Now Joseph, who was surnamed Barnabas by the apostles (which is, being interpreted, son of consolation), a Levite,
12:2
a Cypriot by birth, having a field of his own, sold it and brought the money and laid it at the feet of the apostles.
12:3
路加接下來要敘述亞拿尼亞與撒非喇的事,他既要顯明那人犯了極重的罪,就先提說那行事正直的人;
He is about to relate next the affair concerning Ananias and Sapphira, and wishing to show that the man had sinned most grievously, he first makes mention of the one who acted rightly;
12:4
that although so great a multitude was doing these things, amid so much grace, so many signs, he was not amended by any of these, but once for all, blinded by the love of money, drew down that destruction upon his own head.
12:5
路加這樣說,是要顯明這就是他所擁有的唯一產業;
Thus he spoke, showing that this was the only thing he possessed;
12:6
having sold it, he brought the money and laid it at the feet of the apostles.
12:7
But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession, and kept back part of the price, his wife also being privy to it;
12:8
and bringing a certain portion, he laid it at the feet of the apostles.
12:9
The dreadful thing is that the sin was committed with deliberate agreement, and no one else knew what had happened.
12:10
Whence did it come upon this wretched and miserable man to do this? And Peter said,
12:11
Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit, and to keep back part of the price of the land? See how now too a great sign has come to pass, and far greater than that former one.
12:12
While it remained, did it not remain yours? and after it was sold, was it not in your own power? That is to say: Was there any necessity or compulsion? Did we drag you against your will? Why is it that you have conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men, but to God.
12:13
And Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and gave up the ghost.
12:14
Do you see whence this sign is the greater? From the slaying, from the knowing of the things in the mind, and of the things done in secret.
12:15
And great fear came upon all who heard these things.
12:16
And the younger men arose, wrapped him up, and carrying him out, buried him.
12:17
And there was an interval of about three hours, and his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in.
12:18
And Peter answered her,
12:19
你告訴我,你們賣田地的價銀就是這些麼?他本是願意救她的;
Tell me, whether you sold the land for so much? Her he wished to save;
12:20
for that man had been the ringleader of the sin.
12:21
And on this account he gives her, perhaps, an opportunity for defence, and licence for repentance.
12:22
Tell me, whether you sold the land for so much? And she said, Yes, for so much.
12:23
But Peter said to her,
12:24
How is it that you have agreed together to tempt the Spirit of the Holy One? Behold, the feet of those who have buried your husband are at the door, and they shall carry you out.
12:25
And she fell down immediately at his feet, and gave up the ghost.
12:26
And the young men coming in found her dead, and carrying her out, buried her by her husband.
12:27
And great fear came upon the whole Church, and upon all who heard these things.
12:28
在他們生出這懼怕之後,使徒就行了更多的神蹟;
After their fear had come to pass, they wrought more signs;
12:29
And through the hands of the apostles many signs and wonders were wrought among the people.
12:30
他們都同心合意的在所羅門的廊下;
And they were all with one accord in Solomon's porch;
12:31
and of the rest no one dared to join himself to them, but the people magnified them.
12:32
因為彼得如今實在可畏,他能施行懲罰,甚至責出人心中所思念的事;
For Peter was now indeed formidable, punishing and convicting even the things conceived in the mind;
12:33
to whom they clung the more, both because of the sign, and because of the first public discourse, and the second, and the third.
12:34
因為頭一個神蹟、第二個,以及如今這個,都是他所行的;而在我看來,這末一個甚至是雙重的,並非單單只是一件事;
For he it was who wrought both the first sign and the second and the present one, which to me seems even twofold, and not merely some single thing;
12:35
其一,是責出人心中的意念;
the one, the convicting of the things in the mind;
12:36
the second, the slaying by a mere command.
12:37
And rather were believers the more added to the Lord, he says, multitudes both of men and women, so that they carried out the sick into the streets, and laid them on beds and couches, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might overshadow some of them.
12:38
這樣的事,在基督身上並沒有發生過;
This did not happen in the case of Christ;
12:39
wherefore now too one may see fulfilled in deed the word that went forth from Him.
12:40
What word, then, is this? He who believes in Me, the works that I do he also shall do, and greater than these shall he do.
12:41
And the multitude also of the cities round about came together to Jerusalem,
12:42
bringing sick folk, and those vexed by unclean spirits, who were all healed.
12:43
But do you consider with me how their whole life is woven through by means of contraries.
