So on the next day, when Agrippa and Bernice had come with great pomp, and had entered into the audience-hall,
53:2
together with the tribunes and the men of chief eminence in the city, and when Festus had given command, Paul was brought in.
53:3
See what sort of audience is gathered together for Paul!
53:4
他說:「城中的顯要人物」;
'To the men of chief eminence,' he says, 'of the city';
53:5
for the governor and the king, having gathered together all their bodyguards, thus present themselves.
53:6
與他們一同前來的,還有千夫長和城中的首要人物;
And with them the tribunes also and the leading men of the city were present;
53:7
for these he calls 'the men of chief eminence.'
53:8
又看,當保羅被帶進來時,他是如何被非斯都當眾宣告的;
And see how, when he was brought in, he is publicly proclaimed by Festus;
53:9
for Festus not only acquits him of the charges, but even speaks in his defence.
53:10
Saying what? 'King Agrippa, and all you men who are present here with us, you behold this man, concerning whom all the multitude of the Jews petitioned me, both at Jerusalem and here, crying out that he ought not to live any longer.
53:11
But I, having ascertained that he had done nothing worthy of death, and he himself having appealed to Augustus, I determined to send him.
53:12
論到他,我沒有確實的事可以奏明我主;
Concerning whom I have nothing certain to write to my lord;
53:13
wherefore I have brought him forth before you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, that after the examination has taken place, I may have something to write.'
53:14
'For it seems to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not also to signify the charges against him.'
53:15
Consider how he accuses those men, but acquits this one.
53:16
Oh, the abundance of his justifications!
53:17
那總督雖經過無數次的查究,仍找不到定他罪的把柄;
The governor, though countless examinations were made, cannot find how to condemn him;
53:18
but those men kept asserting that he was worthy of death.
53:19
'But I, having ascertained,' he says, 'that he had done nothing worthy of death.'
53:20
'Concerning whom I have nothing certain to write to my lord.'
53:21
And this too was a mark of Paul's purity—that the judge had nothing which he might say concerning him.
53:22
'Wherefore I have brought him forth,' he says, 'before you.'
53:23
'For it seems to me unreasonable, in sending a prisoner, not also to signify the charges against him.'
53:24
See into what great perplexities the Jews cast their own rulers.
53:25
What then does Agrippa do? Wishing to learn something upon these matters, he said to Paul:
53:26
'You are permitted to speak on your own behalf.'
53:27
Out of his great desire to hear him, the king permits him to speak.
53:28
於是保羅便放膽直言,並不奉承諂媚,反倒為此稱自己為有福的——因為他是在一位通曉這一切事的人面前申訴;
But Paul thereupon speaks with boldness, not flattering, but for this reason declaring himself blessed—because he is making his defence before one who knows all things concerning the matter;
53:29
and that it is for this reason, hear what indeed he sets forth, saying:
53:30
Then Paul made his defence, stretching forth his hand:
53:31
「亞基帕王啊,關於我被猶太人控告的一切事,我今日既要在你面前申訴,就自以為有福,尤其因為你熟悉猶太人一切的規矩和爭論;
'Concerning all the things of which I am accused by the Jews, King Agrippa, I count myself blessed that I am about to make my defence before you today, especially as you are acquainted with all the customs and questions among the Jews;
53:32
wherefore I beseech you to hear me patiently.'
53:33
然而,他良心若有虧欠,就理當在一位無所不知的人面前受審時心生懼怕;
And yet, if his conscience had accused him, he ought to have been afraid at being judged before one who knew all things;
53:34
但這正是清潔良心的標記——不但不推辭那確知已發生之事的審判官,反倒歡喜;
but it is the mark of a pure conscience not to shun a judge who knows accurately the things that have happened, but even to rejoice;
53:35
whence he also counts himself blessed, and says:
53:36
'I beseech you to hear me patiently.'
