'And as they spoke to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple came upon them.'
10:2
Not yet had they taken breath from the former trials when they straightway entered into others.
10:3
And observe how matters are ordered.
10:4
起先他們眾人一同被人譏誚;
First they were all mocked together;
10:5
這試煉並不算小;
no small trial was this;
10:6
secondly, the leaders themselves fall into dangers.
10:7
但這兩件事並非接連而至,也不是無故發生;
But the two did not happen in immediate succession, nor at random;
10:8
乃是他們先在公開的講論中得了美名,後來又行了一件大神蹟;
rather, having first won esteem in their public discourses, and having afterward wrought a great wonder,
10:9
so then at last, after they had grown bold, and God permitting it, they lay hold of the contests.
10:10
But do you consider for me how, whereas in the case of Christ they sought one to betray Him, here at last they themselves lay their hands on the apostles, having become bolder and more shameless after the cross.
10:11
因為罪在陣痛醞釀之時,還存著幾分羞恥;
For sin, as long as it is in travail, has some shame;
10:12
but when it is brought to completion, then it makes those who work it more shameless.
10:13
And why does the captain also come upon them? 'For the priests and the captain of the temple came upon them,' it says.
10:14
這是要叫他們再一次把公眾的罪名加在所行的事上,不作私事來處置;
It was that they might again fasten a public charge upon what was being done, and not prosecute it as a private matter;
10:15
which is what they everywhere are eager to do.
10:16
'Being sorely grieved because they taught the people.'
10:17
They were sorely grieved, not only because they taught, but because they said not merely that He alone had been raised, but that we too are raised through Him.
10:18
It was, he says, because they were teaching the people, and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection of the dead.
10:19
So mighty had the Resurrection become, that He was made the cause of resurrection for others as well.
10:20
And they laid hands on them, and put them in ward until the morrow.
10:21
Their hands, still full of the former bloodshed, they had; and they did not shrink back, but laid them again upon fresh blood, that they might fill up the measure.
10:22
Or perhaps they were also afraid, since the disciples had now become a multitude; and for this reason the captain of the temple set upon them together with the others.
10:23
For it was already evening, he says.
10:24
They then, wishing to soften the apostles, did this and kept watch over them.
10:25
But rather the delay of time wrought the opposite effect.
10:26
And observe who they are that are taken.
10:27
The chief of the apostles, who thereby became an example to the rest, that they should no longer seek one another, nor look to being together in a body.
10:28
But many of those who heard the word believed; and the number of the men came to be about five thousand.
10:29
What is this? Was it that they saw them held in honour? Did they not behold them bound? How then did they believe? Do you see the plain working of power? And indeed even those who had already believed might well have become weaker.
10:30
For Peter's public discourse had cast the seeds down into the depths, and had touched their understanding.
10:31
But they, on this account, were enraged: because the apostles feared them not at all, because they counted the present terrors as nothing.
10:32
For if He who was crucified, they reasoned, works such things and has raised up the lame man, we fear not even these men.
10:33
So this too came to pass by the dispensation of God.
10:34
From this point those who now believed became more in number than the first.
10:35
Being afraid at this, for this reason they bound the apostles in the sight of the people, that they might make them also the more timid.
10:36
But the very opposite of what they intended came to pass.
10:37
For this reason too they examine them not before the people, but privately, that the hearers might not gain courage from their boldness of speech.
10:38
And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers and elders and scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem, and Annas the high priest, and Caiaphas, and John, and Alexander, and as many as were of the high-priestly race.
10:39
Again they come together to the same place.
10:40
For no longer, amid their other evils, were even the ordinances of the Law being kept.
10:41
And once more they invest the matter with the form of a tribunal, that the apostles might become liable to their unjust judgement.
10:42
And having set them in the midst, they inquired: By what power, or in what name, have ye done this? And yet they knew.
10:43
For being sore troubled, he says, because they proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection.
10:44
For this very reason also they seized them.
10:45
For what reason then do they ask? Expecting that, because of the multitude, they would deny; and thinking that by this means they would have accomplished everything.
10:46
In what name have ye done this? Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said unto them.
10:47
Call to mind for me now the words of Christ, and how that came to pass which He foretold.
10:48
When they deliver you up to the synagogues, be not anxious how or what ye shall speak.
10:49
For it is the Spirit of your Father that speaketh in you.
