Now when they heard these words, they were pricked in their heart, and said to Peter and to the rest of the apostles,
7:2
'Men and brethren, what shall we do?' (I.)
7:3
Do you see how great a good is gentleness? It pierces our hearts more than vehemence does, and inflicts a sharper wound.
7:4
因為正如對那已然硬化的身體,擊打的人不能使痛感如此強烈;
For just as in the case of hardened bodies, one who strikes does not make the sensation so keen;
7:5
但若先將它揉軟,使之柔嫩,那時扎刺就更為深切;
but if one first softens them and renders them supple, then he pricks more sharply;
7:6
so indeed here too one must first soften and then prick.
7:7
能軟化人心的,不是怒氣,不是猛烈的控訴,也不是責罵,而是溫良;
What softens is not wrath, nor vehement accusation, nor reproaches, but gentleness;
7:8
for the former only intensifies the hardening, whereas gentleness does away with it.
7:9
So then, if you wish to take to task someone who has done wrong, approach him with much meekness.
7:10
See, at any rate, what Peter does even here:
7:11
他溫和地提醒他們自己所犯的膽大妄為之事,卻沒有多加一句;
he reminded them gently of their own reckless deeds, and added nothing further;
7:12
he spoke of the gift of God, he brought forward the grace that bore witness to what had come to pass, and he carried the discourse yet further.
7:13
They were put to shame by Peter's forbearance, that to those who had crucified his Master and were bent on murdering them too, he spoke in the manner of a father and a caring teacher.
7:14
他們不僅被說服,而且定了自己的罪;
They were not merely persuaded, but they condemned themselves;
7:15
他們醒悟到所行的事。因為他不容他們的怒氣被激起、以致蒙蔽了心智;
they came to a sense of what had been done. For he did not permit their wrath to be roused and to darken their understanding;
7:16
but through humility, as though scattering some mist, namely their indignation, he thus laid bare the outrage that had been committed.
7:17
事情正是如此:當我們說自己受了委屈,對方便竭力要證明他們並未行不義;
For so it is: when we say that we have been wronged, the others try to show that they have done no wrong;
7:18
but when we say that we have not been wronged, but rather that we ourselves have done the wrong, they do the opposite.
7:19
So then, if you wish to bring the wrongdoer into a struggle, do not accuse him, but plead your own case, and he will accuse himself.
7:20
For the race of men is contentious.
7:21
他沒有猛烈地控訴他們,反倒幾乎是盡可能溫和地為道理力爭;
He did not accuse them vehemently, but rather almost strove to make his case gently, so far as was possible;
7:22
and for this reason he reaches down to touch their very soul.
7:23
And from what is it evident that they were pricked to the heart? From their own words.
7:24
For what do they say? 'What shall we do, men and brethren?' Those whom they had called deceivers they now call brethren.
7:25
Not so much placing themselves on an equal footing as drawing them toward affection and tender care.
7:26
此外,既然他們認為配得如此稱呼那些人,並說「我們當怎樣行?」他們並沒有立刻自作主張;
But besides, since they themselves deemed it fitting to call them by this name, and say, 'What shall we do?' they did not immediately declare it;
7:27
but they entrusted themselves to them.
7:28
正如一個遭了船難或患了疾病的人,一見舵手或醫生,便把一切都讓給他、聽從他;
Just as one who has fallen into shipwreck or into sickness, on seeing the pilot or the physician, yields everything to him and obeys;
7:29
so these too confessed that they were in the utmost extremity and had not even a hope of salvation.
7:30
They did not say, 'How may we be saved?' but, 'What shall we do?' What then does Peter say? Here again, when all had inquired, he answers, saying, 'Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.'
7:31
他還沒有說「你們要信」;
And he does not yet say, 'Believe';
7:32
but, 'Let each of you be baptized.'
7:33
For this they received in baptism.
7:34
接著他也指明其中的益處;
Then he points out the gain as well;
7:35
'and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'
7:36
If you shall receive a gift, if baptism confers remission, why do you delay? Then, making his argument persuasive, he added:
7:37
'For the promise is to you.'
