Now Paul and Barnabas continued in Antioch, teaching and preaching the word of the Lord with many others also. And after certain days Paul said to Barnabas:
34:2
Let us return then and visit the brethren in every city where we have proclaimed the word of the Lord, and see how they fare.
34:3
See again their humility, how they impart the word to others as well.
34:4
路加早已為我們記述了其餘使徒的性情,指明那一位較為溫和,更肯寬容,而這一位則較為嚴謹,更為嚴厲;
And already Luke had described for us the character of the rest of the apostles, showing that the one was gentler and more inclined to pardon, while this one was more exacting and more austere;
34:5
因為恩賜原有分別;
for the gifts are diverse;
34:6
and that this too is a gift, is plain.
34:7
然而這一種適合某些人的性情,那一種則適合另一些人;
But the one suits certain dispositions of men, and the other suits others;
34:8
and if they were to be transposed, it would become useless thereafter.
34:9
And it seems indeed to be some sharp contention, yet the whole thing is a dispensation.
34:10
For that each might take up the places befitting him, this comes to pass.
34:11
And besides, it was fitting that all should not be of equal rank, but that one should rule and another be ruled.
34:12
因為居比路人並未顯出安提阿人和其餘人所顯出的那等情形;
For the Cyprians displayed nothing of the sort such as those in Antioch and the rest;
34:13
and those had more need of the gentler disposition, while these had need of this other.
34:14
巴拿巴有意要帶著那稱為馬可的約翰同去;
And Barnabas was minded to take with them also John, called Mark;
34:15
but Paul thought it right not to take along with them him who had departed from them at Pamphylia, and had not gone with them to the work.
34:16
於是二人起了激烈的爭論,甚至彼此分開;巴拿巴帶著馬可,坐船往居比路去;
There arose therefore a sharp contention, so that they separated from one another, and Barnabas took Mark and sailed away to Cyprus;
34:17
but Paul chose Silas, and went forth, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God.
34:18
在眾先知中間,我們也照樣看見各異的判斷和各異的性情;
So too among the prophets we find differing judgments and differing characters;
34:19
as, for instance, Elijah was austere, Moses meek.
34:20
And here too, accordingly, Paul is the more vehement.
34:21
But observe even so his forbearance.
34:22
He thought it right, it says, not to take along with them him who had departed from them at Pamphylia.
34:23
因為正如將軍不會願意時常帶著一個怠忽職守的挑夫;
For just as a general would not choose to have always a baggage-carrier who is slack in his duty;
34:24
This both instructed the others, and set that man himself in order.
34:25
有人或問,這樣說來,巴拿巴是壞的嗎?斷乎不是;
Well then, one may say, was Barnabas bad? By no means;
34:26
nay, it is exceedingly absurd to suppose this.
34:27
為著這樣一件小事就說這人變壞了,這豈不是荒謬嗎?但要看,第一,這事並未生出甚麼惡來,倘若他們既足以應付整個整個的民族,就彼此分開了,這反倒是一件大好事;
And how is it not absurd to say that over so small a matter this man became bad? But observe that, first, no evil at all came of it, if, being sufficient for whole nations, they were separated from one another—nay, even a great good;
34:28
and next, that had this not been the case, they would not readily have chosen to part from one another.
34:29
But marvel with me at this man, who did not even conceal this.
34:30
But even if they had to be separated, one may say, it should have been without a sharp contention.
34:31
Now above all, from this very thing the human element is shown.
34:32
For if this had to happen in the case of Christ, much more here.
34:33
And besides, the contention would not be base, when each disputes over such matters, and with just reason.
34:34
那麼,倘若他們中間有一個,是在尋求自己的益處和自己當得的尊榮時被激動的,那才另當別論;
If, then, one of them had been provoked while seeking his own advantage and the honor due to himself—well and good;
34:35
but if each, wishing to train and to teach, took the one this way and the other that—what sort of charge is this? They were doing much also by human judgment.
34:36
And observe Paul accusing, and stating the reason.
34:37
因為他出於極大的謙卑而敬重巴拿巴,因巴拿巴曾在許多事上與他有分,並與他同在一起;
For he respected Barnabas out of much humility, inasmuch as he had shared with him in so many things and had been together with him;
34:38
yet he did not so respect him as even to overlook what was fitting.
