And after they had kept silence, James answered, saying:
33:2
Men and brethren, hearken unto me.
33:3
Simeon has related how God first visited to take out of the Gentiles a people for his name. And to this agree the words of the prophets.
33:4
這人乃是耶路撒冷教會的監督;
This man was bishop of the Church in Jerusalem;
33:5
and the saying, By the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established, holds here.
33:6
And observe also his discernment, in confirming the word of the prophets both from new things and from old.
33:7
For he had no deed to point to, such as Peter, such as Paul.
33:8
And it is well arranged that these things should come to pass through those who were not going to reside in Jerusalem, and that this man who taught them should not be liable to blame, nor yet be cut off from their common mind.
33:9
And what does he say? Men and brethren, hearken unto me.
33:10
有人說這人就是路加所提到的那一位;
Some say that this is the man mentioned by Luke;
33:11
but others say he is another of the same name as this one.
33:12
Whether it be this one or that, we need not investigate with precision, but only accept as necessary the things which he expounded.
33:13
Great is the man's fairness, and this is a more consummate public address, seeing that he also puts an end to the matters.
33:14
How God first visited to take out of the Gentiles a people for his name.
33:15
And to this agree the words of the prophets.
33:16
Since that one was evident as regards the time, but did not carry authority because it was not ancient, he adds an ancient prophecy also, saying:
33:17
After these things I will return, and will rebuild the tabernacle of David which is fallen, and I will rebuild its ruins, and set it up again, that the residue of men may seek after the Lord, and all the nations upon whom my name has been called, says the Lord who does all these things.
33:18
What then? Was Jerusalem raised up, and not rather razed to the ground? But it is not concerning these things that this was said by him.
33:19
And of what raising up, he says, does he speak? Of that which came after Babylon.
33:20
'Known unto God from eternity are all His works.'
33:21
Then the credibility of the argument, namely, that there is nothing new, but that these things had been foreshadowed from the beginning.
33:22
'Wherefore I judge that we trouble not those who from among the Gentiles turn to God, but that we write unto them that they abstain from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood.'
33:23
'For Moses of old time hath in every city them that preach him, being read in the synagogues every sabbath day.'
33:24
Since they had not heard the Law, he fittingly enjoins these things from the Law, that he might not seem to abrogate it.
33:25
And observe how he does not leave them to hear these things from the Law, but from himself, saying:
33:26
'I judge,' that is, of myself, not having heard it from the Law.
33:27
Then thereafter the decree becomes a common one.
33:28
'Then it pleased the apostles and elders, with the whole Church, to choose men out of their own company, and send them to Antioch with Paul and Barnabas; namely, Judas surnamed Barsabas, and Silas, chief men among the brethren, writing by their hand as follows.'
33:29
Observe them, that it is not lightly that they lay down these ordinances.
33:30
But that the decree might become credible, they send those from among themselves; and that Paul's company might henceforth be free from suspicion.
33:31
And observe how heavily they charge against those men in their letter.
33:32
'The apostles and the elders and the brethren, unto the brethren which are of the Gentiles in Antioch and Syria and Cilicia, greeting.'
33:33
'Forasmuch as we have heard that certain who went out from us have troubled you with words, subverting your souls, saying that you must circumcise your children and keep the Law, to whom we gave no such commandment.'
33:34
This is a sufficient accusation of their rashness, and one worthy of the apostles' gentleness, in that they said nothing further.
33:35
'It seemed good unto us, being assembled with one accord, to choose out men and send them unto you, with our beloved Barnabas and Paul, men that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
33:36
So as to show that it was not done tyrannically, that all approve these things, that they write them after due deliberation.
33:37
'Having chosen,' he says, 'men out from among us.'
33:38
Then, that the sending of those men might not seem to be a reproach against Paul and Barnabas, observe the praises of them:
33:39
'Men,' he says, 'that have hazarded their lives for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.'
33:40
'We have therefore sent Judas and Silas, who shall also tell you the same things by word of mouth.'
33:41
'For it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us.'
33:42
Then there is nothing human in it, if these things seem good to the Spirit.
33:43
'To lay upon you no greater burden.'
33:44
Again he calls the Law a burden.
33:45
Then he even makes a defence on behalf of these very things.
33:46
'Save these necessary things, that ye abstain from things offered to idols, and from what is strangled, and from fornication, and from blood; from which if ye keep yourselves, ye shall do well.'
