'And the barbarians showed us no ordinary kindness.'
55:2
'For they kindled a fire and received us all, because of the rain that was falling and because of the cold.'
55:3
'And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks and laid them on the fire, a viper came out because of the heat and fastened on his hand.'
55:4
How the barbarians showed their kindness, he explains:
55:5
'For having kindled a fire,' he says, 'they received us all.'
55:6
Since there was no hope of safety from any other quarter, the storm being about to destroy them, they kindle the fire.
55:7
隨後保羅拾起柴來,放在火上;
Then Paul, taking sticks, laid them upon the fire;
55:8
and making this clear, he adds, saying:
55:9
'And when Paul had gathered a bundle of sticks.'
55:10
你看他行事,卻絕不無故行神蹟,總是出於實際的需要;
Observe him acting, yet nowhere working wonders merely for their own sake, but out of necessity;
55:11
for in the storm too he prophesied when there was cause, and not without reason, and here again he gathers sticks and lays them on the fire.
55:12
Observe him doing nothing puffed up or superfluous, but only so that they might be saved and enjoy some warmth.
55:13
隨後有一條毒蛇因熱而出,咬住他的手;
Then a viper, coming out of the heat, fastens on his hand;
55:14
and that it fastened on him, he makes clear from what follows, saying:
55:15
'And when the barbarians saw the creature hanging from his hand, they said to one another:'
55:16
'Surely this man is a murderer, whom, though he has been saved from the sea, Justice has not permitted to live.'
55:17
Well was this too permitted, that they might both see and say these things, so that when it should come to pass, the miracle might not be disbelieved.
55:18
Observe their natural judgment well-articulated even among barbarians, and how reverently they spoke to one another, not even condemning him rashly.
55:19
Thus these also first see, that they might marvel the more.
55:20
'So he, having shaken off the creature into the fire, suffered no harm;'
55:21
'but they expected that he would swell up or suddenly fall down dead.'
55:22
'But when they had waited a long time and saw nothing untoward happen to him, they changed their minds and said that he was a god.'
55:23
Those who supposed that he would swell up—that is, burst asunder—these, seeing that he suffered no harm, say that he is a god.
55:24
Here again is another excess of honor on their part, just as with the crowds in Lycaonia.
55:25
'Now in the region about that place were lands belonging to the chief man of the island, named Publius,'
55:26
'who received us and for three days entertained us hospitably.'
55:27
Behold again another hospitable man, Publius, both rich and most well-provided.
55:28
This man, though he had seen nothing, but out of their misfortune alone taking pity on them, received them and cared for them.
55:29
'And it came to pass that the father of Publius lay sick, afflicted with fevers and dysentery;'
55:30
'to whom Paul went in, and having prayed and laid his hands on him, healed him.'
55:31
所以他配得這善待;
So he was worthy to be well treated;
55:32
wherefore, repaying him a recompense for his reception, Paul healed him.
55:33
'And when this had happened, the rest also who had diseases in the island came and were healed;'
55:34
'and they honored us with many honors, and when we set sail they laid on us the things we needed.'
55:35
They gave to those setting sail the things needed, and to the others as well.
55:36
你看,他們即便脫離了風暴,也並不因此疏忽,反倒為他的緣故使那接待格外慷慨;
Observe them not remaining neglectful even after being delivered from the storm, but making the reception generous on his account;
55:37
for three months they were all fed there.
55:38
And that they stayed so long a time, hear how, explaining this, he adds:
55:39
'And after three months we set sail in a ship of Alexandria that had wintered in the island, whose sign was the Twin Brothers (the Dioscuri).'
55:40
'And putting in at Syracuse, we stayed three days.'
55:41
'From there, going around, we arrived at Rhegium.'
55:42
過了一天,起了南風,第二天我們就到了部丟利;
And after one day, when a south wind sprang up, we came the second day to Puteoli;
55:43
where, having found brethren, we were entreated to remain with them seven days; and so we came toward Rome.
55:44
And so we came to Rome.
55:45
And from thence the brethren, when they heard the things concerning us, came out to meet us as far as Appii Forum and The Three Taverns.
55:46
Whom when Paul saw, he thanked God, and took courage.
55:47
Observe how all these things came to pass for Paul's sake, so that the prisoners, the soldiers, and the centurion believed.
55:48
For even if they had been of very stone, yet through him by whom they heard counsel given, and through him who foretold things, and through him who worked wonders, and through him by whose provision they were nourished, they would have conceived great things concerning him.
55:49
See how, whenever the judgment is upright and not forestalled by some passion, it straightway forms right judgments and verdicts well discerned.