34:39
那麼他們中間誰的主意更好,這不是我們所該斷定的;
Which of them, then, took the better counsel, it is not for us to declare;
34:40
but for the present it is clear that a great dispensation came about, seeing that these were to be deemed worthy of a second visitation, while those not even once.
34:41
They did not simply continue in Antioch, but were teaching.
34:42
What were they teaching? And what were they preaching as good news? Both to those already believers, and to those not yet.
34:43
For since there were countless occasions of stumbling, their presence was needed.
34:44
The point in question is not that they differed in their opinions, but that they yielded to one another so as to see the matter through.
34:45
Thus the separation became a greater good, and the affair took from this its occasion.
34:46
What then? Did they part as enemies? God forbid.
34:47
For you see how, after this, Barnabas enjoys many commendations from Paul in the Epistles.
34:48
'There arose,' it says, 'a sharp contention'—not enmity nor rivalry.
34:49
So strong was the contention that it parted them.
34:50
For what each supposed to be profitable, this thereafter he would not give up for the sake of fellowship with the other.
34:51
It seems to me that the separation came about even by good judgment, and that they said to one another: 'Since I do not wish it, but you do, let us divide the territories, that we may not quarrel.'
34:52
So that it was in fully yielding to one another that they did this.
34:53
因為巴拿巴願意保羅的意見得以成立;
For Barnabas wished Paul's opinion to stand;
34:54
為此他就退去;
and for this reason he withdrew;
34:55
保羅照樣也願意那一位的意見得以成立;
and Paul likewise wished the other's opinion to stand;
34:56
and for this reason he too does the same and withdraws.
34:57
Would that we too were parted by such partings, so as to depart for the preaching of the gospel!
34:58
'But Paul,' it says, 'having chosen Silas, went out, being commended by the brethren to the grace of God.'
34:59
This man is admirable, and exceedingly great.
34:60
And this dispute greatly benefited Mark.
34:61
因為保羅的嚴厲叫他回轉,巴拿巴的慈愛叫他不再被撇下;
For Paul's severity converted him, while Barnabas's kindness caused him to be no longer left behind;
34:62
so that, though they contend, the gain arrives at one and the same end.
34:63
因為他看見保羅寧願離開他,就必大大懼怕,並且自責;
For indeed, seeing Paul choosing to withdraw from him, he would have been greatly afraid and would have condemned himself;
34:64
又看見巴拿巴這樣顧惜他,就必大大愛他;
and again, seeing Barnabas thus clinging to him, he would have loved him greatly;
34:65
這門徒就藉著師傅們的爭執得了糾正;
and the disciple was set right through the strife of the teachers;
34:66
so far was he from being made to stumble.
34:67
因為他們若是為著自己的尊榮而行這事,那還說得過去;
For if they did this for the sake of their own honor, it would be understandable;
34:68
but if it was for his salvation, and they strive over one single thing—namely, to show that the one who honored him
34:69
had counseled well—what is amiss in that? (III)
34:70
Behold the discernment of Paul:
34:71
he does not go on to other cities before visiting those that had received the word.
34:72
'And he went through Syria and Cilicia, strengthening the churches.'
34:73
'And he came to Derbe and Lystra.'
34:74
For indeed it is a mark of folly to run in vain.
34:75
Let us first instruct the foremost, that these may not become a hindrance to those who come after.
34:76
'Let us visit the brethren,' he says, 'to see how they fare.'
34:77
And this too he did not know—and rightly so—that coming he might visit the brethren.
34:78
Behold him ever wakeful, full of care, not enduring to sit still, though he had endured countless dangers.
34:79
Do you see that his coming to Antioch was no act of cowardice? For just as a physician, he went off to the sick, and he made plain the necessity of the visitation, saying, 'In which we proclaimed the word.'
34:80
Barnabas departed, and no longer accompanied him.
34:81
'Having chosen,' it says, 'Silas, and being commended to the grace of God.'
34:82
What is this? 'They prayed,' it says, 'they besought God.'
34:83
Behold everywhere how the prayer of the brethren has great power.
34:84
此後他步行趕路,也願意藉著這行程使那些看見他的人得益處;
And thereafter he journeyed on foot, wishing also through the journeying to benefit those who saw him;
34:85
for whenever they were in haste, they went by sea.
34:86
'And behold, there was a certain disciple there named Timothy, the son of a believing Jewish woman, but of a Greek father;'
34:87
'who was well attested by the brethren in Lystra and Iconium.'
34:88
'This man Paul wished to go forth with him;'
34:89
'and he took and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those parts.'
