But when they heard of a resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said,
39:2
'We will hear you again concerning this matter.'
39:3
And so Paul departed from the midst of them.
39:4
既然保羅已經勸服他們到這地步,甚至雅典人也說:「我們再聽你講論這事」,又沒有危險,他為何急忙離開雅典呢?或許他知道自己在此不會有大的收益;
Why then, when he had persuaded them to the point that the Athenians even said, 'We will hear you again concerning this,' and when there were no dangers, does Paul make haste to leave Athens? Perhaps he knew that he would gain no great benefit;
39:5
and moreover he was being led by the Spirit to Corinth.
39:6
But certain men joined themselves to him and believed, among whom also was Dionysius the Areopagite, and a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
39:7
And after these things, Paul departed from Athens and came to Corinth.
39:8
遇見一個猶太人,名叫亞居拉,生在本都,因猶太人被革老丟命令離開羅馬,新近帶著妻百基拉從義大利來;保羅就投奔他們;
And finding a certain Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, lately come from Italy, with Priscilla his wife (because Claudius had commanded all the Jews to depart from Rome), he came to them;
39:9
又因是同行,就與他們同住作工;
and because he was of the same trade, he stayed with them and worked;
39:10
for by their trade they were tent-makers.
39:11
Fittingly, as I said, he was being led by the Spirit into Corinth, in which it was necessary for him to remain.
39:12
因為雅典人雖然愛聽新奇的言論,卻仍舊不留心;
For the Athenians, although they were lovers of hearing strange discourse, nevertheless gave no heed;
39:13
for this was not what they were earnest about, but rather —
39:14
which is the very thing that made them hold back as well.
39:15
But if this were their custom, how do they bring the charge that 'he seems to be a proclaimer of strange demons'? Yet these matters were exceedingly perplexing.
39:16
But nevertheless he persuaded Dionysius the Areopagite and certain others.
39:17
For those who took thought for their manner of life quickly received the word, but the rest did so no longer.
39:18
所以保羅覺得目前撒下種子就已經足夠了;
It seemed sufficient, therefore, to Paul for the present to cast in the seeds;
39:19
for the greater part of his life had already gone by here.
39:20
For under Nero he was made perfect, and from the days of Claudius onward the war against the Jews was being kindled up — from afar, indeed, yet not improbably — so that in this way too they might come to their senses; and they were being driven out of Rome as though they were pests.
39:21
For this reason it is providentially ordered that he should be led there as a prisoner, so that he might not be expelled as a Jew, but that, being under official custody, he might both act and be guarded there.
39:22
'And he abode with them,' it says.
39:23
Marvellous! What a just occasion he found for dwelling together with them!
39:24
For since here especially it behoved him not to receive anything, as he himself says, 'That wherein they glory they may be found even as we,' it is providentially ordered that he should remain there.
39:25
And he reasoned in the synagogue every Sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.
39:26
But when both Silas and Timothy came down from Macedonia, Paul was constrained by the Spirit, testifying earnestly to the Jews that Jesus is the Christ.
39:27
That is to say, they insulted him, they set upon him.
39:28
And what did Paul do? He withdrew from them, and that with much fear.
39:29
'For it was no longer needful,' he says, 'that the word should be spoken to you;'
39:30
but he also speaks to them in a veiled manner.
39:31
But when they set themselves in opposition and blasphemed, he shook out his garments and said to them:
39:32
'Your blood be upon your own heads.'
39:33
'I am clean; from henceforth I will go to the Gentiles.'
39:34
And departing thence, he came into the house of a certain man named Justus, one that worshipped God, whose house was adjoining to the synagogue.
39:35
管會堂的基利司布和全家都信了主;
And Crispus, the ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house;
39:36
and many of the Corinthians, hearing, believed and were baptized.
39:37
你看,他雖說了「從今以後」,卻仍舊沒有撇棄他們;
See how, again, having said 'From henceforth,' not even so does he neglect them;
39:38
so that it was for the sake of rousing them that he said this.
39:39
And so afterwards he came to Justus, whose house was bordering on the synagogue.