55:50
那時傳道已經觸及了西西里;
Already had the preaching laid hold even of Sicily;
55:51
so also had it spread even in Puteoli, where too, having found certain brethren, they remain with them.
55:52
隨後又有別人因著風聞前來迎接他們;
Then others also, by report, come to meet them;
55:53
so great was the eagerness of the brethren, that Paul's being in bonds did not dismay them, but they went out to meet him.
55:54
But observe him for me, that he too experienced something human.
55:55
For «he took courage,» it says, «when he saw the brethren.»
55:56
And yet, having wrought so many signs, nevertheless he received an addition of strength even from the sight of them.
55:57
From this we learn that he was both comforted after a human manner, and the contrary.
55:58
«And when we came to Rome, Paul was permitted to abide by himself with the soldier that kept him.»
55:59
Dost thou see? It was conceded to him to abide by himself.
55:60
這也是他大受敬重的一個不小的憑據;
This too is no small proof that he was greatly admired;
55:61
for indeed they did not number him with the rest.
55:62
«And it came to pass, that after three days he called together those who were the chief of the Jews.»
55:63
After three days he called the chief of the Jews, so that their hearing might not be forestalled.
55:64
And what had he in common with those men? For surely they were not about to accuse him.
55:65
Yet nevertheless he took no thought for this, but rather to teach this and that the things spoken might not get the start of them.
55:66
如此,猶太人雖然看見了那麼多的奇事,卻逼迫、驅逐他們;
The Jews, then, though they beheld so many wonders, persecuted and drove them out;
55:67
but the barbarians, though they had beheld nothing, from the mere calamity alone were humane.
55:68
«Doubtless,» says the text, «this man is a murderer.»
55:69
他們並不是隨口斷定,而是說「必是」;
They do not declare it simply, but «doubtless,» they say;
55:70
that is, «as far as one can see.»
55:71
«And Justice,» it says, «hath not suffered him to live.»
55:72
So then they held the doctrine of providence too, and these barbarians happened to be far more philosophical than the philosophers.
55:73
因為那些哲學家不容月下之物得享天命的護理;
For those men allow not the things beneath the moon to enjoy providence;
55:74
but these deem that God is present everywhere, and that, even though one escape many things, he shall not escape unto the end.
55:75
你且看,他們並非立刻攻擊他,而是暫且因著這場災難心存敬畏;
And observe how they do not attack him outright, but for the present feel reverence because of the calamity;
55:76
他們也不張揚宣布,只是彼此相說;
nor do they make a public parade of it, but say one to another;
55:77
因為那捆鎖使他們如此揣測;
for the bonds taught them to suspect this;
55:78
那些說「不要善待監牢中的人」的,應當羞愧;
Let them be ashamed who say, «Do not do good to those in the prisons»;
55:79
讓我們在這些外邦蠻人面前感到羞愧;
let us be ashamed before the barbarians;
55:80
因為他們並不曉得那些人是誰,只是暫且從這場災難認出他們也是人;
for they knew not who those men were, but from the calamity for the present they learned only that they were men;
55:81
wherefore also they counted them worthy of kindness.
55:82
«But while they were long in expectation,» it says; that is, as they waited a long time for him to die.
55:83
But he shook off the beast into the fire, and showed his hand suffering nothing.
55:84
Seeing this, they were both amazed and marvelled.
55:85
但這神蹟並非立時發生,那些人反而過了一段時候,好叫這事不至於顯得像是幻象;
But the sign did not happen immediately; rather the men tarried for a time, so that it might not seem to be an illusion;
55:86
thus there was no deceit, there was no sudden trick.
55:87
«Now in the parts about that place there were lands belonging to the
55:88
chief man of the island, named Publius;»
55:89
who received us, and lodged us courteously.
55:90
For it was a mark of great courtesy to entertain two hundred and seventy souls.
55:91
你想想,好客待人的益處是何等的大;
Consider how great is the gain of hospitality;
55:92
not as of necessity, nor as unwilling, but reckoning it as gain, he entertained them three days.
55:93
因此他也理所當然地為這樣的好客得著了回報,而且遠比他所給的更大;
Wherefore he also fittingly receives a recompense for such hospitality, and one far greater than he gave;
55:94
因為他的父親得了醫治,那人本是被痢疾害得甚苦;
for his father is healed, who was sorely afflicted with dysentery;
55:95
不但是他,還有許多患病的人,他也一同施恩使他們得著同樣的醫治;
and not him only, but he counts many others who had infirmities worthy of the same;
55:96
whom also, in requital, they present with honours and provisions.
