約在半夜,保羅和西拉禱告,唱詩讚美神;
But about midnight Paul and Silas, praying, were singing hymns to God;
36:2
and the prisoners were listening to them.
36:3
忽然地大震動,甚至監牢的地基都搖動了;
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken;
36:4
and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's bonds were loosed.
36:5
有什麼能與那樣的靈魂相比呢?他們被鞭打,受了許多的傷;他們受了淩辱;他們遭遇最極端的危險;他們被下在木狗裡,關在內監;
What could be equal to those souls? They were scourged, receiving many stripes; they were outraged; they were in peril of the utmost extremities; they had been thrust into the stocks, into the inner prison;
36:6
and not even so could they bear to sleep, but kept vigil the whole night through.
36:7
See how great a good is affliction! But we, even when we are on soft bedding, fearing no one, sleep the whole night.
36:8
Perhaps it was for this reason that they kept vigil—because they were in these straits.
36:9
The tyranny of sleep did not seize them, nor did pain bend them, nor did fear cast them into despair; but these very things were, much rather, what kept them awake and filled them with great gladness.
36:10
'And about midnight they were singing hymns to God,' it says, 'and the prisoners were listening to them.'
36:11
For it seemed to be strange and marvelous.
36:12
忽然地大震動,甚至監牢的地基都搖動了;
And suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken;
36:13
and immediately all the doors were opened, and everyone's bonds were loosed.
36:14
The earthquake came, so that that man might be awakened, and the doors were opened, so that he might marvel at what had happened.
36:15
這些事,眾囚犯並沒有看見;
These things the prisoners did not see;
36:16
And the jailer, being roused from sleep and seeing the prison doors opened, drew his sword and was about to kill himself, supposing that the prisoners had escaped.
36:17
But Paul called out with a loud voice, saying:
36:18
Do yourself no harm.
36:19
Rather he marvelled at the loving-kindness of Paul,
36:20
and was astounded at his courage: that, though able to flee, he did not flee, and that he hindered him from the slaughter.
36:21
Having called for lights he rushed in, and being trembling he fell down before Paul and Silas; and bringing them out, he said:
36:22
Sirs, what must I do to be saved? Do you see how the wonder laid hold of him? And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, you and your household.
36:23
And they spoke to him the word of the Lord, and to all who were in his house.
36:24
By speaking to him immediately they displayed their loving-kindness toward him.
36:25
And taking them at that very hour of the night, he washed them from their stripes.
36:26
And he himself was baptized, and all who belonged to him, immediately.
36:27
And bringing them up into his house, he set a table before them, and rejoiced with all his household, having believed in God.
36:28
He washed them, as if requiting the grace, and honouring them by what he did.
36:29
And when it was day, the magistrates sent the sergeants, saying:
36:30
Release those men.
36:31
Perhaps the magistrates had learned what had happened, and did not dare to release them on their own authority.
36:32
And the jailer reported these words to Paul, saying that The magistrates have sent to have you released.
36:33
Now therefore depart, and go in peace.
36:34
But Paul said to them:
36:35
They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned, men who are Romans, and cast us into prison.
36:36
如今要私下攆我們出去麼?斷乎不可;
And now do they thrust us out secretly? No indeed;
36:37
but let them come themselves and bring us out.
36:38
差役把這話回報官長;
And the sergeants reported these words to the magistrates;
36:39
and they were afraid when they heard that they were Romans.
36:40
And they came and besought them, and bringing them out asked them to depart from the city.
36:41
And going out of the prison, they entered into the house of Lydia; and when they had seen the brethren, they comforted them and departed.
36:42
雖然官長已下了命令,保羅卻不出去;
Though the magistrates had given the order, Paul does not go out;
36:43
或許是為著呂底亞和其餘的弟兄們的緣故;
perhaps for Lydia's sake, and for the other brethren;
36:44
or also putting them in fear, that they might not be thought to have begged to be released, and that he might set the others too in boldness.
36:45
Threefold, beloved, was the charge: that they were both Romans, and uncondemned, and were cast into prison publicly.