10:50
So then they received much power.
10:51
But hear also what he says.
10:52
Rulers of the people, and elders of Israel.
10:53
Behold the wisdom of the man, and how, though full of boldness, he utters nothing insolent, but speaks with honour.
10:54
Rulers of the people, he says, and elders of Israel, if we this day are examined concerning a good deed done to an impotent man, by what means he has been made whole, be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel.
10:55
Very nobly did he lay hold on them from the very outset, and put them thoroughly to the test.
10:56
Rather, he even reminded them of former things, that they are judging them for a good deed, as if he said.
10:57
Most of all we ought to be crowned for these things, and to be publicly proclaimed as benefactors.
10:58
But now we are even brought to judgement for a good deed done to an impotent man, not to a rich man, not to a ruler, not to one of renown.
10:59
And yet in this, who could have grudged? (2)
10:60
The declaration is fraught with great weight.
10:61
And it is shown hence, that they themselves impale themselves upon their own evils.
10:62
That in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.
10:63
That which grieved them most of all, he adds.
10:64
This then was that which Christ had said unto them.
10:65
What ye have heard in the ear, proclaim upon the housetops.
10:66
That in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even in Him doth this man stand here before you whole.
10:67
Think not, he says, that we conceal His native place or His passion.
10:68
Whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even in Him doth this man himself stand here before you whole.
10:69
Again the passion, again the resurrection.
10:70
This is the stone which was set at nought of you the builders, which is become the head of the corner.
10:71
He reminded them also of a saying sufficient to strike fear.
10:72
For whosoever shall fall on this stone, he says, shall be broken to pieces.
10:73
And there is salvation in none other.
10:74
What sort of blows do you suppose they received from these words? For neither is there any other name under heaven that is given among men, in which we must be saved.
10:75
Here too he utters lofty words.
10:76
For whenever there is nothing to be set right, but only boldness to be displayed, he spares not.
10:77
For he feared not lest he should give offence.
10:78
And he said not merely, By another.
10:79
But, There is salvation in none other.
10:80
Showing that He is able to save us; and at the same time wishing to strike fear into them.
10:81
Now when they beheld the boldness of Peter and John, and had perceived that they were unlearned and common men, they marvelled; and they recognized them, that they had been with Jesus.
10:82
And how, one asks, did unlearned men out-argue both these and the high priests? Because it was not they themselves that spoke, but through them the grace of the Spirit.
10:83
And seeing the man that was healed standing with them, they had nothing to say against it.
10:84
Great was the boldness of the man.
10:85
And this is plain from his not forsaking them in the very court of judgement.
10:86
So that if they had said, It is not so, that man would have accused them.
10:87
But when they had commanded them to go aside out of the council, they conferred among themselves, saying.
10:88
'What shall we do to these men?' You see them at a loss, and once again fear of man is working all this within them.
10:89
正如在基督的事上,他們既不能推翻所成就的,也不能加以遮掩,反倒是當他們阻擋的時候,信仰的事更加增長;
Just as in the case of Christ they were not able to overturn what had been done, nor to cast a shadow over it, but rather, while they sought to hinder, the things of the faith increased all the more;
10:90
'What shall we do?' O the folly of it!
10:91
彷彿他們以為,那些已經嘗過爭戰之人,此後竟會被嚇倒似的;
as if they supposed that men who had already tasted of the struggles would henceforth be terrified;
10:92
or rather, as if, having achieved nothing at the outset, they still expected to accomplish something after such rhetoric.
10:93
所以,他們越是想要阻擋,這事就越發增長;
The more, then, that they wished to hinder, so much the more did the affair grow;
10:94
'That indeed a notable sign has come to pass through them is manifest to all who dwell in Jerusalem, and we cannot deny it.'
10:95
'But, that it may spread no further among the people, let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.'
10:96
And having called them, they commanded them not to speak at all, nor to teach, in the name of Jesus.
10:97
Behold both the shamelessness of these men and the wisdom of the apostles.
10:98
But Peter and John answered and said unto them:
10:99
'Whether it be right in the sight of God to hearken unto you rather than unto God, judge ye.'
10:100
'For we cannot but speak the things which we have seen and heard.'
10:101
And they, having threatened them further, let them go, finding no way how they might punish them, because of the people.
