Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was the synagogue of the Jews.
37:2
And according to Paul's custom, he went in unto them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures, opening and setting forth that the Christ must suffer and rise again from the dead, and that 'This is the Christ, Jesus, whom I proclaim to you.'
37:3
Again they pass by the small cities, but press on to the greater ones, since from there, as from a kind of fountain, the word was to flow out into the neighboring places.
37:4
And according to Paul's custom, he entered into the synagogue of the Jews.
37:5
And yet, though he had said, 'We turn to the Gentiles,' he did not abandon these.
37:6
For he had a great longing toward them.
37:7
For hear him speaking:
37:8
'Brethren, the good pleasure of my heart, and my supplication to God, is for Israel, unto salvation.'
37:9
And, 'I could wish that I myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren.'
37:10
He did this on account of the promise of God and His glory, and so that this might not be a stumbling-block to the Greeks.
37:11
'And for three Sabbaths he reasoned with them from the Scriptures, opening and setting forth that the Christ must suffer and rise again from the dead, and that This is Jesus the Christ, whom I proclaim to you.'
37:12
You see that above all he proclaims the Passion.
37:13
Thus they were not ashamed, but knew this to be salvific.
37:14
And some of them were persuaded, and were added to Paul and Silas; and of the devout Greeks a great multitude, and of the chief women not a few.
37:15
He stated the main substance of the discourse.
37:16
So free is he from superfluity, not everywhere recounting his public addresses.
37:17
但那不信的猶太人心裡嫉妒,招聚了些市井匪類,搭夥成群,聳動合城的人;
But the Jews who did not believe, being moved with jealousy and taking to themselves certain wicked men of the marketplace and gathering a crowd, set the city in an uproar;
37:18
又闖進耶孫的家,要把他們帶到百姓那裡;
and assailing the house of Jason, they sought to bring them out to the populace;
37:19
找不著他們,就把耶孫和幾個弟兄拉到地方官那裡,喊叫說:「那攪亂天下的人,也到這裡來了,耶孫竟收留他們;
but not finding them, they dragged Jason and certain brethren before the city rulers, crying out that 'These men who have turned the world upside down have come here also, whom Jason has received;
37:20
and all these act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, Jesus.'
37:21
Again they slandered them with a charge of treason, saying, he means, that there is another king, Jesus.
37:22
他們既聽見這些話,就使眾人和地方官都驚慌了;
And they stirred up the crowd, and the city rulers, who heard these things;
37:23
and having taken security from Jason and the rest, they let them go.
37:24
Admirable was the man, who gave himself over to danger and sent them away.
37:25
弟兄們立即趁著夜間,打發保羅和西拉往庇哩亞去;
And the brethren immediately, by night, sent away both Paul and Silas to Berea;
37:26
who, on arriving, went into the synagogue of the Jews.
37:27
Now these were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily to see whether these things were so.
37:28
And observe: not carelessly, but with exactness they searched the Scriptures (for this is the meaning of 'they examined'), wishing rather to gain from them full assurance concerning the Passion.
37:29
Many of them therefore believed, and of the Greek women of honorable estate and of men not a few.
37:30
But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God had been proclaimed by Paul in Berea also, they came there too, agitating the crowds.
37:31
弟兄們便立即打發保羅走,彷彿是往海邊去;
And immediately then the brethren sent Paul away to go as it were toward the sea;
37:32
but Silas and Timothy remained there.
37:33
Observe him both withdrawing and standing firm, and doing many things in a human manner.
37:34
And those who conducted Paul brought him as far as Athens; and having received a command for Silas and Timothy, that they should come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.
37:35
But let us look at what has been said from the beginning.
37:36
'For three Sabbaths,' it says, 'he reasoned with them, opening from the Scriptures.'
37:37
For this too Christ did, reasoning up and down from the Scriptures, and not everywhere from the signs.
37:38
For since they were hostilely disposed toward Him, and slandered Him as a deceiver and a sorcerer, therefore He too reasoned from the Scriptures.
