And Paul, after remaining yet many days, took his leave of the brethren, and sailed away into Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila, having shorn his head in Cenchreae;
40:2
See how the Law has been dissolved, see how they were held fast by conscience.
40:3
This was a Jewish practice, to shear one's head in fulfilment of a vow.
40:4
However, a sacrifice too had to be offered, which did not take place after Sosthenes had been beaten.
40:5
And when he was entreated to remain with them at Ephesus, he does not consent.
40:6
For what reason, then, does he again reach Antioch? 'For having gone up,' it says, 'and greeted the Church, he went down to Antioch.'
40:7
他對這城懷有一種嚮往,因為他對它有著人之常情的感受;
He had a longing for the city, having felt something human toward it;
40:8
for here it was that the disciples were divinely appointed to be called Christians, here he was delivered to the grace of God, here he accomplished the matters concerning the doctrine.
40:9
他自己坐船往敘利亞去了;
And he indeed sailed away into Syria;
40:10
but these he left at Ephesus, and reasonably so, as those who would teach.
40:11
他們與他相處了這麼長的時間,已經學了許多;
Having been in his company so long a time, they had learned much;
40:12
and yet he had not as yet led them away from the Jewish custom.
40:13
Behold too a woman doing the same as men, and teaching.
40:14
For this reason he was hindered from coming into Asia, being driven, I suppose, toward matters that were pressing.
40:15
See at any rate here how he too was entreated to remain, and would not consent, since he was hastening to depart.
40:16
然而他並非就這樣撇下他們,乃是帶著一個應許;
Yet he did not simply leave them, but with a promise;
40:17
經上說:『他到了以弗所,就把他們留在那裏;
'And he came down,' it says, 'to Ephesus, and left them there;
40:18
but he himself, entering into the synagogue, reasoned with the Jews.'
40:19
And when they asked him to remain with them for a longer time, he did not consent, but took his leave of them, saying:
40:20
『我無論如何必須在耶路撒冷守那將到的節期;
'I must by all means keep the feast that is coming at Jerusalem;
40:21
but I will return again to you, if God will.'
40:22
And he set sail from Ephesus, and having come down to Caesarea,
40:23
上去問了教會的安,就下到安提阿;
having gone up and greeted the Church, he went down to Antioch;
40:24
and having spent some time there, he departed, going through in order the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples.
40:25
And observe, he was reaching those very places upon which he had set foot before this.
40:26
Now a certain Jew named Apollos, an Alexandrian by birth, an eloquent man, came to Ephesus, being mighty in the Scriptures.
40:27
Behold, eloquent men too were hastening to preach, and the disciples henceforth go abroad.
40:28
Do you see the progress of the preaching? This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord, and being fervent in the Spirit he spoke, and taught accurately the things concerning the Lord, knowing only the baptism of John.
40:29
And he began to speak boldly in the synagogue.
40:30
But when Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him to themselves, and expounded to him the way of God more accurately.
40:31
If this man knew only the baptism of John, how was he fervent in the Spirit? For the Spirit was not given in that manner.
40:32
But if even those who came after him needed the baptism of Christ,
40:33
much more would this man have needed it.
40:34
What then is there to say? For the writer did not set down both things merely one after another without purpose.
40:35
在我看來,這人乃是那與使徒們一同受洗的一百二十人中的一位;
It seems to me that this man was one of the hundred and twenty who were baptized together with the apostles;
40:36
or if not this, then what happened in the case of Cornelius took place also in his case.
40:37
But he is not baptized; rather, it was when they expounded to him more accurately.
40:38
在我看來,這才是真確的,就是他也是必須受洗的;
This seems to me to be true, that he too had to be baptized;
40:39
since the other twelve knew nothing accurately, nor the things concerning Jesus.
40:40
It is likely, then, that he too was baptized.
40:41
Yet even if those of John, after their baptism, were baptized again, the disciples too had to do this.
40:42
And when he wished to pass over into Achaia, the brethren, encouraging him, wrote to the disciples to receive him.
40:43
And when he had arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace.
