While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who were hearing the word.
24:2
那些奉割禮、與彼得同來的信徒都驚奇,因為聖靈的恩賜也澆灌在外邦人身上;
And the believers from among the circumcision, as many as had come with Peter, were amazed, because upon the Gentiles also the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out;
24:3
for they heard them speaking with tongues and magnifying God.
24:4
Behold the dispensation of God.
24:5
祂不容那講論說完,也不讓那洗禮出於彼得的吩咐;
He did not permit the discourse to be brought to completion, nor the baptism to take place at Peter's command;
24:6
but since they had shown that their mind was wonderful, and the beginning of teaching had been made, and they believed that baptism is altogether a remission of sins, then the Spirit came upon them.
24:7
And this comes to pass with God beforehand preparing a great defense for Peter.
24:8
And they do not simply receive the Spirit, but they were speaking with tongues, which also astounded those who had come together.
24:9
但這事為什麼要如此安排呢?是為著猶太人的緣故;
But why then is the matter arranged in this way? Because of the Jews;
24:10
for indeed they were exceedingly hostile toward it.
24:11
Therefore in every case the whole thing is done by God.
24:12
彼得幾乎是很單純地在場受教,知道此後他們必須接觸外邦人;
And Peter is present being taught, as it were, quite plainly that henceforth they must lay hold of the Gentiles;
24:13
and that through them this must come to pass.
24:14
For if after so many things a dispute arises both in Caesarea and in Jerusalem, what would not have happened had these things not accompanied it? For this reason these things come to pass even with abundance.
24:15
But observe how Peter also, taking his occasion, makes his defense.
24:16
And that he answers after taking his occasion, hear the evangelist as he relates and says:
24:17
Can anyone forbid the water, that these should not be baptized, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we also? Do you see to what the matter was brought up, and how he travailed to bring it forth? So long ago was he of this mind.
24:18
Can anyone, he says, forbid the water? For it is almost as though he presses hard upon those who forbid and say that this ought not to happen.
24:19
The whole thing, he says, is done; the more necessary thing is done—the baptism with which we also were baptized.
24:20
And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.
24:21
在他申辯之後,才吩咐他們受洗,藉著事實本身教導他們;
After making his defense, then he commanded them to be baptized, instructing them by the very facts;
24:22
so hostile were the Jews.
24:23
For this reason he first makes his defense, even though the facts cried aloud, and then he gave the command.
24:24
Then they asked him to remain some days.
24:25
Hence with reason he now takes courage and remains.
24:26
Now the apostles and the brethren who were in Judea heard that the Gentiles also had received the word of God.
24:27
And when Peter went up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision contended with him, saying, You went in to men having uncircumcision, and ate with them.
24:28
After so many things, those of the circumcision contended—not the apostles.
24:29
What is meant by 'contended'? They were offended, he says, not a little.
24:30
They do not say, Why did you preach? but, Why did you eat with them? But Peter does not take his stand upon this cold matter (for it was indeed a cold thing), but upon that great matter, saying that, If they too partook of the Spirit, how was it not possible to impart this to them? How then did this not happen in the case of the Samaritans, but rather the opposite? For indeed not only did it not happen before baptism, but not even after baptism.
24:31
And they were not indignant, but rather, having heard, he sent for this very purpose.
24:32
但就是在這裡,他們也不以此為控告;
But neither here do they bring this as a charge;
24:33
因為他們知道這是出於神的恩典;
for they knew that it was of divine grace;
24:34
but, Why, they say, did you eat with them? And besides, great and boundless is the difference between the Samaritans and the Gentiles.
24:35
或者他被控告,乃是出於安排,好叫這些人得以明白;
Or perhaps it comes about by dispensation that he is accused, so that these might learn;
24:36
for Peter would not have spoken simply without cause.
24:37
But observe his freedom from arrogance and vainglory.
24:38
For beginning, he says, Peter set the matter forth to them in order, saying:
24:39
I was in the city of Joppa praying.
24:40
And he does not say why, nor on what occasion.
24:41
And I saw in a trance a vision, a certain vessel descending like a great sheet, let down from heaven by four corners, and it came even to me.