34:90
'For they all knew his father, that he was a Greek.'
34:91
It is worthy of astonishment—the discernment of Paul.
34:92
He who had contended concerning circumcision, who had stirred up everything and had not withdrawn until he had prevailed and the decree had been ratified—he circumcises the disciple.
34:93
Not only does he not hinder others, but he himself performs this very thing.
34:94
沒有比保羅更有智慧的了;
Nothing is wiser than Paul;
34:95
以致他看凡事都是為著甚麼有益處;
so that he regarded all things with a view to what is profitable;
34:96
he did nothing simply out of prejudice.
34:97
'This man,' it says, 'he wished to go forth with him.'
34:98
This is the wonderful thing—that he even took him along.
34:99
'Because of the Jews,' it says, 'who were in those parts.'
34:100
這就是行割禮的緣由;
This is the reason for the circumcising;
34:101
for they would not have endured to hear the word from one uncircumcised.
34:102
And what then? Behold the achievement:
34:103
他行了割禮,為要廢去割禮;
he circumcised, that he might abolish circumcision;
34:104
for he was proclaiming the decrees of the apostles.
34:105
Do you see a strife, and through the strife an edification? Not being warred upon by others, but themselves doing contrary things, thus they built up the Church.
34:106
They brought in a decree not to circumcise, and he circumcises.
34:107
'And they increased,' it says, 'in number daily.'
34:108
你看見割禮的益處麼?此後他就不在這些人中間耽延,因為他來原是為探望;
Do you see the gain of the circumcision? Then thereafter he does not tarry among these, seeing that he had come to make a visitation;
34:109
'And as they went through the cities, they delivered to them for keeping the decrees that had been decided by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem.'
34:110
'So the churches were made firm in the faith, and increased in number daily.'
34:111
'And having gone through Phrygia and the region of Galatia, being forbidden by the Holy Spirit to speak the word in Asia, they left Phrygia and Galatia and hastened toward the interior.'
34:112
'Coming opposite Mysia, they tried to go into Bithynia, but the Spirit did not permit them.'
34:113
至於他們為甚麼被禁止,他沒有說;
Now why they were forbidden, he does not say;
34:114
but that they were forbidden, he did say, teaching us only to obey and not to seek the reasons, and showing that they did many things in a human manner also.
34:115
'And passing by Mysia, they came down to Troas.'
34:116
'And a vision appeared to Paul through the night:'
34:117
A certain man of Macedonia was standing, entreating him and saying:
34:118
'Come over into Macedonia and help us.'
34:119
為什麼藉著異象,而不是聖靈的命令呢?祂願意用這樣的方式吸引他們;
Why by a vision, and not by the Holy Spirit's command? He wished in this way also to draw them on;
34:120
for to the saints too a dream appeared.
34:121
And at the very beginning he himself saw a vision, a man entering and laying his hands upon him.
34:122
Then for this reason too He draws him there, that the preaching might be extended.
34:123
And besides, for this reason too he is prevented from tarrying in the other cities, since Christ was urging him on.
34:124
因為這些人本要長久享有約翰的同在,或許他們也並不十分需要;
For these were destined to enjoy John's company for a long time also, and perhaps they did not even greatly need it;
34:125
And so, having crossed over, he now sets out.
34:126
'And when he had seen the vision, immediately we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us to preach the gospel to them.'
34:127
'And setting sail from Troas, we made a straight course to Samothrace, and on the following day to Neapolis, and from there to Philippi, which is the first city of that part of Macedonia, a colony.'
34:128
'And we were staying in that city for some days.'
34:129
So also Christ appears to him, saying: 'You must stand before Caesar.'
34:130
接著他也提到那些地方,因為他正是在敘述一段歷史,指明他在何處停留過;
Then he mentions the places as well, since he is recounting a narrative, and showing where he lingered;
34:131
and he shows that it was in the greater cities that he stayed, while he passed by the rest.
34:132
A colony is a mark of dignity for a city.
34:133
But let us look at what has been said from the beginning.
34:134
He lays upon Barnabas the necessity of the journey abroad, saying:
34:135
'Let us visit the cities in which we proclaimed the word.'
34:136
And yet he ought not to have made the request, seeing that he was afterwards going to find fault.
34:137
這樣的事在神與摩西身上也曾發生;
This happens in the case of God and of Moses as well;
34:138
the one makes the request, while the other is angry.
34:139
'If her father had but spit in her face...'