53:37
Since he is about to extend his discourse and to say something concerning himself, for this reason he first makes his appeal, and says:
53:38
'My manner of life then from my youth, which was from the beginning among my own nation at Jerusalem, all the Jews know, who had knowledge of me from the first, if they would testify, that according to the strictest sect of our religion I lived a Pharisee.'
53:39
How could I have been a factious rebel, being of such a character in my youth and attested by all? Then also, from the sect, comes the argument for the faith of which he spoke:
53:40
'According to the strictest sect of the religion I lived.'
53:41
And since again it was likely that some would say:
53:42
What then? If the sect is admirable, but you yourself are wicked? — see how he heals the lurking suspicion:
53:43
for he calls as witnesses all the Jews who knew his life and conduct.
53:44
'For all the Jews know,' he says, 'having had knowledge of me from the first, if they would testify.'
53:45
'And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made by God to our fathers,
53:46
就是神所賜的應許——我站著受審;
the promise from God — I stand being judged;
53:47
我們十二個支派晝夜切切地事奉神,盼望得著這應許;
unto which promise our twelve tribes, earnestly serving God night and day, hope to attain;
53:48
concerning which hope, O King Agrippa, I am accused by the Jews.'
53:49
「這是為什麼呢?神叫死人復活,你們竟以為不可信麼?」他為復活提出兩個論證:其一是從先知而來的;
'Why? Is it judged a thing incredible with you, if God raises the dead?' He sets down two arguments concerning the resurrection: one drawn from the prophets;
53:50
他並不引出一位先知,而是引用猶太人自己的信念;
and he does not bring forward a prophet, but the very belief of the Jews themselves;
53:51
and another, even a stronger one, drawn from facts.
53:52
Of what sort is this? That Christ, having risen from the dead, conversed with him.
53:53
他也從推理來證實這一點,仔細述說他先前的瘋狂;
And he establishes this too from reasonings, recounting exactly his former madness;
53:54
then also with an encomium of the Jews:
53:55
'Serving God night and day,' he says, 'it hopes to attain.'
53:56
So that, even if I were not of a blameless life, I ought not to be judged for these things, O King Agrippa.
53:57
'Why? Is it judged a thing incredible with you, if God raises the dead?' For if such were not the belief, if they had not been brought up in these doctrines, but it were now being introduced, perhaps no one would have received the word.
53:58
這一點也是佐證;
and this too is corroborative;
53:59
and he brings forward the chief priests as witnesses, and the cities abroad, and that he heard One saying to him:
53:60
'It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'
53:61
Then he also shows the loving-kindness of God: that even while he was persecuting, He appeared to him, and that 'He did not benefit me alone, but also sent me as a teacher to others.'
53:62
And he shows also the prophecy which he heard: 'For this purpose I appeared to you,
53:63
delivering you from the people and from the nations, to whom I send you.'
53:64
Showing all these things, he said:
53:65
'I verily thought with myself that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth;
53:66
我在耶路撒冷也曾這樣行了,我從祭司長得了權柄,把許多聖徒關在監裡;
which thing I also did in Jerusalem, and many of the saints I shut up in prisons, having received authority from the chief priests;
53:67
他們被殺的時候,我也投票定他們的罪;
and when they were put to death, I cast my vote against them;
53:68
我又在各會堂屢次刑罰他們,強逼他們說褻瀆的話;
and throughout all the synagogues I often punished them and compelled them to blaspheme;
53:69
and being exceedingly mad against them, I persecuted them even to the cities abroad.'
53:70
'Whereupon as I journeyed to Damascus with authority and commission from the chief priests, at midday along the road I saw, O King, from heaven, above the brightness of the sun, a light shining round about me and those who journeyed with me.'
53:71
'And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking to me and saying in the Hebrew tongue:
53:72
Saul, Saul, why do you persecute Me? It is hard for you to kick against the goads.'
53:73
'Who are You, Lord?' And He said:
53:74
'I am Jesus, whom you persecute.'