7:38
This too he says here, the very thing he had said above when discoursing.
7:39
'And to your children,' he says.
7:40
Therefore the gift is the greater, when they have their children also as heirs of the good things.
7:41
'And to all,' he says, 'that are afar off.'
7:42
If to those that are afar off, much more to you who are near.
7:43
'As many as the Lord our God shall call.'
7:44
See when he says, 'To those that are afar off.'
7:45
是在他發現他們已被贏得、且自定己罪的時候;
When he found them made his own and self-condemned;
7:46
for when the soul condemns itself, it can no longer be envious.
7:47
And with many other words he testified and exhorted, saying:
7:48
See how everywhere he cuts short, and does not court honor, nor make a display: 'He testified,' it says, 'and exhorted, saying.'
7:49
This is a complete and perfect teaching, having the one part from fear, the other from love.
7:50
'Save yourselves from this crooked generation.'
7:51
他絲毫不提將來的事,只講眼前的事,人多半正是被這些事所催逼;
He says nothing about things to come, but about things present, by which men are most of all constrained;
7:52
and he shows that the preaching delivers from both present and future evils.
7:53
於是,那些歡歡喜喜領受他話語的人就受了洗;
So then, those who gladly received his word were baptized;
7:54
and there were added on that day about three thousand souls.
7:55
How do you think this won over the apostles even more than the miracle did? 'And they continued steadfastly with one accord in the teaching of the apostles and in the fellowship.'
7:56
Two virtues: both the persevering, and the being of one accord.
7:57
He says this in order to show that the apostles taught them for a long time.
7:58
'in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers.'
7:59
'They did all things in common, all with perseverance,' he says.
7:60
'And fear came upon every soul of those who believed, and many wonders and signs were done through the apostles.'
7:61
For they did not despise these things as if they were common, nor did they attend to the things seen, but their understanding was set aflame.
7:62
And since Peter from above was flowing in full stream, and was setting forth the promises and the things to come, it was fitting that they were struck with fear, and the miracles bore witness to what was being said.
7:63
正如在基督的事上,先有神蹟,接著是教訓,然後是奇事;
Just as in the case of Christ there were first signs, then teaching, then wonders;
7:64
'And all who believed were together, and had all things in common.'
7:65
See at once how great the increase.
7:66
For the fellowship was not only in the prayers, nor only in the teaching, but also in the manner of life.
7:67
'And they sold their possessions and goods, and distributed them to all, according as anyone had need.'
7:68
See how much fear had come to be in them! 'And they distributed them.'
7:69
This he said, making plain the good management.
7:70
'According as anyone had need.'
7:71
Not carelessly, as the philosophers among the Greeks, some of whom let their land lie fallow, while others cast much gold into the sea, which was not out of contempt for riches, but out of folly and senselessness.
7:72
For everywhere the devil has always been zealous to slander the creatures of God, as though it were impossible to use riches rightly.
7:73
'And continuing daily with one accord in the temple.'
7:74
Here he teaches the manner in which they enjoyed the teaching.
7:75
And observe how the Jews did nothing else, small or great, but waited upon the temple.
7:76
For inasmuch as they had become more earnest, they also had greater reverence concerning the place.
7:77
For the apostles did not as yet draw them away from these things, so as to do them no harm.
7:78
And breaking bread from house to house, they partook of food with gladness and singleness of heart, praising God, and having favor with all the people.
7:79
By 'bread' he seems to me to mean, and to signify here, both fasting and the austere manner of life.
7:80
For they partook of nourishment (trophe), not of luxury (truphe).
7:81
From this, beloved, learn that it is not luxury, but nourishment, that produces true enjoyment.
7:82
And that those who live in luxury are in sorrow, whereas those who do not live in luxury are in joy.
7:83
Do you see that Peter's words had this effect also, the chastening of one's manner of life? Thus it is not possible for gladness to arise where there is no simplicity.
7:84
And how, he asks, did they have favor with all the people? Through the things they did by their almsgiving.
