And it came to pass, that, when I had returned to Jerusalem, while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance, and saw Him saying unto me:
49:2
Make haste, and get quickly out of Jerusalem, for they will not receive thy testimony concerning Me. And I said:
49:3
主啊,他們自己知道,從前我把信你的人下在監裡,又在各會堂裡鞭打他們;
Lord, they themselves know that I was imprisoning and beating in the synagogues those who believed on Thee;
49:4
and when the blood of Stephen Thy martyr was being shed, I also was standing by, and consenting to his slaying, and keeping the garments of those who slew him.
49:5
See how he thrusts himself into dangers.
49:6
And it came to pass, that, when I had returned to Jerusalem—
49:7
that is, After that vision I came again to Jerusalem.
49:8
And while I prayed in the temple, I fell into a trance, and saw Him saying unto me:
49:9
Make haste, and get quickly out, for they will not receive thee.
49:10
Observe, not even this is without attestation, but the testimony comes from the outcome.
49:11
祂說:他們必不接受你的見證;
He said: They will not receive thy testimony;
49:12
and yet, from reasoning, one would have supposed that they would certainly receive it.
49:13
For I was the one imprisoning and beating them, he says.
49:14
因此,正為這緣故他們理當接受他;
So that for this reason they ought to have received him;
49:15
wherefore he learns even this in the trance—that his testimony would not be received.
49:16
在此他確立了兩件事:其一,他們無可推諉;
Here he establishes two things: both that they are without excuse;
49:17
因為他們逼迫他並非出於情理,也非出於道理;
for they were not persecuting him according to what was probable, nor according to reason;
49:18
and that Christ was God, prophesying things contrary to expectation, and not seeing merely what had come to pass, but foreknowing what was to come.
49:19
How then does He say, 'He shall bear My name before the Gentiles, and kings, and the children of Israel'? 'He shall bear it,' He said; He did not say that he would altogether persuade them.
49:20
Otherwise the Jews were in other places persuaded, but here they were not.
49:21
Precisely where they most ought to have been persuaded—since they knew his former zeal—there they were not persuaded.
49:22
'And when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by, and consenting to his death.'
49:23
Observe again where the discourse ends—in the most forcible point.
49:24
For he shows that it was he himself who was the persecutor, and not merely the persecutor, but one who by countless hands was slaying Stephen.
49:25
He reminded them of a grievous act of bloodshed.
49:26
Then indeed above all they could not endure it, since this was what convicted them.
49:27
And already the prophecy was being fulfilled.
49:28
The zeal, then, was great, and the accusation vehement, and the witnesses of the truth of Christ were speaking with boldness.
49:29
But the Jews would no longer bear to hear the whole of his public address, but, greatly inflamed with wrath, they cried out.
49:30
'Depart, for I will send you far away unto the Gentiles.'
49:31
Now they listened to him up to this word, and then they lifted up their voice, saying:
49:32
'Away with such a fellow from the earth!'
49:33
And as they were crying out and throwing off their garments and casting dust into the air, the tribune commanded that he be brought into the barracks, giving orders that he be examined by scourging, so that he might know for what cause they were thus clamoring against him.
49:34
其實那千夫長本應查明這些事是否屬實,或當查問那些人自己;
Now the tribune ought to have examined whether these things were so, or even those very men themselves;
49:35
but he, doing nothing further, gives orders to examine him by scourging.
49:36
'For he commanded that he be brought,' it says, 'into the barracks, saying that he be examined by scourging, so that he might know for what cause they were thus crying out against him.'
49:37
他理當從那些喧嚷的人那裡查明,並問他們是否能指出所講之話中有何可指摘之處;
And indeed he ought to have learned from those who were clamoring, and to have asked whether they had any hold on any of the things that had been spoken;
49:38
他卻只是憑權柄行事,一味討他們的喜歡;
but he simply uses his authority, and acts to gratify them;
49:39
for he was not seeking how he might do anything justly, but how he might quell their wrath, which was unjust.