34:140
and again, 'Let Me alone, and in My wrath I will blot out this people;'
34:141
還有撒母耳,當他為掃羅哀傷的時候;
and Samuel, when he mourns for Saul;
34:142
for through both alike great good things come to pass.
34:143
So indeed here too the one is angry, while the other is no longer so.
34:144
This happens in our own case as well.
34:145
And the sharp contention was fitting, that the one might be disciplined, and that the matter might not seem to be a mere pretense.
34:146
因為那位處處退讓的人,若非如此,在這裡也不會不退讓——他是那樣愛保羅,甚至在此以前還在大數尋找他,把他帶到眾使徒那裡,使賙濟的事成為共同的工作,又一同領受了關乎那教令的事;
For he who yielded everywhere would not have failed to yield here—he who so loved Paul that even before this he sought him out in Tarsus, and brought him to the apostles, and made the ministry of alms a common work, and jointly accepted the matters concerning the decree;
34:147
然而他們彼此分開,好叫藉著這分離,教導並成全那些需要他們教訓的人;
but they separate from one another, so that through the separation they might instruct and perfect those who needed the teaching that came from them;
34:148
just as indeed he does elsewhere also, when he says:
34:149
'But as for you, do not grow weary in doing what is good.'
34:150
And he rebukes some, but commands that good be done toward all.
34:151
This we do in ordinary life as well.
34:152
Here it seems to me that others also joined in indignation with Paul.
34:153
And thereafter, taking those men aside privately, he does everything, and exhorts, and admonishes.
34:154
同心合意能成就許多事,愛心能成就許多事;
Concord can accomplish much, love can accomplish much;
34:155
even if you make a request on behalf of some great matter, even if you are unworthy, you shall be heard because of your purpose; do not be afraid.
34:156
'He went through the cities,' it says.
34:157
'And behold, there was a disciple named Timothy, who was well spoken of by the brethren in Lystra and Iconium.'
34:158
Great is the faith of Timothy, in that he is well spoken of by all.
34:159
When Barnabas departed, he finds another to counterbalance him.
34:160
Concerning this man he says: 'Being mindful of your tears and of your unfeigned faith, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice.'
34:161
'And taking him,' it says, 'he circumcised him.'
34:162
For what reason? He himself adds, saying:
34:163
'Because of the Jews who were in those places.'
34:164
所以正是為著這緣故他受了割禮;
For this reason then he is circumcised;
34:165
See how already the Law is being dissolved.
34:166
但在某些人看來,他似乎是在福音宣講之後才出生的;
But to some it seems that he was born after the preaching;
34:167
for 'from a babe,' it says, 'you have known the sacred Scriptures.'
34:168
One may therefore say that, or if not this, then that he was going to make him a bishop, and it was not fitting that he should be uncircumcised.
34:169
Meanwhile it was fitting that the Gentiles should observe no such thing.
34:170
This too was no small thing, seeing that even after so long a time this also gave them offense.
34:171
外邦人不守這些規條,卻絲毫不受虧損,在信仰上也不居於劣勢——這正是廢除律法的開端;
It was the beginning of the abolition, that the Gentiles should not keep these things, and should suffer no harm, nor be at any disadvantage in respect of the faith;
34:172
所以,他既將要傳道,為免給猶太人雙重的打擊,就給這人行了割禮,儘管他只有一半是猶太人;
Since therefore he was about to preach, in order that he might not deal the Jews a double blow, he circumcised this man, even though he was but half a Jew;
34:173
因為他的父親是希臘人,母親卻是信主的;
for he was of a Greek father, but of a believing mother;
34:174
然而,既然在外邦人中間那成就是何等的大,他就不為這事憂慮了;
yet nevertheless, since that achievement among the Gentiles was a great one, he took no anxious thought about this;
34:175
因為那道必須廣傳撒播;
for the word had to be sown broadcast;
34:176
for this reason he too circumcised him.
34:177
See here too how a great good came to pass out of an opposition.
34:178
'And they increased in number,' it says.
34:179
Do you see that circumcision not only did no harm, but even brought the greatest benefit? 'And when he had seen the vision,' it says, 'immediately we sought to go forth into Macedonia, concluding that the Lord had called us.'
34:180
你看,不再像對腓利、對哥尼流那樣藉著天使;
See, no longer through an angel as to Philip, as to Cornelius;
34:181
but what? Through a vision it now appears to him in a more human way, no longer in a more divine way.