7:85
你不要單看這一點,就是大祭司們出於嫉妒與惡意起來攻擊他們;
For do not look at this to me, that the chief priests set upon them out of envy and malice.
7:86
but rather that they had favor with the people.
7:87
And the Lord added to the Church daily those who were being saved.
7:88
And all who believed were together in the same place.
7:89
Thus everywhere concord is a good thing.
7:90
And with other words he solemnly testified.
7:91
他這樣說,是要顯明先前所講的話還不足夠;
This he said, showing that what had been spoken was not sufficient.
7:92
Or else those words were spoken so as to lead them to faith, while these tell what the believer ought to do.
7:93
And he did not say, 'Upon the cross,' but, 'Let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ.'
7:94
Nor does he continually remind them of the cross, lest he should seem to be reproaching them, but simply says, 'Repent, and let each be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins.'
7:95
誠然,這世上法庭的規條乃是另一回事;
And indeed the law of the courts here below is otherwise;
7:96
but in the preaching of the gospel, when the sinner confesses, then he is saved.
7:97
你看,彼得並沒有略過那更大的事;
See how Peter did not pass over the greater thing;
7:98
but having first spoken of the grace, then he added that also, saying:
7:99
'You shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.'
7:100
The word is worthy of belief from the very fact of what they themselves had received.
7:101
For at first he speaks of what is easy and holds a great gift, and only then does he lead them on to the manner of life, knowing that having already tasted such great blessings would be for them a ground of earnest zeal.
7:102
But since the hearer longed to learn what was the sum of the many words, he adds this too, showing that it is the gift of the Holy Spirit.
7:103
So then those who received the word praised what had been said, though it was full of fear, and after their assent they then came to the baptism.
7:104
But let us look at what was said from the beginning.
7:105
They were, he says, continuing steadfastly in the teaching.
7:106
From this it is plain that they were taught not one day, nor two or three, but over many days, inasmuch as they had passed over to another manner of life.
7:107
If upon all, then also upon those who did not believe.
7:108
他們既看見這些事,一時之間經歷這樣大的轉變,也是理所當然的;
And it was likely that they experienced so great a change all at once when they saw these things;
7:109
and perhaps also from the signs. He did not say, 'Together,' but, 'With one accord,' since it is possible for some to be together, yet not with one accord, being divided in their opinions.
7:110
就是在此,他也沒有述說那教訓的內容,乃是簡略帶過;
And not even here does he state the teaching, cutting short the account;
7:111
but one may learn that, as if they were young children, they nourished them with spiritual food.
7:112
And they had now become angels all at once.
7:113
And they distributed to each according as anyone had need.
7:114
They saw that spiritual things are common, and that no one has more than another, and quickly they came to distribute their possessions to all.
7:115
And all who believed were together in the same place.
7:116
That they were together not merely in place is plain from what he added, saying, 'And they had all things common.'
7:117
All, he says, not this one yes, and that one no.
7:118
This is angelic citizenship, that they should call nothing of their own their private possession.
7:119
From this the root of evils was cut off, and by what they did they showed that they had heard.
7:120
So then this was what he meant when he said, 'Be saved from this crooked generation.'
7:121
And there were added on that day about three thousand souls.
7:122
既已成了三千人,他們此後便帶著眾人出去;這些人既已有了滿滿的膽量,就天天上聖殿去,殷勤聚集在那裡;
Since they had become three thousand, they thereafter led them out abroad, who also with boldness—since there was now much of it—went up daily and attended in the temple;
7:123
因為彼得和約翰稍後也照樣行;
for Peter and John also, a little later, do the very same thing;
7:124
for as yet they were in no way stirring up any of the Jewish observances.
7:125
And this very honor paid to the place passed over to the Master of the temple.
7:126
你看見那虔誠的增長麼?他們拋棄了錢財,卻歡喜快樂,滿有喜樂;
Do you see the increase of devotion? They cast away their money, and rejoiced, and great was their gladness;
7:127
for greater were the good things they received.