39:40
It was near at hand, so that they might even take on zeal from the nearness, if only they were willing.
39:41
'And Crispus,' it says, 'the ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord with all his house.'
39:42
And this was especially sufficient to draw others in.
39:43
And the Lord said to Paul in the night by a vision:
39:44
'Fear not, but speak, and hold not thy peace; for I am with thee, and no man shall set on thee to harm thee, for I have much people in this city.'
39:45
See through how many things He persuades him, and how that which especially took hold of him, this He tells him last of all:
39:46
'For I have much people in this city.'
39:47
'How then did they set upon him?' one might ask. And indeed they availed nothing, but only brought him before the proconsul.
39:48
And he sat there a year and six months, teaching the word of God among them.
39:49
But when Gallio was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one accord rose up against Paul and brought him before the judgment-seat, saying that 'Contrary to the law this fellow persuades men to worship God.'
39:50
Do you see why they always wove together their accusations in public? Observe, at any rate, that here, when these said, 'Contrary to the law he persuades men to worship God,' the proconsul took no account of any of this, but rather made a defence on Paul's behalf.
39:51
And hear how he answers:
39:52
'If indeed it were some wrong or wicked piece of villainy touching the affairs of the city, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you.'
39:53
在我看來,這人是個公正持平的人;
This man seems to me to be a fair-minded person;
39:54
and this is plain from the way he answers with discernment.
39:55
'But when Paul was about to open his mouth,' it says, 'Gallio said to the Jews:'
39:56
「猶太人哪,若是為冤枉,或是奸惡的事,我理當耐性聽你們;
'If indeed it were some wrong or wicked piece of villainy, O ye Jews, reason would that I should bear with you;'
39:57
但所爭論的,若是關乎言語、名目,和你們的律法,你們自己去辦罷;
'but if it is a question about a word and names and your own law, see to it yourselves;'
39:58
'for I am not minded to be a judge of these matters.'
39:59
And he drove them from the judgment-seat.
39:60
And all the Greeks laid hold of Sosthenes, the ruler of the synagogue, and beat him before the judgment-seat; and Gallio cared for none of these things.
39:61
From this, again, the man's fairness is shown.
39:62
因為當所提尼被打的時候,迦流並不認為這是對自己的凌辱;
For when he himself was being beaten, Gallio did not consider it to be an affront to himself;
39:63
so reckless were the Jews.
39:64
But let us look from the beginning at what has been read.
39:65
'But when they heard of a resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said:'
39:66
How many great and lofty things they heard, and yet gave no heed, but mocked!
39:67
But the resurrection they mocked.
39:68
For the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit.
39:69
And so, he says, Paul departed from among them.
39:70
How? Having persuaded some, while being laughed at by the others.
39:71
And having departed from Athens, he says, he came to Corinth.
39:72
And finding a certain Jew named Aquila, a native of Pontus, lately come from Italy, he stayed with them and worked.
39:73
Observe how the Law now begins to be dissolved.
39:74
For this man, being a Jew, after shaving his head at Cenchreae, afterward departs together with Paul into Syria.
39:75
Being a native of Pontus, he was not eager to come to Jerusalem or anywhere near it, but rather farther away.
39:76
With him, then, Paul stays, and is not ashamed of staying, but stays for this very reason, having found a suitable lodging.
39:77
For it was far more suitable for him than a royal palace.
39:78
And do not laugh when you hear this, beloved.
39:79
For just as the wrestling-school is more useful to an athlete than soft bedding,
39:80
so also to the warrior the sword is of iron, and not of gold.
39:81
Let us be ashamed, we who even apart from preaching live in idleness.
39:82
Δι .
And he reasoned in the synagogue, he says, every sabbath, and persuaded both Jews and Greeks.
39:83
But when they set themselves in opposition and blasphemed, he withdrew.
39:84
Expecting by this the more to draw them, he withdraws.
39:85
For why, having left that house, did he come near to the synagogue? Was it not for this reason? For he saw no danger there.
39:86
Testifying to them, he says.
39:87
He no longer teaches, but testifies solemnly.