24:42
Fixing my gaze upon it, I considered, and saw the four-footed beasts of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the creeping things, and the birds of heaven; and I heard a voice saying to me:
24:43
Rise, Peter; kill and eat.
24:44
他藉這些話要說什麼呢?他說:單是看見那塊布,這就足以叫人信服了;
What does he wish to say by these things? This too was enough, he says, to persuade—to behold the sheet;
24:45
yet besides, a voice was also added.
24:46
By no means, Lord, for nothing common or unclean has ever entered into my mouth.
24:47
你看見嗎?他說:我盡了我的本分;
Do you see? I did my part, he says;
24:48
I said that I never ate.
24:49
This is in reply to what those men were saying, that You went in and ate with them.
24:50
但這話他並沒有對哥尼流說;
But this he does not say to Cornelius;
24:51
And a voice answered me a second time from heaven:
24:52
What God has cleansed, you must not call common.
24:53
And this happened three times, and again all was drawn up into heaven.
24:54
And behold, immediately three men stood before the house in which I was, having been sent from Caesarea to me.
24:55
凡是必要的事他都敘述,其餘的卻默然不提;
He relates the things that were necessary, but keeps silent about the rest;
24:56
or rather, through these very things he establishes those others as well.
24:57
你看他如何申辯,並不肯憑著作師傅的尊嚴行事;
And observe how he makes his defense, and does not think fit to use the dignity of a teacher;
24:58
for he knew that the more gently he spoke, the more he would win them over.
24:59
Nothing common or unclean, he says, ever entered into my mouth.
24:60
Thus his whole defense was one of dispensation.
24:61
And behold, immediately three men stood at the house in which I was.
24:62
And the Spirit told me to go with them, making no distinction.
24:63
a legislation? And these six brethren also went with me.
24:64
What could be more humble than Peter, who from this and from the brethren puts forward his testimony? And six brethren went with me, and we entered into the man's house.
24:65
And he reported to us how he had seen the angel standing in his house and saying to him:
24:66
Send men to Joppa, and summon Simon who is surnamed Peter, who will speak words to you by which you shall be saved, you and all your house.
24:67
他並沒有把天使對哥尼流所說的話都講出來;
And he did not tell the things spoken by the angel to Cornelius;
24:68
「你的禱告和你的賙濟,已經上達到神面前蒙記念了」——免得這些人因這話被絆倒;
Your prayers and your alms have gone up for a memorial before God—so that these might not take offense at them;
24:69
而只講那些並無什麼了不起之處的事;
but only those things which had nothing great about them;
24:70
He will speak words to you by which you shall be saved, you and all your house.
24:71
Do you see how, because of what I said before, he presses on? And he says nothing about the man's mildness of character.
24:72
既然聖靈已差遣他,神已吩咐他,天使已從那邊呼召他,聖靈又從這邊催逼他,化解了此事的疑難——他還當作什麼呢?然而這一切他都不提,卻單從那最後發生的事來立論;
Since, then, the Spirit had sent him, God had commanded, the angel had called him from that side, the Spirit was thrusting him from this side, resolving the strangeness of the matter—what ought he to have done? Yet he says nothing of all this, but grounds his argument on what came last;
24:73
which, in and of itself, was an incontrovertible testimony.
24:74
"And why," one asks, "did not this alone take place?" Out of abundance on God's part, that it might be shown that the beginning too was not from the Apostle.
24:75
因為他若是自作主張前去,這些事一件也沒有發生,他們必大大受絆倒;
For if he had departed of his own accord, none of these things having happened, they would have been utterly scandalized;
24:76
so that from the outset he wins over their minds, saying to them:
24:77
"who received the Holy Spirit even as we also did."
24:78
"And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, just as also upon us at the beginning."
24:79
And he is not content with this, but also brings to remembrance a word of the Lord:
24:80
"And I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said:"
24:81
"John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit."
24:82
So that nothing newer had happened, but the very thing which He had foretold.
24:83
"But there was no need to baptize," one says.
24:84
For the baptism had been completed, the Spirit having fallen upon them.
24:85
"I first commanded them to be baptized;"
24:86
"but what then? Can anyone forbid the water, that these should not be baptized?"—by this showing that he himself had done nothing.
24:87
"That very thing, then, which we had received, those men received."