49:40
But as they stretched him out with the thongs, he said to the centurion who stood by:
49:41
「一個羅馬人,又未經定罪,你們就鞭打他,這是合法的嗎?」保羅稱自己為羅馬人,絕不是說謊——斷乎不是;
'Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?' Paul did not lie—God forbid—in calling himself a Roman;
49:42
wherefore also the tribune, on hearing it, is afraid.
49:43
And why, one asks, was he afraid? Had it been lawful for you to do anything else, he would have feared lest he be convicted and pay a heavier penalty.
49:44
And observe, he does not say simply, but, 'Is it lawful for you?' Two are the charges: both the acting without a hearing, and his being a Roman.
49:45
在那時,凡被算為配得如此稱呼的人,都享有極大的特權;
Those who were deemed worthy to be so called had at that time a great privilege;
49:46
並非人人都能得著這身分;
and not all obtained this;
49:47
for they say that it was from Hadrian's time that all came to be named Romans, but in old times it was not so.
49:48
又或者,他自稱是羅馬人,是為要脫離那刑罰;
Or else he called himself a Roman in order to escape the punishment;
49:49
因為他若被鞭打了,就會成為被人輕看的對象;
for he would have become an object of contempt had he been scourged;
49:50
but now, by saying this, he casts them into greater fear.
49:51
For had they scourged him, they might even have perverted the matter, or even have put him to death.
49:52
Observe how God permits many things to happen also in a human way, both in their case and in that of the rest.
49:53
那千夫長回答說:「我用了許多銀子才得著這公民權,」這表明他懷疑保羅自稱羅馬人不過是個藉口;
And the tribune, answering that 'With a great sum I obtained this citizenship,' shows that he suspected it to be a mere pretext that Paul called himself a Roman;
49:54
and perhaps he conceived this from the apparent lowliness of Paul.
49:55
And the centurion, when he heard it, went to the tribune and reported, saying:
49:56
'For this man is a Roman.'
49:57
And the tribune came and said to him:
49:58
'Tell me, are you a Roman?' And he said:
49:59
'I obtained this citizenship with a great sum.'
49:60
And immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him.
49:61
And the tribune also was afraid when he learned that he was a Roman, and that he had bound him.
49:62
'But I,' he says, 'was even born so.'
49:63
So then he was also of a Roman father.
49:64
What then comes of this? Having loosed him, he brought him down to the Jews.
49:65
可見他自稱是羅馬人並非虛言,因他也藉此得了益處,脫去了捆綁;
Thus it was no falsehood to say that he was a Roman, since he even profited from it, being loosed from his bond.
49:66
次日,千夫長因要確實知道猶太人控告他的緣由,就把他釋放,吩咐祭司長和全公會都聚集;
On the next day, wishing to know the certainty—what he was accused of by the Jews—he loosed him, and commanded the chief priests and all the council to assemble;
49:67
and having brought Paul down, he set him before them.
49:68
And Paul, looking earnestly at the council, said:
49:69
He no longer addresses the tribune, but the multitude and the whole people.
49:70
And what does he say? 'Men and brethren, I have lived before God in all good conscience until this day.'
49:71
'I am conscious of nothing in myself wherein I have wronged you, nor of doing anything worthy of these bonds.'
49:72
那大祭司又怎樣行呢?他本應因這人為討他們喜歡而被不義地捆綁而心中扎痛,反倒變本加厲,下令打他;
What then does the high priest do? When he ought to have been pricked to the heart at the man's being unjustly bound to gratify them, he instead adds still more, and commands that he be struck;
49:73
which is also plain from what follows.
49:74
And the high priest Ananias commanded those who stood by him to strike him on the mouth.
49:75
Then Paul said to him:
49:76
'God is about to strike you, you whitewashed wall!'