33:47
這些事新約並沒有吩咐;
These things the New Covenant did not enjoin;
33:48
因為基督從未論及這些事;
for nowhere did Christ discourse concerning them;
33:49
but they take these things from the Law.
33:50
Here he restrains murder.
33:51
'So they, when they were dismissed, came to Antioch; and having gathered the multitude together, they delivered the letter.'
33:52
'And when they had read it, they rejoiced for the consolation.'
33:53
Then, to make clear that those men also exhorted them, he added:
33:54
'And Judas and Silas, being themselves also prophets, exhorted the brethren with many words, and confirmed them.'
33:55
'And after they had tarried there a while, they were let go in peace from the brethren unto the apostles.'
33:56
從此不再有紛爭和爭鬥;
No longer are there seditions and strifes;
33:57
所以他們堅固了眾人以後,就平平安安地離去;
wherefore also, having confirmed them, they departed in peace;
33:58
因為他們先前對保羅較有爭競之心;
for they had been more contentiously disposed toward Paul;
33:59
and thereafter Paul teaches.
33:60
Thus there was no arrogance in the Church, but great good order.
33:61
並且要注意,彼得之後保羅發言,卻無人攔阻他;
And observe, after Peter, Paul speaks, and no one silences him;
33:62
雅各忍讓,並不憤然離席;
James forbears, and does not spring away;
33:63
for he had been entrusted with the chief authority.
33:64
約翰在此不發一言,其餘的使徒也不出聲,只是靜默,並不惱怒;
John says nothing here, nothing do the other apostles utter, but they keep silence, and are not indignant;
33:65
so pure of vainglory was their soul.
33:66
But let us look again from the beginning at what has been said.
33:67
'And after they had held their peace,' he says, 'James answered, saying:'
33:68
'Symeon hath declared how God first visited the Gentiles;'
33:69
from the outset Peter had discoursed more vehemently, but this man more gently.
33:70
Thus ought one who is in great power always to act: to yield the harsher matters to others, but himself to discourse on the gentler themes.
33:71
Well did he say, 'Symeon hath declared,' as though he too were stating the opinion of others.
33:72
Observe how he shows this to be a thing of old.
33:73
'To take out of the Gentiles a people,' he says, 'for His name.'
33:74
祂並非隨意揀選他們,乃是為著自己的名;
Not simply did He choose them, but for His name;
33:75
He is not ashamed to call His name a glory in the fore-choosing of the Gentiles.
33:76
Here too he hints at something great.
33:77
What is this? That, he says, these were before all.
33:78
'After these things I will return, and will rebuild,' he says, 'the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down.'
33:79
If one should consider it accurately, he would find the kingdom of David now standing.
33:80
For, His descendant reigning, this kingdom stands everywhere.
33:81
若無人順從,那些房屋和城邑又有何益處呢?既然眾人都甘願獻上自己的性命,那麼城邑被拆毀又有何損害呢?如此,這國不但屹立,反倒比萬國更加輝煌顯赫;
For what profit is there of houses and of a city, when there are none to obey? And what harm comes from the razing of the city, when all are willing to give up even their very souls? So that not only does it stand, but it has also become more illustrious than all;
33:82
for now it is sung throughout the whole world.
33:83
This too, therefore, must come to pass.
33:84
And having said, 'And I will rebuild,' he adds also the cause of the wherefore, saying:
33:85
'That the residue of men might seek after the Lord.'
33:86
If, then, on this account the city was raised up—because of Him who came from among them—it is clear that the calling of the Gentiles became the cause of the building of the city.
33:87
Who are 'the residue'? Those who were then left remaining.
33:88
But observe him keeping order too, and bringing them in as second.
33:89
'Thus says the Lord, who does all these things.'
33:90
祂不僅是說,也是行;
He does not merely speak, but also acts;
33:91
therefore the calling of the Gentiles is God's own work.
33:92
The point in question was another matter, which Peter also stated more plainly:
33:93
that they need not be circumcised.
33:94
Why then do you make this public speech? For they were not saying this, that one ought not to receive them when they believe, but that it must be with the Law.
33:95
這一點彼得在他的講論中已妥善說明;
And this Peter well set forth in his address;
33:96
but since this above all things disturbed the hearers, this too he again remedies.