40:44
For he vigorously refuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ.
40:45
And it came to pass, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus.
40:46
And having found certain disciples, he said to them:
40:47
'Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?' And they said to him:
40:48
'But we have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.'
40:49
'Into what, then, were you baptized?' And they said:
40:50
約翰的確施行悔改的洗,對百姓說,要信那在他以後來的那一位;
John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him;
40:51
that is to say, in Christ Jesus.
40:52
And when they heard this, they were baptized into the name of the Lord Jesus.
40:53
保羅按手在他們身上,聖靈便降在他們身上;
And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came upon them;
40:54
and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.
40:55
Now the men were in all about twelve.
40:56
These stood at a great distance from that man, who did not even know whether there be a Holy Spirit.
40:57
These, then, are the very ones who also expounded to him the way of the Lord more accurately, and who send him forward, and give him letters.
40:58
因此,他自己也有意要往亞該亞去;
He himself, therefore, was minded to depart into Achaia;
40:59
but before the brethren had urged him on and given him letters, he does not set out.
40:60
經上說,他到了那裏,多多幫助那些已經信主的人;
Who, when he had arrived, it says, helped much those who had believed;
40:61
for he powerfully confuted the Jews in public, showing by the Scriptures that Jesus was the Christ.
40:62
Hence it shows how mighty Apollos was in the Scriptures.
40:63
For the Jews he greatly silenced (for this is the meaning of 'he confuted'), while the believers he rather made bold and steadfast in the faith.
40:64
And it came to pass, it says, that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul, having passed through the upper parts, came to Ephesus.
40:65
These, then, are the matters concerning Caesarea and the rest.
40:66
And having found certain disciples, he said to them:
40:67
Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed? That these had not even believed in Christ is plain from his saying:
40:68
in Him who was coming after him, that they should believe.
40:69
And he did not say, 'The baptism of John is nothing;'
40:70
他也不僅是單單這樣說,乃是為要教導並勸服他們,奉耶穌的名受洗;
nor did he add even this bare statement, but so as to teach and persuade them to be baptized into the name of Jesus;
40:71
which also they do, and they receive the Spirit by the laying on of Paul's hands.
40:72
For when Paul, it says, had laid his hands upon them, there came the
40:73
Holy Spirit upon them.
40:74
So that they on whom he laid his hands received the Spirit.
40:75
如此看來,他們大概是已經有了聖靈,只是沒有顯出來;
It was likely, then, that they had the Spirit, but did not manifest it;
40:76
but by the working, and from the fact that they spoke with tongues, they made this evident.
40:77
But let us look at what has been read from the beginning.
40:78
Now Paul, it says, was sailing to Syria, and with him Priscilla and Aquila, whom, when he had come down to Ephesus, he left there.
40:79
或者是因為他不願意帶著他們四處奔走,因此把他們留下;
Either because he did not wish to take them about with him, and for this reason left them;
40:80
or rather that they might remain as teachers to those in Ephesus.
40:81
And they afterwards dwelt at Corinth, to whom also he bears great testimony, and greets them when writing to the Romans.
40:82
Whence it seems to me that afterwards they went to Rome, since they were fond of dwelling in those places, from which they had been expelled under Nero.
40:83
And having come down, it says, to Caesarea, and gone up and greeted the Church, he went down to Antioch; and having spent some time there, he departed, passing through the region of Galatia in order, and Phrygia.
40:84
我看那些信徒在那裏還是聚集在一起的;
It seems to me that the faithful were still gathering together there;
40:85
for he did not draw them away at once.
40:86
But observe how he hastens on toward them.
40:87
And these regions also he traverses again, so as by his presence to confirm the disciples.
40:88
Now a certain Jew, it says, named Apollos, arrived at Ephesus, being mighty in the Scriptures.
40:89
這人心裏火熱,早已被激動起來;
The man had been thoroughly aroused;
40:90
wherefore also a journey abroad is undertaken on his very account.
40:91
Who, when he had arrived, it says, in Achaia, powerfully confuted the Jews in public.
40:92
Writing concerning him, he said:
40:93
And concerning Apollos our brother.