10:102
那些神蹟堵住了他們的口,此後他們甚至不容使徒把話講完;
The signs stopped their mouths, and thereafter they did not even suffer them to finish their discourse;
10:103
but while they were yet speaking, they cut them off, very insolently.
10:104
'For all men glorified God for that which was done.'
10:105
'For the man was above forty years old on whom this sign of healing had been wrought.'
10:106
But let us look at what has been said from the beginning.
10:107
「我們當怎樣辦這些人呢?」起初,他們所行的一切都是為了人的榮耀;
'What shall we do to these men?' At first, then, they did everything for the sake of human glory;
10:108
但如今又加上另一層動機,就是不願顯出自己是殺人的兇手;
but now another motive was added as well, namely, not to seem to be murderers;
10:109
'Ye intend to bring this man's blood upon us.'
10:110
'Let us straitly threaten them, that they speak henceforth to no man in this name.'
10:111
Being persuaded that He was risen, and having taken this as proof that He is God — the One whom death could not hold — they yet expected to cast a shadow over it by their own devices.
10:112
What is equal to this folly? And do not marvel that they again attempt what cannot be accomplished.
10:113
He sees nothing, but everywhere is thrown into confusion.
10:114
因為他們受了激動,其心態就如同被欺哄的人一般;
For being provoked, they were disposed as men who had been deceived;
10:115
which is the case with those who have been forestalled, with those who have been mocked in some matter.
10:116
And indeed, up and down, for this very reason they kept saying that God raised Him, and that in the name of Jesus this man stands here whole, showing that Jesus was risen.
10:117
從另一方面說,他們自己也持守一種復活的觀念——固然是一種冷淡而幼稚的觀念,但畢竟仍持守著;
In another way, they themselves also held to a resurrection — a cold and childish one, indeed, yet held to it nonetheless;
10:118
but now they disbelieve and are thrown into confusion, deliberating what to do with them.
10:119
This alone, then, was not sufficient to persuade them of anything —
10:120
that these men should so discourse with boldness. Why do you disbelieve, tell me, O Jew? For you ought to have given heed to the sign that was wrought and to the words, not to the wickedness of the many.
10:121
And why in the world do they not hand them over to the Romans? They had already been brought into ill repute with them from the affairs concerning Christ, so that they rather worsened their own case by deferring the accusation against these men.
10:122
But in the case of Christ it was not so; rather, seizing Him in the dead of night, they led Him away at once, and did not delay, being greatly afraid of the multitude.
10:123
But concerning these men they neither took courage, nor indeed do they bring them to Pilate, being wary and suspicious of the former events, lest they be charged over those matters as well.
10:124
'And it came to pass on the morrow, that their rulers, and elders, and scribes were gathered together at Jerusalem.'
10:125
Again councils in Jerusalem, and there blood is poured out; not even the city did they reverence.
10:126
這正是那位連使女向他發問時都受不住的人,在那事上,當別人被拿住的時候,他竟三次不認主;
This is the man who could not bear even the maidservant when she questioned him, but in that case denied, when another was under arrest;
10:127
but now, coming forth into their midst, see how he speaks.
10:128
'If we this day be examined concerning the good deed done to an impotent man, by what means he is made whole, be it known unto you all.'
10:129
And they say, 'By what name did ye do this?' Why do you not say what sort of name, but cast a shadow over it? 'By what name did ye do this?' And yet he had said, 'It was not we who did it.'
10:130
He did not say straightway, 'In the name of Jesus we did it;'
10:131
but what? 'In His name this man stands here before you whole.'
10:132
And he does not say, 'He was made whole by us.'
10:133
And again, 'If we be examined concerning the good deed done to an impotent man.'
10:134
他責打他們,指出他們素來就作這樣的控告,且對施於人的善行加以指摘;
He strikes them as men who ever bring such accusations, and who find fault with kindnesses done to men;
10:135
又題醒他們從前的事,就是他們自己奔向殺人流血;
and he reminds them of former things, that they themselves run to commit murders;
10:136
and not only this, but they even bring charges over kind deeds.
10:137
Do you see how his words carry weight and severity? For in these things they were being trained, and thereafter they were undismayed.
10:138
By which he shows them that they themselves, unwilling though they be, rather proclaim Christ, and that they themselves — the very ones examining and interrogating — exalt the doctrine.
10:139
'Whom God raised from the dead.'