7:128
無人譏誚,無人嫉妒,無人存惡意,沒有驕傲,也沒有輕看人;
No one reproached, no one envied, no one begrudged, there was no arrogance, there was no contempt;
7:129
like little children they thought to be trained, and were disposed as if newborn babes.
7:130
我何必用這樣朦朧的比方來說呢?你們若記得,當神震動我們的城時,眾人都謙卑收斂,那些人當時的心境也正是如此;
And why do I speak as in a dim image? If you remember how, when God shook our city, and all were humbled, so were those men disposed at that time;
7:131
no one was insincere, no one was wicked.
7:132
For such is fear, such is affliction.
7:133
There was not that cold word, 'Mine,' and, 'Thine.'
7:134
所以他們在席上滿有歡喜快樂;
Therefore there was gladness at the table;
7:135
無人覺得自己是吃自己的,也無人覺得是吃別人的;
no one felt as if eating from his own, no one as if from another's;
7:136
and yet this seems to be a riddle.
7:137
They neither regarded the things of their brethren as belonging to others;
7:138
nor as their own, but as belonging to the brethren.
7:139
Neither was the poor man ashamed, nor was the rich man puffed up.
7:140
And the one was disposed as though receiving a benefit, and rather as being well treated; and these as being glorified thereby, and were very closely bound to them.
7:141
For since in the distributions of money it happens that insults, and acts of madness, and griefs arise, on this account the Apostle said:
7:142
'Not grudgingly, or of necessity.'
7:143
See how many things he testifies of them: genuine faith, an upright life, endurance in hearing, in prayers, in simplicity, in gladness.
7:144
Two things were enough to cast them into despondency, both the fasting, and the distributing of their money.
7:145
But they rejoiced on account of both.
7:146
For who would not have loved men so disposed as common fathers?
7:147
他們彼此之間並不圖謀任何惡事;
They devised no evil against one another;
7:148
they committed the whole matter to the grace of God.
7:149
There was no fear, and this though they had cast themselves into the midst of dangers.
7:150
Accordingly, through their simplicity he displayed the whole of their virtue, a virtue far greater even than their contempt for riches, than their fasting, and than their steadfastness in prayer.
7:151
And thus too they praised God purely; nay rather, this is what it means to praise God.
7:152
See here too how they immediately receive their recompense.
7:153
For to have favour with the people means this, that they were beloved and greatly desired by all.
7:154
For who would not admire, who would not marvel at a man simple in his character? Or who would not be bound in friendship to one who has nothing underhanded? And whose is salvation if not theirs? Whose are the great good things? Were not the shepherds the first to receive the good tidings? Was not Joseph a simple man, so that, fearing the suspicion of adultery, he would not do anything evil? Did not God choose the rustic and the unfeigned? For 'every simple soul,' it says, 'is blessed.'
7:155
And again: 'He that walks in simplicity walks confidently.'
7:156
純樸豈不正是明智嗎?因為當你不疑心任何惡事時,你也就無法謀劃惡事;
What is simplicity but prudence? For when you suspect no evil, you are unable to contrive evil;
7:157
when you harbour none of these grievous things, neither will you be able to bear a grudge.
7:158
Has someone reviled you? You have suffered nothing.
7:159
Has someone envied you? Not even so have you suffered anything.
7:160
Simplicity is a road that leads to true wisdom.
7:161
No one is so beautiful in soul as the simple man.
7:162
因為正如在身體上,那陰鬱、沮喪、憂愁的人,縱然俊美,也削減了許多他的秀美;
For just as in the body the man who is sullen and downcast and moody, even if he be handsome, cuts off much of his comeliness;
7:163
反倒那舒展、面帶柔和微笑的人,卻使他的秀美更增;
whereas he who is easy-going and gently smiling in countenance heightens his comeliness;
7:164
在靈魂上也正是如此:那憂愁的人,縱有千萬善行,也將它們遮蔽了;
so also is it with the soul: the moody man, even if he has countless good deeds to his credit, obscures them;
7:165
but the relaxed and simple man does the contrary.