37:39
因為那單憑神蹟去說服人的,理當受人猜疑;
For he who undertakes to persuade from signs alone is reasonably held in suspicion;
37:40
but he who persuades from the Scriptures does not incur this suspicion.
37:41
我們也多處看見祂藉著教訓來說服人;
And in many places we find Him persuading by teaching;
37:42
在安提阿,當祂施教時,合城的人幾乎都聚集了;
and in Antioch too, as He taught, the whole city was gathered together;
37:43
so great a thing is this too, and no small sign, but this indeed is exceedingly great.
37:44
And so that they might not think that they themselves had prevailed in everything, God permits them to be driven out.
37:45
For two things resulted from this:
37:46
他們既不至自高自大,以為是自己成就的,也不至懼怕,以為要擔負罪責;
they neither thought highly of themselves as if they had accomplished it, nor again were afraid as if they were liable to blame;
37:47
thus their very being summoned was part of the divine dispensation.
37:48
'And of the devout Greeks,' it says, 'a great multitude, and of the Greek women of honorable estate believed, and of men not a few.'
37:49
But how, though he said, 'That we should go to the Gentiles, but they to the circumcision,' did he reason with the Jews? He did this out of abundance.
37:50
For if it were needful to reason with the Jews, how did he say again:
37:51
「因為那感動彼得、叫他為受割禮之人作使徒的,也感動我,叫我為外邦人作使徒」?正如那些人雖被分別出來歸於受割禮的人,卻也與外邦人往來;
'For He who worked in that one for the circumcision worked also in me for the Gentiles'? Just as those others also associated with the Gentiles, although they had been set apart for the circumcision;
37:52
Their greater portion, then, was among these.
37:53
Yet neither did he neglect those others, lest they should seem to be torn apart.
37:54
And how is it, one asks, that he went first of all into the synagogues? Because it was through the Jews that he won over the Greeks; from those with whom he reasoned as Jews.
37:55
And he knew that this above all was what drew the Gentiles to the faith.
37:56
For this reason he said, 'Inasmuch as I am the apostle of the Gentiles.'
37:57
And indeed all his epistles are directed in contention against the Jews.
37:58
For it was necessary, he says, that the Christ should suffer.
37:59
他既必須受苦,也就必定要復活;
If He had to suffer, then assuredly He also had to rise again;
37:60
for this is far more marvelous than that.
37:61
For if He delivered to death Him who had done no wrong, much more did He raise Him up.
37:62
But the unbelieving Jews, having taken to themselves certain worthless fellows of the marketplace, set the city in an uproar, he says.
37:63
So that the Greeks were the more numerous.
37:64
And they take certain men to themselves, since the Jews did not think themselves sufficient for the sedition, and since they had no reasonable pretext.
37:65
By tumult they always accomplish such things, and by the enlisting of wicked men.
37:66
But not finding them, he says, they dragged Jason.
37:67
From the houses they simply hauled them out.
37:68
'These all,' they say, 'act contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying that there is another king, one Jesus.'
37:69
Since they said nothing contrary to the established laws, nor stirred up the city, they bring them under another charge and slander them with the accusation of high treason.
37:70
And why are you afraid, if indeed He is dead? See how the persecutions everywhere extend the preaching.
37:71
'Now these,' he says, 'were more noble than those in Thessalonica;'
37:72
就是說,他們沒有作甚麼惡事;
that is, doing nothing wicked;
37:73
but while the former were persuaded, these on the contrary even do the opposite, throwing them into confusion.
37:74
'Many of them therefore believed, and of the Greek women also,' he says.
37:75
Again here the Greeks believe.
37:76
但請你留意,他們逃走乃是出於審慎的安排,並非因膽怯;
But observe, I pray you, that they fled by way of prudent management, not out of cowardice;
37:77
for otherwise they would have ceased preaching, and not rather have provoked their adversaries the more.
37:78
然而由此便生出兩樣結果;
But out of this two things came to pass;
37:79
both the wrath of those men was quenched, and the preaching went forward.