12:44
例如,起初因基督升天而有憂愁,隨後因聖靈降臨而有歡欣;
For instance, first there was despondency because of the ascension of Christ, then good cheer because of the descent of the Spirit;
12:45
又因那些譏誚的人而有憂愁,隨後因信的人並神蹟而有歡欣;
again despondency because of those who mocked, then good cheer because of the faithful and the sign;
12:46
again despondency because of being seized, then good cheer through the defence.
12:47
Again here too there is both good cheer and despondency.
12:48
因他們得著顯赫的名聲,且神向他們啟示諸事,這是歡欣;
For that they were illustrious, and that God revealed things to them, was good cheer;
12:49
but that they slew their own, was despondency.
12:50
又因他們名聲的光耀而有歡欣;
Again good cheer from the brightness of their fame;
12:51
again despondency from the high priest.
12:52
只要人通篇留心思想,便可看見這情形;
And it is possible, if one considers throughout, to see this;
12:53
and in the case of the ancients too one might find it thus.
12:54
But let us look at what has been said from the beginning.
12:55
They sold, he says, and brought the prices, and laid them at the feet of the apostles.
12:56
Observe with me, beloved, how they did not entrust the selling to the apostles, but themselves sold, and gave the prices to them.
12:57
但亞拿尼亞卻不是這樣,他反倒從所賣田地的價銀中私自扣留了一些;
But not so Ananias; rather he purloined something of the price of the field which he had sold;
12:58
wherefore also he is punished as one who did not deal well with the matter, and was caught stealing what was his own.
12:59
This word touched the priests of our own day too, and very forcibly.
12:60
And since his wife also was privy to what was done, on this account he examines her too.
12:61
But perhaps someone may say that he dealt with her very harshly.
12:62
What do you say? Tell me, what bitterness is this? If a man who gathered sticks was stoned to death, how much more the temple-robber?
12:63
For these possessions too had by then become sacred.
12:64
Therefore he who chose to sell his own goods and distribute them, and then took some back, would be a temple-robber.
12:65
And if he who took from his own things is a temple-robber, how much more he who took from what belonged to others.
12:66
Do not suppose, because this does not now happen and punishment does not follow hard upon the heels of the deed, that such things go unpunished.
12:67
你看見這正是控告他的罪狀嗎?就是他既已把這些財物分別為聖,然後才取回?經上說:難道你不能在變賣之後,把賣得的價銀當作自己的來使用嗎?難道有人攔阻你嗎?你為何在應許之後才取用呢?你看,魔鬼從起初就立刻下手攻擊他們,正是在諸多神蹟奇事之間;
Do you see that this is the charge laid against him—that having made these possessions sacred, he then took some back? For, he says, were you not able, even after selling them, to use the proceeds as your own? Were you hindered? Why, after your promise, do you take? See how the devil straightway from the beginning set upon them, in the very midst of signs and so many wonders;
12:68
or rather, see how this man too was hardened by him.
12:69
類似的事在舊約中也曾發生,就是亞干偷取那當滅之物被查出的時候;
Something of the kind happened also in the Old Testament, when Achar was caught stealing the devoted thing;
12:70
yet even there you learned with how great a vindication the matter was set right.
12:71
For temple-robbery is an exceedingly grievous thing, beloved, and full of great contempt.
12:72
他說:我們既沒有勉強你變賣,也沒有勉強你在賣了之後把價銀交出來;
We did not compel you to sell, he says, nor, having sold, to give the money;
12:73
乃是你出於自己的心意揀選了這樣行;
you chose of your own free will;
12:74
why then did you steal from the sacred moneys? Why, he says, has Satan filled your heart? And if Satan did this, why is he himself charged? He became the cause by receiving Satan's working and being filled by it.
12:75
But it was necessary to correct him, one might say.
12:76
For he who saw such things and yet gained nothing by them would much less have gained by other means.
12:77
It was not right, then, simply to pass over what had been done, but to cut it out like some gangrene, lest it should corrupt the rest of the body.
12:78
因為如今這人自己既得了益處,不至於在惡中更進一步,其餘的人也就更加殷勤了;
For now both this man himself was benefited, in that he did not advance further in wickedness, and the rest became more earnest;
12:79
whereas otherwise the opposite would have come to pass.
12:80
For this reason he first convicts him and shows that what was done had not escaped his notice, and only then condemns.
12:81
他說:你為何行這事呢?你原想留下嗎?你本該從起初就留下,不作那應許;
For why, he says, have you done this? Did you wish to keep it? You ought to have kept it from the beginning, and not to have made the promise;
12:82
but now, having taken it back after dedicating it, you have wrought a greater temple-robbery.
12:83
因為那取用別人之物的人,或許是出於貪戀他人財物而取;
For he who takes what belongs to others perhaps takes it out of coveting another's goods;
12:84
why then did you make these things sacred, and only then take them? This you did out of great contempt.