10:140
This again is of yet greater freedom of speech.
10:141
What he says, therefore, is this:
10:142
'Do not suppose that we are hiding what is reproachful;'
10:143
'so far are we from casting a shadow over it, that we even speak of it boldly.'
10:144
These things he speaks all but reproaching them, and not simply so, but he even dwells upon the word, saying, 'This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders.'
10:145
Then, showing that they had thereby made it into something highly approved, he adds:
10:146
'Which is become the head of the corner;'
10:147
that is, He who is by nature honourable and approved, this One was set at nought.
10:148
Thus from the sign they took great boldness.
10:149
But consider for me how, when there is need to teach, they bring forward many prophecies, but when there is need to speak boldly, they simply make a declaration.
10:150
'For neither,' he says, 'is there any other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.'
10:151
Because the name was given to all men, and not to these alone.
10:152
To this end he brings them themselves also as witnesses.
10:153
'By what name did ye do it?' 'By that of Christ,' he says; 'there is no other name.'
10:154
'Why then do ye ask?' Thus everywhere this is made plain.
10:155
'For neither is there any other name under heaven,' he says, 'whereby we must be saved.'
10:156
These are the words of a soul that has condemned the present life.
10:157
Their great boldness shows this.
10:158
他在此表明,即使他從前論到基督時說了些卑微的話,那並非出於懼怕,而是出於俯就之意;
Here he makes it plain that even when he spoke lowly things concerning Christ, it was not out of fear, but by way of condescension;
10:159
but since now the fitting moment had come, he speaks such lofty things as by this very means to strike with amazement all who heard.
10:160
Behold yet another sign, no less than the former one.
10:161
'And they took knowledge of them,' he says, 'that they had been with Jesus.'
10:162
The evangelist did not set down this detail without purpose, but that he might also make clear where they had been.
10:163
因為當那些人看見他們卑微、畏縮的時候,唯有這幾位是與他同在的;
For these alone were with him at that time, when they saw them lowly and cowed;
10:164
and this above all astonished them—the sudden transformation.
10:165
因為亞那和該亞法並他們一夥的人也在那裏,這些人也就站在他們旁邊;
For there too were Annas and Caiaphas and their company, and these very men stood beside them;
10:166
and their exceeding boldness of speech astounded them.
10:167
For it was not by their words only that they showed themselves careless of such things, though being judged and with the utmost peril hanging over them, but also by their bearing, their voice, their look, and in all things simply they displayed their boldness before the people, out of the very things they uttered.
10:168
他們或許稀奇這些人既是沒有學問的,又是平常的人;
They marvelled perhaps that the men were both unlettered and common folk;
10:169
因為一個人可能是沒有學問的,卻未必也是平常無知的;
since it is possible for one to be unlettered, yet not withal a common man;
10:170
or a common man, yet not unlettered.
10:171
Here he shows that the two met together.
10:172
他並不長篇大論,只從那宣告本身並其前後一致,就顯明了他們的放膽;
He does not draw out long speeches, but from the very announcement and its consistency he makes plain their boldness;
10:173
so that they would have laid hands on them, had not the man been standing with them.
10:174
'And they took knowledge of them,' he says, 'that they had been with Jesus.'
10:175
This was what made them believe that they had learned these things from him, and that as his disciples they were doing all things.
10:176
那奇事與神蹟所發出的聲音,並不亞於這些人的聲音;
And no less than the voice of these men did the miracle and the sign send forth a voice;
10:177
which indeed above all stopped their mouths.
10:178
'If it be right,' he says, 'in the sight of God to hearken to you rather than to God, judge ye.'
10:179
當他們的懼怕反倒被削減之後(因為那警戒不過等於被釋放),他們也就說得更加溫和;
When their fear had rather been cut short (for the charge laid on them was nothing else than to be let go), then also they speak more mildly;
10:180
'That a notable sign has been done—we cannot deny it.'
10:181
So that they would have denied it, had this not been so, had there not been the testimony of the many.
10:182
And indeed it was manifest to all.
10:183
But such is wickedness—reckless and shameless.
10:184
What sayest thou? Do you expect by threat to halt the preaching? Thus everywhere are beginnings both hard and difficult.
10:185
你們殺了那教師,卻沒有把它阻止住;
You slew the Teacher, and you did not halt it;
10:186
and now, if you threaten, do you expect to make us desist?