40:94
他在眾人面前駁斥人,就顯出他的放膽;
By his confuting in public, his boldness was shown;
40:95
他有力地行這事,就彰顯出他的能力;
by his doing it powerfully, his power was made plain;
40:96
and by his demonstrating it from the divine Scriptures, his experience.
40:97
For neither does boldness avail anything by itself, if power be lacking, nor power, if boldness be lacking.
40:98
So then it was not without purpose that he left Aquila at Ephesus, but perhaps on account of Apollos the Spirit so ordered it, that he might set foot upon Corinth more mightily.
40:99
那麼,他們為甚麼對這人毫無作為,卻攻擊保羅呢?他們知道保羅乃是為首的;
And why, pray, did they do nothing to this man, but set upon Paul? They knew that he was the leader;
40:100
or also because the man's name was great.
40:101
But Aquila and Priscilla, it says, having taken him aside beforehand, expounded to him the way of God more accurately.
40:102
你要看,凡事都是憑著信心而行,處處沒有嫉妒,處處沒有惡意;
Observe how all things were done in faith, and nowhere any envy, nowhere any grudging;
40:103
Aquila teaches, or rather this man too is taught.
40:104
For indeed, having been with him for a time, they were so taught as to be themselves competent to teach others also.
40:105
And when he was minded, it says, to pass through into Achaia, they wrote to the disciples to receive him.
40:106
For what reason they send letters, he explains:
40:107
In order, it says, that they might receive him.
40:108
And whence is it plain that those in Ephesus had the baptism of John? Because when asked, 'Into what were you baptized?' they say, 'Into John's baptism.'
40:109
他們或許是那時曾寄居在耶路撒冷,後來離去,並且受了洗;
Perhaps they had sojourned at Jerusalem at that time, and had gone away, and had been baptized;
40:110
but though baptized, they did not know Jesus.
40:111
Do you believe in Jesus? Nay, but what? Did you receive the Holy Spirit? For he knew that they had it not.
40:112
And he wishes them to speak, so that, having learned of what they had been deprived, they might ask for it.
40:113
And when Paul, it says, had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues, and prophesied.
40:114
From the very moment of their baptism they prophesy.
40:115
然而約翰的洗卻沒有這個;
But this the baptism of John did not have;
40:116
but in order that they might be deemed worthy of such gifts, it rather prepared them beforehand.
40:117
So that this was what John desired in baptizing, that men should believe in Him who was coming after him.
40:118
Hence a great doctrine is shown, that those who are baptized are perfectly cleansed of their sins.
40:119
For unless they had been cleansed, these men would not have received the Spirit, nor would they at once have been deemed worthy of spiritual gifts.
40:120
And observe that the gift was twofold: both tongues and prophecies.
40:121
And he rightly called John's baptism a baptism of repentance, and not of remission, leading them on and persuading them that the former was destitute of this.
40:122
For the remission of sins came to be the work of that which was given afterward.
40:123
那麼,為何那些已領受聖靈的人不去教導,而尚未領受聖靈的亞波羅卻去教導呢?因為那些人並不那樣熱切,也未受過教訓;
And how is it that those who had received the Spirit did not teach, whereas Apollos, who had not yet received the Spirit, did? Because they were not so fervent, nor had they been instructed;
40:124
but he had been instructed, and that most thoroughly.
40:125
And it seems to me that the boldness of the man was also great.
40:126
But although he spoke accurately concerning Jesus, he nevertheless still needed yet more accurate teaching.
40:127
Thus, though he did not know all things, by his zeal he drew to himself the Holy Spirit, just as those with Cornelius did.
40:128
Perhaps many long for John's baptism, if only it still existed now.
40:129
But then many would have neglected a life of virtue; or else each would have been thought to aspire to virtue for this reason, and not for the sake of the kingdom of heaven.
40:130
Moreover, many would have become false prophets, and thereafter the approved would not have been shown to be so exceedingly conspicuous, nor would those who received the faith in simplicity have been counted blessed.