12:85
What was done admits of no pardon; it is beyond all defense.
12:86
Let no one be scandalized if even now there are temple-robbers.
12:87
For if they existed then, how much more now, when evils are many.
12:88
But let us convict them before all, that the rest also may have fear.
12:89
But this did not scandalize the disciples.
12:90
Do you see how many evils the desire for money works? And there came, it says, great fear upon all who heard these things.
12:91
That man was punished, and others gained.
12:92
可見這事並非漫無安排地任其發生;
So that this was not dispensed without purpose;
12:93
and although other signs had happened before, yet there was no such fear.
12:94
So true is that saying: The Lord is known by executing judgment.
12:95
在約櫃的事上也是如此發生的;
So it happened also in the case of the ark;
12:96
Uzzah was punished, and fear came upon the others.
12:97
但在那裡,那王因懼怕就把約櫃推開了;
But there the king, being afraid, thrust the ark away;
12:98
here, on the contrary, these men become the more attentive.
12:99
Have you seen how Peter did not summon her, but waited for her to come in;
12:100
nor did any of the others dare to disclose what had happened.
12:101
This is fear of the teacher, this is honor of the disciples, this is obedience.
12:102
那婦人並不知道此事,在場的人也沒有一個告訴她,雖然那消息本有足夠的時間傳開;
And the woman did not learn of it, nor did any of those present tell her, though there was ample time for the news to have gotten out;
12:103
and this indeed the sacred writer notes with wonder, saying that Not knowing what had happened, she came in.
12:104
And yet from this it was possible to learn that he knows the things that are hidden.
12:105
因為他既不問別人,為何單問你們呢?豈不是明明以知情者的身分發問嗎?但她心中極深的剛硬使她不肯卸下那罪責,反倒以極大的傲慢回答;
For why, without asking anyone else, does he ask you? Or is it not plain that he asks as one who knows? But her great hardening did not allow her to strip off the accusation, but she answers with much insolence;
12:106
for she thought she was conversing with a mere man.
12:107
This is the dreadful thing: that they came to the sin as if from a single counsel, or as if by some compact.
12:108
Why is it that you agreed together, he says, to tempt the Holy Spirit? Behold, the feet of those who buried your husband are at the door, and they will carry you out.
12:109
他先使她認識自己的罪,然後才指明她理當遭受與她丈夫相同的結局;
First he teaches her the sin, and only then shows that she will justly suffer the same as her husband;
12:110
since she also committed the same sins.
12:111
And how, one asks, did she Immediately fall down at his feet and expire? Because she was standing near.
12:112
Thus they drew down the punishment upon themselves by their own act.
12:113
Who then would not have been astounded? Who would not have feared the apostle? Who would not have marveled? And they were all, it says, with one accord in Solomon's porch.
12:114
從此可見他們並非住在房屋裡,乃是佔據了聖殿,在那裡度日;
From this it is plain that they did not abide in a house, but having taken up their place in the temple, they spent their time there;
12:115
nor indeed did they any longer guard themselves against touching unclean things, but they touched the dead without hesitation.
12:116
And see how, in their own affairs, they are vehement, but in those of others they do not use their power.
12:117
經上說:反倒有更多信而歸主的人加增,連男帶女都是許多;
Rather, it says, believers were the more added to the Lord, multitudes both of men and women;
12:118
so that they carried out the sick into the streets and laid them on beds and pallets, that as Peter came by at least his shadow might overshadow some of them.
12:119
Great was the faith of those who came, and greater than in the days of Christ.
12:120
Whence then did this come to pass? From Christ having declared and said:
12:121
He who believes in me, the works that I do he shall do also, and greater works shall he do.
12:122
因為他們既留在那裡而不四處走動,眾人便把自己所有的病人放在床上、褥子上抬來,從各方面,這奇妙之事都為他們匯集起來——從那些已經信的人,從那些得醫治的人,從那受刑罰的人,從他們對那些人所存的膽量,從那些並非只是膚淺相信之人的美德;
For while they remained there and did not go about, all men brought upon beds and pallets the sick that they had, and from every side the wonder was gathered together for them—from those who had believed, from those who were healed, from him who was punished, from their boldness toward those men, from the virtue of those who had not believed merely in a superficial way;
12:123
for what came to pass was not a matter of signs only.
12:124
For even if they themselves, out of modesty, ascribe the whole to this, saying that they do these things in the name of Christ, yet the life and virtue of these men also brought this about.
12:125
但你要留意,他在此並不說出信者的數目,乃是留給聽者自己去推想;
But observe how here he does not state the number of those who believed, leaving the hearer to reckon it for himself;
12:126
so did he extend the matter of faith to an infinite multitude.
