Men of Israel, hear these my words.
6:2
這話並非奉承;
The saying is no flattery;
6:3
but since he had reproved them severely, he now gives them respite, and seasonably calls David to remembrance.
6:4
他又從一段引言開始;
And again he begins from a preamble;
6:5
so that they might not be thrown into a tumult, since he was about to remind them of Jesus.
6:6
For up to that point they would not have been troubled at hearing of the prophet, but the name of Jesus would at once have stood in their way.
6:7
And he did not say, Be persuaded, but, Hear — which was less burdensome.
6:8
And observe how he says nothing lofty, but begins from things exceedingly lowly.
6:9
Jesus, he says, the Nazarene.
6:10
At once he mentions the native place, which seemed to be of no account.
6:11
And meanwhile he says nothing great concerning Him, nor such as one might say concerning a prophet.
6:12
Jesus, he says, the Nazarene, a man approved of God among you.
6:13
See what a great thing this was, to say that He was sent from God.
6:14
For this both he himself, and John, and the Apostles were at pains to show, up and down.
6:15
For hear John saying:
6:16
He said to me, Upon whomsoever you see the Spirit descending and remaining on Him, this is He.
6:17
And Christ Himself does this even in exceeding measure, saying:
6:18
I came not of Myself; He sent Me.
6:19
And everywhere throughout the Scriptures this above all is the thing earnestly pursued.
6:20
Therefore this saint too, the chief of the blessed choir, the lover of Christ, the ardent disciple, he to whom the keys of the heavens were entrusted, who received the spiritual revelation — having subdued them with fear, and shown them to be counted worthy of great things, and having made them ready to believe, then also discourses concerning Him.
6:21
Wondrous! What a bold thing he dared, to say in the midst of the murderers that He rose again!
6:22
And he does not say that He rose again immediately, but that He has come from God to you.
6:23
And this is plain from the things which He did.
6:24
He no longer says that He Himself, but that through Him God did these things, so that by his moderation he might the more draw them to Him; and he calls them as witnesses, and says:
6:25
A man approved of God among you by mighty works and wonders and signs, which God did through Him in the midst of you, as you yourselves also know.
6:26
接著,他觸及了他們那可憎的行為,你看他如何設法使他們脫離這控告;
Then, having fallen upon that accursed deed of theirs, see how he tries to release them from the charge;
6:27
for even though it had been foreordained, nevertheless they were murderers.
6:28
Him, he says, delivered up by the determinate counsel and foreknowledge of God,
6:29
you took, and by the hands of lawless men nailed up and slew.
6:30
He says almost the very same words as Joseph, which that one too spoke to his brothers:
6:31
Fear not; for it was not you that sold me hither, but God sent me here.
6:32
接著,他既說這是神的旨意,惟恐他們說「這樣看來我們行這事倒是對的」,便藉著所補充的話責問他們,說:「你們借著無法之人的手把祂釘死了。」他在此暗指猶大;
Then, having said that it was the counsel of God — lest they should say, So then we did this rightly — he brings them to account through what he added, By the hands of lawless men nailing Him up you slew. Here he hints at Judas;
6:33
and at the same time he shows them that it was not of their own strength, unless He too had permitted it and God had given Him up.
6:34
For this is the meaning of Delivered up.
6:35
他就這樣把全部的控告都轉到出賣者猶大的頭上;
Thus he brought the whole accusation round upon the head of Judas, the one who had betrayed Him;
6:36
for he it was that betrayed Him with the kiss.
6:37
Either, then, it is concerning this one that he says, By the hands of lawless men, or he speaks of the soldiers, making plain that You did not simply slay Him, but By the hands of lawless men.
6:38
And behold how everywhere they are earnest to have the Passion confessed first of all.
6:39
But since the matter of the resurrection was a great thing, he for the time shades it over, and thus in a manner places it in the middle of his discourse.
6:40
For those things were acknowledged, namely the cross and the death; but the resurrection was not yet so.
6:41
Wherefore afterwards he speaks concerning it, adding:
6:42
'Whom God raised up, having loosed the pangs of death, because it was not possible that He should be held by it.'
6:43
Here he intimated something great and lofty.
6:44
因為「不能」一語,也表明死亡拘禁祂,乃是出於祂自己的允准;
For the expression 'It was not possible' shows also that it was by His own consent that death held Him;
6:45
and that death itself, in holding Him, was in travail-pangs, and suffered grievously.