55:97
And making this plain, he subjoins:
55:98
«Who also honoured us with many honours, and when we departed, laded us with such things as were necessary.»
55:99
It was not that he received a wage—God forbid—
55:100
but that the thing written is fulfilled:
55:101
«The labourer is worthy of his food.»
55:102
那些如此接待他們的人,顯然也領受了所傳講的道;
And they who thus received them, it is plain that they also received the word of the preaching;
55:103
因為若不是他們大大地信了,並顯出果子來,他絕不會在三個月之久講論那麼多;
for he would not in three months have discoursed so much, had they not very greatly believed and shown forth fruits;
55:104
so that from this one may see a great proof of the multitude of those who believed.
55:105
«And we set sail,» it says, «in a ship of Alexandria which had wintered in the island, whose sign was Castor and Pollux.»
55:106
Perhaps this was inscribed upon it.
55:107
Observe them at one time tarrying, and again hastening.
55:108
«But to Paul it was permitted to abide by himself.»
55:109
Henceforth Paul was so venerable, that he was even allowed to be by himself.
55:110
for if even before this they treated him kindly, much more so now.
55:111
«And when a south wind sprang up,» it says, «we came the second day to Puteoli, where, having found brethren, we were entreated to remain with them seven days.»
55:112
And so we came to Rome.
55:113
And from there the brethren, when they heard the news concerning us, came out to meet us as far as the Forum of Appius and the Three Taverns.
55:114
For fearing the danger they came out, and this was enough to confirm the faith of those men.
55:115
Observe how nowhere in so long a voyage did they put in at a city, but at an island; and they passed the whole winter voyaging, while those who sailed with them—I mean the fellow-passengers—were being brought into order for the faith.
55:116
He was permitted, it says, to dwell by himself with the soldier who guarded him.
55:117
這是很合宜的,好叫他即便在那裡也不至於落入任何陰謀之中;
Very fittingly, so that not even there might it be possible for him to fall under any plot;
55:118
for it was no longer possible for any faction to rise up against him.
55:119
所以那看守與其說是在看管他,不如說是為要使任何不愉快的事都不至發生;
So that it was not that he was guarding him, but rather that nothing untoward should happen;
55:120
for it was no longer possible—with so great a city, and the emperor present, and an appeal pending—that anything should be done contrary to due course.
55:121
Thus always, through the very things that seem to be against us, all things come to pass on our behalf.
55:122
他召集了猶太人中的首領,向他們講論;
And having called together the chief men of the Jews, he discourses with them;
55:123
這些人與他爭辯,卻退去了,並且受了他的斥責,竟不敢說一句話;
and these, contradicting him, withdraw, and are rebuked by him, yet dare to say nothing;
55:124
for the matters concerning him were no longer entrusted to their authority.
55:125
For this is the marvel: that not through the things which seem to make for safety, but even through their opposites, all things come to pass on our behalf.
55:126
And that you may learn this, consider from the following.
55:127
Pharaoh commanded that the male infants be cast into the river.
55:128
Had the infants not been cast forth, had the command of Pharaoh not been issued, Moses would not have been saved, nor would he have been reared in the royal palace.
55:129
當他得蒙拯救的時候,他並沒有得著尊榮;
When he was being saved, he was not in honor;
55:130
when he was cast out, then he came to be in honor.
55:131
This God did, displaying His resourcefulness and His ingenuity.
55:132
The Israelite threatened him, saying:
55:133
'Do you wish to kill me?' And this too worked to his profit.
55:134
So it happened by a divine dispensation, that he might behold that vision in the wilderness, that the fitting time might be fulfilled, that he might practice philosophy in the desert, and live in safety.
55:135
在猶太人一切反對他的陰謀中,也都發生了同樣的事;
And in all the plots of the Jews against him the same thing occurs;
55:136
那時他反倒變得更加顯赫——正如在亞倫身上所發生的一樣;
then he is rendered more illustrious—as also in the case of Aaron;
55:137
他們起來反對他,卻使他更加顯赫;
they rose up against him, and made him more illustrious;
55:138
for from this his priestly vesture is embroidered in varied colors, and the mitre is set upon him, and the rest of the adornment of his robe, so that the ordination might be beyond dispute, and that thereafter he might be held in wonder because of the plates of brass.
55:139
這段歷史你們必定知道;
You surely know the history;
55:140
wherefore I also pass over the narrative.
55:141
If you please, let us go over the same things again from the beginning.
55:142
該隱殺了他的兄弟,但藉此他反倒使兄弟得了益處;
Cain slew his brother, but by this he rather benefited him;
55:143
'The voice of your brother's blood cries out to Me;'
55:144
and again elsewhere it says, 'To the blood that speaks better things than that of Abel.'