36:46
You see that they also contrived many human measures.
36:47
Let us compare these nights with that night—those nights where there are revellings and drunkenness and wantonness, where sleep differs in nothing from death, where sleeplessness is more grievous than sleep.
36:48
因為有人昏睡而毫無知覺,有人卻可憐又悲慘地醒著,編織詭計,為錢財憂慮,竭力謀算如何報復那些虧待他們的人,籌謀仇恨,為白日搜集辱罵的言語;
For some sleep insensibly, while others keep awake pitiably and wretchedly, stitching together deceits, anxious over money, striving how to take vengeance on those who have wronged them, meditating enmity, gathering up insulting words for the daytime;
36:49
thus they stir up the fire of wrath, working things unbearable.
36:50
Consider how Peter slept.
36:51
那事是出於神的安排;
That happened by a dispensation;
36:52
因為天使來了,而所發生的事不該讓任何人看見;
for the angel came, and no one ought to see what was taking place;
36:53
and this again was well, that the jailer might be prevented from making away with himself.
36:54
為何沒有別的神蹟發生呢?因為惟有這事最能吸引並說服他,何況若非如此,他自己也要陷於危險;
And why did no other sign occur? Because this above all was able to draw and persuade him, seeing that he himself would have been in danger had it not happened;
36:55
for wonders do not so lay hold of us as the things that come for our own salvation.
36:56
That the earthquake might not seem to have come of itself, this too followed upon it, bearing witness to it.
36:57
for they did nothing for display, but for salvation.
36:58
那禁卒並不是惡人;
The jailer was not wicked;
36:59
he cast them into the inner prison, having received such a command, not of his own will.
36:60
And why did not Paul cry out before this? The man was full of tumult and confusion, and would not have received it.
36:61
For this reason, when he saw himself about to make away with himself, Paul anticipates and cries out, saying:
36:62
For this reason too: Having called for lights he rushed in, and fell down before Paul, it says, and before Silas.
36:63
The keeper falls at the feet of the prisoner.
36:64
And he brings them out and says:
36:65
Sirs, what must I do to be saved? For what did he say? See him: not content merely because he had been saved thereby, but astounded at the power.
36:66
你看那裡發生了甚麼,這裡又發生了甚麼?在那裡,一個使女從邪靈得了釋放,他們卻因保羅趕出那鬼,把他們下在監裡;
Do you see what happened there, and what here? There a servant-girl was freed from a spirit, and they cast them into prison because they had freed her from the demon;
36:67
在這裡,他們不過顯出敞開的門,這門卻開了他心門,解開了雙重的捆鎖,點燃了那光;
here they merely showed doors opened, and it opened the doors of his heart, loosed a twofold bond, kindled that light;
36:68
for the light in his heart shone forth.
36:69
And he rushed in and fell down, and does not ask, How did this happen? What has happened? but immediately says:
36:70
What must I do to be saved? What then does Paul say?
36:71
Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved, he says, you and your household.
36:72
This above all draws men, that his household too should be saved.
36:73
And they spoke to him the word, and to all who were in his house.
36:74
他洗了他們,自己也受了洗;
He washed them, and was himself washed;
36:75
他洗淨他們的傷痕,自己卻從罪中得了洗淨;
them he washed from their stripes, but he himself was washed from his sins;
36:76
and yet there was nothing, but words only and good hopes.
36:77
This was a sign that he had believed, that he was forgiven all his sins.
36:78
What is worse than a jailer? what more cruel? what more savage? And yet with great honour he received them.
36:79
Not because he had been saved did he rejoice, but Having believed in God.
36:80
Believe, he says, on the Lord.
36:81
For this reason it says, Having believed in God, that he might not seem to be released as a condemned man and as one who had sinned.
36:82
They have beaten us publicly, uncondemned men, and cast us into prison, that the matter might belong not only to grace but also to themselves.
36:83
See how grace dispenses matters diversely, how the one went out and how this one, though both were apostles.
36:84
They are afraid because they are Romans, not because they had cast them in unjustly.
36:85
And they asked them to depart from the city.