53:75
「你起來,用腳站著;
'But rise, and stand upon your feet;
53:76
for to this end I have appeared to you, to appoint you a minister and a witness both of the things which you have seen and of those in which I will appear to you, delivering you from the people and from the nations, to whom I send you, to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the authority of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and an inheritance among those sanctified by faith that is in Me.'
53:77
Observe how gently He converses.
53:78
'God,' he says, 'said to me: I have appeared to you to appoint you a minister and a witness, both of the things which you have seen and of those in which I will appear to you, delivering you from the people and from the nations, to whom I send you, to open their eyes, that they may turn from darkness to light and from the authority of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins.'
53:79
By these things I was persuaded; by this vision He drew me on, and so persuaded me that I should not delay.
53:80
「亞基帕王啊,我故此沒有違背那從天上來的異象;
'Whereupon, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision;
53:81
but declared first to those at Damascus and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the country of Judea, and to the nations, that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.'
53:82
He then who instructs others also concerning the best manner of life — how, he says, could I myself have become the author of sedition and strife? 'For these causes the Jews seized me in the temple and attempted to slay me.'
53:83
'Having therefore obtained help from God, I stand unto this day, testifying both to small and great, saying nothing beyond what the prophets
53:84
and Moses said should come to pass:
53:85
that the Christ should suffer, and that He, being the first from the resurrection of the dead, should proclaim light both to the people and to the nations.'
53:86
See how his discourse is without flattery, and how he ascribes the whole to God.
53:87
「因為我是從先知得力:就是基督必須受害,並且他既是頭一個從死裡復活的,就要傳光;
'For from the prophets I take my strength: that the Christ should suffer, that He, being the first from the resurrection of the dead, should proclaim light;
53:88
as if he said: Christ, having risen first, dies no more.
53:89
This is plain from His proclaiming it to all, and from their expecting it for themselves.
53:90
Then Festus, seeing his boldness, since he was discoursing to the king without turning away from looking toward him, as though he had been affected by something, says:
53:91
And that it is under some emotion that he says this, hear what follows:
53:92
And as he thus spoke, Festus said with a loud voice:
53:93
'You are mad, Paul; much learning is turning you to madness.'
53:94
What then does Paul do? Answering with gentleness, he says: 'I am not mad, most excellent Festus, but speak forth words of truth and soberness.'
53:95
Then he also teaches the reason why he turned his discourse toward the king:
53:96
「王也曉得這些事,所以我向他放膽直言;
'For the king knows about these things, to whom also I speak boldly;
53:97
我深信這些事沒有一件是向他隱藏的;
for I am persuaded that none of these things is hidden from him;
53:98
for this thing was not done in a corner.'
53:99
'King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe.'
53:100
This he said thus, all but taunting and saying to them:
53:101
我知道他把一切都清楚知道;
I know that he knows all things accurately;
53:102
and you ought to have been the first to know these things (for that which is added shows this — namely, 'For this thing was not done in a corner'), but you would not.
53:103
'King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe.'
53:104
And Agrippa said to Paul:
53:105
'In a little you persuade me to become a Christian.'
53:106
'I would to God that whether in little or in much, not only you, but also all who hear me this day, might become such as I am, except for these bonds.'
53:107
For my own part, I would pray to God that 'not in a little,' that is, well-nigh altogether.
53:108
And he does not pray simply, but with earnestness and intensity.
53:109
'I would that all men were such,' he says, 'not you only, but all men, such as I myself am.'
53:110
'Except these bonds.'
53:111
他並不是因這些鎖鏈而煩躁,也不是因被捆綁而覺羞恥(因為這事若有可誇之處,正是他的榮耀);
Not that he was fretting because of the bonds, nor ashamed because he was bound (for this, if anything, was to him a thing worthy of glory);
53:112
but having regard to their opinion, he spoke thus.
53:113
For this reason he added the words, 'Except these bonds.'
53:114
But let us look at the passage that has been read from the beginning.
53:115
'On the morrow therefore,' he says, 'when they were come into the place of hearing, at the command of Festus, Paul was brought forth.'