6:46
因為聖經處處慣以「死亡的產難之痛」稱呼危難;
For everywhere Scripture is wont to call danger 'the pang of death';
6:47
and that He rose in such wise as never to die again.
6:48
Or else, his saying 'Because it was not possible that He should be held by it' is meant to show that His resurrection was not like that of all the rest.
6:49
Then, before their minds could conceive anything, he set David before them, sweeping away every human reasoning.
6:50
'For David,' says he, 'speaks concerning Him.'
6:51
且看,這見證又是何等卑微;
And observe how, once again, the testimony is lowly;
6:52
for this very reason he took it up again from the beginning, from the lowlier expressions, that he might show that His death was no cause for grief.
6:53
'I foresaw the Lord,' he says, 'always before my face, for He is at my right hand, that I should not be shaken;'
6:54
'because Thou wilt not leave my soul in Hades.'
6:55
Then, having completed the testimony of the prophet, he adds:
6:56
Whenever he is about to say something great, he uses this preamble, thereby rousing them and winning them to himself.
6:57
'I may say to you,' he declares, 'with boldness concerning the patriarch David.'
6:58
Where it did no harm, he condescends to them.
6:59
正因這緣故,他也沒有說:「這些話是指著基督說的,不是指著大衛說的」;
For this very reason also he did not say, 'These things are spoken concerning Christ, not concerning David';
6:60
most prudently: by the great honour shown toward the blessed David he puts them to shame; and as for what was acknowledged and yet might seem a bold thing to have said, he deprecates their displeasure by the praises he gently bestows.
6:61
Wherefore neither does he say simply 'concerning David,' but 'concerning the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried.'
6:62
He no longer says, 'and did not rise again,' but in another way sets forth the same fact directly, saying:
6:63
'And his tomb is with us unto this day.'
6:64
Then, having established what he wished, not even so did he come to Christ, but again with praises of David:
6:65
'Being therefore a prophet, and knowing that God had sworn to him with an oath.'
6:66
他說這些話,是要他們至少因著對大衛的敬重和他後裔的緣故,接受關乎復活的道;
This he says, that at least for the honour paid to David and for his lineage they might receive the word concerning the resurrection;
6:67
implying that, were this not so, both the prophecy and the honour paid to themselves would suffer harm.
6:68
'And knowing,' says he, 'that God had sworn to him with an oath.'
6:69
He did not say simply 'promised,' but, what was more, 'swore with an oath, that of the fruit of his loins according to the flesh He would raise up the Christ, to sit upon his throne.'
6:70
Observe how once again he intimated the lofty truth.
6:71
For since he had calmed them by his words, taking courage he inserted this saying of the prophet, and discourses concerning the resurrection:
6:72
'That neither was His soul left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption.'
6:73
For he shows that His resurrection was not like that of the others.
6:74
For death held Him indeed, yet did not then work its own work upon Him.
6:75
他提到那罪行時加以遮掩,卻沒有加上刑罰之言;
And the sin he mentioned, but with a veil over it; the punishment, however, he did not add;
6:76
他只表明他們殺了祂;
he showed only that they had slain Him;
6:77
and he comes to the sign that is God's.
6:78
But when it is proved that he who was slain was righteous, and a friend of God, then even if you keep silence about the punishment, the one who has sinned will condemn himself all the more.
6:79
Everything, then, he ascribes to the Father, that they might receive the things spoken.
6:80
Then he adduces the 'not possible' from the prophecy:
6:81
Let us then review from the beginning what has been said.
6:82
'Jesus of Nazareth,' says he, 'a man demonstrated of God unto you;'
6:83
that is, not one in dispute, but one demonstrated by His works.
6:84
So also Nicodemus said:
6:85
'No man can do these signs which Thou doest.'
6:86
'By mighty works,' he says, 'and wonders and signs, which God wrought through Him in the midst of you.'
6:87
So then not in secret, if it was in the midst of you.
6:88
First he begins from the things known to them, and then proceeds to the things not evident.
6:89
Then, by saying 'by the counsel of God,' he shows that it was not they who had the power, and that what was done was a thing of wisdom and a divine dispensation, seeing it was from God.
6:90
And the offensive point he passed over quickly.
6:91
For everywhere their earnest endeavour is to show that He died.
6:92
'Even if you should deny it,' says he, 'they will bear witness.'
6:93
But He who gives trouble to death itself, much more would He to those who crucified Him;
6:94
yet he says nothing of the kind, such as that He could have destroyed you; he merely intimated it, and no more.