7:166
Such a man one could make a friend in perfect security, and, should he become an enemy, one could reconcile him.
7:167
For with such a man there is no need of guard or fore-guard, nor of bonds and fetters; but great will be the ease he enjoys, and great too the ease of those who live with him.
7:168
'What then,' one asks, 'if such a man fall among wicked men?' God, who has bidden us be unfeigned, will stretch out His hand.
7:169
有誰比大衛更純樸呢?又有誰比掃羅更邪惡呢?那麼究竟是誰得勝了呢?約瑟的事又如何呢?他豈不是毫無詭詐地親近他主母,而她卻以奸惡待他嗎?那麼你告訴我,那人受了虧損嗎?亞伯又豈不是最純樸的嗎?該隱又豈不是最奸惡的嗎?約瑟豈不是又以毫無詭詐待他的弟兄嗎?他之所以蒙嘉許,豈不正因為他毫無疑心地說出一切,而他們卻懷著奸惡領受嗎?他一次說出他的夢,又再次說出,全不加防備;
What was simpler than David? What was more wicked than Saul? Which of them then prevailed? And what of Joseph? Did he not approach his mistress guilelessly, while she acted with malice? Tell me then, was that man wronged? And what was simpler than Abel? What more malicious than Cain? Again, did not Joseph deal guilelessly with his brothers? Was he not held in high esteem for this very reason, that he spoke everything without suspicion, while they received it maliciously? He told his dreams once, and told them again, and took no precaution;
7:170
他又帶著食物往他們那裡去,絲毫不加防備,將一切全然交託於神;
and again he went off to them carrying provisions, and took no precaution at all, committing the whole matter to God;
7:171
but in proportion as they were disposed toward him as toward an enemy, so was he disposed toward them as toward brothers.
7:172
And God could have kept him from falling into their hands, but He allowed it, that the wonder might be shown, and that, even if they displayed their own conduct, he would prove himself the higher.
7:173
So that even if he receives a blow, it is not from himself but from another that he receives it.
7:174
但那惡人首先擊打的乃是他自己,並無別人;
But the wicked man first strikes himself, and no one else;
7:175
thus is he even at war with himself.
7:176
這樣之人的靈魂總是充滿愁苦,他的思慮總是糾結纏繞;
The soul of such a man is ever full of despondency, his reasonings being ever bound up in knots;
7:177
and whether he must hear or say anything, he does it all with fault-finding, all with accusation.
7:178
友誼與同心在這樣的人面前遠遠地退避,安居於遙遠之處;
Friendship and concord dwell far and remote from such men;
7:179
but with them are quarrels and enmities and vexations, and such men are suspicious even of themselves.
7:180
For these men not even sleep is sweet, nor anything else.
7:181
唉!他們與眾人為敵,成了眾人的仇敵;
Alas! they become enemies and foes to all;
7:182
無數的猜忌,不斷的懼怕;
countless jealousies, continual fear;
7:183
for the word 'wicked' (poneros) is derived from 'toil' (ponein).
7:184
And thus indeed Scripture too always calls wickedness 'toil,' as when it says, 'Under his tongue is trouble and toil;'
7:185
and again elsewhere, 'And the greater part of them is toil and trouble.'
7:186
But if anyone should wonder how it was that at the beginning they became such men, but now are not such, let him learn that the cause is affliction—the teacher of true wisdom, the mother of godly reverence.
7:187
When there was the giving up of possessions, then there was no wickedness either.
7:188
But now, whence comes such great wickedness?
7:189
何以那三千人與五千人立刻就揀選了美德,並且一同成了愛慕真智慧的人,而如今卻難得尋見一個這樣的人呢?那時他們何以那樣同心合意?是甚麼使他們熱切而振奮?是甚麼忽然點燃了他們?乃因他們是懷著極大的敬虔前來的;
Whence did it come upon those three thousand and five thousand to choose virtue at once, and all together to become lovers of wisdom, whereas now scarcely one such man is to be found? How was it that they then were so of one accord? What made them fervent and thoroughly aroused? What suddenly set them on fire? Because they came forward with great reverence;
7:190
因為那時尊榮位分之事並不像如今這樣;
because matters of honour and rank were not as they are now;
7:191
because they transferred their mind to the things to come, and expected nothing of things present.