34:182
因為在較容易被說服之處,就用較合乎人情的方式;
For where it is easier to be persuaded, it is in a more human way;
34:183
but where much force is needed, in a more divine way.
34:184
因為在他只是切望要傳道之處,向他顯現的乃是一個夢;
For where he was merely eager to preach, in this a dream appears to him;
34:185
but where he could not endure not to preach, in this the Holy Spirit makes revelation.
34:186
For the Spirit did not work the easy things as well, but even a dream sufficed for him.
34:187
And to Joseph too, since he was easily persuaded, it was in a dream that the vision appeared; but to the others, while they were awake.
34:188
So it was with Cornelius as well, even with this very man.
34:189
'And behold,' he says, 'a man of Macedonia stood, beseeching him and saying.'
34:190
He did not say 'commanding,' but 'beseeching'—
34:191
that is to say, on behalf of those very people who were in need of healing.
34:192
What is the meaning of 'concluding'? 'Gathering by inference,' he says.
34:193
For from the fact that Paul saw this and no one else, and from his being forbidden by the Spirit, and from his being near the borders—from all these things they drew these conclusions.
34:194
此外,這次航行本身也把這事顯明出來;
And in another way too the voyage itself made this plain;
34:195
for not much time passed before they arrived at the very heart of Macedonia.
34:196
So then the sharp contention was providentially ordered to come about for good.
34:197
For otherwise the Holy Spirit would not have wrought, and Macedonia would not have received the word.
34:198
And such great progress was a sign that what had come to pass was nothing merely human.
34:199
然而經上並沒有說巴拿巴被激怒了;
And yet he did not say that Barnabas was provoked;
34:200
but, 'A sharp contention arose between them.'
34:201
If the one was not provoked, neither was the other.
34:202
Knowing these things, let us not merely pick them out at random, but let us learn and be instructed by them.
34:203
不明白聖經乃是極大的禍患;
It is a great evil to be ignorant of the Scriptures;
34:204
and from the very things by which we ought to be benefited, from these very things we suffer harm.
34:205
藥物也是如此,它們雖然常有醫治的性質,但用藥的人若不知道如何善用,反倒帶來敗壞與滅亡;
So too medicines, though they often have a healing nature, when those who use them do not know how to use them well, work destruction and ruin;
34:206
and weapons, though able to protect, if no one knows how to put them on, are the cause of destruction to those very persons.
34:207
The reason is that we seek everything rather than the profit of the soul, and we consider the affairs of others rather than our own advantage.
34:208
我們常常留意房屋的保養,斷不肯眼看它日漸破舊,或是傾倒,或是被風暴摧殘;
And often we look to the maintenance of a house, and we would not endure to see it growing old, nor falling down, nor battered by storms;
34:209
but for the soul there is no care at all; nay, even if we see its foundations rotting, and its structure and its roof, we take no account of it.
34:210
再者,我們若有牲畜,就尋求牠們的好處,僱用馬夫和獸醫,用盡各樣的方法;
Again, if we have brute beasts, we seek their advantage, and we set in motion grooms and horse-doctors, and pull every rope;
34:211
我們也照料馬廄,並囑咐那受託管理的人,不可草率隨便地驅趕牲畜,不可加給過重的擔子,不可在深夜非時牽牠們出去,也不可變賣牠們的飼料;在我們中間,為著牲畜的好處,定下了許多的規矩;
and we take care of our stables, and we charge those entrusted with them not to drive carelessly nor at random, nor to lay on too great a burden, nor to lead them out at unseasonable hours of the night, nor to sell off their fodder; and many rules are laid down among us concerning the advantage of the brute beasts;
34:212
but for the soul there is no account taken.
34:213
Again, why do I speak of brute beasts that are useful to us? There are many who keep sparrows that have nothing useful about them, but merely give amusement, and there are many rules even concerning those, and nothing is neglected or left in disorder, and we take more care of everything than of our own selves.
34:214
So much more dishonored than all things are we.
34:215
若有人辱罵我們,稱我們為「狗」,我們就覺得傷心;
And if someone, insulting us, calls us 'dog,' we are grieved;
34:216
yet we ourselves insult ourselves, not in word but in deed, and, imparting to the soul not even so much care as to the dogs, we think we suffer nothing dreadful.
