such testimony as hostile and unmanly;
31:232
but you have become a herald of insults.
31:233
Yet you will be able to do no harm to the one who is evilly spoken of.
31:234
Therefore I exhort you: considering how great the wickedness is, and that many even boast in it, let us come to our senses, let us set right those who are thus raving, let us do away with these gatherings out of the city, let us adorn our tongue, let us free it from all evil-speaking, that being cleansed from sins we may be able to draw down the good will from above, and to be counted worthy of the loving-kindness that comes from God, by the grace and mercies of His Only-begotten, with whom—
31:235