49:77
'And do you sit judging me according to the law, and, contrary to the law, command me to be struck?' And those who stood by said:
49:78
'Do you revile God's high priest?' And Paul said:
49:79
「弟兄們,我不曉得他是大祭司;
'I did not know, brethren, that he was the high priest;
49:80
for it is written, You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'
49:81
有些人說,他明知故問,是在說反話;
Now some say that, knowing this, he speaks with irony;
49:82
但依我看來,他實在全然不知道那人是大祭司;
but to me it seems that he did not at all know that he was the high priest;
49:83
wherefore also he makes his defense as though there were an accusation, and adds:
49:84
'You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'
49:85
For if he had not been a ruler, ought one simply to insult another? By no means, but rather to bear it even when insulted.
49:86
然而值得探究的是:這同一個人在別處說「被人辱罵,我們就祝福;被人逼迫,我們就忍受」,在此處卻反其道而行,不但辱罵,甚至還咒詛,這是為何呢?斷乎不然!細看之下,這兩樣他都沒有做;
But it is worth inquiring how, when the same man elsewhere says, 'Being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we endure it,' here he does the contrary, and not only reviles, but even calls down a curse. Away with the thought! He is seen to have done neither of these;
49:87
在細心察究的人看來,這些話乃是出於放膽直言,而非出於怒氣;
but to one who examines carefully, the words are of boldness rather than of wrath;
49:88
and besides, he did not wish to appear contemptible to the tribune.
49:89
For if he had refrained from scourging him on the ground that the man was about to be handed over to the Jews, the very fact of his being beaten by the servants would only have made that other more insolent.
49:90
For this reason he does not direct his words to the servant, but to the very one who gave the order, thus establishing his point.
49:91
And in saying, 'You whitewashed wall, do you also sit judging me according to the law?' he was all but saying to him this:
49:92
You who are yourself liable and deserving of ten thousand stripes.
49:93
Observe, then, how the people were struck with amazement at his boldness.
49:94
For when they ought to have overturned everything, they rather behave with drunken violence.
49:95
But he even reads out the law, since he wishes to show that he spoke these things thus not out of fear, nor because it was unworthy to hear, but because here too he was obeying the law.
49:96
And I am firmly persuaded that he did not know that the man was high priest, since he had returned after a long time and did not associate continually with the Jews, and since he saw that man too in the midst of many others.
49:97
For the high priest was no longer distinguishable, there being many and diverse persons present.
49:98
So it seems to me that he directed this too against them, showing that he obeys the law, and for this reason makes his defense.
49:99
But let us look at what has been said from the beginning.
49:100
'While I was praying,' he says, 'in the temple, it came to pass that I was in a trance.'
49:101
In order to make clear that it was not merely an apparition, for this reason he added, 'While I was praying.'
49:102
'Make haste and get out quickly,' he says, 'because they will not receive your testimony.'
49:103
Here he shows that he did not flee out of fear of their perils, but because they did not accept his testimony.
49:104
But why did he say, 'They themselves know that I was imprisoning'? Not that he was contradicting Christ—God forbid!—
49:105
but because he desired to learn the reason for so paradoxical a thing.
49:106
'Go,' he says, 'for I will send you far away to the Gentiles.'
49:107
Christ did not teach him what he must do, but only told him to depart, and he obeys.
49:108
'And they lifted up their voices,' he says, 'saying:'
49:109
'And indeed it is not fitting that you should live'—not this man who obeys God in all things.
49:110
'And shaking out their garments,' he says, 'they threw dust.'
49:111
They do this so as to make the uproar more violent, or else wishing to strike fear into the commander.
49:112
They do not state the charge, since they had nothing to say, but they suppose that they will overwhelm him by their shouting.
49:113
And yet it was from the accusers that he ought to have learned the matter.
49:114
'And the chief captain was afraid,' he says, 'when he learned that he was a Roman.'
49:115
So then it was no lie for Paul to say that he was himself a Roman.
49:116
'And he loosed him from his bonds,' he says, 'and having brought him down, set him before the council.'
49:117
This he ought to have done from the very beginning, neither to have bound him, nor to have wished to scourge him, but to have left him alone, since he had done no such thing as to deserve being bound.
49:118
'And he loosed him,' he says, 'and having brought him down, set him among them.'
49:119
This above all left the Jews at a loss.