36:86
But they, coming to Lydia and confirming her, thus departed.
36:87
For it was not right to leave their hostess in anguish and anxiety.
36:88
They went out, not because they yielded to those men, but because they were hastening to the work of preaching, the city having been sufficiently instructed through the miracle.
36:89
For it was fitting that they should not remain there any longer.
36:90
For the miracle appears the greater when those who wrought it have departed, since it then proclaims itself all the more loudly.
36:91
For the faith of the jailer served in place of a voice.
36:92
What is equal to this? He who is bound both binds and looses—being himself bound, he looses a double bond.
36:93
By being bound, he loosed the one who had bound him.
36:94
他說:「如今你們出去,平平安安地走吧」;
'Now therefore,' he says, 'go out and depart in peace';
36:95
that is, in safety, fearing nothing.
36:96
And in another way too they wish him also to be out of danger, that afterward he might not be brought under accusation.
36:97
他們並不說:「他們雖見我們行了神蹟,卻打了我們,把我們下在監裡」;
And they do not say, 'They beat us and cast us into prison, though we had wrought miracles';
36:98
因為他們對這些事也並不看重;
for they gave no heed to these things either;
36:99
but that which was most able to shake their minds—'We are men uncondemned,' he says, 'and Romans.'
36:100
Let us ever keep this prisoner in remembrance, not the miracle.
36:101
希臘人要怎麼說呢——一個被囚的人怎能說服獄卒?有人說:「那被說服的又是誰呢?不過是一個卑污可憐、毫無心竅、滿身惡行、又容易受人擺佈的人罷了。」他們甚至還提出這些反駁;
What will the Greeks say—how a prisoner persuaded the jailer? 'And who was it,' one says, 'that ought to have been persuaded—some vile and wretched man without understanding, laden with countless evils and easily led astray?' They bring forward yet these objections too;
36:102
因為信的人是誰呢——豈不是一個硝皮匠、一個賣紫色布的婦人、一個太監、一個獄卒、一些奴僕和婦女嗎?可是當我們也舉出那些有地位的人——百夫長、方伯、從那時直到如今的人、就是那些掌權者、甚至君王本身——他們還能說什麼呢?然而我要說一件比這更大的事;
For who believed—was it not a tanner, a seller of purple, a eunuch, a jailer, slaves and women? What then will they be able to say when we bring forward also men of rank—the centurion, the proconsul, those from that time until now, the very rulers, the emperors themselves? But I say something else greater than this;
36:103
let us consider these very lowly ones.
36:104
有人說:「這有什麼可希奇的呢?」其實這正是可希奇之處;
'And where is the wonder in that?' one says. Why, this is precisely the wonder;
36:105
因為若有人在尋常的事上被說服,那沒有什麼可希奇的;
for if a man is persuaded concerning ordinary matters, there is nothing wonderful in it;
36:106
but when one discourses to lowly men about resurrection, about the kingdom of heaven, about a life of philosophy, and persuades them, it will be more wonderful than if he had persuaded the wise.
36:107
因為當毫無危險而有人被說服時,他們或可合理地把這歸咎於愚昧;
For when there is no danger and one persuades, they may fairly allege folly as the cause;
36:108
but when one says to the slave, according to your own supposition, 'If you are persuaded by me, you will be in peril, you will have all men as enemies, you must die and suffer countless evils,' and yet in this way wins that man's soul, this is no longer a mark of folly.
36:109
因為若這些道理帶有某種享樂,人這樣說倒還有理;
For if the doctrines held out some pleasure, one might reasonably say this;
36:110
but if what even philosophers would not have chosen to learn, this the slave learns—the miracle is the greater.
36:111
你們若願意,就讓我們把那硝皮匠本人請到當中來,看看彼得向他講了什麼;
And if you please, let us bring the tanner himself into the midst, and see what Peter discoursed to him;
36:112
or if you will, this very jailer.
36:113
那麼保羅對他說了什麼呢?他說,基督已經復活了;死人要復活;有一個國度;
What then did Paul say to him? That Christ is risen, he says; that there is a resurrection of the dead; that there is a kingdom;
36:114
and he persuaded him easily, seeing he was easily led.