37:80
that they came there too, stirring up the crowds—hinting at their ungovernable madness.
37:81
'And immediately the brethren sent Paul away,' he says, 'to go as it were unto the sea.'
37:82
在這裡他們終於單單打發保羅一人;
Here at length they send Paul alone;
37:83
因為他們為他擔憂,惟恐他遭遇甚麼危害,因他正是他們的首領;
for they were afraid concerning him, lest he should suffer some harm, seeing that he was their very head;
37:84
thus grace did not work everywhere, but suffered them also to do things after the manner of men, rousing them and awakening them, and casting them into anxious care.
37:85
See at all events, that only as far as Philippi did grace preserve him, but from that point no longer.
37:86
'And having received a charge,' he says, 'unto Silas and Timothy, that they should come to him as quickly as possible, they departed.'
37:87
For even though he was Paul, yet he had need of those men.
37:88
由此可見,他們在神的引導之下急速前往馬其頓,乃是美事;
So then, it was well that they were hastening into Macedonia under God's direction;
37:89
因為此時希臘也已成為顯赫之地;
for Greece too was now illustrious;
37:90
since indeed he also did other things beyond what was required.
37:91
基督定規傳福音的人靠著福音養生,但這人卻不如此行;
Christ ordained that men should live by the gospel, but this man did not do so;
37:92
Christ did not send him to baptize, yet this man baptized.
37:93
See how Peter was a counterpoise to all for the circumcision, this man for the Gentiles, for the greater part.
37:94
'And having taken security,' he says, 'from Jason, they let them go.'
37:95
See how Jason, having given security, sent Paul away, so that he gave his own life for him.
37:96
'These,' he says, 'were more noble than those in Thessalonica;'
37:97
that is, being such in respect of virtue and of faith toward God.
37:98
'Who received the word with all readiness of mind,' he says, 'daily examining the Scriptures, whether these things were so.'
37:99
那城原是較大,其中也有市井之人;
And yet the city was greater, and there were men of the marketplace in it;
37:100
but it is no marvel even if in a greater city they are worse.
37:101
Indeed it is likely that in the greater city they are worse, where there are many occasions of tumults.
37:102
正如在身體裡,疾病越是沉重,就有越多的病質與滋養;
For just as in the body, when the disease is more grievous, it has more matter and nourishment;
37:103
so indeed here too, what happened in Iconium now happens also here.
37:104
And Paul goes forth, that they too may pay the penalty for the destruction of others.
37:105
For this reason also Paul said:
37:106
'Forbidding us to speak to the Gentiles.'
37:107
And why did they not remain here, one asks? Why did they not work signs? For if there, where he was being stoned, he remained a considerable time, much more here.
37:108
為何呢?神並非常常願意這些人行神蹟;
Why? God did not always will that these men should work signs;
37:109
for it was no less a sign to prevail while being persecuted, without signs, than to work signs.
37:110
So that, just as now He prevails without signs, so also then in many places He willed to prevail.
37:111
The apostles therefore did not rely on signs, as indeed he himself says:
37:112
'But we preach Christ crucified.'
37:113
To those who seek signs, to those who seek wisdom, we give these things which cannot persuade even with signs, and yet we persuade.
37:114
So that this was a great sign.
37:115
See at all events, when the preaching was intensified, how quickly they have recourse to signs.
37:116
因為此後為著那些已經信主的人的緣故,神蹟必須比其餘的更大;
For it was needful henceforth, for the sake of those who had believed, that the signs should be greater than the rest;
37:117
but by withdrawing and advancing they wrought these things.
37:118
'They sent him away,' he says, 'as it were unto the sea.'
37:119
Why so? That it might not be easy for them to be seized.
37:120
For thus by themselves they would have done some great thing, and with him they accomplished and set right many things.
37:121
For the time being they wished to snatch him away.
37:122
你看其餘的門徒對那些為首的是何等殷勤盡心;
See with how great zeal the rest of the disciples also treated the chief ones;
37:123
然而事情並非如今這樣,我們彼此隔絕,被劃分為尊為大的與微不足道的;
But it is not as now, when we are severed and divided into great and small;
37:124
some of us are puffed up, while others are consumed with envy.