7:192
這正是一個被點燃之靈魂的標記——就是能在危難之中周旋不退;
This is the mark of a soul set on fire—to be caught up amid perils;
7:193
this those men reckoned to be Christianity.
7:194
For now we seek our ease here below.
7:195
For this reason we shall not attain to these things even when we have need of them.
7:196
'What shall we do?' those men asked, despairing of themselves. But you, on the contrary, say 'What shall we do?' making a display before those present, and thinking highly of yourselves.
7:197
What ought to have been done, those men did; but we do the contrary.
7:198
那些人定了自己的罪,他們對自己的得救不存指望;
Those men condemned themselves, they despaired of their own salvation;
7:199
for this reason they became such men.
7:200
但你們既凡事都與他們相反而行,又怎能成為那樣的人呢?他們一聽見就受了洗;
But how shall you become such, when you do everything contrary to them? They no sooner heard than they were baptized;
7:201
他們並沒有說我們如今所說的那些冷淡的話,也沒有想方設法拖延;
they did not utter these cold words which we now utter, nor did they contrive delay;
7:202
and yet they had not heard all the ordinances, but only this: 'Be saved from this generation.'
7:203
這話並沒有使他們懈怠,反倒他們領受了這些話;
This did not make them slothful, but they received the words;
7:204
and that they received them, they showed by their deeds, and made plain who they were.
7:205
因為他們一進入這場角力,就脫去了衣裳;
For as soon as they entered the contest, they stripped off their garments;
7:206
but we, when we enter, wish to wrestle still clad in our garments.
7:207
For this reason our adversary needs no exertion, but often, becoming entangled in these very garments, we are thrown down.
7:208
For we do the same as if a man, seeing an athlete covered with dust,
7:209
black, stripped naked, having much mire from the sand and the sun, and stained all over with oil and sweat and clay—and he himself, reeking of perfumes, having donned silken garments and golden sandals and a robe trailing down to the ankles, and gold about his head, should step in and grapple with him.
7:210
For such a man will not only be hindered, but, having all his care set on not soiling or tearing his tunics, he will fall at the very first onset, and will straightway suffer the very thing he dreaded, receiving his loss in those vital parts.
7:211
但你竟穿上絲綢嗎?如今正是操練的時候,正是競技場的時候;
But do you clothe yourself in silks? It is the season for exercise, the season for the arena;
7:212
yet do you adorn yourself as though for a procession? And how will you prevail? Do not look to the things outside, but to the things within.
7:213
For by cares for these things, as by grievous cords, the soul is bound fast on every side, not suffered to lift a hand against the enemy nor to raise it up, being made soft and effeminate.
7:214
It is a matter for contentment if, having freed oneself of all these things, one is able to prevail over that unclean power.
7:215
For this reason Christ too, as though the mere casting away of riches were not sufficient, see what He says.
7:216
'Sell your possessions, and give to the poor, and come, follow Me.'
7:217
但若如此,即使我們已脫去了錢財,我們仍未站穩在安全之地,反倒還需要另一種本領與周密的謹慎;
But if it is so that, even when we have stripped off our riches, we do not yet stand in safety, but still have need of some further art and exactness,
7:218
how much more shall we, while possessing them, accomplish nothing great, but become a laughing-stock both to the spectators and to the evil one himself.
7:219
For even if there were no devil, even if there were none to wrestle against us, ten thousand roads on every side lead the lover of money to hell.
7:220
Where now are those who say, 'Why did the devil come to be?' Behold, here the devil works nothing at all, but we ourselves do the whole.
7:221
And indeed, it were the men in the mountains who ought to speak thus, they who, after chastity and contempt of riches and disdain of all else, have chosen a thousand times over to forsake father and house and fields and wife and children.