33:97
你看,那需要立為法規的事,就是不必守律法,彼得已經引入;
And observe: what needed to be laid down as law—that one need not keep the Law—Peter introduced;
33:98
but as for our matter, which was long ago admitted, this man states, and he dwells upon that concerning which nothing has been written, so that, having healed their mind by means of what is conceded, he might at the fitting time introduce this also.
33:99
'Wherefore I judge that we trouble not those who from among the Gentiles turn to God;'
33:100
For if God has called them, and these observances overturn that calling, we are warring against God.
33:101
And well did he say, 'Those who from among the Gentiles turn to God,' thereby declaring also God's providential ordering from above concerning them,
33:102
and their obedience and readiness toward the calling.
33:103
What is the meaning of 'I judge'? It stands for, 'I say this with authority.'
33:104
'But that we write to them,' he says, 'to abstain from the pollutions of idols, and from fornication, and from what is strangled, and from blood.'
33:105
For these, though bodily things, were nevertheless necessary to be observed, since they wrought great evils.
33:106
And lest anyone should object, 'Why do we not enjoin the same things upon the Jews also?' he added, saying:
33:107
'Moses of old generations has in every city those who preach him'; that is, Moses is continually expounded to them.
33:108
For this is the meaning of, 'Being read every sabbath.'
33:109
在無害之處,神給他們設立了教師,並賜下毫不攔阻的恩典,准許猶太人在凡事上聽從他,同時卻把外邦出身的人領離;
Where it did no harm, He set over them a teacher, and bestowed a grace that hindered nothing, permitting the Jews to hear him in all things, while leading away those from among the Gentiles;
33:110
then, by the very means through which He seemed to honor him and to set him over His own people, by these same means He led the Gentiles away from him.
33:111
Why then do they not learn from him? Because of their own disobedience.
33:112
Hence he shows that these too need observe nothing further.
33:113
But if we do not write to them, it is not as though they owed it to observe anything more, but because they have him who speaks.
33:114
他沒有說「不要絆倒他們,也不要傾覆他們」——這是保羅對加拉太人所說的——乃是說「不可難為他們」;
And he did not say, 'Not to give them offense, nor to overthrow them'—which is what Paul says to the Galatians—but, 'Not to trouble them';
33:115
which shows that it was no achievement of theirs, but merely a matter of annoyance.
33:116
And he seems, on the one hand, to keep the Law by taking these things from it; yet, on the other, he dissolved it by taking only these.
33:117
其實他曾多次與他們論到這些事;
And yet many times he had discoursed with them concerning these matters;
33:118
but so that he might seem both to honor the Law, and to speak these things not as from Moses but as from the Apostles, and that he might make the commandments many, he divided the one.
33:119
This above all gave them rest.
33:120
And the dispute too came about by a wise dispensation, so that after the dispute the decree might stand the more firmly.
33:121
'Then it seemed good to the Apostles,' he says, 'to send men who were leaders among the brethren.'
33:122
他們所差的不是隨便甚麼人,乃是揀選出來作領袖的;
Not chance persons, but leaders they send, having chosen them out;
33:123
'To those at Antioch,' he says, 'and Syria and Cilicia,' where the disease had been born.
33:124
你看他們對那些人並不說甚麼苛刻的話,只專注一事,就是要推翻那已發生的事;
Observe how they say nothing burdensome against those men, but look only to one thing—to overturn what had been done;
33:125
for this was what made even those who were in dissension there confess agreement.
33:126
他們沒有說「那些欺哄人的、那些敗壞人的」,以及諸如此類的話;
They did not say, 'those deceivers, those destroyers,' and such like;
33:127
然而在需要之處,保羅確曾這樣行,正如他所說的;
and yet, where it was needful, Paul does this, as when he says;
33:128
but here, since the matter had been set right, there was no longer any need.
33:129
你看,他們並不這樣說「有幾個從我們中間出去的吩咐你們守律法」;
And observe, they do not put it thus, that 'certain from among us commanded you to keep the Law';
33:130
but, 'They troubled you with words, unsettling you.'
33:131
沒有比這詞語更貼切的了;
Nothing is more apt than the expression;
33:132
'The souls already made firm,' he says, 'they were unsettling,' as though, in the case of a building, they were pulling down what had been erected by those others.
33:133
'To whom,' he says, 'we gave no commandment.'
33:134
'It seemed good therefore to us, being assembled with one accord, together with our beloved.'
33:135
他們既是所親愛的,就不至輕看他們;
If they are beloved, they will not despise them;
33:136
if they gave up their souls, they too are worthy of trust.