53:116
既然保羅上訴了,猶太人便退去了;於是那聚集的場面對他成了一個輝煌的舞台;
The Jews now withdrew, since he had made his appeal; and then the assembly becomes for him a splendid theater;
53:117
for with much pomp the king and all the multitude of the Jews were present—not some being there and others not.
53:118
'The multitude of the Jews,' he says, 'made suit to me, both at Jerusalem and here, crying out that he ought not to live any longer.'
53:119
They cried out, saying that he ought to die.
53:120
From this he shows that he had justly appealed to Caesar.
53:121
For if they had nothing dreadful to lay to his charge, while those men were raging madly, it was with good reason that he betook himself to Caesar.
53:122
'That, when the examination has been made by you,' he says, 'I may have something to write.'
53:123
Do you see how the matter is repeatedly sifted? And of this defense too the Jews were the cause—a defense which those also at Rome were going to learn.
53:124
'Touching all the things whereof I am accused,' he says, 'King Agrippa, I count myself happy that I am to make my defense before you.'
53:125
你看,他們雖不情願,卻成了傳報者,既傳報他們自己的惡,也傳報保羅的美德,而且是在那掌權者面前;
See how, even against their will, they become heralds both of their own wickedness and of Paul's virtue, and that before the very ruler;
53:126
以致保羅被帶走時,比他若沒有鎖鏈而離去更為榮耀;
so that Paul was led away more gloriously than if he had departed without bonds;
53:127
for he was no longer led away as a deceiver and impostor, seeing that so many judges had acquitted him.
53:128
Having therefore stripped himself of all things in the eyes of those among whom he was born and bred—and not simply so, but thus clear of suspicion—he sets foot in Rome.
53:129
那麼這是什麼意思呢?「我已經一次上訴於凱撒了」;
What then is this? 'Once for all I have appealed to Caesar';
53:130
how long? But what? Again he was ready to render account, and that before one who best knew the affairs.
53:131
因此他也大有膽量地申辯,因為那些定他罪的人對他並無權柄;
Therefore also with much boldness he makes his defense, inasmuch as those who condemned him had no authority over him;
53:132
他雖然知道他們並無權柄,而那判決「你必往凱撒那裡去」已然生效,卻依舊交帳,並就一切事作了許多的答辯;
who, although they had no authority, but that sentence held good—'You shall go to Caesar'—nevertheless renders his account, and gives many satisfactions concerning all things;
53:133
not concerning some things, but not concerning others.
53:134
And virtually this is what he says by what he answers:
53:135
他們控告我作亂,控告我信奉異端,並說我玷污了聖殿;
They accuse me of sedition, they accuse me of heresy, and that I profaned the temple;
53:136
「我從幼年為人如何,眾猶太人都知道」;
'My manner of life then from my youth up is known to all the Jews';
53:137
that to stir up seditions is not of my character, the accusers themselves are witnesses.
53:138
Being zealous for the traditions of my fathers, this too he hints at here by saying, 'My manner of life from my youth up.'
53:139
And when the whole people was present, then he calls for their testimony.
53:140
他這樣行,不僅在呂西亞的公堂前,也在非斯都的公堂前;
And he does this not only before the tribunal of Lysias, but also before that of Festus;
53:141
如今在此也是如此,就是當有更多人在場的時候;
and again here, when more were present;
53:142
but there no long defense was needed, since the letters of Lysias acquitted him.
53:143
'They know,' he says, 'all the Jews, having had knowledge of me from the first.'
53:144
And he does not say what sort his life was, but leaves it to their conscience, and lays the whole stress upon the sect, thereby showing that he would not have chosen it if he had been a wicked and base man.
53:145
'Concerning this sect therefore,' he says, 'for which I stand being judged.'
53:146
這正是連在他們自己中間也受尊崇的;為了這事他們禱告,為了這事他們事奉神,好叫他們得著它;
This very thing is held in honor even among themselves; for this they prayed, for this they serve God, that they may attain to it;
53:147
this it is that I proclaim, and concerning this hope I am accused.