39:88
And when they set themselves in opposition, he says, and blasphemed, he shook out his garments and said:
39:89
Your blood be upon your own head.
39:90
他這樣行,是要不單用言語,也用行動使他們懼怕;
He does this so as to strike fear into them not by word only, but also by deed;
39:91
and he speaks more vehemently, inasmuch as he had also persuaded many.
39:92
I am clean, he says.
39:93
From now on I will go to the Gentiles.
39:94
So then we too are answerable for the blood of those entrusted to us, if we neglect them.
39:95
所以當他說「從此以後,人都不要攪擾我」時,也是為要使人懼怕;
So that also when he says, Henceforth let no one give me trouble, he says it to strike fear;
39:96
for punishment did not so much frighten them as this stung them.
39:97
And having removed from there, he came into the house of Justus.
39:98
He removes, wishing to persuade them that he was pressing on toward the Gentiles.
39:99
And Crispus, he says, the ruler of the synagogue, believed on the Lord together with his whole house.
39:100
Observe how the faithful then did this together with their entire household.
39:101
And when this had taken place, immediately many others also, having believed, were baptized.
39:102
This Crispus he calls the ruler of the synagogue, concerning whom he says in writing:
39:103
I baptized no other, except Crispus and Gaius.
39:104
And I think that this man is also called Sosthenes, who was so faithful a man that he was even beaten and was ever present with Paul.
39:105
And the Lord said, he says, to Paul in a vision:
39:106
因這緣故,他在那裡住了許久;
For this reason he remains there a long time;
39:107
for the multitude also persuaded him, but the intimacy of Christ still more.
39:108
For the danger now became greater, as both the greater number believed and the ruler of the synagogue.
39:109
This was enough to rouse him: that he was convicted of being afraid; or, though not convicted, yet in order that he might not even suffer this, he is encouraged.
39:110
For He did not always permit them to suffer harm, lest they should become weaker.
39:111
For nothing so grieved Paul as those who disbelieved, as those who set themselves in opposition.
39:112
This was even more grievous to him than the dangers.
39:113
And do not keep silence, he says, for I have much people in this city.
39:114
Perhaps for this reason also Christ appears to him.
39:115
And when Gallio, he says, was proconsul of Achaia, the Jews with one accord rose up against Paul.
39:116
Observe, after the year and the six months they set upon him, when they were no longer able to make use of their own laws.
39:117
This most of all raised up the Corinthians, that they were the more persuaded, seeing that not even the ruler stooped to interfere.
39:118
For it was not the same thing to conquer by disputation, and to learn.
39:119
to learn, that is, that the matters of the case were of no concern to him.
39:120
And consider how prudent that man was.
39:121
For he did not at once say in reply:
39:122
而是說甚麼呢?「猶太人哪,倘若果真有甚麼冤枉或奸惡的事,我理當耐性聽你們;
but what? If indeed it were some wrongdoing or wicked villainy, O Jews, I should with reason have borne with you;
39:123
但所爭論的,若是關乎言語、名目和你們自己的律法,你們自己去辦罷;
but if it is a question about words and names, and of your own law, see to it yourselves;
39:124
for I am not willing to be a judge of these things.
39:125
He walled off the tribunal against them.
39:126
And having laid hold of Sosthenes the ruler of the synagogue, they beat him before the judgment-seat, and none of these things concerned Gallio.
39:127
Oh, the shame with which they were put to shame!
39:128
經上說,這些事迦流都不管;
And none of these things, he says, concerned Gallio;
39:129
其實這一切都是針對他自己的尊嚴而發的;
and yet the whole was directed against his own dignity;
39:130
but as though they had taken license, they themselves beat him, doing the deed of unreasoning rage because of their shame.
39:131
And why did that man not strike back, though he too had the power? But they were being trained to bear things philosophically.
39:132
He does not strike back, so that the judge too might learn which was the more equitable party.
39:133
這事使旁觀的人得益不少;
This profited the bystanders not a little;
39:134
for both the equity of these and the insolence of those taught that such matters require a judicial verdict.
39:135
But these men do all things without order.