6:95
Meanwhile we also learn, through what has been said, what it is 'to hold fast.'
6:96
For he that is in travail-pangs does not hold fast what he holds, nor acts, but suffers, and hastens to cast it forth.
6:97
'For David says concerning Him' — that you may not draw what is said to the prophet himself.
6:98
Do you see how he now interprets the prophecy and lays it bare, showing how He sat upon his throne? For the kingdom according to the Spirit is in the heavens.
6:99
Observe how, together with the resurrection, he also declared the kingdom in His rising again.
6:100
他顯明先知有不得不然之勢;
He shows that the prophet was under necessity;
6:101
for the prophecy was concerning Him.
6:102
Why did he not say, 'concerning His kingdom,'
6:103
but 'concerning His resurrection'? This was a great thing.
6:104
And how did He sit upon his throne? As reigning over the Jews.
6:105
And if over the Jews, much more over those who crucified Him.
6:106
'For His flesh,' he says, 'did not see corruption.'
6:107
This seems indeed to be less than the resurrection, yet it is the same thing.
6:108
'This Jesus hath God raised up.'
6:109
Observe how he does not call Him by any other name.
6:110
Of which we all are witnesses.
6:111
Having therefore been exalted by the right hand of God.
6:112
他再一次歸向父,儘管單說前一點本已足夠;
Again he takes refuge in the Father, though it would have sufficed to have stated the former point;
6:113
but he knows how great a thing this is.
6:114
Here too he hinted at the Ascension, and that He is in the heavens; yet not even this does he say openly.
6:115
Having received, he says, the promise of the Holy Spirit.
6:116
請看,他起初並未說是祂親自將聖靈降下,而是說父降下的;
Observe how, at the beginning, he did not say that He Himself had sent it down, but the Father;
6:117
但當他提及祂的神蹟,以及猶太人加害於祂的事,並論及復活之後,他終於放膽,接著引入關於這些事的言論,再一次藉著兩種感官將他們引為見證;
but when he had made mention of His signs and of the things done to Him by the Jews, and had discoursed concerning the Resurrection, then at length, taking courage, he brings in the discourse about these matters as well, again producing them as witnesses through both of the senses;
6:118
and while he mentions the Resurrection continually, of their audacity he speaks but once, so as not to bear too heavily upon them.
6:119
Having received, he says, the promise of the Holy Spirit.
6:120
But I think that here he calls 'promise' that which was given before the Passion.
6:121
Observe how he now makes the whole to be His own work, secretly accomplishing a great point.
6:122
For if He Himself poured it out, it is concerning Him that the prophet has spoken above:
6:123
In the last days I will pour out of My Spirit upon My menservants and upon My maidservants, and I will show wonders in the heaven above.
6:124
Observe what things he inserts in a hidden manner.
6:125
But since it was a great thing, he again veils it by the fact that He received it from the Father.
6:126
他述說了已成就的美善之事,就是那些神蹟;
He told the good things that had come to pass, the signs;
6:127
他說祂是君王;
he said that He is King;
6:128
he said that He Himself gives the Spirit.
6:129
For whatever a man may say, if it does not end in something profitable, he speaks in vain.
6:130
Just as John also does, saying, He shall baptize you with the Holy Spirit.
6:131
And he shows that the Cross not only did not diminish Him, but even rendered Him more illustrious, seeing that of old God had promised it to Him, but then He gave it.
6:132
Or, the promise, he says, which He promised to us.
6:133
So he foreknew it would come to pass, and after the Cross He bestowed on us even greater things.
6:134
在此他彰顯了那尊貴的地位;
Here he sets forth the dignity;
6:135
and that it was not simply, but even with abundance.
6:136
Wherefore also, making this very thing plain, he adds what follows.
6:137
因為從此以後,在聖靈賜下之後,他便放膽論及升入諸天之事;
For henceforth, with confidence, after the giving of the Spirit, he discourses also concerning the Ascension into the heavens;
6:138
and not simply, but again bringing forward the witness, and reminding them of him concerning whom Christ had spoken.
6:139
For David, he says, did not ascend into the heavens.
6:140
Here he no longer harangues with reserve, having the confidence derived from what has been said, nor does he say:
6:141
「或者有人會說」,也不用任何這一類的緩和之辭;
'One might say,' nor any such qualifications;
6:142
but he says openly, The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand, until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.
6:143
And if He is David's Lord, much more is He theirs.