24:88
"If then God gave them the same gift," he says, "as He gave also to us when we believed on the Lord Jesus, who was I, that I could withstand God?" That out of abundance he might stop their mouths, he added for this reason:
24:89
Do you see how he does not permit those who have once believed to have anything less? "God gave them the same gift as He gave to us also when we believed on the Lord;"
24:90
so that He Himself cleanses them.
24:91
but rather, "to us"—by this also smoothing his words.
24:92
"Why then are you indignant, when we call them partakers with us?" And having heard these things, they were quieted, and glorified God, saying:
24:93
"Then to the Gentiles also God has granted repentance unto life."
24:94
你看見這一切如何都是出於彼得的講論嗎?他把所發生的事述說得如此得當。因此他們也歸榮耀與神,因祂也將悔改賜給了他們;
Do you see how the whole came about from the address of Peter, who reported well the things that had taken place? Wherefore also they glorified God, that He had granted repentance to them also;
24:95
so were they humbled by these words.
24:96
From this point onward the door was opened to the Gentiles.
24:97
But let us, if it seem good, look again from the beginning at the things that have been said.
24:98
他沒有說「彼得受了非難」,卻說「那些奉割禮的人」與他相爭;
He did not say that "Peter was contended with," but "those of the circumcision;"
24:99
since he himself knew what was being prepared.
24:100
And indeed that was the thing to marvel at—how they too believed.
24:101
因此,當他們聽見這些人信了的時候,並不覺得什麼;
So then, when they heard that they had believed, they felt nothing;
24:102
but when God bestowed the Spirit, when Peter set forth his own trance, saying:
24:103
"God has shown me not to call any man common or unclean."
24:104
Wherefore he also prepares beforehand the argument on behalf of the Gentiles, showing that, once faith had come, there was no longer even any 'Gentiles.'
24:105
那麼,他們在受洗以前便領受了聖靈,這也不足為奇;
It is nothing to marvel at, then, if before baptism they received the Spirit;
24:106
for in our own case too this came to pass.
24:107
Here Peter shows that they were baptized not merely as the rest, but far better.
24:108
And for this reason it is thus dispensed out of abundance, that they might have nothing to say, but might, even so, count them as equals to themselves.
24:109
"And they asked him," it says, "to remain."
24:110
Do you see how they were not favorably disposed toward him? You saw the zeal, of what sort they had
24:111
為律法而發的熱心呢?他們既不顧念彼得的尊榮,也不顧那已行的神蹟,也不顧那何等重大的成就——就是他們領受了道;
for the Law? They did not reverence Peter's dignity, nor the signs that had been done, nor the great achievement of their receiving the word;
24:112
but over those small matters they contended.
24:113
For if none of these things had been, the achievement would not have sufficed.
24:114
但彼得並不這樣為自己申辯;
But Peter does not defend himself in this way;
24:115
or rather, the words were not of his own sagacity, but of the Spirit.
24:116
And through his defense he shows himself to be in no way the cause, but everywhere God.
24:117
And all but in so many words he says this to them:
24:118
"It was He Himself who caused me to fall into a trance;"
24:119
"for I was simply at prayer;"
24:120
"again He Himself spoke, and not even so did I hearken;"
24:121
"the Spirit commanded me to go;"
24:122
"and yet, having gone, I did not rush upon it;"
24:123
"I said that God had sent, and after these things not even so did I baptize, but again God wrought the whole."
24:124
Therefore it was God who baptized them, not I.
24:125
All these things having taken place, was there then any need to add the water? But as though nothing were lacking, "Who was I," he says, "that I could withstand God?" Wonderful! What a defense!
24:126
既知道這些事,你們就當靜默;
Knowing these things, then, be quiet;
24:127
他卻怎麼行呢?他接納他們的衝動,向那些控告他的人為自己申辯;
but what does he do? He accepts their impulse, and defends himself to those who bring the charge;
24:128
"Who was I, that I could withstand God?"—saying this
24:129
他運用這番申辯,語氣極其使人愧慚而沉重;
employing his defense in a manner exceedingly abashing and weighty;
24:130
whereupon at last, being made afraid, they were quieted, and glorified God.