10:187
The bond did not persuade them to discourse submissively—and will you persuade them? Assuredly not: men who count you and your threats as nothing.
10:188
'If it be right,' he says, 'in the sight of God to hearken to you rather than to God.'
10:189
Here they say 'God' in place of 'Christ.'
10:190
Do you see how now that came to pass which he had told them:
10:191
'Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves;'
10:192
Then again they confirm the resurrection by that which they add, saying:
10:193
'We cannot but speak the things which we saw and heard.'
10:194
So that we indeed are trustworthy witnesses, while you, threatening besides, threaten again in vain.
10:195
他們本當因百姓為之歸榮耀與神的那些事而回轉,卻反倒揚言要殺害他們;
Whereas they ought rather to have changed their course over the things for which the people glorified God, they instead even threaten to slay them;
10:196
'And they, when they had further threatened them, let them go.'
10:197
Thereupon they became more conspicuous and more illustrious.
10:198
'For my power,' he says, 'is made perfect in weakness.'
10:199
These men had already borne their witness, having set themselves in array against all things.
10:200
「我們所看見所聽見的,不能不說」是甚麼意思呢?他是說:我們所說的若是虛謊,你就抓住我們;
What means, 'We cannot but speak the things which we saw and heard'? If the things we say are false, he means, take hold of us;
10:201
but if they are true, why do you hinder? Such is true wisdom.
10:202
那些人在困惑之中,這些人在喜樂之中;
Those men were in perplexity, these in gladness;
10:203
那些人滿載羞愧,這些人放膽行一切事;
those laden with much shame, these doing all things with boldness;
10:204
those in fear, these in confidence.
10:205
請你告訴我,那懼怕的是誰呢?是說「免得越發傳揚在民間」的人,還是說「我們所看見所聽見的,不能不說」的人呢?在喜悅中、在放膽中、在勝過眾人的喜樂中的,乃是這些人;
For who, tell me, were they that feared? Those who said, 'That it spread no further among the people,' or those who said, 'We cannot but speak the things which we saw and heard'? And in pleasure, in boldness, and in gladness greater than all, were these;
10:206
those others in despondency, in shame, in fear.
10:207
這些人隨心所願地說出來;
These uttered what they willed;
10:208
those others did not do what they willed.
10:209
Who were in bonds and in perils? Was it not these above all?
10:210
所以我們務要持守德行;
Let us therefore lay hold of virtue;
10:211
let not the things spoken be for delight only, nor merely for some passing consolation.
10:212
This is not a theatre, beloved, of harpers or of tragic actors, where the fruit lasts only so long as the pleasure, and when the day is past the pleasure has passed away.
10:213
但願只有愉悅,而沒有與愉悅同來的損害才好;
And would that there were pleasure alone, and not harm along with the pleasure;
10:214
然而各人卻從那裏回到自己家中,彷彿沾染了那裏許多的污穢,如同從某種穢物上抹了一身;
yet nevertheless each one goes off from there to his home, as though having wiped upon himself, as from some defilement, many of the things there;
10:215
那少年人抓住了那些屬撒但之歌的曲調,凡他所能存留在記憶中的,就在家中不住地哼唱;
and the young man, having caught up some strains of those satanic songs, as many as he was able to lay up in his memory, continually sings them at home;
10:216
while the old man, as being more grave, does not do this, but remembers all the words that were spoken there.
10:217
這豈不是可羞恥的麼?我們立過一條律法;
And how is this not worthy of shame? We enacted a law;
10:218
更確切地說,並非我們所立的;
or rather, it was not we who enacted it;
10:219
'For call no man,' he says, 'master upon the earth.'
10:220
Christ enacted a law that no one should swear.
10:221
What has become, tell me, of this law? For I will not cease discoursing upon it, lest coming again, according to the Apostle, I should not spare.
10:222
那麼,你們曾為這事掛心麼?曾留意麼?你們裏面可曾生出甚麼殷勤,還是我們要再提起同樣的話呢?倒不如說,無論成了與否,我們都要再提起同樣的話,好叫你們留心;
Have you then given thought to the matter? Have you taken care? Has any diligence arisen in you, or shall we again take up the same words? Nay rather, whether it has come to pass or not, we shall take up the same words, that you may give heed;
10:223
and if you have taken care, that you may again work this out more firmly, and may exhort the others also.