55:145
神救他脫離了將來的不確定,並且加增了他的賞賜;
He delivered him from the uncertainty of the future, and increased his reward;
55:146
we have all learned the love which God had toward him.
55:147
他既較早地遭遇了死亡,究竟受了什麼虧損呢?毫無虧損;
For what wrong did he suffer, in receiving death the sooner? None;
55:148
請告訴我,那些較晚死去的人得了什麼益處呢?毫無益處;
for tell me, what do those who die later gain? Nothing;
55:149
for happiness lies not in living many years or few, but in using life for what is needful.
55:150
那三個少年人被扔進火窯,卻藉此變得更加顯赫;
The three children were cast into the furnace, and by this were made more illustrious;
55:151
Daniel into the pit, and thereby he became more renowned.
55:152
你看,在各處試煉都生出極大的益處,即在今世尚且如此,何況在來世呢;
You see everywhere that trials bring forth great goods even here, much more there;
55:153
然而在惡事上所發生的,卻好像一個人拿著一根蘆葦去對抗烈火一樣;
but in the case of wickedness the same thing happens as if a man having a reed should set himself in array against fire;
55:154
for such a one seems indeed to strike the fire, but only makes it brighter, and consumes himself.
55:155
因為惡反倒成了美德的養料,並成了叫美德發光的因由;
For wickedness becomes nourishment and an occasion of brightness for virtue;
55:156
for when God uses injustice for what is needful, our affairs shine forth the more.
55:157
Again, when the devil works any such thing, he makes those who endure more illustrious.
55:158
有人說:「那麼,在亞當身上為何沒有發生這事,反倒使他更受羞辱呢?」誠然,即使在他的事上,神也將這事用於當用之處;
'What then,' one says, 'did this not happen in the case of Adam, but rather he became more dishonored?' Assuredly in his case too God used it for what was needful;
55:159
然而他若受了什麼損害,那是他自己害了自己;
but if he suffered anything, he wronged himself;
55:160
for the things done to us by others become to us the causes of great goods, but the things done by ourselves no longer do so.
55:161
因為既然我們被別人虧負時就憂傷,被自己虧負時卻不憂傷,神便顯明:那被別人不義相待的人是蒙嘉許的,而那害自己的人卻是受了虧損的;
For since when we are wronged by others we grieve, but not when wronged by ourselves, God shows that he who suffers unjustly at another's hand is well approved, whereas he who wrongs himself is harmed;
55:162
這是很合宜的,好叫我們對前一種能勇敢地承受,對後一種卻不再如此;
and very fittingly, that the one we may bear nobly, but the other no longer;
55:163
besides, in that case the whole thing came about through Adam himself.
55:164
你為何要聽從那婦人呢?她既給了相反的勸告,你為何不加以拒絕呢?你完全是罪魁;因為若這全是魔鬼所為,照這道理,凡受試探的人就都必滅亡了;
For why did you obey the woman? Why, when she counseled the contrary, did you not repulse her? You are altogether the cause; since, if it were the devil's doing, on this reckoning all who are tempted would have to perish;
55:165
but if they do not perish, the fault lies with us.
55:166
有人說:「但凡受試探的人都應當得勝才是;或者,若過錯在於我們,那麼人豈不是即便沒有魔鬼也照樣滅亡嗎?」這事的確也發生;
'But,' one says, 'all who are tempted ought to succeed; or, if the fault lies with us, ought men to perish even apart from the devil?' This indeed does happen;
55:167
因為事實上,許多人即便沒有魔鬼也照樣滅亡;
for in fact many perish even apart from the devil;
55:168
因為並非一切都是他所策動的,倒有許多事單單出於我們自己的懶惰;
for he does not contrive all things, but many things come about from our own sloth alone;
55:169
and if in some case he too is a cause, it is because we ourselves furnish the beginning.
55:170
For tell me, when did the devil have power over Judas? When Satan entered into him, it says.
55:171
Because he was a thief, and used to carry off what was put in.
55:172
他自己給了魔鬼寬闊的入口;
He himself gave him ample room for entrance;
55:173
so that it is not the devil who implants the beginning, but we who receive him and invite him in.
55:174
'But if he did not exist,' one says, 'the terrible things would not have grown so great.'
55:175
然而那樣一來,我們所受的刑罰就毫無可推諉的餘地了;
But then our punishment would have been without excuse;
55:176
for now, beloved, the matters of our punishment are milder for us; but if we wrought the terrible deeds through ourselves, the retribution would be unbearable.
55:177
For tell me, if these sins which Adam committed he had committed without any counsel, who would have snatched him from the dangers?