24:131
So ought we too, in the good things of our neighbors, to glorify God, and not to reproach them—as many of the newly-enlightened do reproach, when they see others enlightened and immediately departing.
24:132
We ought to glorify God, both for this, and because He does not permit them to remain.
24:133
如此,你若願意,你所領受的乃是更大的恩賜;
So that you too, if you are willing, have received the greater gift;
24:134
I do not speak in respect of the enlightenment (for that is one and the same, both his and yours), but in respect of your having received a term set for approving yourself.
24:135
那人穿上了華服,卻沒有蒙准得以身著此袍昂然遊行;
That man put on the robe and was not left to make his procession in it;
24:136
but to you God has given much authority to use the weapons as need requires, and from this present life to take proof of them.
24:137
那人離去時,只擁有信心的賞賜;
That man departs having the reward of faith alone;
24:138
but you stand in the arena of works, able to receive many recompenses, and to appear as much more resplendent than he as the sun outshines the tiniest star, as the general outshines the lowest soldier—or rather, as much as the king.
24:139
更確切地說,不要去指責,卻要時常修正歸正;
or rather, do not accuse, but always set things right;
24:140
因為單單指責是不夠的;
for it is not enough merely to accuse;
24:141
Have you been thrown down? Have you suffered dreadful things? Rise up, recover yourself!
24:142
You are still standing in the arena, the contest still holds together.
24:143
Do you not see how many, though thrown in the wrestling, afterward fought back and won? Only do not fall willingly.
24:144
Do you count the one who has departed blessed? Much rather count yourself blessed.
24:145
Was that man released from his sins? But you, if you are willing, will not only wash away your sins, but will also possess good deeds to your credit—which for him is no longer possible.
24:146
It is in our power to call ourselves back.
24:147
悔改的良藥是極大的;
Great are the remedies of repentance;
24:148
let no one despair of himself.
24:149
那對自己絕望的人,才真正是該絕望的;
That man is truly deserving of despair who despairs of himself;
24:150
he no longer has any hopes of salvation.
24:151
跌入罪惡的深淵並非可怕,可怕的是跌下去以後就躺著不起;
It is not the falling into the depth of evils that is dreadful, but the lying there after having fallen;
24:152
it is not the coming into the depth of evils that is impious, but the growing careless after coming there.
24:153
你本該掛慮的事——請告訴我——你反倒輕看它嗎?你身受這麼多創傷,就頹然倒下了嗎?靈魂的創傷沒有一樣是無法醫治的;
That for which you ought to be anxious—tell me—do you rather despise it? Having so many wounds, have you sunk down? No wound of the soul is incurable;
24:154
然而在身體上這樣無法醫治的傷有許多,在靈魂上卻一樣也沒有;
but while in the case of the body there are many such incurable wounds, in the case of the soul there is none;
24:155
and for those bodily ones we do not cease from toiling, while for these of the soul we are careless.
24:156
Do you not see the robber, how in a brief time he set things right? Do you not see the martyrs, how in a brief moment they accomplished everything? But it is not now a time of martyrdom? Yet it is a time of contests—as I have often said—if only we are willing.
24:157
For 'all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus,' he says, 'shall be persecuted.'
24:158
Those who live godly are always persecuted—if not by men, then by demons, which is indeed a harsher persecution.
24:159
And first of all it is by ease itself that those who are not vigilant endure this.
24:160
Or do you think it a small persecution to be at ease? This is heavier than all, this is even worse than persecution.
24:161
因為正如水流漫過一般,安逸使靈魂鬆懈;
For just as a stream flowing over it, so ease slackens the soul;
24:162
and what summer and winter are, that persecution and ease are.
24:163
But that you may learn abundantly that this persecution is the worse, consider it from this.
24:164
It pours sleep over the soul, it produces much yawning and sloth, it rouses up the passions on every side, it arms pride, it arms pleasure, it arms wrath, envy, vainglory, jealousy.
24:165
但在逼迫之中,這些事沒有一樣能攪擾我們;
But in persecution none of these things is able to trouble us;
24:166
rather, fear coming upon us, as with a whip striking a fiercely barking dog, does not allow all these passions so much as to growl.