10:224
Whence then must we begin our discourse? Will you have it from the Old Testament? But this is our shame, that the things in the Old, which we ought to have surpassed, not even these do we keep.
10:225
For we ought not to be hearing about these things (for these precepts belong to the meanness of the Jewish way), but about those perfect ones:
10:226
撇下錢財,剛強站立,為所傳的道捨命,藐視地上的一切,叫你與今生毫無相干;
Cast away riches, stand nobly, give up your soul for the preaching, laugh to scorn all things upon the earth, let nothing be common to you with the present life;
10:227
若有人虧負你,你就以善待他;
if any wrong you, do him good;
10:228
If he takes advantage of you, bless him.
10:229
These things and the like are what we ought to be hearing.
10:230
But as it is, we are discoursing about the matter of oaths.
10:231
And it comes to the same thing as if someone were to drag away from those teachers a man who ought to be studying philosophy, and set him to reading syllables and spelling out letter by letter.
10:232
Consider, I pray you, what great shame it would be for a man with a full-grown beard, carrying a staff and wearing a workman's tunic, to go off to school along with the boys and learn the very same things they do—would there not be much laughter? Yet ours is even greater.
10:233
For the difference between the Jewish polity and ours is not merely as great as that between philosophy and the alphabet, but as great as that between angels and men.
10:234
If someone, tell me, were to bring an angel down from heaven and command him to stand here and listen to our discourses, as though he were bound to be regulated by them, would it not be a shame and a laughing-matter? And if it be laughable to be still under instruction in these things—
10:235
then not even to give heed to these things—tell me, how great is the condemnation? how great the shame? For how is it not a matter of shame that Christians are still being taught that they must not swear? Nevertheless, let us bear with it, that we be not the more laughed to scorn.
10:236
Come then, let us today discourse to you from the Old Testament.
10:237
And what does it say? 'Let not your mouth become accustomed to swearing, neither make a habit of naming the Holy One.'
10:238
Why? For just as a servant who is continually examined will not be cleared from bruises, so neither will the one who swears.
10:239
Mark the discernment of this wise man.
10:240
他沒有說「不要讓你的心思慣於起誓」,乃是說「你的口」;
He did not say, 'Let not your mind become accustomed to swearing,' but 'your mouth';
10:241
because he knew that the whole matter belongs to the mouth, and that it is easily set right.
10:242
因為如今這已成了一種不經意就發生的習慣;
For it is now become a habit that comes to pass without deliberate choice;
10:243
such as are many who, on entering the baths, the moment they cross the threshold, cross themselves.
10:244
This the hand knows to do of its own habit, without anyone bidding it.
10:245
Again, when a lamp is lit, though the mind is often occupied with something else, the hand makes the sign of the cross.
10:246
So too the mouth utters not with the soul, but from habit, and the whole thing lies in the tongue.
10:247
'And with the name of the Holy One,' he says, 'do not make a habit.'
10:248
For just as a servant who is continually examined will not be cleared from bruises, so neither will the one who swears.
10:249
It is not perjury that he here cuts off, but the oath itself, and to this he assigns the punishment.
10:250
Such indeed is the soul: it is full of so many wounds, so many bruises.
10:251
然而你豈看不見它麼?這正是可怕之處;
But do you not see it? For this is the dreadful thing;
10:252
其實你若願意,是能夠看見的;
and yet you are able, if you will, to see;
10:253
for God has given you eyes.
10:254
With such eyes the prophet saw, when he said:
10:255
'My bruises stink and are corrupt because of my foolishness.'
10:256
We have despised God, we have hated the good name, we have trampled upon Christ, we have cast off all reverence; no one makes mention of the name of God with honor.
10:257
你若愛某人,一聽見他的名,就振奮起來;
And you, if you love someone, at the mention of his name you spring up in eager attention;
10:258
but God you call upon so continually as though it were nothing.
10:259
當為著善待仇敵而呼求祂;
Call upon Him for the doing of good to an enemy;
10:260
當為著你自己魂的救恩而呼求祂;
call upon Him for the salvation of your own soul;
10:261
那時祂必臨在,那時你必使祂喜悅;
then will He be present, then will you gladden Him;
10:262
Call upon Him as Stephen called.
10:263
Saying what? 'Lord, lay not this sin to their charge.'