49:120
'And Paul, looking intently at the council,' he says, 'said:'
49:121
Here he shows his boldness, his undauntedness.
49:122
But observe also the shamelessness of those men.
49:123
'And the high priest Ananias commanded them to strike him on the mouth.'
49:124
Why do you strike him? For what insolent thing did he say? Oh, the shamelessness!
49:125
'Then Paul,' he says, 'said to him:'
49:126
'God is about to strike you, you whitewashed wall.'
49:127
他揭露那人犯了假冒為善與違背律法之罪;
He exposes him as guilty of hypocrisy and lawlessness;
49:128
and for this very reason he is also brought low.
49:129
And he himself, being at a loss, dares to say nothing, but those standing by him, unable to bear his boldness—
49:130
thus they saw a man ready to die, and they did not restrain themselves.
49:131
'I did not know,' he says, 'that he is high priest.'
49:132
由此可見,那斥責乃是出於不知情;
So then the rebuke was one of ignorance;
49:133
for if this had not been so, even if he had taken him he would have gone away and not kept silent, or else the chief captain would have handed him over to them.
49:134
在此他表明,他所受的苦乃是甘心承受的;
Here he shows that he willingly suffers what he suffers;
49:135
如此他向他們作出申辯,乃是出於順從律法,並非因為想在他們面前炫耀;
and thus he makes his defense to them out of obedience to the law, not because he wished to make a display before them;
49:136
since he had utterly condemned those men.
49:137
所以他作申辯乃是為律法的緣故,而不是為那百姓的緣故;
It is for the law's sake, then, that he makes his defense, and not for the people's sake;
49:138
for to put to death one who had done no wrong, and that too an innocent man, was contrary to the law.
49:139
Therefore neither was what he said an insult—unless one were also to call Christ's words an insult, when He says:
49:140
'Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, because you are like whitewashed walls.'
49:141
But if he had said it before being struck, it would not have been from anger, but from boldness.
49:142
But they will say the reason, that he did not wish to be despised.
49:143
And indeed Christ in many places reproached the Jews when He Himself was reproached, as when He says:
49:144
'Do not think that I will accuse you.'
49:145
But this is not an insult—God forbid!
49:146
Observe, then, with how much gentleness he converses with those men.
49:147
'I did not know that he is high priest,' he says, 'of God.'
49:148
He said this, and did not stop there, but showing that he is not being ironical, he adds:
49:149
'You shall not speak evil of a ruler of your people.'
49:150
You see how he still acknowledges him even as a ruler? Let us then also learn gentleness, that we may be complete in both respects.
49:151
因為需要極大的精確,才能分辨這是哪一種、那又是哪一種;
For much precision is needed, so as to learn what is the one and what is the other;
49:152
之所以需要精確,是因為惡行緊挨著這些美德——坦然無懼旁邊是魯莽狂妄,溫和旁邊是懦弱怯懦;
and precision is needed because vices stand close beside these virtues—beside boldness, rashness; beside gentleness, cowardice;
49:153
人必須謹慎察看四周,免得有人握著惡行,卻好像擁有美德;
and one must look carefully around, lest anyone, while holding the vice, should seem to possess the virtue;
49:154
just as if someone, thinking he is consorting with the mistress, should unwittingly be keeping company with the maidservant.
49:155
那麼何為溫和,何為懦弱呢?當別人受欺壓時我們不為他們伸張,反倒自己緘默,這就是懦弱;
What, then, is gentleness, and what is cowardice? When we do not defend others who are being wronged, but ourselves keep silent, this is cowardice;
49:156
but when we ourselves, suffering ill, bear it patiently, this is gentleness.
49:157
What is boldness? Again the same thing: when we contend on behalf of others.
49:158
And what is rashness? When we wish to avenge ourselves on our own behalf.
49:159
Thus magnanimity and boldness of speech go together, and again rashness and cowardice.
49:160
因為凡不為自己感到痛苦的人,也難為別人感到痛苦;
For he who feels no pain on his own behalf will scarcely feel pain on behalf of others;
49:161
and he who does not defend himself will hardly fail to leave others undefended.