53:148
It is therefore the mark of madmen to do everything in order to attain to this, yet to persecute the man who believes in it.
53:149
他說:「我自己確實曾以為,應當多方攻擊拿撒勒人耶穌的名」;
'I verily thought with myself,' he says, 'that I ought to do many things contrary to the name of Jesus of Nazareth';
53:150
that is, I judged that I ought to do these things, because I was not of the disciples of Christ, but was among those who warred against Him.
53:151
Whence also he becomes a witness worthy of credit, in that he who did ten thousand things, and warred against those who believed, and compelled them to blaspheme, and set everything in motion—cities, rulers—and did these things by his own hand, was thus suddenly transformed.
53:152
接著又有那些與他同在的見證人;
Then again the witnesses who were with him;
53:153
then he shows that he was justly persuaded—both from the light, and from the prophets, and from the outcomes, and from the things now come to pass.
53:154
'At midday, along the road, I saw a light shining round about me, and those who journeyed with me.'
53:155
See then how he assures them both from the prophets and from these things.
53:156
For lest he should seem to be introducing novelties, although he had great things to say, he again takes refuge in the prophets, and sets their words in the midst.
53:157
這事的確更值得相信,因為是剛剛才發生的;
This indeed is more worthy of credit, as having just now come to pass;
53:158
but since he alone saw it, he again confirms it from the prophets.
53:159
你且看他在公堂上與在教會中並不是用同樣的方式講論;
And observe him not discoursing in the same way in the tribunal and in the church;
53:160
因為在那裡他確實說:「你們也殺了祂」;
for there indeed he says, 'You also slew Him';
53:161
但在這裡卻絕無此類的話,免得更加激動他們的怒氣;
but here nothing of the sort, so as not to inflame their wrath the more;
53:162
yet he shows the same thing by saying, 'If Christ was to suffer.'
53:163
Thus he acquits them of the charges.
53:164
「所以我所傳揚的這事,就是祂首先從死裡復活,我乃是憑眾先知來證明的」;
'That very thing therefore which I proclaim, that He rose the first from the dead, I show from the prophets';
53:165
for indeed the prophets also proclaim this.
53:166
Receive therefore the word, as being that of the prophets themselves.
53:167
But when he had told the vision, he next tells also, with all freedom, his good deeds.
53:168
What deeds are these? 'To open their eyes,' he says, 'and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the authority of Satan unto God.'
53:169
That is, not so as to punish, but so as to make an apostle.
53:170
See, he points out the evils that beset the unbelievers—Satan, darkness—just as also the good things of the believers—the light, God, the inheritance of the saints.
53:171
And he exhorts not simply to repent, but also to show forth a wondrous life.
53:172
你且看,外邦人處處都與這番話交織在一起;
And observe everywhere the Gentiles interwoven with the discourse;
53:173
for those who were present were of the Gentiles.
53:174
'Testifying,' he says, 'both to small and great,' that is, both to the notable and to the obscure.
53:175
This he said thus because of the soldiers.
53:176
Then, leaving the position of one making a defense, he took up that of a teacher.
53:177
Wherefore Festus also says to him:
53:178
Then, lest he should seem to be himself a teacher,
53:179
he brings forward the prophets and Moses:
53:180
'If Christ was to suffer,' he says, 'if He, being the first to rise from the dead, was to proclaim light both to the people and to the Gentiles.'
53:181
Festus said with a loud voice,
53:182
So full of wrath and anger was his voice.
53:183
What then does Paul do? 'For this thing,' he says, 'was not done in a corner.'
53:184
在這裏他所說的是關於十字架、關於復活的事;
Here he speaks this concerning the cross, concerning the resurrection;
53:185
and that the doctrine has come to be everywhere throughout the world. 'King Agrippa,' he says, 'believest thou?' He did not say, 'the resurrection,' but, 'the prophets.'
53:186
Then he anticipates him, and says:
53:187
'In a little thou persuadest me to become a Christian.'