12:127
Hence too the resurrection was the more proclaimed.
12:128
And no one dared to join himself to them, but the people magnified them.
12:129
他這樣說,是要指明他們不再像先前那樣被人藐視了;
This he says, showing that they were no longer contemptible as before;
12:130
and that in a short time, and in a single moment, so much was accomplished by the fisherman and the unlettered man.
12:131
如此,這地從此便成了天,無論就其生活方式、坦然無懼、諸般奇事,或就一切而言,都是如此;
The earth, then, was henceforth heaven, for its manner of life, its boldness, its wonders, and for all things;
12:132
And like angels they were marveled at, turning aside to nothing—neither to laughter, nor to threats, nor to dangers.
12:133
And not only for this reason, but because, being exceedingly kind and full of tender care, they succored some with money and others with the tending of their bodies.
12:134
'Why has Satan filled your heart?' Peter, though about to punish him, all but makes his defense for him, and thereby instructs the rest.
12:135
For since what had happened was likely to appear exceedingly harsh, on this very account he makes the tribunal fearful both in his case and in that of the woman.
12:136
of the woman, he makes the tribunal fearful.
12:137
But if He had not exacted such a penalty from both of them for a sin so unpardonable, how great a contempt of God would have arisen thereby? And that it was for this reason is plain from His not coming immediately to punishment, but first exposing the sin.
12:138
Wherefore no one groaned, no one lamented aloud, but all were seized with fear.
12:139
And fittingly, as their faith was strengthened, the signs too became more numerous, and great was the fear even among their own household; for the things of outsiders do not so disturb us as do the things of our own.
12:140
所以,我們若彼此緊密聯結,就無人能與我們爭戰;
If, then, we are firmly knit together with one another, no one will be able to war against us;
12:141
just as, if we stand apart from one another, on the contrary all will set upon us.
12:142
從此,其餘的人也就放膽,甚至坦然無懼地進入市場,在仇敵中間得勝;
From this the others too henceforth took courage, and with boldness they even entered into the marketplace, and in the midst of their enemies they prevailed;
12:143
and that saying was fulfilled: 'Have dominion in the midst of thine enemies.'
12:144
which was also a proof of greater power, that though held fast and bound, they did such things.
12:145
If, then, those who merely lied suffered such things, what will they not suffer who also swear falsely? Or rather, if the woman, for simply saying 'Yea, for so much,' paid such a penalty and did not escape,
12:146
consider, you who swear and forswear yourselves, of what punishment you would be worthy. And it is fitting today to show also from the Old Testament the grievousness of perjury.
12:147
'A sickle,' he says, 'was flying, ten cubits in breadth.'
12:148
那飛行,表明伴隨起誓而來的刑罰其臨到何等迅速;
The flying signifies the swiftest onset of the punishment that attends upon oaths;
12:149
那寬與長各有十肘,表明那災禍的猛烈與巨大;
and its being ten cubits, this breadth and length, signifies the vehemence and the magnitude of the evils;
12:150
那從天上飛來,表明這判決是從上面的審判台發出的;
and its flying from heaven, that the verdict is borne from the tribunal above;
12:151
and its being sickle-shaped, the inescapableness of the punishment.
12:152
因為正如鐮刀落在頸項上,不能自行抽回,反倒在頭被砍斷之際仍以某種方式停留在那裏;
For just as a sickle, falling upon the neck, cannot of itself be drawn back, but somehow remains fixed even while the head is being severed;
12:153
so also the sentence coming upon those who swear is something fearful, and would not depart until it had first wrought its work.
12:154
但我們起誓時若得逃脫,卻不可就此放心;
But if we escape when we swear, let us not take courage;
12:155
for this happens to our own hurt. Since what do you suppose? How many after Ananias and Sapphira dared the very same things as they, and did not suffer the same? And how, one says, did they not suffer? Not because it was pardoned them, but because they are being kept for a greater evil.
12:156
所以,那犯許多罪卻不受刑罰的人,比那受刑罰的人更應當懼怕、更應當戰兢;
So that those who fall into many sins, when they are not punished, ought rather to fear and dread than those who are punished;
12:157
for through impunity and through the long-suffering of God, their measure of punishment increases.
12:158
所以,我們不要看我們是否未受刑罰,乃要看我們是否未曾犯罪;
Let us not, then, look at this, that we are not punished, but at whether we have not sinned;
12:159
and if, sinning, we are not punished, we ought all the more to tremble.