39:136
他也沒有說「你們不可如此」,免得他們再打他;
And he did not say, You must not, lest they should beat him again;
39:137
'For I,' he says, 'have no wish to be a judge of these matters.'
39:138
This is what Pilate too said concerning Christ:
39:139
'Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law.'
39:140
He indeed thought it right that they should judge according to the law, but they, like men drunk and out of their minds, were of such a disposition.
39:141
For this reason he withdrew from Athens, since there was a great multitude of people there.
39:142
He was being struck, and yet said nothing.
39:143
我們也當效法這人;
Let us too imitate this man;
39:144
let us strike back at those who strike us with gentleness, with silence, with long-suffering.
39:145
這樣的創傷更為厲害,這一擊更重、更叫人難當;
More grievous are these wounds, greater and more burdensome the blow;
39:146
for it is not the striking of the body, but of the mind, that is grievous.
39:147
我們擊打許多人,但因為那是出於友誼的方式,他們甚至以此為樂;
We strike many people, but because it is in the manner of friendship, they even take pleasure in it;
39:148
yet if you strike any chance person insolently, since you have touched his heart, you have grieved him exceedingly.
39:149
In this way we strike their heart the more.
39:150
That gentleness strikes more heavily than insolence, come, let us demonstrate as far as is possible by argument.
39:151
最明白的證明固然是藉著行為與經歷;
The clear demonstration is indeed through deeds and experience;
39:152
but if it seem good, let us also make the examination by argument, though we have already often done so.
39:153
因為在受辱的事上,沒有甚麼像旁觀者的評斷那樣使我們憂傷;
For in cases of insult nothing grieves us so much as the verdict of the onlookers;
39:154
for it is not the same thing to be insulted publicly and in private, but those insults we bear easily, when they come upon us in solitude, when there is none to bear witness to it, nor any who is aware.
39:155
如此可見,刺痛人的並非侮辱本身的性質,乃是在眾人面前承受這事;
Thus it is not the nature of the insult that stings, but the suffering of it before all;
39:156
so that if someone were to honour us before all, yet insult us in private, we should even feel gratitude.
39:157
Therefore the painfulness lies not in the nature of the insult, but in the verdict of the onlookers, lest one seem to be contemptible.
39:158
那麼,若這評斷正是站在我們這邊,又怎麼樣呢?當眾人為我們投票時,豈不是那侮辱人的反倒受了辱嗎?請告訴我,在場的人所輕看的是誰?是那侮辱人的,還是那受辱卻緘默的?怒氣固然暗示所輕看的是那受辱的人;
What then, if this very verdict is on our side? Is not rather the one who insults himself insulted, when they cast their votes in our favour? Tell me, whom do those present despise? The one who insults, or the one who is insulted and keeps silence? Anger indeed suggests that it is the one insulted;
39:159
but now, while we are free from the passion, let us consider it, that we may not then be carried away.
39:160
那麼我們眾人所定罪的是誰?顯然是那侮辱人的;
Whom then do we all condemn? It is plain that it is the one who insults;
39:161
and if he be an inferior, we shall say that he is even mad; if an equal, that he is foolish; if a superior, not even so shall we approve of him.
39:162
因為請告訴我,誰才配得稱許?是那心裡煩亂、被風暴顛簸、變得兇猛、對我們共有的人性抱這種態度的人,還是那在寧靜、在港灣、在極大智慧中的人?前者豈不像天使,後者卻連人都算不上麼?因為後者連自己的患難都擔當不了,前者卻連別人的患難也能擔當;
For who, tell me, is worthy of approval? The one who is troubled, storm-tossed, made savage, thus disposed toward our common nature, or the one in calm and in harbour and in much philosophy? Does not the one resemble an angel, and the other not even a man? For the one cannot even bear his own troubles, while that other bears even the troubles of others;
39:163
後者連自己都忍受不了,前者卻連別人也能忍受;
the one could not endure even himself, while the other endures even another;
39:164
後者是在船破之中,前者卻在穩妥中航行,他的船被順風送著前行;
the one is in shipwreck, while the other sails in safety, his ship borne along by favouring winds;
39:165
因為他不容那怒氣的狂風打在帆上,傾覆他心思的船隻;
for he did not allow the blast of anger, falling upon the sails, to overturn the vessel of his mind;
39:166
but a light and pleasant breeze, blowing gently upon him—the breath of forbearance—leads him with much tranquillity into the harbour of philosophy.