33:137
'We have sent therefore,' he says, 'Judas and Silas, who themselves also by word of mouth announce the same things.'
33:138
For it was necessary that not only the letter should be present, lest they should say that they had wrested things, that they said one thing instead of another.
33:139
The commendation concerning Paul stopped their mouths.
33:140
For this reason neither Paul comes alone nor Barnabas, but others also from the Church, that it might not be suspect, since he himself was upholding the decree, nor those from Jerusalem alone.
33:141
他表明他們何等值得信賴;
He shows how worthy of trust they are;
33:142
他說,他們並不把自己與他們同列;
not making themselves equal, he says;
33:143
正因這緣故,他也加上「這些人是為我主耶穌基督的名不顧性命的」這話;
for this very reason he also added the words, 'Men who have given up their souls for the name of our Lord Jesus Christ';
33:144
他為何說「聖靈和我們認為好」,其實只說「聖靈」也就夠了呢?說「聖靈」是為免他們以為這事出於人意;
and for what cause did he say, 'It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us,' although it would have sufficed to say, 'To the Holy Spirit'? The phrase 'To the Holy Spirit' was so that they might not think it human;
33:145
and the phrase 'to us,' that they might be taught that they themselves also both accept it, even though they are in circumcision.
33:146
'To lay upon you no greater burden,' he says.
33:147
他們說這些話,因為這話所對的仍是些軟弱且懼怕的人;
They say these things because the word was still addressed to men who were weak and fearful;
33:148
for this reason this too is added.
33:149
He shows that the word was not one of condescension, nor
33:150
好像他們寬容他們,也不是把他們當作軟弱的人看待;
as though they spared them, nor as of weak persons;
33:151
因為連眾教師所存的敬重也是很大的;
for great also was the reverence shown by the teachers;
33:152
for that was a superfluous burden.
33:153
你看這封書信何等簡短,別無他物,既無精心的鋪陳,也無推理的論證,只是一道命令;
Observe a brief letter, having nothing more, neither elaborate constructions nor syllogisms, but a command;
33:154
for it was the legislation of the Spirit.
33:155
Again and again they call it a burden.
33:156
'And having again gathered the multitude, they delivered the letter.'
33:157
書信之後,他們自己也用言語加以勸勉;
After the letter, they themselves also exhort with the word;
33:158
for this too was needful, so as to be freed from all suspicion.
33:159
And these men also, he says, being themselves prophets, exhorted the brethren with much discourse.
33:160
Here he shows their trustworthiness.
33:161
For Paul indeed was also able to do it.
33:162
And after they had spent some time there, they were let go in peace.
33:163
No longer any sedition, no longer any turning away.
33:164
Here it seems to me that they received the right hand of fellowship, as he himself says: 'They gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship.'
33:165
Then he says that 'They added nothing to me.'
33:166
For they ratified his judgment; they praised it and marveled at it.
33:167
they commended it and admired it.
33:168
他顯明,這事甚至憑人的推理也能看出,何況單憑聖靈更是如此,就是他們所犯的罪並不容易糾正;
He shows that it was possible to perceive this even from human reasonings, still less only from the Spirit—namely, that they had sinned a sin not easy to be corrected;
33:169
for such matters do not require the Spirit.
33:170
He shows that the other things are not necessary, but superfluous, if indeed these are necessary.
33:171
'From which if you keep yourselves,' he says, 'you will do well.'
33:172
He shows that they lack nothing, but that this suffices.
33:173
For indeed it was possible even without a letter, but in order that there might be a written law, they send an epistle.
33:174
And again, in order that they might be persuaded to obey the ordinance, they spoke both to those men, and those men did this, and that in peace.
33:175
Let us not then be scandalized on account of the heretics.
33:176
你看,在傳道之初,就有何等多的絆腳石;
For see how many stumbling-blocks there were at the very outset of the preaching;
33:177
I do not speak of those from without.
33:178
For example, first Ananias, then the murmuring, then Simon Magus, then those who accused Peter on account of Cornelius, then the famine, then this very chief of the evils.
33:179
For it is not possible, when some good thing is being done, that an evil thing should not also arise alongside it.
33:180
Let us not then be troubled if some are scandalized, but rather let us give thanks to God even on their account, because He makes us more approved.
33:181
For not only tribulations, but even the very temptations themselves make us more illustrious.