6:144
Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet.
6:145
Here also he inspired great fear, just as at the beginning he showed what things He works for His friends, what things for His enemies.
6:146
And again he ascribes the dominion to the Father, that it may not be disbelieved.
6:147
Since therefore he had uttered great things, again he brings the discourse down to lowly matters.
6:148
他說:所以,以色列全家當確實地知道;
Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly, he says;
6:149
that is, Do not dispute, nor be in doubt.
6:150
Then also, in an authoritative manner, henceforth:
6:151
That God has made Him both Lord and Christ.
6:152
This he recorded from David and from the Psalm.
6:153
For when he ought to have said, Let all the house of Israel therefore know assuredly that He sits at the right hand—which was a great thing—leaving this aside, he brings in another statement, saying something far more lowly: He made, that is, He appointed.
6:154
So that here there is nothing about essence, but all that he says is about this.
6:155
This Jesus, whom you crucified.
6:156
Well did he here bring it to a close, shaking their minds.
6:157
For when he had shown how great He is, then at length he also laid bare their audacity, so as to make it appear greater and to seize them with fear.
6:158
For men are not so much led on by benefits as they are brought to their senses by fear.
6:159
然而那些可敬、偉大、蒙神所愛的人,卻不需要這些;
But the admirable and great, those who are dear to God, need none of these things;
6:160
for he took no account of kingdom, nor of hell.
6:161
This is to love Christ; this is not to be a hireling, nor to regard the matter as traffic and huckstering, but to be truly virtuous, and to do all things because it is dear to God.
6:162
那麼,當我們既欠了如此重大的債,卻連小販為求利益的那種殷勤都沒有,去追求天國,我們豈不該流多少眼淚呢?祂向我們應許了如此眾多的事,我們竟連這樣也不聽從嗎?還有什麼能與這樣的敵意相比呢?然而那些為錢財發狂的人,即或遇見的是仇敵、是奴僕、是最兇惡的對頭、是徹頭徹尾的壞人,只要一指望能藉他們得著錢財,就無所不作,又諂媚、又逢迎、又甘作奴僕,並看他們比眾人更尊貴,為要從他們得著些什麼;
Of how many tears then are we worthy, when, owing so great a measure, we do not pursue the kingdom of heaven even as hucksters would? He promises us so many things, and not even so do we listen? What could be equal to this enmity? And yet those who are mad after money, though they find men to be enemies, or slaves, or utterly hostile, or thoroughly wicked, provided only they expect that through them they will be able to get money, do all things, and flatter, and pay court, and become slaves, and count them more venerable than all men, that they may receive something from them;
6:163
for the hope of money does not allow them to think of any of these things.
6:164
然而國度所具的力量,竟不及錢財那樣大——不,連極小的一分之力都不及;
But the kingdom has not prevailed as much as money has—nay, not even the smallest fraction as much;
6:165
and yet it is no ordinary person who promises it, but One incomparably greater even than the kingdom itself.
6:166
But when both that which is promised is a kingdom, and God is He who gives it, it is a great thing even to receive from such a One.
6:167
但如今所發生的,就好比一位君王,在無數其他的恩惠之後,願意立我們為他的後嗣,與他兒子同作後嗣,卻反遭藐視;
But now the same thing happens as if a king, wishing to make us his heirs and joint-heirs with his son, after countless other benefits, should be despised;
6:168
while a robber-chief, who has done countless mischiefs both to us and to our parents, and is laden with countless evils, and has brought shame upon both our glory and our salvation, should be worshipped by us for merely showing a single obol.
6:169
神應許了國度,卻遭藐視;
God promises a kingdom, and is despised;
6:170
the devil procures hell, and is honored.
6:171
This one is God, that one is the devil.
6:172
But let us look at the difference of their commands.
6:173
因為即使這一切都不是這樣——即使這一位不是神,那一個不是魔鬼;
For if none of these things were so—if this One were not God, and that one the devil;
6:174
即使這一位不是帶來國度,那一個不是帶來地獄;
nor did this One procure a kingdom, and that one hell;
6:175
難道單單這些命令的本身性質,還不足以說服我們去歸附這一位嗎?那麼他們各自吩咐些什麼呢?那一個吩咐使人蒙羞之事,這一位吩咐使人得榮耀之事;
would not the very nature of the commands themselves be sufficient to persuade us to attach ourselves to this One? What then does each of them enjoin? That one, the things that bring shame; this One, the things that make men glorious;
6:176
that one, the things that involve men in countless calamities and disgraces; this One, the things that bring much repose.