24:167
在逼迫中誰能虛榮呢?誰能沉溺於逸樂呢?沒有一個人;
Who in persecution is able to be vainglorious? Who to give himself to pleasure? No one;
24:168
but much trembling and fear, working great calm, preparing a fair-weather harbor, making the soul reverent.
24:169
I once heard our fathers saying (may it not befall us, for we are commanded not to ask for temptation)
24:170
that in the persecution of old one might see men who were truly Christians.
24:171
因為那時沒有人顧念錢財,沒有人顧念妻子,沒有人顧念兒女,沒有人顧念房屋,沒有人顧念家鄉;
For no one gave thought to money, no one to wife, no one to children, no one to house, no one to homeland;
24:172
one was the earnest concern of all: to save their own soul.
24:173
Some hid in tombs and graves, others in deserts.
24:174
And not only men, but even delicate and tender women were then in hiding, doing continual battle with hunger.
24:175
Consider then, whether any longing for luxury, any longing for indulgence, would ever have come upon a woman hidden beside a coffin and waiting for the maidservant, that she might come bringing a meal, and fearing lest she somehow be caught, and lying in the tomb as in a furnace;
24:176
for would she indeed reflect that luxury ever existed, that there is a world at all? Do you see that now rather is the persecution, as the passions like wild beasts assail us on every side? Now is the grievous persecution, both in this way, and because it is not even reckoned to be a persecution.
24:177
μεν·
因為這場被算為和平的爭戰,也正有這樣的難處:叫我們不武裝起來抵擋它,也不奮起;
For this too is the grievousness of this war, which is reckoned as peace: that we do not arm ourselves against it, nor rouse ourselves up;
24:178
no one fears, no one trembles.
24:179
你若不信,就去問那些希臘人,那些逼迫者,究竟基督徒的光景何時更為嚴謹,何時眾人更被稱許?那時信徒的數目雖然縮減到很少;
But if you disbelieve, ask the Greeks, the persecutors, when the affairs of the Christians were more exact, when all were more approved? To a small number, indeed, the multitude was then reduced;
24:180
but it was rich in a great wealth of virtue.
24:181
For what is the profit, tell me, of there being much grass, when precious stones might be there instead? The multitude lies not in the greatness of the number, but in the approvedness of virtue.
24:182
but the world was not worthy of him.
24:183
誠然這世界有千千萬萬的人;
And indeed the world is myriads upon myriads;
24:184
but they are not myriads, when they are not even equal to the one.
24:185
Better is one who does the will of the Lord than ten thousand transgressors.
24:186
This also a certain wise man hinted at when he says somewhat thus:
24:187
Do not desire a multitude of useless children.
24:188
These bring blasphemy upon God rather than if they were not Christians at all.
24:189
What need have I of a multitude? It is more fuel for the fire.
24:190
This too you may learn from the body, that measured nourishment with health is better than luxury with sickness.
24:191
前者比後者更真是滋養;
The former is more truly nourishment than the latter;
24:192
this is nourishment, that is disease.
24:193
This too one might see in war, that it is better to have ten experienced and noble men than ten thousand inexperienced.
24:194
These latter, besides accomplishing nothing themselves, also hinder those who are working.
24:195
這道理你在船上也能看見,就是有兩個熟練的水手,勝過無數沒有經驗的人;
This too one might find in the case of a ship, that it is better to have two experienced sailors than a countless multitude of the inexperienced;
24:196
for these latter will even sink the ship.
24:197
I say these things, not out of any hostility toward your multitude, but wishing all to be approved, and not to take confidence in the multitude.
24:198
進入地獄的人遠為眾多;
Far more numerous are those who enter into hell;
24:199
but the Kingdom is greater than it, even if it has but few.
24:200
'As the sand of the sea' was the multitude of the people, but one saved them.
24:201
摩西是一個人,卻比眾人更有能力;
One was Moses, and he prevailed above them all;
24:202
one was Joshua, and he was able to do more than the six hundred thousand.
24:203
我們不要單熱心於此,就是叫我們人數眾多,乃要先熱心於此,就是叫我們蒙稱許;
Let us not be earnest only about this, that we may become many, but before this, that we may be approved;
24:204
when this has been secured, then that also follows.