34:217
你們看見萬事被何等深的黑暗所充滿嗎?有多少人為他們的狗費心,惟恐餵得過多,好叫牠們敏銳善獵,靠著飢餓與飢渴所催逼;
Do you see with how great a darkness all things are filled? How many take thought for their dogs, that they may not be fed more than is needful, so that they may be keen and good at the hunt, being driven on by hunger and famine;
34:218
至於自己,他們卻毫不留意,也不吩咐自己不可縱情安逸;
but for themselves they take no care, nor do they enjoin upon themselves not to live in luxury;
34:219
and while they teach the brute beasts to practice self-discipline, they themselves consent to be dragged down into the brutishness of the beasts.
34:220
有人說:「牲畜哪裏懂得甚麼哲理呢?」難道你不覺得這是極大的哲理麼——當一隻狗餓得難受,在捕獲並擒住獵物之後,卻不去碰那擺在眼前的食物,甚至看見桌上擺著筵席,飢餓催逼,仍然等候牠的主人?你們當為自己感到羞愧;
'And where,' one says, 'are the brute beasts philosophical?' Or does it not seem to you a mark of great philosophy, when a dog, gnawed by hunger, after taking and catching its prey, refrains from the food that is at hand, and, seeing a table set before it, though hunger presses hard, waits for its master? Be ashamed of yourselves;
34:221
train your own bellies to be thus philosophical.
34:222
If God was able to implant so great a philosophy in an irrational nature that neither speaks nor possesses reason, much more will you be able to implant it in yourself.
34:223
For that this comes of human care and not of nature, all dogs would have to possess it.
34:224
Become, then, like the dogs.
34:225
是你們逼得我從那等地方取喻;
You compel me to bring my examples from that quarter;
34:226
其實我本當從屬天的事上取喻;
for indeed I ought to draw them from heavenly things;
34:227
but since, whenever I say anything of that kind, you say that those things are too lofty, therefore I say nothing of the heavenly things.
34:228
我若提起保羅,你們就說他是使徒;
And if I mention Paul, you say that he was an apostle;
34:229
therefore I do not mention Paul either.
34:230
我若提起某個人,你們就說他是有能力這樣行的;
If I mention a man, you say that he was able to do it;
34:231
所以我連人也不提,只提牲畜,並且是一隻並非本性就有這德性的牲畜,免得你們說牠是靠本性、而非靠意志成就這事的;
therefore I do not mention a man either, but a beast, and a beast that does not possess this by nature, lest you should say that it is by nature, and not by choice, that it accomplished this;
34:232
and the wonderful thing is, by a choice not its own, but by your care.
34:233
牠並不計較自己已經疲乏、因奔跑而傷破、乃是靠自己的勞苦擒得了獵物;
It does not consider that it was worn out, that it was torn by the running, that it took the prey by its own toils;
34:234
but casting all these things aside, it keeps the command of its master and rises above the belly.
34:235
For it expects to be praised, it expects to enjoy a fuller table.
34:236
那麼,你也當對自己說:這狗因盼望將來的享受,就輕看眼前的;
Say, then, to yourself also, that the dog, in hope of pleasure to come, despises the present;
34:237
你卻不肯因盼望將來的美善之物,而輕看眼前的事物;
but you are not willing, in hope of good things to come, to despise present things;
34:238
那狗曉得:牠若在不合時、且違背主人心意之時嘗那食物,就連那食物也要被奪去,甚至連原定的分量也得不著,反倒受了鞭打,代替食物;
but it knows that, if unseasonably and contrary to what seems good to its master it tastes of the food, it will be deprived even of that, and will not even have the appointed portion, receiving stripes instead of food;
34:239
but you cannot even see this, and what that beast learned from habit, this you do not accomplish from reason.
34:240
This the hawks too and the eagles are said to do.
34:241
那些狗是對付鹿與別的走獸,這些鷹雕是對付飛鳥;
Those with the deer and the other brute beasts, these with the birds;
34:242
and these, again, out of human training.
34:243
These things have power to condemn us, these things to convict us.
34:244
我再說一件事:那些又踢又咬、又野又暴的馬,有經驗的馴馬人在短時間內就把牠們調教得妥當,以致坐在牠們上面的騎者,因牠們步伐的規矩而覺得愜意;
Let me tell of yet another thing: taking wild and untamed horses that kick and bite, in a short time the experienced trainers so train them, that the rider seated upon them takes delight in the orderliness of their gait;
34:245
but when the soul walks disorderly, no one takes any care, but it leaps and kicks and is dragged along the ground like a little child, and behaves unseemly in ten thousand ways, and no one puts shears upon it, nor foot-bands, nor bridles, nor seats upon it the experienced rider—I mean Christ.