6:177
This One says, Learn of Me, that
6:178
我心裡柔和謙卑,這樣你們心裡就必得享安息;
I am meek and lowly in heart, and you shall find rest for your souls;
6:179
That one says, 'Be savage and untamed, quick-tempered and prone to wrath, and a wild beast rather than a man.'
6:180
Let us then consider which is the more profitable, and which the more beneficial.
6:181
But not this alone; rather, consider that the one giving these commands is the devil.
6:182
For the more that is made clear, the greater again will be the prizes of victory.
6:183
For he is not a guardian who imposes easy things, but one who imposes what is profitable.
6:184
既然父親也吩咐沉重的事,主人同樣如此對待僕人;
Since fathers too impose burdensome things, and masters likewise upon their servants;
6:185
然而正因如此,前者是父親,後者是主人;
but for this very reason the ones are fathers, and the others masters;
6:186
while those others are enslavers and destroyers and everything to the contrary.
6:187
Moreover, that it also holds pleasure is clear from this.
6:188
For in what state do you suppose the quick-tempered man to be, and in what the long-suffering and gentle? Is not the soul of the latter like some solitude possessing great tranquillity;
6:189
whereas the soul of the former is like a marketplace and a tumult, where there is much shouting of attendants, of camels and mules
6:190
還有驢子,大聲向來往的人呼喊,免得被踐踏。這樣之人的靈魂,豈不又像城中鬧市,此刻這邊銀匠、那邊銅匠的響聲此起彼落,有的欺凌人,有的被欺凌?但那另一位的靈魂,卻像某座山巔,有輕柔的微風,承受純淨的日光,湧出泉源清澈的流水,綻放百花諸般的華美,如同春日的草場與樂園,繁茂著花草與奔流的水泉;
and asses, crying out loudly to passers-by lest they be trampled? Is not the soul of such a man again like the very middle of cities, where now from this side rises the great noise of silversmiths, now from that of coppersmiths, and some do injury while others are injured? But the soul of the other is like some mountain peak, having a thin breeze, receiving the pure sunbeam, pouring forth the clear streams of its springs, and putting forth the many graces of its flowers, like the meadows and gardens of spring, luxuriant with plants and blossoms and flowing waters;
6:191
and if any sound should arise, it is clear and shrill, pouring much pleasure over those who hear.
6:192
或是歌唱的鳥雀棲於樹梢的葉上,蟬、夜鶯與燕子和諧地合奏出一曲樂音;
For either songbirds perch on the topmost leaves of the trees, and cicadas and nightingales and swallows together produce one harmonious music;
6:193
或是西風輕柔地吹拂樹葉,模仿那颯颯作響的松柏,也常常摹擬天鵝的鳴聲;
or the west wind, gently falling upon the leaves of the trees, imitates the pines and firs whistling, and often the swans;
6:194
or a meadow, putting forth roses and lilies inclined toward one another and gleaming dark-blue, like a dark sea gently rippling, presents itself to view.
6:195
Rather, one might find many images.
6:196
因為當人注視玫瑰時,必以為看見了彩虹;
For when one looks upon the roses, he will think he beholds the rainbow;
6:197
當注視紫羅蘭時,便如看見蕩漾的大海;
and when upon the violets, a rippling sea;
6:198
and when upon the lilies, the heaven.
6:199
And such a man would then take delight not only in the spectacle, nor in the sight alone, but also in the body itself.
6:200
For it relaxes him the more and makes him breathe freely, so that he supposes himself to be in heaven rather than upon earth.
6:201
There is also another kind of sound, when water, borne of its own accord from the mountain-top through gullies, and gently plashing upon the pebbles beneath with a soft murmur, so loosens our limbs with pleasure that it swiftly brings upon the eyes a sleep that unbinds the limbs.
6:202
你們已欣然聽了這番描述;
You have listened to the description with delight;
6:203
perhaps you have even become lovers of the solitude.
6:204
But far sweeter than this solitude is the soul of the long-suffering man.
6:205
因為我們採用這幅圖畫,並非為要描繪一片草場,也非為要將這番言語作為誇耀的展示;
For it was not that we might sketch a meadow, nor that we might bring forward this discourse for display, that we took up this image;
6:206
but that, having seen through this depiction how great is the pleasure of the long-suffering, and that a man would take far greater delight and profit by associating with a long-suffering man than by frequenting such places, you might earnestly pursue such men.