40:131
As therefore they who have not seen and yet have believed are blessed, so also are they who believe without signs.
40:132
Tell me now, was it not in reproach to the Jews that Christ said:
40:133
'Unless you see signs, you will by no means believe'? Therefore we were in no way harmed, if we should be willing to take heed to ourselves.
40:134
We have the sum of all good things through baptism:
40:135
we have received remission of sins, sanctification, participation in the Spirit, adoption as sons, life eternal.
40:136
What more do you want? Signs? But they are done away.
40:137
你有信、有望、有愛,這都是常存的;
You have faith, hope, love — the things that abide;
40:138
seek these, these which are greater than signs.
40:139
'The greatest of all is love,' he says.
40:140
然而如今愛卻岌岌可危;
But now love is in peril;
40:141
for only its name is left, but the deed is nowhere to be found; rather, we are divided from one another.
40:142
What then might one do so as to knit us together? For to bring an accusation is easy, but this is only the half of the matter.
40:143
所以,我們必須指明友愛如何才能成就;
Therefore we must show how friendship might be brought about;
40:144
for this is what is to be studied — how we may gather together the members that have been torn asunder.
40:145
因為所尋求的並不僅僅是我們是否同屬一個教會,或持守同一教義;
For this is not simply what is sought, whether we have one Church, or one doctrine;
40:146
but this is the dreadful thing, that while we hold communion with one another in other matters, in the necessary things we do not hold communion; and while we are at peace with all, we are at strife among ourselves.
40:147
For do not look to whether we make quarrels every day, but to the fact that we do not have a genuine and unswerving love.
40:148
There is need of bandages and of oil.
40:149
讓我們思想:愛乃是基督門徒的記號,離了它,其餘一切都毫無用處;
Let us consider that love is the mark of the disciples of Christ, that without it all the other things avail nothing;
40:150
and that it is a thing without toil, if only we are willing.
40:151
'Yes,' one says, 'we know these things, but how may it be accomplished? What is to be done that it may come to pass? How may we love one another?' First let us remove the things that destroy love, and then we shall establish it.
40:152
不要有人懷恨記仇,不要有人嫉妒,不要有人幸災樂禍;
Let no one be resentful, let no one be envious, let no one be malicious;
40:153
it is not enough to remove the things that hinder, but one must also point out the things that build up.
40:154
Now Sirach names the things that destroy, but not further the things that unite, speaking of reviling, and the disclosure of a secret, and a treacherous blow.
40:155
然而,對那些人而言,這些話原是合宜的,因為他們是屬肉體的;
But in the case of those men these things were fitting, seeing that they were carnal;
40:156
it is not from these that we lead you, but from the other things.
40:157
Nothing is of any good to us apart from friendship.
40:158
Let there be ten thousand good things, but what is the profit? Let there be wealth, let there be luxury without friends, but what is the gain? No possession is fairer than this, even in the affairs of this life; just as, on the other hand, nothing is more grievous than those who are at enmity.
40:159
「愛能遮掩許多的罪」;
'Love covers a multitude of sins';
40:160
but enmity suspects even the things that are not.
40:161
It is not enough not to be an enemy, but one must also love.
40:162
Consider that Christ commanded it, and this is enough.
40:163
Affliction too makes friendships, and gathers people together.
40:164
有人說:「那麼如今又怎樣呢,既然沒有患難?你且告訴我,我們怎樣才能成為朋友呢?」你且告訴我,難道你沒有別的朋友嗎?你是怎樣作他們朋友的呢?你又是怎樣一直保持下去的呢?眼下,就先不要有人以任何人為仇敵;
'What then,' one says, 'now, when there is no affliction? Tell me, how may we become friends?' Have you no other friends, tell me? How are you their friends? How do you continue so? For the present, let no one hold anyone as an enemy;
40:165
it is not possible for one who does not envy to bring accusation.
40:166
We all dwell in one inhabited world; we are nourished by the same fruits.
40:167
We enjoy the same mysteries, the same spiritual food.
40:168
These surely are grounds for loving.