34:246
For this very reason all things have been turned upside down.
34:247
For when you train dogs to master the belly, and subdue anger in a lion, and unruliness in horses, and eloquence in birds, how is it not absurd to implant rational achievements in irrational natures, but to bring into rational natures the passions of the irrational? We have no excuse, none at all.
34:248
凡那些成功勝過的,無論是信的或不信的,都要控告我們;
All who have succeeded will accuse us, both believers and unbelievers;
34:249
因為就連不信的也曾勝過,走獸與狗也曾勝過,不單是人而已;
for indeed even unbelievers have succeeded, and beasts and dogs, not men only;
34:250
and we ourselves shall accuse our own selves—when we will, succeeding; and when we are slothful, being dragged down.
34:251
For indeed many of those who were in vehement wickedness have often, when they willed, changed.
34:252
And the cause is, as I said, that we go about seeking the advantages of others, not our own.
34:253
你若建造一座華麗的房屋,你所顧念的乃是房屋的好處,而非你自己的;
If you build a splendid house, you have looked to the advantage of the house, not to your own;
34:254
你若置辦一件美好的衣裳,所顧念的乃是身體的好處,而非你自己的;
if you take a fine garment, to that of the body, not to your own;
34:255
沒有一個人思想怎樣使靈魂得以美好;
No one considers how the soul shall be made fair;
34:256
and yet, if this be fair, there is need of none of those things.
34:257
But when she is not [beautiful], there is no profit at all from those things.
34:258
For just as in the case of a bride, though there be bridal chambers hung with curtains of gold, though there be choirs of women most comely and fair, though there be roses and garlands, though the bridegroom himself be handsome, though the handmaids and the friends and all present be graceful in form, yet if she herself be full of unsightliness, there is no profit whatsoever.
34:259
And conversely, when she is beautiful, no harm could come to her from these things; rather, quite the opposite.
34:260
因為她若本是醜的,那些華飾反倒使她顯得更醜;
For from those adornments, if she be uncomely, she would appear the more uncomely;
34:261
but from these same things, if she be fair, she would become still more lovely.
34:262
So indeed is it also with the soul: when it is beautiful, not only does it need none of these things, but it even veils and conceals its own beauty by them.
34:263
For we shall see the philosopher shining forth, not so much in wealth, as in poverty.
34:264
因為在富足中,許多人會把他的德行歸因於他的錢財,歸因於他不缺乏金錢;
For there many will ascribe his conduct to his riches, and to his not being in want of money;
34:265
but when he lives with poverty, and yet shines in all things, and is not compelled to do anything shameful, then no other person shares with him the crown of philosophy.
34:266
This, then, let us adorn, if indeed we wish to be rich.
34:267
當那些騾子白淨、健壯、養得肥美,你這騎坐其上的人卻瘦弱、生疥、面容醜陋,這有甚麼益處?當鋪墊柔軟華美,滿是精巧繁複的織工技藝,靈魂卻披著破爛、赤身、可恥,這有甚麼好處?當那馬匹步伐整齊,與其說是行走,不如說是跳舞,並隨著那舞步妝點如新郎般的華飾,這有甚麼好處呢;
What profit is there, when the mules are white and sleek and well-fed, while you who sit upon them are thin and mangy and ill-favoured? What gain is there, when the coverings are soft and beautiful, full of much varied embroidery and art, while the soul is clothed in rags and naked and shameful? What gain is there, when the horse steps in orderly fashion, more like one dancing than walking, and is decked with bridal ornament along with its prancing;
34:268
while he who sits upon it hops about worse than the lame, and is more distorted in both hands and feet than drunkards and madmen? Tell me now: if someone gave you a beautiful horse, and yet twisted your body out of shape, what profit were it? Now you have a distorted soul, and you care nothing for it? Let us at some point take thought for our own selves, I beseech you.
34:269
Let us not render ourselves more contemptible than all things.
34:270
若有人用言語侮辱我們,我們便被刺痛、感到苦楚;
And if anyone insults us with words, we are stung and pained;
34:271
yet when by our deeds we insult our own selves, we take no heed.
34:272
Let us come to our senses at last, however late, that we may be able—by giving much care to the soul and by laying hold of virtue—to attain the eternal good things, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.