6:207
For when no violent wind issues from such a soul, but only gentle and mild words, truly imaging that calm of the west wind, and exhortations that have nothing harsh in them, but imitate the songbirds—
6:208
how is this not better? For the breeze of the word does not fall upon the body, but refreshes souls.
6:209
A physician could not so swiftly rid a fevered man of his fever, by whatever diligence, as a long-suffering man, taking hold of one who is irascible and inflamed with anger, would cool him by the breath of his own kindly words.
6:210
And why do I speak of a physician? Not even iron, heated red-hot and dipped in water, so swiftly loses its heat as an irascible man does when he falls upon a long-suffering soul.
6:211
正如在鬧市之中,若有歌唱的鳥雀飛入,牠們甚至顯得像是擾人的閒物;
And just as in the marketplace, if songbirds should enter, they seem even to be a nuisance;
6:212
so indeed also our admonitions, falling upon quick-tempered souls, [seem so].
6:213
Sweeter is gentleness than bitterness and insolence.
6:214
And not this alone, but the one thing the devil commanded, the other God enjoined.
6:215
You see that I did not simply say that, even if there were no devil and no God, the injunctions themselves would be sufficient to turn us away.
6:216
因為前一種人,既使自己愉悅,又於別人有益;
For the one man is both pleasant to himself and profitable to others;
6:217
while the other is both unpleasant to himself and harmful to others.
6:218
For nothing is more joyless than a wrathful man, nothing more burdensome, nothing more oppressive, nothing more shameful; just as, on the other hand, nothing is more pleasant than one who does not know how to be angry.
6:219
It is better to dwell with a wild beast than with such a man.
6:220
因為那野獸一旦被馴服,便守著牠的本性;
For that beast, once it has been tamed, keeps to its own nature;
6:221
but this man, however often you tame him, again grows savage, once he has settled himself into some such habit.
6:222
因為正如明亮愉悅的白晝,與滿有陰鬱的寒冬,彼此迥異;
For just as a bright and cheerful day, and a winter full of much gloom, are different from one another;
6:223
so too are the soul of the angry man and that of the gentle.
6:224
但我們暫且不看那臨到別人身上的損害,而先看那臨到動怒之人自己身上的;
But let us not yet look at the harm that befalls others, but at that which befalls the men themselves;
6:225
雖然這也不是小損害——把惡加給別人;
and yet this too is no small harm, to give evil to another;
6:226
nevertheless, for the present let us consider this.
6:227
What executioner could so tear the sides? What red-hot spits pierce the body? What madness could so drive one out of his natural senses as anger and frenzy? I know many who have brought forth diseases from anger.
6:228
And the grievous fevers are especially these.
6:229
But if they so ruin the body, consider the soul.
6:230
For do not reason thus, that you do not see it;
6:231
but consider that, if the thing which receives the wickedness is so injured, how great an injury must the thing which begets it sustain? Many have lost their eyes, many have fallen into the gravest illness.
6:232
But he who bears things nobly will endure all things with ease.
6:233
But nevertheless he [the devil] imposes such burdensome things, and for these sets before us as our wage—hell.
6:234
And he is the devil and an enemy of our salvation, and yet we obey him rather than Christ, who is Saviour and Benefactor, and who says such things as are both more pleasant and more profitable and more useful, and who benefits both us and those who are with us in the greatest measure.
6:235
親愛的,沒有甚麼比忿怒更壞,沒有甚麼比不合時宜的怒氣更壞;
Nothing is worse than anger, beloved, nothing worse than untimely wrath;
6:236
它無需多少的耽延;
it needs no long delay;
6:237
人常在怒氣的驅使下說出一句話,為要醫治這句話,卻需要一生之久;
often a man has cast out a word under the sway of wrath, for the healing of which he needs a whole lifetime;
6:238
and he has wrought something that has overturned his whole life.
6:239
For this is the grievous thing, that even in a brief moment, and through a single deed, and by one word alone, it has often cast us out of the eternal good things, and emptied out ten thousand labours.
6:240
Wherefore I exhort you to do everything so as to bridle this beast.
6:241
然而這些是論到溫和與怒氣的;
But these things concern gentleness and wrath;
6:242
and if one should bring forward for discussion the other things also—such as covetousness, contempt for riches, licentiousness, self-control, envy, kindliness—and compare them, he will know yet another difference. Do you see how, from the commands alone, the one is shown to be God, and the other the devil?