33:182
因為一個人若在無人迷惑他之時持守真理,還算不得是真理熱切的愛慕者;
For he who, when there is no one to deceive him, holds fast to the truth, would not be an ardent lover of the truth;
33:183
but he who, when many are dragging him away, still holds fast—this man is approved.
33:184
那麼怎樣呢?絆腳石是為此才出現的嗎?我並不是說這些事是神所行的;
What then? Is it for this reason that the stumbling-blocks occur? I do not say that God does these things;
33:185
乃是說,祂甚至藉著那些人的邪惡使我們得益處;
but that even from their wickedness He does us good;
33:186
since He Himself never willed that they should come to pass.
33:187
'Grant to them,' He says, 'that they may be one;'
33:188
but since the stumbling-blocks do occur, they in no way harm these, but even profit them.
33:189
Just as, then, those who drag men to martyrdom, though unwillingly, benefit the martyrs—yet they are not impelled to this by God—
33:190
so also here, let us not look merely at the fact that some are scandalized.
33:191
這件事本身正是這教義美好的憑據,就是許多人假冒並仿效它;
This very thing is a proof that the doctrine is excellent—that many counterfeit and imitate it;
33:192
for they would not counterfeit it, if it were not good.
33:193
And this I will now make plain to you.
33:194
These fragrant perfumes have those who adulterate them—for instance, the spice-leaf amomum.
33:195
For because they are rare and precious, many spurious imitations are made.
33:196
No one, then, would choose to counterfeit any of the cheap things.
33:197
純潔的生活有許多人假冒它;
The pure life has many who counterfeit it;
33:198
but no one would choose to feign the man of worthless character, but rather the man of the monastic life.
33:199
那麼我們對希臘人(外邦人)要說甚麼呢?一個希臘人來說:「我願意作基督徒,卻不知道該歸附於誰;
What then shall we say to the Greeks? A Greek comes and says: 'I wish to become a Christian, but I do not know to whom to attach myself;
33:200
你們中間有許多爭鬥和紛爭,有許多喧擾;
there is much strife and sedition among you, much tumult;
33:201
which doctrine shall I choose? What shall I take? Each one says: I speak the truth.'
33:202
'To whom shall I give heed, knowing nothing at all of the Scriptures? And those others put forward the same claim.'
33:203
Εἰ μὲν.
因為我們若說人當憑推理去信服,他這樣喧嚷也是有理的;
For if we said that men should be persuaded by reasonings, he would rightly be in an uproar;
33:204
but if we say that we believe the Scriptures, and these are simple and true, the matter to be judged is easy for you.
33:205
凡與那些經文相符的,這人就是基督徒;
If anyone agrees with those Scriptures, this man is a Christian;
33:206
if anyone contends against them, this man is far from this rule.
33:207
What then, if that man comes and says that the Scripture has this meaning, while you say another, and you expound the Scriptures otherwise,
33:208
dragging their meanings this way and that? 'You then,' tell me, 'have you no understanding nor judgment?' 'And how,' he says, 'could I, who do not even know how to judge your matters? I wish to become a disciple, but you are already making me a teacher.'
33:209
他若說這些話,那麼——有人問——我們該怎樣回答?我們怎能說服他?讓我們問問,這些是不是只是託辭和藉口;
If he says these things, what, he asks, shall we answer? How shall we persuade him? Let us ask whether these are not a mere excuse and pretext;
33:210
let us ask whether he has condemned the Greeks.
33:211
for surely, unless he had condemned them, he would not come over to our side.
33:212
讓我們問問,他定他們罪的緣由是甚麼;
Let us ask the reasons for which he condemned them;
33:213
It is quite plain that he will say it is because they are creatures and not the uncreated God.
33:214
If, then, he finds this among the other heresies, but the contrary among us, what need is there of argument? We all confess that Christ is God.
33:215
But let us see who contend and who do not contend.
33:216
我們既稱祂為神,所講的也是與神相稱的,就是祂有權柄,祂不是奴僕,祂是自由的,祂憑自己行一切的事;
We, when we call Him God, also utter things worthy of God—that He has authority, that He is not a servant, that He is free, that He does all things of Himself;
33:217
Again I ask: if you were about to learn medicine, would you, tell me, simply and at random accept the things said? And yet there are many doctrines among those practitioners.