37:125
For this reason those men too are envious, because we are inflated with conceit and cannot endure to be on an equal footing with them.
37:126
身體之所以有和諧,正是因為其中沒有自高自大;
This is why in the body there is harmony, because there is no self-conceit;
37:127
而所以沒有自高自大,是因為肢體被安排在彼此需要的必然關係之中;
and there is no self-conceit, because the members are set in a necessity of having need of one another;
37:128
and the head has need of the feet, and the feet of the head.
37:129
神也為我們作了同樣的安排,然而我們連這樣也不肯甘心接受;
And God has done this same thing for us as well, and yet not even so do we endure it;
37:130
for even apart from this there ought to have been love.
37:131
Or do you not hear even those outside slandering us, when they say:
37:132
'Their friendships are matters of self-interest'? The laity have need of us,
37:133
and we in turn exist for their sake.
37:134
照樣,若沒有受教者與受治者,教師與治理者也就無從存在,他也無法施展自己的才能;
So too a teacher and a ruler could not exist, were there none to be taught and none to be ruled, nor could he display his own gifts;
37:135
and the farmer has need of the land.
37:136
教師若無所教之人可指陳,有何賞賜可言?學生若未得著最上乘的教導,又有何益?如此,我們彼此同樣需要對方:治理者需要受治者,領袖需要順從的人;
For what reward has a teacher, if he has no learners to point to? And what have the learners, if they have not enjoyed the best instruction? So that once again we alike have need of one another, both rulers of the ruled, and the leader of those who obey;
37:137
for rulers exist for the sake of the many.
37:138
For no one is by himself sufficient to accomplish anything, whether he needs to ordain by vote, or to deliberate on counsels and opinions; but men become more honoured by reason of the assembly and the multitude.
37:139
For instance, the poor have need of those who give, and the givers in turn of those who receive.
37:140
'Considering one another,' he says, 'to provoke unto love and to good works.'
37:141
For this reason the common life of the Church has greater power, and the things which one cannot do by himself, he prevails to do when acting together with the others.
37:142
For this reason especially are the prayers made here on behalf of the whole world, on behalf of the Church that is spread to the ends of the earth, on behalf of peace, on behalf of those in calamities.
37:143
And this too Paul makes plain when he says:
37:144
'That for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.'
37:145
that is, that He may bestow grace upon many.
37:146
And often he seeks after their prayers.
37:147
See too what God says concerning the Ninevites:
37:148
'And shall I not spare the city, in which dwell more than a hundred and twenty thousand?' 'Where two or three are gathered together in My name,' He says, 'there am I in the midst of them.'
37:149
But if two have great power, how much more the many? And even if, being one, you will have some power, yet it is not the same.
37:150
But why are you also alone? Why do you not win over many? Why do you not become a craftsman of love? Why do you not build up friendship? You lack the greatest praise of virtue.
37:151
For just as being wicked by agreement more greatly provokes God,
37:152
so also being good in concord more greatly gladdens Him.
37:153
'You shall not,' He says, 'be with the many for evil.'
37:154
'They are all gone aside, they are together become unprofitable, and they became as those who sing in their wickednesses.'
37:155
Make friends for yourself before your kinsfolk, before all others.
37:156
If the peacemaker is a son of God,
37:157
how much more is he who also makes friends? If he who merely reconciles is called a son of God,
37:158
of what will not he be worthy who makes the reconciled into friends? Let us engage in this traffic; let us make friends of one another out of enemies, and those who are not enemies indeed, yet not friends—let us gather these also together, and above all, let us gather our own selves.
37:159
For just as one who has enmity in his own house, and is at variance with his own wife, is not worthy of credit in reconciling others, but will hear:
37:160
「醫生,你醫治自己吧」;
'Physician, heal yourself';
37:161
so also here he will hear the same.
37:162
What then is the enmity within us? It is that of the soul against the body, that of vice against virtue.