40:169
'How then,' one says, 'shall we be warmly disposed?' What is it that produces love of bodies? Beauty of body.
40:170
那麼,讓我們也把靈魂修飾得美麗,我們就必彼此相親相愛了;
Let us then make our souls fair as well, and we shall be lovely to one another;
40:171
for we must not only love, but also be loved.
40:172
Let us first accomplish this, so as to be loved, and that other thing will be easy.
40:173
How are we to be loved? Let us become good, and let us work at this, so as always to have those who love us.
40:174
Let no one be eager to acquire money, nor slaves, nor houses, as to be loved, and to have a good name.
40:175
'A good name is better than much wealth.'
40:176
因為美名長存,財富卻要毀壞;
For the one abides, but the other perishes;
40:177
and the one it is possible to acquire, but the other is impossible.
40:178
因為那得了惡名的人,要脫去它是極其艱難的;
For he who has gotten a bad reputation will with difficulty put it off;
40:179
but the poor man will quickly become rich by reason of his good name.
40:180
假設有一人擁有一萬他連得(銀子),另有一人卻擁有一百個朋友;
Let there be one who has ten thousand talents, and another who has a hundred friends;
40:181
this latter is wealthier than the former.
40:182
Let us not then do this in a mere careless way, but let us labor at it as at some form of wealth.
40:183
'And how are we able?' one says. 'A sweet throat multiplies its friends, and a gracious tongue.'
40:184
Let us acquire a mouth of good repute, and pure manners.
40:185
It is not possible for one so disposed to remain hidden.
40:186
See how many bonds of friendship those outside have devised — the sharing of children in baptism, neighborhood, kinships.
40:187
但我們中間所有的,比這一切都更大;
But greater than all these are the things among us;
40:188
this table is more venerable.
40:189
Yet many of those who approach it do not even know one another.
40:190
It is this multitude that does it, one says.
40:191
By no means; rather it is our own sluggishness.
40:192
They were three thousand, and five thousand, and all had but one soul;
40:193
but now each man does not so much as know his brother, and is not ashamed to lay the blame upon the multitude.
40:194
He, however, who possesses many friends is invulnerable to all men, and stronger than any tyrant.
40:195
那些持矛的衛士守護暴君,遠不及朋友守護這人來得周全;
The spear-bearers do not guard the tyrant so well as friends guard this man;
40:196
and this man is more illustrious than that one.
40:197
因為那一位是被自己的奴僕所守護,這一位卻是被與他同等尊榮的人所守護;
For the one is guarded by his own slaves, but the other by his equals in honor;
40:198
and the one by unwilling men who fear him, but this man by willing men who have no fear.
40:199
And here one may behold a marvelous thing: one man in many, and in one man many.
40:200
正如在琴上音調各不相同,和聲卻是一致,而彈奏這琴的樂師只有一位;
And just as upon a lyre the notes are diverse, yet the harmony is one, and one is the musician who handles the lyre;
40:201
在此也是如此:那琴就是愛本身,而發響的音調乃是藉著愛所發出的友愛話語,眾人都發出一個同樣的和諧與交響;
so it is here too: the lyre is love itself, and the notes that sound are the friendly words uttered through love, all of them giving forth one and the same harmony and concord;
40:202
那樂師便是愛的能力;
and the musician is the power of love;
40:203
it is this that strikes the sweet melody.
40:204
I could wish to lead you, were it possible, into such a city as this, where there was but one soul; and you would see how the concord there is more fitly attuned than any lyre or any flute, sounding no discordant strain.
40:205
這樂曲使眾天使、並眾天使的主宰神都歡喜;
This melody gladdens both the angels and the Lord of angels, God;
40:206
這使天上整個觀眾席都振奮起來;
this rouses up the whole theater that is in heaven;
40:207
this too charms the fury of demons, and soothes the impulses of the passions.
40:208
This melody not only charms the passions, but does not even suffer them to rise up, and it produces a deep silence.