49:162
For when our character is pure and free from passion, it receives strength.
49:163
Just as a pure body receives strength from a fever, so too the soul, if it be not corrupted along with the passions, receives strength.
49:164
偉大力量的標記乃是溫和寬容;
A mark of great strength is forbearance;
49:165
for forbearance there is need of a noble, vigorous, and exceedingly lofty soul.
49:166
難道你以為受了虧待卻不動怒暴烈是件小事嗎?若有人稱那為鄰舍所付出的關懷為一種勇毅,也不算錯;
Or do you think it a small thing to suffer evil and yet not grow savage? And one would not err in calling the care exercised on behalf of one's neighbours a kind of manliness;
49:167
for he who has become so strong as to be able to overcome so great a passion will be strong enough also to venture against another.
49:168
例如,這裏有兩種情慾:怯懦與忿怒;
For example, these are two passions, cowardice and wrath;
49:169
你若制伏了忿怒,顯然也必制伏怯懦;
if you master wrath, it is plain that you will master cowardice too;
49:170
而你藉著溫和寬容制伏忿怒;
and you master wrath by being forbearing;
49:171
therefore if you master cowardice too, you will be courageous.
49:172
反之,你若不勝過忿怒,就成了魯莽的人;
Again, if you do not overcome wrath, you have become rash;
49:173
既不能勝過這個,也就不能勝過懼怕;
and not overcoming this, neither are you able to overcome fear;
49:174
這就好比一個身體如此虛弱、體質失調,以致經不起任何勞苦;
and it comes to the same thing as if a body were so weak and ill-tempered as to hold out against no hardship;
49:175
這樣的身體無論遇冷遇熱,都很快被擊倒;
such a body is quickly overcome both by cold and by heat;
49:176
for the ill-tempered constitution is of this sort, but the well-tempered one withstands all things.
49:177
再者,寬宏大量是一種美德,而緊挨在它旁邊的是揮霍浪費;
Again, magnanimity is a virtue, and standing close beside it is prodigality;
49:178
有一種美德是善於治家,作忠信的管家;
there is good management as a virtue, and being a good steward;
49:179
standing close beside it are stinginess and pettiness.
49:180
Come then, let us again gather the virtues together.
49:181
The prodigal, then, is not magnanimous.
49:182
為甚麼呢?因為凡被萬般情慾所擄的人,怎能算是心靈偉大的呢?這並不是輕看錢財,乃是被別的情慾所轄制;
How so? For he who is captured by ten thousand passions, how could he be great of soul? For this is not to despise money, but to be commanded by other passions;
49:183
正如一個人若被強盜命令去聽從他們,他就算不得自由;
just as if a man were commanded by robbers to obey them, he would not be free;
49:184
因為那揮霍並非出於輕看錢財,乃是出於不懂得如何妥善料理它;
for the spending does not come from despising money, but from not knowing how to manage it rightly;
49:185
since, if it were possible both to keep those things and to enjoy them, he would have wished it so.
49:186
惟有按需要花費錢財的人,這人才是寬宏大量的;
But he who spends his money as need requires, this man is magnanimous;
49:187
for truly great is the soul which is not enslaved to passion, which regards money as nothing.
49:188
再者,善於治家是件美事;
Again, good management is a fine thing;
49:189
so too the best steward would be he who spends as need requires, and not simply without management.
49:190
But stinginess is not the same thing.
49:191
因為前者按需要把一切花費得宜;
For the one spends everything as need requires;
49:192
but the other, even when necessary need demands it, will not touch the substance of his money.
49:193
The good steward, therefore, may be called the brother of the magnanimous man.
49:194
因此我們要把寬宏大量的人與善於治家的人並列,也把揮霍浪費的人與小氣吝嗇的人並列;
Therefore we shall place together the magnanimous man and the good steward, and the prodigal and the stingy man;
49:195
for both these suffer this from smallness of soul, just as those others owe theirs to magnanimity.