53:188
保羅沒有領會「稍微」是甚麼意思,卻以為那是指「從稍微」,就是「在短時間之內」的意思;
Paul did not perceive what 'In a little' meant, but supposed that it meant 'From a little,' i.e. 'in a short space';
53:189
wherefore also to this he makes answer:
53:190
And he did not say, 'I would not,' but, 'I would to God, that not only thou, but also all that hear me.'
53:191
Behold his speech, free from all flattery.
53:192
'I would to God,' he says, 'that all this day were become such as I also am, except these bonds.' Behold!
53:193
He who glories in his bonds, who brings them forth as a chain of gold, now prays that these may be far from others.
53:194
For they were still in a somewhat weaker state, and so his word to them was more condescending.
53:195
Since, that he counted the bonds a better thing, hear how in his Epistles he always sets them before all else, saying:
53:196
「為基督耶穌被囚的保羅」;
'Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ';
53:197
又說:「我為這緣故受這鎖鏈的捆鎖,然而神的話卻不被捆鎖」;
and again, 'For which cause I am bound with this chain, but the word of God is not bound';
53:198
and, 'Even unto bonds as an evildoer.'
53:199
Not 'bonds' only, but he added, 'as an evildoer,' magnifying the glory that came from the bonds.
53:200
The punishment was twofold: both that he was bound, and that it was as an evildoer.
53:201
因為他若是為著某種善事而被捆鎖,這事或許還能帶來些許安慰;
For if he had been bound as for some good cause, the thing would have brought some consolation;
53:202
但如今卻是像犯人一樣,且像因大罪被拿的人一樣;
but now, both as an evildoer, and as one taken for dreadful crimes;
53:203
and yet he cared for none of these things.
53:204
Such is a soul that has taken wing with the heavenly love.
53:205
For if those who love this base love count nothing either glorious or precious, but only those things which conduce to their desire—these are judged both glorious and honorable, and to them the beloved is everything; much more do those who are taken with this love count the penalties as nothing.
53:206
但我們若不明白所說的這些話,也不足為奇;
But if we do not understand the things spoken, it is no wonder;
53:207
for we are inexperienced in this philosophy.
53:208
因為人若被基督的火所擄獲,就變得如同獨自一人住在地上的人一樣;
For if one be taken with the fire of Christ, he becomes such as a man would be who dwelt alone upon the earth;
53:209
以致他絲毫不在乎榮耀或羞辱;
so that he cares nothing for glory or dishonor;
53:210
but just as one dwelling alone would care for none of these things, so neither then does such a one care.
53:211
他這樣藐視試煉、鞭打與牢獄,彷彿是在別人的身體上受這些苦,又彷彿他擁有一副金剛不壞的身軀;
He so despises temptations and scourgings and prisons, as though he suffered these things in another's body, or as though he possessed a body of adamant;
53:212
and the pleasures of this life he so laughs to scorn, and is so insensible to them, as we are to dead bodies, or as though we ourselves were dead.
53:213
And he is as far from being overcome by any passion, as pure gold when fired would be far from any stain.
53:214
For just as flies would not fall into the midst of a flame, but flee from it, so also the passions dare not even come near to such a man.
53:215
關於這些事,我本願能從我們中間舉出例證來;
And of these things I could have wished to be able to bring the examples from among ourselves;
53:216
but since we are at a loss, it is necessary to take refuge in this very man himself.
53:217
Behold then how he was disposed toward the whole world.
53:218
他說:「世界就我而言已經釘在十字架上,我就世界而言也是如此」;
'The world,' he says, 'is crucified unto me, and I unto the world';
53:219
that is, 'I am dead to the world, and it is dead to me.'
53:220
'I live, yet no longer I, but Christ liveth in me.'
53:221
This it is for Paul alone to say; but for us, who fall so far short of him as heaven is far from earth, it is fitting to hide our faces, so that we dare not even open our mouth.
53:222
And that he was as it were in a desert, and thus beheld the things present, hear him saying:
53:223
'While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.'