36:115
What then? Did he say nothing about conduct—that one must be temperate, that one must master money, that one must not be cruel, that one must give of his own to others? Surely the being persuaded of these things too was no mark of folly, but rather of a great soul.
36:116
就算他們接受那些道理是出於愚昧罷;
For grant that they received the doctrines rather out of folly;
36:117
but to embrace so philosophic a life—of what folly was that a mark!
36:118
So that the more foolish the one persuaded may be, if yet he is persuaded of those very things which not even philosophers were able to persuade the philosophers of, the greater the miracle becomes—and most of all when even women and slaves are persuaded, and display in their deeds those very things of which the Platos and all those men were unable to persuade a single soul.
36:119
And why do I say they could not persuade anyone? They could not even persuade themselves.
36:120
因為柏拉圖教訓人不可輕視錢財,自己卻置辦了那麼多的財富、大量的錢財、金戒指和金杯;
For that one ought not to despise money, Plato taught, while himself acquiring so great abundance and a multitude of riches, gold rings and bowls;
36:121
而蘇格拉底則向他們顯明,人不可輕看眾人所給的虛榮——因為無論他在這事上如何高談哲理;
and that one ought not to despise the glory that comes from the many, Socrates shows them—for however much he may play the philosopher about this;
36:122
for he did everything with a view to glory.
36:123
And if indeed you were versed in that man's writings, I would raise a long discourse concerning these matters, and would show how great was the dissimulation among them—if indeed one must be persuaded by the things his disciple says, and how all his writings take vainglory as their foundation.
36:124
But let us leave those men, and discourse with ourselves.
36:125
For besides what has been said, this too may be observed—that they were persuaded of these things even amid dangers.
36:126
Let us therefore not be shameless, but let us call to mind that night, the stocks, the hymns; and let us also be zealous to do this, and we shall open for ourselves, not a prison, but heaven.
36:127
If we pray, we too shall be able to open heaven.
36:128
Elijah both shut and opened heaven by prayer.
36:129
'Whatsoever ye shall bind on earth,' He says, 'shall be bound in heaven.'
36:130
Let us pray by night, and we shall loose these bonds.
36:131
至於禱告能解除罪愆,且讓那寡婦來說服我們,讓那在夜半三更堅持不懈叩門的朋友來說服我們,讓哥尼流來說服我們;
For that prayers loose sins, let the widow persuade us, let that friend persuade us who at an untimely hour of the night persisted and knocked, let Cornelius persuade us;
36:132
因為經上說:「你的禱告和你的賙濟,已經上達在神面前蒙記念了」;
'For thy prayers,' he says, 'and thine alms are come up as a memorial before God';
36:133
let Paul persuade us, saying:
36:134
'She that is a widow indeed, and left alone, hath set her hope on God, and continueth in supplications night and day.'
36:135
If he says these things of a widow, a weak woman, how much more of men.
36:136
我從前已向你們講過,如今還要再說;
And I have already discoursed to you, and now will say it again;
36:137
你即使不能作許多禱告,只要儆醒地作一個,就夠了;
even if you do not offer many prayers, offer one with watchfulness, and it suffices;
36:138
and if not at midnight, then at least toward the dawn.
36:139
要顯明這夜晚不單屬於身體,也屬於靈魂;
Show that the night belongs not to the body only, but to the soul as well;
36:140
不要容它閒懶地過去,倒要把這份回報獻給主;
do not allow it to pass by idly, but render to the Master this recompense;
36:141
or rather, it comes round to your own advantage.
36:142
Tell me now, if we should fall into some grievous difficulty, whom do we not entreat? and if we quickly obtain our request, we breathe again.