12:160
Tell me: if you have a servant, and you only threaten him and do not strike, when does he fear more, when does he flee, when does he run away? Is it not when you only threaten? Wherefore we exhort one another also not to threaten continually, lest by fear we shake the soul too greatly, and rend it more than blows would.
12:161
And besides, there the punishment is but for a time, whereas here it is unceasing.
12:162
所以,不要因為如今無人遭受那鐮刀所表徵的事,就只看眼前這事,倒要思想另一件事,就是他是否行了這樣的事;
Do not, then, because no one now suffers the things of the sickle, look at this present fact, but consider that other thing, whether he does such deeds;
12:163
因為如今有許多事發生,正如洪水時代所發生的一樣,然而洪水並未臨到;
since many things happen now such as befell at the flood, yet a flood has not come;
12:164
for a hell has been threatened, and punishment.
12:165
許多人犯了如所多瑪所行的那樣的罪,然而火雨並未降下;
Many sin such things as were done in Sodom, yet no rain of fire has come;
12:166
for a river of fire has been prepared.
12:167
許多人膽敢行法老所行的事;
Many have dared the deeds of Pharaoh;
12:168
但他們未曾遭受法老所受的事,也未曾沉沒於紅海;
but they have not suffered the things of Pharaoh, nor have they been drowned in the Red Sea;
12:169
for there awaits them the sea of the abyss, where the punishment is not attended with insensibility, nor is it possible to be drowned, but they are consumed, punished all the more, fried as in a pan, strangled.
12:170
許多人膽敢行以色列人所行的事;
Many have dared the deeds of the Israelites;
12:171
但蛇並未吞吃他們;
but serpents have not devoured them;
12:172
for the worm that never dies awaits them.
12:173
許多人膽敢行基哈西所行的事;
Many have dared the deeds of Gehazi;
12:174
for there awaits them, instead of the leprosy, to be cut asunder and to be appointed a portion with the hypocrites.
12:175
許多人既起了誓,又背了誓;
Many have both sworn and forsworn themselves;
12:176
但他們縱然逃脫了,我們卻不可就此放心;
but even if they have escaped, let us not take courage;
12:177
for the gnashing of teeth awaits them.
12:178
And here too perhaps they will suffer, and will not escape, even if not
12:179
立時臨到,卻要藉著別的罪臨到,使那刑罰更加沉重;
at their heels, yet upon other sins, so that the punishment may be even more grievous;
12:180
since we ourselves also, often taking occasion from small matters, pour out our whole vengeance for the sake of great ones.
12:181
So that when you see something befalling you, call to mind that sin of yours.
12:182
For this happened in the case of the sons of Jacob.
12:183
Remember the brothers of Joseph:
12:184
他們賣了自己的兄弟,起意要殺他,或者說,就他們而言,實在已經殺了他;
they sold their brother, they attempted to slay him—or rather, they even slew him, so far as lay in them;
12:185
they deceived and grieved the old man.
12:186
Yet after many years they came into danger concerning their lives, and were reminded of this sin.
12:187
And that what is said is no mere conjecture, hear what they themselves say:
12:188
'For we are guilty concerning our brother.'
12:189
所以你也當這樣,當有事臨到你的時候,就說:『是的,我們是在罪中,因為我們沒有聽從基督,因為我們起了誓;
So do you also, when something befalls you, say: 'Yea, we are in sin, because we did not hearken to Christ, because we swore;
12:190
the many oaths and the perjuries have come upon my head.'
12:191
for they too made confession, and were saved.
12:192
For what if the punishment does not come at once? since Ahab too, on account of Naboth, did not suffer immediately after the sin the things which he suffered.
12:193
這是為甚麼呢?神給你一段寬限的時日,好叫你把自己洗淨;
And why does this happen? God gives you a term, that you may wash yourself clean;
12:194
but when you persist, He thereafter brings on the punishment.
12:195
你們已經看見那些說謊的人所遭受的了。那麼,就當思想那些起假誓的人也要遭受甚麼;
You have seen what those who lied suffered. Consider, then, what those also who swear falsely will suffer;
12:196
因為凡起誓的人,無論是甘心還是不甘心,斷不能不背誓;
for it is not possible for one who swears not to forswear himself, whether willingly or unwillingly;
12:197
it is not possible for one who forswears himself to be saved.
12:198
One perjury suffices to work the whole ruin, and to bring upon us the punishment entire.
12:199
For this cause, I beseech you, let us give heed to ourselves, that escaping the chastisement from here, we may be counted worthy of the loving-kindness which is from God, by the grace and mercies of His only-begotten Son, with whom, to the Father, together with the Holy Spirit, be glory, might, honor, now and ever, and unto the ages of ages. Amen.