39:167
正如在破船之上,水手們不知道自己所拋棄的是甚麼,無論拿起的是自己的還是別人所託付的物件,他們都一概把所載的都拋下海,無論貴重的或不貴重的;
And just as in a shipwrecked vessel the sailors do not know what they throw overboard, whether they take up deposits belonging to their own or to others, but make jettison of all the contents alike, both the precious and those that are not such;
39:168
但等到風暴止息,那時他們細算所拋出的有多少,就哀哭起來,並且因所拋棄之物的損失,竟感覺不到那風平浪靜;
but when the storm ceases, then reckoning up how much they cast out, they weep, and do not perceive the calm because of the loss from the jettison;
39:169
在這裡也正是如此,當怒氣吹起、風暴興作的時候,他們不曉得按著次序拋出當拋的;
so indeed here too, when anger blows and the storm is roused, they do not know how to cast out what is fitting in due order;
39:170
but when the anger ceases, then reckoning up what sort of things they cast out, they consider the loss and do not perceive the repose, remembering the words by which they disgraced themselves and suffered the greatest loss—not in money, but in the reputation for gentleness and meekness.
39:171
Truly anger is darkness.
39:172
經上說:「愚頑人心裡說」;
'The fool,' it says, 'has said in his heart';
39:173
perhaps it is fitting to say this also concerning the man in anger, that the angry man has said:
39:174
'For according to the abundance of his wrath he will not seek out.'
39:175
For whatever godly reasoning enters, he thrusts them all away and drives them off, casting them all headlong aside.
39:176
除非你比那受辱的人更加痛苦,你才去侮辱人罷,縱使無人控告你;
Unless you grieve more than the one insulted, then insult, even though there be none to accuse you;
39:177
unless the tribunal of conscience, taking you in private, scourges you ten thousand times.
39:178
When therefore you hear that the one insulted uttered no bitter word, are you not the more pained by this? Tell me, how did you drench a man gentle and lowly and forbearing with ten thousand revilings? These things we say continually, but we do not see them exhibited in deeds.
39:179
Being a man, do you insult a man? Being a slave, your fellow-slave? But why do I marvel at this, when many insult even God? IV.
39:180
Let this be a consolation to you who are insulted.
39:181
Are you insulted? God too is insulted.
39:182
Are you reproached? God too is reproached.
39:183
Are you spat upon? For our Master too was.
39:184
In these things, then, He shares with us, but in the contrary things no longer.
39:185
因為祂從未不義地侮辱過人;
For He never insulted anyone unjustly;
39:186
nor did He reproach without cause, nor did He wrong anyone.
39:187
So that it is we who share with Him, not you.
39:188
因為忍受侮辱是屬乎神的;
For to bear being insulted belongs to God;
39:189
but to insult without cause belongs to a demon.
39:190
基督曾聽見人說:「你是被鬼附著的」;
'You have a demon,' Christ heard;
39:191
He was struck by the servant of the high priest.
39:192
所以那些不義地侮辱人的,就與那些人站在一起;
Those, then, who insult unjustly stand with those men;
39:193
for if Peter even heard himself called Satan for one word, much more shall these Jews hear it, when they do the deeds of the Jews, just as those men were children of the devil, since they wrought the works of the devil.
39:194
你侮辱人,請告訴我你算得甚麼?倒不如說,你正因你甚麼都不是才侮辱人;
You insult—being who, tell me? Rather, for this very reason you insult, because you are nothing;
39:195
for no one who is truly a man insults.
39:196
因此在爭吵中所說的那句「你是誰?」倒該反過來說;
So that what is said in quarrels, 'Who are you?' ought to be said the other way round;
39:197
就是說,人該說:「儘管侮辱罷」;
that is, one ought to say, 'Insult away';
39:198
but as it is, when we say, 'As being who do you insult?' one may hear throughout, 'As being better than you.'