7:222
然而那些人最不會說這樣的話;
But those men, least of all, do not say such things;
7:223
yet the things which ought never to be said, these men do say.
7:224
那些事才真正是魔鬼的角力較量;
Those things are truly the wrestlings of the devil;
7:225
but into these matters it is not even worth entering the contest.
7:226
'But,' says one, 'it is this very love of money that the devil injects.'
7:227
Then flee it, and do not accept it, O man!
7:228
But as it is, if you should see someone from behind a railing preparing filth, and then the one who looks on standing still while it is poured over him and receiving the whole of it upon his head, you not only do not pity him, but are even indignant, and say that he has suffered justly; and everyone cries out to him, 'Do not be a fool!'
7:229
And you do not so much blame the one who throws, as the one who receives.
7:230
然而如今你知道,貪愛錢財乃是出於魔鬼;
But now you know that the love of money is of the devil;
7:231
你知道這是千萬樣惡事的根源;
you know that this is the cause of ten thousand evils;
7:232
你看見他如同調製污泥一般,預備那些卑污可恥的念頭;
you see him preparing, like filth, the vile and shameful reasonings;
7:233
而你竟以赤裸的頭承受那者的污穢,你不明白只要稍微轉身避開,便可擺脫這一切嗎?正如那人只要離開那地方,就能擺脫它一樣;
and receiving with bare head the uncleanness of that one, you do not perceive that you ought, by turning aside a little, to be rid of the whole? Just as that man, by turning aside from the spot, would have been rid of it;
7:234
so also do you not receive such reasonings, and you will flee sin; thrust away the desire.
7:235
'And how shall I thrust it away?' says one.
7:236
假若你是個異教徒,只讚羨眼前之物,或許這事還算十分艱難──然而連那些人尚且成就了這事;
If you were a pagan, and admired the present things alone, perhaps the matter would be one of much difficulty—and yet even those men achieved this;
7:237
而你這指望天堂與天上之事的人,竟說「我怎能把它推開?」若我所說的正相反,那時你才有理由如此問;
but you who are a man expecting heaven and the things in the heavens, do you say, 'How shall I thrust it away?' If I said the contrary, then it would be fitting;
7:238
if I said, 'Desire riches,'—
7:239
then you might say, 'And how shall I desire riches, seeing such things?'
7:240
Tell me, if, when gold and precious stones lay before you, I said, 'Desire lead,'—
7:241
would it not be a perplexity? For you would say, 'How can I?' But if I said, 'Do not desire it,' this would be easier.
7:242
我所稀奇的,不是那些輕看這些之物的人,而是那些不輕看的人;
I do not marvel at those who despise these things, but at those who do not despise them;
7:243
這實在是一個充滿極度怠惰的靈魂所有的表現,與蒼蠅蚊蟲毫無分別,在地上爬行,在污泥中打滾,對任何偉大之事都毫無想像。你在說什麼?你將要承受永生,卻說:「我怎能為那生命而輕看今生?」難道這兩者還有什麼可比較爭議的嗎?你將要領受一件君王的袍子;
this belongs to a soul exceedingly filled with sluggishness, differing in nothing from flies and gnats, crawling on the ground, wallowing in the mire, imagining nothing great. What are you saying? You are about to inherit eternal life, and you say, 'How shall I despise the present life for the sake of that one?' Are the matters really in doubt? You are about to receive a royal robe;
7:244
你卻說:「我怎能輕看這些破布爛衫?」你將要被領進君王的宮殿;
and you say, 'How shall I despise the rags?' You are about to be led into the palace of the King;
7:245
and you say, 'How shall I despise the poor and present dwelling?' Truly it is we who are everywhere to blame, we who are unwilling to rouse ourselves even a little.
7:246
因為凡是甘心願意的人,都成功了;
For those who have been willing have all succeeded;
7:247
and they succeeded with much vehemence and with ease.
7:248
And may it come to pass that you also, being persuaded by our exhortation, may succeed, and become zealous imitators of those who have succeeded, by the grace and loving-kindness of His only-begotten Son, with whom to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, dominion, and honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages.