24:205
沒有人願意先把房子造得寬敞,乃是先造得堅固合格,然後才造得寬敞;
No one wishes first to make a house spacious, but first strong and well-built, and then spacious;
24:206
no one lays a foundation in order to be laughed at.
24:207
Let us first seek this, and then that.
24:208
有了這一樣,那一樣也就容易了;
This being present, that also will be easy;
24:209
but that being absent, even if this be present, there is no profit at all.
24:210
For when there are those who are able to shine in the Church, quickly there will also be
24:211
But where these things are lacking, the multitude will never be of proven worth.
24:212
How many do you suppose there are in this our city who are being saved? What I am about to say is grievous, yet I will say it.
24:213
在這許多萬人當中,連一百個得救的也找不出來;
Among so many tens of thousands, it is not possible to find a hundred who are being saved;
24:214
nay, even concerning these hundred I am in doubt.
24:215
請告訴我,年輕人中有多少邪惡?年老之人中又有多少懶散?沒有一個人照著當盡的本分去照管自己的兒女;
For tell me, how much wickedness there is among the young! How much sloth among those who have grown old! No one takes such care of his own child as he ought;
24:216
no one, on beholding an aged man, has any zeal to imitate him.
24:217
For this reason the young too do not become admirable.
24:218
Do not say to me that 'We are a great throng.'
24:219
這是冷淡之人所說的話;
That is the word of lukewarm men;
24:220
and in the case of men it might with reason be said, but in the case of God, who has no need of us, it can no longer be said.
24:221
And that even there the saying is a cold one, hear.
24:222
He who has many servants, if he has them corrupted, how many dreadful things will he suffer!
24:223
論到那一個僕人也沒有的人,他的難處似乎只在於無人服事;
In the case of the man who has none, this seems to be the trouble, that he is not waited upon;
24:224
but in the case of him who has wicked servants, he destroys himself along with them, and the loss is the greater.
24:225
For it is far harder than serving oneself, to be boxing on behalf of others too, and to be taking up warfare.
24:226
我說這些話,不是要人因教會人多而稱羨它,乃是要我們殷勤使它成為純正可靠的;
These things I say, not that anyone should admire the Church for its multitude, but that we may be earnest to make it of proven worth;
24:227
使各人顧念與自己相關的肢體──不是顧念朋友,也不是顧念親屬,正如我常說的,也不是顧念鄰舍;
that each one may take thought for his own member—not for his friends, nor for his kinsfolk, as I always say, nor for his neighbours;
24:228
but so as even to draw in the strangers.
24:229
譬如說,正在獻上禱告,眾人都俯伏在地──有冷淡的青年,也有老年人;
For instance, prayer is being offered, and all lie prostrate—young men grown cold, and old men;
24:230
creatures fit rather to be swept away as refuse than to be called young men, laughing, guffawing, chattering (for indeed I have heard that this too takes place), and mocking one another as they lie upon their knees.
24:231
你這站在旁邊的,無論是青年或年長者,你若看見,就當責備他;他若不肯就範,就更嚴厲地斥責他;叫執事來,警戒他,盡你自己所能作的去作;
You who stand near, whether young or old, if you see it, rebuke him; charge him more sternly, if he will not yield; call the deacon, threaten him, do what lies in your own power;
24:232
and if he dare to do anything against you, you will assuredly have many who will take your part.
24:233
For who is so unreasonable that, when he sees you making accusation on behalf of such matters, and sees those men being accused, would not become of your party? Depart, having received your reward from the prayer.
24:234
In a master's household we judge those servants to be more well-disposed, who overlook no single vessel lying out of its place in disorder.
24:235
Tell me now, if you see in a house the silver vessel flung outside, even though you are not the one appointed over it, will you not take it up and bring it into the house? If a garment is simply cast aside, even though the care of it is not yours, even though you are an enemy of him who has charge of it, will you not, for your good will towards the master, set it in its place fittingly? So also now.
24:236
你若看見有事雜亂無序,就當重新使之井然有序;
If you see things lying in disorder, set them in order anew;
24:237
來到我這裡,我並不推辭;
come to me, I do not refuse;
24:238
告訴我,把事情說明白;
tell me, make it plain;
24:239
I cannot see everything, forgive me.
24:240
You see how much wickedness holds sway over the world.