40:209
因為正如在戲院裡,當一隊樂師合唱時,眾人都靜默聆聽,那裡沒有喧嚷;
For just as in a theater, when a chorus of musicians sings, all listen in silence, and there is no uproar there;
40:210
so also among friends, when love strikes the note, all the passions are stilled and lulled to sleep, like wild beasts charmed and soothed; whereas, on the contrary, where there is enmity, all is the reverse.
40:211
然而我們暫且不談仇恨;
But let us for now say nothing about enmity;
40:212
let us speak only about friendship.
40:213
你若說了甚麼冒失的話,沒有人抓住你不放,眾人反倒都體諒你;
If you say something rash, no one takes you to task, but all make allowance for you;
40:214
你若做了甚麼事,沒有人猜疑你,反倒滿有寬恕;
if you do something, no one is suspicious, but there is much forgiveness;
40:215
眾人都樂意向跌倒的人伸出援手;
all are ready to stretch out a hand to one who falls;
40:216
all are eager for those who wish to stand.
40:217
Friendship is truly an unbreakable wall, not even to be taken by the devil, much less by men.
40:218
凡得著許多朋友的人,斷不至陷入危險;
It is not possible for one who has gained many friends to fall into danger;
40:219
他斷不會有動怒的因由,反倒只有喜樂;
it is not possible for him to have any occasion for anger, but rather for good cheer;
40:220
他常在歡笑與享樂之中;
he is ever in laughter and in delight;
40:221
他斷不會有嫉妒的因由;
it is not possible for him to have any occasion for envy;
40:222
it is not possible for him to have any pretext for remembering wrongs.
40:223
Behold how such a man succeeds in things both spiritual and carnal with all ease.
40:224
What then could ever be equal to this? Such a man is like a city walled about on every side, but the other is like a city without walls.
40:225
It belongs to great wisdom to be able to be a maker of friendships.
40:226
Take away friendship, and you have taken away everything, you have thrown all into confusion.
40:227
But if an image of friendship has so great a power, how great must the truth itself be? Let us then, I beseech you, procure friends for you, and let each one possess this art.
40:228
But behold, one says, I am zealous, yet the other is not zealous.
40:229
Thus your reward will be the greater.
40:230
Yes, one says, but the matter is more difficult.
40:231
How so, tell me? Behold, I solemnly testify and declare, that if only ten of you band yourselves together,
40:232
and make this your work—just as the apostles made preaching their work, and the prophets teaching—so too we make the making of friends our work, the reward will be great.
40:233
讓我們為自己塑造君王的像;
Let us fashion for ourselves royal images;
40:234
And how is it that we are not doing something greater than if we had implanted in them the power of raising the dead? The diadem and the purple robe reveal the king, and if these are absent, even though he have garments of gold, the king is not yet manifest.
40:235
So indeed also now, do you produce the token, and you will make friends both for yourself and for others.
40:236
There is no one who, being loved, will be willing to hate.
40:237
讓我們認識那些顏色,就是這像藉以調和、藉以構成的顏色;
Let us learn the colors, whereby they are blended, whereby this image is composed;
40:238
let us not wait for our neighbors.
40:239
我若看見有人在等候,我就變得比他更壞;
If I see anyone waiting, I become worse than he;
40:240
but rather, whenever you see it, anticipate him and quench his passion.
40:241
你看見一個患病的人,難道還要加重他的病麼?我們在萬事之上,尤要成就這一件事,就是恭敬人,彼此推讓為先;
Do you see one who is sick, and do you aggravate the disease? Above all things let us succeed in this: in going before one another in honor;
40:242
in esteeming one another as surpassing ourselves—do not think that you are diminished thereby.
40:243
If indeed you go first in honor, you have honored yourself the more, drawing to yourself the being honored the more.
40:244
Everywhere let us yield the first places to others.
40:245
Let us remember none of the injuries done to us, but if there be any good.
40:246
Nothing so makes a friend as a grateful tongue, a mouth that speaks well, a soul without conceit, a contempt for vainglory, a scorn of honor.
40:247
If we accomplish these things, we shall be able to become unconquerable by the snares of the devil, and, having carried through virtue with all exactness, to attain unto the good things promised to those who love Him, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom, to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