39:199
然而該說的正是相反的話;
And yet the opposite ought to be said;
39:200
只因我們問得不當,為此他們也就答得不當;
but since we ask amiss, for this reason they too answer amiss;
39:201
for as though those who insult were great men, we so speak:
39:202
'As being who do you insult?' For this reason they too answer thus.
39:203
然而該說的乃是相反的話;
But the contrary ought to be said;
39:204
and to those who do not insult, this rather ought to be said:
39:205
'As being who do you not insult? You have surpassed human nature.'
39:206
This is nobility, this is freedom—to utter nothing ignoble, even though one deserve to hear it.
39:207
那麼請告訴我,有多少人不配被處死呢?然而審判官並不憑自己行這事,卻要先詢問;
Tell me, then, how many are not deserving to be put to death? And yet the judge does not do this of himself, but he questions;
39:208
and not even this does he do of himself.
39:209
但若審判者連與惡人交談都不能忍受,反而要藉著某個中間人,那麼我們就更不當侮辱那些與我們同等的人;
But if it is intolerable for one who is judging to converse with a wicked man, and instead he employs some intermediary, then much more ought we not to insult those who are our equals;
39:210
for we shall not so much gain the advantage over them by insulting them, as we shall be taught that we have insulted ourselves.
39:211
因此,惡人我們不當侮辱,出於這個緣故;而善人我們也不當侮辱,還有另一緣故,就是他們不配受這樣的對待;
The wicked, therefore, we must not insult, for this reason; and the good, for yet another reason, namely that they do not deserve it;
39:212
and thirdly, because one ought not to be an insolent person at all.
39:213
A man is insulted and outraged, and he who does the outrage is a man, and those who look on are men.
39:214
What then? Must the wild beasts come into the midst and make peace? For that is what is left.
39:215
因為當那些人竟以不義為樂時,剩下能促成和好的便只有野獸了;
For when the men are those who take delight in injustice, it remains for the beasts to effect the reconciliation;
39:216
when masters are quarrelling in a house, it remains for the servants to reconcile them ( for this the very nature of the matter demands, even if perhaps it does not come about in this way).
39:217
正因如此,侮慢便被人看作是件了不起的事,並被視為與尊貴之人相稱;
For this reason insolence has come to seem something great, and to seem to befit the great;
39:218
whereas it rather befits slaves, just as fair speech becomes free men.
39:219
For as to do evil belongs to the former, so to suffer evil belongs to the latter.
39:220
偷竊的女僕暗中盜取主人的財物是甚麼樣子,侮慢也正是這樣的東西;
What a thieving maidservant is, secretly filching her master's goods, such a thing also is insolence;
39:221
而且,正如人所說的,賊人匆忙進來,四處張望,急切地想偷走些甚麼;
and, as one might say, just as the thief, entering in haste, looks all around, eager to snatch away something;
39:222
so also this man scans everything around him.
39:223
Perhaps let us portray him by yet another illustration.
39:224
因為正如有人從屋裏偷走污穢的器皿,並當著眾人的面把它們搬出去,他所羞辱的與其說是那被偷之物,倒不如說是他自己,因他盜取並搬運這些東西;
For just as if someone were to steal unclean vessels out of a house, and to carry them out in front of everyone, he would not so much disgrace the things stolen as he would disgrace himself, in filching these and carrying them out;
39:225
so indeed this man too, casting out unclean words in front of everyone, disgraced not others but himself through his words, bringing forth such things and defiling both his tongue and his mind.
39:226
For the same thing happens when we contend with the wicked, as if a man, in order to strike one who is in a state of putrefaction, were to defile himself by plunging his hands into the mire.
39:227
Reckoning up all these things, I exhort you, let us flee the harm that comes from this, and keep our tongue given to fair speech, so that, being kept pure from all insolence, we may be able with all exactness to accomplish the present life, and to attain the good things promised to those who love Him, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, to the Father together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, power, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