55:178
Whence do you tell me this? For one so lax and slothful and ready for folly as to receive such counsel would much more have done this even without it.
55:179
What manner of devil cast Joseph's brothers into envy? If then we are watchful, beloved, the devil becomes to us even a cause of good repute.
55:180
For what harm did all that machination of his do to Job? 'Do not say this,' one objects, 'but it is the weak who is harmed.'
55:181
But the weak, even if there were no devil, is harmed.
55:182
'But he sins the more grievously,' one may say, 'when it is done with the devil's active help.'
55:183
On the contrary, less; for when a man sins with that one's active help, he is punished more lightly.
55:184
For not all sins incur the same penalties.
55:185
只要我們儆醒,魔鬼就不能成為我們犯罪的緣由;
The devil is no cause of sin to us, if we are but watchful;
55:186
rather, he rouses us from sleep, he stirs us up all the more.
55:187
For tell me (let us for the present examine this): suppose there were no wild beasts, no inclemency of the seasons, no sickness, no griefs, no despondencies, nor any other such thing—
55:188
what would man not have become? A swine rather than a
55:189
a man, it seems to me, he would have become—stuffing his belly and getting drunk, and vexed by none of these things.
55:190
But as it is, cares and anxieties are a training-ground of wisdom and a school, and a discipline in the noblest instruction.
55:191
Let a man be reared in a palace, neither grieving, nor anxious, nor careworn, having no occasion for anger or for disappointment, but doing all that he desires, and succeeding in it, and having all men obedient to him—
55:192
will not such a one become more irrational than any wild beast? But as it is, the pressures of circumstance and of afflictions are like a whetstone that grinds and sharpens us.
55:193
For this reason the poor are for the most part more sensible than the rich, inasmuch as they are buffeted and drenched by many waves.
55:194
身體也是如此:閒懶不動的身體多病而令人不快,但操練、勞碌、辛苦的身體卻更為健美、更為康健;
For a body too, when idle and unmoved, is sickly and unpleasant, but when it is exercised and labours and toils, it is comelier and healthier;
55:195
and this same thing one may find to hold true of the soul.
55:196
鐵器也是這樣:擱置不用就生鏽敗壞,但一經使用便發出光亮;
Iron too, when it lies idle, rusts and is destroyed, but when it is worked it shines;
55:197
and so likewise the soul when it is set in motion.
55:198
And these very pressures of circumstance are the motion of the soul.
55:199
各樣技藝也會荒廢,若魂不受操練;
The arts too perish when the soul is not exercised;
55:200
魂受激動,乃是在諸事不都順遂之時;
and it is set in motion when things do not all go straight for it;
55:201
for it is stirred by adversities.
55:202
倘若沒有逆境,就沒有什麼能激動它了;
If there were no adverse things, there would be nothing to set it in motion;
55:203
for instance, if all things were already wrought well, art would find no room to exert itself.
55:204
So too [if all things were according to our mind, the soul would find no room to bestir itself]; if it were carried along in comfort on every side, it would grow distasteful.
55:205
Do you not see that we charge nurses too not to be forever carrying the little ones, lest they accustom them to it and make them frail? For this reason children brought up before their parents' eyes become weaker, since untimely and immoderate coddling ruins their health.
55:206
適度的憂愁是好的,掛慮也是好的,缺乏也是好的;
Good is a measured grief, good too is care, good too is want;
55:207
因為即使是逆境的事物,只要合宜,也使我們剛強;
for even things adverse make us strong when they are good;
55:208
for each of them, when it becomes excessive, destroys us: the one relaxes and slackens, the other rends asunder.
55:209
Do you not see that Christ leads even his own disciples in this same way? And if they had need of these things, much more do we.
55:210
我們既有這需要,就不要煩躁,反倒要在患難中歡喜;
And if we have need of them, let us not be vexed, but let us even rejoice in afflictions;
55:211
因為這些乃是對症治療我們創傷的良藥,有的苦,有的甜;
for these are remedies suited to our wounds, some bitter, some sweet;
55:212
but each of them, taken by itself alone, would be useless.
55:213
所以,我們要為這一切事向神獻上感謝;
Let us therefore give thanks to God for all these things;
55:214
for he does not permit them to happen simply, but for the profit of our souls.
55:215
Therefore, showing our gratitude, let us give thanks, let us glorify him, let us hold out nobly, reckoning their transitoriness, and stretching our mind toward the things to come, that we may both bear the present things lightly and be counted worthy to attain the good things to come, by the grace and lovingkindness of his Only-begotten, with whom to the Father together with the Holy Spirit be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