53:224
你說甚麼呢?其實與你所說的恰恰相反;
What sayest thou? Nay, the very opposite of what thou sayest is the case;
53:225
for the invisible things we do not see, but the visible we do see.
53:226
你原先所有的眼睛是怎樣的,基督所賜的眼睛也是那樣的;
Such as the eyes thou hadst, such are those given by Christ;
53:227
因為正如那肉眼看見所看得見的事物,卻不看見那看不見的;
for just as those eyes see the things that are seen, but do not see the things that are not seen;
53:228
這另一種眼睛卻恰恰相反;
so those others do the contrary;
53:229
凡注視那看不見之事物的,就不看那看得見的;
no one who looks at the invisible things sees the visible;
53:230
no one who looks at the things that are seen sees the invisible.
53:231
Or does not this happen even among us? For when, gathering up the mind, we reason upon some one of the invisible things, our sight becomes suspended and lifted above its operations.
53:232
Let us despise glory; let us be willing rather to be laughed at than to be praised.
53:233
因為被人譏笑的,絲毫不受虧損;
For he who is laughed at is nothing hurt;
53:234
but he who is praised is greatly injured.
53:235
我們不要因那些恐嚇人的而自高,倒要像對待孩童一樣看待這事;
Let us not think highly of those who put men in fear, but let us treat this as we do in the case of children;
53:236
因為我們若看見有人在恐嚇小孩子,也決不會欽佩他;
for neither, if we saw someone frightening little children, should we admire him;
53:237
因為人若能恐嚇,也只能恐嚇孩童;
for if one frightens, he frightens children;
53:238
for a man he would not be able to frighten.
53:239
又如那些恐嚇孩童的人,或是把眼皮往上拉,或是以別樣方式扭曲面容纔能如此,若目光康健溫和,就不能這樣做;
And just as those who frighten children do so either by pulling up their eyelids, or otherwise distorting their face, but having a sound and gentle eye they could not do this;
53:240
so indeed these men also do it by distorting the discerning faculty of the understanding.
53:241
So that a gentle man, and beautiful in soul, no one would fear, but we all reverence, honor, and stand in awe of him.
53:242
Do you not see how the fearful man is both hateful and abhorred by us all? For which of the things that are able merely to frighten do we not turn away from? Not wild beasts, not voices, not sights, not places, not air, such as darkness?
53:243
Let us then not count it a great thing if men fear us.
53:244
因為第一,沒有人真正因我們而驚惶;
For first, no man is terrified of us;
53:245
secondly, that even our being feared is no great thing.
53:246
Counting as wretched the things by which it holds together, we yet admire and count blessed this very glory.
53:247
For who would not count the philosopher blessed, even though poverty and all such things seem to be wretched? When, therefore, he shines forth through the very things that seem wretched, behold the surpassing greatness.
53:248
You take great pride in your power, O man? And what sort of power, tell me, was conferred upon you by vote? You became mighty at the hands of men.
53:249
Elect yourself from within.
53:250
For the ruler is not the one who is so called, but the one who truly is.
53:251
For just as a king could not make a man a physician, nor an orator, so neither can he make a ruler.
53:252
For it is not the documents that make a ruler, nor the title.
53:253
Since, if you will, let someone build a surgery, let him have disciples too, let him have instruments and drugs, and let him go in to the sick.
53:254
Is it enough that these things make him a physician? By no means.
53:255
But there is need of the art; and without this, not only do these things profit nothing, but they even do harm.
53:256
For it is better that one who is no physician should not even possess drugs.
53:257
The one, then, who has no drugs neither saves nor destroys.
53:258
But the one who has them destroys, not knowing how to use them.
53:259
Since salvation lies not in the nature of the drugs alone, but also in the art of the one who applies them.
53:260
For if this be lacking, all is ruined.
53:261
Such also is the ruler.
53:262
He has instruments: his voice, his anger, the executioners, banishments, honours, gifts, praises.
53:263
He has drugs also: the laws.