10:264
Call upon Him as Elkanah's wife called, with tears, with lamentations, with prayer.
10:265
I do not forbid it, but I even strongly exhort it.
10:266
Call upon Him as Moses called, when he cried out interceding on behalf of those who had driven him into exile.
10:267
你若只是隨口提及某位可敬的人,這事便被視為冒犯;
And you, if you simply make mention of some venerable man, the thing is deemed an outrage;
10:268
but when you bandy God about, not merely lightly but even unseasonably in your words, do you count the matter as nothing? And of how great a punishment would you not be worthy? I do not forbid you to have God ever in your mind (for this indeed I both pray for and desire), but do it not contrary to what is pleasing to Him—rather praising, rather honoring Him.
10:269
This would have wrought great good for us, if only we called upon Him when we ought, and for the things for which we ought.
10:270
Why, tell me, in the time of the apostles were so many mighty works done, but among us are they not? And yet it is the same God, the same name.
10:271
怎麼會這樣呢?因為他們只為著我所提說的那些事呼求祂;
How so? Because they called upon Him only for those things which I have mentioned;
10:272
but we call not for these things, but for others.
10:273
但若他不信,你因此便起誓,你倒不如說:「你要信」;
But if he disbelieves, and for this cause you swear, say rather, 'Believe';
10:274
or, if you will, swear against yourself.
10:275
我這樣說,並非要與基督立相反的律——斷乎不是;
I say this not as legislating against Christ—God forbid;
10:276
因為祂說:「你們的話,是就說是,不是就說不是」;
for 'Let your Yea,' He says, 'be yea, and your Nay, nay';
10:277
but condescending to you, that I may the more lead you to this and draw you away from that tyrannical habit.
10:278
How many who were of good repute in other respects have been ruined by these matters? Do you wish to learn why swearing was permitted to the ancients? (for perjury was not permitted even to them).
10:279
It was because they used to swear by idols.
10:280
你們持守這些律法而不覺羞恥麼?這些律法乃是那些軟弱之人被引導遵守的。因為即使如今,我若遇見一個希臘人,也不立刻把這誡命加在他身上,乃是暫且勸他先認識基督;
Are you not ashamed to abide by these laws, to which those weak ones were brought? Since even now, if I get hold of a Greek, I do not straightway lay this command upon him, but for the time I exhort him to know Christ;
10:281
but the believer, who has both learned Him and heard Him, if he still needs the same condescension as the Greek, what is the profit? what the gain? But habit is a hard thing, and you find it difficult to be torn away? Well then, since the tyranny of habit is so great, transfer it into another habit.
10:282
我屢次所說的,現在也再說一次;
What I have often said, this I say now also;
10:283
Let there be many who take account of what is spoken, let there be examiners and correctors.
10:284
被別人糾正並非羞恥;
It is no shame to be corrected by others;
10:285
rather it is a shame to thrust away those who would correct, and to do this to the hurt of one's own salvation.
10:286
你若把衣服穿反了,尚且容讓一個僮僕來為你整理,並不以向他學習為恥——雖然在這事上有許多羞恥可言;
And you, if you put on your garment inside out, you allow even a servant-boy to set it right, and are not ashamed to learn from him—though in this there is much shame;
10:287
but here, when your soul is being harmed, are you ashamed, tell me, to be instructed by another? And while you allow your servant to arrange your garment and put on your shoes, you do not allow him to arrange your soul? And how great is this folly? Let a servant even be the teacher of these things, let it be a child, let it be a woman, let it be a friend, a kinsman, a neighbor.
10:288
因為正如一頭四面被追趕的野獸無法逃脫;
For just as a wild beast hunted from every side cannot escape;
10:289
so he who has so many guardians, so many to rebuke him, who is struck from every side, cannot but keep himself in check.
10:290
頭一天他要覺得難以忍受,第二天、第三天也是如此;
And on the first day he will bear it with difficulty, and on the second, and on the third;
10:291
but thereafter it will be very easy, and after the fourth the thing itself will no longer even be there.
10:292
Make trial of it, if indeed you disbelieve.
10:293
It is no ordinary thing to sin in this, nor to do right, but on either side it is a great matter, both the evil and the good.
10:294
And may it be granted us to attain the good, by the grace and lovingkindness of our Lord Jesus Christ, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