49:196
所以,我們不要稱那只管花費的人為寬宏大量,乃要稱那按需要花費的人為寬宏大量;
Let us not, then, call magnanimous the man who simply spends, but the man who spends as need requires;
49:197
nor call the good steward stingy and miserly, but only him who spares his money at the wrong time.
49:198
那財主穿著紫色袍和細麻布,花費了多少呢?然而他並不是寬宏大量的;
How much did that rich man spend, clothing himself in purple and fine linen? Yet he was not magnanimous;
49:199
因為他的靈魂被殘忍和萬般宴樂所轄制;
for his soul was held fast by cruelty and by ten thousand pleasures;
49:200
and how could such a soul be great? Abraham was magnanimous, spending on the reception of strangers, slaughtering the calf, and, where it was required, sparing not only his money but not even his own life.
49:201
If, therefore, we see someone setting out a costly table, keeping harlots and parasites, let us not call this man magnanimous, but exceedingly small of soul.
49:202
你看他作了多少情慾的奴僕、受它們的轄制:貪食、不正當的宴樂、諂媚奉承;
For see to how many passions he is enslaved and subject: gluttony, unseemly pleasure, flattery;
49:203
這樣一個被如此眾多情慾所纏住、連其中一樣也逃不脫的人,有誰能稱他為寬宏大量呢?如此,正當他花費最多的時候,我們也最要稱他為心靈狹小的人;
and him who is held in the grip of so many, unable to escape even one of them, how could anyone call magnanimous? So that we shall then most of all call him small of soul, precisely when he spends the most;
49:204
因為他花費得越豪奢,就越顯出那些情慾的暴政;
for the more lavishly he spends, the more he displays the tyranny of those passions;
49:205
for if they did not strongly rule over him, he would not have spent so lavishly.
49:206
反之,我們若見有人對這一切人一無所給,卻供養窮人、賙濟貧乏的人,自己只用簡樸的飯食,就讓我們稱這人為極其寬宏大量的;
Again, if we see someone giving nothing to any of these, but feeding the poor and succouring the needy, while himself keeping a frugal table, this man let us call exceedingly magnanimous;
49:207
for it belongs truly to a great soul to despise its own ease and to take thought for the ease of others.
49:208
For tell me, if you should see someone despising all the tyrants, and counting their commands as nothing, but dragging out those who are tyrannized over by them
49:209
並把那些遭受苦害的人救拔出來;
and those who suffer ill;
49:210
would you not count this a great thing? This very thing let us reckon here also.
49:211
所以,我們若輕看那些情慾,就必成為偉大的人;
If, then, we despise them, we shall be great;
49:212
但我們若也把別人救拔出來,就必更為偉大;
but if we also draw out others, far greater;
49:213
for those who suffice not only for themselves but also for others are greater than those who do neither.
49:214
但若有人受暴君之命,毆打一個屬民,拖走另一個,凌辱第三個,我們豈能稱這為寬宏大量嗎?斷乎不能;
But if someone, commanded by a tyrant, should beat one of the subjects, drag off another, and outrage a third, shall we call this magnanimity? Certainly not;
49:215
and so much the more, the greater he is.
49:216
因為在此,靈魂原是擺在我們面前,是高貴而自由的;
For here the soul lies before us as a thing noble and free;
49:217
然而揮霍浪費的人卻吩咐這靈魂被情慾毆打;
but this soul the prodigal has commanded to be beaten by the passions;
49:218
shall we then call the man who beats himself magnanimous? By no means.
49:219
所以,讓我們認明:甚麼是寬宏大量,甚麼是揮霍浪費;甚麼是善於治家,甚麼是小氣;甚麼是溫和寬容,甚麼是怯懦;甚麼是坦然直言,甚麼是魯莽;
Let us learn, then, what magnanimity is, and what prodigality; what good management is and what pettiness; what forbearance is and what cowardice; what boldness of speech is and what rashness;
49:220
that, distinguishing these from one another, we may be able to pass the present life in a manner well-pleasing to the Lord, and to attain the good things to come, by the grace and loving-kindness of His Only-begotten, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, and honour, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