53:264
He has the sick too: men.
53:265
He has a workshop: the court of judgement.
53:266
He has disciples: the soldiers.
53:267
If, then, he does not know the science of medicine, none of these things is of any use.
53:268
The judge is a physician of souls, not of bodies.
53:269
And if this healing of bodies requires so much care, much more does that of the soul, since the soul is also greater than bodies.
53:270
It is not, therefore, to have the name of a ruler that is to be a ruler.
53:271
Since others also are called by great names.
53:272
Such as Paul, Peter, James, John.
53:273
But they are not what they are called by reason of their names, just as neither am I.
53:274
But I bear the same name as that blessed one, yet am not of the same nature as he.
53:275
I am not John, but am so called.
53:276
So those men too are not rulers, but are so called.
53:277
But those are rulers even apart from these things, just as a physician also, even if he does not use his science but has it within his soul, is a physician.
53:278
There are rulers who are rulers of themselves.
53:279
For there are these three things for the soul: a household, a city, the whole inhabited world.
53:280
καὶ ὁδῷ .
And by an ordered path do affairs advance.
53:281
It is necessary, therefore, that the one who is going to preside over a household and to build it up well should first set his own soul in order.
53:282
But if he cannot govern his own soul, where there is but one soul, where he himself is master, where he is ever present with himself, how shall he build up others? He who is able to set his own soul in order, making one part rule and another part be ruled, this man will be able to govern a household also.
53:283
But if he could not govern a soul, how shall he be able to govern the whole world? These things have been said by me that we may not be all aflutter over offices, that we may know what rule really is.
53:284
For this is not rule, but rather a mockery and slavery, and one might call it a thousand other things.
53:285
Tell me, what is proper to a ruler? Is it not to benefit those who are ruled and to do them good? What then, if this does not come to pass? How shall he benefit others who has not benefited himself? He who has ten thousand tyrannies of the passions in his soul, how shall he cut off those of others? So too with luxury.
53:286
This is not luxury, but another thing is.
53:287
For just as the ruler was shown to be not this man, but another.
53:288
So too the one who truly enjoys luxury is another.
53:289
For it seems to be luxury to enjoy pleasure and to fill the belly.
53:290
But it is not this; rather, the opposite is true: to have a wondrous soul and to be in gladness.
53:291
For let there be someone eating, drinking, living wantonly, and then let him be anxious and downcast.
53:292
Can this man be in luxury? Not eating and drinking, then, is luxury, but to be in gladness.
53:293
Let there be someone taking dry bread, and let him be filled with cheerfulness.
53:294
Is this pleasure? Then it is luxury also.
53:295
Let us see, then, to whom this comes: to the rich or to those who are not rich? Neither to these simply, nor to those; but to those who so order their own soul as not to have many occasions for despondency.
53:296
And what kind of life is this? perhaps someone will say.
53:297
For I see all agape and wishing to hear what this life is that has no despondency.
53:298
Let it therefore first be agreed among you that this is pleasure, this is luxury, when despondency does not trouble one, and does not demand of me meats and wine and rich sauces and silken garments and an abundant table.
53:299
But if I show that such a life is present apart from these things, love this pleasure, love this life.
53:300
For most of our griefs come upon us from not reasoning as we ought.
53:301
Who then will be more grieved, the one who cares for none of these things, or the one who cares? The one who fears changes of fortune, or the one who does not fear? The one who dreads envy, jealousy, false accusations, plots, ruin, or the one who is free from these? The one who needs more, or the one who needs nothing? The one who is slave to ten thousand things, or the one who is slave to none? The one who has need of ten thousand things, or the free man? The one who fears one master, or the one who fears ten thousand? The pleasure, then, is greater here.
53:302
This, therefore, let us pursue, and let us not be all aflutter over present things.
53:303
But let us laugh to scorn all the show of this life, and let us everywhere keep to due measure, that we may be able to pass this present life without grief, and to attain the good things that have been promised, by the grace and love toward man of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of the ages.