36:143
有誰能使你所懇求的那位,反倒因你懇求祂而向你存著感謝之心呢?有誰能使你不必四處奔走、尋找可懇求的對象,卻能尋得一位隨時待命的呢?使你不必倚靠別人,好藉著他們去提出請求呢?有什麼比這更大呢?因為正是在我們不需要別人的時候,祂才最施行拯救;
Who could grant you that the one you entreat should be ready to be grateful to you because you entreat Him? Who could grant you not to have to go about seeking whom you may entreat, but to find Him ready at hand—not to need others, that through them you may make your request? What is greater than this? For He does most of all at that time when we have no need of others;
36:144
just as a true friend most of all reproaches us as not trusting his friendship, whenever we make use of others who plead with him on our behalf.
36:145
我們對待那些懇求我們的人,也是如此;
So we too act toward those who entreat us;
36:146
we show them favor most of all when they come to us of themselves, and not through others.
36:147
'What then,' one says, 'if I have given offense?' Cease from offending and weep, and so draw near, and you will quickly make Him gracious toward you concerning your former misdeeds.
36:148
你只要說:「我得罪了祢」;
Only say, 'I have offended';
36:149
say it from your soul and from a genuine mind, and all is loosed.
36:150
You do not so desire to have your sins forgiven, as He Himself desires to forgive you your transgressions.
36:151
至於你並不真渴望這事,你只要想想:你連儆醒守夜都不肯,也不肯捨棄錢財;
For that you do not desire it, consider that you do not even submit to keep vigil, nor do you part with money;
36:152
but He, in order to forgive us our sins, did not spare His Only-begotten, His true Son, who shares His throne.
36:153
Do you see that He rather desires to forgive you your transgressions? Let us then not be slothful, nor put it off.
36:154
祂是慈愛人、又是良善的;
He is loving toward mankind and good;
36:155
我們只要給祂一個機會——而這樣做,也不過是為叫我們自己不至於成為無用之人;因為即便沒有這個,祂原本也會釋放我們的;
only let us give Him an occasion—and that, so that we may not become useless; since even apart from this He would have set us free;
36:156
然而正如我們對待自己家中的僕人時,會編造並想出無數的藉口;
but just as we, in dealing with our own household servants, devise and contrive countless pretexts;
36:157
so He too acts for the sake of our salvation.
36:158
Let us come before His presence with confession, for He is kind and gentle.
36:159
But if you do not call upon Him in truth, nor are willing to say from the heart, 'Forgive,' but only with the lips—what will He do? What does it mean to call upon Him in truth? To do so with deliberate resolve, with eagerness, with a sincere and undivided mind.
36:160
It is like what they say of perfumes: it is genuine, it has nothing adulterated in it.
36:161
He who truly calls upon Him, and who truly has need of Him, waits upon Him continually, and does not depart until he receives.
36:162
But he who merely goes through the motions as a formality, and in this very act only fulfills a rule, does not call upon Him in truth.
36:163
Whoever you may be, do not merely say, 'I am a sinner,' but strive also to rid yourself of this reputation.
36:164
If you do not strive, you feel no pain over it.
36:165
Who, saying 'I am sick,' does not do everything in order to be delivered? Prayer is a mighty weapon.
36:166
'If you then,' He says, 'know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more shall your Father?' Why are you unwilling to draw near? He loves you; He is able beyond all others.
36:167
He both wills and is able; what then hinders? Nothing.
36:168
Therefore let us draw near with faith; let us draw near, offering the gifts which He desires—the forgetting of wrongs, kindness, meekness.
36:169
Even if you are a sinner, you shall with boldness demand from Him the pardon of your sins, being able to show that this very thing has been done in you.
36:170
But if you are righteous, and yet do not possess this—the forgetting of wrongs—you have gained nothing.
36:171
It is impossible that a man who has forgiven his neighbor should not obtain a full and exact forgiveness for himself.
36:172
For God is incomparably more loving toward mankind than we are.
36:173
What do you say? If you say, 'I was wronged, I restrained my anger, I endured the assault of wrath for the sake of Your command,' will He not also forgive? Assuredly He will forgive.
36:174
Therefore let us cleanse our soul of the remembrance of wrongs.
36:175
This suffices for us to be heard; and let us pray with watchfulness and with much perseverance, that having enjoyed His abundant loving-kindness, we may be counted worthy of the good things promised, by the grace and loving-kindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, to the Father together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