37:163
Let us do away with this, let us make an end of this war, and then in peace we shall also converse with others with much boldness, our conscience not accusing us.
37:164
Wrath wars against gentleness; the love of money wars against contempt for riches; envy wars against kindness.
37:165
Let us break up this war, let us bring down these enemies, let us set up these trophies, let us establish peace in our own city.
37:166
因為我們有一座城,有一個國度,有公民,也有許多寄居的外人;
For we have a city and a commonwealth, and citizens, and many strangers;
37:167
but let us make an expulsion of strangers, that the members of the household be not corrupted.
37:168
Let no alien nor spurious doctrine come in, no carnal mindset.
37:169
我們豈不看見,仇敵中若有人在城中被拿住,就被當作奸細審判嗎?所以讓我們把外人驅逐出去;
Do we not see that if one of the enemy be caught in the cities, he is judged as a spy? Let us therefore make an expulsion of strangers;
37:170
or rather, not only an expulsion of strangers, but let us also drive out the enemies.
37:171
If we see any one, let us hand over to the ruler, that is, to the mind, that reasoning which is indeed barbarian, yet decked out in civic attire.
37:172
Many such reasonings there are among us, by nature enemies, yet clothed in a sheep's skin.
37:173
正如波斯人脫下頭冠、褲子與蠻夷的鞋履,換上我們本地的其餘服飾,把頭髮剪得貼近頭皮,用通用的語言交談,就藉著外表掩藏了敵意;
Just as the Persians, having taken off the tiara and the trousers and the barbarian footwear, and having put on the rest of the garb native to us, and having cropped their hair close, and conversing in the customary tongue, hide their hostility by their appearance;
37:174
然而你若立刻施以拷問,就把那隱藏的顯露出來了;
but if you straightway apply the tortures, you have exposed what was concealed;
37:175
so also here: put such a reasoning to the test a thousand times, and quickly you will see the barbarian in it.
37:176
但為要藉一個例子,向你們指出這樣的奸細——就是魔鬼差遣前來窺探我們裡面情形的——來吧,讓我們剝去其中一個的偽裝,在審判台前仔細查驗;
But that I may show you such spies by an example—those whom the devil sends forward to see what is within us—come, let us strip one of them, and examine him at the tribunal with exactness;
37:177
and if you please, let us bring forward some of those detected by Paul.
37:178
'Which things,' he says, 'have indeed a show of wisdom in will-worship and humility and neglecting of the body, not in any honour to the satisfying of the flesh.'
37:179
譬如,魔鬼想要引進猶太教的規條;
For instance, the devil wished to bring in Judaism;
37:180
if then he had brought it in openly of itself, he would not have persuaded any one.
37:181
See then how he decked it out.
37:182
'One must be sparing of the body,' he says.
37:183
「這才是敬虔的操練:不隨意進食,反倒謹守自制;
'This is philosophy: not to admit food, but to keep watch over oneself;
37:184
this is humility.'
37:185
And now again, in the case of the heretics, he wished to bring us down to the level of the creation.
37:186
你要看他如何設下這詭計;
See then how he contrived the deceit;
37:187
他若說「當敬拜受造之物」,就被拿住了;
if he had said, 'Worship the creation,' he would have been caught;
37:188
but what does he say? 'God,' he says, 'is created.'
37:189
但讓我們在審判者的判決之前,把使徒諸經的本意徹底揭示出來;
But let us strip bare, before the vote of the judges, the mind of the apostolic Scriptures;
37:190
they themselves will recognize both the proclamation and the speech.
37:191
許多人謀取利益,為要有東西可以施捨窮人——卻是不義之財;
Many gain gains, that they may have wherewith to give to the poor—unjust gains;
37:192
and this too is a grievous reasoning.
37:193
But let us rid ourselves of him and refute him, that we be not taken captive, but rather, having escaped all the devices of the devil, may be able—holding fast the sound doctrines with exactness—to pass through the present life in safety, and to attain the good things that have been promised, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