33:218
那麼,你若只是聽甚麼就接受甚麼,這就不是有理智之人所當有的;
If, then, you simply accept whatever you hear, this is not the mark of a man;
33:219
but if you have judgment and understanding, you will by all means know what is good.
33:220
我們說「子」,並且證實我們所說的是真的;
We say 'Son,' and we prove true what we say;
33:221
but those others say it indeed, yet do not truly confess it.
33:222
為要說得更明白些:那些人各有其得名的某些人,顯然就是那異端首領本身的名字,各異端也是如此;
And that I may speak still more plainly: those men have certain persons from whom they are named—evidently the name of the heresiarch himself, and likewise each heresy;
33:223
but among us no man gave us our name, but the faith itself.
33:224
But this is a mere excuse and pretext.
33:225
因為告訴我,你若要買一件衣服,儘管你完全不懂織布的手藝,為甚麼卻不說這樣的話——「我不會買,他們在欺哄我」;
For why, tell me, if you were about to buy a garment, though wholly unskilled in the weaver's art, do you not say these words—'I do not know how to make the purchase, they are deceiving me';
33:226
反倒盡力去弄明白呢?就是你想買別的任何東西,你也是竭力探究,樣樣打聽;
but you do everything so as to learn? And if you wish to buy anything else whatever, you do everything, inquiring diligently;
33:227
So that, on this pretext, you will accept nothing at all.
33:228
For suppose there is someone holding no doctrine at all: if that man too were to say concerning the Christians what you say—'This is so great a multitude of men, and they hold differing doctrines;'
33:229
One man is a Greek, another a Jew, and another a Christian.
33:230
There is not even a single doctrine that one ought to accept without examination.
33:231
But I am a disciple, and I have no wish to be a judge, nor shall I presume to pass sentence upon a single doctrine.
33:232
This pretext of yours no longer has any ground to stand upon.
33:233
For just as men had the strength to cast out the spurious, so you too, when you come here, will have the strength to test what is profitable.
33:234
For the man who has condemned no doctrine at all will readily say these things.
33:235
But he who has condemned it, even if he has not yet chosen anything, as he advances along the way will be able to discern what is fitting.
33:236
Let us then make no excuses, nor put forward pretexts.
33:237
Do you wish me to show you that these are but pretexts? Do you know the things that ought to be done, and the things that ought not? Why then do you not do the things that ought to be done, but rather those that ought not? Do those things, and with upright reasoning seek from God, and He will by all means reveal it to you.
33:238
God, he says, is no respecter of persons.
33:239
But in every nation he that fears Him and works righteousness is acceptable to Him.
33:240
It is not possible that one who listens without prejudice should fail to be persuaded.
33:241
因為正如假若有一把準繩,凡物都須照它校正,那就無需多加省察,反倒容易尋得那按此度量之人;
For just as, if there were some measuring-rule to which everything had to be made straight, there would be no need of much inquiry, but it would be easy to take hold of the one who applies the measure;
33:242
How then is it that they do not see clearly? Many things bring this about, both prejudice and human motives.
33:243
This too, he says, both concerning us and concerning them, they allege.
33:244
How so? Have we been cut off from the Church? Do we have heresiarchs? Are we called by the names of men? Is there any founder set over us, as Marcion is over one, Manichaeus over another, Arius over another, and over yet another some other originator of heresy? And even if we too bear the appellation of someone, yet it is not of those who began a heresy, but of those who presided over us and steered the Church.
33:245
我們在地上沒有師傅;
We have no teachers upon the earth;
33:246
we have one, He who is in the heavens.
33:247
Those too, he says, put forward the same claims.
33:248
But the very name stands over them, accusing them and stopping their mouths.
33:249
Many have been Greeks, and none of them asked these things; and among the philosophers too these questions existed, yet none of those who held the right school of thought was hindered.
33:250
我曾說過,當他們挑起這些爭議時,這些人和那些人都是猶太人;
I said, when they were stirring up these questions, that both these and those are Jews;
33:251
whom must we obey? But they were persuaded as they ought to have been.
33:252
Let us therefore also obey the laws of God, and do all things according to what seems good to Him, and order our lives according to His will, while we are still in this present life, so that, having passed the remaining time of our life in virtue, we may be able to attain the good things promised to those who love Him, and be counted worthy of honor together with those who have pleased Him, by the grace and loving-kindness of His only-begotten Son, and of the all-holy and life-giving Spirit, the one and true Godhead, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