24:241
Was it idly that I said we are a multitude of grass, a disorderly sea? I do not say that those men do such things, but that so great a sleep is poured out upon those who come in, that they do not even set these matters right.
24:242
我又看見另有一些人,在禱告進行之時,站著彼此交談;
Again I see others standing and conversing while the prayer is being made;
24:243
and the more decent among them do so not merely while the prayer is being made, but even while the priest is giving the blessing.
24:244
When will there be salvation? How shall we be able to propitiate God? If you go off to some amusement, you will see all dancing in good rhythm, and nothing neglected.
24:245
正如在一具調得極準、配置多樣的豎琴上,藉著每一部分各按其序的和諧,便奏出一種悅耳的和聲;
As, then, in a lyre perfectly tuned and variously furnished, one melodious harmony is produced out of the good order of each of its several parts;
24:246
so too here it were fitting that one concordant harmony should be produced out of all.
24:247
因為我們已成了一個教會;我們是與一個頭恰當地相連結的肢體;我們眾人組成一個身體;
For we have become one Church; we are members fitly joined together of one Head; we are all constituted one body;
24:248
if any chance part be neglected, the whole is neglected and corrupted.
24:249
Thus the disorder of the one mars the good order of the many.
24:250
And what is truly fearful is this: that here you have not come to dance in an amusement or a choral dance, and yet you stand in disorder.
24:251
Do you not know that you stand together with the angels? With them you sing, with them you offer praise, and yet you stand laughing? Is it any wonder that the thunderbolt is not let loose—not only upon those men, but also upon us? For these things are worthy of the thunderbolt.
24:252
君王親臨,鑒察全軍;
The King is present, He surveys the army;
24:253
and you, under their very eyes, stand laughing, or overlooking him who laughs? But how long shall we make accusation?
24:254
How long shall we find fault? Ought not such men—as ravagers, as destroyers, as men utterly abandoned and corrupt, laden with countless evils—to be driven out of the Church? When will these men spare their laughter, who laugh in the hour of trembling awe? When will they refrain from idle talk, who converse in the season of blessing? Do they not reverence those present? Do they not fear God? Is it not enough for us, the sloth that is in our thoughts, nor that even while praying we wander off elsewhere;
24:255
but we even bring in laughter and much loud guffawing.
24:256
難道這裡是戲院嗎?不然,我想這正是那些戲院所造成的;
For is this place a theatre? Nay, I think it is the theatres that do this;
24:257
they render the many among us hard to rein in and out of tune.
24:258
我們在這裡所建造的,在那裡就被拆毀了;
The things which we build up here are there thrown down;
24:259
and not only this, but they must needs be filled up with other defilements as well.
24:260
所發生的情形,就好比有人想要清理一塊地,卻有一泉源在其上方不住地排出污泥;
And the same thing happens as if one should wish to cleanse a plot of ground, while a spring lying above it discharges filth;
24:261
for however much you cleanse, again another flood streams in.
24:262
This is what happens here too.
24:263
For when we have cleansed those who come in from the theatres, bringing defilement, then, having gone off there again, they receive the defilement in greater measure, as though they lived on purpose for this—to give us toil—and they come back again bearing much filth in their ways, in their movements, in their words, in their laughter, in their sloth.
24:264
Then again we dig from above, as though we dug on purpose for this—that, having sent them away clean, we might once more see them gathering up the mire.
24:265
For this cause I deliver you over to God.
24:266
從今以後,我鄭重地向你們這些健全的人聲明:你們若有人看見人行為失序,若有人看見他交談──尤其是在那個時刻──卻不加告發,也不使他回轉,這對你們就要成為審判與定罪;
And henceforth I solemnly protest to you who are sound, that it shall be a judgement and a condemnation to you, if anyone, seeing a man behaving disorderly, if anyone seeing him conversing—especially at that season—shall not inform against him, nor turn him back;
24:267
你可以暫且撇下你的禱告,去責備他;
Leave your prayer, and rebuke him;
24:268
so shall you both profit him, and yourself gain.
24:269
如此我們眾人才能得救,得以進入諸天的國;
Thus shall we all be able to be saved, and to attain to the kingdom of the heavens;
24:270
which may it be granted us all to enjoy, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
